Alcina & exploring her longing

exploring themes of longing with AlciFras today. feel like i spend so much time on Mirifras that i haven't really discussed the other big, rightfully important dynamic in this fic.

I think that Alcina is a rather prideful woman, never wanting to show more of herself to someone than she needs to. It isn't necessarily a conscious choice she makes, rather than just a way she's always lived. I actually believe she has a rather difficult time getting attached to a woman beyond enticing conversation/sex. It's a rarity for someone to truly catch her eye, much like a rare vintage.

...that is until she meets Fraser. There's something about the way her mind works that makes Alcina want to pick it apart, to discuss any and everything there is with her. I feel like not only would this revelation perturb her, it'd scare her in a very discreet way. She unintentionally becomes consumed by the thought of being around her. Of drinking her blood. Consuming her.

Instead that obsession is forced to become longing. She forces herself to remain at a distance, it's for Miranda's sake, so it has to be for a greater purpose right? Sacrificing the needs of flesh will surely put her in Miranda's good graces once and for all, right?

That obsession, due to her commitment to a plan doomed to fail, will always be left unsated. She's damned to long from afar.

okay has anyone else dealt with extreme neat freak housemates? because I feel like I'm losing my mind

I'm not a dirty person, I'm pretty sure. a bit prone to clutter, but not actual dirt. I don't like for the house to be dirty. but there's just been a House Meeting called and when I went to ask the housemate who requested it what was going on- because I hate house meetings that I don't already know the purpose of; it feels like a Wait Until Your Father Gets Home situation and I don't even know what I'm potentially "in trouble" for

and basically they all feel that I'm leaving the kitchen "filthy"

"nobody wants to cook there because it's gross" was the exact quote

I feel like I'm losing my mind, because...I don't think I leave the kitchen gross? I wipe crumbs off the counter; I wipe up spills if and when they happen. the most I've ever noticed when I go in there is a couple of crumbs here and there, genuinely. or when I look over the kitchen after I finish up with a meal

(also this housemate once sent a picture to the group chat with like. five single, spread-out crumbs on the counter individually circled in red. but the thing is, everyone else seems to agree with her)

but I'm also very good at hating myself, so now I'm wondering if I AM somehow disgusting

and of course, my House Meeting tribunal has to convene at some point. the last one made me feel like everything I said was pointless because everyone else put up a united front and shot it all down, so I guess I'm headed for more of the same

#poem #poetry #spilled ink #spilled thoughts #long story short i have made choices in my life such that my only option when i hit this present juncture #was to move home and i am not handling the lack of choice well #in my first year living here especially i bought beautiful fragile things because i love beautiful fragile things and because i thought #i was on the path that my next move would be my last one. i was going to buy a home and that would be it and i'd only need to pack up #my whole life once more and so i could justify the vintage vases and such. but the past couple of years have been brutal on me #and i've made choices that i stand by and choices that i don't and now i'm moving home and it's less than ideal but i'll make it work #perhaps this is short story long #anyway. before i first moved in my roommate texted me from home depot because she and her boyfriend were at home depot #and i was at work at the time. and she wanted to know what color i wanted my room because they were gonna paint my room that day #and i didn't have time to make a decision and she's an artist with a great eye so i sent her my pinterest decor board and said maybe a gree #like this kind of green? and she got this gorgeous green reminiscent of a paris green that looks amazing with all my art on the walls #but i just had to take the art down. i'm in the middle of the task actually. and now it's just this big green expanse #and i'm not feeling so good about leaving this place #but the way i felt so safe and so loved when i got that text and when i got here and saw that the room was painted bc they wanted me to sta #the past few years have been not so good in a lot of ways like i said but this place was an island of peace for me when things were rough #anyway. fragile. thanks for listening

