so uh me and my family went to go see ghost busters world iceborne today and it was fine kinda??
i do want to talk about it since i have a lot of feelings about it despite only seeing this and the original
but first actual thing that genuinely is awful that i do want to make known: if you’ve seen trailers you might know that the movie got sponsored by booking.com and yes they do shoehorn it in the movie. booking.com has very positive ties to israel because y’know travel agency and is one of several companies the bds suggests pressure boycotting so please please please do not ignore that fact about the movie please please please please do not support booking.com. do boycott booking.com.
uh spoilers below the cut i guess?
ok actual positives because i fucjing loved the ghost designs. cgi wasn’t great at points (main bad guy ghost dude i forget the name of looked best when obscured in shadows and not actually shown in detail) but the designs were at least done well. and phoebe and melody’s relationship was cute yet was done so fucking dirty. the movie did have good jokes and the acting was really solid, the world building is cool, and yeah if you turn your brain off for most of the film it’s fun. only when there’s action and ghosts is it actually compelling i noticed and it’s really sad since a good chunk of the movie is not that.
there’s too much plot ok. it’s your run of the mill family drama with ghosts sometimes there. i’m tired of the family is forever shit when it isn’t found family or paints the parents as “flawed but well meaning” and having the dad be lovingly stupid (gary’s technically not the biological dad but he does do dumb dad—pretty much flanderized homer simpson you know the trope), the mom strict to a fault but is right in the end, and incompetent brother who’s trying his best but needs a little help. most families are not like this. most families are dysfunctional in their own ways. you don’t have to have physically abusive parents or unsupportive parents to have shitty parents. painting families in this very generic way sets a really really unhealthy expectation that if your parents aren’t openly pieces of shit you aren’t allowed to hate them or if you defy them you’re automatically in the wrong.
but then there’s phoebe. oh is there phoebe.
i hate how in movies now to get across female empowerment is just make the girl super smart and be shoved in the spotlight too often. she is not interesting at all i’m sorry. you can tell she’s the smart one because she wears glasses and likes science isn’t that quirky? seriously when are we going to just get a strong female lead who has interests that aren’t tomboyish or *insert school subject here*? filmmakers do know that girls and women are also human beings with a wide range of individual likes and dislikes that can’t be reduced to tropes right??? again creating the unrealistic expectation that women cannot be treated like normal people unless they’re uber smart or uber strong. this is a problem for all minoritized group representation and i really cannot hate anyone who doesn’t like how the film industry is trying to bend over backwards for groups to force in representations that only hurt them.
biggest sin is she is not interesting on her own. she is so tropey it’s a fucking travesty. melody the ghost girl was the only compelling person—the only one who made phoebe somewhat interesting to watch—and of course she’s not safe from being a trope. i don’t like how melody has to have direct ties to bad guy mcbad and the sudden turnaround that, while it paid off for her, was rushed to hell and back for the drama.
and worst of all, there was homoerotic tension between phoebe and melody and nothing ever happens.
please just let them hold hands.
i know this is a mainstream movie so two people of the same sex even brushing up against one another is a crime but.
they were cute together and fueled several ghost au fanfic ideas.
damn you film industry.

I wish I liveblogged about monster hunter lmao. It was a wild ride.
Spoilers for mhw below lmao
I start the game
I follow the main quests exclusively
I'm too afraid to do any big hunts by myself and make a friend or my Partner In Cringe help me whenever possible
I run for my life from rathalos and rathian when I find them
Anjanath is my biggest enemy and my greatest fear
Spent most of my time going on expeditions to get endemic life for my room.
I have 3 forest pteryx and I love them deeply
I make it into High Rank somehow
Still haven't soloed either rath. Still haven't solo'd much of anything
Enter: Bazelgeuse, more lovingly called the B-52 bomber.
This fucker is my paralysis demon. I am VERY AFRAID of him.
He ruins many of my hunts
Also enter Deviljho. Known colloquially as a Pickle. I finally get why ff14 content creator Drak referred to that one boss as a Pickle.
He ruins many hunts that Bazelgeuse didn't
I hate them both. Partner tells me we're gonna hunt a B-52 bomber to try to make me less afraid. It doesn't work but I appreciate the effort.
