humility
[ for @microficmay day 14. drarry | rating: t | word count: 254 | part 12 | part 1 here | read the full story here âĄâË ]
â â â
After a morning of broom maintenance and more testing on his (as-yet-in-progress) training wheels charm, Harry finds Draco in the tertiary lab. Itâs small and unadorned and the one McGonagall set aside for Draco to complete his Owl-post potions mastery program.
Draco sits at his scattered desk, flipping through envelopes and scribbling into his notebook. The work table is a stark contrast, organized carefully, neat as a pin. A small pewter cauldron bubbles over the low simmer of a charmed hearth stone.
âWolfsbane?â Harry murmurs, finally catching Dracoâs attention.
His gaze snaps up, a smile flicking over his face before falling away.
âThe mod Iâve been working on. Iâm trying to imbue some of the elements of a Pepper-Up, so the characteristic crash isnât quite so abrupt, but the bicorn horn and the occamy egg powder are counteractiveâ I mean, obviously. I thought I could use dried occamy as a substitute, but it doesnât perform as efficiently alongside the necessary dosage of Sopophorous beans.â
He taps his fingers across the desktop, thoughtful.
âIâm wondering if I could supplement the dried occamy with porcupine quills, but there have been limited studies on their interactions, and nothing thatâs gone to the clinical stages, and I donât really have time to start from scratch, at least not right now, but I thoughtâ what?â Draco falters.
âNothing,â Harry says, lopsided grin unchecked.
Draco frowns.
âYouâre remarkable,â Harry huffs, approaching his desk.
The tips of Dracoâs ears go pink.
âDonât be ridiculous,â he says.
âDonât be modest,â Harry answers.

with hermitcraft season 7 slowly coming to an end, i figured it was time to consolidate all of the Informative Posts about hermitcraft that i and some of the other members of hermitblr have made over the last several months.
if you enjoy:
minecraft youtube content, but want to see more traditional vanilla minecraft gameplay like building and redstone
fun, lighthearted interactions between genuine friends including Elaborate pranks, collaborating on massive projects, light roleplay, proximity voice chat mod
weekly 20 - 40 minute long youtube videos and consistent upload schedules
chill grind stream weekends where CCs interact with chat and each other
an entire youtube channel dedicated to weekly 20-minute recap videos on what all the hermits have been up to so you donât have to piece it together from the posts on your dash/timeline
insanely talented people who have been doing mcyt for nearly, if not more than, a decade and essentially built minecraft youtube from the ground up
give hermitcraft a try! Â
you will find all of the information you will Ever Need below the cut. itâs Very Long so view it on desktop.
and if you ever have any more questions, just shoot me an ask :)
what is hermitcraft?
the Basics: what, who, where, how
more details on the Basics
bonus:Â the historical impact many hermitcraft members have had on mcyt
where do i even start watching?
start with grian.
good mix of Incredible builds and fun server shenanigans. instigator of many server-wide events. interacts with many other hermits. generally entertaining to watch. but zero redstone knowledge.
check out hermitcraft recap.
great way to be introduced to other hermits and learn what everyoneâs up to. if you find what a hermitâs been working on interesting, go watch their video and maybe give them a like and subscribe.
official hermitcraft website with links to every memberâs channel
more information on every hermitâs attributes and general vibes
do hermits every stream?
short answer: yes, most do! but these streams are mostly chill grinding or buildling streams. and you donât have to watch the streams to be caught up on content. check the official hermitcraft website for each memberâs twitch links.
long answer that covers most of the hermits
what do they do on hermitcraft?
letâs start with some examples of their incredible builds.
hermit cribs:Â some of the megabases in s7
goodtimeswithscarâs s7 magical village with shaders
stressmonsterâs bakery and renâs star wars world
Capitalism
they have a shopping district where hermits can set up shops and sell items and resources that other hermits can buy with diamonds. hereâs season 7 shopping district set on a mooshroom island:
some of the most advanced redstone youâve ever seen
if youâre more into the technical side of minecraft, you can be rest assured that hermitcraft has some of the Biggest Brains in redstone.
tangotek: a fucking madlad. Â Singled-handedly created the minigame Decked Out. Â im Begging you to watch his tutorial video on how to play. Â currently finishing up his Among Us but in minecraft minigame. all of this was built Entirely in survival vanilla minecraft. Â get this man to 1M subscribers.
mumbo jumbo: the man himself. built a 128 x 128 block industrial district in both season 6 and 7 packed to the Brim with mechanical farms. half the brain behind the masterpiece of engineering that was Sahara in season 6. currently working on Pacific, the sequel to Sahara, in season 7.
iskall85: the other half of the brain behind Sahara and working on Pacific with mumbo in season 7. also has an industrial district like mumboâs in season 7.
xisuma: built an automatic potion brewer in the second half of season 7. this thing churns out potions by the Shulker Box. can also turn a shulker box full of potions into splash potions and extend duration all with a press of a button.
impulseSV: incredible example of form + function. farms are scattered throughout his base. he has a farm for nearly every farmable resource in vanilla minecraft.
etho: the pioneer of some of the most widely used redstone mechanisms to date. content isnât super redstone-focused. mostly does compact modules that serve a specific function.
zedaph: makes strange contraptions. heâs basically if grian knew how to redstone. impeccable vibes and fairly underrated.
bdoubleo100: he occassionally does this segment called âredstone with bdubsâ and itâs the only redstone i understand so thatâs why heâs here.
what about roleplay? and lore? Â
yeah they have Plenty of that too. Â
it generally comes in the form of self-contained storylines that involve most members on the server and take place over the course of several weeks in multiple videos. itâs fairly light roleplay, if thatâs not your thing. but the plotlines also have a Massive Potential to be angsty and whatnot if you really look into it, which a lot of people also do.
