I randomly found a 500 page French book on OpenLibrary about the etymology of animal names so here are 10 (ish) fun facts:

the French word for poodle, “caniche” looks like it definitely comes from Latin “canis” (dog) but no! It comes from cane / canard (duck) because it was a waterfowl-hunting dog—and its name in English, Swedish, German, Dutch (poodle, pudel, puedel) also reflects this dog’s affinity with water (from pudeln = to splash about). It’s like otters, whose name come from the same root as water...

the canary on the other hand is named after canis / dog, since it comes from the Canary Islands which, according to Pliny the Elder, were named after the huge dogs that lived there at some point. Some historians think these mysterious big dogs were actually seals or big lizards. Then a bird ended up with the name ‘from the dog place’ though it’s unclear if dogs were ever truly involved. (Meanwhile Spain / Hispania comes from the Phoenician i-shepan-im, the place with rabbits.) I like the idea of ancient humans seeing seals or lizards and going “weird dogs”. Like how ancient Greeks saw hyenas and named them “pigs, I guess?”

the fox has a great diversity of names in Europe: fox / Fuchs, zorro, räv, volpe, raposa, lisu, róka, renard... In French it used to be called ‘goupil’, from the same Latin root as the Italian ‘volpe’, but then the mediaeval cycle of poems known as Le Roman de Renart, about an unprincipled fox named Renart, became so popular that renard became the word for fox and goupil disappeared. It’s like if 500 years from now bears in English were called baloos. (The English and German words for fox come from the indo-european root puk- which means tail, like Hungarian ‘farkas’ (wolf) which means tail-having, or squirrel, from the Greek words for shade + tail, there are actually lots of animals that are just “that one with a tail”...)

French has a word for baby rabbit (lapereau) derived from Latin leporellus (little hare) and we used to have a word for adult rabbit (conin) from Latin cuniculus (rabbit)—related to the German Kaninchen, Italian coniglio, Spanish conejo, etc. But ‘conin’ in Old French also meant pussy (there were mediaeval puns about this in the Roman de Renart) and at some point I guess people were like okay, it was funny at first but we’ve run this joke into the ground, and a new and politically correct word appeared for adult rabbit (lapin) based on the pre-existing word for baby rabbit (lapereau).

The english bear is thought to come from the proto-IE root bher-, for brown—I love how Finnish has so many nicknames and euphemisms for “bear” ranging from “honey palm” to “apple of the forest” and English is like... dude’s brown. Same amount of effort with the Swedish and Danish words for fox, räv / ræv, from a root that means reddish-brown. (And the Hungarian word for lion, oroszlán, along with the Turkish ‘aslan’, comes from proto-Turkic arislan / arsilan which comes from arsil which means brown...) And since brown was already taken, ‘beaver’ (+ German, Dutch, Swedish...: Biber, bever, bäver) has been speculated to come from bhe-bhrus-, a doubling of the original root so... brownbrown.

English foal / German Fohlen / French poulain / Italian puledro all come from the proto-IE root pu- which means small (e.g. Latin puer and Greek pais = child)—then the French ‘poulain’ became ‘poulenet’ with the diminutive -et (so, a smallsmall animal) and poulenet became powny in Scots then pony in English, which was then re-imported by French as ‘poney’. Also the Spanish word for donkey, burro, comes from Latin burricus = small horse, and in French Eeyore is named Bourriquet with the -et diminutive ending, so we just keep taking small horses and turning them into smallsmall horses...

