what would you recommend as a first Fire Emblem game to play? do i just pick up the latest one, or does an older one capture the True Fire Emblem Experience(tm) better? sorta like Super Metroid still being my absolute favorite of that series…
iiiiiinteresting question, huh! it probably depends somewhat on what you think you'll like / care about the most in a Fire Emblem game?
my personal first FE game was Sacred Stones & i think that's still a really good place to start. the spritework is *gorgeous*; i personally think it's the visual peak of the series. it's got the core "old-school" FE gameplay but with lots of nice quality-of-life improvements (as compared to e.g. something like FE4 or FE7), and the story is my second-favorite in the series after the Tellius games—just a good core emotional core with really well-drawn characters and support conversations.
the drawback is that it's on GBA, so if you don't have one of those lying around (or some other handheld to play it on), you're stuck playing it on an emulator on a computer, which i think hampers the enjoyment somewhat—like, i played a lot of that game in "in-between" moments, while on the bus, etc, and it was really excellent for that. also: it's on the easier side! which i didn't mind; i find the FE game loop enjoyable both when i'm just cruising through baddies AND when i'm having to tightly & rigorously strategize every move. but i know a couple people who stopped playing because they found it too easy & got bored
i do think the Gamecube/Wii FEs (Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, aka the Tellius games) hold up really well. obviously i am a little insane about them *stares at fanfiction output* and thus clearly biased, but the character writing is shockingly good & rich (sometimes despite itself, lol), and the gameplay's real fun! reasonably challenging while not making you want to throw your controller across the room (unless you opt into lunatic you mad lad!). i do think they're a little ugly though lol. rip. also, if you like PoR enough to play RD, you'll find RD... uneven. it's uneven in ways that mostly delight me, but like, yeah it's suffering a little from "we're telling like four different storylines with a HUGE cast & jerking you around between them a bit" so it interrupts the usual "smooth progression of your carefully-curated army" gameflow for something more like "wow, hope you're looking forward to saying BYE FELICIA to all your old dudes & putting down a random rebellion in Crimea for exactly five chapters & then doing something else entirely."
those games are my personal faves though and. i will always tell people to start with them. in principle. but you should decide if you trust me lol
a WHOLE lot lot of people got started with Awakening, and the core gameplay in that one is VERY fun. about halfway through, if you're sufficiently clever at assigning abilities, the game becomes a little too easy to "break," but it's an enjoyable ride the whole time. it also introduced a LOT of the quality-of-life improvements people now take for granted in modern FEs (you can choose to disable permadeath; UX is much nicer; etc). so if dealing with some old-school cruft is unpalatable to you, you'll definitely want Awakening or newer.
unfortunately the writing in Awakening is, uh, not great, lol. there's two generations of characters you're playing as, and the first generation is just... not very interesting! very one-note and tropey! storyline is nonsense! the second-generation characters are a little more fun but overall i found the main plot's incoherence + the plethora of dull characters meant that i found the story very forgettable.
i think the writing in Conquest/Birthright is similarly weak but i do have to say, if you want to powergame and optimize stats and get REALLY SWEATY GAMEPLAY NERD about it, Conquest can't be beat. best map design in the series, extremely challenging, etc
and then there's the massive fandom juggernaut known as Three Houses lol. of the "modern" FEs, this game contains the most Stuff I Like About Fire Emblem. the storyline's a lil jankier than e.g. the Tellius storyline, but still has plenty of fun stuff to chew on, and even if you don't some of the 3-4 storylines offered, there's a pretty strong chance you'll resonate with at least one of them. and the gameplay is *fun*, lots of QoL improvements, reasonably snappy...
...but it does have a somewhat bloated, "AAA-gamification" feel. visiting the monastery between EVERY SINGLE FUCKING CHAPTER to do "home base"-y stuff gets old fast. and also, the gameplay starts to drag some as you go along... a campaign takes like 40-50hrs iirc, and near the end, i usually find myself going like "jfc i don't WANT to do these three skirmish battles before i go onto the next one... but i need to because it's the Objectively Optimal Thing To Do... why is this game making playing it so annoying," lol. also, the writing, while reasonably solid... could've been reduced by like 50% and probably been *stronger*? most "old-school" FE games only had 3-5 support conversations per unit, and that was generally enough to give a good sense of the character without Overwhelming With Pointless Chatter. but so many characters in Three Houses have *so much more* text than that and it just starts feeling like.. a chore... to go through... especially when in practice i won't even like all those conversations... so yeah idk
tl;dr if you have slightly old-school sensibilities, get Sacred Stones; if you want a "modern" feel, get Awakening or Three Houses; if you want to make Lua Internetperson happy, personally, you should grab Path of Radiance :P

Would you maybe be willing to go over the process of tagging on ao3? I've never used it before so I can figure out most of it but the entire posting process is new to me
Of course!
If you don’t mind, I’m just going to cover all of it, because you aren’t the first person to ask this.
So- tagging!
In simple terms, tags have the same purpose on AO3 that they do on Tumblr. They’re to inform you of the content, summarize and warn, and to help organize the search system. They can be complicated, and daunting, but can also be largely unique if one so chooses. I’ll explain how in a minute!
By adding a tag, you are inserting your work into a list, or a system, of other works that fall under the same category. For example: if you are writing a Derek Hale/Stiles Stilinski work, and you tag that relationship, the work will show up when you search that relationship. It’s one of AO3’s best features, and a way an author can gain popularity in a fandom.
Now, starting at the top of your AO3 form, we have the rating. Now, I like to think of your rating as a movie rating. Everyone has a little bit of a different view on these, but for our collective purpose of explanations, let’s use this standard guide.
The first one is general audiences. This is a PG rated movie. Minimal language, some sexual and adult jokes that might fly over someone’s head, and little to no violence. You would let your 11yo cousin read this fic and not be concerned.
The next is teen and up audiences. This is your PG-13, TV-14. We’ve got curses going around, but not all of them. Sexual jokes, light sexual content that probably doesn’t go very far. If there’s violence, it’s Marvel movie, see blood but no gore style.
Mature is where things get interesting. Say whatever you want, have the smut scenes, and shoot outs in the alleyways. Children aren’t allowed into this R-rated movie, but we all know it’s for the 15+ girlies who are reading on their computers in the dark.
And explicit is anything goes, basically. If you’re reading an explicit fic, and you get surprised by what you see, that’s a you problem. ‘Tis the smuttiest of the smut, the most hardcore violence and angst, and characters run rampant in their actions and words.
And then we have the warnings! These are what I consider to be the most important, because a lot of these things are triggers. It’s pretty self-explanatory, as you can pick and choose anything that applies.
Fandoms is also pretty self-explanatory. You use AO3’s list of fandoms, and click whatever fandom you’re writing for. For this exchange, you would type Newsies, and select the options and forms of the show you took inspiration from.
Categories is more confusing, I think, primarily because one can never decide if you want to click every button that applies, or just the important ones. In my personal experiences, I tend to just click whatever option represents the main ship I’m writing for, and then make sure I tag anything that doesn’t fit that category in the relationships tags. You are definitely free to select everything, though!
Relationships is pretty important, just for information purposes. Most people search AO3 through specific relationships they want to read, and so I make sure to tag everything I can, just for algorithm and accessibility reasons. You can tag the romantic relationships (the ones with the / between the two character names), platonic relationships (the ones with the & between the character names), and everything in between, depending on how you want your fic viewed, and how you want it sorted in the tagging system (by this, I mean if you want it put in the list of ‘x’ (ex. Harley Keener/Peter Parker) works, falling under a specific tag). And if you want viewers to be aware of the different relationships, especially the romantic and platonic ones, always double check that you have selected the right tag (again, for romantic there’s a /, and for platonic there’s a &).
Characters are also important, but I want to stress that you do not need to tag all of the character that appear in your fics. I would simply tag the ones the work focuses around, or that have an impact on the story. It will take you forever to tag everyone if you’re writing a longer story.
Additional tags is another very confusing thing. A lot of people view them as similar to Tumblr tags, like I said earlier, and this is where you can have some originality, like the Tumblr tags. When I am adding additional tags, I will read the story as I tag it, and make sure I add tags that apply to the important bits. You can keep it professional, with just the tags that will help get you more readers, and trigger warnings; or you can have fun with it, and simply put your thoughts about the work there, as another summary; or you can do a mixture of both. I do a mixture, and will add tags that add the work to popular searches, and add a running commentary/summary as I do so. This part is completely up to you, and you can explore what you want to put by typing random letters or names (things will pop up by either most common or alphabetical order, depending on what you’re typing) into the search bar, just to see what shows. My main suggestion- and pretty steadfast requirement for this exchange- is that you make sure you have a tag for plot points that might be triggering for some. Other than that, the world is your oyster!
That’s it! Hope that helps! If you have any more questions, let me know!

11, 24, 48, and 57 for the fic asks!
11. Do you write scenes in order, or do you jump around?
I write in order! I've tried both ways, but I find writing in order helps me. It gives the narrative a natural flow, I guess? Plus I usually have certain scenes worked out first and I use them as waypoints to write to. I make exceptions if I know I don't have time/energy to get o a particular scene in that writing session and I'm worried I'll forget it. I also do sometimes change the order while I'm writing or after. But for the most part I write in order. As I've been experimenting more with non-chronological writing it's gotten a bit more complicated and so far it's been a mix of writing in the order I want things to appear (when I have that worked out) and writing the events chronologically as they happen and then moving them around.
24. How do you choose whose POV to write in?
Whatever feels right! Sometimes it's very instinctual, other times it's hard. Usually I choose the POV character by who has an inner thought I desperately want to include, and it gets tricky if there is more than one. If you look at older fanfiction, it used to be common to change POV many times mid scene and I absolutely hate it. I do like to change up POV (I have very few fics that stick with one the entire time and they're all petty short) but I always do it with a scene change. When I wrote safe travels I had a really hard time deciding between Hawkeye and BJ POV for their big climactic talk, so I found a way to write a break into the middle so Hawkeye could have the first half and BJ could have the second. I also tend to be biased a bit by which characters I get because their POV comes easily to me. You will see a lot of Hawkeye POV and Josh Lyman POV from me. But sometimes writing someone I don't write often is a really fun challenge and I end up enjoying it more! The Potter POV in safe travels was some of the most fun I had writing it. And the first two BJ POV scenes. It was my first time writing his POV and I was nervous about it but I had a ball and of course he's been giving me trouble since then. I also try to keep a balance when I use multiple POVs. hills like white elephants was originally going to be more back-and-forth between Margaret and Hawkeye and when it ended up being almost entirely Margaret, I almost cut the one Hawkeye POV scene just because I didn't like having just one. It stayed because I thought that moment of Hawkeye wondering if BJ figured out what he did but not asking was worth it. I also take advantage of only having to know as much as the POV character knows, but that rarely determines which POV I use.