hereâs a more in-depth look into the Major Plotlines over the last 2 seasons (season 6 and 7). huge spoiler warning though.
um also thereâs this post that highlights how truly cursed hermitcraft can be if you dig deep enough hahaha.
so do the hermits only make hermitcraft content?
nope!! many of them are involved in other mcyt content as well and are friends with other prominent members of the mcyt community!! Â
MCC
mcc9 blue bats video essay: the time the hermit team won the whole damn competition. a wonderfully made video worth Every second of your time. especially if you donât typically watch the hermit teams.
falsesymmetry: mcc10 ace and mccâs First Back-to-Back Winner
lord grian dreamslayer: that time grian Popped Off, killing dream, tubbo, and fundy in mcc9 survival games

if youâve made it this far you are Contractually Obligated* to watch one (1) hermitcraft episode and reblog this post.
*for legal reason, this is a joke. youâre not contractually obligated but consider this: Please. i spent way too much time on this.
shoutout to everyone whoâs posts iâve linked and anyone who has helped answer a question about hermitcraft. this all started because i was frustrated that people were writing the hermits off as cannon fodder in mcc and im genuinely so glad that many of you have given hermitcraft a shot.

winter was never kind to us, the only things that seemed to warm us all were the bread and pastries niki made, or the fire weâd have ever night. otherwise, the town was silent, not a peep from anyone simply trying to survive.Â
we were close, or at least some of us are. every now and then youâd here whispered talking, most now guarded and isolated from the first attack. tubbo and tommy were the two that spoke the most to each other, tommy commonly being seen entering and exiting tubboâs florist shop, except not always with flowers.
heâd leave with weapons now, newly crafted and made swords or arrows, shields sometimes even. it wasnât new but it was still shocking that this is what the town had come to. what used to be a lively, social town now filled with the cold, bitterness of a half victory.Â
wilbur hadnât been seen for a couple of weeks, the only signs he was still in there were the fact patrols were still being sent out. tommy, techno, and purpled all wandering the island, weapons drawn and looking out for that one boat.
âmasked raidersâ is what they called them, the members rather than the ship. the title was earned when their raid leader had become recognizable for their white eye cover/bandana and mocking smile.
no, the ship itself was called âethereal furyâ. led by the infamous captain puffy. legends say itâs hundreds of years old, passed on to their family like an heirloom, yet no one knew who would lead it next.Â
you stared out over the waters, one leg over the cliff side and the other tucked up, elbow leaning against it and palm in hand. your bow sat beside you, the bundle of arrows scattered around messily. organization was never your strong suit, but aim was. tubbo had crafted you personalized throwing knives, your initials craved into the handle.
your hand clasped around one of the knives, running your thumb delicately over your initials. glancing up at the sky, you took note of the time, pressing a hand against the ground and standing. purpled would be home soon, and you needed to check him over for wounds. he was your brother, as reckless as he was, he never learned to take care of himself.
with a sigh you walked around, picking up the discarded arrows, sliding your bow over your back. the string pressed against your front, though it became an invisible, phantom of a feeling when you turned around, hearing noise from the waters.
around another island in the distance pulled a ship, not too far away from your home island. quickly you pulled a shrinkable scope from your pocket, an intention fundy had given you to test, looking around the boat for a symbol.
and there it was, the ram horns on the front of the ship. quickly a gasp left you, from your post you ran for the watchtower. the cliff was a watchpoint and practice area, one you commonly went to.
you rushed up the mossy watchtower stairs, almost stumbling. finally, you reached the bell, grabbing the string inside and frantically ringing the bell.
itâs noise rung out, hurting your ears, yet you continued to hit it and let the sharp sound fill the island. immediately you heard the upsurge from the side, hearing the draw gate start to close and defense barriers begin to set up. techno and tommy mustâve been closing in when you hit the bell, what ironically and unfortunately perfect timing.
the cold wind stung at your skin and face as you raced back down the stairs and to the cliffside. you kneeled, pulling your bow back out and drawing an arrow from your quill. your sight was aimed down at the ship, keeping a steady aim and stare on the offensive, and enemy raiders.Â
the ship began to slow, and you could see the cannon windows begin to open. steadying your grip on the arrow you aimed slightly up, breathing in before releasing the arrow, exhaling while you shut.
the arrow zoomed through the air, piercing directly into the opening of the cannon. the window immediately shut on that opening, and you took out another arrow, quickly changing positions to be further in the shrubbery. loading another arrow you aimed at the pirate ship again, watching them begin to dock. the moment you saw a sign of movement you fired the arrow, repeating your breathing process. it hit against the board that let them down, bouncing off and into the waters, though you had been inches away from hitting someone's foot.
you glanced up slightly from where you had been aiming, the white sticking out against the rest of the outfit. pain shot through your lungs at the aggressive and sharp inhale you took. the leader of the masked raiderâs was staring directly up at the cliffside, though not at you, but rather at the watchtower.
quickly you rolled into the bushes, back against a tree while peering out at them. you saw two of the raiders jump out, one throwing a fireball at the wooden defenses and the other throwing two potions down. their swords gleamed, even from how far back you were. suddenly, you heard a familiar warping sound.Â
drawing your attention over, you watched a black and red hooded figure land, glancing over the town. they stood beside the watchtower, only about twenty feet away from you. slowly you leaned a hand down, grabbing a pebble. keeping it held firmly in your hands you reared your hand back, throwing it at the shrubbery on the other side of the watchtower.Â
that got their attention, and you got a good glimpse of their face. a half demon, black horns prominently protruding from their forehead and white eyes. you bit your tongue to prevent any noise, pulling a throwing knife out of its sheath. it was silent for a moment before the half demon began to walk over to investigate, sword drawn.Â
you had to block out the noises of the battle below in order to focus, inhaling softly and slowly. tunnel vision took its effect, and everything around you became noiseless, void while you zoned in on this half demonâs back. the knife flew from your hand, embedding yourself into their shoulder.
