Of course it's fucking THESEUS

okay. i havent shut up about the greek myth aspects of Simon's story and i wont stop now. At first it was a statue of Persephone in the garden, with it's head replaced to be Betty, giving the implication that Betty is the Persephone to Simon's Hades, and it was Simon's status as an antiquarian. and now we've gotten Simon being a huge nerd and bringing up Theseus completely unprompted (so real)

a bit of context in case you need it, Theseus was one of those greek "legendary Heroes" (Achilles, Heracles, etc.), and previously King of Athens, but had managed to dodge most bad things that happen to Greek heroes. he was just stupid and i guess they took pity on him.

The Ship of Theseus or "Theseus' Paradox", which I'd imagine all of tumblr knows by now, but if you don't, is the question on whether if a ship, specifically Theseus', is still the same ship after having all of its parts replaced exactly. To me this makes for such an obvious connection to Simon. Simon's story factors around identity, first and foremost. (yknow. "I Remember You" and all that?) The concept of not knowing what you are fundamentally was originally Ice King's thing, as his previous life as Simon was essentially history. But now that's being brought to Simon. and Simon has the lucidity to process what that means for him.

Today in the Department of Before They Were Star Trek Stars, William Shatner guest stars in "Killer Instinct," episode 1 of the third season of The Defenders (original air date September 23, 1961).

Shatner plays the law firm's client of the week, an ex-commando who accidentally kills a man when he fights back after being accosted in the street.

Other Trek connections:

Shatner's wife is played by Joanna Linville, who played the Romulan commander in the Star Trek episode "The Enterprise Incident."

Kermit Murdock plays the District Attorney in "Killer Instinct" and the Prosecutor in the Star Trek episode "All Our Yesterdays." Typecasting!

So Mr. Malice is an ex-legion guy who works as an escort He's aroace and just does sex work for extra money when not working as a bodyguard. He works to free child slaves and women from the legion (Either by buying them out of there or sneaking them out.) Everyone in the legion thinks he's dead.

My other legion oc (Currently legion) Cyrius, Is a female hiding as a male legion soldier, and works as a messenger. Her actual name is Iris and she was sold into the legion when she was 16ish by her parents, who hoped she would be fed and taken care of the bare minimum amount. She was treated like a female slave would be treated in the legion.. not very good. Until Mr. Malice (His full name is Icarus Malice) bought her as a "slave wife" but he actually treated her like a human being and they were more friends than anything. When Icarus faked his death she managed to get free of being a slave because papers doccumenting her 'ownership' got 'lost' and she pretended to be a recruit.

Mother Rosemary was a new Cannanite who left a while back to work as a trader around the time Joshua left. She ended up in a small settlement and married a man there. She found out she was unable to have children of her own, so she took in children that were abandoned or their parents could not care for them. Her actual name is Rose Maree, And Mother Rosemary is a nickname given to her by the children she cares for. She opened an orphanage after her husband passed away, and eventually ended up taking in children who had been enslaved by the legion and freed, or orphaned by the legion. She works with Mr. Malice to do this.

Rewatching TNG's "The Icarus Factor," and I genuinely forgot how much of a dick Riker's dad is.

I think he might actually be one of the worst dads in Trek, and I know how high of a bar that is.

Riker's dad literally shows up after 15 years and has the stone-cold AUDACITY to show up and expect Will to not only give him the time of day, but to act like their relationship is fine actually.

Like he actually tells Will TO HIS FACE "I stuck it out for 13 years. If that's not good enough, that's too bad." Like wow man.

He's a raging asshole and I really have no idea why the narrative and some of the characters are treating Will like the unreasonable one. Pulaski actually told Will to his face to "jettison the emotional baggage" like damn fuck you lady.

And like. My relationship with my dad is - shall we say - complex. But hot damn even my dad at least has the emotional maturity to acknowledge the way he treated us wasn't great. It was all of once and he's never said it again, but he did in fact say it.

But Riker's dad is like "hey son it's been 15 years, I'm doing great. Heard cool things about you, btw your ex is a smoke show." In fairness, he makes the remark about Troi to her face instead of Will's, but I feel like that's worse?

Though I love how Pulaski is confronting Riker's dad over him and Will having an anbo-jytsu match instead of y'know. Abandoning his son. As a teen. But yeah, let's focus on how two grown men are gonna beat each other with sticks.

