The Contractor. Silence can never be bought, only rented (pt. 6 of 6)
4k / dbf!Joel x f!Reader / pt 1 / master list
STORY MASTER LIST
Warnings/Notes: I8+ some angst, dry (wet?) humping, unsafe PIV SEX (!), legal age gap. Acronyms - RICO is about organized crime. barely edited.
It’s so close. It’s finally here. His hand slides under your shirt, runs over your back then pulls you closer. He feels so good, it’s like a dream. But the more you wake up, the more your thoughts creep in. You want the truth. You pry your lips away from his, and right away, he latches onto your neck. “What did my Dad want?” you ask. Between kisses, he murmurs, “don’t worry about it.”
Joel shows you his phone and your dad is at the gate. He thinks in silence for a moment.
“Well, we’re not doing anything,” you offer, but your heart is pounding. “Don’t let him in.”
“I’ve gotta let him in. What’s he gonna think if I don’t?”
He rubs his beard and opens his home automation app. “You’re in the pool house,” he decides. He turns on a dim light in the pool house.
“What does he want?” you ask.
“Hell if I know. Go through the basement.”
“No way.”
“Come on, Trouble.”
“I’m not going through the tunnel alone.”
He seems endeared by your fear. “Do it for us,” he says with a wink that makes your heart jump. Then he gets up to take the drinks to the sink.
“Wait,” you say.
He freezes.
“What were you gonna say? Now that I know . . . ?”
“Now that you know, I don’t have to worry about you finding out later and being mad.”
You kind of doubt that’s what he was going to say. “I’m mad anyway,” you say.
“Figured. It’s okay.”
A car door opens and closes.
“Go,” he whispers. “I’ll come get you when he’s gone.”
You make it to the pantry stairs just in time.
-
When your dad comes in, Joel says, “Welcome back.”
Your dad asks, “Where’s my girl?”
“Sleepin’ it off in the pool house, I reckon. Didn’t want her to drive.”
There’s a long pause and your heart races.
Your dad says, “Good, good. . .thanks.”
Damn, Joel is smooth. He asks your dad, “Somethin’ you didn’t wanna call about?”
“Yeah. . .”
You’re tempted to stay and hear more, but you’re also afraid of what you might hear. You creep down the stairs quietly. You think about going to the theater instead and waiting in one of those recliners. It’s silly, but you really don’t want to go underground to the pool house. The tunnel is climate controlled and has automatic lights, but it’s still spooky without windows.
-
You’re standing near the tunnel entrance trying to work up your nerve when you hear raised voices, and now you can’t resist. You quietly make your way back toward the stairs to listen. If no one is going to tell you what’s going on, this is your chance to find out. It occurs to you there’s no reason for you to go all the way to the pool house except that Joel doesn't want you to hear this. Otherwise, you could have hidden anywhere and your dad would be none the wiser.
A cabinet slams shut and Joel demands, “How many aren’t you tellin’ me about?”
“Not tellin’ you? I just found out! I’m not in charge, you know that.” Glasses clink with ice.
“North of the fuckin’ border again. God damnit,” Joel says. He’s even more heated than he was in the car the other day.
Your dad asks, “What do I have to do to get you all in on this? Let’s get it done and be done with it.”
“You know what I want. I want out.”
“You’ll be out.”
“I want it in writing.”
Your dad scoffs. “You want a paper trail now? When the whole point was to keep your charges off paper?”
“Not the charges, damnit.”
“Then what do you want in writing? You made some bad guys go away in exchange for evidence going away, now we’re square?”
“It was supposed to be a six month contract. Here we are, how many renewals later? And I’m still consulting.” You can picture the air quotes with the way he says it.
“Still better than 20 years for RICO,” your dad says.
“Never woulda gotten the max. . . You know what? At least the wiseguys have a code.”
Your dad sharpens his tone. “Ever wonder what happened to that evidence?”
“FUCK” A glass shatters. “I’m never gettin’ out. Just say it.”
“This is the last-”
“Don’t string me along with this one last job bullshit, then the job’s a whole fuckin’ cartel. Call it what it is. I’m an asset. Not a contractor if I don’t got a fuckin’ choice.”
“You’re gonna be out.”
“You won’t even give me your word.”
“Joel, you have my word.”
“Alright,” Joel calms down a little. “And what about you? You ever think about your daughter in all this? You want her on tiktok seein’ your head roll off one day ‘cause you couldn’t take the loss and retire?”
“Don’t talk about my daughter.”
There’s a moment of silence, then your dad continues.
“We’re on the same team, buddy. I want this over as bad as you do. C’mon, let’s look at the intel.”
You’re sick to your stomach. Whatever this is sounds like it’s about your dad’s ego. What’s new. You shrink back to the tunnel and jog through it so it’s over fast.
-
You’re laying on the couch in the pool house, and you don’t even want to think about what you just heard. So you’re replaying the earlier conversation in your head. The one about your stepmother and . . . gross. Something doesn’t sit right about it. You’re trying to figure out why Joel would have felt guilty for you blackmailing him into sex.
It hits you that the only reason he’d feel guilty is if it were his doing. . . If he realized you thought you had leverage and saw an opportunity. Deprive you, make you want it that bad, see if you’d try to twist his arm into it. And once you got there, game over? Was he just getting off on having the power all along? Then you ask yourself the real question. If that’s the case . . . do you wish none of it ever happened? It’s an easy no.
So you put that to rest and can’t help but think about what you overheard between Joel and your dad. You want to know how this all happened, but from the way Joel was talking about heads rolling off, you’re most worried about what he and your dad are up to right now. You want to hear it from Joel. You want to know what his real job is. The truth might be the only thing you want more than to fuck him. And if he won’t tell you the truth, maybe he doesn’t deserve the latter.
You’re exhausted from being in the sun all day. There’s a big, heavy blanket – silky, not exactly cozy. It’s like a rich guy blanket, probably put there by an interior decorator. You curl up on the oversized couch and pull it over you. There’s a bedroom, but you don’t expect this to take as long as it does, so you don’t get in bed. You stay on the couch. It feels like Joel is taking forever, but you’re too tired to even look at the time. You take off your shorts and bra, swaddle yourself in the blanket, and drift off.
-
You don’t hear Joel come in or take off his pants or put his stuff on the table. You feel cold for a moment when he lifts the blanket, but then he gets under it with you and takes you into his arms, and he’s warm.
You stir, and Joel whispers, “You wanna get in bed?”
You shake your head no.
“It’s right there . . .”
“No,” you manage weakly. You’re not remembering any of the drama at the moment, just enjoying being in his arms and too sleepy to move.
“Ok,” he whispers, and kisses you on the head. You fall back asleep with your head in the crook of his neck.
. . .
In the middle of the night, you wake up in his arms with one of his legs hooked over both of yours and his boxers pressed against your panties, which are soaked with arousal, you can feel it. He’s only somewhat hard, but it’s enough to make you need it, bad. He smells freshly showered but you can still catch a hint of his sweat, which makes you need it worse. Your nose brushes his beard as you look up at his face.
He blinks awake with sleepy eyes. He presses his lips into yours for a long kiss that starts light, affectionate, closed-mouth, then becomes desperate, invasive. You accept his tongue greedily. He hardens right against your crotch. His hips roll into yours, and before long, he’s rock hard, and you softly moan “mmm” into his mouth.
He whispers, “Are you on-”
“Yeah,” you cut him off. Then he covers your mouth with his lips again. Yeah, you’re on birth control, and the question makes you throb as he kisses you. It’s so close. It’s finally here. It’s grinding into you right now. His hand slides under your shirt and runs over your bare back, pulling you closer against him, and he moans softly. He feels so good, it’s like a dream.
But the more you wake up, the more your thoughts creep in. You really, really want the truth. It dawns on you this might be your best shot at getting it.
You pry your lips away from his, and right away he latches onto your neck.
“What did my Dad want?” you ask him.
Between kisses on your neck, he murmurs, “don’t worry about it.”
“Tell me what’s going on,” you demand.
He rolls his arousal into your clit and you bite your lip to suppress a moan while you wait for his answer.
“Not now, sugar. . .”
He lifts your shirt swiftly but smoothly and palms a breast, then is hard-on drags down your thigh and you feel a damp spot on his boxers. He takes your nipple into his mouth while he pulls your shirt off, and you help him, despite your reservations. You need the truth, but you’re aching. Your body needs to be filled by his.
“Not now. . . so, when?” you ask.
“When I’m back,” he sighs.
“Back from what?”
He doesn’t answer. He lightly drags his lips over the top curve of your breast, over your shoulder, up your throat, your jaw, to your ear.
-
His boxers find your drenched panties again and press against you in just the right place. He’s so stiff, it takes your breath away, and a soft moan falls out of your mouth. He whispers, “This is all that matters,” and you want him to be right so bad. He nibbles then sucks your neck right under your ear. He grinds his rock-hard member into you in a slow rhythm at just the right angle.
“This,” he says, looking from your eyes to your mouth and back. He wraps his arms around you, grinding into you rhythmically. He kisses you again, and his tongue erases whatever words were on yours. Blood rushes to your lips with the gentle suction of his own. With his face still on yours, he slowly, carefully takes his boxers off under the blanket.
You slide your hand down his abdomen and your breath hitches as you graze the light padding of his lower stomach. You find that small, circular scar and gently caress it. He flinches, then moves your hand to his cock. It sends a bolt of need to your aching clit, but you still have to ask.
“What’s it from?”
“C’mere,” he says, and latches onto your mouth again as he thrusts into your hand.
You want his lips on yours forever. You want nothing more than to just give in and fuck him. You push yourself up with your arm and he rolls onto his back. You shrug off the blanket. He watches you in a trance as you straddle him with his cock still in your hand. You thumb his scar again and he says, “you know I served.” Right. Of course.
His stomach rises and falls, and his head tilts slightly as he watches you nestle his naked cock at your drenched, silky underwear, right against your clit. You roll your hips into him and moan at the friction.
“Let’s lose these, sugar,” he pants. He hooks his fingers into your underwear and you lift each leg to slowly slip out of them.
-
You settle back in, then close your eyes, tilt your hips, and use him to pleasure yourself. You drag along his cock, from your clit to your dripping entrance and back, making his manhood shine with you, and he groans. Then you lay your hips onto his again and his hips rock against you, with his unfathomably hard cock gliding firmly against your slick.
He moans and breathes heavily. “I gotta be inside you, sugar,“ he says as he grinds into you rhythmically.
“I’ve gotta know the truth,” you reply, but it physically pains you.
He groans. “Fuck,” he pants. “What do you wanna know?”
“What you’re up to,” you say as you use your hips to massage yourself with his stiff manhood.
He takes a deep breath. “It’s complicated,” he says, and you inwardly acknowledge he’s probably right. You stop moving and start to back yourself down his thighs. You bend at the hip and hover over his cock.
“Are you still in construction?” You stroke him slowly.
“Still own the business.” He adjusts his hips under you.
“But that’s not all you do.” You bring it almost to your mouth and take a deep whiff of his musk which makes you twitch with need.
“No,” he quietly admits.
You think about how to simplify this and get it over with. You throw caution to the wind and ask, “Do you kill people?” You thumb the precum beading at his tip. No immediate answer. Then, you take his salty tip into your mouth for just a kiss and he groans. You take it out.
He sighs. “You really wanna know?” He thrusts into your hand.
You give it another kiss. “Yeah.”
You slowly crawl back up his body and lay half on him and he rolls toward you so you’re on your side like before. You hook your top leg over him. You search his eyes for an answer, but he looks down at your bodies instead. His large hand engulfs your ass cheek, caresses it with his palm, then gives it a firm squeeze and pulls you hard against him, and your wet pussy meets his stiff cock again.
“What do you think?” He asks quietly, then buries his nose in your neck and whispers, “Cause you’re prolly right.” Your heart skips a beat. You wanted more, but at the same time, it feels like he just told you everything he has to tell - or that’s what you’re trying to believe, for your body’s sake. You don’t feel anything about what he just said. All you feel is him, and that’s all you want.
-
He groans as he grinds into you, and his neck vein bulges. He rolls his arousal harder against your slick seam and kisses your neck. “Come on, sugar,” he says.
You open your mouth but don’t have any words, you can only breathe. He ruts against you again and you close your eyes with a moan. You’re throbbing, physically aching, swollen with need, dying to have him.
“Gotta be inside you now baby,” Joel repeats, smooth and low. He thrusts hard against your clit, slow, but so hard. His mouth devours yours, and your nipples harden against his broad chest. When his stiff member drags back down your clit, he hesitates at your entrance, then puts his hand on your ass, and the tip of his cock is caught by a tilt of your hips. Tension swells and tightens deep within you.
He begins to slowly push the firm head of his cock into your tight, wet hole and reads your face. You have to remind yourself to breathe. Your brow furrows. You bite your lip and inhale through your nose. You both adjust your hips so the angle is just right. He pushes a little more, and the stretch of his girth makes your whole body dizzy and desperate for more. He pauses and you just barely nod.
The arm under you pulls you closer with his hand flat on your back while his other hand braces on your leg that’s hooked over him. Then he pushes his stiff length into you with a grunt that becomes a loud sigh, and you gasp as his thick cock makes room for itself inside you. He pauses when he’s mostly in, and you look into each other’s eyes.
“Now fuck me,” you whisper.
“Yes ma’am,” he growls. He backs out all but the tip, then plunges into you completely. Your mouth falls open with a moan as your bodies are finally joined and he bottoms out with a shudder.
His lips latch onto yours as he retreats, then slams into you again with a grunt. He buries himself in you, slow and hard, each time somehow better than the last. Your hips roll into him, and together, you gradually up the tempo. You kiss sloppily, half your mouths breathing heavily and vocalizing against each other’s cheek. Each exhale is a moan.
His hips roll fluidly against yours and his whole body tells you how bad he’s been wanting this. Every time he fills you up, you could cry from how good it feels. He opens his mouth wide and puts it on your neck again, gently sucking your delicate skin into his mouth. He grabs hold of your ass and uses the arm under you to gently put you on your back without fully pulling out. Your legs wrap around him and he sheathes himself entirely once again.
You hook your fingers under the bottom hem of his t-shirt and pull it over his head. He takes in the view of your whole body again before he leans back down.
“You look so goddamn hot,” he says, looking down at you, thrusting into you. He looks hot, too.
The moonlight reveals a faint farmer’s tan from the barbecue. His pecs and triceps are pumped up and flexing as he moves in rhythm. His hair is messy and perfect. The silver bits of his beard glisten.
He leaves space between you and reaches down to thumb your clit, almost putting you over the edge, but you quickly take his hand and pull his body back into yours.
“About to come?” he asks. You nod and take a deep breath. He thrusts into you hard then slowly rocks his hips deep inside you with his neatly trimmed hair grinding into your clit. The tension bursts inside you and you groan his name as a massive wave of pleasure overwhelms you. Then another. You clench around him and your body jerks erratically. Your nipples go almost painfully hard and drag against him.
He pushes deeper than you thought possible, balls tightening against your ass, and you gasp and moan. Then he grunts, pulses inside you, and his whole body shudders as you milk his cock. You keep pulsing as he fills you up with his seed. Your whole body is drunk with him. When you’re both finished coming, he looks at you, and himself, then you again as he catches his breath. He strokes your face and says, “god damn.”
You almost forget you’re two different bodies until he slides out of you, leaving a void your insides try to fill. He lays on his side and takes you in his arms again.
-
He looks so peaceful. At the moment, you don’t care if you still don't know what’s going on. You don’t even care if he manipulated you into wanting this so desperately. All you care about is whether this is going to happen again, and you’re terrified of finding out it’s not. You start to worry about him going to do this job.
