Ferality Dynamics

My take on "going feral", which for me is more of a plot device. Nevertheless, here is more of my worldbuilding for the omegaverse. TW: Mentioned/implied sexual violence, bitching, mention of child death,

Alpha

Going feral is actually specific to alphas (omegas have a similar condition but it is technically a separate condition). Ferality is a condition that is rare among modern day alphas. Going feral is difficult to reverse, and is not always “curable”. A feral alpha has no control over their scent, pheromones, instincts, or behavior. Feral alphas can be characterized as animalistic, aggressive, and acting erratically (without a clear goal or motive). Feral alphas exist within a state of insatiable rut, and this leads to hormonal aggression. In a feral alpha, they cannot tell the difference between betas and omegas. All individuals that are not alphas, are omegas in their eyes. The key difference between an alpha in rut and a feral alpha is that a rutting alpha has a strong urge to scent, breed, and protect their mate. An alpha in rut is possessive of their mate, but while they may not be in their right mind, they generally don’t mean to harm their mate. A feral alpha will not have that distinction. A feral alpha only has the drive to dominate, and more often than not, that involves trying to breed anything that moves and causing significant harm to themselves and generally severely injuring, maiming, or even killing their victim. Alphas to a feral alpha are “competition”, and feral alphas will try to kill them or incapacitate them. Ferality can be caused by a significantly distressing psychological event. This could include the death of a bonded mate, pack isolation (being removed from a pack for extended periods of time), and being isolated and alone for extended periods. For this reason, alphas should not be alone on jobs such as research trips or military deployment and should have a companion to quite literally keep them sane.

Omegas

The equivalent of going feral for an omega is dropping. Omega Drop, like alpha ferality, is characterized as a psychological condition that places an individual in a state of psychosis. A dropped omega has no control over their scent, pheromones, instincts, or behavior, and often possess a difficulty distinguishing reality from fantasy. Omegas may have delusions, increased paranoia or anxiety, and especially fear alphas. Omega drop can occur from the death of a bonded mate, pack isolation (especially considering omegas by nature cluster and cling together to other omegas or betas), and the death of a pup, especially one lost to stillbirth or shortly after birth. Omegas in drop are known to neglect their own needs in favor of trying to nurture their surroundings. It is sometimes missed in omegas with surviving pups as they’ll give all of their attention and sacrifice their needs to care for their (usually very young) offspring. Dropped omegas, however, are also known for trying to nurture inanimate objects, ranging from things that may resemble a pup, such as a doll or plush toy, to more obscure objects, like rocks, phones, or even shoes. It is important to note that phones, tablets, or screened objects may attract the attention of a delusional omega as they often produce heat, sound, and stimulate senses. A key note is that bitching can also cause omega drop as it is a psychologically distressing event. In most cases, bitching is not a consensual act, and the distress caused by force conversion between alpha to omega can cause omega drop.

Treatment

Treatment is not always an option for ferality, and many times, it is permanent. In the case of permanent ferality, the individual would be allowed to live out their life in a care facility with specific training to handle those needs. Treatment for less severe cases can be a concentration of synthetic hormones from the opposite secondary gender, so for omegas that’s alpha hormones and vice versa. The purpose is to offset the imbalance hormones. To begin, generally hormones are injected (or infused, for more severe cases that require a larger dose), and then the individual is kept on hormone therapy, and this can be in the form of transdermal patches, topical gels or creams, or potentially an implantable device that can dose at a set rate.
