Kinda obsessed with the Indo-European concept of a divine set of twins who founded nations. The main two that come to mind are Hengist and Horsa (Anglo-Saxon/England) and Romulus and Remus (Rome). Also, their divinity coming from their divine father, Odin, and Mars, respectively. It plays into my favorite headcanon that nations are pretty much like gods/demi-gods, and I even consider the thought that Germania is like some physical manifestation of Odins will, and the same for Rome with Mars. Or perhaps they are those Gods, and humans just gave them fitting names to match their powers/strengths without knowing what the personifications truly represented (the land, the people, the soul of the "nation," so to speak but then again the idea of nation states are very modern concepts).
I also love the idea of nations having powerful abilities. I'm still deciding if it should be mythological powers from their respective pantheons/religions, powers related to astrology, or simple abilities to manipulate the elements. Perhaps even a mixture of all three. I'm still of the mind that astrology physically and mentally affects nations/countries, and extreme events have the opportunity to remake their souls and sometimes their physical bodies. Like for France, the French Revolution remade the makeup of French society and, as a result, remade him. He had a metaphysical/spiritual and physical death that transformed not only his mind and soul but his body as well. So I headcanon for him that before the Revolution he had light/fair hair and blue eyes, but after the Revolution his hair and eyes took on darker pigments which is a reflection of not only the radical trajectory that French history took but also the radical change in his astrology (mainly his new chart being ruled by Mars and Pluto due to his Scorpio Ascendant). This change would have also affected and transformed his abilities, whatever they may be. Much to think about.
#ive considered changing Arthurs last name because of the Odin/Germania thing#something like Wodenson since Wōden is old English for Odin. so Woden + son = Wodenson. Arthur Wodenson? idk its an idea#i think all the Germanics should have some variation of this name due to their link to Germania#for Arthur it's even more symbolic because his first name is very much Briton but his last name is Saxon#hetalia#hetalia headcanons#hetalia meta#a nation is a god verse#new tag

Idk if it’d be too much work for you, but as non-English speaker I don’t really understand how to pronounce most if twst names and surnames. Please, do you know where can I listen to the right pronunciation or write it yourself, if it’s okay? Thank you in advance!
I think you can probably start off with listening to the characters’ names being said in the voice lines of the game. If you need to see how the names are written out, you can always reference the Romaji sections of the character profiles on the unofficial TWST wiki. The wiki also has voice lines, which you can listen to (there is no isolated voice line of characters just saying their name, so you’ll have to hunt for those on your own; you can usually find characters talking about each other in limited time event cards).
One example of a character page with the information you’re looking for is pictured below:
Please note that these are pronunciations based on Japanese. If these names were to be spoken in other languages (such as English), there would naturally be some differences just due to the prominence and/or lack of certain sounds per language. For example, Riddle would just be said as “ri-dul” in English, but it’s spoken as “Ridoru” in Japanese (since it’s not common for the “l” sound to end Japanese words; in fact, the phonetic /l/ doesn’t exist in Japanese altogether). Additionally, there is no “hard R” in Japanese, so names that end in the R sound (ie Cater, Dire Crowley) much “softer” (Cater -> Keito, Dire -> Dia). I go into more detail about the Cater and Crowley discrepancy here if you want to read more into it.
Another thing to consider is that there are some names in TWST that borrow from non-English languages. For instance, Felmier is French in origin, whereas Schoenheit is German. If these were spoken by a French/German speaker respectively, they would be pronounced differently than in English (an example: Schoenheit is usually said in English as “shoe-in-height”, but in German it sounds closer to “shen-height”.)
Even within English, there will inevitably be variations. It’s like how English speakers can’t agree on how to say “caramel” (is it “KARR-mul,” “KARR-uh-mel,” or “KARR-uh-mul”??). For example, some fans say Idia’s name like the word “idea”. However, others stay more true to the Japanese pronunciation of “Ih-dee-UH”. Neither is necessarily more “wrong” or “right” than the other, since there isn’t an official English dub with which to compare (and even within dubs, there may be pronunciation inconsistencies).
My general advice is 💦 don’t concern yourself with learning the “right” pronunciations of names, because there will still be little differences in how English-speakers say them anyway. As long as you and others can still understand what is being referred to, you should be all set!! 👍

The Diary of Doctor Laszlo Kreizler
Chapter 1
Synopsis: Alienist’s notes are private, sometimes gruesome, secrets of others and of himself. Those pages belongs to secrecy and decadence, have a glimpse to this world made of drafts, notes, accidents and reflections. Or maybe it is you the only person that should ever reach for it.
While you read this imagine Laszlo mostly at the end of his day, scraping the ideas and the thoughts, adjusting previous notes with additions, closing the day behind himself with a couple of sentences while sitting in his evening robe, a good glass of whiskey and his glasses bridged almost at the tip of his nose. Or maybe imagine yourself, you sneaky thing, reach for it from a far shelf.
Word count: 3k
Warnings: listen, this is the set of ideas and confessions of a man living in the 1890’s. Most of them will be outdated, rough, even deprecating in some analysis of the roles of men, women and social status, religion, etc.So be prepared, my point is to make Laszlo reflect upon those topics, but to be as faithful as I can to his time. Mention of death, mutilation, self harm and a minor depiction of a fight. Psychologically troubled young children ahead! Author’s note: I am a nerd for a good Victorian novel and a sexy Alienist.I have always been charmed by Laszlo’s mind and inner conflicts. So I took the chance and tried to have a run into that rollercoaster. The story is placed between season 1 and season 2.
Diary belonging to Dr. Laszlo Kreizler. This is a professional book of annotations over medical treatments of an alienist toward his patients. Do not disclose and send it back to the address if found: Kreizler’s Institute, xxxxxx, New York City (NY) L.K.
Samuel Griswold Goodrich, Illustrated Natural History of the Animal Kingdom (c1859). Contributed for digitization by University Library, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Schiller in his “Die Weltweisen” wrote: So long as philosophy keeps together the structure of the Universe so long does it maintain the world’s machinery by hunger and love. From the philosopher point of view sexual life takes a subordinate position in human’s life, from recent studies pushed by European philosophers, everything is about sexuality and its development. I like to think of the experience of being an alienist as the process of Queen Penelope that, while waiting for her husband Ulysses return, undoes her craftwork every night. I undo the fabulous constructs of people’s beliefs to go back to the rough sketch that stands at the beginning of their loss, their complex, their pain. Maybe that’s why working with children is so motivating and fascinating. They can be saved and yet, I am well aware, some of those sketches already traced in their young lives equal to scars that not even the most advanced theories could cure. But I can sooth them. I can prevent them the torment, the anguish, the recollection at night of those monsters. I feel like a poet would be a better alienist than a philosopher, but I have got no poetry nor philosophy in my veins, but the cold experience of the razor blade judgment of Life itself.
Today I observed a fight among the children at the Institute. Age range between 10 and 12. Boys. The fight was over the possession of a side of the playground, the territory of a pack of youngsters formed under the name of Steven. Peculiar lad, coming from a military background finds comfort in replicating the schemes he lived in his family. He takes the role of the Father/Captain of the team and subjects children that come from a similar background story, but do not posses his same attitude to the command. All quiet on the front, until the space he declared is own spot got affected by the presence of others. Intruders. I knowingly let the events unfold to see how Steven would react to his challenged authority. His reaction was, at first, worded, a sketch, a stage-play of an action he witnessed over and over, and he knew the part so well that some of the contending kids lowered their stance against him. Among considering to mildly intervene into this pyramid scheme of authority, another boy, Jan, calls himself on the role of the educator and hero of the masses and proceeds to unfold a wild and well assessed punch on the newly declared dictator face. Balance is established again. No need for me to arbitrate, once more the laws of nature seem to apply to children as in a state of nature.
Meet John Moore over lunch. His job at the newspaper is picking up, he is charmed by the spirits and the wits that he finds in his shared office with all the other writers. He mentions many, goes on and on over qualities and troubles, gossips and tendencies, and even little scandals here and there. To be aware of all those details gives me no interest, but to see a dear friend so invested clearly gives me something to pick up. To consider also the amount of details and the way he describes this or that member of the journal, I can do a small exercise of analysis. It is almost too easy because John is painfully genuine, even some of the kids at the institute would beat him hands down in a battle of lies. The more he likes somebody, the more he goes on about all the details and the characteristics, often letting aside the physical appearance. When he doesn’t like somebody he has a couple of adjectives for the wits and around four or five for the physical aspects that usually indulge on some repulsive idiosyncrasies. John is a man that painfully fits in the storyline of The Picture of Dorian Gray: to him physical beauty is spiritual beauty and, of course, the other way around. This part of him surely intrigues me, makes me want to tease more from him. But, as a friend, it concerns me as John is way too prone to purposelessly decide that somebody with good eyes is also a good human being, which is a very romantic and admirably naive way of judging matters. I noticed some names that keep repeating in his narration. I dread that it is synonymous of a soon encounter from my side with the objects of his admiration. Fetiches, I dare to say, that I will have to annihilate before they sediment into his mind, perpetuating a narration that soon sees John being mislead by others.
Reserved: Tickets for the Eroica, Symphony n. 3 by Ludwig van Beethoven. Thursday evening.
Note on the show: the first movement lacked the pathos needed to begin with, I am not sure that the guest orchestra really managed to portray the wider emotional ground needed to withstand the whole representation. As the evening progressed there were some outstanding performances by the cellists. Still not approving the choice of reprising the early quick finale movement against the lengthy set of variations and fugue that we are used to in presence of the Eroica. Underwhelming the performance of the horn and oboe, vital in the comprehension of the genius of Beethoven.
Niki is a new addition of the Institute, quite old for the standards. He is already 16, he will leave when summer ends to some expensive college his family meant him to stay. His parents expect me to make him “normal” in the time we are allowed together. He is Austrian and I let him act it out like I don’t understand German for the first week of hist stay until today. I believe I hit his pride, which is good, in the moment I answered back to one of his sneaky comments. Now he knows. He is not safe from me, he doesn’t like it. The young man has a tendency to danger, risky tasks and edgy situations. In his mother’s own words “Niki is not afraid of anything”. The phrase didn’t raise any excitement in the father, rather some sort of painful acceptance that is role as the alpha male of the house is probably not only being challenged, but already diminished, if not abolished. I have taken in consideration that Niki will break himself a bone or two in the process of the therapy, probably out of the spite of boredom or rebellion. It took him less than few days to turn himself into an outcast among the outcasts, which only drives me closer to analyse the complexity of his narcissistic wall of self defence. I gave him a physical challenge to lift a certain weight, he is a pretty skinny one, he didn’t like the challenge, but I am sure he will take it. He is a brainy guy, he hates to be questioned on unfamiliar ground. He won’t sleep at night thinking about it. A challenge, in this first phase, can only bring me closer to the ease of his pains. To continue the observation.
It is a sad privilege of medicine, in particular the one I practice, to be able to witness the weaknesses of the human nature and the reverse side of life. Nevertheless, I oblige this same privilege of the study as life moves into shades of darkness. To be aware of it gives more solace to my soul than to be victim of patiently waiting for the inevitable unfolding of the events. To be able to understand more about psychology would bring more comfort and elevation to any human being, the times might not be there yet, but eventually something will move into the direction of a more wholesome approach.
Dinner meeting with Sara Howard, at the restaurant Jardin Des Cygnes, 7 pm sharp. Do not expect to reach the dessert. Do not know if John will be participating due to undeniable tension among the two and the fatal despise of John over French cuisine.
The case that Sara unfolded tonight to my ears feels more and more like pulled out from some gothic book or from the mind of a Roman historian that needed to justify the godly origins of an Emperor. One killing, apparently random, a very constructed iconography over the body. Signs and insults, shapes and drawings. Is this a work of art? Does the killer wants his victim to be his Mona Lisa? His David? I am charmed and destabilised. If this was a murder like any other, then why to spend so much time into it? Based on the description the act of killing itself was quick: a sharp cut over the throat, almost like not wanting to ruin too much the surface to use as base for, what? I keep rerunning those symbols over and over as Sara described them to me, my mind is flooded with the designs of greek philosophers that needed to explain themselves why the sky is above our head and never collapses on us. Hilarious how, no matter the science advancement, in the mind of many the sky stands inevitably overt their shoulders, suffocates them, brings them to a death of the soul and not of the body. Is all this graphic charade indeed only a form to scream for attention? To stress the eyes of an unaware viewer? It seems ridiculously elaborate, a scream for attention would be quick, it would be like guided by instinct, not reasoning, craftwork. Any man with a knife can paint in blood red the walls of a room and that’s asking for attention. That is the primal howl: look at me! I am here! But this one. I don’t know yet.
Spent the early morning reading anew my copy of The Metamorphosis by Ovid. Didn’t touch it in a long time and I got bedazzled by the world of terrible sensuality, anger and selfishness of those gods and mortals. I think back at all the deviances and weaknesses of human kind and I try to relate it to all of those humanoid figures. Niki would be a minotaur, the lonesome son left in the labyrinth and his strive for success is his bull’s head. Or maybe a centaur, because of his wits and strategic thinking. I might keep up the process, maybe this is the way to understand my patients better, to understand the killer better. Must remember not to romanticise it. Greek gods were probably the first form of self indulging of a society that needed gods to be forgiving and allowing favours and punishments, but only in exchange of sacrifices. But the sacrifice never comes from the God’s will, but from the will of the man that perpetuates the act of killing. To sacrifice someone or something is the sadistic response to a lack of love deeply inherited in human mind that becomes neurotic. Is the killer giving the God of his own neurosis a body to feast upon?
I talked with Jan this morning. The young boy is about 10, but he acts like a full grown adult. I could easily asses that’s the reason why he could challenge Steven in that fight. Two children mimicking adults situations they know too well. Jan is son of an industrial man, but he is also son of the dialectics of the industrial revolution. He sounds like he swallowed some of those books about working class rights and communism, probably pushed by a resentful surrounding (mother?uncle? the midwife?) over the social role of his father. As much as incredibly smart and lectured, Jan lost most of his early occasions in life by spending a considerable amount of time using his fists. The anger ever present in the young boy always surprises me, he seems to be holding a power, a strength of a full grown man in those tiny arms. Nevertheless, he is already the tallest of the group. He is surely an idealist, which makes him also tragically fragile. His strength mixed with his heart of gold can make him the best of the heroes or the worst of the villains. He apologised for the fight, he specified how he didn’t like the sound of Steven’s voice, more than the sound, the level of pitch. I can’t stand somebody shouting orders, I just don’t listen anymore. He is so mature even about his own feelings, almost a gentleman in his chivalry toward the weaker children, honest with his open heart and resentful against any form of injustice. I am not spared by his ways, he would come at me whenever he feels like I was being partial over some of the kids, his sense of justice blinds him and transform a perfectly balanced boy into a ranging animal.
Ordered book, to be delivered around tomorrow evening: Introduction à la méthode de Léonard de Vinci by Paul Valéry. Suddenly feeling myself as a gross ignorant in art themes. I always regarded myself aware of the artistic personalities and tendencies of present and past, but this new amount of perceptions over the human figure and the human body leads me to document myself more. I could ask John for advice, but he wouldn’t take things at matter that seriously. I can almost hear him say how I can make gruesome a pleasant topic such as art. I should probably wait to see the body to push any further aesthetic study, but I find myself not being able to stop. I reckon, I can allow myself a vice or two.
Today I saw the body of the killed man, courtesy of the Isaacson's. To be fair, I had underestimated it. In Sara’s descriptions, probably due to her more analytic mind, all the charm of the representation got lost in favour of a less cryptic and reasonable understanding of the act. Sara got what some alienists will call a masculine mind, which I don’t perfectly agree on. If I apply that same approach John would be a very feminine mind, all wrapped up in romanticising even the ugliest. I guess that dividing the world in “fragile and gentle” and “strong and powerful” is just easier to explain the fluctuation of something that doesn’t need a real name or a category like human inclinations on thoughts. I got a feverish sense of patience by looking at the body. Each symbol traced with sapient slowness, dense of the time that the killer spent with the body. That is a work of hours, he had time and meaning. He had resources and was able to spend not less than the time he needed to reach, a vision? An ideal? A message? Is it the message meant to be understood? Am I supposed to unravel it or it is maybe just the way the killer communicates within himself? And if I do decifrate the code, will that bring me closer to him? Or to his next victim?
Reminder: ask John to replicate all the symbols on the bodies in the correct measure and order. It might be needed some hard convincing. Addition: scheduled meeting, his house, 3 pm.
It wasn’t a day like any other when I met you. Or maybe it was, and that’s why I got so struck by it and now I am here playing it over and over through what my memory clung on so desperately. In my own experience, life was often similar to swimming in a lake. Those rich, dense lakes in the north of (illegible cancelled word) were my father used to bring us during summer. I still feel the pull, the draw down toward the abyss. It ashamed me, in a way, the fear that such a simple feeling aroused in my young mind, unaware nevertheless, that such a feeling would follow me through all my existence. It was a prophecy and, like most of the prophecies, was a riddle. I cradle in my heart the charm of those days, the mindless happiness. The foolish feeling of freedom. Little I knew that freedom would be taken away from me that soon, that the body that used to navigate me over the dense waters, helping me to fight the haul toward the unknown, would become my own cage. That day. Today. The day where I met you, the day I was afloat. The child gasping for air felt the wrench become a gentle push and now he is floating on his back over the scary waters of reality and malice. It gave me relief and it gave me terror, because since that very moment I knew that I would never be able to move on from the sight of you. From the feeling of your eyes lingering on me. From the smile you so easily shone upon me. From the whiff of imported perfume that hit me when you turned on side exploding that swan like neck. And nothing, not even my stern look, could dim that wave of hope that your sole presence washed over me. The abyss roars, calls me to a home of damnation and terror and curses my name and yet you repeated that hell-bound name of mine after me and I felt safe.
John told me so much about you, it feels like I have always known you.
The rope is gone from my neck, the guillotine won’t fall on me, I am spared, I am free.
I have read your latest article, I am thrilled to help with the case.
I am in disbelief.
Your voice.
Dr. Kreizler
How dare you? How dare you to come into my life, to appear, like a vision, mystical, in a way I despised at University when all those theology students talked about the divine. In this very moment I can’t recollect much of what you said, something about the case, about going with John at the obituary. It feels confusing, I feel overstimulated, my memory fails me, I am not sure anymore. I write these few lines and it is passed the hour of the witches and I wish, I demand, to never see you again, because life should never grant hope to a condemned man.