âagh!â the half demon shouted, flinching forward and dropping their sword before spinning around, growling. clearly they were angry, ripping the throwing knife from their shoulder and looking at it. their blood was white like their eyes, and while they seemed focused on the throwing knife you drew the dagger you had strapped to your thigh.
from where you were you could hear the half demonâs breathing, before their gaze flickered to the shrubbery you were in. your eyes met, and before you realized what you were doing, you had sprung out of the bushes, lunging at the half demon.Â
their grip on the knife changed, clasping tightly around your throwing knife. while you swung to the side in an attempt to hit them, they swiped at you. the knife clipped your shoulder, but you had managed to slash across their leg.Â
you rolled away, on your good shoulder, the adrenaline numbing the sting from the wound. the half demon took a step back to look at you, seemingly unfazed from the wound. they slowly took steps towards you, while you stood there, shifting your feet into a fighting stance.Â
suddenly they rushed at you, stabbing the knife down at you. your knife raised, meeting the knife in the middle. while you both struggled to push the other knife away, you rose a foot, kicking the half demon in the stomach. they flinched, gasping while being kicked back.Â
your throwing knife dropped, and while you quickly moved, ducking to pick it up, the half demon threw their own knife at you. it landed in your shoulder, which brought a gasp of pain from you.
glancing over, you saw the half demon running at you again, sword drawn, having picked it up when they were kicked away. you stared, rage now burning in your stomach. when they took several swipes at you, you managed to duck or back away from the strikes. when the barrage of hits ended you swung forward, slamming the handle of your knife into their head. the half demon got knocked down, and before they could get back up again, you slammed into their stomach. you hit the handle against their head once, twice, and finally three times before they were down for the count.Â
standing up you inhaled shakily, reaching a hand up and ripping out the knife. you gasped again, stifling a cry of pain by biting your lip. tears burned in your eyes before you rolled the half demon over, slowly taking all their weapons. you hesitated before grabbing the half demon by the back of the hood, dragging them over to the watchtower. you propped them up against a wall inside, leaving their practically emptied bag there.Â
new sword in hand, you walked out, the pain slowly returning from your dying adrenaline. returning to the cliffside over town, you stared down at the battle, panting softly. the battle reigned on, techno fighting the masked raiderâs leader, tommy fighting the one that started the fire, and purpled fighting the one that splashed potions. from what you could see the battle was in the townâs favor, philza even shooting arrows down from above the townâs biggest building, the townhouse, where wilbur, fundy, and philza all lived.
with a sigh you readied yourself to go down the cliff, shaking out your arms, not without a spike of pain in your left one. slowly, you used your heels to ground you to the earth, sliding your way down without hurting yourself too badly. scrapes now littered your hands when you hit the ground, quickly running into the town.
the battle was louder now, metal clashing against metal and the sounds of the crackling fire. you ducked beside the bakery, peering inside for niki.Â
when you looked inside you saw her behind the counter, the traveler jack inside with her. they seemed to be talking, jack gesturing to the battle outside while niki shook her head. she saw you, pausing before waving. jack turned to look at you, scowling, which seemed to be his natural expression. you waved back before looking back at the battle, huffing.Â
the fire was spreading uncomfortably close to the townhouse, though philza seemed fine from above. it was fundy you were worried about, less than about purpled but still worried. the fox hybrid had been taught to fight, but hadnât completed his training, and was even a few years older than purpled. heâd been babied for so long by wilbur that he hadnât gotten the chance to train.
glancing around at the battle, you made sure all of them were distracted before running, sprinting across the open field. the clinking of the swords grew louder as you ran past them. unfortunately, the moment you got close to the townhouse, you heard the loud sound of cannon fire. the noise pierced the air, a ringing noise now sitting in your ears as you watched the cannon ball hit directly into the townhouse.
âno!â you screamed, voice cracking. the impact knocked you off your feet and threw the sword away from you, though you scrambled back up, you were forced to watch the townhouse crumble and fall. philza managed to swoop down with his wings. âphil, fundyâs still in there!â you shouted at the advisor, who paused with wide eyes.
âget him! i need to help techno!â he shouted back before dashing off, not even giving you a chance to rebuke. you exhaled heavily before running into the burning remains of the townhouse, roughly scrambling through while coughing from the smoke.Â
lifting the broken wood, âfundy! where are you!â you shouted, coughing afterwards. faintly you heard him call back, a weak âhelp!â from within the rubble.
dashing over, you quickly began to remove the wood, ignoring the sting from the fire. it burnt your skin, licking at it to create new wounds while you simply continued to move. finally you found the fox hybrid, grabbing his hand and pulling him out. his fur was burnt slightly, tips singed. you put a hand on his head, forcing him to duck with you. âcâmon! this place is gonna collapse!â taking hold of his hand you rushed fundy out of the building, with him stumbling behind you.