The boa (bo(v)a) shares the same etymology as bovine / bœuf / beef, due to a widespread belief that some snakes suckled milk from cows. Pliny the Elder stated this as fact and (not to bully him but) modern research tells us “there is no empirical basis for saying snakes like mammal milk; experiments, indeed, have shown that captive snakes systematically refuse to drink milk”

I was disappointed to learn that antelope comes from Greek anthólops which referred to a mythical creature, because I grew up convinced the origin of the word (antilope in French) was anti-lupus, as in, the gazelle is the generic prey so as a concept it’s the opposite of the wolf, the generic predator. Wolf and anti-wolf. Though it raised the question of why we don’t have antilions (zebra), anticats (mice) and antibears (salmons)

Many European languages have named kites after some sort of flying animal: in English it comes from the word for owl, in Portuguese from the word for parrot, in Italian from eagle, and in French it’s cerf-volant aka flying-deer. There’s an interesting hypothesis for this! Kites came to Europe from China, where they were often shaped like dragons or snakes, and snake is serpent in French and serpe in Old French, so it’s possible that kites were serpe-volants aka flying-snakes. But the ‘p’ and ‘v’ next to one another were a hassle to pronounce so the p got dropped and it became ser-volant, then ‘ser’ which isn’t a word started being mistaken for ‘cerf’ which is pronounced ‘ser’ but means deer... (We did it again with chauve-souris (bald-mouse = bat), which comes from the Gaulish cawa-sorix aka owl-mouse—which makes more sense as a name for bats! similar to the German Fledermaus, flying-mouse, and Spanish murciélago, blind-mouse. But Gaulish ‘cawa’ was mixed up with Latin ‘calva’ = chauve = bald, so now a French bat is a bald-mouse)

I love etymology, it’s all flying deer and dogs named splash and snakes named cow and ponies named smallsmall and five animals named brown and three named tail—words acquire a veneer of linguistic respectability over the centuries and we forget that fundamentally everyone just says whatever

so after vagueing that i had a bad day i also want to make a 'dear diary' post saying that i had a GOOD day yesterday because:

- had lunch with my old flatmate that i lived with in aarhus and his sister and mum and it feels nice to have some familiar people in a 'new' place

- the man behind the counter was the most attractive man i have ever seen holy shit. will return to this place just for him.

- after talking with my former flatmate about dating i decided to give tinder another try and i matched with a danish professor again who i had matched with before deleting my tinder and we are going on a date soon :) (i am still not sure if he is my type but i am interested enough to at least give it a try)

- also matched with someone (52yo hot daddy kind of man with the best moustache i have ever seen) who was using tinder in a gr*ndr way but sexually speaking he is exactly my type and we are hopefully meeting up soon 👀

- decided to be brave and went to the friday bar despite storm otto and found some people i hung out with last time and it was GREAT. finally felt like my jokes landed a bit and it just felt comfortable

- one of the girls there is bffs with one of my nordic languages in the middle ages classmates and she said: "yeah so we both think you are really hot." and i joked "oh, that must probably be because im the foreign mysterious stranger" and they said "no, we thought you were attractive on looks alone" and now i have to come to terms with people finding me hot. new experience. error.

- this girl also hugged me at the end and said we are officially friends and that she is looking forward to seeing me again <3

- there was also this guy from the faroe islands there who is lowkey my type (i dont really vibe with guys my age that often) and we talked all evening and the girl said that i am exactly his type. he is in an open relationship so perhaps Something could happen there. 👀 (but also down with just having him as a friend)

so yeah after having a bad week (nearly got financially fucked by paper work and bad communcation & my dutch friend group turns out to be so ignorant that they are lowkey transphobic) i needed a friday. <3

you said you wanted to hear about our pitty ocs so uhh im gonna ramble about mine! their full name is jesse theodore gerard, their name in-game is 'ruthless' jesse gerald (headcanon that boochbeard misheard their last name both as they said it and as the maestro said it) and their prefered name is dirk (derived from their middle name). they have a bajillion names because i didn't know what to name them so i browsed behind the name for dutch names that i thought would fit their vibe.

anyway yea while dirk is a hero of the spiral for stopping the armada, they are not above violence and whatnot by a LONG SHOT. they're a 'stab first, ask questions if the stabbing victim happens to survive' kinda fella, and growing up in skull island after seeing their childhood home of karamelle fall to capitalist corruption has given them a... somewhat skewed morality when it comes to justice and money. in the story im writing with them, they swear to hunt down the Wizard bc the Wizard may or may not have nearly destroyed the Spiral after the events of Arc 3 (with the whole 'Nothing' prophecy). Justice and bloodshed go hand in hand for them. they've got a good heart but heaps of bad experiences and not-so-good environments will do that to a kid.

also dirk is like 20 and not a child because the backstory i made for them just does not work if they're a child. and their story/the events of the game happen after arc 3. despite p101 saying that the pirate is a child and that p101 mooshu and w101 mooshu overlap. canon is 'more guidelines than rules,' as that one PoTC character once said.