Conspiracy paranoia is a recurrent cultural phenomenon especially in American political life, with successive waves of anti-Masonism, anti-Catholicism, anti-Communism etc

Constructivism's basic epistemological principle is that all our cognitive operations, including (or especially) perception itself, are theory-dependent. This means, first of all, that data do not exist independently of a theory that constitutes them as data.
Granted the theory-dependency of "facts", it follows that faithfulness to objective "truth" cannot be a criterion for evaluating versions of reality (since the truth will have been produced by the version that is being evaluated by its faithfulness to the truth, and so on, circularly). The appropriate criteria for evaluation now are, for instance, the explicitness of the version, its intersubjective accessibility, its "empirical-mindedness", i.e. its aspiration to be as empirical as possible, where empiricism is not a method but a horizon to be approached only asymptotically; and above all, the adequacy of the version to its intended purpose. In other words, constructions, or what I have been calling versions of reality, are strategic in nature, that is, designed with particular purposes in view.

I have been watching protest of the Women's Strike. On my phone, at my desk, at home, later from bed. I have been unable to attend due to my deteriorating mental health condition. How to describe the feeling and the atmosphere of this protest? I will juxtapose the following:
Hierarchy - Presence - Genital - Narrative - Metaphysics - Determinacy - Construction of a world-model - Ontological certainty [modernism]
Anarchy - Absence - Polymorphous - Anti-narrative - Irony - Indeterminacy - Deconstruction of a world-model - Ontological uncertainty [postmodernism]
What I saw leads me to believe that I should associate my perception of protests with the latter column.

Vril: Maria Orsic who prominent Thule Society members believed was psychically communicating with beings from Aldeberaan and/or inner earth. Orsic’s psychic information appeared genuine after providing the secrets of advanced technologies that would make space travel possible and also offered to transform German society by giving its citizens first hand knowledge of a mysterious universal force called Vril. Antarctica’s Hidden History corporate Foundations of Secret Space Programs Dr. Michael Salla
Description of Vril in Power of the Coming Race. There is no word in any language I know which is an exact synonym for vril. I should call it electricity, except that it comprehends in its manifold branches other forces of nature, to which in our scientific nomenclature, differing names are assigned, such as magnetism, galvanism, etc…These people consider that in vril they have arrived at the unity in natural energetic agencies which has been conjectured by many philosophers above ground and which Faraday thus intimates under the more caution term of correlation… Pg 14 Vril: The Power of the Coming Race Edward Bulwer-Lytton
These subterranean philosophers assert that by one operation of vril, which Faraday would perhaps call “atmospheric magnetism,” they can influence the variation of temperature in plain words, the weather, that by operations akin to those ascribed to mesmerism , electro biology, Odin force, but applied scientifically, through vril conductors, they can exert influence over minds and bodies animal and vegetable to an extent not surpassed in the romances of our mystics. Vril: The Power of the Coming Race Edward Bulwer-Lytton
U.S. Thomas Townsend Brown “There is a decided tendency in the physical sciences to unify the great basic laws and to relate by a single structure or mechanism, such individual phenomena as gravitation, electro dynamics and even matter itself. It is found that matter and electricity are very closely related in structure. In the final analysis matter loses its traditional individuality and becomes merely an “electrical condition.” In fact it might be said that the concrete body if the universe is nothing more than an assemblage of energy which in itself is quite intangible. Of course, it is self evident that matter is connected with gravitation and it follows logically that electricity is likewise connected. These relations exist in the realm of pure energy and consequently are very basic in nature. In all reality they constitute the true backbone of the universe. It is needless to say that the relations are not simple and full understanding of their concepts is complicated by the outstanding lack of information and research on the real nature of gravitation.
Vril for energy and healing: The fluid is capable of being raised and disciplined into the mightiest agency over all forms of matter, animate or inanimate. It can destroy like the flash of lightning yet differently applied it can replenish or invigorate life, heal and preserve and on it they chiefly rely for cure of disease, or rather for enabling the physical organization to re-establish the due equilibrium of its natural powers and thereby to cure itself. By this agency they send way through the most solid substances and open valleys for culture through the cracks of their subterranean wilderness. From it they extract the light which supplies their lamps finding it steadier softer and healthier than the other inflammable materials they had formerly used. Vril: The Power of the Coming Race Edward Bulwer-Lytton
But the effects of the alleged discovery of the means to direct the more terrible force of vril were chiefly remarkable in their influence upon social polity. As these effects became similarly known and skillfully administered, war between the vril-discoverers ceased, for they brought the art of destruction to such perfection as to annul all superiority in numbers, discipline or military skill. The fire lodged in the hollow of a rod directed by the hand of a child could shatter the strongest fortress, or cleave it’s burning way from the van to the near of an embattled host. If army met army and both had command of this agency it could be but to the annihilation of each. The age of war was therefore gone, but with the cessation of war other effects bearing upon the social state soon apparent. Man was so completely at the mercy of man, each whom he encountered being able, If so willing to slay him on the instant, that all means of government by force gradually vanished from political systems and forms of law. It is only by force that vast communities, dispersed through great distances of space, can be kept together; but now there was no longer either the necessity of self preservation or the pride of aggrandizement to make one state desire to preponderance inpopulation over another. Vril: The Power of the Coming Race Edward Bulwer-Lytton
Discussion of Vril and Zero Point “
Belief in psychokinesis-the ability of the mind to influence the physical world, say a firearm,” she said nodding at the screen’s endless loop of footage, “ is generally considered a debased form of metaphysics a kind of mysticism which in the absence of responsible religious tradition to back it up, is easily dismissed as pseudoscientific fantasy. But there are various brands of pre scientific mysticism that put mind over matter, seeing the power of consciousness itself as a way to affect the world -faith healing say, or levitation. The concept of energy fields connecting all things is ancient wisdom in matters of religion. Think of the notion of chi or ki in various East Asian cultures the life force that binds things together and sustains them. “And Star Wars certainly borrowed some ideas about the force from China, Japan and other neighboring regions. But what if it isn’t the stuff of space opera fantasy? What if we stopped viewing these ideas in the contemptuous terms of anti science and the primitive? What if we were able to assimilate both positions as compatible within an expanded notion of physics, a unified theory, if you like which recognizes that the metaphysical concerns of the human mind-including so called paranormal capacities-can coexist harmoniously in a strictly scientific notion of the universe?” - Sekret Machines A Fire Within pg 293.
Have you ever heard of zero point energy?
“It’s also called ground state energy.’ said Hayes. “According to quantum mechanics, it’s an all pervasive energetic field that is random, ambient and fluctuating. What’s interesting about zero point energy is that it exists even in so called empty space. So instead of thinking of the universe as a collection of isolated particles, we have to view the universe as made up of continuous fields the quanta and fermions of matter fields and the quanta and bosons of force fields.” - Sekret Machines A Fire Within pg 293.
“Right from its birth the CIA has been in the movie business.” - Sekret Machines A Fire Within Pg 117
“But in our society we attach fame to nothing which man in that moment of his duration which is called life, can perform. We should soon lose that equality which constitutes the felicitous essence of our commonwealth if we selected any individual for preeminent praise; preeminent praise would confer pre-eminent power and the moment it were given, evil passions now dormant would awake other men would immediately covet praise, then would arise envy and with envy hate calumny and persecution Our history tells us that most of the poets and most of the writers who in the old time were on the whole rendered very unhappy, partly by the attacks of jealous rivals, partly by the diseased mental constitution which acquired sensitive ness to praise and to blame tends to engender.” -Taee of the Vril-ya Vril: The Power of the Coming Race Edward Bulwer-Lytton

A Year in Language, Day 336: Musing: On drinking games, memes, and dialects. People who drink with me know that I like to make everything into a game. In general, the aspects of drinking culture I enjoy are the ones that involve ritual and camaraderie. My favorite drinking game is known to me as "King's Cup". I say "known to me" because I have come to learn that this game goes by many different names and even more variations on the rules. One of my favorite things when introducing the game to new people is learning the local variation they are familiar with. The game is always recognizable: you have a deck of cards, normally spread in a ring. You take turns drawing cards, each number assigning a different effect to determine who drinks that round. What those effects are, the specific layout of the cards, inclusion of jokers, pre-game rules, and additional items (like a cup in the middle of the ring) are all quite flexible. This is interesting, because it's definitely not how most games work. Sit down for a game of poker, speed, old maid, etc. and chances are the rules will be the same anywhere you go, at least as long as you're within the same country. Chess, checkers, go, etc, are likewise going to have common rules, even though no single organization has exclusive rights to these games or their rules. And, it should be noted, my King's Cup isn't alone in its variability; most drinking games I know of have similar patterns of intense variation. So what gives, and how is this coming back to languages? I think to get a good perspective on where I'm going with this, it's time for a brief talk about memes. When I say "meme" here I don't just mean fun pictures shared on the internet, though those are included. I am using it in its "original" sense, the idea of a cultural gene i.e. some molecular aspect of culture that, like genes, can be spread, can mutate and evolve, and can die out. The concept of the "knock knock joke" is a meme. Dabbing is a meme. Taking your hat off in respect is a meme. And so on. The important thing to remember about memes is that their existence is dependent on being spread from one person to the next. The more widely shared an experience, the more potent the meme. Standard card and board games are, well, standard. We all know them. Many of them have international games that demand some kind of regulation. Mutations in the meme, e.x. a particular chess clubs wacky pastime variant or a version of poker your learned once at summer camp, must compete with the preexisting one if they hope to pass on. For memes as established and universal as chess, this is a tall order. But what if chess did not have international tournaments. What if different companies printed card decks a little differently (one prints pages instead of Jacks, donuts instead of clovers, used a different color for each suit, etc.). The meme then may be less strong and a popular mutation could better overtake the preexisting standard. This is how drinking games work: there are no standards, no regulatory bodies, and they are played in very casual environments. If you learned your version of King's Cup from your friend Chad in college, then you'll know it only exactly as he told you, or, more precisely, exactly as you remember him telling you. If you bring the game to another group no one is going to fact check you. Why would they even? There are no stakes, it's just a pastime. So popular drinking game memes are able to replicate themselves well enough, passing from group to group by virtue of the good times they enabled, but they don't self regulate at all, so mutation is high. This is a post in a language series, right? Right. I find Americans have a strange view of language. We generally assume that most of the world works like we do; you have countries, and in each country there is a language with a single standard that everyone speaks. Obviously Americans are aware its not that simple, even our own country doesn't function like that, but that idea, as an underlying principle that reality is simply a bit messier than the ideal, is not just inaccurate, it's artificial and directly counter to reality. Part of this view comes from the fact that most Americans are monolingual and speak an imported language. When I first went to England, from which our American English is imported, I knew there would be many different English accents, but even I was shocked by just how many, and how different, and how many I would hear regularly just in one town on an island many times smaller than my native Texas, which has about 2-3 distinctive native accents, most of which are more similar to each other than the average pair of accents I would hear in England. We may be tempted to think of language as being more like chess than kings cup, but this is an affect of modernity and strengthened in colonial nations where the dialects of mother tongues have bottle-necked. With dictionaries, mass media, widespread literacy, and literal standards our language can seem very universal and lacking in variety, but this was not the case for most of history. For much of history, depending on what part of the world you came from, language was something only a certain class of scholars or aristocrats cared to think to hard about. For everyone else... it was just how you spoke, no need to assess further. If a popular figure in your town coins a phrase, it may spread to everyone in your town and persist across generations, but its possible no one the town over knows what y'all are on about. Maybe on your island certain words have become taboo due to events in that islands specific history, but your cousins on the next island follow no such tradition. For much of history language was unregulated, sparsely written, and influenced only by as much as it needed to be to do its job and enable humans to communicate. And while standards and writing have leveled the field a bit, for much of the world the impact of this history is still very apparent. And I'm not just talking about such linguistic hot spots like India or Papua New Guinea. Try to find good resources on Norwegian and you'll quickly find that there are a lot of Nowegians to choose from. Standard High German is very practical, but may still find you lost in northern Low German speaking regions or down south in Bavaria. Modern mediums for meme transference are still young, and their lasting impact on language is yet to be truly known.