#Tuvok #Kes #comix #idk how to tag this bc of the allusion #st voy #star trek voyager #bea art tag #comix page #star trek #this is not a one to one allegory nor is it meant to be - I am specifically focusing in on the loss of bodily autonomy that occurs when #Kes and Tuvok have their bodies taken over purposefully by men for various reasons which all boil to power. 'Because I could' and Because #they thought Kes or Tuvok wouldn't be able to stop them from doing so. Because they thought they had the power to do so so why wouldn't #they? But again this is not one to one - I interpret and will continue to interpret these instances in many different ways #But something that sticks with me in canon is how 'impervious' Tuvok is made - There is that scene at the end of Warlord which #shows that Kes is affected by what just happened to her - she's confused and hurt and doesn't know what to DO now that the in-the-moment #fight is over and it's time to just keep living and Tuvok comforts her but when he will go on to be taken over again and again and again #there will be no one to comfort him - no one HE can go to - and the narrative doesn't say that there should be. Even when he's #taken over by the BORG (an experience which had a lasting traumatic impact on characters like Seven or Picard - granted they were connected #for a lot longer) this is only mentioned offhandedly. One wonders why it occured at all. There's also how the other two main Vulcans #T'Pol and Spock - when they are forced to act emotionally or are in situations that affect their emotional equilibrium there is a big deal #made about it and they are hurt and ashamed and given some degree of care and comfort by those around them but when Tuvok #is forced into similar situations it is simply assumed he'll get over it - not even just by the other characters but the narrative itself #takes it for granted Ex: 'Workforce' where he forgets ALL his Vulcan training or 'Meld' where Suder's influence #unintentionally makes him lose it and try to kill him...THOUGH I think Suder hugging an unconscious Tuvok is perhaps the closest we get to #someone comforting Tuvok after he's been through that sort of ordeal. I'm not saying Tuvok would WANT others to be hugging him #and offering him emotional comfort etc (he's Vulcan) but I find it interesting that the narrative assumes that the black body (even alien)#is more 'durable' than its white counterparts. 'Stronger'. Assumes that there is no interiority which recoils and sustains the damage #when hurt. That there is nothing worth exploring because there is no impact from the impact. A crater lands and the Soil beneath it is #untouched

thinking this labor day about all the athletes in women's sports who didn't have a stable league, who were only making decent money from a spot on their national team, who had to fight to get even a fraction of what they deserve. who spent their prime without a club league or the infrastructure to propel the sport. who came of age after title 9 in the usa [forcing schools to fund women/girls’ sports], the ones who fought for cbas and are only seeing big change at the end of their careers or after their careers concluded. who didn't have the media attention before, but are now showing just how much they can sell out stadiums and arenas. the players who played year round because overseas teams paid athletes what they were worth. athletes who endured and reported harassment but the league never took appropriate action. athletes who never had the media attention or ability to monetize their talent but who had careers that were just as impressive as the stars of today. who did it without the help of the science, technology, and medicine we have today. who set records with less support and fewer games in a season, which will be broken by kids who have had personal trainers since high school. athletes who played great games that are no long available to view, their talent no longer archived and accessible for young or new fans. athletes who still don't have a league or are just getting one in 2024. athletes who took it upon themselves to create change for which they will never reap the full rewards.

#this is across the board stuff #it's about the wnba the nwsl the pwhl and all the preceding leagues across the sports #im not athletic or good at sports but i do love the social sciences #it is the natural evolution of sport but there are lost generations #like in soccer abby wambach marta christine sinclair none of them had a club league in their prime #like cynthia cooper is the only other true guard that won mvp and she won it twice but you can't watch games from back then #women's hockey in north america is a newer story and perhaps more complex but still the stories of going from chartered planes in college #to not that in what is supposed to be a professional league #this is one of the reasons why i think we need more athlete's memoirs #like of course i want the juicy off court stuff i'm human but the amount of organizing and advocacy that athletes have had to do #nwsl #wbna #pwhl #and i want to be clear i'm not subtweeting specific players here in a mean way it's just facts #that if you are playing more games per year in your prime and you have more advanced knowledge #about recovery and training you have more opportunities to raise the bar #i actually get emo about this stuff all the time but i figured it's topical today

Similarly to Epel he has insecurities regarding his body. Unlike him he doesn't go nuts when the spotlight goes to his feminine features, only when his age or mental maturity is questioned due his looks Floyd is an exception because anything he says makes Riddle explode.