After a long silence, you say, “You don’t wanna do it, do you?”
“Do what?”
“Whatever you have to go and do.”
The peace evaporates from his face. He sighs. “No. . . No, I don’t, sugar.” He rubs his temples with the thumb and pinky of one massive hand.
“Then why do it?”
“No choice,” he says.
“That’s messed up,” you say. “I mean, not having a choice.”
“Yeah, well, it was my own dumb ass. Thought I was gettin’ outta somethin’ worse. Didn’t know what I was gettin’ into.”
“How do you get out of it now?”
“Finish the job, call it a day, see what happens.”
“Really?”
“It’s been a long time comin’.”
A couple seconds after he says it, a little smile tugs at the corner of his mouth. He doesn’t have to make the joke out loud. You playfully pinch his cheek.
“Worth the wait?” he asks with a smirk.
You shrug, and he says, “I’ll take it.” You can feel your whole face and body glowing. You don’t need to spell it out.
-
You get pensive thinking about why now, why tonight. “You weren’t just pissed at my dad, were you?”
He chuckles, then almost seems to panic when he sees you’re serious. “God, no, Trouble. . . “ His heart rate visibly quickens on his neck. He didn’t even have to ask you what you meant. He wraps his arms tight around you and kisses your head.
“So whatever happened to ‘not tonight’?” you ask.
“Couldn’t help it,” he says. “Neither could you.” Well, that’s true. “Plus, now I don't have to worry ‘bout you findin’ out you didn’t blackmail me. That woulda broken your sick little heart.”
“Maybe,” you say, still a little paranoid, but you push the thoughts away.
“I don’t think your dad needs to know about this,” he says. “That woulda been a sick serve though if I was mad at him,” he chuckles.
“Did you just say sick serve. . . “
“Sick serve,” he whispers in your ear.
“I don’t think that means what you– where do you pick this stuff up, anyway?”
“Prolly Jesse, he never shuts up.”
“So, Jesse’s-”
Joel puts his thumb on your lips. “Said too much already,” he says. “ You gotta keep it to yourself, okay?” You give his thumb a little bite before he takes it away.
It’s funny, you never had anything over him before, but now you kinda do. Not that you’ll do anything with it. Too dangerous.
“Yeah,” you say.
After a long silence, you ask, “What are you gonna do when it’s over?”
He sighs and adjusts his arms around you. “This right here,” he says. “If you want.”
You fall asleep in his arms again.
-
When you wake up, he’s gone. It’s light outside. Birds are chirping. You have a text from him that says “Stay here if you want. Back in a couple days.” You don’t stay there. It’s too creepy without him. You go back to your apartment, but you worry about him a lot and check your phone constantly. A few days later, you get off work, and when you walk out of the bookstore, he’s parked there, leaning against his truck, ankles crossed, wearing Ray Bans and a t-shirt, jeans as tight as ever, arms tucked under his massive biceps.
“Here comes trouble” he says as he pushes himself off his truck. He puts his hands on his hips and lets his pants adjust as he pops out one knee.
Your lips meet as he wraps his arms around you.
“All done?” you ask.
“Let’s celebrate,” he says. “Got that same suite on the river. Booked it for the rest of the month, so I reckon I’ll be around.”
-
Thank you for reading and engaging with this story for all six parts, y'all have been so awesome!
FWIW I see this as a happy ending with ominous undertones lol. I think I will come back to these two in the future (assuming there's still interest now that they've fucked). That's why I didn't blow my whole load in over explaining the subplot in this part. I initially included the sub plot so there would be an interesting basis to come back to them after the main story.
I just started another (darker) dad's best friend story: Left in Lincoln. In addition to smut it's also slow burn horror but no gore. Heed warnings. . .

Alternate: Jason todd x fem!reader
summary: I love you in every multiverse.
***
“I wish I've met you earlier…..”
She frowned.
As sweet as that sentence sounded, she could tell there was a hidden meaning to it. Something indefinable, not conveyable with words. Something only someone close to Jason would recognize.
It was a Saturday morning after a intense Friday night. There was no obligation to go anywhere, to do anything, to rush through the task list and Jason and Y/N were laying in bed, tangled in the sheets, their bodies so close together and yet not close enough, simply enjoying each other’s presence and warmth coming from the intimacy. The sounds of rain drops thumping out on the window sill added to the atmosphere of the incoming lazy day as Y/N snuggled closer to Jason, making sure he wouldn’t run away from her.
He was still learning how to be calm and at peace like this.
Barely a second ago, her head was laying on his chest, her fingers tracing patterns on his skin, softly, slowly in the most loving and caring gesture she could produce, almost as if she was trying to tell him to stay, without using her voice. One of his arms were wrapped around her waist, caressing the small of her back making her hum softly in contentment, the other tangled in her hair.
It was so perfect.
And then he said those six words.
“Jay?” she asked a bit confused why he came up with something like that out of the blue. “Is everything ok, baby?” Y/N raised her head wriggling out of his embrace, searching for his eyes, her voice and gaze concerned at the sudden confession.
He knew better than to look at her, instead keeping his eyes focused on the ceiling, hands behind his head now, still laying on his back on the bed, not budging even a little. He knew that the second their gazes met he would break. And he hated being vulnerable.
Yes, he loved her.
Yes, he felt safe with his emotions while being with her.
Yes, he trusted her.
But.
He was an emotional one and pouring his heart out to someone, anyone was still hard.
So he stayed silent, afraid of as much as the possibility of being too much.
“Jason.” She said, her voice more serious now, but he was deaf to her calling. “Jason!”
“Yes, princess?” he asked casually
“Come on! You can’t just drop a sentence like that and go silent on me….”she cooed cupping his face and forcing him to look at her. “baby…..” she caressed his cheek and leaned forwards brush her nose over his. “talk to me, please…..”
“It’s nothing.”
She sighed. God, he could be so stubborn at times.
“Jace…. I love you…. It doesn’t matter that we haven’t met ten years later. Or five…. You hear me? it doesn’t matter…. I love you…. You have all of my affection now and….”
“I could have loved you for so much longer…..” he whispered chiming in and closing his eyes.
“What…..?” her heart hammered in her chest, the slightest blush creeping on her face. Out of every romantic and sweet things he ever said, out of all the poems and sentences he quoted to her this little one might have been the most intimate one. It was a suggestion that what they had was something more than a fling. And even though she knew that, hearing something like that coming from him brought tears of happiness into her eyes.
“Y/N? Oh God…. I’m so sorry, baby….” He changed position, sitting up to hug her to his chest immediately “I’m so sorry, please don’t cry, I didn’t mean to hurt you…..” he started babbling kissing the top of her head repeatedly, holding her tighter. “I just wish I knew you before so I could save you from all the things that happened in your past…. Self doubts, pain, hurt, fear…. I wish I could have been your shield, protecting you from any harm…..You didn’t deserve a single trauma that happened in your life…. And I’m sorry I wasn’t there baby….”
“You know….” she pulled back slightly “all those details you mentioned… all that trauma… it led me to you…. It led me to the only person I know my heart is safe with….. It’s like I loved you before even knowing you….? Does that make sense?
“It does to me.” He smiled softly, wiping her tears “cause I think I feel the same. Hey, I am not good with all that space and time concepts, but do you think we might have met before?”
“Are you asking me if I believe in reincarnation of souls?”
“Do you?”
“Not until now…..” she whispered “I know it may sound stupid, but ….. do you think there is a alternate reality, somewhere, where we haven’t met? Cause I don’t think I could ever be without you…..”
“Baby…..” he smiled brushing hair out of her forehead and kissing her temple, pulling her closer to him, rocking gently back and forth. “Such verse is pretty much impossible.”
“Why?”
“Because I love you in every multiverse…..” he smiles leaning his forehead on her.
And it was perfect.......

Dumb plan part two!!
Warnings:spice (no smut), cursing, drinking
(Requests are open and I would love any critiques!)
(Loosely based off @gladerscake incorrect tmr quote, go follow her she writes very well! Also I’ve been meaning to get this done for days now but I just keep getting distracted so here you go I finally pushed through)
It had been two weeks since you and Gally started “dating”.
Two weeks since you two kissed.
Neither one of you had talked about it since, and neither of you had made the move to kiss again. Like the plan, you had both stopped showing a bunch PDA once other Gladers noticed.
It was getting to be too much for you. At night you lay awake, not being able to get it out of your head.
During the day you were constantly distracted at your job as a track-hoe.
It’s just a kiss, pull yourself together y/n.
“Y/n? Hello? Earth to y/n!” Newts voice pulled you out of your thoughts.
“Sorry, I’m just not feeling all that great today Newt.”
“I’ll tell you what, I’ll give you the rest of the day to rest, so you can be ready for the bonfire tonight. You’ve been kind of off lately.” His tone grows to one of concern, and he looked at you with his brow furrowed.
“Oh it’s nothing, I’m just tired.”
“Okay… just rest up so we can let loose and have fun tonight.” He looks at you with a warm smile, Newt has always been like a brother to you, and you can count on him to take care of you.
For a second you think about telling him everything going on in your mind, but you didn’t want to sound ungrateful. It was partly his plan after all.
“Thanks Newt” with a hug, you head to your hut. You had your own hut because Gally didn’t think it would be safe for the only girl to be sleeping around a bunch of boys with nothing to protect her but a hammock.
Gally. He’s been one of the few people that you’ve trusted ever since you’d come to the Glade, about two months after he did. You didn’t get really close for about 3 months, but even from the beginning you had a little crush on him. Over time it grew and grew, along with your friendship.
I mean how could you not like Gally?
He’s strong, handsome, and damn those arms, but he’s also a very caring and respectful guy. He’s passionate when it comes to the things he cares about, and puts effort into the things that he loves.
Not looking where you were going and being lost in your thoughts, you all of the sudden run into someone. Feeling yourself start to fall backwards, and wi the a yelp, you desperately try to grab something to stop your fall. You accidentally grab their shirt and you pull them down with you, and unfortunately, on top of you.
Great, just great.
“Woah, you good there?” An unfamiliar voice asks you. You look up to see a Glader that you don’t recognize.
“Oh yeah I’m sorry, it’s been a long day and I wasn’t really paying attention.” You sigh, it really had been a long day.
“Wanna get off of my girlfriend now?”
“Oh uh Gally! I didn’t see you there how was- i mean how- how are you?” The glader looked anywhere but at you as Gally shot daggers at him with his eyes.
“Oh me? I’m great it’s just a little maddening to see a guy sitting on top of my girlfriend you know. Kind of puts a damper on my mood.” Gally gets closer and closer to Glader, now staring down at him.
“Gally it’s not what you think—“ Gally shoots you a glare and you shut up real quick.
“Anyways I’m gonna… go now?”
As the glader disappeared into the distance, Gally turned to you with a look on his face that could kill.
“Y/n,” he started to walk towards you.
“There’s no point in this-us- if you’re in the Deadheads messing around with some random Glader.” He continues to move closer to you, and you slowly start to back up.
“I know that, believe me, I just ran into him and fell and-really it’s not what you think it was, it was nothing.”
“Really? You seemed in no hurry to get him off of you.” You feel your back hits something solid, a tree maybe?
Gally puts his hands on either side of your head, and leans in, maintaining eye contact.
Red flushes to your face and you quickly look down.
“Y/n- look at me.” You look up at Gally meets your gaze. For a moment you two just stare, and he searches your face for something thing. Slowly he moves forward, barely an inch-but then he pulls away and walks off. You stare at him as he just walks away, a puzzled expression on your face.
What the hell? What was that about? He seemed so…jealous? But we’re not actually dating?
Whatever- you were just gonna go back to your hut so you could let loose at the bonfire and not have to deal with any of your problems.
An hour or so later, Newt come to get you for the bonfire. For an hour or so you’re up and dancing around, drinking, and having the time of your life. You played truth or dare with a group of Gladers and had drunk at least two and half jars of Gally’s drink.
Once you’re sufficiently drunk to where nothing could get you down, you plop down close to the fire, in between the Minho and Gally.
“You know Minho” you turn to Gally, and he and Minho look at each other. “You’re a shank”
Gally laughs “Ya hear that Minho? You’re a shank!”
“I have a secret to tell you Minho.”
Gally just smiles and says “Oh really, you have a secret for Minho?”
“Yep- it’s a-it’s a big one- about Gally” you slur your words.
“Oh really?” Minho laughs as you turn back to face the fire.
“Yep” you say quietly. For about five minutes, you just sit silently staring into the fire, Minho and Gally share a look behind your back, confused by your sudden silence. You chug the rest of your jar full of Gally’s special drink, and turn to Gally out of nowhere.
“You know Gally has no idea I’m in love with him”
Gally’s face of amusement turned to one of shock. His whole demeanor changed from confident and assertive to flustered and unsure.
“You’re in love with me?”
“Oh sorry” turning to Minho, you look at him seriously. “Gally has no idea I’m in love with him.”
Minho bursts into laughter, stands up, pats Gally on the back and walks over to Newt, laughing the whole time.
“What’s so funny?” you turn Gally and he looks at you with the biggest smile on his face. Slowly, veryyyyy slowly, you realize what just happened.
Oh shit.
“Oh shit.”
“Yeah y/n, oh shit”
“Listen- I’m fuck- I’m really sorry Gally I’m just gonna go to bed now I’m obviously not thinking straight.”
You stand, turning to leave when a strong hand grabs your wrist just as you’re about to walk away.
“Y/n-“
“No Gally, seriously I’m sorry, I really can’t believe i slipped up like that, but I can’t deal with this right now.” You pull your hand out of his grip and start to walk away, tears starting to form in your eyes.
Two strong hands grab your waist and spin you around to face Gally, so that his hands are on your waist, and your hands are on his chest. Heat immediately flushes to your face and you look up at him in surprise.
“Gally?” He stares at you for a moment, eyes roaming over your face. You start to try and pull away, when one of his hands reaches up and cups your cheek, surprisingly gentle. “Y/n-“ his nose brushes yours, and then his lips are on yours.
The kiss isn’t very long, but it’s perfect. When he pulls away you smile, and he laughs a bit.
Feeling bold and empowered by his kiss, you wrap your arms around his neck and pull him in for another kiss.
This one lasts a lot longer, yours and Gally’s lips moving in sync. He pulls you tightly against him, and one of his hands moves to your hair.
“GET A ROOM!” Newt yells at you from across the clearing.
“Gally-maybe we should take this somewhere more private?” You break the kiss, breathing just as heavily as he is and give him a big smile.
Without a word, he picks you up bridal style, in the background Newt and Minho start clapping.
“FINALLY!” One of them calls out.
Along the way to Gally’s hut, you get impatient and start to kiss his neck. He groans softly and looks down at you.
As you keep kissing his neck getting lower and lower he stops somewhere in the Dead heads. He gently sets you down and kisses you sweetly.
“Couldn’t wait till the hut?” You laugh a bit then run your hands along his arms and up to his shoulders.
All of the sudden he grabs both of you hands in one of his, and roughly pushes you up against a tree, pinning your hands above your head. He doesn’t say anything for a while, just stares directly into your eyes with an intensity that you had never seen before.
“Gally? Are you gonna say something?” You’re both breathing heavily, and confusion at his actions is setting in.
“Y/n, you’re beautiful.” Never in Gally’s life had he been so honest with someone.
Then he leaned in and kissed her like it was the last thing he’d ever do, you groan into the kiss, and his other hand moves to your hip and gently squeezes it. His lips move down to your neck and you lay your head back against the tree.