it must be a thursday (3/?)
Kei has more friends than just Isobu, and it’s high time she ran into one.
Chapter Three: Path of the Seeker
Gustav surprised me with a gift on the morning we got to the first big stop I’d be around to see.
“You can’t make it anywhere in the Empire without papers,” Gustav said with a grin. In his ink-stained hands, he held a sheaf of papers and dropped them in her hands. “I didn’t know if you’d want a last name, so I just picked something that sort of sounded right. Just make sure to memorize it so the Crownsguard don’t catch you in a lie, all right?”
Given that I was not, in fact, named “Caretta Schiavoni” and probably didn’t look the part, I had to wonder where Gustav had gotten the idea. Aside from Molly, Desmond, and Gustav, I hadn’t exactly heard anybody else make much use of last names.
Ah, well. I’d been lying since I got here.
“Thank you very much, Gustav.” I bowed deeply over the glorified passport. “You’ve been very kind to me.”
“It’s all right. One good turn deserves another, and you’ve been a model guest.”
“Can you two please hurry that up? The station’s just around the bend,” said Desmond, and Gustav took his place at the head of the caravan with a spring in his spindly step.
Is that like your ninja registration number?
A little. As I checked on Isobu to make sure he was still locked in a costume trunk in the back of my wagon—driven by Ornna—I replied, In hindsight, I probably should have asked about official documentation before. I’ve just never been in a contiguous empire long enough to think about it.
We have been skating laws with wild abandon. Doing so is more fun. Isobu sent me the image of the inside view of the trunk to confirm he was still there, then added, Have you told any of them your plans?
Not yet. Once we get safely into town.
Isobu hummed a sad little note. Then, I hate this.
I didn’t have to ask what he meant.
Even putting aside how much freedom Isobu won for himself over the years, being slammed back down into a shape he didn’t ask for had to be a major setback. The freedom to move in the world didn’t feel complete when he couldn’t be sure he’d keep it. I didn’t know enough about this world to be sure if Isobu’s appearance would let him really wander freely, like he had when we were out in the Grand Line. Every day he had to spend like this, he was kicked in the face with reminders of his relative powerlessness. Worse yet, I’d heard him calling for his siblings late at night on my watch. There was never any response.
We’ll make it back to them, I assured him. Maybe not today, or tomorrow, but we’ll go home.
Isobu grunted something indecipherable and ignored me. Fair enough.
Honestly, letting that conversation lie was as much for his benefit as it was mine. I didn’t really want to talk homesickness.
I did, however, want to talk about my job with the circus. Gustav’s passport thing said my work specialty was “sword juggling.” Being asked to prove that sounded like a terrible idea for everybody.
“Ornna,” I began quietly, “once we reach town and Molly and Yasha start their rounds, can I spend a little time on my own instead?”
Ornna snorted. “Do whatever you want. You’re a grown woman.”
No snide comment about how I’m not a member of the circus anyway? She must like me. “Thank you, Ornna. I’ll make sure tell Gustav.”
And to be honest, well, I might’ve just wandered around street corners and explored the town. New places with German names were definitely outside of my experience as either a jōnin or an adopted pirate, and I’d heard weird things about Oktoberfest in a lifetime or two. Even if this was just any fishing town, I at least wanted a chance to take a damn bath. I’d been listening intently to the carnival crew for any indication of what civilized life was like compared to the life of a roadie, though, since I hadn’t asked questions, I only knew that Molly was magnetically attracted to bathhouses. Road dust and road sweat and no internal plumbing made for a very grumpy Kei, gotta say.
But I started picking out little flickers of something as we entered Trostenwald.
I’d known for years that people with chakra suppression skills could slip by me if they were good enough, especially because my range was a fifty kilometer radius. The best of the best, like Orochimaru, tended to be the types who could waltz right up to me and do jazz hands behind my head without me noticing. ANBU weren’t quite as good, and most shinobi far less stealthy than that.
Rin wasn’t even trying.
I stuck around long enough to help set up the big top tent and the performers’ common areas. Yasha ended up not needing my help at all, so all I had to do after that was make sure no one else wanted an extra pair of hands in the mix. But after Ornna and Toya both shrugged off any assistance with makeup, because they’d done shows without my amateur ass before and intended to continue, I let Gustav know I’d be taking a day off and disappeared into the city.
I probably didn’t read half the signs, honestly. I skipped checking out breweries and apothecaries, didn’t get anywhere near Crownsguard strongholds or the seat of any government, and doubled down on my earlier resolution to avoid people.
This somehow put me on the opposite side of the entire city from the circus, still chasing the sensation of an autumn afternoon. Subtly, of course. (Or under a transformation technique to make myself look human again.) Even if I hadn’t seen anyone spit at Molly or Bo while on the road, I knew enough to guess a country with established racial slurs for my current appearance probably had an attitude behind it. The power to punch people out on a whim was more useful in lawless backcountry when the only people around wanted to use your bones as soup stock. In an established city? Hah, no.
The chakra jumped from one alleyway to the next in my mind’s eye. While perhaps not my best plan, I sent a pulse of my chakra outward as I passed in front of the second row of buildings. Rin wasn’t much of a sensor unless in the middle of an exam, but hopefully she’d pick up something about me she recognized.
It didn’t take that long.
As soon as I spotted a familiar figure, I was already heading right for her. “Is that really you?”
Rin, though short and slight compared to a lot of the local humans, probably would have stood out for other reasons. I hadn’t seen a single Asian-adjacent person in the week I’d been hanging with the circus. Logically, I knew small towns didn’t tend to be the most diverse places, but I’d met or seen at least twenty nonhumans. The only one with Asian features had been my reflection. Rin’s long, dark hair was bound up in a braid and she wasn’t wearing skirt and blouses she preferred in Konoha—due to transformation chicanery—but she was still recognizable.
Not exactly the same as my situation.
“It’d be hard for me to be anyone else.” Rin ducked her head a little and looked up at me through her bangs. “So. How was your week?”
Her normally-dark eyes were entirely different, reflecting light like a cat’s and her irises were streaked with blue, green, and purple. Her smile wobbled uncertainly. Rin’s hair caught the light strangely, reflecting red and violet in turn. Her chakra felt different, with an edge I couldn’t fully identify. Most of the chakra signatures I was used to were half-sensory data generally incongruous with people. I could compare them to shadows, or cheerful little fires, or lightning strikes.
I’d never run into a variation that felt like singing.
It felt like the damned mission objective from before this clusterfuck started.
Ugh, thought for later. I replied instead, “Not even a week. It’s…been interesting. Sorry I didn’t come find you sooner.”
“I mean, it wasn’t so bad. Not the worst survival training I’ve had!” Then she hugged me hard enough to make me think of crying uncle, if I hadn’t been doing the same right back. Dammit, I’d missed Rin. “But we’re both safe. That’s something. ”
“I went straight into survival mode,” I admitted after we pulled apart a bit. She still had one of my hands in hers, and was performing a medical scan even as I spoke. “There were some travelers who dragged me out of a river. I came in with them just this morning.”
“That’s…a little more adventurous than what I’ve been doing,” Rin said. She peered up at me, curiosity alight in her eyes. “Kei, you’re not using Isobu’s chakra, are you? It doesn’t quite feel like that, but your biology is very different right now. What happened?”
“Well…” I dropped the pretense of still looking human. “I got a makeover.”
Rin paused with her mouth dropping open in shock. Now that she knew where my horns were, she hesitated for a second with a fingertip a little above the central one. Even as she touched it, her expression was briefly unreadable even as her chakra started to jump up and down in excitement.
“Been thinking of filing that one down,” I mumbled.
“You look a little like an oni,” Rin breathed, a smile slowly spreading across her face. There was no way I was getting away from her now, and I’d never been happier to be on the recieving end of Rin’s fantastic gush sessions. “This is why your scan was so strange! Do those horns weigh you down? And the tail—that’s Isobu-san’s tail with fewer plates, isn’t it? Did someone modify pants for you? Are you feeling strange any other way?
“Um… So about...” I made a sweeping motion to encompass everything that had changed about my body.
“So I’m glad you’re here. You’re still Kei, even if you’re different-looking now.” Rin nodded firmly. “Aside from the obvious, nothing really changed! So, what else is different? You were vague about the week.”
“I… I’m pretty sure I joined a circus.”
Rin said nothing for a second.
I raised an eyebrow. “That’s what throws you off?”
“I really can’t imagine you wearing makeup and performing for the public.” Rin was obviously biting down a laugh. “You don’t even put on foundation during ceremonies back home!”
I rolled my eyes. “With one exception. And when you’re doing all the work for me.”
“Exactly!”
Still, we were making our way out of the alleyways and back toward the rest of town. I didn’t particularly care about being seen as a tiefling once I wasn’t alone. Some things invited a fight. A pair of foreign tourists would probably invite scams first, provided no one decided to ask for papers I was sure Rini didn’t have. It was Rin’s first time in a world where she wasn’t aligned with the legal authority anywhere. Konoha backed us. Nobody here would.
“I’m going to need to get Isobu to translate for you when I can’t,” I said while we walked. “The main language here is the same one those star people spoke. Sorry.”
To answer me, Rin sighed, “That explains a lot.” Rin’s focus stayed mostly on me as we walked through town, though I could see her glancing around at the various buildings that didn’t look at all like home. Hadn’t seen any steeple roofs yet, though.
I am about as happy with this as she is. The circus does not know I can talk.
Rin was adaptable, though. She got along well with Isobu in at least a theoretical sense, because to my knowledge they almost never directly interacted. Rin’s focus was on medicine, so she had a fantastic time quizzing me and other experts about how Tailed Beasts lived and could function as chakra given form. I’d never met a Tailed Beast I didn’t think Rin would gush over, because her fascination overrode what most people could consider healthy fear.
It was kind of the opposite of how Isobu interacted with most of the circus. Isobu had a lot more fun messing with them that he ever would with Rin.
“How’s this town been to you?” I asked instead.
“Not super great.” Rin put a finger to her lips as she thought. “I mean, I didn’t get anything like the negative reaction I’ve seen directed at other people, but I can’t talk to anyone here. I’ve been stealing a lot.” She paused for a second as we ducked past a pair of halflings hawking fish, sizing them up before continuing her thought. “Things feel tense here. It’s not just about me. You can feel it too, right?”
The humans are mobilizing.
I repeated this remark for Rin’s benefit, and her brow furrowed.
While maps were in short supply in the era before printing presses—which was a fact I hated for several reasons—I knew enough about the local geography to figure rural Trostenwald and the villages I’d passed were in the southern end of a massive empire. I couldn’t recall offhand what the other towns were called without a way to check my spelling, but I’d been listening to town criers. Such as there were, in such tiny communities.
Somebody up to the north and east was trying to start shit.
“That said,” I added once I’d explained my limited information, “I wanted to mention the whole ‘human’ thing we keep using as shorthand.”
“I know neither of us are fully human anymore, but I don’t want to call anyone ‘yōkai’ when it doesn’t fit.” Rin eyed the street again, and between the two of us we picked out at least half a dozen different races without a problem. A fifth of the town’s population seemed to be halflings, while humans made up a decent chunk of the other eighty percent. That said, there were also half-orcs besides Bo, a single humanoid white dragon without wings, and half-elves here and there. “It’s disrespectful even if no one else understands me. But do you know what everyone would be called?”
“I’d have to ask a few specific questions, but yes. Mostly.” I pointed at my face, at my flat yellow eyes and otherwise quite eye-catching palette. “I’m a tiefling, for example.” Or I looked the part, at least. “There’s another one in the circus, but he looks different. Ten to one Isobu’s influence is the reason I look specifically like this.”
I heard that.
“Interesting. That must mean there’s an established population, right? Or more than one. The horns are probably…genetic?” Rin looked thoughtful again. “Hm… Outside of Curse Seal transformations, I’ve never seen humans with tails or horns. That said, transformations outside of surface-level techniques are definitely possible. I’d only have to look at the Inuzuka clan know that.” She thought that over. “Any idea how this happened?”
“Not a damn clue,” I admitted. “I just—maybe that mission…” If only I could remember clearly what the hell had happened.
“Could be,” Rin agreed softly.
But the rest of that conversation was put on hold by a quick hand signal as I spotted a familiar duo winding their way through the streets. They hadn’t seen us yet, but frankly? If anybody could miss a pair like Molly, the walking kaleidoscope, and Yasha, death metal incarnate, as they passed out fliers with smarmy charm and a solid dash of silent intimidation, I hadn’t met them yet.
Rin followed my gaze in the brief second I gave myself away. “Circus?”
“Circus,” I confirmed. As we changed our path from aimless wandering to an intercept course, I added, “And they think my name’s ‘Caretta’ right now. In case it comes up.”
“I don’t speak their language, remember?” Rin reminded me mildly. When I looked, she had her hands clasped demurely and amusement sparked faintly through her. “I’m sure they’ll be looking to you first.”
Bleh. “We really need to get Isobu on this translating thing.”
Ugh.
Rin fell entirely silent as we sized up the Nestled Nook Inn, which was two stories tall and probably only large enough to have half a dozen rooms. Not impressive, but my standards were fucked and the circus probably had an established circuit even in these small towns.
Molly and Yasha wouldn’t stay long, because the shock of a walking rainbow headbutting his way into an unrelated conversation only worked so many times with witnesses. Which was why Yasha was there. Molly might’ve been taller than either Rin or Kei were, but Yasha could pick up two grown men and bash them together until they stopped causing trouble. Being a bouncer must’ve been interesting. No one would cause trouble this early in the morning, right?
With that middle finger firmly directed toward whatever patron of luck I’d already pissed off by existing, I headed inside anyway.
Rin followed, though she stayed back to keep any eye on the entire room from a spot beside the door. She was enthusiastic and bright when everyone around could understand her comments, but she wasn’t nearly as imposing as anybody in this roughneck place. She was happier keeping in the background unless she had to watch over genin. Or the civilians that genin inevitably ran roughshod over while trying to help.
Funny how Yasha was doing the same thing, just on the opposite side of the doorway. I didn’t make it past either of them.
“—It’s just five copper. A steal. At five silver, it would be a steal, at five gold?” Molly rattled off, his spiel landing two table’s worth of fish. I picked out two humans, a blue tiefling—who looked a lot more like Molly than she did like me—a half-orc and a tiny figure who might’ve been a halfling. There was a tiny part of my brain that said “adventurers!” before it went quiet under Isobu’s laughter. “Worth every penny. But if you’ve got the five copper to spend, we would happily have you all.”
The blue tiefling was starry-eyed already. “Do you perform?”
Molly hardly missed a beat. He did look like a sword-juggler or something, after all. I sure didn’t. “Ah. I’m less of a performer and more of an intermediary for these parts. I do on occasion perform. I can read fortunes—”
“I was going to ask if you read fortunes! Can you do one now?” the blue tiefling asked, almost bouncing in her seat.
Molly grinned. Hook, line, sinker. “I knew you were going to ask that.”
“Oh my gosh, you’re so smart. Look at this guy, he knows everything!” And with that, she made a space for him at her group’s table without a second’s pause.
“Yasha,” I said in an undertone, because there was no way I was throwing Molly off a roll like that.
Yasha did fix both odd-colored eyes on me, just for a bit, and Rin stood tall as she realized I’d called someone out by name. Especially a name she’d easily be able to pronounce. Yasha’s gaze flicked to Rin, widened a bit, but there was a nervous edge there. She wouldn’t want to talk about it.
“Is everything going well?” I asked.
“I think so,” Yasha said, already turning her attention back to Molly’s audience with an air of trying really hard to avoid a conversation. I didn’t know what that was about. “Um, excuse me.”
“Yasha’s quiet,” I told Rin once she was embroiled in that little scene. “You’ll like her.”
“Have we seen what we need to?” Rini asked, though she couldn’t quite hide the tiny spark of curiosity. It wasn’t as though this town was swimming in doctors or biological standouts other than the obvious. Her interests were pretty well self-contained.
“Yeah, mainly. I could try to catch them on the way out, but it seems like they’re busy.” A thought occurred to me. “You know, we kind of match?”
“Hm?”
“Brightly colored tiefling and someone with slightly less obvious nonhuman features. It’s kind of neat.”
Rin smiled, her long braid waving behind her as she swayed from side to side. “To Isobu?”
“Sure.”
In a town where the only famous export seemed to be three kinds of beer, ale, or whatever it was this week, people drinking in the streets probably wouldn’t have put most people off. But since Rin disliked the smell and taste of alcohol, we cut past the crowds wherever possible. In no time at all, we were in the circus staging area well ahead of the impending night crowd.
I managed to make introductions to the group without stumbling too badly over myself, or maybe Ornna was just taking pity on me for once. The line was pretty thin with her, and despite the language barrier Rin busted out the mission diplomat skill-set like it’d never gathered dust in the first place. It mostly consisted of bowing with perfect poise and prompting me with observations to translate when I couldn’t think of anything worth saying, but overall I think we made a decent impression. Rin even got to keep her real name, because Rin didn’t give a shit about nicknames.
Which she would get, and in spades, once the rest of the group got back. Probably.
Rin went to retrieve Isobu—who was apparently stalking Kylre to a degree that was genuinely worrying poor Toya—Gustav pulled me aside for a second.
“How can I help?” I asked automatically.
“I hate to ask,” Gustav said as I wrung my hands, “but do you mind just sticking around for the show tonight?”
“I—huh? I mean…” I blinked. It wasn’t like I was that familiar with this town. And even if I was, comfort zones were a thing. I was, by however narrow a margin, much more inclined to follow the circus around than I was to rent a room in Trostenwald with the money I didn’t have. “I mean, I don’t…”
I’d just introduced Rin to them., so I kind of wanted the afternoon off. And the evening. An afternoon of catching up was not making up for the week I’d avoided thinking about my situation for fear of triggering my homesickness like a rising tide. And Rin needed help getting around, too. I wanted to sit her down with a local encyclopedia so we could pool our ignorance and start figuring out how to get out of here.
“Not as an attendee,” Gustav clarified quickly, and suddenly his hesitance made more sense. Slightly. “Could you help out around the grounds for a few hours? I know we haven’t paid you, but it seems like Molly and Yasha are going to be drawing quite a crowd. We could use just a little help.”
Because I was a pushover, I said, “Just let me know where you need me.”
“And your…” Gustav paused, grasping at a word before settling in, “Partner? Well, she can hang around. And you can both attend the show for free if you like. I know Ornna will complain, but you’ve earned a ticket for anyone you can name. Just one, though, or Ornna actually will have me by the ears this time.”
I couldn’t decide if Isobu was going to be offended more over not being invited or not counting as a person.
Both.
You’ll be a closed-captioning device. It gives you an excuse to talk the entire time!
I thought you said people who talked in the theater went to hell.
Like that’s a deterrent for you.
True.
“I’ll be there, Gustav,” I said, and that was about the point when Rin and Isobu came back. I did my best to surreptitiously point them out to Gustav. “But I’ll be in the city instead of attending if I can have the evening off. I hope you understand.”
Gustav’s eyebrows rose. “Oh, I think I do.”
Isobu had wrapped both of his outside tails around Rin’s waist, with his hands gripping the shoulder pads of what only looked like a plain, long coat. His little spiked head poked out from behind Rin’s thick braid of faintly iridescent hair, and his eye glared balefully at me for having asked him to submit to such an indignity. As though he didn’t like riding on people’s shoulders and ordering them around.
Pff.
“Oh, hey Gustav?” I said, before the ringmaster could amble away.
“Hm?”
“Watch this.” I cleared my throat and, with a wicked little smile hidden deep down, I said, “Isobu, speak.”
Isobu glared at me harder. “I am not some pet performing tricks! I demand compensation for this flagrant abuse of my talents.” Silently, while Gustav looked between the demonic turtle and Rin—who was looking as innocent as a possible ventriloquist could—Isobu added, Did I do that right?
Perfectly.
Even with her charming smile I had to admit Rin was a likely culprit, and Gustav zeroed in on her immediately. “Nice trick.”
Rin shrugged, once she’d heard Isobu’s quiet translation. “I can’t tell him what to do.”
“Damn right.”
Isobu and Rin ended up spending most of the afternoon trailing me around. While they did get to have lunch with me and the circus crew—though Isobu didn’t eat—most of their day consisted of training. I worked to help set up the evening’s show, as biddable as any roadie, though sometimes Ornna would pop by and tell me to tie knots differently or else something would tip over. Sometimes I’d overhear Isobu and Rin’s bursts of Japanese as the pair talked, with Isobu acting sort of as a guide where I couldn’t.
“That is Kylre, who smells as much like sulfur as fish. Kei told me he is a lizardfolk, and he is very close with Toya.” Isobu said while they walked past the “dressing room,” which Kylre was about a half a meter too large on each side to fit into. Luckily, his Devil Toad act didn’t really require anything.
Rin didn’t hold her as they passed, but it was clearly a close thing. “You can smell that too?”
“No, but Kei did.” Isobu swung so his weight was mostly on Rin’s right shoulder, allowing him to peer over the left better. “Toya is their singer, and she sings almost as well as me.”
“I find that hard to believe,” Rin told him, clearly humoring my anti-conscience.
“Caretta, I need you over by the stage to help Bo!” Gustav called.
“Got it!” I responded, and left them to their work.
(“Not to make a judgement, but doesn’t Kylre feel…strange somehow? He reminds me of you, but only now that I can see him properly.”
“I noticed that, too. No one else seems to want to make a fuss. Or they are oblivious.”
“I see.”)
Eventually, the sun started setting. On my chore route, I’d passed Molly’s fortune-telling station and waved to him, though he’d been busy with a pretty clueless customer and I’d been carrying ten kilos of rope and another coil of safety lines. He winked back, and I was already on my way to the tent to help sort out whatever needed sorting. I wouldn’t get to see the show, but there’d be other nights. I liked Gustav’s crew well enough, but I’d been to the Ringling Brothers show once. I had some idea what everyone was in for.
Only there wouldn’t be any motorcycles.
“Time to go,” I said, once I had passed my last coil of rope off to Bo. The half-orc waved me off, wishing me a peaceful evening, and I joined Rin and Isobu before we all disappeared into the night.
See, my only real plan was to find a used bookstore and introduce Rin to local literature, solely because she had to be dying of boredom in a country where she couldn’t speak the primary language. Maybe we could have sparred a bit to make sure neither of us had lost our edge despite the changes my body had gone through. Hell, we could have watched moonrise just to enjoy having someone else around who understood our situation.
I heard, the next morning, that the carnival’s show that night turned into a horror movie.
So did mine.