He used to take great pride in his idea that he is mentally more prepared for adulthood than most boys his age, that he knew better than his childish classmates, before he was humbled in book 1. Post OB he still thinks he is book smart and mature but does he know how much he has yet to learn, though he still finds rather insulting to underestimate him for age or looks. Summary: call him a child and the effect would be the same as calling him short

Whilst Epel is focused on the conservative sense of masculinity, Riddle aspires to be a gentleman. To be exact, he has taken a liking to victorian etiquette on how to be proper during courtship rituals.

I think he would find tips such as "don't flirt with every lady you meet and don't assume every (young) woman is eager to fall in love with you; maintain a dignified reserve"; "be ready to act the knight if a lady in your company is attacked"; "don't get a innocent woman her hopes up" or "neither party should make the other jealous" quite tasteful. Of course, he's sensible enough to know which habits of 200 years ago he should cross out

Mr Roseheart is probably the one Riddle got his Japanese inheritance from, as it is weird to believe Mrs Rosehearts would chance her last name if she is a big name in the magical medicine industry. Unless his husband was the most prominent figure and she got more prestige with this marriage, unlikely in my opinion as controlling people like her usually take a dominant role in the relationship. So I suppose it's either a case in which each pattner keeps its surname or Mr Roseheart was who changed his

Riddle is autistic but his mother didn't make him go to any tests because she wants to believe his son is "normal". I'm under the impression she could be the type to be ableist just because (sadly many doctors are this insensitive and out of touch despite the irony of their fields) OR she doesn't discriminate neurodivergent people but doesn't want hers to be because she firmly believed if little Riddle knew he was autistic he would use his diagnosis to avoid facing the things he could struggle with or excuse "lazy" behaviour with it or she knows how ableist others can be and wanted to disguise him by making him a functional, well-adjusted neurodivergent individual.

Her reasoning? If he is capable of adjusting and is unaware of his autism he won't try to use "the easy way out of" when confronted about his struggles and he won't be bullied by his peers; don't mistake this as a kind gesture from a mother with good intentions but terrible execution. She believes if he was bullied during his studies he could drop out off medicine and she hasn't been preparing him to be a doctor like her for all his childhood to get her plans frustrated by an external factor such as how his classmates perceive him.

Therefore making him believe he is like the rest + homeschooling would "prevent" this outcome because neither he would interact with possible bullies nor he would know what's "normal" for kids his age so he wouldn't feel different because he didn't have a chance to interact with other children.

Plus interacting with adults and certain kids deemed intellectual enough would enhance his possibilities of "growing out of any annoying habits inherently from young kids" (emotional outburst and "childish stuff" she doesn't like). Which I think is way worse than if she was simply an ignorant ableist doctor, but also makes her a more manipulative and calculating character than what we know of her so far.

It could also make sense as for why she was so mad his son made friends she didn't approve of beforehand, because the only way he could have had external interactions would be handpicked by her.