when you both managed to get out, only a few moments later did the building groan, the rest finally collapsing. your hands shot to your knees, crouching while you coughed aggressively. fundy pat at your back, covering his own cough with an arm. âthank you.â his voice was hoarse, yet almost broken sounding. you glanced up at him, nodding before walking a little bit away. picking up the half demonâs sword, you handed it to fundy. âprotect yourself.â even your voice was hoarse, strained from the smoke and coughing.Â
he nodded at you before both of you turned to the battle still raging on. ringing set in your ears again, the pain coming back like a tsunami. you winced, crying out in pain before collapsing to your knees. burn wounds littered across your hands and upper arm, the stab wound to your shoulder not doing any better from the ash that now rests atop it.Â
your breathing had become labored, shaky on top of that. fundy rummaged through a he had, taking out a healing potion. he kept a hand on your back, âtilt your head back.â you glanced over at him before doing as told. the fox hybrid pushed the bottle to your mouth, pouring half of it for you to drink. you gulped it down like it was water and you were going through a drought. leaning your head back forward, he drank the rest of the potion. âthank you.â you muttered, able to feel the energy returning to your body, watching the burn scars fade slightly and feel the stab wound stop bleeding and scab over.Â
he hummed, removing his hand quickly after that while discarding the bottle. ânow letâs get back to this battle right?â fundy grinned, one of his fox earâs flicking. you smiled back up at him, standing up and taking out your dagger. âwe got some raiders to beat the shit out of.â
together, you rushed towards the battle, though fundy diverged from you, running to philza. you kept running straight, sprinting to where purpled was fighting, though his opponentâs back was to you.Â
just as you were above to slash at him you heard the call out, âgeorge! behind you!â it came from the one tommy was fighting.Â
the one now known as âgeorgeâ, spun around, swinging his sword. you ducked back, sword swiping over your stomach and head. you spun, pressing your hands off the ground and kicking him into the stomach, knocking him back towards purpled. while you landed your brother slashed george in the side, rearing a hand back and punching him square in the face while he was in shock.
his glasses crumbled to the floor, now broken, blood dripping down after it. he gasped, and while you moved around george to purpledâs side you could see why. georgeâs nose had been broken from purpledâs punch, and your brother still wasnât letting up. purpled landed another punch into his gut, shoving george back again. the enemy raider let out a small fry of pain before punching back at purpled, hitting him in the shoulder.
it was slow motion when you watched the raiderâs leader appear behind george, and as george ducked, the leaderâs sword swung towards purpled. you dived forward, knocking purpled out of the way. the sword hit empty air while you stood back up, glaring at the masked raider. their head turned to stare at you before one of their hands rested on georgeâs shoulder. george glanced at the leader before running off into the battle.
it was slow motion when you watched the raiderâs leader appear behind george, and as george ducked, the leaderâs sword swung towards purpled. you dived forward, knocking purpled out of the way. the sword hit empty air while you stood back up, glaring at the masked raider. their head turned to stare at you before one of their hands rested on georgeâs shoulder. george glanced at the leader before running off into the battle.
you stared at the masked one, or the bandana, shifting the grip on your dagger. right now you really wished you hadnât given fundy that sword. it was silence between you two before he bolted forward, swinging at you. you backed up, ducking and dodging his rapid swinging.Â
purpled shouted, âcatch!â you glanced over only for a second, dropping the dragged and catching the sword, spinning on your foot and clashing your swords together. the clink rang out, the renowned, mocking smile forming on the leaderâs expression.
you stared flatly, glaring before smiling. the masked leader paused when you smiled, quickly spinning around and hitting purpledâs dagger away. with his back turned, you slashed down it, cutting through his shirt and drawing blood.
the masked leader paused before aggressively swinging at him, pivoting and slashing the blade at you. you bounced his blade off, taking steps back while he took steps forward, making aggressive slashes at you.Â
the tip of his sword hit you every once in a while, making shallow cuts first to your arm and then one to your chest. finally something intervened, though it definitely wasnât what you hoped for.
âstop the fighting or heâs fucking dead!â the fire started called, sword to someoneâs neck. you and the masked raider both paused, looking over. fundy was beaten up, bleeding from his lip and nose, slashes made down his arms and a couple on his legs.Â
you gasped, âfundy-â your voice started, but before you could move the masked raiderâs sword was put in front of you like a wall. slowly you looked over at them, staring with wide eyes. purpled came to your side, weapon discarded and glaring up at the masked raider. âback up.â he commanded, but his demand fell upon deaf ears.Â
the masked raider continued to stare at you while one of his companions shouted, âdrop your weapons and give up! one fucking arrow or knife comes at me and heâs gone!â the sword moved closer to fundyâs neck, who managed to hold his head back slightly, his eyes wide, mouth tightly closed, and arms drawn in.Â
âlet him go-â your voice was quiet at first, before your fist nestled around the grass below you, though it was practically dead. âlet him go!â you shouted, voice breaking halfway through, tears finding their way to your eyes. âheâs just a teenager how the fuck can you do this! youâre threatening to kill us for what? greed! fucking satisfaction you sick fucks!â you continued to scream, even when the masked raider moved his sword closer to your neck.
tears spilled over your eyes, âif youâre gonna do it then fucking do it! but leave him alone! fuck off! weâre a small island! a fucking family that you made distrust each other from the first attack! whatâre you gonna do? stab me?â you reached up, grabbing his sword and bringing it to your neck. your grip was tight enough to cut your hand, blood dripping down the blade. âdo it then you fucking sick prick.â from behind the bandana you could feel them staring at you, as if actually contemplating it.
their sword dropped as they walked forward, crouching down and grabbing you by the collar of the shirt. they smiled, âdrop the fox!â they called, holding an amused tone of voice. âweâre taking this one.â as they spoke they hoisted you up, lifting you slightly off the ground. you squirmed, and as much as you hated it you had to accept they were stronger than you.
âno you arenât!â purpled shouted, swinging the sword you had discarded towards their arm. another sword intervened, but not by who either of you expected.
wilbur scowled at purpled, pushing your brother away. âstand down purpled.â he ordered. purpled opened his mouth to speak, but wilbur didnât give him the chance. âyou heard me.â he glared before looking over at the masked raider.