48. Who is your favorite character to write for? Has this changed since you’ve started writing for that fandom?
This is surprisingly hard to answer. There are characters I write about the most, who are usually my favorite characters and the ones I feel most strongly and know the best. Those are Hawkeye for MASH and Josh for The West Wing. But I often find there are other characters I enjoy writing more, because I don't do it as much and it's different. So you could say it does change once I've written my faves a lot, I guess. Toby for The West Wing is in this category and for MASH it's probably Sidney.
57. How conscious are you about including symbolism or foreshadowing in your fics?
It really depends. I'd say I'm fairly conscious--I'm certainly writing foreshadowing into ghost AU, and the Hamlet symbolism in the play's the thing was obviously intentional, but a lot of it happens by accident and becomes conscious partway through the process. For example, in Wonderful, there's a scene where they're scrabbling across the rocks and Hawkeye keeps getting further ahead because he's been doing this all his life. The growing distance between them on the rocks perfectly symbolizes the growing emotional distance as they get on with their lives, and even more than that, it shows Hawkeye in his element and BJ not quite fitting. I realized that after I wrote it, and I did tailor it at the point. I wrote the rocks scene because I grew up spending summers in Maine and I've been scrabbling across rocks as long as I can remember. Even as a relatively out of shape adult, it's instinctive, and I really noticed this when my best friend came to visit and I was leaving her in the dust. This is even an image I've applied to Hawkeye and BJ before because I think it's funny. It ended up creating a lovely little bit of symbolism. I am trying to be more conscious about symbolism and I'm really enjoying it, but somehow I think the best symbols are always going to be accidents.
#thank you!!!!#ghost au foreshadowing is also dramatic irony because the reader obviously knows what happens#but it's all stuff like hawkeye can't wait to go home! bj wants to give hawkeye a hug!#haha sorry guys but neither of is ever going to get to do those things ever again :)

Coming in hot from the kotlc fandom, asking if you would be willing to rant about Sophie (In general or as the main character, you choose) because I saw your other rant and you raised some very good points. Especially the self insert oc. I'm still raging from the fact that she rejected Dex and /then/ kissed him to say "Hey, this is ultra mega delux proof that I don't like you"
Boy howdy you better believe I'm willing!!
Also thank you for the ask, this is the first one I've gotten like this and I'm so excited :D
So first of all, if anyone needs a recap of what I've already said concerning Sophie and her undeserved position of the main character, find it here: https://www.tumblr.com/blog/view/smoltolmuffin/685796011734712320?source=share
Sophie kissing Dex to prove she didn't actually like him:
Makes me think of that GIF. You know the one.
Yeah, that one.
First of all: WHO DOES THAT? Who even has the courage as a-- *googles this* 13(?)/14(?) year old to kiss somebody you might have a crush on?? Maybe elves are just Built Different™, but based on what we've seen of their emotions/encounters so far, they seem to function similarly to humans, so idk.
But seriously. Which preteen(???) girl actually goes "omg okay close your eyes i wanna try something" and then actually does it? And then actually stays in the same room as the dude she just kissed??? And then is casually like "huh. no that doesn't vibe at all, maybe we shouldn't see each other for a while"?
Idk but if it was me (which it wouldn't be, I'm not that brave), I wouldn't do it in the first place, and if I did for some reason, I'd immediately get the heck outta Dodge, if you catch my drift.
And it really wasn't fair to Dex either! (I could go on an entirely separate rant about how Dex is one of the most underrated, overlooked, underappreciated characters in KOTLC, but I'll spare Ye Olde Mutuals for now.) That poor boy really did have a puppy crush on Sophie. Imagine if your crush was like hmmm im gonna kiss you (experimental). You'd be stoked! And then your crush kisses you(experimental)!! You'd want to explode with happiness!!! And then your crush says "nah fam lol", and where does that leave you?
Sitting in the Friendzone with the rest of the fallen.
Not cool. I'll probably always hate Sophie for that.
Sophie in general as "the Gifted Kid"
The kid needs a break. In my opinion, her role as The Chosen One Who Is Not Like The Other Girls has gone to her head. Sure she's tired of the war, and sure she's sick of being so depended-on, but does that stop her from effectively flipping the middle finger at any (and all) authority and running headlong into more danger without telling people the plan? Heck, does she even HAVE a plan?? Because if she did then either I'm stupid (which is an entirely valid and possible option) or there isn't any plan, other than the extremely vague "defeat the Neverseen", WHICH, in my eyes, has dragged on FAR too long.
Give us the defeat of the Neverseen back in Everblaze. Give us a new threat--something else going on in the world besides "oh no. they're still here. oh no. time to not actually be able to end their terrorism, despite the fact that I am in fact Sophie Foster, the OP Fortnite Kid of literally every YA author's dreams. Or nightmares. Who knows."
Give us some other problem in the world! Give us something that doesn't require one (1) tween girl (how old is she at this point? i lost track??) and the boyband ft. some girls to go save the world yet again because of a COMPLETELY ORIGINAL TROPE, namely "all adults are stupid. ALL of them".
Some people could argue here (you know who you are and I love you :D) that Sophie has adequate reason not to trust the adults in the series, especially the Council, especially the Black Swan, especially-- oh wait. We're not trusting anyone. That's right, my bad. After giving Sophie a break, we're gonna give these tropes a break. Kay? Good. It's about darn time.
If we have to have a global war(?) going on, give me someone with experience (not Sophie!!) and a good place of mental stability (again, not Sophie!!!!) to be in charge of fixing the world's problems. Let an adult do it. Why aren't the adults doing it? SHANNON??? Each time I try to come up with an explanation for why the adults in this series are so incompetent, I get worked into a corner because? what are they doing? We haven't seen enough behind the scenes with the Council to make any speculations on "are they actually the bad guys or is Sophie just going through a particularly strong rebellious phase".
We could talk about Sophie being the leader of Team Valiant. And then right after that, we're gonna talk about how hard we cringed at that awful team name (YOU KNOW YOU DID. WE ALL DID.) I gotta agree with Keefe on this one-- Team Fancypants would've been better. Anything but Team Valiant, oh my GOSH.
It's really not fair that the OP kid gets to be the coolest. Fight me if you wish, but isn't it about time that some of our beloved side characters got some more attention? I'm mainly thinking of Dex here. Why can't Sophie take a backseat for once?
~~~
so i've tired myself out...
if this made enough sense and you'd like me to rant more please leave a comment saying so or drop another ask 💀, if you want me to lock myself in a closet and never do this again...
understandable, have a nice day
i just saw your post about how zuko’s redemption isn’t as well done as everyone thinks it is and like. holy shit my dude!! you put it into words!! i’ve always thought that the reason i didn’t like him was because he was woobified and acted like a shitty person i knew but like. fuck!! that’s exactly it!!! i loved that post
Hello there! Sorry for the late answer, and thanks for the ask!
I must admit, I'm not quite sure which post you mean x'D I have written quite a few pieces on my opinion regarding Zuko's redemption, but as my opinion on the subject is pretty much set in stone by now, whichever one you've read, I'm glad you agreed with it! :D
Tbh, while I understand, objectively, why people love his character arc, I really stand by the belief that a fair amount of people love what Zuko represents and symbolizes far more than they love his actual character. There's no denying that the messages intended through Zuko (you can overcome the trappings of your toxic past, you can choose to do better after you've made mistakes, you can grow out of twisted ideologies and sickening philosophies) are good and well-meaning (on the most part...). But there are so many loopholes, so many inconsistencies, so many moments that actually muddle his growth and make him soooo much more complicated than fandoms, official writers and even the creators seem to understand he is... and it's not the kind of complication that makes his arc better. If anything, it's the entire opposite thing, because more often than not, those inconsistencies actually make me question how much he grew and learned at all, and if what he's telling us he learned makes any sense with the process we literally saw him go through.
I definitely understand if part of your distaste for his character comes from personal experiences with people who resemble Zuko, that definitely can happen. There's one ATLA character I refuse to name names to avoid conflicts :'D who acts an awful lot like a very toxic person in my past. I do my best to set aside those misgivings because they're very much personal, but I 100% understand not being able to do it depending on how bad your experiences were, or how much you've healed from them. Still, if your bigger problem is the misfires in Zuko's character arc... I totally get you. If there's one sure way to make me skeptical about someone's opinions, it's when they say Zuko's redemption arc is the best one in the history of redemption arcs. I seriously hope to one day compile a big enough list of better redemption arcs to put those claims to shame xD I get it if it means a lot to people... but sorry-not-sorry, there are a lot of redemption arcs that are waaaaay better than his, and that address problems head-on and make the characters confront true consequences for their actions in ways Zuko never truly had to.
At any rate, I've pitched a tent in the ATLA impopular opinions corner since a very long time ago xD it's always great to know more people who think similarly, though! :D
#neuronary#sometimes I think I have left behind my problems with Zuko#(partly because I have also pitched my tent in a specific AU and getting me out of there is... difficult xD)#and so I try to be more open-minded about him#... then I see his fans praising him for things that make no sense and I realize nope#not gonna get over this not gonna change my mind#not in vain is he in my age-old overrated characters list#'tis the sad truth
My guy, can I just say that I LOVE your writing? Its absolutely amazing and wholesome! speaking of wholesome, could I maybe request the clones with an s/o who wants a child? Or maybe the clones as fathers?
Wow thank you, I'm flailing on the floor from these compliments! Glad to provide some wholesome content for the fandom in these trying times... #bringcrosshairhome
I just did a Clones with pregnant S/O request, so here's Clones as fathers...
Cody is a dutiful father. He takes the job seriously right from the start, seamlessly readjusting his life to include his child as if they'd always been there. He'll take any opportunity to teach his child all the important things, from hands-on tasks like fixing a speeder or shooting a blaster, to more abstract concepts like being polite to strangers and apologizing when in the wrong. When he has to choose work over home, he makes up for it with extra attention when he returns.