Like. No one, not even Troi, has said to Will "hey, I'm sorry your dad is a giant dickwad who ditched you when you were a kid. That sucks." Instead everyone is like "wow fathers and sons are weird."

And yeah, okay, Riker's dad was grieving the death of his wife while trying to raise a son. But he's still an absolute goon of a man who abandoned his son and has the gall to act like he's the injured party somehow.

And then they have one half-assed heart-to-heart and apparently it's fine now?

Aelyn

Born into a chaos worshiping cult that lives below Icarus. Was raised and shaped to be the next leader, and decided to leave gender behind in the process. Was sent out to track the group to find their deity who was recently released.

Darien (A)

From the same cult as Aelyn. Volatile and very angry about being passed up as leader - he will meet Chaos for himself and have his word be law.

El

Secondary doctor to Monty's primary position and lives in a plague-ridden town that barely has anyone left. There's a lot about El that he doesn't want people to know, but boy he do love him wife.

Eva

Prodigy mechanic and automaton maker that lives in Icarus with her adoptive mother. Creator of Ferro and Dog - though people are not sure how she was able to make her personal automatons so much more advanced than normal.

Ferro & Dog

Eva's most advanced creations - to the point of them being considered sentient. This is due to Eva's magic. Dog has had to be "reupped" a couple of different times. Losing all the training and memories from before each time. Ferro is far more advanced and hasn't had to be "reupped" yet. Though he is terrified for when that happens as he doesn't want to lose himself.

Julius

The head of the Wings of Icarus and acts as chaperone to the group to make sure they do what they're supposed to do. Frequently bickers with Markus.

Lila (A)

Eva's mirror twin. Was thrown into an asylum at four years old after an incident in the square where she broke down. With no one to claim her that is where she has stayed for the past decade. Reportedly.

Lucy

El's wife and former asylum inmate before the big breakout. Very proper, very calculating, very unnerving.

Magdelena

Holds herself very poised, but coiled like a snake. The adoptive mother of Eva and dragged into things by her ex-lover, Markus. Supplies Eva with metals to use when she can due to her own witchly magic.

Markus

Tall, attractive, and an absolute dillpickle. Markus is the one who accidentally unleashes Chaos after touching the jewel and names his ex - Maggie - as conspirator to drag her down with him. Ringleader of the traveling Circus Troupe/Thieves Ring. (I feel like it's important to note that Markus hasn't seen Maggie in near a decade.)

Monty

Sadness masked with a blanket of waning hope and determination that barely helps keep him alive. Primary doctor of a town that's slowly dying to the plague.

Scarlette

Rarely seen without her trademark red lipstick - Scarlette is another ex-lover of Maggie's due to a huge misunderstanding between the two of them. She cares so much for Eva (and only Eva, according to her) that she goes along to help the group so they don't die to the prison collars.

Sophia

Markus' confidant and acts as a knife-throwing tattooed woman in the circus. Was also caught in the theft, but was not the one who touched the jewel.

Vienna

Another one of Markus' troupe that was captured that night. A gremlin by nature, she uses her small form and high energy to use as a grave robber and pickpocket. Has a problem with the drink.

Carmen Rykov: Carmen is Elizabeth’s older brother when they were reunited she introduced him to her friends/team when they were 11, Elena and Carmen didn’t start dating until they were 16 and eventually get married after having an on and off relationship through adulthood.

Sport: Elena has been on a boxing team since she moved in with her mum run by the local PCYC she eventually gets a scholarship for it going into high school. Her mum could barley afford it but scraped by for the money to give Elena the opportunities it could give her

Character story:

Elena lived with her dad, Stepmum and little brother until she was 10 her mum didn’t have custody due to her drug addiction but when her mutation surfaced her parents didn’t want a mutant for a daughter. her home life was relatively absent of parental figures given after her father remarried he wanted to focus on his new family and his wife didn’t want his old family to be part of their life. When her parents kicked her out she decided to head to Liberty city where her mum lived on the way she met Elizabeth and they spend three months travelling across the country to get there.

Over the next 2-3 years they meet up with the rest of what will become the renegades team, Elena dates and breaks up with Scarlett and takes custody of her half brother Ethan bringing him into the care of her mother after his mutation surfaces. The next year the renegades fall apart for various reasons that will be looked into their various character sheets, Elena discovers she’s pregnant by her boyfriend of a few months shortly after they break up deciding to have an abortion and retire from vigilantism.