âleave.â was all he said, turning his back on the masked raider, walking across the burnt town-square and over to where fundy had been dropped.Â
the masked raider tossed you over his shoulder, where you wiggled, hitting at their back while cussing bitterly. the raider who had started the fire was handed a pouch of gold while wilbur took fundy, leading the fox hybrid away from the raider.
the raider whistled, âand thank you-â the masked raider shouted after a moment, âsapnap! câmon we donât have time for this!â they called. âsapnapâ groaned, rolling his eyes before going along. âand see you all another time!â he mock bowed while the masked raider walked up the board.
you hit at their back with closed fists, wiggling. âlet me go!â your voice echoed, screaming, though no one listened. no one in the town could look at you, the only ones who did make eye contact were purpled and techno, one who looked regretful and the other looked guilty. both were wounded, techno more so than purpled, before they were gone from your sight.
the board was hauled onto the ship when sapnap got back on, george and the half-demon getting their wounds tended to as you were set down. the masked raider set you down against a pole while the boat got moving. feeling the boat lurch forward, you moved with it, wincing when your head hit the back of the pole.
your eyes closed, biting your tongue before opening your eyes. when you opened them you saw the captain staring at you, ram horns decorated with gold jewelry. you yelped, trying to flinch back even further from the captain.Â
alas, that did nothing as she only grew closer. you shut your eyes tight, tucking your chin and grabbing onto your own wrist tightly. the feeling of a hand on your chin brought back all your fear, and it only worsened when you were forced to look up, opening your eyes out of shock. she stared down at you, studying your expression and how you reacted. you were forced to stare back, and your fear mixed with anger burned into your eyes and stomach, boiling like a geyser.Â
âgood job dream, now we have leverage.â she hummed, smiling. âwelcome to ethereal fury.â captain puffy stared down at you before letting go, simply taking a few steps back. her sword shifted as she moved, and with a snap of her fingers you were being picked up again, this time by strangers. âdreamâ seemed to be the masked raider, who stood beside the captain.
the new people holding you were up some not out on the battlefield, you assumed they were behind the canons or simple helpers. one was a half endermen and the other looked more dead inside, and bored, than sapnap did behind dream.
ânow i find it awfully impressive you managed to take down bad,â that sentence got the half endermen to tighten their grip on you, âbut iâm not all that happy you did it to begin with.â puffy turned to look at you, unsheathing one of her daggers. ânow you can either tell us everything about yourself and the island,â the tip of the dagger pressed against your lips, applying pressure on your lower one, âor you can decide to not speak at all.â
your jaw fell loose, and the light pressure applied to your mouth made it fall open slightly. the cold of the blade shot through your head, the metallic taste was a bitter reminder of what was happening. she removed the knife after a moment, to give you the opportunity to speak.Â
you looked up at her slowly, glaring. âyour men tried to kill one of my friends,â your voice was low, words slow, âso frankly, you can suck my fucking dick.â a smile drew onto your face, âbecause at least mine is bigger than half your menâs.âÂ
puffy stared back at you, and while the fear and loss of confidence dwelled in your stomach, you were determined to keep staring back.Â
finally, she laughed loudly as well. your expression and body slacked at the noise, eyes widening. âthatâs a good one kid, a good one.â puffy leaned slightly down to look at you, smiling. âyouâre amusing, so full of spite it seems.â she stood back up, sheathing the knife. âi like this one.âÂ
dream rose a brow before scoffing, him and sapnap walking over to george and âbadâ. ârelease them.â puffy ordered, which got everyoneâs attention.
slowly you were let go, you stretching by rolling your arms, though you winced right after. your arm was still sore from where bad had stabbed you. hesitantly you glanced around, unsure of what to do now that you were let go, though puffy brought your attention back to her. âalright kid, now youâre not one of us so donât get the wrong idea, but youâll definitely have to stay in the cell for a couple of days.â those words brought your scowl back.
âwell if your so-called dream hadnât insisted on taking me you wouldnât have to worry about me.â you grumbled. puffy laughed again, though it sounded more mocking this time.
puffy grabbed you by the wounded shoulder, tugging you over. her nails dug into your wound, which made you wince out of pain, biting your lip and whimpering slightly. she let up on her grip, though she still dragged you down into the bottom of the boat, through a staircase. down there was one guy cracking jokes and the other laughing. the one making jokes was in blue, a scar down one of his eyes, and the other was in a colorful outfit, goggles on top of his head and a book in hand.
you stared at them for a moment, and eventually they both looked over at you, pausing in their conversation. puffy continued to tug you forward, and as you passed them they both returned to conversation, though more hushed this time.
when you looked forward again you saw puffy pulling you towards a cell, which was quickly opened with one of her keys. you inhaled sharply when she pushed you inside, landing on your side.
you sat up as puffy spoke, ânow if you behave for a little we might consider letting you join, or return to your companions.â she locked the door again, spinning the key. quickly you went to the bars, shaking them a couple of times. you knew it was futile, only the width of your arm could fit between those bars.
moving back in the cell you sat against the wall, sighing while tilting your head back. this was gonna be a long few days wasnât it.