She probably thinks #going for advice would mean believing she is doing it wrong and either she's unaware that her parental work is bad or refuses to admit it #either way looks in character imo #idk she doesn't seem to like kids. Can't be a kids doc bc how would you not know what they actually need if you work 24/7 w them #likely a doctor who only deals with adults 80-90% of the time and expects children to be as mature and logical as her #Maybe she was that kid who felt superior and mature and that's why the “if I was this way my kid should be too”#Enough talking about that woman. #web weaving #sort of?#i never feel like my edits really fit #they're more like collages #anyway...me on my island with the one other tudor fan that liked AB 2021 lol #'our expectations were low but holy fuck' sounds like a lot of consternation about a pretty...solid script?#what i loved most about it was moments like the above #the ability to summarize really complex dynamics borne of circumstance #in such a way that you can believe in the world and it serves as its own 'previously on' that a miniseries inherently lacks #esp when it only covers five crucial months #tl; dr there's a lot of smugness evident in many books of this genre #when it comes to anne's attitude towards her stepdaughter #bcus she was quote proven wrong unquote; becaues mary got quote the last laugh unquote...#when really. as per the quotes i've been posting #it doesn't seem like mary's reconciliation with her father was the idyll many have made it #thus we have anne's letter #and offer. knowing that others are offering her better futures #but saying this is the best future you could have. limited time only.#and it seems the future proved her right; not wrong (at least the immediate future)#bcs while matters; had she accepted; might not've been substantially better than they were under the auspices of a 'more gentle' stepmother #it also doesn't really seem like they would have been substantially worse #anne was right that her enemy's supporters wanted her disgraced and/or dead. she was right in that they wanted elizabeth disgraced #and/or dead. she couldn't have predicted what happened to herself in the exact matter it did- mainly bcus it was unprecedented #but it seems she had a pretty clear view of what mary was doing: playing both sides. attempting to ingratiate herself to her father while #also conspiring against him. and she knew it would have been better to have her on side #(and in a more jaundiced view: have her where she could watch what she was doing; who she was seeing)#but perhaps underestimated how impossible it would be to get her there in the first place #('on side' ; that is. not at court. although probably not that either. with the conditions she demanded)#but her fears of mary were not paranoia. they seem to have been grounded in realism #and a clear view of the situation at home and abroad

yazs faith in my fic mostly amounts to no alcohol and vegetarian jelly babies and vague religious anxiety on occasion, partially bc i dont know a lot about islam so i dont really have a lot to work with and partially because the show doesnt really give us a whole lot to work with either

but i do kinda like how, especially in this current fic where i give her a sort of explicit eating disorder past, that like, the main ways that god ends up playing a role in her daily life this way is through what she puts in her mouth or not

if the doctor is restrictive, emotionally psychologically nutritionally, and the master is excessive, yaz sort of hovers in the middle, pulled at from both sides

seduced by restriction vs seduced by excess. swallowing your anger vs spitting it out. desire and consumption and the way the human and the holy meet in the fallible body. you can become the doctor by acting like the doctor. you can make yourself holy by Doing The Right Actions

AND WE'RE JUST GONNA MOVE PAST THAT????????? literally NO one else has been said to be able to do this #and like. hm. is it. is it... love??#like you know how zelda and her powers are implied to work the same. they focus on protecting the one(s) they love & their powers activate #(i know people theorise that mipha was going to tell zelda her power works when she thinks about link but i've always thought she was going #to say that it works when she thinks about saving the person under her care. because it doesnt really make sense to me that her healing #would work for other people if she was only focused on saving link you know? so i've always thought it was just 'saving the people i love')#and zelda is technically able to do this with link after he wakes up and he's the only person her powers woke for #so does this work maybe like an inverse or an extension of how their powers usually work? like instead of it just being their love for the #other person it's the other person/people's love or reciprocated love for them. zelda & link are implied to have really only had each other #but mipha. mipha had a family and a whole kingdom. she was connected to nearly all of them when she passed and both these events #are said to have taken place shortly after she fell. in the dlc she asks link to pass on a message to sidon for her implying that she #can no longer speak to him as she once could. perhaps that's just her power waning over time but if you think about it in the context #of how the domain is slowly losing people who knew her and those who remain only remember her for what she did for them rather than who #she truly was then could she have stopped being able to connect with them because there was no one left who loved her as they once did.#loved her for who she was.#was she in vah ruta reaching out for her father and brother and realising slowly that they were forgetting her #...