When she’s 16-17 the renegades reform she takes the mantle of Karma back up and begins to date Carmen. She gets a job at a bar and puts herself through college in order to pursue criminal law.

Lucas is an ex military therapist who moves to Milton Haven after being sent back due to his ptsd triggers and hallucinations.So,he sets up an office in the state park (I know weird location) but theirs Max who works Homa Mart and well has severe anger issues and his wife and the court making him go to mandated sessions causing him to pull a stunt that caused his untimely dismise.Desmond is the paranoid Lighthouse keeper of Icarus Point and well he talks about the unknown nightmares he has of a past man in a fedora and the men in black,He one night went to check the logs and the events of the lighthouse light going out and the crash with the Rainbow chemical happend and the other events that also took place. Virginia is a lure pill maker.She works the machine (found in Max's tape) to make animal lure pills and well she doesn't like being looked at due to the last incedent of a box fell on her and busted her face up,which she either hid under the machine or in a room where no one can find her. Rosemary was a radiowoman during the war she would message Lucas by the radios of her finding of some weird chemical barrels or anything left by Mayer,she left to get as much info as possible.Allen is schizophrenic scientists of Mayer,which finding out about the truth and wanting to help anyone who was harmed by the chemical and well Mayer didn't like that.Rainbow is the name of Lucas's Sphinx cat that he found in a puddle of the rainbow chemical and bathed him and gave him a good home,but that's not the only thing it wears a fedora and a small cat trenchcoat and it talks like some 1920s gangster? I genuinely love this but may I counter this with Midsummer Night’s Dream?

If you aren’t a complete theatre nerd like I am, here’s a quick summary. Yes. This is deemed quick. Theseus (yes, the minotaur dude) and Hyppolyta (yes, the amazon) are set to get married and have 4 days of festivities. Some nobleguy is pissed his daughter Hermia bc he wants her to marry Demetrius, but she’s in love with this other dude, Lysander. Theseus gives her until his wedding to figure it out. Hermia and Lysander plan to run away but Demetrius follows. In the forest, the fairy king and queen are beefing and the king tells his servant, Puck, to love potion the fuck outta his wife and also Demetrius bc he’s been a bitch to his ex-gf Helena. A whole bunch of shit happens, everyone is in love with the wrong person (except Demetrius), Puck fixes it all and then breaks the 4th wall in a monolog to the audience, telling them it was all a dream.

The first thing I’d like to show is the maze. The maze is meant to parallel the Labyrinth in Theseus’s mythology, as there are several minotaur statues sprinkled about. Felix was trapped in the whole mess with Oliver’s lies and was so close to escaping before flying too close to the sun and falling(being genuinely infatuated with him, trusting him enough to drink the wine). This is also mirrored in his costume, with the white tank top and golden angel wings.

The next thing I saw was the comparisons between Puck and Oliver. Puck is as less than the other faries (he’s literally called a hobgoblin), which mirrors Oliver’s economic status and the whole scene where the Cattons literally shit talk him. Oliver’s costume for his party has antlers, and Puck is almost constantly shown with little antlers or horns on his head. Another thing is Oliver’s monologue to Elspeth, his lies, his manipulation of the whole family to absolutely adore him, specifically Farleigh and Felix.

Not to mention Farleigh briefly wearing a donkey head at the party in reference to Nick Bottom, who Puck turned his head into a donkey (literally calling him an ass), the Theseus statue on the lawn, Elspeth dressed as Queen Tatiana, and other costume references in the party (a direct parallel to the party in MSND)

Anyway, still hella processing what I just watched, but I hope you like my lil analysis :]

the way felix is convinced he's living in a romance movie to the extent that he dresses up like juliet. he considers kissing oliver in the maze. he makes himself off limits but not quite with the open door while he's in the bath; he's the damsel of the film, no doubt. but felix's tragedy is that oliver is convinced it's a horror story and a tale of revenge. so he doesn't play his part as romeo. he vomits up the poison so he can't die from "some poison more" and leaves felix to die alone.

Also earlier I tried to look through your blog for your (written) works so I can send in more meaningful asks, but I couldn't find anything. ;w; Would you kindly describe some of your pieces?