- - - - - - - - - -Â
you woke up to the sound of the cell door opening, jolting up. pain shot through your shoulder when you sat up, staring with wide eyes at the door. dream stood there, bandages and gauze in his hands. he stared at you before clearing his throat, âpuffy sent me to clean your wounds.â the raider muttered, walking towards you.
before he could reach you your back had hit the wall, distrust dwelling in your stomach. dreamâs posture was slack, relaxed and unafraid, clearly he didnât take you as a threat for now. no words were spoken as you slowly turned, huffing while showing him your back first.
the sound of him sitting down was the only noise in the cell, besides hearing your own breathing. when he stopped moving the noise of his breathing became clear as well, and oddly your breaths had been in sync. you flinched when a rag touched your shoulder wound, clearly he had doused it in gauze to clean and disinfect it. he stopped moving for a moment, waiting before slowly wiping the rag down the cut. it wasnât necessarily long, just a deep stab in your shoulder, which hurt like all hell.
after a moment of repetitive wipes to the wound, he removed the rag, using his other hand and tugging your sleeve down. you bit your lip to distract yourself, fidgeting with your hands. âlift your arm.â his voice was surprisingly soft, calm to an extent. you did as instructed, wincing, though all he did was begin to wrap the bandage around your shoulder. he lifted a hand, gently pulling your arm down after heâd looped the bandage around the front, pulling the rest down onto the flat of your wound.
he cut the bandage off, though his other hand stayed on your arm for a moment longer before he removed it. you shifted, turning around and holding your arms out. the gauze rag he had used was tainted with a light red, though he still used it to clean the shallow cuts to your arms. his hands moved slowly, and you watched him work, closely studying his expression, or lack thereof, and his hands.Â
when he finished bandaging your arms his head tilted to look you in the face. silence settled between you two, only the sound of your breathing filled the room.
âwhyâre you listening to puffy and helping me?â your voice came as a surprise to even yourself, having blurted out the words.
dream only stared back before a smile formed on his expression. âpuffy was right. you are amusing.â his tongue clicked, raising a hand and pulling his bandana back. piercing, green eyes stared at you, bright somehow even in the darkness of the cell, a taunting, yet charming smile painting his face. âiâm glad i chose you over the fox.â dreamâs words were practically purred out, voice filled with amusement. you couldnât help the small blush that spread to your face, both from his eyes and sudden change in voice. âtry and get some more sleep doll, we have a long couple of days to go.â he leaned towards you, grinning before patting the top of your head.
the bandana returned to cover his eyes after he gathered the gauze rag and bandages, walking out of the cell and locking it. you stared wide-eyed at the spot he once sat at and the cell door. a sharp breath left you, one you didnât realize you were even holding. who the fuck was this raider? and who did dream think he was to do that to you? but most importantly, what did he mean?
- - - - - - - - - -
dream had visited you a couple more times over however long it had been. mainly he had been bringing you food and water, his excuse was always, âpuffy sent me down to do thisâ. the more he used it the less you cared, you were tired of that excuse, you just wanted to know what he saw in you that had him coming back.
on the brighter side, you had met a few of the other crewmates. quackity and karl were the two you had passed before below deck, they seemed fun and even cracked jokes with you despite you being in a cell. they had made you laugh for the first time since you got here, it was refreshing too. you had also met ranboo, the half endermen, and punz, the one who had looked dead inside. though it was more you had heard his name was punz, from ranboo who had been coming down to check on some storage.
anytime you tried to ask how long youâd been down here you never got a certain answer, just an âuhhhâ and then a shrug, or being flat out ignored. at this rate you were tempted to shimmy out of the bars and see if there was a window you could jump out of. it felt like you could swim to shore with how long you had been cooped up in here.Â
you heard his footsteps again, he had come by enough for you to recognize them. turning, you looked at the cell door, focusing back in, seeing dream walking. something hopped in your stomach, seeing him carry a tray of food and a glass of water.Â
he opened the cell door again, âpuffy had me-â you interrupted him, âoh quit the fucking excuse, if youâre gonna bring me something at least tell me why youâre coming.â dream looked mildly shocked you had snapped at him, shoulders stiffening.
his jaw clenched while he set the food down, water beside it. you grabbed the food, picking up the bread and biting into it. cold as always, âwell? you gonna talk or you gonna keep shoving your head into your ass?â you swoop your hand in a vague âget it goingâ gesture.
dream paused again before laughing, sitting down. âiâve always been interested in you. since that first raid we pulled on your island,â he started, while you slowly continued to eat, âwhen we lost and were retreating you didn't shout in victory like the other island protectors did. you turned around and helped the others of your island, checked on them, made sure they were fine, and began to help set up housing for those who had temporarily lost it from our cannonballs.â his words slowed considerably, pausing to breathe.Â
another smile formed on his expression, though not a mocking one, âsomething about you drew me in, something i canât explain.â dream undid his bandana, resting it on one of his crossed legs. he leaned forward and towards you. his eyes scoured your expression, looking for something, which had developed a look of mild shock. you didnât think he paid that much mind to you before they had taken you.
he leaned back, standing up and tying his bandana back on. dream offered a hand out, âyour days in the cell are up.â a grin split across his expression when you took his hand, stumbling after pulling yourself up. âoh doll, youâre gonna love it here.âÂ
dream led you out of the cell, careful to support you to avoid you falling or stumbling, even as you climbed the stairs. the daylight burned you eyes when you saw it again, squinting up at the clouds before glancing around. the crew had all gathered by the stairs, puffy in the front.
you paused to glance at dream, who was still grinning, before looking at puffy. she was smiling, taking strides towards you. the ram hybrid stared down at you for a moment, letting the silence ring out before she spoke.
âwe want you to join ethereal fury.â puffy offered, âwe all here believe youâd fit right in with us, training as a team, close as a family, and forming a bond with everyone here.â the ram hybrid hummed, finishing her small speech.
silence sat between you two again, the only noise was the waves rocking the boat. dreamâs grip on your shoulder tightened slightly, but not as to intimidate you into joining, more of anticipation.Â
a small smile formed on your face, âsure.â why not try it? youâd probably return home eventually anyways, right? the crew burst out into cheers, karl running at you and pulling you into a hug, âwelcome!â he shouted, shaking you slightly.
they were so trusting of you. but why? theyâd barely known you, didnât know if youâd say yes to joining. it made no sense to be this trustworthy.
dream pulled you away from karl, pulling you into a tight hug while quackity shouted something about getting the tequila and rum out. âwelcome to the team, glad to have you here.â he shifted back slightly, using a hand to tilt your head up and kissing your forehead, smiling. a blush rapidly spread across your face, eyes widening slightly, and your posture and expression momentarily falling slack.
maybe this was the start of something new, a good new, and frankly? you couldnât wait to see where it led.