Rex is a super-dad. His kids look up to him their entire lives, believing he really is a superhero. Think Jack Pearson from This is Us. He'll dress up for tea parties, and listen to the same stories over and over, and chauffeur them and their friends around town, and help with homework, and lend them money for when they go on their first date.... He's tired all the time, but he never lets it show. He and his S/O are partners in this endeavor; their teamwork is admirable and enviable.
Wolffe is a private dad. He keeps his family life separate, that way he can be the tough leader he needs to be in battle, and then let all of that go when he returns home. He's a secret softie and only his S/O and child ever see that side of him. They have him wrapped around their finger; he knows this, and loves it. There isn't a single thing he wouldn't do for either of them. They are his world. He gets sentimental about a lot of things and doesn't like how fast his baby grows up.
Fox is a doting father. He'd spoil the shit out of his kids. Sneaking candy when their mom says no, buying the toy they secretly eyed in the store, letting them stay up late and watch him clean his armor. He gets in trouble with his S/O a lot, but he can't help it. He wants to give his kids the entire galaxy. He can discipline them when necessary, and because he only does so sparingly, his kids take it seriously and never act that way again. He thinks they are just perfect.
Fives is a proud dad. Everything his children do is amazing. He keeps every last drawing or craft they make for him. He recounts every milestone of their lives to his brothers. He cries over them a lot. He is just in awe of how they grow up, all their strength and potential and innocence, he just eats it up. He definitely wears T-Shirts that have puns of the word dad in it, so anyone who sees him knows who he is. It's the most important part of his life, far more than being a soldier.
Echo is a nurturing father. He is very concerned with the health and happiness of his child. He's more nervous when they're young, wondering if they're behind in their development or whether their runny nose is a sign of something more serious. He's more comfortable when they get older, letting them do more on their own. He's big on communication and uses little codewords. Like, Cover-fire means he needs them to just do as they're told. DMZ means they're free to speak their mind, no judgement. Retreat means they need to rethink their bad attitude and apologize.
Jesse is a hip dad. He doesn't try to be, he just is. He never really let go of that part of himself after becoming a father, listening to certain kinds of music or having a fun night out. He doesn't set a lot of rules; in fact, he openly allows certain things that other parents might balk at. He figures it's better for them to experience these things in the safety of their home, rather than doing it behind his back and getting hurt. His kids like their cool dad, they're never embarrassed.
Kix is an affectionate father. His favorite thing in the whole galaxy is coming home to his children tackling him with hugs and kisses. He might coddle in the early years, letting them sleep in his bed or carrying them around everywhere. But as they grow, he's more encouraging of their independence, so long as they still let him hug them whenever he wants. He's also obsessed with health; totally the dad who never lets them eat any sugar or watch TV if the sun's still shining.
Tup is a timid dad. He second-guesses himself a lot, wondering if he made the right decisions or said the right things to his child. He does his best to learn and catch on to the best way to go about things, but it seems as soon as he's finally comfortable, his child has grown up or moved on to the next phase and he has to start over. He is best during the quiet moments of his child's life: reading stories before bed, giggling during bathtime, comforting a broken heart...
Dogma is a responsible father. He prioritizes rules over all else, but puts a lot of thought and care into crafting them. And he's created a lot of rules for himself, too. Things like always wishing them good-night, even when he's away on missions. Or never expressing his frustration in front of them. He creates plenty of opportunities for them to earn privileges or other rewards. He disciplines firmly but fairly. He splits the child-rearing duties with his S/O evenly, as well.
Hardcase is a dorky dad. He's not as hardcore at home as he is on the battlefield, but he still has a lot of energy and releases it through corny jokes, silly antics, and other displays of tomfoolery. Think Phil Dunphy from Modern Family. He wants to be his children's best friend. He tries to keep up with all the trends and slang, which just makes his kids cringe in embarrassment. He's not the best with discipline, but he does get more serious if one of them is hurt or struggling.
Hunter is an interactive father. He will never be considered distant, oh no. He engages with his kid on every level, being a constant and dependable presence in their life. He talks to them as a baby even when they don't understand. He lets them tag along as a toddler, indulging in their curiosity. He checks in with them when they're older, having honest conversations about whatever is on their mind.
Wrecker is a playful dad. Life is an adventure and he's excited to take his children along on the ride. He'd have a lot of kids, filling his home with sounds of laughter and fighting and joy and tears. He'd encourage them to develop a hobby and would attend every competition, performance, etc. without fail. Even with so many to keep track of, he manages to make each one feel special, they all have an important place in the family and never get left out, not on his watch.
Crosshair is a protective father. He knows he's not the best with emotions, so he makes up for it by always having his child's back. Looking out for them. Keeping them safe. He'd teach them how to fight from an early age, going to shooting ranges or on hunts. It'll be their "thing," a way for them to quietly connect through the years. And heaven help the poor soul who ever hurts his little one. He will not hold back in defending their honor and squeezing out an apology.
Tech is a chill dad. He isn't bothered by much, so he keeps his cool through even the roughest stages of his child's development. This ends up creating a sense of stability for his family, they can always count on Dad to keep things steady and real. hello! your zutara posting today has finally motivated me to ask this question because I came to atla very late(last year, to be specific) and I Love It Very Much but am 1000% out of the loop as far as why what remains of fandom (at least that I've seen among my friends) is so very strongly zutara. I'm not opposed to it per se I just don't really know what has driven it to apparently be such a popular ship? can you help me understand and maybe convert me a little bit?
Hey!! Your ICON! :D I can try but I’m not sure how coherent I’ll be; however I AM sure someone a lot more competent will be willing to add to this. Either way, I’m glad you asked because my plan was to drag down as many people as possible with me.
*smacks the hood of zutara* this baby can fit so much mutual love and support!
This got so long, I’m so sorry. I don’t know how to put it under a cut on mobile and it already got deleted once so I’m scared to mess with it lol. Moving on.
I’m gonna start this with a disclaimer that im on mobile so formatting is tricky and I’m also really new to atla in that I only completed my first watch through in like 2019??? So some of my info is all just based on what I’ve picked up from Discourse 👀 so anyway the sparknotes version: zutara was wildly popular from the beginning. To the point where the atla crew internally disagreed on which ship should be endgame. (Ex. Bryke [showrunners] asked the writers to rewrite The Southern Raiders to make Zuko seem less ideal for Katara than Aang [which failed, depending on who you ask]; the animation team purposefully created a visual parrallel between Oma and Shu in the Cave of Two Lovers and Zuko and Katara in the catacombs under Ba Sing Se in the Crossroads of Destiny; etc.)
The ship was popular enough that Bryke actually chose to display zk fanart at a con for the sole purpose of mocking the fans, but that’s neither here nor there. The entire episode Ember Island Players, while a love letter to/parody of the whole show, was an opportunity to address zutara’s viability as a canon pairing (while, again, mocking zutaras for romanticizing that catacombs scene). Point is! It’s always been popular but with it not being endgame, there’s got to be something that’s given it staying power.
And that’s honestly got to do with three things: their dynamic, thematic cohesion, and potential.
(You know what... you know what, it’s four things. The fourth is they’re so aesthetically pleasing together and individually. Like, they’re just good looking people [specifically when they’re grown but they’re also cute kids] and that absolutely doesn’t hurt) (but it’s not the Point, it’s just nice to point out sometimes)
The dynamic is hard to get into without also looking at the canon pairings, but I think I can do that without unnecessary bashing. It’s just that part of the magic of zutara is really highlighted by what they give to each other that their other relationships don’t.
First off, it’s classic enemies to (would be) lovers. The absolute truest form of it. It’s not too different from how CS started out: a rogue antagonist with a job to do—but no personal vendetta against the future love interest—who is deeply and emotionally invested in his personal storyline (revenge/redemption) with little regard for how it effects other people after his entire life and genuine good nature are marred by suffering, and a fierce warrior girl with a strong moral compass and her own personal investment in stopping him (protect her family and save the world doing it). Obviously frustration and animosity grew between them by the nature of them being on opposing sides, but that just lends itself to the sweetness of their later reconciliation.
The thing is that while they’re wildly different on the surface (he’s a hot-headed prince of a fascist regime who is trying to capture the Avatar to please his father; she’s a nurturing daughter of the chief who is trying to protect and train the Avatar in order to topple his father’s throne) they find out that they have so much more in common both in their experiences and their personalities.
(What follows is an excessive use of the word “both” and I’m sorry about that)(I can edit it. I can do that. That IS an option............)
They both have an innate sense of justice that they are determined to see done (zuko, at the war meeting, sticking up for the Earth Kingdom kid when the guards torment his family, choosing not to steal from the pregnant couple despite his circumstances, abiding by his word to leave the SWT should Aang come willingly, etc.; katara, literally.... at any point). They both have pretty one-track minds at accomplishing certain goals once they’ve put their mind to it, regardless of a lack of support in that endeavor (it goes without saying I guess, but zuko’s entire hunt; katara’s determination to get the earth benders to fight back, her determination to absolutely destroy Pakku until he agrees to teach her, etc.). They both lost their mothers at young ages. Their worlds are war-torn and traumatizing to them both, if in different ways, but that ultimately forces them to grow up too quickly to be wholly independent individuals. They both have issues with their fathers (for WILDLY different reasons, but). They both hold extreme prejudices that they need to learn to overcome (which ties into thematic cohesion)(bit like Lizzie and Darcy in that way but magnified by a million). They’re both extremely emotional and empathetic—which can and often does result in loud outbursts. Katara’s a bit better adjusted and can temper her anger for longer than S1 Zuko can, but they both feel that anger deeply and have no compunctions expressing it (Katara is, usually, more justified, particularly in S1. Again, S1 Zuko is severely maladjusted but at the point when they could’ve feasibly become a couple, he’s so much better off with the way he carries himself). They both struggle with feelings of inferiority in their bending abilities when confronted with prodigal benders like Aang and Azula, but have the work ethic required to double down and become two of the most powerful benders in the three remaining nations. This is a little more minor but it is a parrallel that appeals to some shippers that they both have these alter egos in the Painted Lady (notably fire nation coded) and the Blue Spirit (water tribe coded) that are pretty different from who they are day-to-day and are useful in accomplishing a purpose that they as themselves cannot.
(I’m.... I just realized that this could potentially get very long. Should I have made a slide show with bullet points??????)