Gally releases your hands and picks you up, wrapping your legs around his waist. Now free, your hands move to his hair, and his hands start to roam your body. The one on your waist moves to your thigh and squeezes it, the one previously pinning you hands against the tree moves to rest just under your chest. Gally moves back up to your mouth and kisses you again, then he throws you over your shoulder.
“Gally! A warning would be great!” You yelped in surprise, now hanging over his shoulder.
“Deal with it.” He walks to his hut and throws you on the bed, and lays down next to you. He moves so that you’re laying completely on top of him. He kisses your head and starts to slowly run his hands through your hair.
“Gally? Why’d you stop so suddenly?” You shift and look up at him.
“You’re drunk- i didn’t want to do something that you might regret.” His voice is level and soothing. With a nod, you lay back down on his chest.
“I love you too by the way y/n” it’s soft, but it’s there. You smile and kiss him gently, lying down again.
As you two are falling asleep, you whisper
“I wouldn’t have regretted it-not with you.”
He gently wraps his strong arms around you in response, and you both fall asleep with smiles on your faces.

The Big Bad Wolf
Part XXIII
Word Count: 3,251
Warnings: none
“I see self isolation in your eyes and I’m going to tell you right now that you better not even think about it,” your voice was laced with irritation, though it wasn’t at all directed at him.
“But it’s obvious I’m an issue and your mom is right about me,”
“My mom is probably worried about her reputation at work. She’s been there fifteen years and they only stopped looking at her immigration status when Pain came and destroyed the village,”
He opened his mouth, likely to remind you of his involvement with Pain, but you waved a hand and gave him a look to silence him. He reluctantly shut his mouth.
“My mother’s anger has nothing to do with you or me, really,”
“How? It sounded an awful lot like it had everything to do with ‘us’,” He used air quotes with his fingers.
You gave him a deadpan expression. You could still feel your adrenaline pumping from the call and lacked your normal delicacy. “You can’t control a person’s actions or emotions unless they’re under a Genjutsu. Maybe what she thinks I’m doing influences her emotions, but that damn well didn’t make her essentially call me a whore,”
“I can’t believe she said that to you,” Obito blurted.
You were grateful he decided to focus on you rather than turning inward. You thought for a moment before you waved a hand, although you had some level of disbelief, too. “She’ll apologize once she’s calmed down enough to realize what she said,”
“That doesn’t make it right.”
“No, it doesn’t,” you agreed. You inhaled deeply, willing the frazzledness to dissipate. As soon as you felt everything calm inside of you, it struck you how very wrong your mother was to do that. She had never been good at handling her emotions, and you usually gave her some grace, but she had really crossed a line this time.
“I don’t… I don’t know that I want to associate myself with her after that,” You looked anywhere but at Obito, who was agreeing with you wholeheartedly in your peripheral vision.
“Okay, well. I guess that’s decided then,” you looked over at him and shrugged.
“Wait, it’s just done, just like that? You’re not going to rant or… get angry or something?”
“No,” you said slowly, raising a brow.
“You’re just.. Making a decision and letting it go,” he stated unconvinced.
“Yes,”
“How?”
“Uh, with practice. A lot of practice. Works better in some situations than others,”
“With practice,” he imitated you poorly, rolling his eyes.
You looked at him where he was seated with his back against the wall, a small twinkle in your eye. “You sounded mean just then, what a big bad wolf you are,”
He shot you a dirty look. He reiterated, “She was right about that,”
You got up, stretching so that the shirt you wore rose and just barely covered your behind. You weren’t going to let him start into a spiral, not after the shitty night you had last night. The two of you were going to at least have a nice breakfast beforehand. Damn Toma and his big mouth for making what you were hoping would be an idyllic morning into a whole show.
“Obito, ‘The Big Bad Wolf’. Y'know, if you're a wolf I’d be happy to be Little Red Riding Hood,” you winked.
He spluttered. You started towards the door, a little extra sway in your step. The door swung open and you left it ajar as you walked out.
“Hey,” he called after you. “What the hell’s that supposed to mean,”
He came after you, catching up just before you reached the kitchen. “What’re you trying to say?”
“Nothing, Obi, I was just being silly,” you said as you dumped the old grounds out from the coffee maker.
You rinsed it out and replaced the piece and turned towards him. He was thinking awfully hard, scrutinizing you and then looking out the window when you went to catch his eye. You almost hoped he saw right through you and knew that you had just outwardly flirted with him.
“Now, what do you want to eat?”
“You don’t have to make me anything, it’s your day off,” he stepped close and reached over your head to grab the coffee grounds, pressing lightly against you.
“I want to,” you replied, looking up into his dark eyes.
He didn’t move away from you or break eye contact when he set the coffee grounds beside you on the counter.
“Really,” he said. “You don’t need to. I’ve caused you enough trouble, I can at least make something for you on your day off,”
“I’ve caused you way more trouble than you’ve caused me, I’ve got it,” you said testily.
“You haven’t. Let me,” he leaned down a little more into your space to argue.
You got on your toes and pressed a finger to his firm chest. “I have. I’ve got it,”
“Y/n,” he warned, coming closer still.
“Obito,” You moved closer until you realized how close you really were. Your eyes flicked down to his lips that were now mere inches away. He did the same, and like magnets the distance began slowly closing without either of you aware of who leaned in first. Your chakra started to intermingle, excited and unbidden. You were a hair’s breadth away, eyes half lidded and a fire already blooming against your lips from where his uneven breath brushed against them. Your phone started ringing loudly from the bedroom and the two of you jumped apart like you were struck by lightning and you excused yourself to scurry to the bedroom.
Obito waited for you in the kitchen while you answered, catching his breath. His heart pumped loudly in his chest, the sound of it thumping in his ears making it impossible to hear anything else. He thought he must still be dreaming because there was no way you were about to kiss him. Absolutely not, you were one hundred percent not interested in him like that, he thought to himself in full denial. That’s why you trusted him to be around you in just his long sleeve shirt and nothing else, right? Because you trusted him not to do anything like that. Oh Kami, had he just breached a boundary?
He pinched the skin of his left forearm, and the pain indicated that he was indeed awake. His heart beat harder at the realization. Were you really going to kiss him? Was he really going to kiss you? He recalled in vivid detail your soft lips inching closer, your lashes fluttering closed as he pressed in. It was like an invisible force had taken over for him, he knew if whatever it was hadn’t he would have never been brave enough to do that.
He looked down the hallway, only to see you coming out with your outfit from the previous night back in place, acting like nothing had just happened. He was immediately confused, and hurt flashed in his chest. He was right. He breached a boundary and you were so uncomfortable you had to leave. He deflated, shoulders slouching.
“Hey, Kakashi called and said I needed to go down to his office NOW. I’ll be back as soon as I can,”
“You mean Monday,” he said dispiritedly.
You paused, one arm halfway through your coat sleeve. “Uh, no. I meant today. So we can have breakfast?”
“Oh, uh,” Obito looked confused, brows pulled together, heart rate starting to pick up again.
“Do you.. want me to wait until Monday?”
“No,”
“Okay, good. I’ll see you after this, then. Have breakfast ready for me, okay?”
“Sure, yeah. Will do,”
You zipped your boots and straightened out. You waved to him and he waved back a little awkwardly, relieved he was wrong. And wondering what the hell he was going to make for you.
…
Kakashi was about to jump up and start pacing when your knock finally sounded at the door. He called you in and you made your way to his desk. He gestured for you to have a seat, so you took one. He reluctantly sat down across from you, his hand landing atop an open scroll.
“I’ve received a letter from Akujia’s military committee,”
His features that had struggled to stay neutral in his worry smoothed into that of marble, cold and expressionless. “You and Hina were not only spotted, but recognized by a man who could name you. It’s lucky he couldn’t identify Obito, too,”
Your whole body tensed and you sat stock still, eyes wide as you processed the information. Who? Who recognized you?
“The head of the committee, a General Casus, is demanding Hina’s return. He explains in length that they have a right to finish what they have started, by law, because she is an enemy of the state by association of the Zen’in and avoidance of ‘fair charges’ brought against her. You and Obito have also been charged in aiding her escape. Their terms are that charges will be dropped against the two of you if she is returned,”
Your jaw dropped. “No!”
Kakashi held out his hand. “It’s okay, I’m not turning her over to be executed for false crimes. No one here is facing charges from the Akujian government. I brought you here to explain the situation and to let you pick where you’ll be staying,”
“Where I’ll be staying?”
He nodded. “I can’t let you stay unguarded in your current apartment. I also can’t afford to put you in another safe house and thin out my Anbu ranks. You and Hikaru can either stay with Hina or Obito for the time being. They both already have a barrier and I’ve just assigned an Anbu guard to Obito’s location,”
Hina’s place was cramped from visitors and she didn’t have an extra room. Plus… you wouldn’t say it out loud, but you could only take the newborn stage in doses when it came to other people. Your eyes roved the room as you tried to make a decision. Would it sound weird if you asked to stay with Obito? A part of you was almost anxious that he knew about what had just transpired between the two of you.
He did have the extra room across from his, and it was your job to care for him so it made sense to pick his home. Would you tip Kakashi off about your crush by asking to stay with him?
Very slowly you replied, “Obito. I’ll stay with Obito,”
He nodded, satisfied with your decision. His face didn’t betray any emotions as he called out for an Anbu. A behemoth of a man entered the room and stood in the center. You couldn’t help but think he was definitely someone you wouldn’t want to mess with.
“Ox, please escort her to her apartment for her things and help her move them to Obito Uchiha’s home,”
He held out two extra large scrolls to the man. “These are sealing scrolls. I don’t know how much time she will have to stay there, so get as much as you can in these,”
That statement surprised you. If he didn’t know how long, you were concerned about what was in the Akujian scroll that he had chosen not to mention to you. What he said was pretty cut and dry, something that shouldn’t take too long to figure out, especially between Kakashi and Shikamaru who was a master strategist.
Kakashi turned to you and picked up a smaller scroll from his desk. “This is a message to Obito, detailing some of the information I have shared with you,”
You nodded and took it from him, standing from your chair and actively keeping your suspicion from your expression. “And Hikaru? Will I be able to pick him up?”
Kakashi shook his head. “I’m going to personally go get him. A rumor his father has started is spreading like wildfire,” His penetrating gaze made you wish the floor would crumble beneath your feet. “I know that it’s not true, but I can’t have him starting fights with you out in the open after receiving this… request. I need you secure as soon as possible,”
“Of course,” you said quietly, completely mortified.
“Who will take Hikaru to and from school?”
“We can discuss the details later,” he dismissed you with a wave of his hand.
You nodded and you left with Ox trailing closely behind you. The walk was silent and rushed. You knew better than to try to start conversations with Anbu while masked, not that you particularly wanted to at that very moment. The first thing you did was change your outfit once inside. Then, you took your own sealing scroll and piled your clothes and shoes on top of it. You told Ox to use one of the scrolls to get Hikaru’s bedroom cleared out, and could hear him moving things around while you worked.
You felt a little dazed as you went along, pulling blankets and some odds and ends into your pile. You sealed the scroll and pulled out another from your bedside table. You went into the kitchen to grab some things before you forgot. Who knew when you would be going to a store again. Ox followed you in, tucking the used scroll in his uniform.
“What else, ma’am?” he asked in a deep voice befitting his stature.
“The rest of what’s in my bedroom, if you could, please. I think I have anything else covered,”
He nodded and walked back to where you had been while you emptied the fruits and vegetables you recently bought from the refrigerator. Whatever you thought would fit ended up in the scroll, and you hoped it would be plenty. Obito’s fridge was pretty full as it was, but the man ate, well, like a man, and there would be three of you to feed.
You also hoped he wouldn’t be upset or overwhelmed by this sudden change. Living with you would be one thing, you were obviously familiar enough with each other. Which might also be an issue, but you digress. Adding Hikaru to the mix was a whole different beast. You loved him very much, but that didn’t change the fact that he was still a two year old.
You were a little nervous walking through the woods to his house. And by nervous, moreso excited. It had dawned on you that you would be staying with someone that you really liked, if almost kissing him this morning indicated anything. It was hard to accept before, but running to him for safety really opened your eyes to the idea that it might be okay to like him. And what your mom had said to you made you want to be with him more. It had only solidified to you your belief that he was a good person. Obito being a wolf in sheep’s clothing was a ridiculous notion. From what you had seen first hand, he was actually a scared sheep in wolf’s clothing.
Ox didn’t have access to the barrier, so he handed off the scrolls at the clearing before joining his team in the trees. You walked through normally, feeling a little odd knowing that you now had an audience. You noticed that the snow had almost completely melted, a shame for Hikaru who would now have a yard to play with it in. Konoha was never cold enough to keep snow for very long, it was lucky you had had it the past few weeks.
You opened the door and the smell of coffee and eggs wafted straight to your nose. Obito had already stood from the couch, his own mug set on the floor next to it. You couldn’t help but grin at him.
“I have some news,” you related a little more excitedly than appropriate.
His brow raised. “I’m guessing good news by the way you’re smiling at me,”
“Both!” You pulled the scroll Kakashi gave you out of your coat pocket and handed it to Obito.
While he read it, you went ahead to the spare bedroom down the hall. It had been awhile since you had opened the door, and it was probably in dire need of dusting. Your suspicion was confirmed by your sneezing the moment the door was yanked open. You left it ajar and went to the linen closet for a duster and some rags.
You had just walked in when Obito appeared in the doorway. “How is any of this good news? And what are you doing in here?”
“Oh,” you said and put the duster down. Of course you had gotten ahead of yourself. “The good news is that I’m moving in with you for the time being. Kakashi wanted me safe inside a barrier. Lucky the place I work already has one, right?”
Obito blinked at you in surprise. “You’re moving… here? With me?”
“That is what I said, yes,”
“And you’re okay with that?” He shifted on his feet.
You had a very strong urge to roll your eyes. You placed a hand on his arm. “I’m okay with it if you are. I mean, who knows how long I’ll be in lockdown. It could be months before we see each other again otherwise,”
“You mean you could be stuck here for months?” Despite his wording, his features became more animated, almost like a child about to receive a birthday present.
“No need to get too upset about it,” you joked.
He shook his head, but the light shone in his eyes despite his best efforts to look neutral. You imagined yourself kissing him to make him give you his goofy lopsided grin again. You cleared your throat as soon as it passed and tried to think of anything else. “Uh, you made breakfast, right?”
“Oh, yeah.” He remained in the doorway for a moment longer before willing his body to move away from you.
You followed him out. He poured you a cup of coffee and handed it over to you before stepping over to the oven where he had been keeping the food warm. He opened it and pulled out a plate with two egg sandwiches.
“I don’t really know how to make anything else breakfast-wise, so, ta-da. I hope it tastes okay,”
You reached out and he placed the warm sandwich in your hands. He took his own and you could tell he was waiting for you to take the first bite before digging in to your own. You held yours out towards him. He looked between it and you, quite confused.
“To our new living situation. I think it’ll be quite the adventure,”
“You want me to like, touch my sandwich to yours?”
“It’s a toast, Obito,”
He blinked slowly at you. You waved the sandwich at him. “A toast, get it?”
“Do I… have to live with you?” There was a slight curve to his lips.
“Hush up and toast with me,”
He rolled his eyes while his smile grew. After an eternity, he touched the corner of his sandwich to yours. You grinned, satisfied, and he couldn’t help it that he broke out into a crooked grin to match yours.
He took a slow bite of his dry sandwich. Internally, he repeatedly thanked whatever universal force it was that decided it was finally time to have his back. Maybe he could have a little something good, just this once.