World Building Wednesday!~ Etherium
đź I decided to share one of my AU worlds that is not Fell based. Yes... I know... what is the world coming to? Etherium in essence is my stab at an Outertale based universe though the story and the designs are very different. I really enjoy this one though I donât talk about it too much. Letâs get started!Â
Etherium AU
Classification: Outertale Alternate âNicknamesâ Info:Â
Sans: Nova- Nova is the trickster though he is mostly associated with that of Loki. Loki is described specifically as âPlayful, malicious ( ok maybe not that one), helpful, and nihilistic.â He helps others in a kind of goofy over the top way. He just doesnât take much seriously. Nova is one of the youngest. He acts very childish at times coming to question how long he has been among the pantheon. Some argue his many centuries gave him a nihilistic outlook on life or that he is too young to understand the true ways of the world.Â
Not to say that Nova canât be serious but he is pretty laid back. Itâs one of the reasons unlike the others he doesnât really keep his cultural ties in his design. He should have more Norse in it but nah⌠varsity jackets are cozy right? I mean he is wearing star shorts for stars sake. When asked about his job he mentions, âHey, there kiddo. Nice of ya to drop by. Been up to? Heh well got a ânewâ job which is pretty cool. Not as cool as Pollux but I help arrange stars. Ya know, like the ones you see in the sky you can make pictures out of? I think you humans call em⌠constellations. One time I made this giant whoopee cushion one. âThen I lost ma job. Got a second chance though. Andromeda's constantly watchin me. hehe no harm done though.â  Both Pollux and Nova refer to each other as brothers but it is unclear if they are biologically related. Their abilities and strengths are nearly opposite and their mythos even more so.
Papyrus: Pollux- The presumed older brother of Nova. Pollux is associated with Egyptology specifically wisdom. Pollux tends to be the opposite of Nova in that he takes his job very seriously. Once on earth he was known as Thoth gracing humanity with a mechanical and architectural knowledge that astounded the world. His mind and intellect put him at the forefront of innovation making him one of Capricorn's best and most trusted advisors.Â
He enjoys testing the mental prowess of others using puzzles and riddles of his own design. Unlike canon Pap Pollux cares more about balance in life. Something his younger brother seems to lack. Not all work and not all play. He is kind, helpful, and willing to give advice to anyone that is looking for it. To the little human Frisk he is a good mentor and teacher. (Pollux has made it his pastime to create a series of challenges to prove a humans worth. If they pass then they are able to speak/ see them. No one has managed to prove themselves.)Â Â Â Â Â
(more characters and info below the cut)
Undyne: Andromeda- Andromeda is not different from canon Undyne as she embodies the Mayan mythology. She is mostly closely associated with the feathered serpent QuetzalcĂłatl. A deity of wind and rain. Also known as the life giver. Though Andromeda tends to harken back to her more aggressive roots she has a deep respect for the King and acts as his guard. Just like Pollux she too acts as an advisor, though more on matters of security than strategy or mechanics. Such a position is where she first met Elara and to this day the two are inseparable sharing their very different cultures. Her favorite kind of anime to watch are mech based.
Alphys: Elara- Very similar to canon Alphys just as this version of Undyne is. Alphys is based off of Sukuna-Biko-Na (ĺ°ĺćŻĺ¤éŁ) or the shinto god of medicine and rain. Elara is still very much a scientist and one that has a unique fascination with living things. Everything from the planets, to humans, animals, and plant life. She particularly enjoys spending time in her private greenhouse creating and taking care of all of the plant life. Before the monsters were forced to leave their place among the humans she was able to collect all the DNA of the plants and animals on the planet.Â
They are stored in a kind of ark in which to preserve them if anything threatens their existence. Elara is very traditional in her work as her medicines are derived from her magic as well as herbal substances. She is very curious however as she is not allowed to interact with the progress of humanity but rather watches from afar. This is where her love of anime takes hold. Her favorites are ones like Sailor Moon or any type of magical girl anime. She will sit with Andromeda and watch them for hours. Her demeanor is very shy at first but once she opens up she will be a friend for life.