I DONT KNOW HOW MUCH OF THIS WILL FIT IN ONE ASK BUT IM GONNA TRY! So Darcy doesn’t really have any issues with Molly because Molly showing up and even the wandering eyes towards the end of Molly’s relationship with Dutch makes him, in Darcy’s mind, truly unattainable which makes him “safe”, as I’ve talked about before. During that time, I imagine Darcy and Arthur become closer buddybuddyand Darcy in general puts her mind to working and integrating herself more in the community. HOWEVER! There’s one of Dutch and Molly’s fights before the island stuff and before she disappears where Arthur is present and Molly mentions Dutch hasn’t touched her in weeks and you bet your ass Darcy just 👀. Some kinda switch gets flipped and Darcy just becomes a feral nasty thing and she’s like “I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna actually fuck Dutch.” And actively pursues him again, restarting weird tension between Darcy and Arthur in the middle of everything else going on at that point

me reading up on dutch-canadian relations:

fr though, back when i studied in america me and two german friends of mine decided to go to toronto for a weekend, and i was taken away by how much it felt like home! granted, id already been in the states for months but man, from the bicycles to the shops selling speculoos flavors, i felt an immediate connection.

one day me and my friends decided to go to this island but when we arrived it was pouring and there wasnt actually anything to do there cause everything was closed so we were just strolling around kind of lost when this woman walked up to us and actually offered for us, three total strangers, to have some tea over at her house.

she had all these dutch ornament kind of tiles and kept talking about how much her husband liked the netherlands and it was just the absolute cutest thing ever. unfortunately we only had time to be in toronto for 4 days and as a dutch person im probably totally biased in this anyway lmfao but it totally reaffirmed my love and respect for canada & its citizens! 

apart from that short experience in toronto i also walked the four day marches in nijmegen last year and this canadian soldier actually gave me this pin which i also thought was just cute as hell lol

there are like two dreams i remember pretty vividly: one, i had stigmata. (fun fact: i’m a jew) i woke up and i could feel the pain in my palms and feet. i was like. maybe in fifth or sixth grade. everything happens when i’m 13 or 14 because i have exactly zero memory and Bad Brain Disorder Origin Years just makes everything a sad mockery of mashed potatoes

the second dream i remember vividly was essentially that i discovered a door to Wonderland (and listen here u lil shits: i’m not a big Wonderland person, not even a Mad Hatter kinda gal despite whatever my past has said about me, and also my Jervis Tetch is super valid and prob one of the best out there you’re welcome) in this honestly gorgeous old mansion. the kind that’s just. tons of dark wood, narrow halls, winding and yet there’s a lot of natural light, like gorgeous. and i found a door to Wonderland and holy fucking shit

what i would give to actually find a door to that Wonderland, bye y’all peace it’s been a gas but i gotta run

so after i left i wanted to go back, and i had a rough time finding the portal and ok long story short it turned out i had to go deal with a unicorn cult (it was more intense than that but hey, cults amirite) in order to get the reagents to go back to Wonderland and i suddenly found myself falling in a huge cave and the spirit healer from WoW was there so that says a lot about where i was in my life at the time

(also sidenote, Salutations (my farmer in sdv, also top notch) is his uncle and when i wrote up his first char sheet i fucked up his last name bc his last name can’t be Morgans, but i’ll give him another one Soon(tm) (no i won’t))