Game eventually wants me to kill elder dragons. I put this off as long as possible.
Get bored of waiting (and also forgot I was supposed to get PiC to help, we ended up fucking up a bunch of black diablos that day instead)
Accidentally pick the easiest one to deal with. Kill it on my first attempt of the mission.
Also learn that the Girros are suffering from cordyceps fungus. Hate that.
Pick the single most annoying one second, also by accident. Beg PiC to help me because I don't have the APM or skill to control the WIMDY FUMKIN BOY. L + Ratio + I'm too fresh to MH
I cause the mission to fail so we try again. Goes better.
Then we meet Toaster.
Good boy 10/10 I'm afraid of him too
Very good fight
I'm now Master Rank and have entered Iceborne. Except not really.
I'm undergeared in the sense that I'm not building with any specific idea in mind, so I can't even get past the first iceborne encounter
I now have to farm rathalos, odogaron and Toaster for gear. This is non negotiable.
I keep getting distracted by endemic life
Any time Bazelgeuse, Deviljho, rathalos or rathian show up uninvited- actually when ANYTHING shows up uninvited. They get dung pods to the face.
I now carry excessive amounts of animal shit in my inventory to make more.
Tonight alone I:
Finished my Flying Kadachi Strikebow after grinding forever yesterday
Anjanath AND Rathian almost ruined my last capture, but somehow I managed to time a flash pod with Rathian knocking over my Critically Wounded Target, blinded everyone, trapped the Tobi-Kadachi amongst the chaos, and tranquilized it before it (or I) met an untimely demise. I never want to do this again.
Hunted One (1) Odogaron and was immediately overstimulated
Hunted a Kirin because I didn't want to negotiate with a rathalos after the above overstimulation

// One aspect of Arkyn’s character I never really explored back in the day was just how crippling years upon years of isolation would have been. His only companions in the ice caverns were the creatures he’d find to kill and eat. He never knew when he might find the way out, just hunting, killing, eating, and sleeping on repeat, praying he’d see the light of day some time soon.
When I first revised Arkyn’s lore to have him be one of the original iceborn, I thought he might have spent around 200-500 years underground based on Lissandra’s lore and general guesstimation. However, the official timeline came out a while back and showed that Avarosa’s rebellion against the watchers happened ten THOUSAND years before the current Runeterra timeline.
Solitary confinement is recognized as torture if it goes on for more than 15 days. Arkyn went 10k years without ever seeing another humans’ face. While he wasn’t entirely alone as he could explore the caverns and hunt, it’s still hard to believe someone’s mind could last that long seeing as humans are naturally social creatures. The only way I was able to rationalize Arkyn’s “sanity” is to add into his lore that he occasionally went into a hibernation-like stasis, passing hundreds of years and thinking it was a single nights’ rest.
As I was thinking on this, I was reminded of a few panels from one of my favorite manwa, Survival Story of a Sword King in a Fantasy World. Several panels under the cut (Spoilers for chapters 56-57 of Sword King Story)
Part of Arkyn, much like Ryu Han-Bin, still remains in those caverns. He spent vastly more time under the ice than he has above it. Arkyn’s managed to find ways to cope, but the crippling loneliness and isolation he felt are certainly a major source of trauma for him. Not only that, but the watchers are canonically the top dogs of the void. The most powerful of the lovecraftian horrors from Runeterra’s universe. The same monsters that bestowed Arkyn’s people with their magic, and the monsters Arkyn fought against in a war to overthrow them. If he wasn’t already traumatized by the years spent underground, he’s definitely got some eldritch horror trauma.
I think this is definitely a part of Arkyn I will try to explore more as I continue to write him, seeing as I’ve now returned from my long hiatus. He’s someone who has seen things others wouldn’t imagine, and while he does a pretty good job of masking it, there’s a lot to unpack. I thought I had written almost all there was to write about Arkyn, but as it turns out, Riot’s lore revisions have given me even more writing fuel and have twisted this poor icicle’s story into an even more convoluted one than I had ever planned.

Top 5 pieces of boss music?