Anyway, similar. I know there’s more but there’s literally so much to love about zutara that I’ll drive myself a little crazy trying to compile all the ways they’re similar. (Just gonna say that at this exact moment I went back to add more similarities.... so okay then)
Once they’ve reconciled, we see how all of these things only lend themselves to a deeper intimacy together than they share with literally anyone else. There’s a steady partnership that positions them as the mom/dad of the gaang, while also providing the support necessary to allow the other to not have to carry so much responsibility. A lot of zutaras will point out how zuko is actually depicted doing the more domestic chores that are normally relegated to Katara once he joins the gaang, since the others in the group are two 12-year-olds and sokka. The one that sticks out the most is how he makes tea for the group and then serves them, while Katara is able to just relax with her friends around the fire. Fanon expands upon this a lot to Zuko helping with the laundry or the cooking or whatever else needs doing since he, as a once-refugee, is used to doing his own domestic tasks. Before Zuko joined, Katara was the one mothering everyone, sewing for them, cooking for them, etc. She’s always tending to the needs of the group, and that includes emotionally. She does the emotional labor for the gaang 99% of the time, but when she’s the one falling apart, she’s usually doing it alone and without the comfort that she normally provides for others. Until Zuko. And that’s before they’re even friends.
Which is WHY people romanticize the catacombs of Ba Sing Se so much. Katara is verbally attacking Zuko out of her own righteous anger but also her own prejudice when Zuko, surprisingly, chooses to be vulnerable with her. He’s been on a journey that’s opened his eyes a bit, but he’s never actively chosen to expose the rawest parts of his past to anyone. But for some reason he chooses to do that with Katara of all people. While she’s yelling at him. He sees her humanity, and for once can look past his prejudice and empathize with her. And this time, when she breaks down, she gets to be comforted. Katara normally talks about her mother when she’s trying to explain to someone else that she sees and understands they’re pain, as a form of comfort to them. Here, Zuko uses the exact same tactic. He sees her and he understands. And for zuko? He’s not being shut down. He’s allowed to articulate his pain regarding his mother without being ignored and made to internalize it, and he’s allowed to process how he feels about his scar out loud without being told that he deserved it. And then he lets her touch his scar, something we’ve seen him actively avoid before. He’s completely open to her and she’s completely open to him and all it took was one five minute conversation. She was about to use the little bit of Spirit water that she had, that she was saving for something Important, to heal the scar that still daily causes him pain just because they had, somehow, connected.
Plus there’s the whole parallel to the star-crossed lovers forbidden from one another, a war divides their people—
And then zuko messes up, he regresses, he gets what he wants and he HATES it. And the sense of justice he had as a child has been restored to him against his will and he can’t think of anything he wants to do more than the Right Thing, so he joins team avatar. Before he does that though, we get to see his relationship with Mai, which is where comparison really comes in. And what we see is Zuko, fresh off of his encounter with Katara in the catacombs, trying to be emotionally honest with Mai... and getting shut down and dismissed. Which is just how Mai is and it’s fine, but not for Zuko. Still, he keeps trying, and he keeps getting ignored or scoffed at or yelled at. Which is really a larger symbol for how he doesn’t fit in his old life anymore, but again that’s about thematic cohesion. He tries to articulate his anxieties about returning home, he tries to make romantic gestures, he tries to explain how morally conflicted he’s feeling—and Mai diverts to some kind of physical affection to shut him up and a parting comment that is pretty much always, in essence, “I don’t wanna talk about this.” So they don’t. On the other hand, once zuko and Katara are friends, we see him again emotionally distraught and caught up in his anxieties about facing Iroh, and it’s Katara who comes to him and listens to him and comforts and encourages him.
Similarly, we have Aang clamming up and getting uncomfortable whenever Katara shows any negative emotion, usually resulting in him making excuses or running away. Or, in the case of the Southern Raiders, lecturing her on how she needs to just let go of her anger about her mother’s murder. People have talked this episode to death and usually better than I ever could, so imma... keep it brief. There’s a serious disconnect between Aang and Katara in his ability to empathize with Katara and her needs that has her tamping down her vulnerability and amping up her anger. He tells her that he was able to forgive his people’s genocide and appa’s kidnapping (petnapping? Theft??), which is blatantly not true but also not an entirely equal parrallel to Katara’s situation, and continues making these little remarks throughout the episode. But it’s Zuko that Katara opens up to. It’s with him that she’s able to talk about the most traumatic day of her life, and it’s with him that she’s able to get the closure she needs, cementing their bond as friends and partners. This disagreement between Aang and Katara is then... never resolved. They just never bring it up and hear what the other is saying.
There’s a fic called The Portraits of Ember Island that has a line that so completely sums up the heart of the matter for why people love their dynamic. For context, zuko has woken up early to help Katara with the cooking and they spend the whole time just letting one another talk, and zuko stops to ask why she always just lets him talk. And so she stops to ask why he’s always helping, and it goes as follows:
There’s just... so much mutual support! Trust! Intimacy!! And it just continues like that from the Southern Raiders on, listening to each other, advising each other, watching each other’s backs! And then! Literally saving each other’s lives!! I will never be over the last Agni kai. Not ever. Zuko may have been willing to jump in front of lightning for anyone, but he actually did it for Katara. And in a show, that’s the thing that really matters. It’s a fulfilled trope usually exclusively applied to romantic pairings, and it ended up applying to Zuko and Katara. And then she ran out into the middle of a fight with tunnel vision just to get to him.
Also!! Also Zuko pushing Katara out of the way of the falling rocks at the Western Air Temple!! And Katara catching him as he fell from the war balloon that he fought Azula on!! Before they’re even getting along, they’re the ones reaching for each other. They come to this place of equal ground, as partners, who watch each other’s backs, call each other out but still listen attentively and understand, and provide the support that the other has been sorely lacking up until they knew each other (whether that be from lack of effort or lack of understanding from others, or an unwillingness to accept it for themselves).
Then, trailing along under the surface of this, we see the themes of the show totally embodied by Zuko and Katara as individuals and in their relationship to one another. There’s a YouTuber, sneezyreviews, who has a, like, 2-hour explanation on why she not only loves zutara but also believes that their endgame would’ve actually elevated the writing of atla to new levels particularly because of thematic cohesion and resolved character arcs. It’s the zutara dissertation I never knew I needed, and it’s funny and eloquent and effective, so I’m just going to sum up her section on thematic cohesion to the best of my abilities and then link it for whenever you have the time. And I HIGHLY recommend it, especially if you want a full understanding of what makes zutara so great and gives it such longevity.
Guru pathik has a line that goes something like this: separation is an illusion; things that seem different are just two parts of the same whole. Iroh also tells Zuko something similar: balance and strength are achieved when the different nations come together and influence one another and celebrate what makes them each unique. And this lesson is a massive central arc that both Zuko and Katara go through, moving past a black-and-white, good guys-vs-bad guys, us-vs-them mentality and into a greyer, more nuanced view of the world. Zuko sees the fire nation from an entirely new perspective and while he still loves and hopes for his nations future, he surrenders his blind loyalty to them in exchange for an unflinching loyalty to peace and love. Katara too had to come to terms with the fact that cruel people exist in the earth kingdom and water tribes, while some fire nation citizens are just regular, kind people who also need and deserve to have someone speak on their behalf. And this is honed in directly on how they view each other. They grow in their individual journeys to be open to the humanity in the other and then, once they’ve found that, they’re able to grow more in compassion for others in a beautiful feedback loop. And this is all matched in the symbolism repeatedly and intentionally associated with them in canon: sun and moon, fire and water, yin and yang, Oma and Shu who found love despite their warring nations. Their individual arcs are completed in each other and complement the themes of atla beautifully.
The canon pairs... just don’t. Which, again, is fine. But the very things that give atla longevity and popularity are anchored in zutara. Kat@ang doesn’t accomplish this. They’re... nice. Sweet. Especially when you erase a good portion of their interactions in S3. It could’ve been just a sweet love story. (Personally, the dynamic between toph and aang accomplish the same thing that zutara does, with complementary personalities that fulfill the theme of opposites blending in harmony) M@iko, on the other hand, is less sweet but I think wasn’t even supposed to last. Zuko’s relationship with Mai seems to represent his relationship with his old life as a whole. He can’t be emotionally vulnerable, he’s goaded into abusing his privileges, his agency and opinions aren’t respected. They just don’t have common ground with which to discuss anything that matters, so they don’t. As far as themes, the relationship doesn’t fit with atla. It’s zuko returning to and sticking with what is (on the surface) like him, what’s expected. Fire nation with fire nation. Fluid water bender with the flexible air bender. Like with like, separated from what is different and challenging and complementary.
And all of these things combined of course lead to the potential for the ship. I don’t know how familiar you are with the post-atla canon but... well, miss “I will never turn my back on people who need me”, miss “I don’t want to heal! I want to fight!” ends up living quietly in the SWT as a designated healer who turns a blind eye to the water tribe civil war happening right outside her front door. Which can be fine! People change! Some people just wanna stay inside. I just wanna stay inside! But the potential future for zutara is so much more satisfying, with Katara becoming the most unconventional Fire Lady the uppity old cads who are stuck on the old ways have ever seen. Fanon has her serving as a voice for the other nations within a kingdom at the point of its biggest political upheaval, as a confidante to Zuko who can actually help him while he’s trying to figure out how to move forward and make reparations. They have the opportunity, together, to accomplish what they both have set on their hearts to fight for: positive change that lends itself to harmony and balance. And the steambabies! A popular headcanon is that their firstborn daughter, the crown princess, is actually a waterbender, which causes such an uproar among the people who are adamantly clinging to the old ways. It’s just a future full of potential to be forces for good together, full of trust, intimacy, joy. The exact era of peace and love and balance that zuko announces that he intends to ring in with the start of his reign as Fire Lord is, again, magnified by the very personal zutara relationship. And we love to see it.
tl;dr zutara isn’t for everyone. Some people just don’t vibe with it. Some are nostalgic. Some love the canon they grew up with. Some have been disappointed for years. Some just see themselves in other characters and want their happiness instead. Whatever the reason, that’s fine. But for me, I love the way these two, from the moment they give each other a fair chance, are able to lower their walls and prejudices to see the other for the kindred spirits they are. They see each other’s humanity, and their response is to pour out love and support and compassion. I love that they’re a power couple in battle. I love the symbolism and, honestly, soulmatism that colors their every interaction. I love that they embody the whole storyline of atla in their relationship and how it develops, which is notably why their seasonal arcs always culminate in each finale with how they relate to one another. I love that zuko adopting a waterbending move is what actually saves his life and then katara’s. I love the chemistry! And I love the future they could’ve had, instead of the ones they were given.