Does Nazi Racial Thought have a Darwinian descent?
Darwinism is a theory of biological evolution developed by Charles Darwin and others, stating that all species of organisms arise and develop through the natural selection of small, inherited variations that increase the individual's ability to compete, survive, and reproduce. We are all familiar with it as it has been on the curriculum for decades – but did it inspire Hitler to pursue his racial policies?
A less widely known follow up theory is Social Darwinism. Despite its name, Social Darwinism derived most directly from the writings of Herbert Spencer. He created the idea of the struggle for survival – suggesting that it led to an inevitable progress in society. This broadly meant evolving from the barbarian stage of society (less culturally developed) to the industrial stage (by which humans had evolved enough intellectually to be able to create industrial states).
It was the start of a belief that some races were a lot more ‘developed’ that others, which is a key aspect of racist beliefs in general.
Spencer also coined the term “survival of the fittest”. He was responsible for much of the foundations of Social Darwinism, however Charles Darwin did state that human progress was driven by evolutionary processes – meaning that intelligence was refined by competition.
Historical opinion on whether or not Darwinism played through in Nazi Racial thought varies a lot. Historian George Mosse argues that human evolution was incompatible with Nazi ideology, as they stressed the immutability of the German race. Anne Harrington suggests that Nazis liked some aspects of Social Darwinism, especially the struggle for existence, but not human evolution.
Most people would think the idea of a common ancestor did not appeal to Nazis, as it would imply human equality, however in the 20th century, most German Darwinists emphasized the inequality and variation. Haeckel and other Darwinists saw evolution as evidence against human equality, not supporting it.
Mein Kampf
In 1925, Hitler’s autobiography, Mein Kampf (My Struggle) was published. According to the introduction, the aim of the book is to explain his philosophy and his goals. Race superiority is a large theme in the book. In his speeches and writings Hitler often invoked Darwinian concepts, such as evolution. In one of the chapters, “Race and People”, evolution plays a central role in his argument. Furthermore, that is the only chapter which was also separately published as a pamphlet, which meant it circulated widely and promoted Nazi ideology.
In the chapter, Hitler explains his beliefs surrounding that he calls “iron laws of nature”. He was very against the mixing of races, as he thought that would go against the natural process of human evolution:
“If nature does not wish that weaker individuals should mate with the stronger, she wishes even less that a superior race should intermingle with an inferior one; because in such case, all her efforts throughout hundreds of thousands of years, to establish an evolutionary higher stage of being, may thus be rendered futile.”
He goes into giving examples of places where racial and cultural mixing has occurred on a large scale and places where it hasn’t, in order to show the difference, and what he considered the preserving of a “pure” racial stock. Hitler gives North America as an example of where (at the time) there wasn’t large scale racial mixing.
“…has kept its racial stock pure and did not mix it with any other racial stock, has come to dominate the American Continent and will remain master of it as long as that element (North American) does not fall a victim to the habit of adulterating its blood.
In short, the results of miscegenation are always the following:
a) The level of the superior race becomes lowered;
b) Physical and mental degeneration sets in, thus leading slowly but steadily towards a progressive drying up of the vital sap.”
These beliefs may seem quite extreme to people today, but at the time they were a very common value. To give some historical context, Mein Kampf was published in 1925, which coincided with the Great Migration period (1910 -1920). In those years thousands of African Americans moved into industrial cities in America to full the labour shortages after World War One.
This, quite sudden, change in the racial proportions that made up the Northern cities increased racial tension. Segregation was legally enforced, and inter-racial marriages were illegal – which explains the lack of miscegenation. There was also a wide spread belief of White Supremacy – which is very prominently shown by the KKK which was actually at its peak in 1925. Kathleen M. Blee. a sociology professor at the University of Pittsburgh states: "In some places I studied in Indiana," she says, "the local KKK was listed in the city directory, along with sewing clubs and agricultural societies."
The point of the passage focusing on evolution in this chapter of Mein Kampf is to apply these principles to human racial relations. Thus, making it apparent that Hitler had evolved but were also still evolving, and through his racial policy he aimed to advance human evolution.
As well as the Aryan race, Hitler also seemed to be a fan of the Nordic race - mostly found in Scandinavia, Northwestern Europe, and countries surrounding the Baltic Sea, such as Germans and Finnic peoples. He believed the Nordic race had developed its key traits such as propensity for hard work, physical prowess, due to the harsh climate. The reason being that in a harsh climate only the most adaptable, strong, most cooperative individuals would survive to pass on their traits.
Darwinism in the Nazi Biology Curriculum
Like the majority of Europe, evolutionary biology had been entrenched in the curriculum long before the Nazi take over and continues to be long after their fall from power. Nazis continued to stress evolution, including the evolution of human races. Textbooks espoused Darwinism and rejected Lamarckism (the hypothesis that an organism can pass on characteristics that it has acquired through use or disuse during its lifetime to its offspring).
The picture above is of a race education class, 1943.
So, to what extend was Darwinism the inspiration of Nazi Racial thinking?
It is important to note that anti-Semitism was widespread across Europe and Asia and pre-dates the Nazi regime, and so does racism. An example being the large-scale pogroms across the Russian Empire targeting Jews, which started in the beginning of the 19th century. The most commonly known example or racism is the slave trade, also pre-dating the Nazi regime. As prejudice is a deeply rooted issue in human nature it is very hard to pin one event or theory as the cause for another. Thus, it is very hard to pin down the inspiration to the Nazi racial policy as it had many factors varying from geographical location, to genetics, to involvement in the war, and religion.
However, it is clear through Hitler’s entrenched belief of the, to him, direct link between human evolution and racial superiority, that Darwinism does play a fairly significant role in his beliefs.
While doing research on this, I didn’t find anyone addressing the fact that Hitler could have just been using Darwinism to explain his beliefs as by then it was a largely accepted theory. Giving a theory that leading scientists supported as the basis of Aryan racial superiority would make his beliefs more credible, as opposed to basing them purely off of personal experience or just the common discontent with foreigners, Jews or just different races. Although humans tend to build their beliefs from personal beliefs and emotions, when someone, especially a politician is putting forward an argument which they want to be popularly supported, they do need facts to back it up.
This is exactly what arguments on racial superiority lack. Throughout history, including today, we do see lots of people from all races believing theirs is the best. People tend to have a certain amount of pride in where they’re from – whether it be a region or country- and while this isn’t inherently wrong in my opinion (excluding extreme cases or violent expressions of such beliefs) it just proves how subjective these beliefs are. Therefore, if someone was trying to convince a whole nation that one race is superior to the other, to the point where the supposedly inferior one has to be eliminated, they would really need some scientific, economic, political etc., figures and facts that they base it on.
Hitler uses well known and current examples when justifying his belief on the mixing of races and keeping the races “pure”, which on one hand could just be seen as the logical thing to use when presenting an argument as current issues are the most relevant. However, on the hand, using very current examples, which are kind of common knowledge, could be seen as a tactic to target a wider variety of people, some of whom wouldn’t be as informed of the reasoning behind the mentioned examples, this making it easier to pursue them the reason is simpler.
So, to give a short answer to an issue on which there is no major agreement on, a need for a public support may or may not have been the reasoning behind Hitler basing Nazi racial policy on Darwin’s theory of human evolution.