Ah yes - the elusive pieces you are looking for are because I actually haven't actually uploaded much here! (I'm deeply terrified of people stealing my words or ideas - which is something I'm slowly trying to work on especially if I actually want people interested in my work!)

My pieces are as follows though, and I'll try to get in depth!

All Things Concerning Chaos is about a band of misfits quite literally tasked with capturing the embodiment of Chaos, which Markus (Ringleader of a troupe of circus-based thieves) unleashed by trying to steal from the Ruler of Icarus.

Magdelena and her daughter Eva are dragged in by Markus as he points them as insiders who helped - even though that couldn't be further from the truth. He just wanted to get back at his ex-girlfriend for leaving him in the first place and if he was going down, he was taking her with him.

The story follows them as they travel all over the post-apocalyptic planet (notably by train) as they have three years to complete their task before their prison collars (collars quite literally locked in place around their neck) go off, slicing their necks and killing them instantly.

It's a very character-driven story as well and the cast are as follows:

Magdelena - Eva's adoptive mother and a witch who can turn things to different forms of metal.

Eva - Arguably the main-main character and is a prodigy whose specialty is creating automatons, she is also a witch that can breathe life into things - within reason.

Ferro & Dog - Two of Eva's personal works and automatons. Dog is less complex and takes the shape of a large metal canine that acts as protection for Eva, and Ferro is VERY complex and based upon a human being. After having life breathed into him, he's almost human. But they don't know what happens when it "runs out" as it frequently does with Dog.

Scarlette - One of Maggie's Ex's and is a witch that can manipulate with her voice. She's very protective of Eva and her breakup with Maggie can be understood as a huge misunderstanding.

Markus - Ringerleader of Abbadon's Circus and the head of the thieving troupe it really is. Prideful and has hella bad eyeliner. He's also my personal favorite of the whole cast.

Sophia - an older and wise lady that acts as Markus' confidant. Also a witch that can manipulate the tattoos on her body into weapons.

Vienna - Alcoholic gremlin and part of the troupe.

Aelyn - Born into a chaos worshipping cult, was raised and shaped to be the next leader, and decided to leave gender behind in the process. Tasked with keeping a metaphorical eye on the group.

Julius - Head of the Wings of Icarus and tasked with keeping an eye on the criminals as they fulfill their task.

Monty - Sadness masked with a blanket of waining hope and determination that barely helps keep him alive. Head doctor of a plague-ridden town.

El - Another witch and Monty's assistant. Tries to help with the plague problem.

Lucy - El's wife and assistant. Formerly a resident of an asylum before breaking out.

Darien - Part of the Chaos worshipping cult and believes that he should be the next coming of Chaos. Antagonist.

Lila - Eva's twin sister and everything she touches, dies. Antagonist.

Death Rattle is about work partners and roommates Roswell and Necro as they try to figure out why crime against the cryptalters is rising within the city. With Roswell as a cryptalter himself as he is a Reaper, and with Necro being a Witchblood-addicted woman who escaped from the commune of the People of the Occulum before she was to marry into the head family.

Characters:

Roswell - Reaper cryptalter and arguable main character. Very edgy and angry and it causes a lot of problems.

Necro - Roswell's partner and addicted to a drug called Witchblood, which gives her cryptalter-like powers.

Reaper - THE Grim Reaper and the one that started reapers as a cryptalter species.

Chapter Fourteen (You’ve married an Icarus. He has flown too close to the sun.)

No one’s POV:

Jacob sat in his hospital bed, wincing as the nurse cleaned his burns. His sister and niece walked into the room, sitting at the chairs adjacent to his bed. “Hello, Shari.”

“Hello.” Shari’s expression was cheerful as her daughter was busy scrolling through her phone. Jacob’s side of the family was down visiting him in the hospital since the fire. He had been showered with flowers and concerned cards. “It’s nothing I can’t handle.” He told his family, trying to soothe the ache in his heart since his now ex wife started the divorce proceedings. 

“Have you heard from McKenzie lately?” Shari’s daughter peeked up from her phone to ask. “She refuses to speak with me. She refuses to speak with anyone.” Jacob sighed as he stifled a groan of annoyance. Why is everyone so concerned about McKenzie all of the sudden? Jacob started playing Woodoku on his phone as his sister and niece left, their skin prickling with unease by Jacob’s sudden withdrawn mannerisms.