So, in conclusion: I just think they’re neat and I hope you do too, at least a little bit. Even if it’s just respectfully from a disinterested distance cause you do you. And now here is the video I mentioned. I’m sorry this post got so long and then I gave you an even longer homework assignment, but I can’t recommend it enough. She says it all better than I can.
How would you sort Will Graham?
oh this is a delightful question!! I'm assuming you mean on the primary/secondary model thing @wisteria-lodge has going?
If you mean just bog-standard HP sorting, then I'd say Gryffindor without hesitation. Before all things, he will do what he believes is right, and he will always choose to be brave—and he would want to be in Gryffindor, which is what would matter.
In the more interesting (imo at least) primary/secondary model of sorting, I'd say Will is a Lion Snake with a helpful bird model.
Man, I tried to approach that in a segmented way and explain each part on its own—but lbr that was never gonna work with Mr. "I am a writhing mass of masks with a fire of righteousness at my core and it may seem simple to pull me apart, but try it and burn" Graham.
The thing is, his snake secondary is so damn powerful that he had to build the bird model as a way to keep himself grounded—he loves his pack, but he doesn't just want a community of dogs, he wants dogs that are projects, dogs he can go through the complicated and delicate and very real work of training and rehabilitating. He tinkers and builds specialty lures, letting his secondary bird model carry him through actions that are simple in their finite complexity, enough to occupy him without taking him over.
Because, with his snake secondary, being taken over is how he operates. He either finds a mask (when he becomes someone else) or he builds one (what he did in season 2 with Hannibal), and then he steps into it so completely that his lion primary is almost entirely supplanted by whatever primary the mask has. Which is where the horror comes from, when he snaps back to himself and feels all that revulsion at having abandoned his primary, and—for however brief a time—having believed whatever awful things the mask he'd worn believed.
I nearly put him as a bird primary because of that—so much of who he is seems based around the desperate need to know himself, to have a fixed reality that he can depend on. That search for truth feels very much like a ravenclaw primary. But I'd argue it's just a side-effect of the way his snake secondary and his lion primary interact—he's terrified of losing sight of his actual values, and gravitates towards anything that can make the way he operates in the world feel safe.
Then there is some extra fun horror when the line between himself and the mask starts to blur in season 2, and he's full on in love with the man he was pretending to care about, and not at all sure if he enjoyed the kill or the righteousness of it. Though, by season 3 at least (if not sooner), I'd say he's figured out that he enjoyed the righteousness, and never reveled in the power of the violence for its own sake. With that confirmed, I think he's far more comfortable in his snake secondary—though he still doesn't know how to feel about the blurrier bits, the parts of the mask he wore for Hannibal that weren't a mask at all, but simple a part of him viewed from a new angle.
The final moments of the show are in many ways about self-acceptance, and I'd say a part of that is Will fully occupying that part of himself without making it into a mask. The side of himself that murders the dragon with Hannibal and knows it is beautiful—that is not a side he would bring out around everyone. But he's not lying when that part is set aside, and for once he admits that he's not lying when that part comes forward. He lets himself experience it fully, and (to his relief, I'd say) he finds that in that moment he is still entirely himself, lion primary bright and powerful. So, he pushes them off the cliff, because he feels it is the right thing to do.
Anyway, when I got this ask I wondered if I'd been out of the fandom too long to have much to say about this, and LOLZ.
Curious to hear your thoughts, nonny! Or @wisteria-lodge, not sure if you've sorted Will?
#hannibal#hannibal meta#man it was hard to pull my brain back into this thinking#I am almost done with a novel in which I follow a similar sort of model—but with a slightly different basis for where the lines are drawn#and trying to remember how the hp/wisteria-lodge way works definitely bent my brain a bit XP#but still - always a fun exercise!#(also if anyone's anxious—I checked with wisteria-lodge when I started the novel and they said it was entirely okay to do an 'inspired by')#sara says a thing#asks#will graham
I'm crying. It was YOU! 😂
But anyway, yeah. I don't think we'll totally line-up on this one.
I have little to no faith that the GA (or even a large part of the fandom) would be able to make the necessary distinctions without handholding by the writers. And I don't see handholding happening here.
And yes. A lot of that falls on the audience and its inability to understand nuance.
But because I understand the audience and don't expect handholding, I try to look at it as realistically as I can. Especially when it comes to how the narrative is going to be interpreted.
I do understand what you're saying. I just also disagree about the retconning. I think that's the major disagreement here really. Whether it's retconning and what that would mean.
I will say tho that I still think you need to read-up on sexual fluidity. Because hun, not everyone's sexuality is fixed. 😂
Okay, let me preface that...
1. I had an awesomely funny idea about a rant on tea and why tea is still superior. Something along the lines of "You think tea is expendable, but you're wrong" (and you are), but now I forgot half of it again because I had to work.
2. A more serious preface: I really love how we (and many other people) can have differences in opinion and still be respectful and get along great. I mean, as much as we can sometimes be quite passionate about our opinions, in the end, MOST things are just approximations of truths. We apply categories and definitions, interpret things and approach them depending on our own experience and knowledge, and most of the time we're all at least a little bit right - or it's not about being right or wrong at all but just about different and equally valid ways to look at things.
That being said, I want to start with your last point. Sexual fluidity.
I have read quite a bit about it. I have also read counter-arguments on it, different takes, and anything in between. It's a topic where psychologists and sociologists aren't all in agreement either. I know there are various studies on the subject with differing results.
The first question I am asking - and people have pointed that out as well - is whether what people 'identify as' (e.g. someone who 'used to be straight' but 'now is gay' or other) can be taken at face value. Is a thing ultimately true just because a person says that's the way they want to name it?
I guess the answer to this is yes and no. (There are so many implications here that this question alone would probably fill an entire essay, which I'm not going to do now). While, yes, I absolutely would say people should respect and not question what others say about their own sexuality, if we're talking about it from a more scientific viewpoint, things can get different nuances. People may choose to identify a certain way because they feel those categories fit better. But they apply those categories ("I am gay") more to a status quo than the big picture.
Furthermore, some people have criticised the concept of sexual fluidity because it can be used in harmful ways against people. Many argue that they could never help or fight their sexual orientation because it is innate ("Born this way"). If you bring in the idea that sexuality can change*, you open the door for people who will say "No, you were not born this way. You took a wrong turn somewhere, and you can turn back."
Then again, others feel that the experience of their sexuality having changed in profound ways validates this concept, which is also something one has to take into account.
However.
*I, personally, and going by some of the articles, essays, and study summaries I read, believe that sexuality is mostly innate. There will always be exceptions to every rule under the sun, but in the vast majority of cases, your sexuality develops early on and remains within the same range throughout your life. (Intensity/motivation/drive is much more subject to fluctuations than orientation.)
What you define as "range" is, I assume, the crux of the matter.
(I'm solely going to talk about targets now, i.e. male or female sex, leave out motivation/intensity/character of attraction, and leave out other variants of gender identity for the sole purpose on keeping it simple and focusing on this one aspect)
If we view sexual orientation on a spectrum from "attracted to females" to "attracted to males", many studies suggest that the extreme ends of the spectrum are rarer than the area in between. In a way, more people are at least "a little bit bi" than entirely straight or entirely gay.
How you define that and where you draw the line depends on what aspects of sexuality you take into account: are we basing it solely on sexual attraction (i.e. seeing women and finding them physically appealing, being interested - be it in reality or fantasy - in sexual conduct with them), do we make a distinction between sexual attraction and sexual behaviour (i.e. people who do not feel attraction per se but engage in sex with a person based on other criteria), and do fantasies/thought experiments feature into what we call attraction?
The thing is, here you already have the dilemma that definitions differ; interpretations of them differ as well, as does quantification.
When I talk about sexual orientation, however, I am talking about physically present and distinguishable attraction. I.e. someone who is bi does experience - potentially varying - levels of sexual attraction to both men and women. (I, a bisexual can look at, say, Eddie Diaz and Taylor Kelly and think 'hot damn, I'd so tap that!' I.e. I am physically attracted to both of them.)
Does that mean that a bisexual person needs to act on it, or even has always been aware of it? No. There are so many secondary factors that influence why we a) feel attraction and b) allow ourselves to feel it that it can be tricky to figure yourself out.
However, once someone develops attraction to the same sex, that person didn't suddenly wake up gay. There is no 'fluidity' that would make a straight man turn gay all of the sudden if he wasn't already on that spectrum. In my opinion. So the fluidity here is more about how this person experiences something that has always been a potential for, in this case, him. He was always bi/on the bi spectrum, he just needed some time and the right occasion to discover it.
"But Sandra (yes, that's my actual name ^^), that's why I'm saying Eddie is bi," you may say. And yes, he could be bi. It would be totally logically sound to see him as bi, and I'm not disputing it.
However, the point that I've been making about Eddie is that sexual behaviour - and even the way we want to define ourselves - can differ from sexual attraction/orientation.
We know there are people who thought they were 'insert sexual orientation here' for many years until they figured out they're actually something else. And most of those people will later say things like "deep down, I always knew" or "there were so many signs, but I didn't want to see them". Some might say "being straight worked okay for me - I wasn't suffering in those relationships - but now that I've been with a man/men, I know it was never the exact right thing for me. This, what I've discovered now, is a completely different level of sexual desire and pleasure that I've never known before."
You also didn't dispute that those stories are valid. I'm just putting it out there again.
Now, what you've been saying about how those concepts and stories translate to fictional creations and their perception by a general audience.
You may be right in your assumption that the GA won't be able to understand these nuances, and that the writers won't go out of their way to hold their hands and make them get it. The question is just, does the vast majority of the GA have to get it?
I would like it if they did, but the thing is, the GA already doesn't understand those things as well as we do. No matter how you spin it and how you show it, there will be parts of the GA who will simply not get it, or draw the wrong conclusions ("Oh, Buck is gay now or what?" for example). Whether Buck and Eddie are explicitly labeled as bi or, in Eddie's case (because Buck definitely is not) gay, people will twist it somehow so it fits their worldview.
So I don't even fully care about how the GA will perceive either of the options.