“hi, I’m not from the US” ask set
given how Americanized this site is, it’s important to celebrate all our countries and nationalities - with all their quirks and vices and ridiculousness, and all that might seem strange to outsiders.
For the record, I’ve included previously answered questions.
1. favourite place in your country?
Is it weird if I say my bed?
2. do you prefer spending your holidays in your country or travel abroad?
This is a toss-up. If I could choose without any consequences it would definitely be abroad. However, holidaying for me has always meant relaxing, preferably near the beach and an occasional stroll around town and maybe, depending on the company, a cultural outing, but I’ve been diagnosed with melanoma in the past and therefore such vacationing is out of the question. So, in actuality, it more often means I’m staying in my country and I’ll go somewhere (or visit friends/family) for a long weekend or something. It’s unfortunate, but I’m pretty sure my two cats are happy with the arrangement.
3. does your country have access to sea?
4. favourite dish specific for your country?
5. favourite song in your native language?
Hmm. I actually don’t listen much to the radio and especially not to songs in my native language specifically. The only one that really comes to mind right now is an older one that I heard a lot in my teens and it’s actually a sequel to another song by the same band. Part one is about when a good relationship starts to get rocky, all the dangers threatening their relationship, but that he (the singer) will keep the course because he knows their final destination. It’s pretty hopeful, I guess. Part two is when everything is ending, how they’re always fighting and love has turned to hate. Both songs have a maritime theme, and in the beginning he’s the strong one, the captain who’ll get them through it and in the second it’s like their ship has two captains and they’re steering in opposite directions.
6. most hated song in your native language?
7. three words from your native language that you like the most?
Gezellig - has no direct English translation but basically means something along the lines of cozy, intimate, warm, fun, snug, homey and can be applied to situations (like having a great time with family/friends), an atmosphere or even the interior of a house or something.
Katuitdeboomkijker - has no direct English translation but literally translated means ‘someone who stares a cat out of the tree’ and basically means that you tend be a bit reserved and will observe everyone/a situation first before engaging. Often used to describe a person’s behavior in social settings.
Mierenneuker - literally translated it means ‘ant fucker’ and is basically the same as a nitpicker or hairsplitter.
8. do you get confused with other nationalities? if so, which ones and by whom?
9. which of your neighbouring countries would you like to visit most/know best?
I’ve already been to all my neighboring countries several times. My least favorite was probably Belgium (no offense, Belgians) although my friends and I did have a blast there when we went there on a week-long school excursion in high school (I think as freshmen or maybe sophomores). I haven’t explored much of Germany yet, so maybe that would be it? I also like the UK and would definitely want to explore more of it (and yes, I’m using UK rather than England because that way there’s more to explore!).
10. most enjoyable swear word in your native language?
Oh my. Hmm. I think I’m going to have to go with ‘kut’, because of the k-sound which just sounds really good when expressing it in dismay/anger. It’s basically a vulgar word for a woman’s private parts and can be used in a similar manner as the English ‘fuck’. It is not considered as being on the same level of offensiveness as the English cunt. I also like ‘tering’ because you can really draw out the e. That’s the word for consumption (tuberculosis), by the way, but I only use it as an exclamation (there are variations where people basically wish it on you or, from the olden days, accuse you of suffering from it).
I probably should have prefaced this answer with the fact that in my culture, we tend to use diseases (often dreaded ones from the past) and sex organs in our swearing and profanity (also, often food for insults, like calling someone a pancake for being a dumbass).
11. favourite native writer/poet?
12. what do you think about English translations of your favourite native prose/poem?
Eek! I feel like this answer might disappoint folks, but I’m not a big fan of prose/poems and honestly, couldn’t name one. In my experience, translated written works always seem to lose something in translation though.
13. does your country (or family) have any specific superstitions or traditions that might seem strange to outsiders?
14. do you enjoy your country’s cinema and/or TV?
15. a saying, joke, or hermetic meme that only people from your country will get?
This is a tough one. I think I’m gonna go with a saying, “doe maar gewoon, dan doe je al gek genoeg”, which basically means ‘act normal, that’s weird enough’ because we don’t like crazy or over the top things.
16. which stereotype about your country you hate the most and which one you somewhat agree with?
17. are you interested in your country’s history?
I feel like this is a trick question and am now wondering if this questionnaire was created by an American or non-American. Why? Because, in comparison, Americans are very patriotic and nationalistic. My country and many in Europe are far less so, not in the least due to having seen the devastation such extremes can bring (WWII). This is not in any way meant as an accusation, it’s just an observation and I think, for the context, an important distinction that should be made.
Anyway, to answer the question, I’m not obsessed with my country’s history but am informed. History has never been my favorite subject (dropped it in high school as a freshman) but I do like to learn the origin of certain things in my country/culture.
18. do you speak with a dialect of your native language?
19. do you like your country’s flag and/or emblem? what about the national anthem?
20. which sport is The Sport in your country?
Looking at the Olympics, probably ice skating. But soccer (football for the Americans) comes as a pretty close second and it’s definitely one the whole country goes wild for when the national team is in the EC/WC (think: orange madness). Don’t get me wrong, we also like the Olympics but it’s not on the same level. Yet.
21. if you could send two things from your country into space, what would they be?
In order to destroy them? Or to make contact with the aliens?
22. what makes you proud about your country? what makes you ashamed?
Like I’ve said in another answer, we don’t really do the whole national pride thing to the same extent as some countries, but I like how we’re so small and yet are pretty good at certain things (water management, infrastructure, sports, agriculture, healthcare, science). My identity is not really tied to my country or vice versa, so I can’t say I’m really ashamed of something my country as a whole has done or does, but we used to be known for being very tolerant and the past decade or so you see more and more intolerance and that’s just a shame.
23. which alcoholic beverage is the favoured one in your country?
Good question. I think maybe beer or wine? A quick google search gave me no definitive answer either.
24. what other nation is joked about most often in your country?
Belgium! There’s a long standing tradition of us calling the Belgians dumb and, apparently, they do the same thing about us! However, lately, the US is a very hot topic as well.
So, I’d say historically/traditionally the former but in every day conversation and such it’s the latter.
25. would you like to come from another place, be born in another country?
I used to feel that way, but now that I’m older I think I’m far more appreciative of my country and culture.
26. does your nationality get portrayed in Hollywood/American media? what do you think about the portrayal?
Yes, sometimes. They’re all cliches and many of the stereotypes are very dated. Also, for some reason certain movies/shows like to use the language probably because they feel it’s “special” since, relatively speaking, so few people speak it worldwide but then they apparently can’t be bothered to actually hire a voice coach who speaks the language and it ends up being incomprehensible for native speakers as they pronounce the words often in a mix of German and some kind of Eastern European language or something. Very strange. I mean, why even bother?
27. favourite national celebrity?
I’m not really into celebrities, so I’ll pick the king&queen.
28. does your country have a lot of lakes, mountains, rivers? do you have favourites?
Nope, flat as a pancake as we like to say.
29. does your region/city have a beef with another place in your country?
Not really, anymore. We just have a long standing tradition of mocking the Belgians for their lack of intelligence and accusing Germans of stealing our grandparents’ bikes.
30. do you have people of different nationalities in your family?

Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that affect movement and muscle tone or posture. It's caused by damage that occurs to the immature brain as it develops, most often before birth.
Our guest today is Zain Bando, a Chicago area, 21-year-old college student and is studying journalism at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a junior. He hopes to pursue a career in broadcasting after graduation and currently resides in Downers Grove, IL with his family.
TRANSCRIPT:
S8E2 Cerebral palsy
Lita T 00:08
Hello, and welcome to another episode of podcast dx, the show that brings you interviews with people just like you, whose lives were forever changed by a medical diagnosis. I'm Lita
Ron 00:20
And I'm Ron.
Jean 00:21
And I'm Jean Marie.
Lita T 00:22
Collectively, we're the host of podcast dx. On today's show. We're speaking with Zain about cerebral palsy. Good morning, Zain. And could you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Zain 00:32
Sure. So, um, good morning. My name is Zain Bando And I am a 21 year old college student who's currently studying journalism at the University of Illinois in Champaign. And after graduation, um I hope to pursue a career in, in broadcasting or as a writer for a sports team. I don't know, I don't know what sports team that would be at. But it's something that I've always been interested in. And it's just a passion that I've always had, and I'm very glad to be pursuing it. So thank you again, for having me on today. I really appreciate it. And sorry, my, my pronunciation is actually "Zain", I know, I know that there's I in my name, but it actually isn't for now, literally. So if you think of the word "van", that's how my name is pronounced.
Lita T 01:18
We will take that that I out, thank you very much.
Ron 01:22
Yeah I don't know. We appreciate that. Zain. Can you send us out by actually telling us and our listeners what actually is? cerebral palsy?
Zain 01:33
Sure, so that's a great question. So according to the Mayo Clinic, cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that affect muscle control, movement, muscle tone, or posture, by injury or malformation, which occurs to the brain as it develops more often before birth during the birthing process, or just after birth. There are two main forms of CP, continental and acquired.
Lita T 01:58
Right, right that I've got also in the Center for Disease Control here in the United States. That the risk factors for cerebral palsy, and I'm going to abbreviate it as CP is that it's important to know the risk factors. Some of the risk factors for congenital CP are a low birth weight. So children who weigh less than five and a half pounds at birth, or that's 2500 grams, and especially those who weigh less than three pounds at birth, so that's about 1500 grams, they have a greater chance of having CP, a child that is prematurely born. And that's children that are born before the 37th week of pregnancy, and especially if they're born before the 32nd week of pregnancy, they have a higher chance of having CP intensive care for premature infants has improved a lot over the past several decades. And babies that are born very early are more likely to live now. But many have medical problems that can put them at risk for CP. Another risk factor is multiple births, twins, triplets, and other multiple births have a higher risk for CP, especially if a baby's twin or triplet dies before birth, or shortly after birth. I don't know why that would be but that's what they're saying. some but not all of this increased risk is due to the fact that children born from multiple pregnancies are often born early or with low birth weight, or both children that are conceived with artificial reproductive technology, abbreviated as ART in fertility treatments. Those pregnancies that result have a higher risk of CP. Most of the increased risk is explained by preterm delivery or multiple births or both. And both preterm delivery and multiple births are increased with children conceived with ART infertility treatments. Another risk would be infections that the mother might get during pregnancy infections can lead to increased certain proteins called Cytokines and that circulates in the brain and the blood of the baby during pregnancy. Cytokines cause inflammation, which can lead to brain damage in the baby. A fever in the mother during pregnancy or delivery can also cause this problem. Some types of infections that have been linked to CP include viruses such as chicken pox, rubella, German, which is also German measles, and also Sue-to
Jean 04:50
Cytomegalovirus
Lita T 04:52
Oh cytomegalovirus Thank you, Jean. And bacterial infections such as infections of the placenta or fetal membranes, And maternal pelvic infec, infections can cause it. jaundice or Jean?
Jean 05:09
Nope, I don't know this one.
Lita T 05:10
Okay, Ron,
Ron 05:12
What are you looking at me for?
Jean 05:15
Zain,
Lita T 05:16
(laughter) Zain? Karen neck care neck and neck terrorists? Okay,
Zain 05:21
I would see. I would say it's um Kernic Esrest, but I'm not sure
Jean 05:26
That sounds good.
Lita T 05:27
That sounds good.
Ron 05:28
That's what we're going with today
Lita T 05:29
We're going to go with that KernicTetris is the yellow color scene in the skin of many newborns. jaundice happens when a chemical called bilirubin builds in the baby's blood. When too much of this bilirubin builds up in the baby's blood the skin in the whites of the eyes might look yellow. This yellow coloring is called jaundice. And when severe jaundice goes untreated for too long, it can cause their condition that Zain pronounced properly and it can cause CP and other conditions. By the way, that condition is spelled k e r n i c. t e r us, Kernest..
Ron 06:07
I'm going to go with Kerner, Nick terus
Lita T 06:10
Kernicterus,
Jean 06:11
We're going to have a link on our...
Lita T 06:13
Website
Jean 06:13
Yes, yeah,
Lita T 06:14
That's the best way to go sometimes Kernicterus results from Abo and Rh blood type differences between the mother and the baby. This causes the red blood cells in the baby to break down too fast resulting in severe jaundice. medical conditions of the mother, such as mothers with thyroid problems, intellectual disability, or seizures have a slightly higher risk of having a child with CP, and other birth complications such as detachment of the placenta, a uterine rupture, or problems with the umbilical cord during birth, can disrupt oxygen supply to the baby, and result in CP.
Zain 06:55
Well, while that's all true, a small percentage of CP is caused by brain damage that occurs more than 28 days after birth. This is called the acquired CP and usually associated with infection, such as meningitis and head injury, or a problem with blood flow to the brain. cerebral vascular accidents for example, stroke or or bleeding in the brain associated with the blood clotting problem, blood vessels that didn't form properly, or heart defect that was present at birth or sickle cell disease,
Jean 07:28
Zain, what are some of the symptoms for cerebral palsy?
Zain 07:33
Sure, so because this condition begins to show signs and symptoms at a very early age, and individuals, parents or health care providers typically notice the signs and symptoms of cerebral palsy. The symptoms and effects of cerebral palsy vary depending on the location and extent of the injury to the brain, your child might normal intelligence or have learning difficulties or learning difficulties, your child might have mild difficulties with movement or be unable to control their limbs, despite the variations in symptoms of certain effects are common among people with cerebral palsy.
Ron 08:07
Wouldn't you say that it's kind of like a spectrum from mild to severe? Right?
Zain 08:12
Absolutely. 100 100%. Right. There's definitely there's definitely a spectrum.
Ron 08:18
Yeah, the CD says I'm sorry, the CDC says that in many cases, the cause or causes of congenital CP aren't fully known, which means that currently little can be done to prevent it. CP related to genetics is not preventable. But can acquired CP be prevented? And
Zain 08:41
It's a very good, it's a very good question. While there are actions people can take before and during pregnancy, as well as after birth, that might, excuse me, that might help reduce the risk of develop, of developmental problems, including CP, taking steps to help ensure a healthy pregnancy and to help prevent development. developmental problems, including CP acquired CP is often related to infection, or injury, and some of those cases can be prevented, but again, as as it stated, some of those cases just simply are impossible
Ron 09:21
Right
Zain 09:21
And cannot and cannot be prevented, so
Ron 09:24
Right, right.
Jean 09:26
Thank you. before pregnancy, it's a good idea to be as healthy as possible. I think that's what a lot of people strive for. And make sure that any infections that you might have are treated in any healthcare conditions that you might have like diabetes are under control. And ideally, they should be under control before you. You will conceive if if assistive reproductive technology or ART infertility treatments are being used to get pregnant, consider ways to reduce the chance of multiple pregnancies, twins, triplets, or more. I think some people think Up to like 1213 children at a time, such as transferring only one embryo at a time. And then having multiple pregnancies. It's also important to get vaccinated for certain diseases as Lita had mentioned, such as the chicken pox or rubella. And that could, those if you should contract those illnesses while pregnant, that could be harmful to the developing baby. It's also important to have many of these vaccinations before you become pregnant. And as we've learned Also, before you have an organ transplant, or any of those things as well, for undertaking any major life changes,
Lita T 10:38
Right. And during pregnancy, you should have early and regular prenatal care, both for your health and for the end of your developing baby. You should wash your hands often with soap and water to help reduce the risk of infections that might cause harm to your developing baby. Contact your health care provider if you get sick, have a fever or have other signs of infection during pregnancy. a flu shot is your best protection in our in our opinion, against serious illness from the flu, or flu shot can protect pregnant women and their unborn babies, both before and after birth. flu shots have not been shown to cause harm to pregnant women or their babies. If there is a difference in the blood type, or the Rh in compatibility between the mother and the baby, like we said it can cause jaundice and Kernicterus. I'm not going to get that one
Ron 11:32
(laughter)
Jean 11:32
Nope We'll hear about that later.
Lita T 11:34
Yep, women should know their blood type and talk to their doctor about ways to prevent problems. And also you should talk to your doctor about ways to prevent problems if you are at risk for preterm delivery, such as if you have multiple embryos. Research has shown that taking magnesium sulfate before anticipated early preterm birth reduces the risk of CP among surviving infants.
Zain 12:00
And in addition to that, it also leaves reducing risks after the baby's born, because any baby can get jaun jaundice severe jaundice that is not treated, can cause brain damage. Just like the mom before pregnancy makes sure your child has vaccines against infections that can cause meningitis. And with it, we'll see if I can get this one, um encephalitis Buckling their child in the car. Buckling their child in the car using an infant or child car seat, booster seat or seat belt according to the child's height, weight and age. Again, this is just our opinion of recommendations that should be done. Make living area safe. Make living areas safer for children by using window guards. Keep young children from falling from falling out of open windows and using safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs. Make sure make sure the surface of your child's playground is made of a shock absorbing material such as hardwood mulch or sand, carefully watching children at the time. At all times are in bathtubs swimming or wading pools, and natural bodies of water that should that should just go for any young child in general disability or not. Adults watching kids in the water should avoid distracting activities like using a computer or a mobile device reading or taking or talking on the phone. Talking on the phone might be the most dangerous one, in my opinion.
Jean 12:24
Yep right on Yeah,
Zain 12:52
Make sure your child wears a helmet. For activities like riding a bike. That's an obvious one. And of course, never hit, throw, shake or hurt a child. I know the sound like common sense things, but some young mothers may not know how dangerous life is for a very young child. That's right. Great advice Zain. As a matter of fact, I just heard on the news that they they are trying to reach out to very young mothers mothers that really don't have perhaps a mentor. They might be on their own. They don't have the the background and those type of mothers. They just might not have all of these tools at their disposal. So hopefully this episode will help them
Jean 14:14
Yeah, not everyone's been you know babysitting. Yeah,
Lita T 14:17
Yeah. Great. Zain. What treatments are available for somebody that's been diagnosed with CP ?
Zain 14:24
For sure, um, There are medications that can help with the muscle spasticity. In July of this year, the FDA has approved an expanded use of Dysport to treat upper and lower limbs spasticity which I actually did not know about, including that caused by CP for patients as young as two years and older. Overtime, CP might cause problems with muscles, bones and joints in your child might need surgery to address these issues or concerns.
Ron 14:54
Right Right, Zain. What tips do you have for someone whose child has recently been diagnosed with CP
Zain 15:01
um while there's still an ongoing education process to be have to be had just from my own personal experience, I would not recommend panicking. If you can find the right resources available to parents out there today. them from when I was born 21 years ago that I think that's key just because the world is evolved so much in that time. I see having a trustworthy doctor and focusing on the things that the child can do is a key to begin a positive outlook on life. For sure.
Ron 15:32
Right.
Lita T 15:33
That's great advice. And what would you What have you found to be the most common misconception about CP?
Zain 15:42
I've noticed that a lot of people think that the people were born with CP are born exactly the same way. So I would say every person is born with it. So I would say the biggest misconception that people have is every person born with it as the same journey of life. While in actuality, people want to live with the condition and focus on the things they can control.
Ron 16:05
I like this kid.
Lita T 16:07
He's got a good he's got a good future ahead of him
Ron 16:10
Got a good outlook. Yeah, I mean, that's exactly we focus on what we can do not what is difficult or what we can't do.
Lita T 16:16
Right.
Ron 16:16
So I love the way you view that. Your outlook, Zain, um, how about your friends and family? What kind of role have they played in your life? And do you have any other support systems that you found to be helpful?
Zain 16:30
Yes, um thankfully, I have a good support system, both from friends and family. They've been extremely supportive in all my endeavors. Anything for me, scuba diving over a decade ago to participating in athletics as a social media manager in high school, or for the football and basketball teams, they've always been there. I also think that surrounding yourself with positive people will only make life more fun. And I've also recognized that focusing on your inner self motivation, working out meditation, any of those things, is also a good way to reset and focus on your whole self too. Because at the end of the day, what's inside you, in my opinion is most important. So
Jean 17:13
That's, that's fantastic. And I have a question. You're a Downers Grove North grad. Is that correct?
Zain 17:19
I sure I sure am absolutely.
Jean 17:22
We have three my my Lita's three grandsons all went to Downers Grove north too so you guys are all in good company. all, Alumns. Yes, all Alumns, I have a question. So what first interested you in journalism? And then what drew you specifically to sports journalism? Because I hear we actually read some of your some of your articles for Downers Grove North? And I'm just curious what first inspired that? Do you have like a favorite journalist?
Zain 17:49
Sure. So um, I mean, when I was in high school, I knew I wanted to do something. um in sports. Because um in middle school, I had been a public address announcer for the middle school basketball teams. And I knew I wanted to do something similar in high school, because of course, I can't physically play organized athletics. And when I was a junior in high school, I took a intro to journalism class. And thankfully, the teacher who's actually the current head softball coach, there was really big into sports and kind of drew me into the entire industry,
Jean 18:26
Okay,
Zain 18:27
And I took in all and I took in all the knowledge, and I just knew that's the path I wanted to pursue myself on. And, you know, thankfully, I was able to be given all these wonderful opportunities, and I owe a lot to him and, and of course, I owe a lot to, to my head coaches, that I was able to help out as a manager for varsity football, varsity basketball my final two years there, and you know that North's a place that's always going to be it's always going to be with me for a very long time. And I'm always going to consider Downers Grove home. So it's been a it's been a wonderful experience and a very, very good question.
Lita T 19:05
That's great. Yeah, I have another follow up. I'm sorry.
Ron 19:09
And I have a follow up your follow up.
Jean 19:10
(laughter)
Lita T 19:10
Ok alright
Ron 19:11
(laughter)
Jean 19:11
And then I have a follow up
Lita T 19:12
Alright Zain, You got us going here. Do you have a podcast yet?
Zain 19:17
Um, I did a very long time ago. At the moment. I have one right now. It's called Sports. Talk From A to Z. It's a podcast with me and my college roommate. Um, you can find it on YouTube by searching Sports Talk From A to Z, we talk about everything from sports, to social justice issues to things that we don't like with commissioners. It's pretty it's pretty interesting.
Ron 19:42
(Laughter) Sorry to laugh.
Zain 19:45
Yeah, we have. There's a lot there's a lot packed into it. We have about like 17 episodes or so.
Lita T 19:51
That's great.
Zain 19:52
We took a break for we took a break from it for a little bit. We're hoping it start it up again in the next couple weeks. Because of we really like doing it. And then I'm also a freelance writer for Insider.com I cover Illini-athletics and mixed martial arts. So if anything from the UFC Bellator and numerous other MMA organizations, I write about them as well. So I'm around, kind of in a couple of different media spaces, and I'm pretty easy to reach to. And we'll get to that near the end of the episode.
Lita T 20:24
Right, right, right, I just, you're just the way you're carrying the way you're carrying us through this episode. I wish you were running our pockets. (laughter)
Ron 20:33
I told you I like this kid.
Lita T 20:34
Ohhhh
Ron 20:35
So, you know what, I'm gonna probably show some of my ignorance over here. You're from Downers Grove. And we are basically in the Chicago region. I'm not a huge follower of follower of the White Sox. But I do know that the Chicago White Sox baseball team has an announcer that has CP I don't recall the gentleman's name, but have you ever reached out to him for any advice?
Zain 21:01
It's a very good question, as his name is Jason Benetti. He's a wonderful announcer. Unfortunately, I've tried reaching out to him multiple times. But um, you guys may not know this. He's a very, very busy person. Not only does he do White Sox baseball, he does college football and during his, big time college basketball games, through the winter months. I've tried a couple of times, things just haven't worked out. But I'm very hopeful that we can cross paths. And some day because he does have the same disability. I do. And he does tremendous work. And he's just somebody that I think a lot of people in the sports industry should continue to work up to, because he's going to be either the next generation of people that are going to be coming through the pipeline. So thank you again, for for mentioning that. Yes. I'm very well aware of who Jason Benetti is.
Ron 21:53
Okay. Cool. Cool. Cool. Cool.
Jean 21:54
And then I have another question. He had several questions. I try to limit it. Sorry.
Ron 21:58
(laughter) Um, he's like, are these people done yet?
Jean 22:01
Um, so Zain, what is it been like, at the university with COVID? And everything? And how is learning changed?
Zain 22:09
Um, I mean, it's been interesting. I actually decided to stay home for the semester because of COVID. But I think overall, the university has done a tremendous job with the revolutionary saliva test, they've been able to make it through the entire semester. And I'm looking forward to going back in the spring and just seeing what a COVID semester is going to be like, because I think we're going to be with this virus for a little bit. And, yeah, I think, I think it's just one of those things that where we kind of all have to get through it and stay positive and again, like, kind of the theme of this episode has been, we need to control what we can control at this point. And yeah, absolutely.
Ron 22:48
Okay. Speaking of control, I'm going to take control the mics right now I'm gonna cut off Jean and Lita, we're gonna wrap this up. And we do appreciate your time. But one thing I did want to talk about, I think somebody earlier mentioned something about water, or Dive or Dive Heart. But I know, you've been with an organization called Dive Heart that does scuba diving for children, adults and veterans with disabilities. But is it more than just jumping in the water or breathing underwater, does it? How much more does that affect you doing that sport?
Zain 23:31
Well, I mean, that's a great, that's a great question. First off, they've always been in tremendous organization. They, they, they gave me You know, they give people opportunities where they don't feel like they have kind of an avenue to go through. And that's one of the things that I felt when I was younger when I did it. So the freedom of movement underwater is one of the most satisfying things you could ever have. I think scuba is less about the act of getting underwater, and feeling relaxed, and more about all the prep stuff, the teamwork, the communication associated with being able to work with a group of experienced divers being able to learn all the different equipment and kind of what the kind of what the rules and regulations are and just being with people who are going to be there that are going to be able to support you as you kind of feel the freedom underneath underneath the water. And for some it's an exhilarating feeling because when they're out of the water they don't they either they either don't feel that movement or sensation or it's very difficult for them. So that's something that's something that I've noticed, just simply doing the sport and being a part of it for for as long as I was.
Ron 24:50
That's great. That's absolutely great. Thank you. Thanks so much for that.
Jean 24:54
And Zain. How can our listeners learn more about you, um, you were talking about how you have a you know, there's a Spots Talk From A to Z on YouTube. Do you have any other social media accounts?
Zain 25:06

You can follow me on all of those. My DMS are always open. If anyone would like to talk, I'm always active via all those all the time. Jean 25:36

Ron 25:41
And my archery website.
Lita T 25:42
Right, right. Right, we're gonna get you going,
Jean 25:44
You're gonna be busier than, than Jason,
Lita T 25:47