Jacob dozed off in his hospital bed. He didn’t expect to see the translucent form of his other ex wife in front of him. He knows a ghost when he sees one. He jolted back in his bed, stammering at the sight of her. “What do you want, Erin?”

“Kenz is in trouble.” Erin had a look of peace and solace on her face, something that Jacob had never seen at all in her life. “Why do you use her name that she calls herself?”

“Even after all this time, you still hold that image of them--”

“She is not a they!!!” Jacob snapped, standing up from his bed at once. He gritted his teeth as he thought back to the fire that scorched his multimilliondollar home. “So you actually visited her?”“They’ve matured a lot--”

“‘She’ is having a downwards spiral. That woke liberal mindset is rotting her brain.” Jacob grumbled with all the venom he could muster. Erin’s gaze was unwavering. “You were wrong about the triplets.” There was a wisdom in Erin’s voice as she guided her ex husband through a tangle of pines towards a shack in the Oregon woods. “What’s so special? This is just Stanley’s house.”

“Look closer.” Erin pointed to Atlas returning in his truck. Jacob’s eyes widened. The boy looked exactly like him except with green eyes, an ugly mullet, a fat belly, and with less scars from injuries. He wore flannel and looked like a discount country boy, but his painted nails sent a shiver down Jacob’s spine. “God dammit!!”

“What?”

“I can’t fucking escape these fucking queers. They’re turning my entire family against me.” Jacob turned his gaze towards a girl the same age as the boy with long bushy violet, red, and black dyed hair. She had long painted red fingernails and wore witchcore clothes. Jacob gagged at the sight of the bisexual pride pin on her dress. “Why? Why can’t any of my children be normal?”“Jacob. Your children need you. There’s something stalking---”“McKenzie brought this upon herself.” Jacob snapped, glaring at Erin. “I thought that if I could reach you beyond my death…” Erin looked at him with sorrow as she walked off into the woods. 

I don’t need those weirdos in my life. Jacob pouted and sulked back into his hospital bed, when suddenly, he was unable to move at all. He broke into a cold sweat, panic surging through his bones. Jacob’s eyes darted around the dark room, looking for a nurse to help him. The beeping of his heart rate monitor grew more frequent as he suddenly couldn’t breathe.

His burns felt like they were reignited. The scent of smoke filled his lungs. Huddled in front of him were the three shapes of his adult children, surrounded by a wall of fire. “No one’s here to save them now.”

Jacob bolted upright in his bed, panting and sweating. He was trembling from such a nightmare, but was too proud and stoic to admit that it scared him. He saw the translucent shape of the Axolotl in front of him, staring him down. “Like Icarus, you continue to flap away from your problems.”

“I don’t need your smart-assery.” Jacob growled as he saw the shapes of his three adult children in front of him once again. “What do you want from me? My wife left me. My ex haunts me from beyond her grave.”

“You must clip your wings and admit to what you have done.” Cryptic as ever, the Axolotl flared their gills. “I have done nothing wrong.”

But the Axolotl turned around and shook their head. They walked away in the silvery stars, leaving Jacob to wonder if it was all just a dream. Jacob shouted curses loud enough to draw the nurses attention. He stifled any mention of his dreams or visions, instead asking to call his father for a visit. 

Jacob’s father drove up to the hospital. He entered the room with his younger son. Jacob sighed, looking frazzled and troubled. “Are you going on any hunting trips to Oregon any time soon?”

Jacob’s father shook his head. “I know Hailey is taking Colt to Oregon later this week. They’re staying with Stanley.”

“WHY DOES EVERYONE WANT TO STAY WITH THAT FUCKING CROOK???!!!!” Jacob roared at the top of his lungs. “Wait, is McKenzie staying there?”

“She has an internship with the Pines.” Jacob elaborated to his little brother. “I’m sure she wants nothing to do with you when you arrive there.”

“Will she talk to Hailey?” Jacob’s brother asked hopefully. It had been clear that he had been taking Kenz’s distancing themself from their dad’s side of the family harsh to his heart. “Don’t expect her to make any sense. She’s been consumed by the woke liberal agenda. She wants to be known as ‘Kenz’ and by ‘they/them’ pronouns.” Jacob’s voice was full of scorn as his brother sighed and rolled his eyes, knowing well that Kenz was always more liberal leaning, especially in their teenage years. 