Tickletober Day 10: Bound (AU)
Words: 1057
Note: I really love this AU, too bad chapter 2 is only out after tickletober…
T/w: Restraints, insanely rough tickling
Lee: Subject 811
Ler: Subject 28
Subject 811 roamed the halls warily, having an unwavering fear that something was definitely creeping up on him. Its tentacles felt around the walls of the area carefully, surprised that 251 wasn’t behind one of them and attempted murder for touching his beloved home with, and he quotes, ‘filthy appendages’.However, his moral compass was indeed right, a mischievous snicker from a nearby locker going unheard by the usually observing subject.
Just as the tentacle-covered man was about to escape his shadowy home in order to pester 310 to get his constant shivers away, he felt a puddle wrapped around his ankle. Eyes widening from the profound feeling, 811 instantly tried lifting its foot to try and shake off the weird, sticky mass to no avail, and if anything the goo only found its way to his other ankle, holding it down without a fight. He was completely bound in what felt chains, his human hands trying their best to rid the sticky substance. To make matters worse, it just began absorbing his arms instead, making it fall to the ground with a grunt as the goo absorbed him.
“How did you even not notice it was me?!” 811 wouldn’t recognise that voice anywhere in the facility, eyebrows furrowed as his eyes closed in exasperation. Subject 28, who never not took pleasure in seeing him suffer, practically annoying him to death with his antics; and of course this was one of them. The sounds of splotchy footsteps began to approach closer and closer to the black haired man, before he felt a warm breath against his neck, tentacles immediately going to slap away at the younger subject, letting out a groan when 28 dodged it with much ease and no struggle.
“L-Let me go, you- ARGH!” 811 cursed, before he felt fingers rubbing against one of his tentacles, slapping away the other hand with a loud frustrated growl. He heard a sneaky snicker from behind him, being flipped onto his back by the same, annoying substance that he was practically being consumed in. He struggled and thrashed as the purple and black goo came for his tentacles, pinning them to the ground and holding him hostage; he was bound to the floor at this point.
“Hmm, how about I leave you there in my goo, until you learn to give a little respect?” 28 hummed, taking a seat on the floor afterwards to watch the chaos unfold. 811 raised an eyebrow in confusion, before tendrils began to form out of the goo that he was trapped in, vibrating against his hypersensitive tentacles, sending him into a cackling fit. His limbs tried in vain to get away from the sensations, but being weakened continuously was far too much for him, only able to laugh his head off as 28 watched with a knowing smirk.
“NOHOHO! I-I’M SOHOHORRY!” He wails, but is completely helpless to the tickling. Squeals and shrieks escaped him whenever the goo managed to slip through another suction cup or two and vibrated into it, only able to shake his head in desperation and a somewhat glee. His hair sprawled out of the mess that was both the substance and his body, cheeks heating up to a tomato red from the constant tingles on all eight of his tentacles, he couldn’t take it!
“So quick to cave in~ I almost feel bad…” The taller hummed as he crawled closer, before shoving his hands under 811’s shirt, scribbling his fingers over his sensitive, unprotected armpits. But what he wasn’t expecting was a loud scream to tear from the usually stronger throat, pulling at his bound limbs harshly as hysterics flew from his lips. It didn’t get any better when fingers kneaded at the curve of his spine, making him arch his back with a cry.
“OHOHO GOHOD PLEHEHEASE! I CAHAHAN’T M-MEHEHERCY!” Poor 811 pleaded, tears of mirth welling up in his eyes as they streamed down his cheeks, colouring them with the reddening blush that was about to spread down to his chest. Heaving a sigh, the substance around his tentacles stopped the unbearable vibrating, but kept them held down regardless, removing his fingers from 811’s shirt temporarily.
“Aha..thank you- NOHO NO PLEHEHEHEASE! AHA-!” 811 almost thanked in gratitude before the substance shot up to his soles, pulling his toes far, far back before nails raked all over the bare feet, earning a loud scream of both agony and desperation for mercy. Nowhere on his bare feet was safe, anywhere that 28’s fingers weren’t the goo was, wiggling, scribbling and vibrating over the smooth surface while he smirked and cooed over the mess he was making of the shorter; he had to do this more often…he didn’t even smile this much when they were on playdates together! Finally seeing that his laughter began to sound broken and hoarse, 28 left him alone, lifting his fingers and retracting the mass away from his soles, but kept his ankles intact and stuck to the ground.
“Fine fine~ But only because you look like you’re about to die if I don’t give you a break.” He heard the taller’s snickers above him, panting and trying to reprieve from the torture he was being put through, and he didn’t even know why! Finally able to open his eyes, crinkling them up from the bare light that creeped in despite being in almost pitch black, he felt hands land on his stomach, scratching lazily over it. Bursting into sweet giggles, he pulled at the goo that held him steady, the mass pinning down all of his limbs and ensuring that he was going to giggle till he felt like his head was going to explode.
“Noho more! M-Mehehercy!” Seeing that he already called out for mercy twice, the mass began to seep away and back into 28’s arms, leaving 811 to huff on the ground as his tentacles twitched from the rough tickling they had been through, before curling in and engulfing him to look like he was cuddling himself. Laying beside him, arms wrapped around the shorter into a cozy embrace, running a hand through his hair while a tendril came up to wipe away the tears, 811’s own tentacles finding their way to the cuddle party as well.
Maybe the cold hard facility floor didn’t feel so bad anymore…

Reiner Braun - Wonderland (part 1)
This is the Reiner work I have been talking about recently. I have decided to split it into two parts as it is very long. It follows AOT timeline, so please be mindful of any spoilers ahead. Specifically, this first part contains spoilers from season 1-3 (ish). The segments and different timezones of the story are divided by quotes from different Taylor Swift songs, which were vital for the formation of this idea. More specifically, the song that served as the backbone for this first part of the story was Wonderland, from the 1989 album (I wish there was a Taylor's version for it, but we'll have to wait I guess.)
gn! reader.
usual AOT violence.
1.8 K words.
Enjoy this, and let me know what you think!
Didn’t it all feel new and exciting?
Standing in formation with the rest of the cadets was the only thing that made sense. New soldiers were needed to confront the menace that 5 years before had changed your lives forever - you didn’t want any more kids to witness the horrors of the titans invading their cities, devouring their dearest people.
The training had been intensive; every day for the past three years you had to battle against hunger, degradation, physical challenges that pushed your body over limits you didn’t know humans were capable of reaching. A lot of fellow comrades had left, unable to bear the overwhelming difficulty of the course; it was difficult to find a reason to live after your whole life had been erased right in front of your eyes - it was hard to find a reason to fight, now that there was no one to protect.
Those thoughts were popular even among the most motivated cadets - even Eren had his bad days, in which all it seemed pointless. Holding your closed fist to your chest while swearing fidelity to the Survey Corps, flashbacks of the training days came back to you in a blur - and you couldn’t help but be grateful for the friends you made along the way. If it hadn’t been for them, lord knows what would have happened to you. The image of Marco’s body was still vivid in your mind, and despite all the sorrow that his death had caused among your group, you couldn’t help but be grateful that it wasn’t you - you were safe for now, and so were the people you loved the most.
“It’s scary to think we’ll be going back there in less then a week.”
Reiner spoke, catching the attention of all his comrades, shutting down all the nonsense chatting.
“I’m sure we’ll be fine.” Jean replied, his lips curving into a weak smile.
Everyone nodded in agreement, trying to move away from Reiner’s statement and cheering up the mood among the dining table you were all seated at. Marco’s death was not yet fully accepted - it had been a week since Jean had to identify him and then watch the fire take away what was left of his dear friend. All of you were still mourning his passing.
A loud sigh escaped Reiner’s lips - despite his reassuring demeanour, he was just as scared, just as emotionally drained; he was just better at hiding it. Being a soldier meant being ready to face the same horrors all over again, watching the people you grew up with die in the most horrible, inhumane way. Stretching your arm under the table, you were quick to find his hand, letting your fingers interlock with his, giving his hand a feeble squeeze. You wanted to remind him how you could see right through him, how you could understand his turmoil because you had been through so much just like him, but at least you still had each other.
Life had not find a way to separate the two of you just yet, always looking out for each other during missions, risking your lives to protect the other. It had always been like that between the two of you, even during your training days. If you were punished, Reiner would go out of his way to be punished with you - he didn’t want to leave you alone, he didn’t want you to be anywhere but next to him, even if that meant running until his legs gave out.
A pink blush coloured Reiner’s cheeks, who was quick to hold your hand tighter in his grip, gifting you the softest smile you had ever seen. Of course, that did not go unnoticed by your annoying friends, who were quick to make you and Reiner the topic of the conversation and embarrass both of you, making everyone else laugh at how ridiculously cute your relationship was. The love story going on between you and Reiner wasn’t new to anyone; you had been hanging around each other since the very first start of your training course, and never parted ways ever since. Reiner was your first love, your first kiss - the first person you were able to love again until losing your whole family; and you would have done anything for him. The only person who really knew about this was Mikasa - you had confessed everything to her, knowing that she would be the only person able to understand exactly how you felt.
“Cut it out.” Mikasa finally spoke, elbowing Connie.
“Hey!” Connie was quick to reply. “It was just a compliment.”
Too in love to think straight, all alone or so it seemed.. but there were strangers watching, and whispers turned to talking, and talking turned to screams.
After having captured the Female Titan, the hypotheses about the Colossal and Armoured Titans became stronger, central to the plan of the next Survey Corps mission.
“It can’t be.”
Was all you managed to say after Hanji finally exposed their theory, suspicions pointing out directly towards your lover and his friend.
“We can’t rule it out. But we need to gather more information so please, please -“
Hanji begged, leaving you speechless for a second. How could they ever suspect of Reiner, wasn’t he decisive in every mission you have had? Questions began to crowd your mind whilst the rest of your squad silently looked at you, waiting for an answer. They wanted you to investigate, to discover more about Reiner’s past and true identity, as if you didn’t share countless nights with him - as if he was the one responsible for your family’s death. A fleeble nod was the only response you were able to give, trying your best to remain lucid. All you had to do was prove your boyfriend’s innocence, how hard could it be?
Doubts started insinuating in your mind when Reiner started avoiding you, spending more time with Bertholtd. They were always close friends so even if their closure seemed legit at first, what seemed suspicious was how incredible talkative Bertholtd had become; the shy, introverse guy was now replaced by a more confident figure, who exerted so much more influence on Reiner than you could ever imagine.
“Are you a soldier, or a warrior? Where does your loyalty lay?!”
I felt your arms twisting around me; I should have slept with one eye open at night.
Forcing yourself to keep quiet, you were quick to bring your hands to your mouth in an attempt to suppress your sobs. Pressing your back against the wall, trying to hear more from the conversation Reiner and Bertholdt were having, you forced yourself to resist a little more. Tears started running down your face as Bertholdt described Marco’s incident, praising how well they had handled the situation before their cover up got screwed. Mumbles were coming out Reiner’s mouth, inaudible to hear from behind a close door - but enough to make you realise the truth.
“That doesn’t mean he is one of the titans..” you whispered, after reporting everything you heard to Hanji. Your voice echoed in Erwin's office, whilst the brightest minds of the survey corps put all their pieces together.
“Go back to your team and tell them the plan; you did good.” Levi answered, resting his hand on your shoulder.
As if a little bolt inside your had just broken, you were unable to function properly. Your movements became mechanical, moving around like a puppet who mindlessly followed the orders of its superiors. There was a lot you still weren’t able to process - having to overhear your boyfriend’s conversations, trying to accept the idea he was responsible for the complete destruction of your life, getting your head around how he could stomp on the corpses of your fellow citizens one day and make you fall in love with him the other, how could he cry in front of the ashes of your comrades - who lost their lives because of what he did.
“What’s wrong?”
Reiner asked, wrapping his arms around your waist and engulfing you in his arms, letting your back rest against his broad chest. He had no idea about what you knew, and as if you already didn’t go through enough, Hanji asked you to act as if you were oblivious to everything you just discovered.
“Just tired.”
Reiner hummed in response, kissing the crown of your head and holding you tighter. He tried to savour this moments as long as he could; a part of him wished you could follow him back to Marley, but he knew better. He knew where your loyalty lied, he knew just how much you would have hated him once you discovered the truth - and he hated himself too.
And in the end, in wonderland, we both went mad.
“I’m sorry.” Reiner whispered, his eyes full of tears. “I love you.”
These were the last words Reiner said to you before pushing you down the wall, your body precipitating down the Wall Maria as you watched him transform into the Armoured Titan.
The bolt of yellow lightning coloured the whole sky in front of you, blinding you as your body continued its fall. Every inch of you had hoped you were wrong, you prayed for it to be all just a bad dream until the very last moment; you had faith.
When Jean wrapped his arms around you, carrying your body over his shoulder while moving along the wall, you were finally brought back to reality.
"Are you okay?!" he shouted, trying his best to move away from the battlefield.
You remained silent, watching Eren fighting the Armoured Titan. Squinting your eyes a little bit, your gaze meticulously scanned the titan’s features - his eyes, his hair, the little hump in his nose that was oh, so familiar. How could you be so blind? How could you not recognise the face of the man you loved?
Jean was quick to bring you to the top of the Wall Maria, letting your body sit on one of the wooden benches they prepared. Resting his hands on your shoulders, Jean vigorously shook your body trying to bring you back to your senses. Absent-minded, the only thing you managed to do was staring at the floor in front of you, trying to process everything you just witnessed. Reiner’s titan screams filled the air, piercing your ears like a drill making its way to your brain. Bringing your hand on your ODM gear, finally coming to your senses again, you tried your best to not run to him. Every muscle of your body was screaming you to move, to run towards the man you loved and save his life as you always did. But you remained still, fighting against every single one of your instincts.
“Are you okay?”
Jean asked again, this time in a softer tone. He kneeled before you, his pupils moving rapidly as he worriedly stared at you. You were in the middle of a battle ground and you weren’t responding, you were alive but not living at all. A simple nod was the only response you managed to give him, before getting up and walking towards your commanders. This was your fight more than anyone else’s; the Survey Corps needed a plan, and there was no one who knew Reiner better than you.

“Whoa there.”
Today, they’re not having lab time; instead, they’ll relax and watch a movie together. Hence why Tony comes to the door to get the kid.
… only to be hugged immediately after.
Peter glues to him like a koala, arms and legs holding him tightly. Tony can’t help the chuckle.
“Miss me much?” He jokes.
The boy doesn’t snark back.
He doesn’t say anything. At all.
He…
“... Peter?”
He’s trembling.
“Peter,” Tony says seriously. “What happened? Are you hurt?”
The kid is shaking his head against his shoulder.
Tony feels… something wetting his shirt.
“... I watched you die,” Peter says, crushed. “Y-You were bleeding so much…”
“Oh, Pete,” Tony returns the hug more properly. “Did you have a nightmare?”
Peter nods.
“Oh, buddy.”
He doesn’t know if it’s due to the kid’s spider powers, but thankfully, Tony is able to carry him to the couch near them. Peter doesn’t dare let go of him, likely scared that Tony is going to die right in front of his eyes if he does.
“It’s okay,” Tony whispers. “It’s okay, I’m here, I’m not going anywhere.”
“I-I’m sorry.”
“Shhh, it’s not your fault, kiddo. You didn’t do anything wrong.”
“I could’ve saved you.”
Tony then realizes, this isn’t just about him.
It crushes his heart.
“I’m here,” Tony says simply. “I’m okay.”
Peter sobs painfully. All the older man can do is soothe his back.
Eventually, he can tell the kid’s hold on him relaxes. Still, Tony can tell Peter doesn’t want to be alone again. He won’t let that happen.
“You can tell me these things when you have them, kid,” he says.