Alright, here come the 5 most predictable answers to anyone who knows anything about me; in no particular order. I'll link to the music in the titles of each.
*These are subject to change anytime effective immediately after posting, these are just the top 5 at top-of-mind and I fully reserve the right to forget some of my favorites
**Spoilers under the cut for: Dark Souls III, NieR Replicant, FF7R **
Soul Of Cinder - Dark Souls III
I've rambled before at length (here) why I love the reprise of Gwyn's theme at the end of the DS series. It's such a great bookend, you fight backward through time against all the chosen undead and bearers of the curse before you, all the way back to the one who threw the entire cosmology of this world off its axis.
Song of The Ancients / Fate - NieR Replicant 1.22...
I'm such a sucker for a piece or motif that grows and shifts over the course of a game, as it gains more context and meaning. The power behind the twins' duet in this version makes the following scenes heartbreaking. I get misty eyed every time.
Abyssal Star - Monster Hunter World: Iceborne
Namielle's theme is the musical equivalent of capturing an entire sea storm in 360° 8K from the deck of an old 3 mast ship. Every choice in arrangement, scoring and gesture sells the idea of wind, rain, waves, electricity, lightning, and unfathomably deep sea waters perfectly. Namielle's designers and composers completely snapped when they made this Elder Dragon.
Contact With You - Armored Core 6
I talked a lot about this one in this post. Learning to play AC6 properly against Balteus this track in my ear changed me. Sublime. Listen for the single major chord near the end.
One Winged Angel - SPECIFICALLY from FF7 Remake
Ok, the thing is; I never played FF7 growing up, so I don't have nostalgia goggles for One Winged Angel. I've just heard it time and time again through cultural osmosis and when it pops up in other media. It's a certified banger of a boss theme.
BUT
The thing that shook me about the FF7R version how the the game spends its entire runtime teasing you with little bits and pieces of OWA, drip feeding you with snippets of music it knows you know is an omen of something very very bad coming. And then! ....It sounds off? You finally face off against Sephiroth and his theme is rearranged, remixed. Parts are shuffled around and cut short, but it still sounds great. Great, but wrong. It never even does the BUM! BUM! BUM! BUM! thing.
UNTIL! Sephiroth catches Cloud at swordpoint and it becomes extremely clear he was toying with you up until now and THEN OWA starts over, playing in full, in order, in glorious remastered terror. It condensed the 23 years of fear I should have felt towards Sephiroth and blasted it into my brain over the course of 15-20 minutes. I'll never forget how cold it made my blood run when the REAL theme started.

"I don't have a type, or anything"
Behold, my work in progress novels, Iceborn and Marina, compared side by side:
Light-haired female protagonist: ✅
Brunette white boy love interest: ✅
Secret sibling that the main character doesn't know about: ✅ (This is gonna be a big spoiler for the Marina readers, whoops)
A journey to discover the truth about the main character's heritage and past: ✅
Dead parents: ✅
Obsession with the stars: ✅
Realistically, I understand that these two stories are /very/ different from each other, especially when it comes to their tones, settings, and especially side characters, but man the list just keeps on going.

Haven't posted in a few weeks, have I?
Welp, school shit got more busy, people celebrated shit, and I got really addicted to Monster Hunter World.
Actually, while I'm at it, I'll make this a post about just that: Monster Hunter World
So, let's start by making clear what it actually is: Monster Hunter World is a game where you hunt monsters, with other people if you want, or solo (as I do). There's a few areas, each with different monsters to hunt, at multiple difficulties (for different tiers of loot, damage dealt and received, and monsters). Some monsters returned from past titles, others are brand new. There's also a DLC, Iceborne, which adds a lot of stuff but I don't have it.
SPOILER ALERT FROM THIS POINT ONWARD
Now, with that basis set, let's move to what I really want to discuss: My favourite monsters.
We'll make this a list, actually, and why I like each of them as much as I do.
Spot 3: Odogaron, the Cruel Claw Wyvern
An original addition from Monster Hunter World, the Odogaron is quite a tricky beast to slay at first, and one you'll be forced to fight to progress the story at a certain point. It's quite an agile foe, and can deal a lot of damage, in part due to its Bleed effect. It has a large maw, quadrupedal shape, and two rows of claws on each paw, and ears carrion when it has to, but is entirely capable of killing anything in its habitat as well.