Jacob sighed as he looked at his brother pleadingly. “You think you can bring her back? See if you can get her to speak to me again?” Jacob’s brother was only sixteen, far too young to be roped into family drama. But he nodded and gave Jacob something he hadn’t had in a while, hope.

The Axolotl gave a heaving sigh as he shot a glance at Brodey. “So, Colt and Hailey are heading to Gravity Falls?”

“Against anyone’s better judgement, it would appear so.” The Axolotl turned towards the entrance to Heaven to conjure up a meeting with their angels and Hell’s sins. BRodey watched on as his mentor walked away. 

Something nagged at Brodey’s pelt as he remembered how temperamental Kenz would get around their cousin and uncle. He walked into the realm of dreams, finding the entrance point to Kenz’s delicate mindscape. He gave a heaving sigh, bracing himself for what he might find in there. 

Brodey walked through the threshold as Kenz wasn’t dreaming at the moment. They were asleep, but their mind was too racked with fever to hold a coherent thought. Brodey could sense another presence in the mindscape as he detected the scent of a cat. 

From behind him came a black she cat with leaf green eyes and stars in her pelt. Why is Hollyleaf here? Brodey tilted his head as he watched from the shadows of Kenz’s mind as Hollyleaf came to greet them. Kenz jolted in terror as they saw Hollyleaf. 

“Oh great. I’m dreaming of StarClan now?” Kenz buried their head in the pillows of the couch as Hollyleaf twitched her whiskers in amusement. She began with a prrowr of amusement. “Greetings Kenz.”

“Look, your Clan is out of control. Atlas had to go to CVS to get medicine. They keep raiding our herbs. Processed twoleg medicine is starting to no longer work on me.” Kenz’s voice was filled with hostility, something Brodey never expected to hear from someone who was always super happy and pleasant when they were around him. 

“I am here to deliver a message.” Hollyleaf put her amusement aside and started to get serious. “Oh the great and noble StarClan has chosen a message for me? Wouldn’t it be more useful to relay this to a medicine cat?” Kenz’s biting hostility and rage startled Brodey,w ho never thought Kenz could ever be capable of such wrath. 

Brodey twitched his ears with grief and sorrow. Kenz has been through a lot. Bill must be pulling some stunt in their mind to make them more bitey and mean. Or it’s just the sheer trauma of all the shit they’ve been through. Brodey gave a heaving sigh as Hollyleaf pricked her paw with her claw and let a drop of blood fall from her paw. The blood ignited into flame, first a small spark, escalating to a raging inferno. Kenz didn’t seem amused nor frightened of this revelation. The flames died down as Hollyleaf’s eyes lost their pupils and started to glow a bright minty green. “When blood meets fire, blood will burn.” 

Kenz scoffed at the notion. “Doesn’t all things burn when they meet fire?” Kenz turned away towards the couch cushions as Hollyleaf left the room. Kenz bristled with irritation as Brodey longed to comfort them.

Brodey sprang from the shadows, confusing the absolute shit out of Kenz. Kenz tilted their head. “Brodey?”

“In the spirit.” Brodey chuckled as Kenz scritched his ears. “Since you’re getting messages now--” “That I didn’t consent to.” Kenz grumbled as Brodey cleared his throat. “Anyways, kin you were once close to will find their way back into your life. A former traitor will burn from flapping too close to the sun, calling himself a hero. It will be up to you and your siblings to define his fate after his ashes are found.”

“Are all ghosts this cryptic?” Kenz growled, pacing back and forth, only to stumble a few steps. “We are as cryptic as we need to be to prevent the living from figuring out too much.”

“Lemme guess, the Axolotl sent you?” The hairs on Kenz’s neck started to stand up. Brodey can sense an incoming rant as he braced himself. Oh dear. 

“Lemme send something back to them. You gain the ability to write in your eternal servitude?” Kenz chucked Brodey a pen and paper as Brodey rolled his eyes and started to write. “The next time they want to spare a criminal to a ‘different form, a different time,’ they should consider that maybe not everyone deserves to be spared from the punishment of their crimes against the multiverse. Maybe some demons deserve to stay dead as a doornail. Maybe the next time they want to ‘try to see the better in someone’, they should strip them of their powers to groom feeble minds into shoving---”

“You’re about to get really explicit, aren’t you?” Brodey cut Kenz off before he subjected himself to the torture of one of Kenz’s frenzied rants. “What? You used to hear me out for the better in life. Why not let me speak my mind in death?”

