can’t help but think of how, if we choose to go by sirius’ characterisation as a private, arrogant teen who only lets a select few into his circle, sirius’ post-azkaban life just have been such an utterly humiliating experience for him.

especially OoTP. when he has all these near strangers in his childhood house, that he hated and loved and ran away from and couldn’t ever escape. if he spent his entire pre-azkaban existence building a cold and aloof persona, not letting people know what his home life had been like, then to have all of these people get a front row seat to it because of kreacher and portrait walburga’s shenanigans must have been near unbearable. to have the entire order, including snape whom he disliked and mistrusted, hear the kinds of names he’s being called.

not only does he have to deal with the retraumatisation of his childhood, but also the fact that he’s flayed open for everyone to see. it’s not only his freedom, innocence, dignity that has been snatched from him but his privacy also. it’s such a cruel thing to experience, on top of everything else.

to have literal children, his godson who he has been kept away from all this while, whom he presumably wants to be able to look up to him, to have him see into the deepest parts of his soul. to have to be so weak in front of him. not only is he subjected to such vileness but he also cannot do anything about it.

sirius has not had a moment of peace in all the time we knew him. it is indignity upon indignity that is heaped onto him. every other character has gotten a moment of respite but him. it fully breaks my heart.

I said this in the comments of someone else’s post, but I’m going to say this here. Taash identifying as non-binary is good actually, and in fact better than the dev’s making up some new term for them. Let’s get into it.

So for a bit of background, I’m non-binary and Thai. If you don’t know, Thai has specific terms for different gender-sexual identities, they’re quite old, they date back a few hundred years. However, the thing about culturally specific terms is just that, they’re culturally specific. The reason you use them is because you are tied to the culture in such a way that you gender-sexual identity cannot be disassociated from it. Because, to be clear, these terms are never just about your gender or sexual identity. They encompass a role you play within society itself.

For instance, in Thai culture we have tom/tomboys. These are AFAB folks who occupy a masculine societal role and date women. If you’re AMAB you cannot be tom. If you’re transmasc and feminine? You cannot be tom. If you’re transmasc and not attracted to women? You cannot be tom. If you’re transmasc and mostly date men? You cannot be tom. If you’re transmasc but don’t particularly feel like taking care of the girl you date, taking her out, being the ‘man’ in the relationship? You can’t really be tom.

Because the thing about culturally specific genders is that they come with a lot of rules. Being tom isn’t being non-binary. There are cis women who are tom, and there are non-binary people who are toms. You do not get eschew gender roles in these cases. You are quite literally taking one on. You have a role and place in society that has been made for you, and you are expected to carry it out.

Because of this, none of these terms are a one-to-one for other identities, and nor should they be. Being kathoey or hijra is not the same as being a trans woman or non-binary, and visa versa. You can be kathoey and not be trans. You can be trans and not be kathoey. Being aqun-athlok or any other specific term shouldn’t be either. The idea that it is, is more ahistorical and inaccurate than the word non-binary itself. Giving Taash some new, culturally specific term, would inherently tie them to a culture, and one perhaps that they didn’t feel apart of. Especially since Taash’s entire story is about struggling to figure out where they belong. Arguably the biggest issue with their story is that you have to make them decide, and fundamentally tying them to a term would’ve compounded that problem.

The reason I identify as non-binary and not a tom, is because I am not occupying some specific role in Thai culture. Despite living in LA, I rarely interact with other Thai people who aren’t my family. I do not live in a cultural context that would allow me to identify as a tom.

The thing about terms like non-binary, or trans, or agender, is that they’re meant to be acultural terms encapsulating the concept of truth to oneself and ones identity. Whereas culturally specific terms aren’t, they’re about the role you hold in society and where you fit in. It’s about your identity within a status quo. Taash is a character who is eschewing societal roles, and breaking the status quo, giving them those terms just wouldn’t work.

And finally? Using non-binary itself allows the writers to very specifically say where they stand. There is no space given to transphobes. You either accept that DA is queer-friendly or bust. And that’s a very important stance to make in an era where trans and non-binary folks are being actively targeted. There’s no ‘well Taash isn’t actually trans or non-binary they’re [insert term here]!’ Because people would’ve done that, we know they would’ve. This means people can’t do that. They have to just say that they have an issue with the term, and thus we can call them for what they are. Transphobes. Plain and simple.

