A particularly annoyingly evangelizing vegan colleague of mine got me wondering what exactly the end plan for these people is.
Presumably they want everyone on the planet to go vegan.
Okay, did the math and growing the world's densest (most calories per acre) crop, potatoes, on every acre of the world's arable land you could more than achieve the majority of the nutrition side of things.
You'd still have to deal with the B12 issue (the required human nutrient that potatoes lack), which depending on your level of veganism could be a problem since there are only three sources of B12: meat, dairy, and pills and the contents of the pills is bacterial cultures so that might be a no go, I don't know. Maybe that's fine.
We'll ignore for the moment the distribution issues of getting those spuds to people in non-arable areas.
So say you've completely solved the nutrition problem of being vegan.
How do you plan to open up the arable land currently used for animal production (roughly 75% of currently arable land is currently used for grazing) and what do you plan to do with the existing animals? Being vegan, you can't kill them or harm them in any way, so you can't sterilize them either. So they're just going to keep breeding with no culling other than natural deaths.
In the US alone, we have an estimated 308 million commercial laying hens. Each producing roughly an egg a day. At the moment, with the majority of those eggs going to stores to be consumed as eggs, the US has a fertilization rate of 13%. Even if that didn't climb after egg eating was stopped, that means 40 million fertilized eggs a day. If even 5% of those hatch, that's 2 million chicks after the first 20-21 days of this.
If we aren't eating or killing them, that's a problem.
And since the larger the predator, the longer the gestation time and smaller the number of offspring in a breeding period is a general reality, we are hosed on chickens alone if everyone just stops eating them because there won't be enough predators in the food chain without humans to stem the the chicken tide.
And that's just one livestock animal. It'll be a problem with the others as well.
And all this is ignoring all the other non-food products we get from animals. What are we replacing those with? And don't say plastic (or vegan leather or it's equivalents, cuz those are just plastics), I'd say relying even more heavily on fossil fuels isn't a good strategy here.
So, really, what's the end game here?

Also my biggest takeaway from bingeing Malevolent and Dungeon Meshi pretty close together is that Arthur really needs a Senshi around to convince him to actually eat and sleep occasionally. Something something the party beat their mad magician because they were well fed and rested while Arthur and John got tied to a table by their magic user. Didn't even think to make a giant curry to distract the hag.

My Mum, When She Is Buying Ingredients For Her Own Cooking: Everything must be as fresh as possible. All the prep will be done in the kitchen, it improves the quality of the meal. Get the WHOLE neep, we can make several things out of that. I need to compare these boxes of chicken to figure out which has the least water and therefore most meat - don't get the pre-cut chicken, it's never cut right and usually has more water. We will get the whole herbs and I will chop them myself.
My Mum, When She Is Talking To Her Daughter With Known Dysfunctional Executives And A History Of Forgetting To Eat: Buy the meat pre-diced. Here are good jars and packets of sauces. Buy the pre-prepped vegetables. Always have tinned things to hand for emergencies. Frozen stuff is still good for you! Order takeaway, it exists for a reason!

i feel replete with nutrients
#nutrition people are right about Bone Broth in the sense that. it is good for you to have delicious collagens and lipids and salts liquid#but forcing yourself to drink it seems like overkill if you're not into that#you should eat it in a soup. that has both matzo balls and egg noodles and also some carrots and alliums and such#then you are happy due to the soup. and have matzo and noodle and egg nutrients as well#important dietary advice from a professional tissue biologist :)#box opener

It's 1:27 on Christmas morning, I am about to sleep, and I can smell the lamb cooking in the kitchen and DAMN TOMORROW'S DINNER IS GONNA BE GOOD

sometimes i get caught in little brain loops about the mechanics of how vampires eat. i get lost in the sauce about how much blood they'd need, what the exact mechanism for that might be
then i have to be like 'no u gotta be more loosey goosey about this' bc in reality, blood is so nutritionally incomplete that vampire bats, the only mammal obligate blood-eaters, consume so much blood just to get enough nutrients to live that they sometimes can't take flight after a meal, and have to piss pretty much constantly in order to get rid of excess water weight to be able to fly
which isn't very sexy
#and it IS very important that the vampires are sexy#so they can't have 'normal' digestive tracts#that would be hilarious though#more power to people who want to write vampires who need to consume so much blood they have to just lay around all bloated#pissing themselves to deflate enough to move#it's also really hard for vampire bats to rear their young#like if you think about it#the blood has to provide not just nutrition for the mother but also be converted into milk to nourish the batlings#but blood is absolutely SHIT to use for this#so the babies take FOREVER to grow#anyway thanks for coming to my TED Talk#eira speaks

Food = Lunch
No Lunch = No Glucose, therefore no feeding Brain, which means NO THINKING!

also a lot of pop nutrition/diet culture freakouts are abt things that have been established to be harmful for patients with a particular disease and then some people did not use their precious reading comprehension skills and decided it applies to everyone. and shared that thought in a womens magazine or a breakfast show or their instagram or whatever.
