I've been catching up on The Dragon Prince and GOD. The beginning of season 6 didn't pull any punches did it??? Viren doing a complete U-Turn at the end of 5 and forsaking all dark magic and walking off into the woods to die, only to wake up in 6 alive because Claudia slaughtered and sacrificed the bug elf kid to save him, prompting him to march off to Katolis to turn himself in while his daughter sinks into despair because everyone has left her but Terry, but she's done so much wrong and she's done horrible things, and Rayla cut off her fucking leg, so she pushes Terry away so that he won't leave her first, but he WAITS for her and she comes back and he helps her because he loves her and im-- *gets shot*

Worst of all, this is the main culprit of why so many audiences in so many fandoms get so many characters, fuck, so many WHOLE NARRATIVES and metaphors so, so fucking WRONG.

Filler episodes allow us to know our cast. To establish how they interact with each other, as well as their virtues and flaws. More importantly, they allow the serious moments to have more gravitas. Because now you are empathizing with the characters that are going through it. You want them to survive them, because now you know how they live they day-to-day.

I'm sure we all know all those stupid memes talking about "Character Development" that really are talking about disgraces that occurs to ome character, from losing a battle to having another character dying. Well, that poor understanding of what Character Development is can be directly attributed to how many times filler episodes are ignored, and, in some point, considered non-canon by the fandom. After all, without filler episodes being a breath between tense moments, how you just make the seriousness of a situation feel bigger? adding more brutally grandiose moments, of course!

genuinely one of the worst things that’s happened to television in the last few years (exacerbated by streaming services) is death of Filler. going from 20 episodes to 8 because “we didn’t really need that episode where the main characters went to the beach right? it had no long lasting effect” but we DID!!! we needed to see how they act without the Big Bad Plot and to establish the dynamics between the characters and lay in the sun (do they forget sunscreen? how do they react to a thieving seagull? do they get buried in the sand or do they do the burying?). the plot isn’t everything. the action doesn’t hit as hard without the quiet moments. give us character development and our little scenes back

people keep comparing the WatcherTV move to Dropout (for obvious reasons) but I cannot emphasize enough how vastly different the circumstances between the companies is. like astronomically different

• Watcher does not have the years of experience that Dropout/CollegeHumor did. CH as a company formed in 1999. They've been doing sketch comedy since the early 2000s. they were a company, like an actual company with offices and departments and everything. Watcher hasn't even existed for 5 years

• Because CH has been established for that long, not only do they have an established connection to the industry, but they have an established fan base already. People that knew about and were fans of CH for over a decade, before Dropout was even a thought in someone's head.

• When Dropout was in its infancy, CH was still under their parent company IAC, they weren't roughing it completely on their own the way that Watcher is. They were later dropped by IAC, but having that connection and funding in the vulnerable start was important

• CH was still posting sketches and skits on YouTube for free while filling out Dropout's catalog. They didn't hard shift into exclusively subscription based, they continued doing both for the first couple years in order to help get Dropout established. Even now, they still occasionally post full episodes for free on YouTube, including whole seasons of Dimension 20

• They have a large rotating cast that they move between multiple shows. They have a variety of content and a variety of entertainers to be guests on shows. Watcher has 3 guys which the occasional guest

• A big part of this transition is because Watcher's episodes have a high production cost. That's what they claim. That it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to film one episode of Ghost Files. but why?? why does it cost that much?? I get cost of travel for talent and crew but hundreds of thousands of dollars per episode?

• When IAC dropped CH and they went bankrupt in 2020, they only had 7 employees. When Sam Reich bought the company, they only had 7 employees. not twenty five. I'm not advocating for laying off people, but maybe they shouldn't be payrolling more people than they can afford

• also. Sam Reich is very vocal about how Dropout surviving and succeeding was nothing short of a miracle. They didn't get that success because the business model works, they got that success from years of networking, hard work, and pure luck

ClassofO7 really had a chance to do something interesting in terms of romantic pairings with so many complex f/f relationships to explore if they didn’t want to forego having a “main slow-burn ship” with an all-female cast (Zoe/Amelia obviousy but also Genevieve/Saskia and even Phoebe/Renee) and yet they went with the laziest option possible in terms of representayshun by making the one lesbian character the comic relief side character whom it’s clear they never had any intention of giving a romantic storyline to

got back from my work dinner in time to squeeze in the latest andor episode after all!!!!! before I need to go to bed to get up at six am for the fourth day in a row because life is terrible

anyway, many thoughts as always but just!!!!!!!!!! i'm so happy with this show, it's so fucking good! like I had high expectations that I thought could never be met because rogue one is my favourite star wars movie and yet the show surpassed them all! just gosh, the writing, the music, the acting, the cinematography, the political commentary, and the way they tie it all together in the end (like the way the bits and pieces of music that were playing during the title card arranged themselves into the funeral song in the final episode??? INSANE!)!!! also the post-credit scene :)))))))) so in love with this show, can't wait to be back home and spend the entire sunday afternoon just spamming andor content^^