So yeah, Taash’s identity does have nuance, it has a lot of it. And to be honest with you, I wouldn’t be surprised if Trick Weekes, a non-binary person whose wife is First Nations and thus from a group with culturally specific gender identities, knows about the difference between something like two-spirit and trans. And to be honest with you, using something like non-binary has nuance I doubt was actually afforded to Krem, considering they cast a cis woman to play Krem.

For all the qualities he possesses, one thing that always sticks out like a sore thumb for Michael Kaiser is his bed hair.

Something he was notorious for in his early years in Bastard München in fact.

Strands poking out left and right, refusing to be tamed with hands pressing down or going through them, he finds the solution to be dipping his head under the sink, or take a quick shower in the early mornings just so it will behave. Barely.

Lately though, he finds himself waking up rather refreshed. In a good mood, dare he says. It takes a little brain racking to sift the possibilities and narrow down until he finds the reason.

And return to it, make it his new routine.

It's not the hour of sleep he gets, as he has tasted. Nor the food he consumes in the evenings. Physical activities is a no, using blue light protection-- albeit helpful, but not for this particular reason.

It dawns on him one afternoon, by the window as a pair of eyes follow the trails of passing cars and the people in a rush, letting the mundane beauty of life bring a smile to your lips.

His final weakness has been ceasing and he has been getting better and more fruitful sleeps on the nights you stay. Or at least loiter long enough at his place.

Catching word of his complaints one time and acting on that maybe-- or something entirely different, purely driven by that 'agape' you so like to talk about; you've made it a near routinely habit to comb through his hair at nights.

Sometimes you'll bring with you a brush you've brought over specifically for this purpose, you gently comb through his hair, holding sections of it with one hand and brushing with the other. All the while entertaining whatever it is he tells you- be it a genuine conversation that has held you both on a curious chokehold or simply to make fun of your wavering resolve against him.

You just chuckle at the latter, and he can feel you shake your head lightly. Not even a claim of it is nothing personal nor special. You2ve long dropped fighting wars you seem unworthy and instead saving oxygen for yourself when it comes to Kaiser.

The following peace of the night always proves you were right to do so.

Sitting with your legs stretched, scrolling through your phone or pupils rushing word after word on boney paper, you usually reserve one hand to him then, letting your fingers dip in and slowly brush. Sometimes you'll catch a wayward strand and play with it, sliding your hand down over and over, feeling all its textures and the angles it's been bent and broken at between your nails.

A motion he has seen you do often, now passed onto him. Something that increases once you get yourself one of those page holders.

Not that he is complaning.

Else he wouldn't be resting his head to your head and let you gently guide him wherever you wish every night. No yanking or tugs, just the sounds of your breaths in sync and shuffling of pages as your hand remains in its spot. Until his breathing slows down and soon his head drops, at which you carry with your hand and place on a pillow, careful not to jolt him awake.

He notices the changes to his shower products but makes no sound. After a week or two though, you let out a content sigh with how silky smooth his hair feels with each brush.

It does catch the two of you off guard though one night, when it's been later than your usual and you're still in bed with him-- no longer his bed, it hasn't been for a long time now.

The same lull of something sweet and sound has been weighing down on his eyes. A feeling he long stopped trying to name and simply accepted as your agape.

As sleep begins to embrace him, he feels a disturbance, and feels your hand dropping by the side. Before he can shoot you a glance for this absurd pause, your fingers find his cheek and softly scratch at the skin there, then by his jaw.

Kaiser freezes on the spot, eyes wide awake and no trace of sleep left.

Your hand halts a second after when you feel his skin strain under your touch. With the realization dawning on you a little later, you break into laughter-- further confusing the man who's still between fighting the instict to lean against your touch and just shooting dirty glares at you for such an act.

"Sorry!" you yelp in between laughs. "I think this whole ordeal began to feel too much like spending time with my cats--"

(and, well) you keep on talking, trying to explain or prove something, maybe make light of the situation when you realize he has been uncharacteristically silent. Yet all Kaiser hears in that moment is your voice chanting "my, my, my!" in his head.

He mutters a grumpy "whatever" later, his back falling back onto the comfort of his pillow, but never once telling you to never do it again.