It's a monster that lends itself to a very dodge-based and aerial playstyle, and will always be an intense fight, especially if you make the mistake of trying to place raw meat as bait, which will get it to be enraged.
To fight it, I mostly stick to my Ice weapon, which has been an Insect Glaive all game long, even though I've pivoted toward a different weapon as my primary. The immensely agile and aerial nature of the Insect Glaive makes this fight easier... If you can get the right extracts from this speed demon of a beast. It makes for a very entertaining fight though, because it's a fight of two immensely agile, immensely deadly beings.
However, the Bleed effect is annoying to get rid of, requiring you to crouch and stand still or take vast damage over time... which is very very bad when fighting this monster. It also occasionally gets interrupted by a Radobaan or a Great Girros, which interrupts the flow of the fight quite a bit.
It's armour set and weapons all look incredible though, and I mean it. Truly, there are few sets that look better, both in the base game and in all that I've seen of Iceborne. It's fire element is a bit... useless for weapons, in most of the fights I've had. It also doesn't feature my favourite weapon types, so that's not quite as enjoyable. However, the armour bonuses are incredible, especially Speed Sharpener.
Overall, an incredible monster to fight. Great addition to the franchise!
Spot 2: Tobi-Kadachi, the Flying Thunder Wyvern / the Flying Spark
Another original addition from World, this flying squirrel of lightning is similar to the Odogaron, though encountered far earlier. It's quite fast, moves through the air occasionally, and can release vast amounts of Thunder damage, as well as inflicting Thunderblight, a very inconvenient effect.
I like it for similar reasons as Odogaron, primarily its agile and aggressive style that can be countered in much the same way. It also lives in more vertical environments, allowing for a lot of Plunging attacks, which are always fun.
The Thunderblight effect is quite annoying though, as it increases your chance of being Stunned, an effect that can take you out of the fight for a time... and can doom you entirely.
I tend to switch around what weapons I use here. Anything from Hammer, to Double Blades, to even a Greatsword.
It's equipment entirely makes up for the annoying effect though, because it's amazing. The armour isn't anything amazing to look at, but it has some decent set bonuses, and the weapon selection you can craft from it is immaculate. My main weapon went from being a Pulsar Rod insect glaive, to now being a Kadachi Fang Katana. I love it, it's perfect, it's a really cool fight... just gets interrupted by Rathalos and Rathian too often to be the #1 spot.
Spot 1: Legiana, the Wind Drifting Wyvern
An unpopular choice, and yet another original addition from World! Truly, they nailed the new Monsters with it. It's a flying creature, found in an incredibly beautiful environment with tons of verticality, and its roar, to me, has a haunting beauty, somehow. It's hard to explain in more detail, because it has to be experienced.
When I first fought it, as the story required me to, I used my Tobi-Kadachi Insect Glaive. And it was the most fun fight I've ever had! Truly, this is two fast, flying, deadly creatures in as fair of a fight as you're ever gonna have. It will try to get you, you will try to get it, and it's like two jet fighters in a dog fight. The only thing that can stop you is it's Iceblight effect, which will make your stamina drain far faster. There's nullberries all around to clear it easily, but you can usually just outlast it, no issue.
If the fight itself isn't fun enough, the equipment is gonna make up for it. Easily. The armour sets are beautiful, the weapons look incredible, and the set bonuses are decent, too! Truly, I have no room to critique it, because there is nothing to critique.
I have nothing bad to say about it, aside from its music being a bit too... boring. Also, in one Investigation I did, a Bazelgeuse kept interrupting, which is immensely painful to be around due to its explosive nature. Outside of that, nothing has ever interrupted to make the fight worse, just a Tzitzi-Ya-Ku that stunned all parties involved, making it more of a funny interruption than an annoying one.
Truly, a 10/10 on all levels (except soundtrack) for me.
And that's that! My 3 favourites, listed from least to most favourite. Do with that what you will, repost with your own opinion, whatevs, just keep it civil. A
Have a great day :)
