currently reading Dumb Witness by Agatha Christie! here are my current thoughts in a nutshell:
it’s kind of giving conservative grandma??
like, yeah, this was written in the 30s; pretty self explanatory.
i really like christie’s storytelling, i do. it’s just this book feels like her shading on the younger generation for,, idk, not being traditional or something?? which really does feel like something every younger generation faces (times really don’t change)
for the last 12 chapters i read, im just being constantly reminded about how emily arundell’s niece married a Greek doctor and how dreadful it is. like my bad, sorry this dude isn’t ENGLISH ENOUGH FOR YOU?? yall are just jealous they got good food okay
and let’s not forget there’s a slur in the book💀
literal jumpscare when i opened the table of contents.
but then again, just looking at my older copy of And Then There Were None makes me wonder why i’m surprised
UPDATE: Just finished the book! i’m surprised i got through it that quickly. anyways, here are my thoughts!
i thought the plot was interesting. i thought it was pretty cool how upfront everyone was abt how they wanted emily’s money since it shows that none of them can be completely trusted.
like everyone was after the same thing, for different reasons, but only ONE of them actually committed to it.
and let’s not forget the constant reminder of good old “english-breeding.” it’s not said a lot, but it’s something i notice popping up in the book from time to time.
like goodness gracious woman, please stop. describing others as “well bred” makes them sound like a horse freshly groomed
anyways, i think this is the first time i got introduced to hastings? i didn’t even know he was a reoccurring character and a friend of poirot since i’ve only read Murder on the Orient Express and And Then There Were None.
so you can imagine my confusion when i skimmed through random pages and noticed it was from someone else’s perspective.
but their dynamic is pretty cool! i kind of see it as like poirot doing his usual detective stuff and it going like:
poirot, lying to get some answers:
hastings: you are crazy, y’know that?
poirot: not crazy enough to kill, though!
well that’s how i see it anyways. i do think it’s cool that seeing through the lens of hastings does make things more fun. like this silly guy is as clueless as me
and he kind of vocalizes the audience? kind of? that’s how i saw it during the times he tried convincing poirot that the ball incident was genuine
but yeah it was okay. i might read the first book of the series because i just found out poirot is a refugee or smth?? like i need to know what’s up with that
so yeah, that’s my thoughts!

I feel like that since Tails was raised by Sonic, he'd downplay his own trauma out of instinct. So much that it concerns everyone but Sonic, who doesn't notice that well since it's the same attitude and wordplay he uses. Ex: "People used to try to cut off my tails all the time, just made me fast enough to keep up with Sonic haha!" Like no baby that's badddd.
i’ve always seen tails as someone who just doesn’t even want to think about his past. he doesn’t want to talk about it, he doesn’t want to acknowledge it. it’s behind him and he has a brand new life now. a better life
i think he’d only downplay it to a) get people to worry about him less and b) to get out of talking about it.
to me, that’s partially why he drowns himself in project after project. he does love tinkering, but it also keeps his mind busy (especially after the war when he’s had six whole months to do nothing but think)
idk tho that’s just me. i think maybe he made nonchalant comments when he was younger (ex: “i learned to swim when i was pushed into a river”) but as he gets older, it starts to weigh on him more and more so he’d just rather think about anything else

zoro not having a big revelation about luffy being a god, just silently digesting the information and realising that oh, this changes so little because luffy has been his god since the day he met him. all that’s different is the accuracy behind his devotion, and how everyone sees it as well as him, nothing more.
or maybe it shifts something in the air, zoro doesn’t react outwardly but a rift appears. a rift between an atheist who rejects the idea of a god and the settling knowledge that he has unknowingly worshipped one all along. and only in luffy’s refusal of the title and worship, the firm denial of becoming a ‘figure’ or a ‘hero’ does zoro continue to allow himself his unwavering faith. because luffy may never want to be a hero, but he has never minded being his crew’s saviour.
maybe he would react with pride, because luffy embodying a god was a journey. gear 5 may be nothing more than a representation of the feat of strength they have achieved through an uphill struggle. luffy has reached the level of a god, and nothing more matters than the fact he is still luffy, and he is more impressive than ever.
maybe zoro feels relief and gratitude, the first time he has ever thanked a god. because whatever luffy’s connection is to nika, he is still alive as a result. that awful moment in onigashima when the world stopped spinning, fallen off its axis, but ah, the drums of liberation beat in his heart, and luffy is okay. maybe he thanked the god that's intertwined with luffy, appreciation filling his chest.
maybe luffy becomes zoro’s god even more than before, and we see an outward reverance. maybe he acquires his own relationship with nika, who interconnects with luffy- never a follower when it comes to a god but so easily, so perfectly falling into place when following his captain. maybe he finally found his god, because his adoration for luffy would not falter in the face of anything.
i can’t wait for zoro’s reaction to nika and luffy, whatever it may be. will it be everything or nothing at all? how do you begin to predict the shock and the subsequent reaction to his captain, his lifeline, his world, being a god. it’s an incomprehensible experience, and i know whatever his reaction is will be the perfect one.

