I think this is the moment I truly started to dislike Gale.

After reading the first book, I definitely loved Peeta, but I didn't know enough about Gale to either like him or dislike him. He was just there. Katniss's friend and potential love triangle participant. But then Catching Fire starts and in Chapter 2, we get this scene and it really left a bad taste in my mouth that only increases as the series continues.

This really does an incredible job of setting up Gale's entire attitude about Katniss. Their relationship is about him and what he wants. About what he feels like he deserves from her. He kisses her because he wanted to, without any warning or checking in with her to see where she is. He doesn't talk to her about what she's going through or think maybe the best time is not right after she survived an extremely traumatic experience. Gale wants a kiss and he is owed a kiss so by god he's going to have one!

Contrast this with everything we see with Peeta in the first book and even though he too is in love with Katniss and has been for ages, all physical affection is on Katniss's terms. He makes jokes about kissing, but in every kiss, she is the one who initiates and he makes no effort to take that choice or control away from her.

Peeta respects Katniss and her wishes in a way Gale never does and it's never more clear than when comparing the two first kisses.

The thing to remember about Pinball is that it's about seperation. Sport is about contact, about touching, changing the direction of the game with your fingers and your feet. Not pinball. Pinball is about distance. You can shake the snow globe but you'll never feel the bite of the icy flakes landing on your face. you’ve always been a dreamer. growing up with the starks, you’d tell jon (or anyone who asked) about your dreams the night before, either furrowing your brows at the bizarre nature of them, or laughing as you recall dreaming maester luwin having hooves for feet. this didn’t help the fact that you naturally didn’t sleep much. when you did, dreams plagued your mind so often it felt like you weren’t even sleeping at all.

but dreaming often also meant nightmares followed suit. usually, you’d try and calm yourself down, but if it was an especially bad one—you’d find solace in jon’s arms. a risky move in winterfell, but it was either that or you didn’t sleep. and jon slept best with you anyways.

not much had changed in that while at castle black. the only difference is, if you couldn’t sleep, jon would put you to sleep the best way he knew how.

strong arms would cage you in, his calloused hand wrapped in yours, anchoring you as he pays close attention to the space between your thighs. slow drags of his hips as he kisses you sickly sweet, breaking you down piece by piece until your worries melt away, & your brain is only clouded with thoughts of him. his lips on your neck sending goosebumps down your skin, as bolts of pleasure shoot up your spine.

maybe i’m alone on this but i like to think that matt & jess became incredibly close platonically after the mines. jess subconsciously trusting matt after he saved her bc he saw her at her most vulnerable then still stuck by her side and held on for the both of them until they were rescued. matt seeing jess’s sheer strength/endurance and cooperation. i think the lack of her typical brash and provocative persona pained him even though it wasn’t something he ever found endearing.

and don’t let me bring emily into the mix bc the way she’s one of the most important people to both of them?? matt clearly feels inferior during certain moments and like he has to prove himself as emily’s bf. and jess clearly wants to show that she’s better off without emily who’s below her and prove herself as mike’s gf.

and the way matt and jess both think dealing with mike is somehow the solution to their direct relationship with emily. matt thinks verbally warning him and physically bringing him down a peg will resolve any resentment or secrecy between HIM and emily. and jess thinks being intimate with mike will somehow heal the longing and betrayal between HER and emily. ughh i don’t know i think matt & jess are wretched mirrors of each other and the object of their desires is emily.

So you hear about kids going to rich neighborhoods for candy? What if Billy, Mary, and Freddy start raiding the rich neighborhoods of Gotham, Metropolis, Star City, etc for candy. They have it down to a system.

I can totally see the three of them doing that! Mary has made an itinerary, factoring in different time zones, number of houses, and average income for each neighborhood for the ultimate trick or treat route.

Billy hefted his bag over one shoulder, the candy inside weighing it down significantly. They'd already hit Metropolis, Gotham and Fawcett--or at least the best neighborhoods in each--so the sack was bulging already. He was tempted to each a candy bar or two just to lighten the load, but there wasn't time. Halloween was the only night of the year he could get free candy, so he wasn't going to slow down for anything.

Mary handed him her bag as well and unfolded her map, the three of them huddling around it to block any unwanted eyes on their plans.

"Okay, this should be the last neighborhood in Central--at least the last one that has those limited edition Flash bars. I say we make our way to Star City next."

"We gotta hit the Flash museum first," Freddy reminded her. "They have a dozen candy stations for anyone that visits before 7pm."

"Good call," Billy agreed, adjusting the flimsy cape around his shoulders. "I've been a couple times with Wally, so we can race through that pretty quick. Then we can head to Star City--first stop Oliver Queen's house. He promised not just full sized candy bars, but also imported fudge."

Mary nodded decisively and put the map away again, pushing her tiara back into place. "Let's go!"
