The BBC has an article titled The 'delicious irony' of the Met Gala's Garden of Time theme, in which it explores the dystopian short story by JG Ballard that has inspired this year’s theme.

As the article describes it, it is a ‘short story in which the last bastion of rich, refined beauty – with its classical music, rare books, and its lovely clothing – is overrun by a working-class mob’. As the author continues on to talk about how dystopian the Met Gala with its $30,000 ticket, is in the context of the global uncertainty and increasing poverty, maybe the author themselves would have failed to imagine just how dystopian the whole event would actually end up being.

As we’re all distracted by the gorgeous clothes and display of wealth happening on our phones, there is a group of pro-Palestinian protestors marching towards the gala - a reminder how once again, Israel is taking advantage of how we’re easily distracted by shiny things to ramp up its attack on Rafah

always fascinating whenever i meet other immigrants my age in the queer artsy type of sphere because they will usually have fairly left wing politics when it comes to their western global north country but the moment i ask them about their politics re: their global south country of origin they literally become a fascist

i can’t even explain how concerned i am for rempe when he is 22 and genuinely has potential as a hockey player but it’s all thrown out the window by the rangers who send him out on the ice solely to fight!!!

and you can make the argument that ‘oh he’s not being forced to fight’ but imagine the backlash he would receive if he declined the challenges when he doesn’t even start the fights most of the time!!! you cannot deny the pressure placed on him as essentially a glorified fighting dog

cte is so incredibly serious, and although fighting has been essentially part of the sport for decades, there comes a point where it’s just not justifiable seeing the same person get into fights time after time only to be beat again and again—matt is way too young to be an enforcer, and you can argue that hockey shouldn’t even have the need for enforcers anyway!

occasional fights will always be entertaining to the fans but i feel like a lot of us are losing sight of the physical repercussions of constantly taking hits like that to the head, especially when you are so young.