Peter sniffs. “I-I don’t want to bother you.”
“You won’t.” He manages to look at the boy’s wet, red-rimmed face. Tony smiles at it lovingly. “You’re my kid.”
Peter stares at him, eyes glowing with more tears. Tony dries them carefully.
“Besides… I think I know better than anyone else how it is to have nightmares. I can help you, Pete. Promise.”
The other looks surprised. “Y-You… have nightmares, too?”
Tony sighs and nods.
Peter seems so shocked. After all, Iron Man is his hero. There’s this ideal around him that nothing can hurt him, for he’s made of iron. People tend to forget the very human being inside, and act like he’s weak for being human.
But of course, Peter is not like everyone else. He’s a good kid who would never think that way of Tony. He’s too good for him, honestly.
“It gets easier,” Tony tells him, “but we need support for that to happen. So you can count on me, okay?” He smiles again. “Even if I can’t see you for any reason, I promise you can call me any time of the day, and I’ll always answer. Anything for you, kiddo.”
Peter looks at him like Tony came from heaven. Even with all the reasons for him not to think that way of the man.
“... you can count on me, too.”
Tony frowns briefly.
“It’s alright, Pete,” he tells him, “you don’t have to.”
“But I want to help, too. You don’t have to handle it alone, either.”
Tony wants to melt. But…
“... I don’t want to hurt you,” he mumbles.
He doesn’t explain it further.
Peter is the one who smiles.
“You won’t. I’ll be okay. I just want you to be okay, too.”
Shit. Now Tony’s eyes are the ones growing deep.
He pulls the kid close to kiss his forehead for a good couple of seconds.
“God, I love you so much,” Tony says dramatically.
Peter snorts. “Love you, too.”
He never expected to grow this attached to someone so quickly, especially after everything that happened in the past few years, but now here he is.
“Do you want to pick a movie, Pete?” Tony asks. “But if you want to do nothing, then that’s fine, too.”
Peter considers. “How about both?”
Tony hums. “Both is good.”
He picks Star Wars but leaves the volume low, as the two lie down, Peter on top of Tony. The kid sometimes repeats a few quotes from the film, but otherwise he’s pretty quiet. He seems tired. Obviously. Poor thing.
Halfway through the movie, Peter has fallen asleep. Tony feels like he has a cat on top of him that he can’t disturb. This is his life now.
And it’s totally worth it.

Video Killed The Radio Star
Joseph Quinn x Reader
18+ (Minors DNI or I’ll hex you and that’s a promise)
Angst, slow burn, strangers to lovers, femme AFAB reader, eventual smut, mentions of drug use (Weed, Nicotine, alcohol.), Mentions of past abuse, reader is a radio host, reader is from Canada, use of Y/N, more to be added as things progress.
AN- Hi! This is the first fan fiction I’ve written since middle school. you can let me know if you want to be on a tag list. I work full-time and have adult responsibilities so I will try to write chapters when I can, but there will likely be some inconsistent posting. Just trying fic writing again to get my creative juices flowing.
Chapter 1 “You’re Hired”
---
“Come on Y/N, you need to get back out there eventually.” Alex said, snatching your phone out of your hand and holding it away from you.
“No, Alex, I do not need to get back out there,” you said making air quotes. You tried to grab the phone back, but you couldn’t reach it as she held it over the aisle of the bus.
“I’m downloading tinder and making you an account.” Alex said turning the phone towards you to use your face ID. “You need to find at least a fling while you’re on this trip. All the guys would melt at your voice in an instant, I know it.”
You sighed and held your head in your hands. You weren’t ready to move on yet, thoughts of your ex still swirling around in your brain. He dumped you 7 months ago, but that was the kicker. He. Dumped. You. You were still very much in love when it happened. No, he wasn’t anywhere near perfect. He was a little controlling at times, but you loved him. He had you hook, line, and sinker. Then, out of seemingly nowhere, he kicked you out of your shared apartment, and you were forced to sleep on Alex’s couch. It was older than you with springs poking your back the moment you shifted your weight even the slightest.
“I think I should, I don’t know, get settled, and maybe get my own apartment before I jump into that, Alex. Seriously, I don’t want a relationship right now, and I don’t do hookups.” You gave her a cold stare as she was going through your camera roll, trying to find the best photos to put on your profile.
“Y/N, holy shit you look smoking hot in this.” Alex stared at the photo in question. It was a photo from Halloween, Your Playboy bunny costume leaving little to the imagination. It was 3 weeks after your breakup, and after not being allowed to show your body off for 3 years you decided to say fuck it. You thought taking a guy home would help soothe the pain you felt in the pit of your stomach, but after 3 minutes of grunting while you lay underneath, stiff as a board, it was safe to say hookups were not your cup of tea after that.
“I don’t want people to get the wrong idea about me. I’m not looking to hook up with people, Alex. That night made me realize that.” You sighed as you stared out the window, the streets of London bustling as you rode from the hotel to your job interview.
“Well this could be a fresh start for you, Y/N. No one here has a clue who you are. Maybe all these British men are sex gods or something. Everyone knows everyone in our town, this place is worlds different. A lot easier to avoid the ones that finish in 2 minutes.” Alex laughed at herself, thinking she was a comedian as you keep a close eye on the bus stops.
“We’re here, Alex. Now give me my damn phone.” You said, snatching it out of her hands. She turned to you with puppy dog eyes. You rolled your eyes and stuck your tongue out at her as you pushed her to get up and off the bus.
“I still can’t believe you got a job interview in London, and they were so insistent on meeting you in person that they let you take me.” Alex raved as you walked the last few blocks to your destination.
“I know, it was a little strange. I thought they would just do everything online since I certainly didn’t have the money to fly here myself,” you slow your pace, taking in the city surrounding you. You sigh and look at your best friend. “I just needed any excuse to get out of that town. It was too much pain for me to stay. I’m just glad the station let me take the remote gear so I can still do my show. ‘Y/N live from The Big Smoke.’”
“If you get this gig that means you are moving to another continent, and I’m never going to see you again.” Alex pouts.
“Oh, don’t be so dramatic. You’ll be taking plenty of vacations here to see me. Not like you need to pay for a hotel, you can sleep on whatever shitty couch I grab off the side of the road,” you laugh.
“Okay, rude,” Alex retorts. “I just mean I'll miss you, Y/N. I won’t know who to do tequila shots at the bar with anymore.”
“I’m sure lots of guys will want to do shots with you. Maybe other stuff too...” You chuckle to yourself as you see the building come into view. “I think this is it. Looks pretty swanky.”
You press the buzzer and an older lady answers. “104.5 The Surge, how can I help you?”
“Um, Yeah, Hi. My name is Y/N Y/L/N, I’m here for my interview with George Thomas for the Program Director Position.” You feel your heart pick up speed and your hands are suddenly clammy.
“Don’t be nervous, Y/N. They will love you, I promise.” Alex whispers. She could see your body tense, clenching your jaw and grinding your teeth together as the lady on the intercom responds.
“Oh yes dear, we were expecting you. I’ll buzz you in.” The door unlocks and you hold the door open for Alex to step through. Giving her a wide-eyed expression so she knew how much you were panicking.
“Just breathe. You’ll be fine,” Alex said as you step into the lobby. The walls were a rusty orange, autographed records and photos covering the walls. A locked trophy case filled with awards catching your attention as you stepped towards it.
“Is that a grammy? Wow, I wonder how they got their hands on that?” You looked in awe at all the awards and slowly walked to the desk where the lady from the intercom sat, Typing away while humming the song faintly playing in the background.
“Y/N, it’s nice to finally put a face to the name! George has not stopped talking about you since your first interview.” She beamed up at you.
“Really? Oh, well, I guess I’m glad I left a good impression.” You played with a hangnail on the side of your thumb, focusing on anything but the fact you were about have a job interview for the opportunity of a lifetime.
“George will just be a few minutes, because one of his meetings is running a little late. If you want to take a seat over there by the fireplace He will be out soon and come to get you. If you need anything in the meantime, my name is Cynthia.” She gestured to the opposite side of the lobby where there were a group of green leather couches, looking pristine and comfortable.
“This sure beats your couch, huh Alex.” You plop down on the couch with a thud, feeling the plush memory foam of the cushion allowing you to sink into it.
“Well you won’t have to sleep on any couches if you get this job.” Alex quips back.
A familiar voice comes into ear shot. Very low and gravely with a very posh accent. “Well, I’m glad you could stop by to interview for the podcast before you fly out. We really appreciate your time,”
Another voice, that sounds much younger responds, a pretty accent on him that made his words sound like silk. “It’s really not a problem, I always remember where I started, George.” He sounds... Familiar. No one else was ever in your online interviews, so you can’t pinpoint who the voice belongs too.
The older man you recognize swoops around the corner and sees you and he stops in his tracks. “Y/N! I’m glad you made it! I’ll be with you in just a minute.”
“Absolutely Sir, take your time.” You said, a little more chipper than you wanted it to come out.
“Oh, call me George,” he says as he continues towards the door. The man behind him follows around the corner and you recognize him immediately. You look over at Alex and her jaw could have been on the floor.
---
On the plane ride from YHZ to LCY the two of you decided to watch the new season of Stranger Things since it just came out and you needed something that would last you at least a good chunk of the ride. You downloaded them on Netflix the night before you left and started watching together on your iPad while it was propped up on the tiny tray table. You were watching together in silence until you saw a new character being introduced.
“Ooo... A new person? I’m interested.” Alex says as she leans in a little closer to the screen. When the face from behind the magazine appears, she backs away from the screen and slumps back in her seat turning to face you. “Damn I was hoping for another Steve Harrington to thirst over, what do you think Y/N-”
You were staring at the screen. Mouth agape, eyes fixed on the man on the screen in front of you.
“Y/N. Really? Joe Keery exists and THIS is who you see and immediately have the hots for?” Alex teased.
“I do not!” You hit her with your elbow and paused the show.
“I never knew you were into freaks, Y/N.” Alex laughs pretending to wipe drool from your mouth with her sleeve.
“Wait was I seriously drooling?” You grab your phone to look at yourself in your camera.
“HA! Gotcha! You do have the hots for him.” Alex laughed, trying to contain herself so she doesn’t annoy everyone on the plane.
“I need to find out who his actor is as soon as we land,” you said.
---
You sat there in shock, and looked at Alex who was still sitting beside you. Eyes wide and mouth wide open. You elbow her and she comes back to reality, smoothing her hair and adjusting her posture so she looked as pretty and feminine as possible.
“Y/N, this is Joseph Quinn. I don’t know if you’re a Stranger Things fan but he has just had his big break as their new addition to the main cast,” George said. Gesturing to Joseph. He was blushing at his introduction, not being used to celebrity status yet.
You get up from your seat on the couch and start panicking immediately. You weren't mentally prepared for this interview, let alone meeting the man who somehow awakened something in you hadn’t felt in 3 years. “Yeah um hi, it’s nice to meet you Joseph. I’m Y/N Y/L/N since I guess we’re on full name basis here.”
He chuckles at your introduction. Oh my god he thinks I’m funny. “Oh, just call me Joe. It’s lovely to meet you Y/N, and this is?” He said gesturing to the girl beside you. Once again, she is stiff as a board with her mouth wide open in shock.
“Well, this is Alex. She is a big Stranger Things fan so I think she might be a little star struck right now,” you giggle as she comes to from hearing her name. She gets up and rushes over eagerly, taking Joe’s hand in a firm (and probably a little too enthusiastic) handshake.
“I can already tell you're not from here, so what brings you to The Surge? New project you’re chatting with George about?” He said taking in your features as he talks. Your head looks at the ground while you laugh, but you can still feel his big brown eyes on you. You felt a little weak in the knees.
“Y/N is here from a small town in eastern Canada, and she is actually interviewing to take over my position. I’m moving into a less hands on roll I can do from home as I ease myself into retirement,” he said. “I can’t wait to be able to travel with Rhonda and do the things we’ve talked about before we get too old.”
“Well that’s lovely, George. You deserve it. Good luck with the interview, Y/N. I may be seeing a lot more of you.” Joe said giving you a smile and reaching out his hand to shake yours. You were now acutely aware your hands are very clammy. You quickly rubbed your hand on your pant leg and he cupped your hand in between both of his, feeling something light in your hand as you closed it into a fist, and stuffed it in your pocket to look at later.
“C-can I get a photo if you don’t mind?” Alex said, holding her phone out to you.
“Uh, sure absolutely,” Joe said, wrapping an arm around Alex as you back up and snap a photo of them.
“One of those should work,” You said to Alex as she steals her phone out of your hand and Looks through the photos.
“Y/N. You better get this job. I want to walk in here to see Joe Keery walking out next.” She whispered in your ear as she walked back to the couches in the lobby.
Joe looked at you and gave you a quick wink and cheeky smile as he headed out the door. George a few steps ahead to open it for him “Don’t be a stranger, Joe.” He said as Joe steps out the door.
“I’ll let you know when I’m back in London!” He calls back, walking to the car waiting for him.
“Alright, Y/N, let’s get this party started shall we? Follow me.” George leads the way to a conference room with a large circular table with 15 chairs around it.
“This is a lot bigger then the board room at my home station,” you said scanning your eyes at all the art and memorabilia that covered the walls, the newest one sitting on top of the table. A framed Hellfire club shirt with Joe’s signature.
“That’s an original from the show,” he brags. “Joe interned here as a kid before he started acting. I always knew he was going to go somewhere. So this is a big deal for us here, but enough about Joe. This is about you. How was your flight?”
“No delays, surprisingly,” you said. Feeling some of the nerves start to dissipate as you sit on opposite sides of the large table.
“Well, I must say, it’s a first for us to be flying someone out for an interview, but with the rave references you got and how much you’ve accomplished in your short career, I can’t help but think you’d be a perfect fit to bring a breath of fresh air back into this station.” George said.
“Wow, well it’s a passion so I try to give my all in everything I do. When you love what you do, you never work a day in your life, right?” You ask.
“Absolutely, and I know I said this was an interview, but I actually just wanted to offer you the job in person,” he explained. “I think you can do a lot of good for this station, and nobody else seems to love the job as much as you do. What do you think about that?”
“A-absolutely I accept. Thank you so much, I will not let you down,” you stutter. Your hands shaking as you reach over the table to shake his hand.
“Now, we will pay for your trip home and back to grab your things, but we have a fully furnished flat ready for you to move into,” he explained. “Joe’s new building had an opening and he just bought all new furniture so he gave his old stuff to us to put in there for you.”
“Joe, as in the Joe I just met?” you asked.
“Yeah, he just messaged me saying you can pop by before 5 o’clock tonight and he will give you the grand tour. Apparently, it’s pretty nice. Don’t worry about the first month's rent either, we will cover that for you, and it’s well within your budget,” he said, handing you a keycard. “This is for the station door. Welcome to the team, Y/N.”
“This is a dream come true, truly. Thank you for this opportunity, I am so excited to start,” you said.
“Well, I think you have a friend in the lobby waiting to hear the good news!” George holds the door open for you and you step out, walking down the hall to see Alex in the lobby. She looked at you with a hopeful gaze and you slowly revealed the key card from behind your back. She immediately jumped out of her seat and hugged you, picking you up and spinning you around.
“My best friend is a radio star!” She squealed.
“Yeah right,” you rolled your eyes when she put you down. “We will see about that.”
“It was a pleasure to meet you, Y/N. You as well, Alex. I’ll walk you out,” George said. Gesturing for the door.
You dug in your pocket and felt what Joe put in your hand earlier. You pulled it out and noticed it was a gum wrapper. Confused, you unravel it to see a note written in red pen.