It is truly crazy to me that you can see the exact moment that Dean’s view of Cas changes in 9x22.
Like imagine you’re Dean. Imagine your best friend has been continuously making questionable (and even bad) decisions and keeping them from you either to “protect” you or to keep from hurting your feelings. Imagine that you’ve begged him not to do this but he feels so genuinely that he’s right and he begs YOU to trust him, only for you to be right like you thought and for the cycle to continue. Imagine caring about him so much that you keep trying and trying to forgive him and put your faith in him, but a lifetime of trauma and disappointment keeps you from fully being able to forget.
Now imagine that guy has gone and done it again. He’s making questionable decisions and he’s not telling you about them but you’ve discovered it, and now he’s forced to explain himself and let you in on it. Imagine thinking huh, this seems too good to be true, idk about this but maybe I can help him, maybe I can be trusted enough to help do this? And then the guy’s new best friend says she doesn’t like you, you can’t be trusted, the only way to save everyone and keep their loyalty is for your guy to kill you.
In your mind you beg him not to, but deep down you know he’s never chosen you, not completely. He’s always chosen family, which you can sort of understand because you’d always put family first too. And the betrayal and hurt is so clear on your face.
But then he doesn’t. He refuses to hurt you, even if everyone is telling him that it’s the only way, even if he’ll lose their trust and support, because he’s already broken his trust with you and it’s not worth doing again. For once he trusts YOU. He chooses you.
He chooses you, and he doesn’t even say that he’s sorry.

I’m so interested to know how other people perceive the team and Daisy’s arc in the beginning of season 4. I feel like I’ve seen a lot more of the “I’ll never forgive the team for how they treated her in S4” sentiment recently, which is interesting because I’ve never taken that perception away from that storyline at all.
Did the team say or do hurtful things? Yes, for sure. (I usually see the aforementioned comment on videos on that one scene with Daisy, Mack and Fitz)
But does Daisy also do and say hurtful things? I honestly think so.
That’s what makes that part of the season so phenomenal to watch, story wise. There is not black and white, good or bad, there just is. That is the reality of grief, that is the reality of mental health struggles, that is life.
There are no “right” answers when coping with the impossible, honestly. I think there are healthy and unhealthy ways to handle things, sure, but it’s not really a moral issue, on its face.
I mean, between the team and Daisy there are some rough interactions. Fitz is certainly a little hypocritical when he’s criticizing how Daisy handles things, given that he wouldn’t have reacted well if it had been Jemma. But He has been there for Daisy, up until this point at least, with Ward, her powers, they’ve been through a tremendous amount together. He feels abandoned and, yeah, he’s expressing it in a less than ideal way. But he cares. You know he cares about her. He and Mack wouldn’t be so angry if they didn’t care.
Mack is upset when he finds out Yo-Yo’s stealing the bone pills for her because 1) he’s been lied to for months, and 2) more importantly, it makes it seem that Daisy doesn’t trust him enough to directly come to him for help. That’s the thing. He would’ve helped her, probably given her anything she needed medically. She never needed to get Yo-Yo to steal any of it. It’s frustrating, it hurts. Mack is genuinely a deeply loving person, you know it’s killing him to not be able to get through to her.
Everyone on that team wants to help her, more than anything. They are begging her to let them in. I mean, lest we forget Coulson gave up his fucking job, in part, to keep chasing any lead he has on her.
When blaming the team for the rockiness at the beginning of season 4, you’re completely ignoring the fact that Daisy is actively running from them the entire time. She doesn’t want them to find her, and I really get it, honestly I do. I deal with things the way she does, radio silence, isolation, running away, being avoidant, self destruction, etc, etc.
Who could blame her, honestly? The anger and the self hatred and the guilt and the grief. Lord knows I’d take off, shut myself out. How do you even begin to manage that kind of pain, especially when it’s still fresh?
Well, you manage it any way that you can. For Daisy that means trying to atone for all of the pain she caused, which, are also things that caused her pain. Especially at the beginning of the season, it doesn’t matter how much she’s told that she is forgiven. Lincoln was at peace with his decision to sacrifice himself, Mack forgave her for hurting him while she was under the influence of Hive. Nobody is directly blaming her, except for herself. To try to heal from the pain she is in, would mean being able to extend herself grace, mercy. The only person who needs to forgive her, is herself. And she just- can’t.
She believes that all she does is hurt the people around her, which is what she is grasping onto to justify hurting herself. The hard truth of living that way is that when you’re stuck in your own, self harm, self hatred, shame-spiral is that you are the only person who can break out of it.
That’s a huge part about what I love about the storytelling of this arc. It’s genuinely some of the best mental health representation I’ve seen in a show like this.
Obviously, mental illness is not your fault. Being stuck in a bad place is not your fault. Daisy is not at fault for her grief. Her descent into isolation and a self-hatred, suicidal, shame-spiral does not in any way mean that she is a bad person. But there’s only so much another person can do when it comes to a battle that is completely contained within your own brain.
The team never stopped caring about her. Coulson, May, and Yo-Yo, specifically, never gave up on her. That’s important. She would’ve most likely been dead if they had stopped giving a shit about her. That’s significant.
But they’re not mind readers.
To go back to the scene with Mack and Fitz too. I think that scene is really important because it’s Daisy being confronted with the reality that her actions, her running away, isolating herself, really is hurting the people that love and care about her. She runs away to protect them from that very reality, of course, but how could they know that?
She doesn’t want them to care, and she hopes that if she just pushes them hard enough, if she bares her metaphorical fangs, they’ll stop. She’s accepted being alone, she’s accepted her own self destruction, because even if it hurts them at first, even if she’s absolutely miserable, they’ll be safe. Inside, she’s unwilling to admit that she needs them, and she’s acting in a way that allows her to avoid the cognitive dissonance of her actions (i.e. yo-yo stealing the pills they’d willingly give her if she asked).
But the fact that she’s hurting them doesn’t push them away. It just makes everything hurt more for everyone. She wants to embody that hurt, she’s cannibalizing her self to try to take on that pain but it doesn’t make anything better.
This storyline is not a case of right and wrong, if anything it’s an antithesis to it. It’s about how the ambiguity of life and grief and mental health are like tangled strings, messy and knotted, it’s about the love and effort and dedication it takes to hang on to/fight your way back to the people that love you, it’s about the strength it takes to carry on and forgive yourself, and, as May tells Daisy once she comes back, it’s about that: “you can’t choose who cares about you.