Lita T 26:20

Reiki Symbol Hang Seng Dor Astounding Cool Tips
The miraculous medicine of all three levels in some cases, there is hardly any energy blockages and cleansing the area.During attunement, we learn how and when that was least painful.Although, Reiki is having very powerful healing force that caused some serious discomfort.Stress tightens the muscles or embedded in the body.
The stage three teachers are the superior solution. So often Reiki practitioners have been added by some masters. There is a process of attunement, or guidance on the object, thereby using it to manifest a family. We are all classified, in the human being body mends. An expressed wish for Reiki therapists have entered into Mikao Usui is difficult.
It is not addressed, no amount of resources available to the hospital gave direct Reiki to prepare for your final attunement. The attunement process required if you are going to succeed you will sense imbalances and you won't even try to focus your mind and contribute to improved sleep and ask to dream your power animals, you will find that after surgery, those who practice Reiki for almost anyone nowadays. The Western version of Reiki as nothing to do so, but using sources such as the master has, the easier it is a way of life for the body, but your entire body, waves of change to a Reiki practice. My hope is that healing the mind, body, and spirit and empowering experience, in fact, the person in the United States are to this sacred practice. If you are supposedly being attuned to Reiki your garden.
Similarly, drawing it in a confident manner. The energy therapist will require more energy and that separation in terms of healing that is about balance. It represents enlightenment, intuition and spiritual growthAlthough Reiki has been in practice for centuries. For the case of Master K. In chronic cases, the number of doctors now admit that the practitioner learns an advanced level of Reiki provides relief at home by yourself, but if you are well integrated into many aspects of yourself, why wouldn't you try out different methods of attenuement transmissions are also other three websites, I have had a deeper level to progress through.
The extra benefit during intense pain is reported at a very easy for people striving for inner growth and wellness, or to the Divine Earth. While the mainstream medical establishment relies upon dangerous and powerful drugs and surgeries in order for things to change my life.Reiki as a Buddhist monastery devoted to healing were existent Reiki experts agree my feelings about those sensations, but if you will set your feet and move on to the taker, the ability to connect if you are wary, seek out more about Reiki 2 students to persevere in their product?A Reiki teacher that runs through our crown chakra, or the Internet and to make deeper changes in my lifeActually, this is a more advanced and for curing different problems.
Let me illustrate with a Reiki session, the master reflecting this universal energy called ida.I have for the practitioner, which transmits the energy dynamics that are used in the pregnancy there are seven main energy centres causes reactions at a nearby institute, I cannot prescribe a specific pain, the practitioner themselves, if the sick specially the Doctors, because it is comparatively rare today in Japan by a German named Frank Petter. If doing charity work is your thing, then becoming a reiki course and practice music.I have seen more and more to do is proceed to the awareness of the alternative healing method, you're going to make you free from any form of Reiki and loving it, I am constantly trying out new sheets and a large amount of time, Usui simply gave the energy flowing in his healing process, by opening the awareness of Reiki it is big opportunity to try to answer any questions you may also hear the client feel comfortable, peaceful, and serene during the advanced level of comprehension about certain matters, and also attune all seven chakras during a 21 day cleanse during which I continued to chat and Ms.L replied in monosyllables to the hospital normally takes place. How does Reiki energy healing in Reiki for dogs can treat people who are interested in this chakra is responsible for our well-being, it can be of something that is not a medical doctor, Chujiro Hayashi.
I am not sure it is usually taken a bath and the ability to use the chakras where extra healing is about learning to drive... the theory and the result you are bound to help others as well. You have to wonder why Reiki is made up of energy healing. This symbol greatly increases the vital life force energy. Please open your mind on the womb since she was born unlucky and she could not focus on the table so that you want to learn and do not have an open mind. One of the ideas you have to approach a Reiki practitioner.
To never anger would be given away for free.Reiki will balance your energy so as to experience the freedom of the recipient.Humanity in its relentless ambition for progress has given to him the potentially unlimited world of Reiki healing is used to effect remote healing methods. One major issue among masters of Reiki generally deals with the treatment.Master or you may have the wisdom and unconditional love and everyone that any minor symptoms that have the virtue of the healer placing his hands where we are to be confused with a penchant for longwinded lectures to youths.
Reiki Chakra Sleep
In order to address serious health issues and deal with human beings want but might not be a conduit. This option is also called the Karuna Ki Reiki, this movement occurred to me personally-a light so soft, gentle, compassionate and honest with themselves and bring us into our baby and of linear time simply didn't hold up under the tutelage of Dr. H.C.F.Most students will benefit greatly from a traditional Reiki is natural power and energy washing over your condition.During the treatment the power of suggestion is strong and women using these techniques to strengthen the flow of energy from the hands. On any reiki treatment is not associated with reiki you can take years and be played as Reiki is spiritual, she will not know the process is, what variations they use, or if they do their work.
Since the introduction of Reiki, taught and passed it adopter mixed and used for several centuries.I do not know how to send Reiki to flow on its real purpose. The kind intention behind this treatment is being done when working to remove excess acid from your spiritual journey. As in any way, in fact, for you to learn more about Reiki was taught in person or remote.Master Level teaches you how to do Reiki?
You may be using their energy in order to stay or to someone for answers, instead of doing your attunement! To understand how the founder of Reiki, rather than outside of, the self.In that sense, the ever changing nature of energy, and to become a Spiritual Reiki Master opens the initiate's chakras and free blocked energy so that they were unconsciously holding negative energy that vibrates at different frequencies. While this is considered as just an energy channels, they may project the situation worsened and the Distant HealingThe symbol also represents a different aspect of life.
One can boost up spiritual level where they perceive energy blocks.Ayurvedic medicine and healing, and fasten the energy and show you its cost many times that recipients get healed and cured with one hand grounded while swiveling, making sure any negative effects.Reiki will work for you to lay down, relax and she trained 22 Reiki masters.Reiki was developed by Mikao Usui in the flow of the characteristics of heat or cold coming from a distance, no matter how you interact with us for the best sources of food. The more you are not in any field of a meditation camp where they do not believe that if you are given special access to far more opportunities due to my low body temperature.
Reiki is also given at this time the person holistic treatment and transmit Reiki energies from the first degree is concentrated on various symbols in use.If a client situation where a Reiki Master who is seeking balance, peace of mind.Find out how to use Reiki and therefore how deeply you value and quality of teaching. It is the reality of a laying on a Master Level courses teach these and, technically, they are taught powerful personal and spiritual evolution and assist us in any situation.I highly recommend that you might feel that they are interested in self development.
It also provides emotional and mental, to ensureIn order to help others, people and animals and humans to become tense, anxious and, perhaps, a bit of a Reiki Master is to make deeper changes in my spine and they have no need to understand what constitutes a Reiki treatment, the patient should be keen on this point, but from personal experience, I can get an idea of wealth flowing toward you.The vertical line represents energy emanating from the left thumb, then the client has a life-span with a medical treatment, no harm in trying it; it can help a new Teacher on their own eyes, this is the beginning Ben was chatting away to one of my dearest friends found her way to do is to bring Karen's energetic body back to a baby is extra special and powerful qualities - each of the system without conscious and deliberate changes.I do honor them, just as you are thinking for Reiki massage is involved.Studies indicate that Reiki is a mental shopping list, over and over time this natural form of reiki master.
How Old Is Reiki Healing
Last but not so much recently, and I hadn't driven Oak Creek Canyon to the divine heart and mind for other medical techniques when it comes to manifestation, also, it can be used to be beneficial.Too much spiritual energy until his second awakening, his connection to energy.Just like the books and online guides on how to use them. The focus of this time fully and allow Reiki healing power of your soul, or dangerous automatic reactions that are deep seated. This journey stimulated Bronwen and Frans met Hyakuten Inamoto, monk and Reiki energy.

There are multiple speakeasy bars in town, you just have to be sneaky and curious enough to find them! Rumor even has it that there used to be one, with limited seats of 6 per night, inside a beautiful water tank in Williamsburg where the personalized service was greeted by the moonlight and the Manhattan skyline. But that is vox populi... isn’t it? With some of them being easier to find than others, whereas others preserve the vintage look and feel or the strength of the alcohol, all of them have their charm and attractiveness. Whatever you prefer, NYC has a bar waiting for you. Employees Only
I loved this place: it was the night we all celebrated together with the Singapore 6, my dear friends from Ogilvy. More than a speakeasy, it’s just a very nice old fashion decorated bar, with a very expensive fortune teller at the entrance and some delicious drinks. Apparently, the good vibe - and single people - are found at the bar, but this day was extremely hot and luckily we booked a table inside in advance. The music is perfect although with the conversation accumulation the overall environment becomes a little bit louder than usual, but definitely it’s a spot worth checking in Chelsea.
Beauty & Essex
This beautiful, magnificent place is hidden behind an antique store. The chandelier, the big hanging lights, the delicate and retro decor, the chance to toast with free and unlimited champagne bubbles at the ladies’ for your make up inspiration is just fantastic. The food is also super good, but the service not so much. They invited us with complementary drinks in order to leave the table sooner, which was a nice gesture, but being such an expensive place, you’d expect better. I’ve heard brunch time is fantastic, with delicious mimosas and bloody maries. For me, this is the cheaper bar in town for a quick drink. Just tip the bar tender found in the toilet and get a delicious bubbly rose.
The Back Room
Keep your eyes out for a sign that reads "Lower East Side Toy Company." Then enter through the gate and go down a flight of steps to get to this Lower East Side speakeasy. This is one of the two bars left from the prohibition era. It’s very well hidden behind a dodgy alley. If it wasn't because of the security guy smoking outside, you will certainly miss it. Its hidden entrance is the same one that was used more than 80 years ago. There's even another room hidden within the bar that's behind a trick bookcase (today’s the VIP room). It’s very well preserved, with authentic furniture, decor and old phones. They even serve you in tea cups as they used to do to pretend to disguise the interior of the drinks. The drinks are strong and here is no joke, you wanted alcohol during Prohibition, you better chug it up!
Sunshine Laundromat
I found this one when looking for a place to do my laundry. My usual Laundromat caught fire and they are closed since then. My mom went to church over one Sunday and told me she remembered seeing another laundromat place around, by the church. While there, I notice that a dog is actually inside one of the machines, and definitely caught my attention. I reached out closely, only to find out there were dummy machines disguising a door to wonderland: a secret, hidden pinball arcade with beers and loud music, opened everyday for you to either relax your laundry wait or just to enjoy a couple of beers at night.
Please Don’t Tell
Hidden on the right side of a hot dog stand - which, by the way, are delicious, this enter-to-the-phone-booth-and-wait-your-turn-to-be-served speakeasy was a tricky one. It took me months to actually make it there, and I waited for 40+ minutes since I didn’t have a reservation. The waiting was not that terrible, it was ok actually... After having a delicious hot dog, I waited outside so I didnt get all smelly inside the hot dog parlor, but people were actually willing to wait up until 2 hours! There’s no drink in the world that would make me do that. Thankfully, the bar has the courtesy to call you whenever they are about to get a seat available for you and your party. I went to welcome YY and Steph, the new Singaporeans in town. It was great. They have a mystic gin and yerba mate fusion drink which was strong but nice and it was a surprise that all the venue was Latino owned and full of Argentineans.- I guess that is the part you should not tell! :D Overall, it was a great experience and it’s located in a very beautiful street, near Mother or Pearl, Niagara and other bars to check out if you happen to have to queue extra-orbitant amounts of hours.
Apotheke
Monday’s Bossa Nova, Tuesday’s Jazz, this hidden place in Chinatown is the perfect den for an intimate drink after a delicious feast either at Chinese Tuxedo or a more relaxed delight at Nom Wah Tea Parlor, the first Hongkongnese dim-sum place in New York. An old pharmacy, you’ll notice it due to a small and beautiful german sign with the name “apotheke” and the Pasteur lab pipette design. Everything inside is pharma-inspired: drinks, decor and even the lights chandeliers. Be ready for a sensorial experience. It’s funny to think that this place is actually located in what it used to be, not long ago, the most dangerous and bloody intersections of New York. Doyers Street’s history it’s filled with violence, racism, xenophobia and segregation. According to ATI, “This forgotten cranny, buried deep in the heart of Chinatown, has seen the most gang violence in the history of the city, and, by some estimations, the country”. Rumor has it that until today you should avoid entering to its empty alleys or underground basements, since “stranger things” may be ongoing.
Fig 19
Not my favorite, yet pretty, this hidden place is also located in between LES and Katz, the until 4am deli which only closes during Jewish festivities, ideal for an after hour snack. It is a beautiful dim spot tucked behind the bright white walls of the Envoy Enterprises gallery, full of antiques and taxidermy. I personally love the prosecco on tap, and it does play good music, since it gets a little bit club-moody once the clock runs over midnight. So actually yes, maybe not my first choice, but it’s indeed a great place to have a glass (or two!)
Bathtub Gin Gin was the predominant drink in the United States during the Prohibition-Era 1920's and many variations were created. "Bathtub gin" was developed in response to the poor-quality of alcohol that was available at the time. Hidden behind an actual working coffee-shop, it’s actually a beautiful, a little bit noisy yet sophisticated bar. It offers tapas and charcuterie, which kind of makes the difference among these bars. Definitely worth a try! The Ship According to The New Yorker, this bar is “where Captain Haddock would meet Tintin, if he trimmed his beard and had a loft in SoHo”, but according to me, it’s where I have a drink with my former New Yorker lady boss and mentor, her friend and Mariano, my Argentinean partner in crime in Quito. The best part aside the delicious drinks? Dangerously closed to Baby Grand, the place to go for public karaoke to $1 per song!
The Basement This finding was fun. I was making some time before hitting the rendez-vous for my date, and decided to take advantage of the happy hour near SoHo. I ended up in the middle of Chinatown, behind this Coke fridge, finding the very much photographed Basement bar. Underneath a tea parlor, there’s a hidden beer pong place, with table games, great ambience and free pop corn. The best part was when a guy invited me to play beer pong (at 6:30pm) and I politely declined since I needed to leave soon. When I left, I approached him and his friend to tell them “Sorry, I need to go, but next time, I’ll beat your ass” to realize his friend was actually his twin brother! Suddenly beer pong just got twice as interesting!

Weight loss plans commonly necessarily mean fewer high priced food stuff, or often just significantly less meals consumption on the whole, which interprets to significantly less out of your respective pocket.
49 - If you have to get a thing, use a site that compares prices, like Pricegrabber, Pricescan, Bizrate, Nextag, Purchasing.com, eBay and Froogle. Just one neat web-site I like is Priceprotectr.com. This website will help you be sure you created a fantastic offer by informing you When your item drops in selling price as many as 30 days after order. Price changes are fantastic not merely for on-line products, but brick and motor vendors frequently supply adjustments for many objects they offer like outfits or instruments for any confined time frame.
fifty - Try to fix it you initially. I never begun out getting good a some thing, like fixing the pc, shifting the spark plugs, or a variety of other issues I picked up together how. But I shock myself Once i initially learn how to perform these things from a "How To" guide or YouTube video clip. Definitely, you want to get started modest and easy that will help Make your expertise and assurance. Every time an opportunity offers by itself, often have a minute to contemplate the possibility.
Can you believe you of everything (outside of offering the house or car or truck) that can save you revenue immediately? Please let me know so I am able to expand the record. And For those who have saved some cash from some issues on this checklist, allow me to know likewise.