My number is on the back. Call me and I’ll show you the best place for a celebratory drink. Congratulations.

When it comes to Brittany S. Pierce, people’s interpretations are all over the place. It ranges anywhere from <3 innocent babie <3, to severely cognitively impaired, to manipulative liar who pretends to be stupid so others obey their will (which I’ll later accuse her mother of, but that’s neither here nor there). Anyways, I’m adding my opinion into the cacophony because, despite the indecisive fanbase, thorough Brittany meta is lacking in quantity. Also, I tend to think my opinion is best, as is human nature.
This analysis is rooted in autistic!Brittany, and while its unnecessary since I’ll go through many of her autistic characteristics, here’s a post detailing the headcanon and a medical article describing the diagnostic criteria in simple terms if you’re unfamiliar with the disorder. I understand that not everybody considers Britt neurodivergent, and that’s totally fine - I’m always up for a healthy conversation/debate! - but please give me a heads up if you plan to respond critically because a lot of this is based on my own experiences as an autistic teenage girl, so unmentioned critiques can feel personal fast. Now without further ado:
A Deep Dive Into Brittany S. Pierce <3
Auditory Processing Disorder “APD” is a subdivision of Sensory Processing Disorder “SPD” which is a quintessential element of an autism diagnosis. APD is pretty much exactly what it sounds (haha pun) like: despite somebody’s hearing abilities, the brain fails to process auditory input properly. The APD trait I hear discussed most in autism spaces is the inability to filter out background noises, but Britt seems to struggle most with interpreting meaning from words. Sometimes when people talk to me (“dolphins are just gay sharks”), even though they’re speaking clearly and I’m very literate in English, it sounds like jumbled nonsense (“dulfanz-our-goost-gae-shorcks”). This accounts for what I’m calling Brittany’s “so close you can taste it” lines. Think of her claim that Christopher Cross discovered America or that O is the capital of Ohio; a man named Christopher C. is indeed credited with discovering America and O is the only capital letter in Ohio. As a whole, they often misunderstand things told to them directly, and it seems a lot less foolish if she only understood half of what was being said via APD.
I’m calling the category of Brittany lines that can’t usually be rationalized as possible by anybody over seven (e.g. Rory the leprechaun, storks delivering babies, and anything with Lord Tubbington) the “stranger than fanfiction lines.” Now, I could take these at face value and say she’s tapping into a magical dimension, but I have my own set of autism driven realism issues, so, without a pre-existing fantasy world, I’m using my significant brainpower to twist Brittany into plausibility =D I ultimately think the best explanation for the stranger than fanfiction lines is echolalia. Echolalia is the repetition of words or phrases, and it’s usually associated with autism. Autistic people often reuse other people’s words, and since we usually think in pictures and have various social communication problems, it’s easier than formulating new sentences. Or we just like the tongue movements/sound a word makes. Personally, I quote songs a lot - if you say something loosely related to a Taylor Swift, musical, or Glee lyric, chances are I’ll sing it - and dipsomaniacal is a new fave to say randomly. There’s some evidence for Britt doing this in canon, unrelated to the stranger than fanfiction lines. While Brittany is known for calling him Blaine Warbler, it actually originated from Rachel and the infamous spin the bottle kiss. They also repeat ‘uber weird after Blaine in the That’s So Rachel reading, and the last line of that scene is them talking in time with Blaine, a behavior seen in S1 with Santana. However, it interests me most that she calls Artie a robot, as we see her dad call Stephen Hawkin, another wheelchair user, a robot in S6.
Basically, I blame the Pierces for how terribly adjusted their child is <3 (Mostly Whitney. Assuming Pierce actually has an IQ of 40, he’s disabled too and deserves some slack in terms of spreading misinformation.) In her admittedly limited screen time, Whitney manages to do two positive things: be an LGBTQ+ ally and let her younger daughter do soccer, I guess. Otherwise, she kept the truth about Stephen Hawking from Brittany for 20 years, cheated on her husband on their honeymoon for claiming infertility, crapped in random barns, insulted her husband’s intelligence, publicly insulted her husband’s appearance, and arguably restricted her daughter’s intellectual growth. To be honest, I realize Whitney isn’t that deep and I don’t actually hate her, but if people can hate Brittany for being a comedic character from the 2010s, I’ll do the same thing to their mother in defense of Brittany. Fight stop the violence with violence, baby! Anyways, I don’t think echolalia alone can explain the stranger than fanfiction lines. At least, not without a source. And that’s usually where upbringing comes in.
I’m ruling out nature automatically because there aren’t chromosomes telling people to believe in unicorns. Well, some people - including autistic people (hehe see what I’m doing here?) - are more inclined to believe falsehoods, but falsehoods have to be fed by someone else. With autism, the reckless believing tendencies come from literal thinking in part. Also, since SPD makes processing the outside world difficult, we often can’t recognize “obvious” truths in the first place. My extended family hated watching movies with me because I used to ask questions every five seconds lol. Setting Pierce aside because he seems to follow Whitney blindly; Brittany’s unnamed sister, Sue, and Whitney are the remaining suspects.
I assume Brittany’s sister is significantly younger than Britt because she played soccer with a seven-year-old in S1 (technically she could’ve been the coach, but that throws off my theory that the Klaine/Brittana wedding was child free), and children aren’t clever or mean enough to throw off anybody’s world view so badly :) Sue does seem the obvious answer, but she didn’t meet Brittany until they started high school, and she’s consistently baffled by Britt’s behavior despite encouraging her own eccentricities in the other Cheerios. And that leaves Whitney as the perpetrator, blaming her Scientology and gambling addiction on a cat.
Finally, I do think there’s a few times when Brittany intended for her jokes to be jokes. I don’t think it happens as much as you might expect, but there’s a scene in S3 when JBI is interviewing Brittany about her class president candidacy, and she tells him she’s voting for Rick “The Stick” Nelson before turning to Santana and laughing that clued me in. I think the mentality behind these lines (the “pun intended” category) is best explained with an anecdote from my own childhood.
When I was little - maybe six or seven - I really wanted to be funny. Well, I wanted to be liked, and since I didn’t understand social cues, my solution was humor because I knew my dad told jokes which made me laugh, which made him likable! Unfortunately, as a literal thinking child, I had no idea how to do this, which meant I parroted the only joke I knew (“What time is it when an elephant sits on the table?” “Time to get a new table!”) in hopes of chuckles. This went about as badly as you would expect. After a while, my parents got rightfully fed up with this joke and got me a joke book. I had no sense which of these jokes were funny, which wasn’t helped by most of the book being about taxes, bad marriages, and other stuff aimed at adults.
It wasn’t until a routine walk to the convenient store that my comedy dreams were fulfilled. My dad, little sister, and I used to walk to the “snack store” to buy a drink each and share a candy bar. While we had some routine favorites, we also tried out new candies together. However, there were a few bars my dad refused to buy because he’d disliked them prior to our snack store outings. Most infamous of these forbidden fruits was the Zero Bar. We tended to reference the Zero Bar when picking our next treat, and on this fateful day I said, “It’s called the Zero Bar because zero people like it.”
And my dad laughed. He laughed because of something I’d said. I was elated!
The only catch up was I hadn’t actually intended it as a joke. After all my attempts to be funny, the only thing that apparently worked was speaking my mind. This singular incident didn’t rewire my understanding of humor - I attempted the parroting tactic with the Zero Bar joke after all - but it’s the most pivotal moment in my mind. To this day, I play up my neurodivergent thought process to make others laugh. I reference Glee at seemly unrelated times with mock enthusiasm to callback times I’ve mentioned Glee with real enthusiasm or talk about my other interests in forced monotones.
There isn’t any actual evidence that Brittany has the same weird complex about humor, but some of their interactions regarding stupidity parallel it. In general, when they’re away from Santana, Brittany appears fairly insecure about her neurodivergence. I might even go as far as to say that she doesn’t joke without Santana around. Now, I don’t think Britt knows what her atypicalities are until they’re presumably diagnosed at M.I.T., but every neurodivergent person I know knew something was wrong before being diagnosed. (I want to talk about how Blaine’s diagnosed autism is a foil for Brittany’s undiagnosed autism at some point, but you didn’t sign up for autistic!Blaine, so now isn’t the time.)
Anddd, that’d pretty much it for now :) I intend to write more in depth Brittany meta in the future, but this is a decent overview for the time being. I hope this made you think, and I’d love to hear your thoughts if it did!

LOST ITEMS
STRANGE BLUE STONE. It sparkles in the sunlight, and sends a strange power coursing through whoever picks it up. Though, it seems that it won’t do anything unless you have a certain power. It probably belongs to someone who isn’t completely human.
Location found: Dining Hall Gardens.
THE SACRED SWORD: YATO. A divine sword that you probably should return to its owner posthaste. It doesn’t belong in the hands of someone who cannot wield it, and such a precious thing shouldn’t be left out just anywhere anyway. It probably belongs to a noble with a bit of an absent mind.
Location found: Knight’s Hall.
CHILDREN’S STORYBOOK. A childish fairytale, the stuff of dreams that young kids like to make their parents tell them. Its pages are well worn, like someone has read it to their child a hundred times over. It probably belongs to someone who writes home to their daughter often.

YEAR-IN-BOOKS | 2022
This was unfortunately the second year in a row that I’ve actually had to decrease my goal on goodreads to actually meet the goal. I decreased it once in August when I realized that I wasn’t going to get anywhere near 80 books by the end of the year, then I had to decrease a second time at the end of November. Very sad.
Nevertheless, I did churn through a total of 54 books, on track for my goal of at least 55 by the end of December. I think that next year I will be setting my sights low, just so I can pleasantly surprise myself if I exceed rather than have to decrease.
1. a book you loved?
I think that my all time favorite book this year was A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers. Now, Becky writes some solid literature. I have never once been disappointed by one of her works. But the Monk and Robot series seized onto this soft human part of me and just twisted until I leaked. They’re gorgeous little books that make you feel things about your place in the world, make you feel things about the nature of being human. If I could only recommend one author for the rest of time, it would be her.
“You don’t have to have a reason to be tired. You don’t have to earn rest or comfort. You’re allowed to just be.” < This quote, from Prayer goes hand in hand with the quote from her previous book in the series that I waffled on about last year. The foundation of this entire premise is laid on these quotes, that you don’t need to do anything special to be human. You’re allowed to just be you. Be at peace. That’s enough. And I just really needed to hear that these last two years.
2. a book you hated?
Probably The Summer Place by Jennifer Weiner. I’d been hyped up for it, which was probably the first problem. The main character was so astoundingly selfish that I closed the book after the first 40 or so pages and never picked it back up again. It doesn’t help that they brought the pandemic into it and like? I’m sorry, but too soon. I don’t want to read about the effing pandemic when I’m still being forced to live in it. It’s ongoing and the last two years were effing traumatic. Don’t make it a plot point.
3. a book that made you cry?
I mean, obviously I got super weepy over A Prayer for the Crown-Shy, but I just talked about that, so the one that made me weepiest after that was Peter Darling by Austin Chant.
”This book is for every villain who ever inspired a queer awakening, and for every queer child who ever saw a piece of themself in the enemy.”
Someone posted the above words on twitter earlier this year, which turned out to be the dedication page for Peter Darling. I loved it enough that I went looking for the book and managed to get a hold of it after being on the hold list for my library’s single copy of it for... months? Suffice to say, the book gutted me over and over again. It is absolutely perfect and definitely in my top five this year.
4. a book that made you happy?
Okay, so the Watcher Boys put out a book - Buzzfeed Unsolved Supernatural: 101 True Tales of Hauntings, Demons, and the Paranormal. It would be a great book even if I’d read the physical copy, HOWEVER, I made the glorious decision to purchase the audiobook, and sure enough, Shane Madej and Ryan Bergara narrate. It cracked me up over and over again, and just generally made a shitty week better.
5. the best sequel?
Hmm, I only read a few prequel and morequels this year, but I think of those my two favorites were Nona and The Golden Enclaves. They were both great follow-ups to their previous books and in the case of The Golden Enclaves, an all-together (or mostly) fantastic end to the series. I did love Nona despite thinking I wouldn’t. I loved her so completely that the ending of the book left me legitimately grieving a bit. And my only complaint about The Golden Enclaves is that I think it would have been more satisfying if certain people had stayed dead.
6. most anticipated release for the new year?
Honestly? For the first year I genuinely can’t think of anything coming out next year? I think a whole lot of them have been delayed. But if they are coming out next year, I’m looking forward to the sequel to Dark Rise and the final Locked Tomb novel. I feel like they both may have been delayed until 2024, though?
7. favorite new author?
I finally bit the bullet and took on Samantha Shannon’s incredibly long but equally epic novel The Priory of the Orange Tree. Shannon may not be a debut author, but she is new to me, so it counts. The book exceeded even my wildest expectations. The world-building was fantastic and the characters were fully realized and I absolutely got attached.
Also, Lee Mandelo introduced me to Summer Boys, a book of horror and love and toxicity and it was so perfectly my vibe.
8. favorite book to film adaptation?
I loved the adaptations of Sandman and Paper Girls. Both were fantastic.
9. the most surprising book?
I downloaded the audiobook for The Rise of Kyoshi mostly on a whim, but it was so good. It really delved deep into the existing Avatar worldbuilding and then proceeded to expand on it in all kinds of delightfully grimdark ways that the show never would have been allowed to show off.
10. the most interesting villain?
I mean, obviously Peter Darling is the clear answer here. BUT! The Traitor Baru Cormorant also sort of counts, right? Since she’s basically making herself the villain of her own series to crush an empire?
11. the best makeouts?
Honestly, probably The Love Hypothesis. I ALMOST answered with Ice Planet Barbarians, but that’s not really best executed makeouts, just the horniest. Love Hypothesis is basically a Reylo modern-day AU where they’re both chemists, and you know? It just really worked for me.
12. a book that was super frustrating?
If it wasn’t The Summer Place, it was Dial A For Aunties, which was the only other book that I did not finish. I wanted to like it so, so bad, but I just couldn’t suspend my disbelief long enough to keep up with the pretense of her dumb decisions. I know it’s a staple of romcoms, but it hurt too much for this one.
13. a book you texted about, and the text was IN CAPSLOCK?
I think I ranted to Nick about a couple of them, but I don’t have enough book friends.
14. a book for the small children in your life?
I don’t think I read any books appropriate for small children this year. Actually, I lied. There was this really sweet one that our local park told in small increments as you go along the trail - Over and Under the Pond.
15. a book you learned from?
I literally only read fiction this year.
16. a book you wouldn’t normally try?
I don’t know. I think all of the books that I read this year were pretty on brand, to be honest.
17. a book with something magical in it?
A Lesson in Vengeance was very spooky and witchy with a generous helping of dark academia. I believe it was the first book I truly loved this year.
18. the best clothes?
Definitely either The Priory of the Orange Tree or The Jasmine Throne.
19. the most well-rounded characters?
Either Siren Queen by Nghi Vo, or The Traitor Baru Cormorant. Every single one of those characters - but especially the main ones - know exactly who they are.
20. the best world-building?
The Priory of the Orange Tree. 100%. That book was a masterpiece.
21. the worst world-building?
Eh, the world building I feel like was okay in most of them. The ones that I didn’t like I generally hated because of the characters.
22. a book with a good sidekick?
Casey Mcquiston has a talent for writing compelling side-characters, and spoilers, she’s still great at it. I Kissed Shara Wheeler had several really well-built side characters that I genuinely gave a shit about.
23. the most insufferable narrator?
I made the mistake of getting The Lost Metal in audiobook form, and it’s the same narrator who did The Stand. He is very, very dry.
