okay. i havent shut up about the greek myth aspects of Simon's story and i wont stop now. At first it was a statue of Persephone in the garden, with it's head replaced to be Betty, giving the implication that Betty is the Persephone to Simon's Hades, and it was Simon's status as an antiquarian. and now we've gotten Simon being a huge nerd and bringing up Theseus completely unprompted (so real)

a bit of context in case you need it, Theseus was one of those greek "legendary Heroes" (Achilles, Heracles, etc.), and previously King of Athens, but had managed to dodge most bad things that happen to Greek heroes. he was just stupid and i guess they took pity on him.

The Ship of Theseus or "Theseus' Paradox", which I'd imagine all of tumblr knows by now, but if you don't, is the question on whether if a ship, specifically Theseus', is still the same ship after having all of its parts replaced exactly. To me this makes for such an obvious connection to Simon. Simon's story factors around identity, first and foremost. (yknow. "I Remember You" and all that?) The concept of not knowing what you are fundamentally was originally Ice King's thing, as his previous life as Simon was essentially history. But now that's being brought to Simon. and Simon has the lucidity to process what that means for him.

But, do you think any of them before him felt that way too?

I mean it sounds kind of miserable, being raised your whole life to be solely relied on for one moment… and then what? How do you handle the sudden shift to ‘not being needed anymore’? Evidently, most of them didn’t have very much happen to them after the events of their games since we don’t get to know—

But, do you think any of them ever got better? Do you think anyone before Richter ever learned how to live for themselves? Did Richter?

I feel like the only thing that’s preventing me from falling into complete despair surrounding Simon’s fate in the next two episodes is something Very Important that happened alllll the way back in the adventure time finale. And that’s Betty’s wish “however it has to happen. I wish for the power to keep Simon safe!” Now keeping him safe could mean a lot of things, like physically saving him from harm, or preventing him from doing something reckless like trying to wear the crown on purpose, something that was the catalyst to ruining both Simon’s and Betty’s lives and relationship.

I’m really hoping the series goes this route, cause than it could give Simon some much needed plot armor. And I highly think that after all that has happened, Simon is just gonna die by the hands of a red hot headed space roach.

there is a before and after, when it comes to knowing simon.

before, when you were young and carefree and loving him was the sun on your face, its light red behind your eyelids. easy, comforting, done without thought. sweethearts, you could have been; how many nights did you fall to sleep to the thought of him and all that you would one day have? a future, a family, a house and accompanying picket fence?

worst case scenario, you knew he would be different after he left. all the horror stories you'd ever heard about the military and what was awaiting him overseas, what he'd bring back with him. but — you knew him very well, simon riley, and he would be there at the very core, surely. shrouded, maybe, but you would find him. you would search, for him.

ghost is after. not yet, not technically, but to you he's no longer simon. that faraway look, when things you'll never come to know swim in the pit of his dark eyes, when he stares through you and yet can't bring himself to meet your gaze. love is not what you knew; instead it is the cold water from the shower, the chill it sends down your spine as you lean against his, curving into him as if your warmth could be enough for the both of you.

each time he returns, it's a little more drawn out of him. less room for you, taken up by ugly little things you don't stand a chance against. you reach for all that you can of him, for as long as he'll let you — but there comes a time when he, ghost, pushes you away, finally, and, maybe simon is still in there, shrouded, but he doesn't want to be found.