Personally, I would just love to see a story about a man realising later in his adult life that he is - and always has been - gay. I would love to see what we saw only the result of with Michael explored in more detail. And I think it could be valuable if done right. It could even make some of the GA understand that this is a legitimate thing that happens to people - the same GA that's already somewhat familiar, on a very rudimentary level, with that concept through Michael but might want to actually learn more about it.
We would still get great representation for a bisexual man in Buck. We'd have both types in one ship, and to me, personally, that would be the ideal scenario.
It's not a head canon, it's an actual potential I see and that I find valid evidence for in the text of the show (while, yes, there is also evidence for the contrary, because 'evidence' in literary or film analysis is almost always up for interpretation and dispute).
To me, it's doable to show Eddie as a man who, yes, loved his wife, enjoyed having sex with her, but did that out of affection, an emotional connection, and a yearning for physical closeness rather than actual physical attraction. It doesn't have to go that way, but it could. And it would not invalidate that he loved Shannon, if done right.
I'm not saying you are wrong in the way you interpret things, or what you foresee the response to be. I'm just saying I'm looking at it from a different angle than you. And I believe both stances can absolutely co-exist because, as I said in my preface, I don't believe this is a thing that can be narrowed down as actually correct or incorrect.
NOW I'M GONNA MAKE MYSELF A CUP OF TEA BECAUSE I ONLY HAD 1.5 LITRES TODAY AND THAT WON'T DO! (I'm kidding, I'm actually drinking water)
NSFW (whole alphabet) for Captain Rex? 🥺🥺
A/N: Hell yes! Sorry this took so long for me to get to. I love Rex so much, words cannot describe. I hope to do my favorite Captain justice. And as a reminder, REBLOG AND COMMENT IF YOU LIKE THIS!!! These take just as much time as drabbles and the tags hate me.
A = Aftercare (what they’re like after sex)
Can you say, soft? Because Rex is soft. He’ll do whatever you ask; run a bath, rub your sore muscles, hold you close, whatever you want. He is the sweetest man after sex.
B = Body part (their favorite body part of theirs and also their partner’s)
Rex honestly has a hard time picking his favorite part about you. His first instinct is to say your legs, but then he thinks about it and say the part where your legs meet your back. Actually, that whole area. That, and above it...
For himself, Rex is actually really proud of his back. You’ve playfully giving him a few wolf whistles when you’ve seen him doing pull ups without a shirt on. He knows he’s strong and if the way your nails dig into his back when he takes you against a wall is any indication; you appreciate his strength too.
C = Cum (anything to do with cum, basically)
He always ends up leaving a mess whenever he cums. From lack of experience, he hasn’t quite got the timing down on pulling out and so it often spills half inside you, some on your skin and some on the mattress. There are times you wonder if he does it on purpose. There have been a few times he openly moaned at the sight of his cum dripping down your inner thigh.
D = Dirty secret (pretty self explanatory, a dirty secret of theirs)
He does cum in a mess on purpose. He apologizes every time and helps clean you up. However, that doesn’t stop him from getting hard all over again at the sight of you blissed out of your mind and stained with his cum.
E = Experience (how experienced are they? do they know what they’re doing?)
We’re going to say none before you. Like seriously. I don’t know where is Dom-Captain Rex came from in the fandom, but that is not this man’s M.O. His devotion is 110% to the GAR and we see how awkward he gets in social situations outside anything having to do with the army or his brothers.
So, yeah, Captain Rex is a virgin the first time you have sex. You cannot convince me otherwise. Luckily for you, he’s also a man who learns and adapts quickly. ;)
F = Favorite position (this goes without saying)
You on your back with your legs draped over his arms as he pounds into you. He gets a perfect view of everything; your bouncing tits, your eyes, the way his cock slides in and out of you, plus the option to grab hold of the headboards and really go to down.
A close second is pinning your back against the wall with your legs wrapped around his waist. He loves the feeling of your nails down his back as he fucks up into you. And gravity does the work for him when he pulls out and sees his cum going down your leg.
G = Goofy (are they more serious in the moment? are they humorous? etc.)
It takes him a while to loosen up in bed. When you guys first start having sex it’s like he’s on a recon mission; what works, what doesn’t, testing his own endurance as well as yours, that kind of thing. It’s only when he gets a full inventory on how to make you feel good as well as himself does he start cracking jokes. It’s not the norm, but it reaches about 30%.
H = Hair (how well groomed are they? does the carpet match the drapes? etc.)
He doesn’t really do much down there until he meets you, besides keeping it clean. After you guys start sleeping together, he starts to trim it down and experiment a bit. He even shaved all the hair off at one point, but you assured him he didn’t need to.
Also, he had dark hair down there. No, he is not bleaching his pubic hair.
I = Intimacy (how are they during the moment? the romantic aspect)
Rex is focused on you the entire time. He wants you to know he’s paying attention to you and listening to your wants and needs. It’s more a sliding scale of how emotional it can get, often depending on how much of his own emotion and tension he’s keeping bottled up.
J = Jack off (masturbation headcanon)
He’s done it plenty of times before he met you and continues to do it after you get together; his fantasies now just focus on you and you exclusively. Privacy is an issue in the GAR so often he has to wait late at night to get the showers to himself. However, he prefers it when he gets a chance to take the time alone in his own bed. It’s really the best way he knows to fully relax without you there beside him.
K = Kink (one or more of their kinks)
Rex is still exploring his kinks, but he’s finding he gets a certain thrill out of cum play. Eating you out with his cum still in your pussy is not something he’d ever thought he’d enjoy until one night he couldn’t help himself and ended up cumming on the mattress while you came again on his tongue.
And, I’m just going to put this headcanon to bed. CAPTAIN REX IS NOT A DOM, HE IS A SWITCH!!!
Yes, he likes it when you call him Captain or Sir in bed. Yes, he likes giving you orders and having you obey them to the letter. But if you’re telling me he doesn’t get off to the idea of you riding his face and using his body in any way you choose to find your own pleasure; then you and I are not talking abut the same character.
L = Location (favorite places to do the do)
Your apartment Like I said, privacy is an issue on more GAR ships. The Clones have quarters on Coruscant, but it lacks the personality of your place, not to mention you have thicker walls. It also means he’s off duty and doesn’t have to be worried of being call to the bridge at any given moment. He can fully relax and focus on you and himself.
Now when it comes to where in your apartment, literally anywhere to a flat surface. He’s not picky.
M = Motivation (what turns them on, gets them going)
You calling him “sir” or “captian” in public. To give him some credit, it’s not only the words, so much as how you say them. If you say, “yes, sir” like you’re out of breath or worse, if you look up at him through heavy eyelids, he’s going to need a minute to straighten himself out.
There’s also this spot just on the edge of his hairline on his neck that melts him. All you have to do is brush that spot with your finger or your lips and he’s going to groan.
And cliche, but I have to say it; any time he sees you kick droid ass or even just verbally destroy somebody in a debate. Your his cyar’ika and he’s going to let you do whatever you want to him that night.
N = No (something they wouldn’t do, turn offs)
Water play. He found it by accident when researching different stuff to try. He thought it would be like shower sex and it’s...not. The moment he realized what it was he was disgusted and told you immediately that was going on the “no” list.
O = Oral (preference in giving or receiving, skill, etc.)
Split 50/50 between preferring to give or receive. God knows how many times he’s gotten himself off to the image of your lips wrapped around his cock. He loves how your fingers dig into his thighs as you take him all the way into your mouth. And seeing cum drip down your lip is enough to get him hard again in seconds.
On the other hand having your perfect thighs wrapped around his head as you fuck is face is as close to heaven as he can imagine. He can stay inbetween your legs for hours reveling in your taste and the way your tremble around him every time he makes you cum. His current record is making you cum three times in the row with just his tongue and fingers before you pushed him away just so you could breath.
P = Pace (are they fast and rough? slow and sensual? etc.)
He can do either or, but he leans more on the rough side. No matter how slow he might start, by the end he’s gripping your thighs like a vice and pounding into your cunt as he loses all sense of control.
Q = Quickie (their opinions on quickies, how often, etc.)
Only if he knows he’ll get to have you all to himself later that night. He thinks of quickies as just a preview of what’s the come, rather than a done deal.
That all being said, he’s not keen on them. For one, he doesn’t want to risk getting caught. Two, he would never, ever, have a quickie while on duty. Which leads to three, if he’s already off duty he might as well take you to bed right now.
R = Risk (are they game to experiment? do they take risks? etc.)
Like I’ve said, Rex lacks a lot of experience, but he’s adaptable and a fast learner. You guys have a list of different things you want to try and are slowly working your way down, checking what you like and crossing out ones you don’t.
The only thing he won’t risk is getting caught in the act. For one, he would never hear the end of it from the rest of the 501st. And second, he thinks it would reflex negatively, not only on himself as a solider but on the rest of the GAR.
S = Stamina (how many rounds can they go for? how long do they last?)
As a genetically enhanced soldier, his stamina is insane. Granted, it takes him a while to hold off his own orgasm the first few times you have sex. But, his recovery time is amazing.
He’s good for about three rounds on an average night and once he gets the hang of things, he can make those three rounds last hours.
Your current record is him cumming five times in one night while you lost count once you reached the double digits.
T = Toys (do they own toys? do they use them? on a partner or themselves?)
Captain Rex would not be caught dead having any toys with him. Not in his bunk, not in his apartment on Coruscant, not anywhere. He cannot imagine how he’d explain that to anyone if they found out.
However, you have a perfectly nice little collection at your apartment. You guys have been experimenting.
U = Unfair (how much they like to tease)
He tries, but he’s not good at it. When he gets into his, “Captain” mode, he does like the idea of keeping you on the edge, but it never lasts. As soon as you buck your lips and the first little, “please” leaves your lips, he’s done. He has to give you everything.
V = Volume (how loud they are, what sounds they make, etc.)
He’s not quiet, but he’s not going to scare the neighbors. He’s a talker, surprisingly. It’s like whatever filter he has as a commander just slips away the moment he buries himself inside you. He praises how you feel. He mumbles curses and promises until they turn into delirious grunts and groans just before he cums.
W = Wild card (a random headcanon for the character)
Everyone in the 501st knows you guys are fucking the moment you start, even if Rex never tells anyone anything. He is terrible at hiding his feelings toward you. Add that to the fact both Fives and Jesse noticed the not so subtle hickies all over his body, and it’s not hard to guess where he got them from.