24. a book you were excited to read for months beforehand?
I’ve been really looking forward to reading A Restless Truth, but I’ve been too effing busy. Other than that, your usual suspects. Maggie’s third and final Dreamer novel, the third and final Scholomance novel. A Prayer for the Crown-shy.
25. a book you picked up on a whim?
Hmm, I think maybe Notorious Sorcerer? His red coat reminded me of Kell from A Darker Shade of Magic. It was a great book.
26. a book that should be read in a foreign country?
All of them? Book Lovers was a good summer/beach read.
27. your favorite cover art?
I actually really loved the cover art for The Ones We Burn.
28. a book you read in translation?
I don’t think any were.
29. a book from another century?
I don’t think any of them were written in another century, but a couple of them took place in another century. Does that count?
30. a book you reread?
Wow, I don’t think I reread ANY this year. Maybe I should remedy that and go reread The Captive Prince series for the fifth time.
31. a book you’re dying to talk about, and why?
I feel like this question should be further up the list. I thought for sure that I’d touched on them all, but turns out I was wrong! Nettle and Bone was a lovely little dark fairytale. From the ingredients in the spells to the depth of all the characters, I genuinely enjoyed this book, far far more than the last Kingfisher novel I’d read.

How you can use AI to push boundaries in SaaS products
My name is Juliette Denny, and I am the CEO at Growth Engineering. We create really engaging technology fueled by artificial intelligence.
Now, I know this subject can seem like traveling to an alien planet, but I’m giving you a step-by-step guide to reach lift-off!
Here’s the breakdown: 👇
Main talking points
What is AI
AI in more detail
Hollywood has warped our understanding
Business applications
Unprecedented growth
Better outcomes
What is AI?
There’s a number of different definitions of AI. But none of them define it better than this quote from Professor John McCartney.
In other words, AI represents our efforts to stimulate human intelligence through machines. AI is usually applied to automate tasks or processes to make them more efficient.
These are the more challenging tasks that humans would do, rather than easier tasks. An important thing to note right off the bat, is that AI isn’t a substitute for human activity; it augments human activity.
AI can take over tasks that would be more time-consuming for a person, like looking through legal documents to find precedents and commonality. On the other hand, things that’re easy for human beings, like walking, are very hard for AI to pull off.
Okay, so now that we’ve got the definitions out of the way, let’s dig into AI in a little more detail.
AI in more detail
Now, within the subject of AI, there are many subcategories, and we’re going to cover them in this section.
Weak/narrow AI
Typically, when people are talking about weak or narrow AI, it’s the type of artificial intelligence that’s limited to a really specific or narrow area. So, for example, we have Alpha Zero. That’s a computer system that’s basically excellent at chess. But if you were going to bet on this system in a game of Scrabble, you’d be out of luck.
General AI
This system seeks to establish a kind of intellectual agent that can learn any top tasks that humans can. In other words, it’s on par with a human ability. This has been used when assessing loan criteria, for example, whether something is low or high risk.
Super AI
As you may have guessed by the title, super AI would be something that has superseded human intelligence. The potential of these kinds of technologies is unprecedented (and potentially scary!) It’ll probably be a long time before we arrive at this point.
Machine learning
This is a subfield of the wider AI. It allows the software to learn through an algorithm so that it can complete tasks more efficiently.
Deep learning
This is a type of machine learning that uses artificial neural networks. It progressively learns from the data that’s being pushed through the neural network. This is a textbook example of AI augmenting human actions.
Hollywood has warped our understanding
Sadly (or maybe luckily!) we’re not anywhere close to Terminator 2 or Ex Machina.
Better examples
Modern-day examples of AI include things like:
Recommendation engines
Virtual assistants
Chatbox
Intelligent Search
Email filtering
Driverless cars
All of these are powered by AI. Now, we’ve highlighted some modern examples of AI, let’s look at some companies that have invested heavily in AI.
Domino’s
So, I don’t know about you, but I love pizza, but do you know what I didn’t love? Ordering pizza on my cell phone for deliveries. Often you’d be waiting there, not knowing what time it was going to arrive, wondering if they’d forgotten about it even!
What Domino’s pizzas did is they used artificial intelligence to develop a model which allowed them to predict when your pizza was going to get to you. They went from an accuracy of 75% to an accuracy of 95%. This also worked out well for Domino’s because it meant they weren’t getting as many calls.
Deutsche Bank
This company really utilizes AI in a different way. They used it to identify attractive loan clients to speed up their loan approvals. This happens as the customer is actually filling in the form, and it’s really speedy and efficient. Just think about how much manpower and how much expense banks must rack up from having to employ people to carry out those checks!
The knock-on effect has been that more people have signed up to use this process. Now, more loans are getting approved, and more business is being done.
IBM Watson
IBM Watson has a number of applications in terms of customer service. They have a smart assistant, which uses conversational AI to help resolve over 7,000 customer inquiries a day. The reason why this works is that most of the customer inquiries are the same customer inquiries, it doesn’t require human intervention, so we’re driving down the cost of delivering the service.
Real breakthroughs
Having said that, there are also really powerful examples of AI. It has the potential to engineer unthinkable technology, as well as technological and scientific breakthroughs. Because machines are able to analyze data so much quicker than mortal brains.
A good recent example would be…
Deep Mind
Deep Mind’s AI program was able to solve a problem that scientists have been trying to crack for almost 50 years. Now, I’m no protein scientist, but what a protein does largely depends on its own unique 3D structure. Understanding how different proteins can fold can really help us develop new medical treatments.
It represents a real, significant advance in human understanding. Because scientists were unable to understand how the math worked, It was estimated that it would never be known.
But of course, Alphafold came to the rescue! It’s a software from DeepMind that’s able to analyze the available data. It then develops really strong predictions of the underlying physical structure of the protein within a matter of days.
Unprecedented growth in AI
A lot of large organizations are investing in AI. If you’re a small or medium-sized business, never think that you are locked out of AI, because the reality is, there has been a huge amount of investment made by the big technology companies. And now this technology is widespread. It’s very accessible to smaller companies.
Don’t believe me? Here are some key stats on the growth of AI:
97.2% of organizations are now investing in AI (NewVantage Partners)
AI tech investment will reach $232 billion by 2025 (KPMG)
AI will contribute $15.7 trillion to the world economy by 2030 (PwC)
Why should AI be so interesting to you? Well, first…
It automates time-consuming tasks
Let’s say in customer success, for example, they’re answering the same questions over and over again. By utilizing bots, you can speed up the time that you can respond to customers.
When you usa a customer support helpline, you’ll typically encounter a bot filtering out the common questions before they put you in touch with a human being.
AI increases team efficiency
Your team is freed up from answering the same question over and over again. They can work on more challenging questions, and they can really formulate creative ways to innovate, do their jobs, and deliver value for the customer.
Is AI going to replace humans?
This is really the million-dollar question, right? But the reality is, it’s really not true at all. Robots are not going to replace humans, they’re going to make human jobs more humane.
Robots will be doing the four Ds in jobs. These are:
Jobs that are more difficult
Jobs that are more demeaning
Jobs that are more demanding
Jobs that are more dangerous
Humans get to be the superheroes
They can get creative and really focus on solving complex problems, those wonderful things robots will never be able to do. What we really should be doing is trying to advance AI and machine learning to take over stuff that we really don’t want to be doing ourselves.
What we do at Growth Engineering
The first thing is, we are not a big company. We’re working on a shoestring budget to produce something which is really meaningful. Humans are naturally curious, but sometimes when it comes to doing online learning, we stop being curious.
Our main goal is to determine how we can get AI to facilitate learning being easier. Here are some of the ways that we think can achieve that:
AI can automate tedious admin tasks
When you join a Learning Technology Department, you don’t join because you want to work a learning management system or create e-learning, you join because you love training people. So, one of the things that we really wanted to do is enable L&D professionals to focus on what they love doing, which is developing people.
How can we utilize AI for account provisioning, user provisioning, etc?
AI can create personalized learning pathways
Think about your Netflix recommendations – which are AI automated– how would you feel if it kept pushing the same content at you based on an algorithm? E-learning is the same. By freeing up people, we can allow them to curate pure curiosity and deliver the stuff our learners really want.
How can we refine learning?
One of the things that’s really important in learning and development is showing that you can do something as well as know it. We want to make learners more than a passive recipient of a piece of content.
AI can help in getting people to practice the skills before they actually put it into practice.
We want to make it easy for admins to understand the process of learning.
We want them to understand that:
You need to see the information.
You need to be reminded of it through testing and assessments.
You actually need to do it.
If we can pull together processes, AI can actually facilitate this for the admin, and we’re going to get better outcomes.
Better outcomes
Example 1: recommendation engines
There are many big technology companies that have recommendation engines you can plug into really easily. All you need to do is Google AI and you will find a whole variety of different services that they offer. One of the things that they offer is recommendations engines.
What does that mean for us? Well, we need APIs that bring together our user-provisioning information with our content information in order to deliver good recommendations for our learners
Now, one of the challenges in this is that the model can only be trained once the user information is there. You need to have a cold start, but once you get going, one of the great things about recommendation engines is they focus very much on what colleagues in your industry are doing rather than the actual content itself.
Example 2: User & content provisioning
This is admittedly pretty boring, but it’s a massive part of onboarding. With our customers from big companies like L’Oréal and BT, the users and content they provision can come from five or six different enterprise platforms.
Not only that, the content can come from five or six different content providers, including their own content providers. We can end up with different elements of metadata in the information that we get. For users, we can get a lot of patchy information.
Often it’s a real nightmare for some of our clients to be able to put the data in the structure. We need to onboard them and get the right recommendations in terms of content. What we’ve been able to do with AI is use auto-tagging.
This allows us to match between the content and the provisioning data in order to get the model started. It’s not quite a cold start. We’re able to get between 56 to 70%, depending on how much information is coming over from the content metadata.
Example 3: Intelligent search
We need a deep intelligence search on our own platforms, as well as on the learning content itself. We need to do intelligent search on everything in the ecosphere of our customers, not just the information on our platform, Intelligent Search is a great way of doing that.
Using API’s, you can easily push out to other platforms, get that information, and then bring it back to your users in whatever the user interfaces.
Example 4: Content Creation
Content creation is a massive headache! Most organizations have a huge amount of information that they need to get out to their people. Some of our biggest clients are in retail, and there are products coming all the time. You can have a situation where you’ve got to spend 180 hours creating a single hour of e-learning. Yeah, no-one has time for that, right?
AI can very easily upload PowerPoint presentations, upload work docs, upload PDFs, and then put it into a series of templates. Again, this frees up educators to do more actual educating. We’re in a situation where we’re able to coach people one-on-one in a more personalized manner.
Example 5: AI coaches and mentors
Okay, so let’s say we know what the correct curriculum is, if we push that into the AI engine, we create the content really quickly. Once students start asking questions, the AI can query it out, and find subject matter that answers these questions.
You’re going to have some tutors there initially, but it could be a very personalized level of learning.
Ideas are cheap…delivery is expensive
This may be true, but let’s also remember that there is no delivery without ideas. You’ve got to start somewhere, right? We can’t just all throw up our hands and say, “it’s all too big! It’s all too complicated. It’s all too expensive.”
AI is absolutely not a mysterious planet that can only be visited by spacemen, or, in real world terms, the top five technology companies. It really should be the new bread and butter of any SaaS company.
At Growth Engineering, we’re a very, very small company, but we’ve made AI and ML absolutely central to how we operate.
Everything that our department does is driving towards this idea of utilizing AI and ML where possible, in order to deliver more, for less. That mindset change is a really important part of moving towards AI.
The problem is always data
Don’t think that your first thing you’re going to be doing is building neural networks. The thing is, you don’t have to. There are just so many free and open-source elements to try. Instead, the constraint is always data. If the problem is that you’ve got lots of replicable data, then you will very easily be able to find an AI or ML solution.
Find the thing that can be automated
Find the process within your organization that can be automated. Find out which of those processes you’ve got the most data for. If you don’t have a large amount of data, then reach out to open source sites for code that’s been written, and try and play around with it, if you can’t find it for free.
There are lots of SaaS providers that have all the components you really need in order to plug your data for.
Find a pilot project
Finally, if you have exhausted the above, look at paying for a pilot project for a consultancy. This can be internal or it can be external. To be honest with you, I don’t think you need to be putting in huge amounts of resources for actually building the model.
Key takeaways
AI helps us to automate time-consuming tasks: Just imagine the much innovative, creative work your team can do when they’re freed by AI!
It has helped other industries to cut out costs and drive more value: It might seem like a big investment, but it’s more than worth it. Believe me.
Intelligence is what makes us human: AI is just an extension of that.
AI is not going to take over our lives. If anything, it’s going to make our lives infinitely better.
Have fun!

My dear girl,
What a night.
I went to sleep peacefully yesterday. I make a point of re-reading old books that meant something to me at certain points in my life. This exercise allows me the possibility of understanding things through new lenses, under new perspectives. Re-reading a text that meant something to you in the past is a great way of knowing yourself in the present. You’ll find new favorite quotes and form new opinions over old ones. I’ve been wrapped around ‘Sense and Sensibility’ for the last weeks. My concept of Jane Austen is ever-changing, every time I grab a book by her, I’ve read in my adolescence I find a new woman in them. I appreciate new things about her, about her work. I learned a little bit about being feminine with her, the elegance and poise she describes the main characters with have been guiding lights in my earlier years. Last night I rediscovered something new about being feminine. The notion of being feminine encompasses a lot, from girly tastes to strong opinions, being a woman is always something very idiosyncratic.
Yesterday, Elinor Dashwood – the composed and affectionate heroine of the story – showed me that being a woman is also about being argumentative, reckless and impatient. I have always been stuck between doing the right thing throughout my life. Somehow along the way, failing never became an option, mistakes were illicit, and errors were seen as an outage to the person I envisioned myself to become. It’s a heavyweight I must tell you, it has placed me in difficult situations where I end up hurting myself to protect others. Elinor, through her toughness, conveyed to me a very special lesson: forgiving the follies of others does not mean you must understand it, it means you mustn’t allow it to hurt you again. You can acquire a few sentiments of empathy and even understanding over someone’s situation, but it is your choice if it ever hurts you again. Forgiveness is about moving on, without an apology or a conversation, it’s about choosing to close a door that no longer leads anywhere. My love, you can close doors all by yourself, do not wait around for the automatic mechanism to do it for you. That is not the woman I raised.
When someone chooses to repeat mistakes that hurt you in the past, you must close the door, it no longer leads you to where you’re supposed to be. When someone perpetuates acts that wound you deeply, that shatter your heart into a million pieces, close the door before you’re out of strength to do it. This is why I’ll always tell you “If you want to know how someone really feels about you, do not use feelings or thoughts. Look at their actions.” I saw a movie once where the guy proclaimed his love repeatedly, over and over again, he said: “-I’m in love with you, you’re the love of my life.”, to this, the girl asked: “-Where? Where is this love? I can’t see it.”. This is it; this is what I mean. One can tell you he loves you, one can even think he does, but if he can’t show it, leave, close the damn door sweetie. It is not your job, and it never will be, to take responsibility for other peoples’ needs.
Be reckless, be opinionative and make mistakes. You will hurt peoples’ feelings sometimes, and although I know you won’t do it on purpose, I would rather have them hurt than you. I’m not saying you have an excuse to be an idiot, that’s not what I’m saying. What I want you to do is to live freely, without fearing making mistakes, without being intimidated or frightened by what it means to be a woman. I never want you to be petrified of being alone or afraid to act accordingly to it if you feel the need to.