Lane is a retired rollercoaster engineer who is now writing romance novels. he’s doing absolutely amazingly and his twitter a mess in a good way. he wishes he was Chuck Tingle’s bff. his novels aren’t modeled after Tingle’s (hehe), he writes very well rounded, interesting, and diverse romance that doesn’t take itself seriously. because i do what i want, he’s pretty well known and on several bestsellers.

he’s like in his 40s by now i think and he’s a late transitioner. he’s a divorcee (he and his ex wife are really good friends it’s all good) and he had his son Ellis awhile back (who is just a whole dutch cookie tin of crayons and then some). at a singles mixer he met a gardener who would be his future husband and everything is amazing now

i still think about it honestly i was really into keeping up to date with junk food news and food product for a while there but the popular sites were starting to piss me off with their rating systems and reviews like holy entitlement and superiority complex, batman! so i dropped out of it, like the only one that is still super valid is onsecondscoop.com tho it’s been a real hot minute since

i have a lot of my parents’ vinyls and that includes The Beatles white album with some water damage bc i guess my dad knocked something over at some point but also the good stuff like Fleetwood Mac, Linda Ronstadt, America, Seals and Crofts, a lot of musicals, James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot, Cat Stevens (now Yusuf), Earth, Wind, and Fire, Marvin Gaye and more!!! (and i left a whole shitload in chicago too) and it’s very telling about my musical tastes. 

i had ordered Arctic Monkeys’s AM album and it skipped on No. 1 Party Anthem and some other song and so i was like :\ and ordered another and you’ll never guess,

for those who don’t know i’m also a huge Enya fan (LOTR was good to me) and Dark Sky Island was sick af btw, and also Donna Lewis’s entire Now In A Minute album is pretty fuckin close to my soul

however probably my favorite song, most sacred to me, hard to explain it but just the. whew the memories attached is I Love You Always Forever

furthermore a song that still really creeps me out (that also has an origin story attached to it) is 98 Degrees a cappella cover of She’s Out Of My Life (yep! still no thanks)

Fern: What flavor do you have for your wedding cake?

Xigbar- The madlad and I had wedding cupcakes because that was just easier than anything else. Also 100% not because we hardly planned anything and had to buy them after the fact. But he had dutch chocolate and I had red velvet.

Luxord- Do they have wedding cakes on that world? I’m going to assume he brought one because neither of us trusts anything cooked there… It was also red velvet.

Edmond- He was all about summoning a cake but Bastian had one prepared. I can’t even place the flavor, he wouldn’t tell us. But I can say that it was fantastic.

Orchid: Where do you and your F/O plan to go for your honeymoon?

Xigbar- There’s a world that seems like it’s a post-apocalypse, but it’s oddly peaceful. It might be ruined, but there’s something about it that’s calm and gentle… Something there that feels right. He seems really content to be in that world. That’s where we’re going.

Luxord- Does it count if we’re already there? The ship is really all we need, another adventure. With a new stage of our relationship.

Edmond- Normally, I’d refuse to leave the farm, but he told his apprentices to take care of it while we leave, so he has planned a nice little getaway for us. It’s another island, that has a mystical cave full of giant crystals.

Peony: Who proposed? How did the proposal go?

Xigbar- He did. He just sort of blurted it out while holding me against him in bed. Just “Let’s get married.” It… Startled me, but I said yes.

Luxord- I did, and he completely failed to notice for a second. We were jokingly making bets on a game, if he lost he’d have to marry me. It flew right over his head until Xion pointed out to him what I just said. He lost the game “on accident”.

Edmond- I did, with the blue feather as tradition. It went really well! He was very cute when he got flustered over his words.

Yesterday I came back from my first ever holiday on my own. Today I spent the whole day relaxing and only doing laundry as I traveled almost all day yesterday. I had a lovely time, it was great to be able to decide what I wanted to do on my own and then doing it or deciding to do something totally different. I really enjoyed it, it felt really freeing. It also was a bit lonely sometimes, especially when I would be the only one on my own. Like when I ate breakfast at my hotel and was surrounded by couples, friends and family. Or when I went out for lunch or dinner on my own. Also the fact that you can't share it and talk about it with other people. I spammed my family with pictures just to feel like that for a bit. But the positive things did really outshine the negative ones. Who knows, I might do this again and travel farther or longer. But this was a great start!