Rex denies it whenever it’s brought up, but everyone knows the truth.
X = X-ray (let’s see what’s going on under those clothes)
I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again; EVERY SINGLE CLONE IS HUNG WITH A THICK EIGHT INCH DICK! And since all of them don’t really have a frame of reference as to what’s “big” or not, they all assume they’re average size (at least until they get someone in bed).
Y = Yearning (how high is their sex drive?)
Not crazy high, but after he meets you it’s like his sex drive just triggered into over drive. It could also be because you guys are apart so often. But, either way you’re having sex almost every night you’re together. Maybe after the war things will calm down, but not before then.
Z = Zzz (how quickly they fall asleep afterwards)
Almost as soon as you guys finally decide to call it a night. He’s fallen asleep a few times while in the bathtub with you, is all I’m saying.
Unpopular Opinion: what George Lucas has to say about Star Wars and the Jedi is interesting from an academic perspective, but ultimately irrelevant. Star Wars is far bigger than him, and always has been; the author is always dead, but he's *especially* dead in a collaborative medium like film where his editor/director/script doctor/actor also change the product. And frankly, that product stands on its own! It doesn't need his explanations to justify anything, the stuff that people appeal to him for is all already on screen.
Sometimes I see SW fans dismiss Sequel or Old Republic content because Lucas didn't have a hand in it so it doesn't count or doesn't reflect on his (read: the "real") Jedi or Republic and it just feels so gatekeepey and weird to me. If it's consistent with the OT and feels like Star Wars to the people who love it, it's Star Wars and it's a valid part of the discussion.
strongly agree | agree | neutral | disagree | strongly disagree I both agree and disagree. George Lucas’ comments on Star Wars and the Jedi are relevant because Lucasfilm and many of the people who are in charge of making SW content have expressed that they are actively trying to hold true to his vision, as well as he was still directing the overall story narrative for the first six movies and TCW. His input matters because SW was his baby and he had ultimate say and the foundation that he lays out is the narrative intention of his movies, so when we’re discussing the narrative intentions of those movies/TV shows, he was the one putting the lion’s share of those narrative intentions there. However, if the argument is that “word of god commentary doesn’t matter at all”, then I would also agree that that’s an entirely valid way of doing things, because word of god =/= canon, only what’s on screen is canon, as well as nobody is ever obligated to take word of god commentary into account. (Which is setting aside that it can be more complicated than that, in that you’re also free to pick and choose what w/o/g you accept, you’re free to pick and choose what you personally accept as canon in the version that’s in your head, even if it appeared on the screen!) I’m sort of torn on the whole “top tier canon vs supplementary canon” because, on the one hand, I suspect that ignoring that the movies and the TV series are the top tier canon would be an exercise in frustration because even LF themselves have said basically as much, that the movies always come first, they just are the primary source material. While at the same time, that doesn’t devalue the supplementary material, and I think it’s better to just simply look at them as separate continuities, much like Legends and LF canon aren’t inherently better/worse than each other, but that they’re just different continuities. The thing is that I think we’re having discussions about what “counts” as Star Wars and what other people have to take into consideration and those are two separate things to my mind. What “counts” as Star Wars? All of it. What do other people have to take into consideration? Depends on who you’re asking and what they’re interested in. Are you asking someone creating future content for SW? Then they have to take into account the movies + TV series + other canon content. Lucasfilm absolutely gets to set down what “counts” when it comes to what other artists have to consider in creating new stories. But this is not the same thing as saying those other things don’t “count” or aren’t “real” Star Wars. On the other hand, are you asking a fellow fan? Then they don’t have to do jack shit, you can’t make them take anything into account or have it be a part of the discussion for them. And the reverse is true, they can’t make you not take Old Republic content into account, they can’t dismiss that it’s part of your Star Wars experience and informs your discussions. If you and I are having a discussion about the themes of Star Wars, you can’t make me take KOTOR/SWOTOR into account, but also I can’t make you not take them into account, that’s just how fandom operates. Lucasfilm gets to set how they operate, whose word they take into account, what canon means to official Star Wars, etc. But fandom gets to decide that for themselves and, yeah, a lot of people are going to dismiss content from their discussions, but it’s not inherently gatekeepy to do so, unless they start flinging shit at you directly for not agreeing to their standards and saying you’re not a real fan or whatever, just as I’m still a real fan even when I don’t take this or that into account.
Is it bad to enjoy smut between two gay characters? I’m a bisexual woman and people on twitter always talk badly about people who aren’t mlm reading it. I’ve always read smut with any characters I’ve shipped so it doesn’t feel like fetishizing, but people seem to think it is
okay yes let’s talk about this because i have thoughts
*cracks knuckles*
i know there’s a fuck ton of discourse surrounding fandom, slash writers, and the fetishization of queer characters. people’s concerns about this are completely valid and i never want to invalidate anyone’s opinion.
i’m a queer woman. i identify as a lesbian, and my pronouns are she/her. i’m married to an AFAB non-binary person who uses she/they pronouns. i’ve been in relationships with men in the past, before accepting my sexuality and coming out, but i don’t personally find men sexually attractive/want to have sex with men, though i have in the past (comp het is a bitch okay?). however, i enjoy reading and writing smut, even if it does involve men, because it’s fiction. but, i can only speak to my own experience here.
do i want a penis near me in real life? absolutely not. keep that shit as far away from me as humanly possible. like, put-that-thing-back-where-it-came-from-or-so-help-me vibes, okay? but does the concept of penis-adjacent sex make me ill? no. because sex is sex, whether it’s between two men, two women, a man and a woman, or any combination therein. sex is beautiful and exciting, especially when it takes place within the confines of love and passion (i don’t personally enjoy reading about graphic, emotionless sex unless i know it’s a slow burn or like, a fwb to lovers situation). idk, i’m a slut for those late-night whispered confessions of “god, i love you” while the characters are fucking under the covers, like inject that shit into my veins please and thank you 😇💕
twitter is uhhhhhhhhhhhhh something. definitely something. i’ve only ever engaged with fandom on tumblr or instagram, never twitter, because of how fucking insane it can get. my mental health is too fragile for that, which is why i don’t have a twitter account anymore 😬 i understand criticisms of people that aren’t mlm writing and reading mlm smut, just like i understand criticisms of people that aren’t wlw writing and reading wlw smut. the fetishization and commodification of queer sex for consumption by the masses is a huge issue, one i’ve felt the impact of in my own life (i get invasive questions about my sex life from straight and gay people, regularly, when they find out i’m a lesbian - how do two women have sex anyway? do you use sex toys? are you a top or a bottom? on and on, like uhhhhh babe it’s none of your business?)
however. i must reiterate. we’re talking about fiction here. sexy shit is sexy shit, regardless of the pairing. i’ve written and read wlw smut, mlm smut, and straight smut in the past. for me, sex is this universally applied concept that’s entirely genderless. yes, the functions are different depending on the parts and the pairing, but sex is sex is sex is sex, and reading about someone fucking someone else into the mattress, preferably someone they love, is hot regardless of who/what/why.
i don’t think there’s anything wrong with reading and enjoying smut that doesn’t align with you as an individual - that is to say that i don’t think it’s wrong for women to read mlm smut or men to read wlw smut. as long as you’re not actively dehumanizing or infantilizing the characters for your own sexual needs, like reducing them to nothing but the sex acts they engage in and refusing to see them as a whole person, i don’t personally think there’s anything wrong with consuming smut of any kind, regardless of your personal gender expression and sexuality.
also, bad smut is pretty easy to sniff out. like, it’s pretty easy to tell if someone is writing from a fetish-based viewpoint rather than a character-driven one. like when men write lesbian sex scenes and it’s like 90% aggressive fingering. like, excuse me? my good sir, that’s...not how that works. idk what to tell you. you don’t just jam your fingers up there and hope for the best, okay? like, it’s easy to tell if someone’s knowledge about wlw or mlm sex acts comes solely from overproduced, performative p0rn or if it comes from a long history of reading and writing smut or talking about sex with wlw and mlm themselves (i enjoy talking about sex with my wlw and mlm friends and a lot of my knowledge of mlm sex obviously isn’t first-hand since i’m a queer woman, but is largely shaped by my mlm friends themselves and the stories we’ve shared with each other - i’d trust them to write wlw smut as gay men because of the open, honest, and respectful conversations we’ve had and what i’ve shared with them about how wlw sex works)
all in all, i don’t think it’s fetishization to read mlm smut as a queer, bisexual, or straight woman. i don’t think it’s inherently bad, or shameful, or dirty. like, are asexual people not allowed to read smut if they enjoy it? they may not want to jump on a dick themselves, but if they enjoy reading about their favorite character jumping on a dick, they should be allowed to do that. fiction is fiction, stories are stories, and the great part about existing as an autonomous being is the ability to pick and choose the content you consume and create based on your own personal preferences, and extend the same right to everyone else. 💛
Fic Writer Review
thanks for the tag, @setting-in-a-honeymoon !
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
60! which is a lot, and also doesn’t include the fics i orphaned from an old fandom (a controversial decision to me, by me)
2. What’s your total AO3 wordcount?
867,941
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
so many throughout history, and some i’m sure i’ve forgotten. and yes, i’ve been writing RPF since age 13 and am developmentally stunted as a result. smallville, x-men, lotr, afi, fall out boy, battlestar galactica, mcu, iron man, marina del rey, mcr, star trek, supernatural, p!atd, and now the latest blessed sinkhole, cobra kai.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Stranger Danger
From Russia With Love
The Difference Between Real Love and the Love On TV
Boys Next Door/Assholes
Jet Black Crow
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
oh, I really mean to, i swear. but I have 340 in my inbox that I haven’t responded to. I appreciate my kind and supportive reviewers so much! I just don’t have a lot of time or energy, and I usually choose reading or writing with my time instead of responding to messages. your comments are a gift and I love receiving them so much!!!