“Don’t you have someone else to talk to about this?” Brodey didn’t want to hear Kenz’s graphic rant of all the things Bill did to them. “Like a therapist?”

“You think a therapist would specialize in pandimensional rape torture?” Kenz snapped, tensing up their body. Brodey hid his face in his paws in shame. How could the Axolotl just not do anything? What does he have left to lose? 

Brodey got an idea in that moment. Not an “Aha” idea, but more of an “ah shit, would this seriously work?” idea. Brodey sighed, deciding to hear Kenz out. “Continue.”

“You writing this down?”

“I am writing this down.” Brodey nodded, somehow writing down “Dear Axolotl” on the sheet of paper despite not having opposable thumbs. “Okay. Get this. The whole shitty thing about redemption is that it’s situational at best. At worst, it gets criminals off scott free without compensation of those hurt. Save redemption for petty thieves at the bottom of the capitalism ladder. But does a serial groomer who manipulates those through flattery, sex, and flirting deserve to be reincarnated or ever get a chance at release? Not to mention that he is breaking free. Eat this. If the Axolotl was so strong. If the Axolotl was so smart. If the Axolotl was so powerful, why didn’t they nip this little Bill problem in the bud before it got to this scale? Why didn’t they just say ‘no’ to the offer of Bill returning? What lessons do they think that Bill would learn from therapy?” Kenz paced back and forth.

“B-but what about your mother--”

“Leave her out of this!!!” Kenz bristled, snorting up mucus through their nose. They rapidly started pacing back and forth before collapsing. “Kenz, may I say something that I never got to tell you?”

“Maybe there’s a reason dogs shouldn’t speak.”

“Well you can speak to dogs regardless.” I debated with a piece of information that the Axolotl had told me when I first applied to be Kenz’s guardian angel. That seemed so long ago. I shouldn’t have died so soon. Kenz was right. I should have been able to follow them after they moved out. 

Brodey shook his head at the memory of him first arriving to heaven. St Peter immediately let him in as a winner, as he being a dog basically guaranteed him a spot in Heaven. But Brodey wasn’t satisfied with just relaxing in eternal paradise for the rest of his existence until his memory was gone from all living and dead memory. He knew that Kenz was fragile> He presumed that there was something going on in Kenz’s mind since they came home from the psych ward on their first stay. He could tell by the way they would scream and thrash in their sleep, by the way they would pace around back and forth in the yard talking to themself. He could tell by how they hardly had any friends when their sisters had plenty. Kenz always would set themself aside from everyone. 

Brodey applied for the guardian angel program, knowing that it was very rare for winners to become guardian angels. But the Axolotl took a liking to him. For one thing, being a dog won him several favors, and Kenz was such an integral part of the multiverse’s balance as a shapeshifter demon. 

Kenz never learned of their true species or who they are descended from. Shapeshifters are rare in nature, and their abilities are eventually bred out of the lineage. However, mutations can and do happen. 

Royals tend to be of shapeshifter demon descent. It just happens. However, royals could never change forms. Instead, they were heavily deformed from the inbreeding of faulty incomplete shapeshifter genes. Eventually, the perils of inbreeding were known and royals started to outsource. 

Why was this important? Kenz was a descendant of a Scottish king. The Scottish king had the shapeshifting gene, and was fabled to have changed forms frequently himself. However, these genes were dormant unless two copies were passed down, one from each parent. And it just so happened the other copy of the gene was on their father’s side.

Jacob’s great grandfather was half shapeshifter, so the genes were more recent and strong. That shapeshifter was a descendent of an extremely high ranking hellborn royal, quite possibly Satan himself or a Goetia. But with a lack of records and how demon genes are hard to test for, any connections to any royal hellborne demon on Kenz’s lineage would be too far gone to track, the only evidence of such is how Kenz, Holly, and Atlas can wield magic. 

Brodey opened his mouth to speak through Kenz’s fervent rants, but it was clear that Kenz was making less and less sense in their feverish haze and they were wearing themself out. They collapsed onto the ground, leaning on Brodey. With a heave of their sides and a cough, they gazed at Brodey. “I’m getting fuuuuckinng tiireed…” With a final whimper, they fell asleep as Brodey realized he was trapped in Kenz’s mindscape until they woke up. I hope Atlas comes back with the medicine soon.