I’ll always be here my angel, and I’m sure there will be others. There will be others who have fallen in love with you and that will stick by your side no matter what. Collect these people, they’re the ones making this experience worth it.
Love,
Mom, June 23th 2023

jade *sighs* why you out there trying to kill me *sobs* what have i ever done to you (let’s forget i was the one asking for dis)
i just wanna start this review by saying that i wasn’t able to wait until i got home and i read this on the bus lol. two things: i might have cried a little. maybe it wasn’t the best choice. i swear to god your writing just gets better and better, and this one might be my favorite one of yours yet.
i just dkfskjdkjsdh 🔪😠 fucking love the way you write hobi. all your hobi fics are just ridiculously flawless and the ANGST ON THIS ONE HAD ME LIKE
but let’s organize this review ok, i wanna start by pointing out some of my favorite sentences of yours. some because if i were to point all of them, i’d quote the whole fic. but i’ll have you know that this review is simple??? idk, i wasn’t able to synapse so much ig lol, i’m tired
first, i dont really know why, but i loved the first line
There’s a decommissioned junkyard outside of town.
i just felt like it was such a charming way to introduce the story lol, especially with this addition:
It’s desolate and depressing, but despite all that, it’s a sanctuary.
to have a sanctuary in a junkyard… i don’t know, i just love the setting so much 😭 it did remind me of romeo + juliet movie too.
also the way you hint to their situation here:
You’d spent more time there lately than you’d ever be free to admit.
god, that’s such good wording. how do you think of these istg 😭 also, again, her pessimism here is just soul crushing.
the reader felt like someone growing apathetic — or at least trying to – towards the whole situation. and i also think this is my favorite reader of yours, cus her voice is so interesting!! it’s very interesting the way everything feels depressing until hobi arrives. and moments like this:
It loses more and more of its smoothness the longer it sits out, exposed to the elements, but then again, so do you.
that suggests, that it gives us a glimpse of how much the reader must’ve been through and how much she’s losing her innocence (as in, hope) throughout all this.
and even if you never really explicitly say what has happened and we’re just getting a day — or rather, some hours into their lives, parts like this make everything feel so tangible, so real: you build this scenario, this world in such a palpable way:
You hear him before you see him, but that’s purposeful. Hoseok kills the headlamp on his motorcycle before he comes anywhere near the junkyard — just in case, baby.
and returning to the idea that everything feels depressing until hobi, the way you make the first time the reader sees him be under the light too:
Still, when he finally steps under the yellow glow of the street lamp — your only source of light, save for the moon — and he’s all you see.
and the ANGST 😭😭😭😭😭:
He’s swallowing words, based on the blatant twitch of his jaw. Always clenched to keep from calling out to you, as if the abandoned area wasn’t chosen for its ability to keep your secrets.
the idea of not being able to love out loud is so heartbreaking and you captured it so well.
and this here:
The distance at which his limited words keep you is contrary to the way he holds you — close to the chest like your feelings are as fleeting as moments like this, gently as if you’ll break apart in his hands.
i don’t even have anything to say about it, just fucking perfect writing that speaks for itself. and on that note, this sentence broke me so much:
There’s enough fondness in his eyes to drown in and you would, in a heartbeat, if time was ever on your side.
i mean, what were you THINKING, this is a masterpiece:
A little constellation, guiding you North from your southside trap to a home you can’t have.
THIS IS SO BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN I CAN’T—
“I didn’t have a choice and I never will.”
YES HE WILL WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT, EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE
also,
Hoseok’s mouth pulls up slightly at one corner; and you know what that looks means. It means twenty minutes down the drain, shaking a tail before he can make his way to you. It means that, next time, you may need to find a different hiding spot.
this paragraph specifically made me love them so much. how much they go through just to get a glimpse of each other 💔😠
You don’t normally say the obvious out loud, but reality doesn’t always stay in the cage you try to lock it in. “We’re playing with fire.” “In another life,” Hoseok replies wistfully while his fingernails scratch — affectionately, teasingly, cautiously — down the expanse of your bare thigh. “We were arsonists.”
*jungkook festa voice* i’m upset *pout* i’m so upset
this was such a good dialogue i don’t HAVE WORDS, JUST FEELINGS
No longer in a junkyard on the outskirts of town, no longer on opposite sides of a line in the dirt, no longer trying to shove flowers into the front of a shotgun.
It’s enough, you think again, like repetition will make it true.
i was dying, but this line reminded me of this meme:
you’re so mean to me, what have i ever done to make you wanna make me cry like dat istg, this had my heart tightening in my chest, i was so desperate i was horny and crying, and the fact he notices she was about to cry i mean—
Hoseok notices your rapid blinking when you settle down on him. He knows without having to ask, kisses you through an ache that isn’t physical at all. It, like him, stays where it’s kept: in the left side of your rib cage.
you’re such a poetic writer too. i mean, you always write within some word limit for these requests and you’re always to deliver the most, the best, in such a small wc. and it’s due to sentences like this one.
and when SHE CRIES, GOD I WAS CRYING TOO:
Spent in every way that matters, you can’t fight off the sob that starts in the pits of your chest and crawls out of your mouth. The shiver down your spine can’t be blamed on the wind.
this is such a heartbreaking image, i was so gone.
and that’s why i’ll choose to ignore the last sentence ok. WHAT ACTUALLY happened was that the gangs realized they are too in love and everything was well and they lived happily ever after, thank you very much.
~anyway
i always get impressed with your ability to set the tone. there wasn’t a single moment of fluff relief during this, i was alert the whole time, scared someone was gonna show up (I’M SO GLAD NO ONE DID HAHA), and their relationship felt so fragile. not in the sense that we doubt their love, but in the sense that it seems like it’s already in an afterlife, not really existing and just waiting for the inevitable end. actually, regarding their bond… omg, they feel so in love that it hurts
also, your character’s voices are always so well flashed out. their feelings towards one another, their apprehension, and we can clearly see that their current situation and dynamic is a result of a long time sneaking like this — the hopelessness, the emptiness, the routine that feels overbearing… UGH idk, jade. this took me by surprise cus i definitely wasn’t expecting it when i requested this. it exceeded all my expectations, as your writing always does, and now i’ll just go cry in the corner.
CONGRATS ON THE MILESTONE BABY, here have some flowers 💐
here i come with a humble request 🫡
i was thinking of a hobi + secret relationship trope... maybe smutty too if you're up for it lol 👉🏽👈🏽
can't wait for the drabbles you're gonna write omg 😭🤲🏽
what lua wants, lua gets 🫡 tbh i think this is one of my favorite things i’ve ever written, so tysm for unwittingly setting that stage 🫣
the one where hoseok plays with fire
pairing: degenerate!hoseok x afab!reader type: (d) angst, smut (18+) | wc: 1.6k au: secret/forbidden relationship, rival gangs, romeo & juliet kinda vibes 🤫 cw: acknowledgement of membership in street gangs but just to explain the dynamic (no depictions of gang activity); minor threat (not the band, just the potential consequences of their actions); public (ish?) sex; unprotected p in v penetration; not much in the way of foreplay because i’m operating under a word limit, lol; biting, a lil bit; gratuitous imagery of hoseok wearing chains 🫣 a/n: this popped into my head while listening to $20 by boygenius on reeeeepeeeeaaaaat. def check out this song (and the record!) there’s a direct quote from the song in the dialogue, btw. credit for that bolded bit goes to julien thee baker.
There’s a decommissioned junkyard outside of town. It sits within a constellation of run-down warehouses and empty parking lots, and has a gravitational pull all its own. Finding it doesn’t take much, just fifteen minutes on the expressway, two turns at perpetually-blinking traffic lights, and a specific strain of desperation not many will ever know the likes of. It’s desolate and depressing, but despite all that, it’s a sanctuary.
A hill to die on.
You’d spent more time there lately than you’d ever be free to admit. A veritable coffee stain on a map, you’re not sure that its existence on that side street was anyone’s conscious decision. Likewise, you can’t say for certain that the drop of its name would mean anything to anyone. It means everything to you, however, so asking after recognition isn’t a risk you’re willing to take.
You’re risking enough as it is.
As is usually the case, you’re the first to arrive. When you do, you ignore the dirt that kicks up with every step and swirls around your bare ankles; and you keep walking until you reach your usual perch. The bare-bones, American-made t-top sits where it seemingly always has: on cinder blocks. It’s older than you by thirty years or so, but it groans with vigor when you grip hard to the frame, slide your foot over the exposed wheel hub, and hoist yourself onto the hood.
The bare skin on the back of your thighs is chilled instantly by the paint-chipped metal below you. It loses more and more of its smoothness the longer it sits out, exposed to the elements, but then again, so do you. Maybe that’s why this spot is a hard-fought favorite of yours.
Your crows’ nest, your perfect vantage point. A place to sit and play look-out while your eager eyes scan the driveway ahead.
You hear him before you see him, but that’s purposeful. Hoseok kills the headlamp on his motorcycle before he comes anywhere near the junkyard — just in case, baby. The rumble of his four-stroke engine is one you can feel in your stomach long after he shuts it off. Even when he parks that pristine, second-hand Hyosung somewhere only he’d be able to find it again. Still, when he finally steps under the yellow glow of the street lamp — your only source of light, save for the moon — and he’s all you see.
Hoseok keeps his pace casual as he makes his way to you, but his anticipation is visible in his posture. He’s swallowing words, based on the blatant twitch of his jaw. Always clenched to keep from calling out to you, as if the abandoned area wasn’t chosen for its ability to keep your secrets.
With much more ease than you, he jumps and pulls himself up to the car hood to meet you. The metal creaks under the weight of his body, but when it hovers over you, it’s a sigh of relief. A millisecond can’t pass by before he cages your head in between his arms — palms pressed against the dusty windshield — and swoops down to capture your kiss.
“Missed you,” he mumbles against your lips. His tone is low, hushed, and yet still sandpaper-course in a way that screams I mean it. The distance at which his limited words keep you is contrary to the way he holds you — close to the chest like your feelings are as fleeting as moments like this, gently as if you’ll break apart in his hands.
Like he loves you.
Your fingers instinctively thread themselves in his wind-swept hair — no helmet, no surprise there — and now it’s his turn to sigh. Hoseok tries to pull away, likely to gaze at you the way he always wants to, but you claim his bottom lip between your teeth and refuse to let him — this — go.
It sounds so silly without full use of his mouth:
“Baby,” he warns.
You release him with a smirk, brushing the tip of your nose against his. There’s enough fondness in his eyes to drown in and you would, in a heartbeat, if time was ever on your side.
“Good girl.”
The delicate, cuban-link chain around his neck glints in the half-light. Little slivers of silver dance across your own collarbone as it sways in the space between your bodies. A little constellation, guiding you North from your southside trap to a home you can’t have.
You, who can never seem to leave well-enough alone, run the thin, interlocking rectangles between the tips of your thumb and middle finger. You know you shouldn’t, but you pout, “You’re late.”
Hoseok’s expression says more than he does. You hear, “I know,” but you see, “I didn’t have a choice and I never will.”
He grunts when he sits up onto his knees. Wordlessly, he spills over your side and collects into a puddle in the space next to you. Once he settles, he stares up at the sky. You know he’s focused on something even further away.
“Did someone follow?” You ask gently.
Hand slipping easily into his, your fingers interlock. Links in a chain. Never an accessory to be worn in public.
Hoseok’s mouth pulls up slightly at one corner; and you know what that looks means. It means twenty minutes down the drain, shaking a tail before he can make his way to you. It means that, next time, you may need to find a different hiding spot.
The arm furthest from yours is draped over his abdomen. He moves it, and you move to hover in the space he’s cleared for you. Anchored with your knees on either side of his hips, you cup his jaw with the hand not holding his. For you, he lets himself soften, leans into the warmth of your palm.
You don’t normally say the obvious out loud, but reality doesn’t always stay in the cage you try to lock it in. “We’re playing with fire.”
“In another life,” Hoseok replies wistfully while his fingernails scratch — affectionately, teasingly, cautiously — down the expanse of your bare thigh. “We were arsonists.”
When he kisses you a second time, it’s enough for you to forget where you are. No longer in a junkyard on the outskirts of town, no longer on opposite sides of a line in the dirt, no longer trying to shove flowers into the front of a shotgun.
It’s enough.
It’s routine. You hike up the hem of your dress while he unzips his black jeans. Those are pushed down while your thong is pushed to the side; and so is the thought that this is the most of him you can have. You don’t get all of him, can’t lave your needy tongue over all of him, because it’s not safe to love him with all the layers cast aside. It’s practical, promotes a quick getaway in the event one is needed.
It’s enough, you think again, like repetition will make it true.
It’s perfect. Both of you keen when he enters you. Your thighs tremble; your walls grip him tight as they reacclimate to the stretch his cock demands. Hoseok notices your rapid blinking when you settle down on him. He knows without having to ask, kisses you through an ache that isn’t physical at all. It, like him, stays where it’s kept: in the left side of your rib cage.
“Shit,” he grunts. “Feel so perfect, baby — fuck.”
You roll your hips against him, taking him all the way and dragging the curve of his cock over that secret spot inside you. Aren’t they all? His fingernails leave impermanent, crescent indents in your thighs. You try not to care that the moon looming overhead is unapologetically full — and present every night.
There’s a newfound desperation in the way Hoseok clings to you. He digs the heels of his boots into the Stringray’s hood, hands pulling you down onto his cock while he fucks upwards into you. It drives him insane when you swirl your hips with him buried inside you, so you do, smirking like the devil.
You burrow into his neck to leave wet, open-mouthed kisses on any hint of skin you find. As you do, your fingers return to his hair and tie themselves off. If you chain yourself to him this way, maybe you can stay this way.
A quick nip at his neck unearths a groan that makes your cunt flutter around him. Tragically, no sign of you or your teeth is left behind on the side of his throat. Still, you kiss it better, whispering, “Could fuck you like this forever, baby.”
“Oh, my love,” his breath is hot against your ear when he chuckles darkly, “You hear the way your pussy is gushing all over my cock? You won’t last forever.”
His thrusts deepen. Hoseok is dead-set on unraveling you, thread by thread.
“In fact —”
Your teeth pinch his lobe. Hoseok snaps his hips forcefully in response, and your gasp echoes over the rusted squeak of a worn-out suspension. It briefly overpowers the muted slap of his pelvis colliding with the underside of your thighs. It doesn’t compare with his breathless laugh, though, not by a long-shot.
“Little vampire,” he chides you with a grin that takes effort. You mewl when his fingertips press bruises into the flesh of your ass. “Don’t think you’ll last another minute.”
Hoseok is a lot of things; and while frustrating is one of them, wrong rarely is.
It’s white hot, the uncontrolled pleasure burning through your core, and your vision matches when your wildfire orgasm ignites. Fingers searching for purchase grip tight to his jacket. Your heavy head dips forward as you cry out. Like always, you fall apart at the seams over him.
Slumped against him, he envelopes you in his arms as he fucks straight through your high and into his. Spent in every way that matters, you can’t fight off the sob that starts in the pits of your chest and crawls out of your mouth. The shiver down your spine can’t be blamed on the wind.
“Hey,” Hoseok murmurs, petal soft, “Baby, no, don’t cry.”
He takes your face in your hands and leaves you no choice but to look at him. With concern wearing creases into his forehead, he smatters kisses on every part of your crestfallen face. He whispers promises between each as he goes.
It’s okay — We’ll figure this out — I love you — We’ll be alright, you and me — I love you.
And even if it’s not all true, it’s enough.
Enough to keep you going.
Enough to glue your broken pieces back together.
Enough to keep you both from noticing the faint hum of an engine in the driveway.