Rudolph for his red nose, Hermey ‘cause he wants to be a dentist (which isn’t accepted in the Christmas society), and the giant snowmonster because there scared of him.

EmoChristmasMusic: They all get mocked and hurt by their peers and discriminated against. They set put on their own where they go to an island where a bunch of other misfits (Island Of Misfit Toys) are left alone and hoping to be accepted by people who were supposed to want them (The Kids).

EmoChristmasMusic: Then there’s Clarice is a "perfect" child who is banned and stopped from being friends with those who are different. There’s also the Gold Hunter, who like takes Rudolph and Hermey in and accepts them immediately, which is super neat

EmoChristmasMusic: There's also the fact that there value is only seen when they are recognized for a "use" which can apply to some oppressed groups.

not that anyone asked but here are my favorite barbie movies of all eras in chronological order (i put it under the cut so you can just skip past this post if you want):

nutcracker (2001): there’s something so special about it since it’s the first barbie movie (i mean not technically but u know what i mean), i love the music, i love the ballet and the story and i looooove the sugar plum fairy dress. i think it’s my favorite barbie dress and Big Barbie Transformation ™ 

princess and the pauper (2004): this is my absolute favorite barbie movie. i love the songs so much, i still think this movie would make a great musical. i love the dutch voice actors so much, esp erica’s singing voice. i love how the designs are all so unique, which is such a difference from later movies i feel where they just copy designs from previous movies or give everyone the same design (in case you didn’t know im referring mainly to island princess and also 12 dancing princesses a little bit). i love how erica gets the chance to explore her dreams and i love how the love interests here aren’t rushed but actually really realistic. i love annalise and julian i still think they’re underappreciated.

island princess (2008): there are a few movies in between i like, but i don’t love them as much as this one. okay anyway this is my second favorite Big Barbie Transformation ™ or it’s a tie with the nutcracker dress bc wow, ro looks so incredible in that sparkly blue dress. i don’t super care for the rest of this movie i have to admit, im just very soft for princess luciana she’s basically my dream woman. if i could marry her, i would.

fashion fairytale (2010): i just want to point out i don’t really love any of the movies between island princess and fashion fairytale. picking fashion fairytale may seem like an odd choice, i realize that, but i really like it? i don’t know why but it’s just very sweet? i love aunt millicent and i love the animals and even the fairies or pixies are actually okay in this movie i think? and ken is adorable here trying to win barbie back. idk i just think it’s really cute

perfect christmas (2011): this is definitely my favorite christmas movie of the two. i like the idea of re-imagining a christmas carol, but i love this one because it’s a classic christmas movie, barbie style. i like the songs, i love christmas idk this is def my fave ‘barbie and her sisters’ movie

pink shoes (2013): i love that there is no real ‘love interest’ in this movie, i also love how it’s sort of a throwback to the old-school barbie ballet movies. i know some people have problems with it, but i really enjoy it? also i don’t hate the animation? it’s a lot better than what they did 2009/2010 - 2012 imo

secret door (2014): idk why but i don’t hate the movie? i don’t love the idea of ‘introverted girl has a lot of experiences and then she gets really extraverted at the end of the movie’ bc i actually like having an introverted protagonist buttt there is some nice character development there. and i like the songs, esp the villain song. she’s really one of my fave villains. i crack up every time at the end of the movie when her parents come back and are like ‘did you try to take over the kingdom again?’ oh and that yellow dress is so cute!!

puppy adventure (2015): not gonna lie, i love the plot of this movie. i love that they go looking all over town trying to find the treasure, i love the summer vibes, and i guess the puppies are pretty cute too!

star light adventure (2016): definitely my fave more recent barbie movie. i love love the world, i wish we’d gotten to see more of it, it’s beautifully animated, i love that braid and idk about the plot i just mostly really love the aesthetics