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
lol in the olden days, I once ended a fic with a surprise suicide, because i was a cruel and mercurial child. all my fob fics have happy endings though! the fic I have online right now that gets the most ‘wtf is this ending’ feedback is the unreliable narrator ghost story, the ending of which is either happy or REAL SAD, depending on how you interpret is, is Baby You’re A Haunted House
7. Do you write crossovers? If so what’s the craziest one you’ve written?
i don’t write crossovers per se but I love a good universe smash. the wildest one I’ve done is my beauty and the beast/coyote ugly peterick remix.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
god yes, i started writing fic in 2003 and i cannot stress enough how different fandom was back then
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
absolutely I do, lots of emotional intensity but also good old fashioned fucking
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
a million years ago on deviantart
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
yes! it is the biggest compliment ever, you guys are too good to me
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
hahahahaha @carbonbased000
13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
hard question! rpf is my favorite thing to write because I love making transformations within set biographical constraints, it is by far my favorite way to be creative, but there are so many ships with interesting dynamics. i’m true blue for peterick but i also love fic with older characters who are all gritty and wounded navigating overt and internalized homophobia, and girl ships are the stuff of life. some of my favorite ships I never write for (for example, kirk/spock or various lotr pairings) because like. I have absolutely nothing to add, it’s already perfect. lawrusso is my favorite of the moment because cobra kai is an absolutely WILD show, it’s a blast
14. What’s a wip that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
UGH my ageswap peterick about Patrick letting everyone down again and again and again. literally I’ve been working on this fic for 5 years and only have like one scene left to write but it’s become a goddamn albatross around my neck
15. What are your writing strengths?
I’m funny and I use pretty words, and the fact that I want good things for all my characters shines through
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
will you laugh if I say plot? I am terrible at plots. almost all of my fics are just situations and how people react to them emotionally. the other thing is spatial descriptions, I can’t picture things in my head so i am wildly inconsistent and often just forget to add these in. oh, and I also get so lost in the dreamy emotional bits of people’s inner experiences that I lose my own narrative thread over and over and over again.
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I love it if you’re a student of the language, bilingual, or get someone who is fluent to beta that shit for you. if you don’t have the skillset or resources to do it right, there’s a real risk of cultural appropriation and fetishizing someone’s foreignness, so I’d steer clear. there’s the question of what it adds to the experience of the fic, as a reader or a writer, that has to be considered
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
afi rpf, and I dead-ass thought I’d invented it. you shoulda seen my brain explode when i discovered an entire archive just for that.
19. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
I’ve reached a level of pride in my skill that I love most of the fics I finish—if I don’t, I tend not to finish or post! so I’m usually enamored with my most recent stories and have a deep appreciation for most of my gallery. but I do literally have a girl out boy tattoo and that universe (and how my amazing readers participated in building it with me) will always be the most personally important to me, regardless of whether its technical merit is outstripped by newer works
i tag--who wants to do this tag? @leyley09 @sir-transcelot @alienfuckeronmain @carbonbased000 @allkindsofplatinumandpercocet @rhea-imagined @all my other lovelies who feel like doing writing reflection as a means of procrastinating actual writing
My ridiculous fandoms:
I know, multifandom much?!
I have a LOT, although I will post mostly AoS shit. (I don’t make things for all of these, don’t worry lmao, mostly I just spectate and sometimes reblog stuff.) Up to know I’ve put them all up in my bio, but I’ve decided only to do the top, say, three, otherwise it just gets wayyy too long. However, I’m putting it all here, so that anyone, if they feel so inclined, can see what shit I’m interested in.
I will also be putting a bunch of my favourite quotes from the shows there, because, well, I’m a total nerd xD.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
”With great responsibility comes...a ton of weird shit you are not prepared to deal with.”
“The steps you take don’t have to be big, they just need to take you in the right direction.”
“Sometimes, making a difference means being different.”
Star Trek: Discovery (sauce)
“You had me at unsanctioned mission...”
“Deal with me, universe, while I deal with her.”
And...(though this is not a real quote, exactly) Sauce Afirma Sauce Eterna. :)
Derry Girls
“If anyone is feeling anxious, worried or maybe you just want a chat, please, please do not come crying to me.”
“We got the gist. They ran out of spuds, everyone was raging.”
“Slainte, motherfuckers!”
Julie and the Phantoms
“Chill man, Street Dogs haven’t killed us yet.”
“I cried in a room for twenty-five years and didn’t get a single hug from either of you!”
“Oh. She said oh. That’s what you say if you get socks on your birthday, not when you’re invited to join the most epic band ever!”
Brigerton
“Having a nice face and pleasant hair is not an accomplishment. Do you know what is an accomplishment? Attending university! If I were a man, I could do that, you know.”
“You would actually have to be interesting for me to bother spying on you"
“All is fair in love and war but some battles leave no victor, only a trail of broken hearts that makes us wonder if the price we pay is ever worth the fight.”
Simon Snow series
“You were the sun, and I was crashing into you.”
“Sharing a room with the person you want most is like sharing a room with an open fire. He's constantly drawing you in. And you're constantly stepping too close. And you know it's not good--that there is no good--that there's absolutely nothing that can ever come of it. But you do it anyway. And then... Well. Then you burn.”
“I'd cross every line for him. I'm in love with him. And he likes this better than fighting.”
"Sometimes The Best Teacup Is Chipped."
"All Magic Comes With A Price."
The Good Place
“I’m just not a ‘new experience’ kind of guy. My comfort zone is basically like, that chair, and honestly? The arms are a little sharp.”
“What matters isn’t if people are good or bad. What matters is, if they’re trying to be better today than they were yesterday. You asked me where my hope comes from? That’s my answer.”
“We do nothing. We hope that our early successes make up for the embarrassing mess we’ve become. Like Facebook. Or America.”
Community
"We'll definitely be back next year. If not, it'll be because an asteroid has destroyed all human civilization. And that's canon."
"GAAYYY MARRIAAGEE!!"
Zoey’s Extraoridnary Playlist
“Songs are all just an expression of our deepest wants and desires… Joy, pain, heartbreak, yearning, forgiveness, revenge. Good music can make you feel things you can’t express in words.”
“I just found out a guy I like is engaged, and I am either going totally nuts, or I suddenly can hear people’s innermost thoughts as big musical numbers.”
The Old Gaurd
“We lost the crickets,” she said. “Even you can’t make that sound tough.”
“I never tell anyone exactly how clever I am. They would be too scared.”
How To Train Your Dragon
“ Thank you for nothing, you useless reptile!”
“You just gestured to all of me.”
“Toothless, what are you doing? We need her to LIKE us!”
The Dragon Prince
“I’m just a kid. I haven’t fought in any battles. I haven’t read many books of wisdom. I haven’t gone through the things that made my father the king he was. So I’ve decided that I don’t have to be the king my father was. My father made choices to keep fighting battles that started hundreds of years before he was born. To punish enemies for crimes their parents committed! I don’t want to be that kind of king.”
“The dragon prince is alive! And he’s really cute, by the way.”
“What? WHAAAAAAAT!”
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
“Would it save you a lot of time if I just gave up and went mad now?”
“A towel, [The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy] says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-boggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.”
“For a moment, nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen.”
“The Answer to the Great Question... Of Life, the Universe and Everything... Is... Forty-two,' said Deep Thought, with infinite majesty and calm.”
“Ford... you're turning into a penguin. Stop it.”
sorry for the five I couldn’t choose only 3
But there you have it, my insane, ridiculous, way-too-many fandoms. For anyone who cares. ;)
the common (mis-)conception that dean is somehow emotionally repressed is so baffling and infuriating to me. who has cried on this show as often as he has? but it’s more complex than that.
i mean i get the thought process behind ‘john was a terrible father who kept dean small and treated him as less than human/a tool and live-in nanny -> he can’t handle feelings’, i get where it comes from but it’s just... not exactly the case. dean’s breadth of feeling is part of what draws me towards his character to begin with. i know firsthand that not wanting to discuss your emotions with others doesn’t equal not recognizing them, not being able to handle them, not understanding them. that much is pure conjecture.
to me it’s always been clear that it’s a choice dean is actively making—to not discuss his inner process with whoever asked, usually sam. that’s not the same as being repressed, and usually entirely dependent on the conversational partner and situation, not yourself. and obviously, dean does choose to discuss his inner workings from time to time, when he has deemed it necessary or beneficial. each time he does, it’s pretty clear that he understands what’s going on. that he has thought things through extensively, and come to his own conclusions. he’s not a toddler helpless against the onslaught of foreign feelings. he’s just selective with whom he shares things that are very much personal, as is understandable given his upbringing and also the company he keeps—company that either shuts him down with tough love when he does want to share, company that makes fun of him for even the things he doesn’t say, that uses his feelings as a weapon against him, company that pesters him into sharing despite his obvious reluctance and discomfort. i wouldn’t say jack shit either, if i were him.
feelings are personal. he can deal with them however he wants to, and i’ve always had the impression that his approach was rather smart and showed his situational awareness and understanding of his interpersonal relationships very well. especially given the fact that he’s a hunter, and was brought up to be one, it makes sense that he’s not interested in being vulnerable all the time. i don’t really see anything wrong with that: he is correct in his assessment that his weaknesses will be exploited by others, and the more of a target he presents himself as, the less safe he will be, and he needs to keep his wits about himself if he wants to finish the job. constant emotional vulnerability for the sake of—of what? sam’s comfort? being understood by others who have shown time and time again that they don’t respect his judgement or his boundaries?—for the sake of that is just not expedient, is not smart.
both fandom and the characters on the show seem to be working under the assumption that when dean isn’t talking, that means he isn’t processing. i really don’t see how that makes even a lick of sense. have they never self-reflected or worked things out with themselves? it’s not rocket science. and dean, well, i’m pretty sure he’d be great at rocket science. what makes much more sense is that his default approach to processing feelings is internal. as someone who never had a sympathetic ear growing up, is that not to be expected? that he’s his own most trusted listener? that he likes to have a solid handle on things before he offers them up for someone else to look at and dissect and judge? it’s self-preservation, a strategy. something he employs rather than falls victim to. again, he’s a hunter. a professional.
when he does share, it always has an impact. it’s not that things just break out of him uncontrolled when inner walls crumble under the weight, or something. i’m not saying that’s never happened but usually it’s dean actively making the choice to share a personal experience with someone else in order to achieve a goal, be it friendship, or convincing someone. he chooses these moments carefully.
he’s an adult, not a toddler. he’s a consummate professional in his field more than anyone’s willing to give him credit for. but that applies to most aspects of his personality, not just this—his intelligence, for instance. he’s not some passive thing swept up at sea, in fact his whole storyline is about fighting against superior forces, about not giving up against impossible odds, about carving out a new meaning and new approach for himself/the world. it’s not in his nature to roll over. he’s not helpless. give dean winchester some fucking credit, please, i’m begging you.