I mean no ill will but every time people in the EAH fandoms talk about the “original” stories the characters are based on I feel like this
Tumblr media
“In the original Snow White-“ “In the original red riding hood-“ We! Don’t! Know! The! Originals! We may be able to track the first instance of it being written and/or published but we don’t know the original because 90% of the time the fairy tale was originally spread orally. Like, for example, while Charles Perrault’s Little Red Riding Hood was the earliest known printed version we can trace earlier versions of from way before. The Brothers Grimm may have been the first to write down the Hansel and Gretel story but they themselves sourced it to various tales from the region they lived, and a folklorist propositions that the tale may have emerged around the Late Middle Ages.
And that’s not even accounting for these fairy tale authors writing down their versions with an agenda or bias. Perrault’s version of Red Riding Hood was a cautionary tale about predators so Red dies at the end, while earlier traces of the tale had this variant as well there were variants where Red escapes by tricking the wolf. In the Brothers Grimm’s first editions of Snow White and Hansel & Gretel, it was the protagonists biological mothers who served as antagonists and they were changed to be Stepmothers because the Brothers held certain beliefs and values about motherhood.
There are only a handful of characters whose fairy tales have actual ‘original’ versions; Cedar (Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi), the Wonderlandians (both Alice books by Lewis Carroll), Nina, Meeshell, and Crystal (all fairy tales written (not collected) by Hans Christian Andersen), and Rosabella (Beauty and the Beast by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot). Also probably Duchess with Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, but there’s whole discussions and theories about its origins and the libretto it was based on (I personally would consider it the original but, y’know, opinions opinions).
But also. Do the original or earliest versions of these tales matter all that much? They can be good bases on what we can guess would be the characters’ destinies but in Ever After High, we know that the stories aren’t entirely set in stone. Characters who should’ve died were able to live and have offspring, like the Candy Witch. Much like how the fairy tales change and adapt in real life, they do so in the Ever After High world. “Ramona will have to eat Cerise” “Hunter will have to kill Ramona” maybe. Or maybe not. Red Riding Hood and Professor Badwolf are living examples of playing through the story without either of the major characters dying. Apple’s hair is blonde despite Snow White’s hair traditionally being black, Cedar is cursed to tell the truth despite lying being one of Pinocchio’s infamous traits. Are these divergences received well? No, but it’s not seen as the complete destruction of the destiny system until Raven outright refuses to play her part.
I kind of forgot where I was going with this lmao. Umm don’t treat the ‘early’ or ‘original’ versions of the tales like a set of rules I guess. Have fun like every other person who’s adapting a fairy tale (like the eah writers themselves lol). Go crazy go stupid. I’m very tired and yapping about nothing