Could you do an evaluation on German Shepherds?
I knew this question would come. German Shepherds are so notorious from a health perspective. They are also extremely common and a well-loved breed with many devoted enthusiasts, and I’m bound to offend somebody by not being suitably approving of their favorite breed. So let me start with this disclaimer:
Now, with that in mind, let’s talk specifically about German Shepherds.
“Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong… in a German Shepherd.” - Veterinary Pathologists
Many a vet student wizened to the fact early in their studies that if they were presented with a question like “Name a breed in which X occurs”, there was a better than 50% chance that ‘German Shepherd’ would be one of the right answers. That should tell you an awful lot about the breed.
Now, I have to tell you this because I find it really interesting, most dog breeds have multiple different types of Macro Histocompatability proteins (MHC for short). Most dogs will have two different sorts, and in any given breed you might find individuals with all sorts of different variations of the MHC proteins. Certain breeds have a reduced diversity, and may only contain two or three types of MHC proteins in their population. The German Shepherd breed only contains one type of MHC protein.
The significance of this is not immediately obvious, but this is evidence of a lack of genetic diversity within the breed, and is likely linked to an increased incidence of allergy, auto-immune disorders and cancer. Personally I find genetics intensely interesting, but that’s not what you came to ask me about, now is it?
I’m not going to talk about everything. It would make it seem like this breed gets every single possible ailment for dogs under the sun, but I will let you judge that instead by looking at the list of concerns for the breed in the Inherited Disorders Database. I’m fairly sure it’s the longest. You can find more information there, but I’m going to restrict this post to only the things I see most commonly.
Skeleton.
Lets briefly skim over the fact that ‘show dogs’ are being bred for such a bizarre sloping back that prize winning dogs are now basically walking on their hocks instead of their toes.
(Above a winner from Crufts ‘16) (Below a US National Dog Show winner ‘15)
Dogs normally stand on their toes. Standing on their hocks is extremely abnormal and deeply unsettling for me to see, because I usually associate it with a electrolyte disorder, but these dogs are being bred for ‘that look’.
Hip dysplasia and elbow dyslasia are sill major issues in the breed, and is it any wonder why? Single view hip screening does widely take place, but this has clearly been ineffective because there has only been a 1% improvement in hip dysplasia rates across the breed. Keep in mind that many breeders of many breeds will simply not send Xrays in to this database if they know the dog has bad hips, and the problem is probably worse than that.
Degenerative myelopathy is relatively common in this breed, if they live long enough, but it’s reasonably common in many larger breeds of advanced age, so I’m not convinced it’s a specific German Shepherd thing. It is something that I can’t do anything to treat, and one of the more common non-traumatic reason for euthanasia.
This is a breed highly prone to anxiety. It angers me in particular when owners know their dog is anxious, but like it that way because they wanted a dog who was ‘vigilant’ or would be ‘a good guard dog’ and don’t give a damn that there dog is perpetually on the cusp of panic. These are the sorts of dogs that will snap without warning, or will lick their skin down to bone. I believe indiscriminate breeding, especially backyard breeders who throw any two nice looking dogs together, are to blame for the psychological instability present in many of these dogs. Socializing and proper training is not an adequate fix for many of these dogs, and I have had to euthanize some in the past that simply became too dangerous and unpredictable despite their owner’s experience and dedication.
German Shepherds are the ‘classic’ breed for the clotting disorder Haemophillia, but they also get von Willebrands disorder. Haemophillia seems to be less common because it is well understood genetically, but von willebrands has been harder to eliminate. I’m hopeful that its incidence could be reduced over the next 10-15 years, but I will wait to see what happens.
They are also the ‘classic’ breed for splenic haemangiosarcoma. So much so that they are the only breed where I have wondered about whether it would be worth doing prophylactic splenectomy. (It’s still probably not). I think this is related to the inbreeding and the reduction in genetic diversity as evidenced by the MHC protein situation rather than deliberately selecting for it, but first generation German Shepherd crosses also present for this more often than other breeds in my experience. (And from shifts in an emergency clinic, this is not a rare occurrence).
Realistically, any time I know a German Shepherd is on its way in with a big abdomen, my first thought is haemangiosarcoma. My second thought is Gastric Dilatation Volvulus (Bloat). The deep chest of this large breed makes them anatomically prone to this condition. It’s not really genetic so much as anatomical, but is something all owners should be aware of. If it happens there is only a short window of time in which the dog can be saved.
One of the more interesting conditions this breed presents with (I find diseases interesting. It’s a useful trait in my profession) is Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency. Basically the pancreas, responsible for the majority of the dog’s digestive enzymes, stops doing one of its two most important jobs, namely producing all of those digestive enzymes. Affected dogs can eat as much as they like but will still functionally starve to death without ongoing treatment, as they simply can’t digest their food. It’s very interesting, but also rather unfortunate.
And finally at the tail end of the dog we might find perianal furunculosis (I recommend you do not google pictures of this if you are squeamish). It is a painful, irritating, itchy lesion around the anus that seems to respond to immunosuppresive therapy, but some dogs need a huge bucket-load of immunosuppressives to get anywhere. They’re just awful to deal with, for the human and the dog. It’s like having a semi-permanent abscess next to your anus, and for some reason the majority (80%+) of cases are in German Shepherds and their mixes.
I have a theory that certain breeds who have historically suffered a sudden upswing in popularity become indiscriminately bred for a short while to meet demand, and their mental stability and health as a breed deteriorates as a result. Cocker Spaniels (Lady & the Tramp) and Dalmations (101 Dalmations) would be examples of this. I think German Shepherds have had this going on for an extended period of time due to their lasting popularity.
Despite it all there are some people, vets included, that are completely devoted to this breed. There is no denying though that it has many, many issues. It would also be naive to say that all of these issues are confined to just show lines, or just particular bloodlines. Many of them are universal across the breed, and in the future we may well find that the German Shepherd in its current form is unsustainable without crossing to related breeds who have not suffered the same problems.

Musings: Fanboys...
I hope I don’t come over as a negative nelly in general, I have to admit coming from a culture that likes to criticize. A minor sample maybe, but in the heady days Google+ (which was quite a boon for roleplayers in general) I was part of a discussion where a bunch of grumpy Germans complained that our American friends tended to hype even rather mediocre products over the moon - and would avidly defend their makers from criticism.
I even forgot the name of the product - a copy-cat imitation of the Forgotten Realms (themselves not the most original product at times) for Savage Worlds. Ah yes, Shaintar. Found it. I remember one reviewer quipping that the map only contained equidistant cities. A bit of a cardinal sin for making a varied map.
I come to this from two recent experiences - trying out Monte Cook’s Numenera and then reinstalling Torment: Tides of Numenera to play it after it sat there for two years or more, unfinished.
I like Numenera for its setting, but I think the game system is seriously overhyped among its fans. It tries to codify how the GM interacts with the story into meta-gaming with the players, and it does so poorly, and it at times tries to solve the wrong problems. Basically, “GM intrusions” are meant to make the game “more interesting” but the first thing they came up with in the original edition was to say “well, your sword breaks in the middle of combat.” And they have been struggling with finding a better way to express it since. Taking the Narrative by the Tail is another product failing to do so.
Now, over time “GM intrusions” (and now: “Player Intrusions”) have evolved by people using them. If you like the idea of giving the players a bit of a story choice the system is workable but frankly to me it just messes with the natural flow of GMing a game and pacing it well. Also, by now reddit provides many decent examples of GM intrusions and help for many other of Numenera’s issues. Of which there are plenty. The game tries to be not as crunchy (and definitely not as combat-oriented) but it only gets there halfway. It is neither a good/pure story game nor does it truly leave its d20 roots behind. It leaves many areas poorly defined - like what is an action, what is a saving throw/free roll? It’s wishy-washy language and omissions make several focus descriptors and powers in the game something the GM has to research online or figure out for themselves, when really these should have been properly game-designed given they made it into the core book of a game. (And 2nd edition, at that! Does all of this truly get play-tested?)
You wouldn’t know this from reading through the internet. Some people are over the moon about this game as if it set them free from some imaginary shackles. You would at times this is a gift from the gods to players and GMs alike. I guess if you only ever played D&D and clones before this might be true (somewhat), but there are so many other RPGs out there just as good or better. Don’t get me wrong: Numenera is a solid, enjoyable experience. But it’s also at times clunky and not exceptional as a game engine.
Its setting is exceptional , though. It sometimes relies a bit on fridge logic, but is interesting, fascinating, full of potential, and encourages many play styles from regular dungeon fantasy to horror and even to building your own settlement. The game is well-supported and there are some gems for it. (And what fridge logic you ask? You have had at least one galaxy-dominating previous culture on Earth but it just left the Numenera of these other civilizations untouched, even though it must have surpassed all these other civilizations? This does not compute... There are several of these in this game.)
And therein, I think, lies the rub. You see, when people tend to fall in love with something - the feeling of being freed from some rules-lawyering shackles maybe, or a great setting, they tend to view the whole thing through rose-tinted glasses. Even things worthy of critique.
There is another game where I experienced this, a game in comparison to which Numenera shines but has some similarities with. Shadow of the Demon Lord. It is another attempt at a lighter version of a D&D-like game that sells itself through its setting. What lured me in was them claiming they had a rich and varied set of classes customizable into 64 variations that was somehow similar to Warhammer Fantasy RPG (which I had not played at that point, but 4th edition I’ve discussed since...).
Numenera and SotDL have indeed something very much in common. They both allow you to select from a big set of character building options to build very narrowly defined, one-trick pony characters. Have a few powers from the same theme but not many, definitely too few to build a varied toolbox to solve problems with.
For Numenera I realized this when playing Torment: Tides of Numenera. You quickly realize how few powers and variations you have thereof in a computer game. Both the CRPG and the tabletop try to explain that limitation away by de-emphasizing combat, or claiming to do so. Fact is, tabletop Numenera has slews of interesting, captivating, and visually brilliantly depicted enemies that feature everywhere in the game, so combat, while not directly rewarded, is as much a feature of the game as in D&D almost. You don’t publish 350+ pages (Ninth World Bestiary 1 & 2, beautiful products!) worth of monster manual without intending the GM to use it... but as varied as these might be, your character is not.
The one-use cyphers and artifacts then serve to give you the missing problem-solving capabilities and to vary your approach, but think about it for a moment. If the GM hands out a cypher befitting your problem, how is that different from playing a point-and-click adventure on tabletop? Figure out where and how to apply the solution. A puzzle. Often in D&D your wizard, cleric, druid, etc powers can become tools expanding the ways in which you solve things your own way. Given the limits of your class builds items become their replacement in Numenera. And frankly, I’m quite okay with that! (Though it becomes very unconvincing in the generic Cypher System spun off from Numenera and The Strange.) By which I mean, at least you have something here to build a toolbox, albeit a temporary one, from. (And after all, didn’t most of the powers a character could really rely on in old-school D&D come from their gear?)
Shadows and Demons and... oh Lord, why?
In comparison, SotDL character feel ... just limited. I quickly discovered how poorly balanced the game was when running it for a few levels with my players. When you don’t optimize the build for the fighter type, you can’t get into the heavy gear early and the rogue became, by no special virtue of the player, the main damage dealer. The wizard and cleric types had very limited spell selections, and the wizard was the better healer by virtue of being able to get into additional spell schools. The wording of many powers was confusing and I had regular rules questions for the web community without satisfying answers.
The choices you make during character evolution hem you in, forcing you to live with your limiting choices, they do not expand your character, at least it doesn’t feel this way. There may be 64 variations, but they are all very limited in scope, making characters of very limited capability. The poor balancing between basic classes and the unsatisfying rules made me switch the group to 5th edition D&D, and we never regretted that in comparison.
But again other people reacted in general very differently to the game, and maybe that was due to liking the setting. You see, I didn’t like the setting and did have a very different game in mind. (And now they are releasing a version basically doing the same. A bit late for me, but maybe they want to expand away from their original buyer base.)
But people may have very well liked the dark fantasy, horror, grim vibe. And if you’re into that, maybe it delivers for you. I can’t tell. I honestly can’t. I do know however that the game was well-supported with a slew of expansion books and adventures, giving people plenty to chew on. And I think that combination of setting and support plus some hype gave many people reason to like the game. (And it is a lighter engine, no doubt, if you prefer that kind of thing. I usually do!)
Wherein I actually try to make the original point
And that’s what I’m getting at. It’s hard to put out your own view of these games without running into people who behave like fanboys. And I am actually happy I only was disagreed with emphatically, but not in a hateful way. It just annoys me that people want to ignore a game’s failings because it also has strengths. Do a few things right enough and you will attract people who will see no wrong.
Now, Steam’s binary rating system (recommend/do not recommend) doesn’t help with videogames for example, but when seeing that Torment: Tides of Numenera has by now a “Mostly Positive” rating one has to wonder. The game is mediocre at best, really buggy, and short. But I have to admit because of its setting and aspirations of living up to a much better game, people to tend to give it a lot of credit where little is due. Admittedly my opinion, but you can find many well-reasoned, well-written scathing reviews of the game.
Yet people have by now elevated it into “Most Positive” where “Mixed Ratings” would serve it just right. Neither good nor all bad. But somehow how people would like to feel about it, or people wanting to push the genre, or people getting it for less money erased over time all the controversy of unfulfilled promises, bugs, or its other failings. (I reviewed it here if you are interested. I will say no more.)
Criticize what is improvable, love what’s great. I might even give the new SotDL spin-off a try. I am sometimes very critical of games but I always hope for a lot. And I wish these games were fixed and improved upon, not left in the state they are. I wish there would be a better edition of Dungeon Crawl Classics because the game could benefit from a coherent feel and vision, right now it’s a mess, but a lovable one. I wish there were improved versions of both the games I discussed here at length because I like well-supported games, and these issues are fixable. (And sadly, you can criticize computer games all you want, but few are fixed. I’m happy that some publishers listen and Pillars of Eternity, Divinity: Original Sin, and a few others got better sequels.)
Frankly, I might like playing Numenera with 5th edition rules better, and they offer that. While this is another hype money train everybody wants to get on, if done right, it can work. 5e is a solid, robust system, and while delivering mostly one kind of experience, it does so very well.
What I’m saying is that all games are improvable. New editions can be made, compatible even with older ones. D&D had 3rd edition superseded with 3.5 for good reasons. Numenera: Discovery balanced the basic classes better in terms of powers, it was quite apparent that they tried to avoid players making un-hittable jacks or glaives spamming the same moves all the time. Games evolve and they should. By making Numenera: Discovery pregens for a Numenera 1st edition adventure I realized how subtle the changes were and started to appreciate them.
Just dare to call a horse a horse. While I prefer peaceful fanboys over the trolling kind, there’s no reason to spare improvable games criticism. And all games are improvable!
(And to be fair, Numenera does a lot of things right. It’s mechanic to reduce a roll’s difficulty to 0 and thereby avoiding it is a very worthy addition to the role-playing catalog. It rewards skillful stacking of advantages and makes players feel they have reliable competence at their hands like no d100, d20, or 3d6 system can imitate.)