Asgore: Capricorn- The head of the cosmic pantheon he is the King as he is in the original. He is associated with Celtic mythos though he has taken on many pantheon roles in his lifetime. Ambisagrus, a god of thunder and lightning, Ancestor God, Sky God, God of Wind, Rain & Hail is what he is based off of. One such role is that of Zeus whoâs main symbol is that of lightning and thunder. Just like the Zeus of mythology Capricorn is constantly debating his involvement with humanity.Â
Whether that be to stop their technological advances or aiding in their lives. A large portion of his time was spent with his subjects not so much his wife Aurora who is the jealous type. Capricorn is not a ruthless leader but he does know that sometimes hard decisions must be made. Just like UT Asgore he is kind and benevolent, however, he has a temper if you make him angry enough. His magical abilities lean more toward lighting then fire but he has that ability as well. He tasked Elara to watch over human development should a problem arise. Â
Toriel: Aurora- The Queen to Capricorn she is known to be easily jealous. It would explain why Zeus wife Hera also shares these traits. Her Gaelic deity tie is that of Arianrhod a goddess of the moon and stars. She creates life from the stars she creates sometimes causing them to take a form of their own. They are almost like living constellations. Some say that the Queen made such life to combat her own loneliness which her Son and Husband spent time away. In addition to the stars she is also known for being a loving mother and caregiver. In her time on earth she used to watch over and protect children and their families. Aurora though previously jealous of her simple in the universe has come to accept and embrace it. She is kind but rather over protective. Anyone that forsakes life will feel her wrath. Â
Muffet: Umbra- Umbra is associated with Hindu mythology as a goddess of wealth and prosperity. Though earthly riches do not concern Umbra she still has a taste for the fine silks and gold that she once had on earth. A little about the goddess that she represents: Lakshmi's name comes from the Sanskrit word âlaksya, meaning an aim or goal. She is the goddess of wealth and prosperity, both material and spiritual. Unlike UT Muffet, Umbra also focuses on a spiritual wealth. A peace of mind.Â
She is ever the optimist even when things do not turn out to go her way. In times of need she is called those in the struggles of self worth trying to bring them into a different understanding. There have been many a time when Umbra calms Capricorns quick and rash judgements, much to Auroras displeasure. Just as with the rest of the pantheon she is kind and helpful even with her yearning to return to the people she so loved before they were forced to the outskirts of the galaxy.
Grillby: Helio- Helio derived from sun is my OT Grillby. He out of all the characters could care less about either being a deity or an observer. He is known to be at a middle ground. He would rather live his days running a social establishment but during his time on earth he was known for his magic. Originally he was the right hand of Capricorn being depicted as a war deity for his fiery nature. He was the general of grand armies. His armor is something he hung up long ago but if called into court he will wear it once again. Itâs design is very reminiscent of Roman centurions. Â
Though depictions of him are curious since his name back then was referred to as Merlin. He was best known for him magic and alchemy and the concoctions he made during a period of time far lacking in imagination. Just like Nova, Helio, tended to interfere far too often in the affairs of man though noble in purpose. He tends to be outcast among the pantheon for his past conduct but he is content in his lab mixing crazy concoctions. Everything from love potions to disguises. His forte is all about alchemy and magic.   Â
Asriel: Azicree (Azi)- Azicree or Azi for short is the Crown Prince. By monster standards Azi is still very young, however, he has lived for far longer than any human can fathom. His mother used to shelter him until he begged for his father to let him prove himself. He still acts like a child always curious and desiring some form of exploration. Much to Capricorns dismay Azi enjoys spending time with Nova and the two become pranksters in general. He tends to not do as he is told, which is why they are in this mess in the first place. His reckless behavior had him appearing to a human that begged for his salvation.Â
The matters of life and death are ones that are not to be messed with. Those that do find their souls being tainted for all eternity turning them into something other than just a monster. 9X is an example of such tampering. Azi does learn his lesson and begins to try and shape up to be a worthy successor to his father if such a thing ever did come to pass. He studies off of all those he knows especially Pollux who is more than happy to share such knowledge. His associations are non existent since he was born after the times of gods. His abilities seem to be mimic based.Â
He is able to learn about abilities and use them at will. It is rare that monsters have children and as such Azi is the little prodigy child even though there are many times he just wants to be a kid. He makes friends with Frisk very quickly and learn a lot from the human visitor. Â
Gaster: Nero is the Gaster of this universe. He is Capricorns pantheon counterpart. In essence the Hades to his Zeus. He is the monster that everyone thinks about when darkness takes hold. He is the one that associates with apocalyptic events such as ragnarok. He is however not evil by any stretch of the imagination. He would be better suited to be called a god of chaos. He tends to reject the laws placed upon the rest of the pantheon regardless of repercussions.Â
Itâs speculated that both Pollux and Nova were a part of him and crafted into the monsters that are known today. Nova being his more devious side which Pollux is more his intellect and drive. He has been locked away for a very long time in a prison aptly named Tarturus. His abilities are space and time oriented very similar to Nova which makes him difficult to imprison. He of course has been in his cell for quite some time and it is unclear if he actually has had a change of heart or using it as a manipulation tactic.Â
The only one he speaks with on occasion is Azi wanting to learn more about this planet they all used to call home. It is information that the others tend to not speak of. His father more so as he is afraid it will instill a yearning in his son. Neroâs genius is on par with his godly abilities such as creating artificial intelligence. Something that is not considered life. He uses Azi as a template for this new program... Â
FLOWEY:Â
F- Friendly
L- Life-like
O- Operating systemÂ
W- WithÂ
E- Earthbound
Y- Yearning
F.L.O.W.E.Y was created by 9x and Nova with Azi as a template. He is a charismatic AI who was originally created as a helper as well as to teach the Prince about their planet of origin. Unfortunately Flowey does not have the same reservations about disobeying his father as Azi does. Even going so far as to integrate with key and vital systems in The Capital. He even manages to intercept a human vessel that he finds exploring. Flowey is not evil he just is driven to be the best help he can without regards to any type of consequences. He helps Frisk meet and learn more about their existence. He acts as a companion.Â
However when Frisk becomes friends with Azi Flowey's AI goes haywire. He begins to feel emotions he is not technically allowed to such as jealousy. This causes him to try and eliminate those threatening him which in this case would be all the monsters. Eventually Azi attempts to program himself into the interface changing itâs initial programming. Â

Background and Context:Â
A long time ago there lived beings of great power. They could bend space and time with a simple thought and bring life to their creations. These were the gods. Ones of great benevolence but also great and terrifying power. Humanity, a primitive race just starting to understand life itself, became their focus. At first their interaction was very rare only occasionally appearing to help but as time went on those interactions became more drastic. Their assistance and knowledge was seen as godlike to this humans.Â
They would bring gifts and offerings to their new deities in hopes that they would look favorably upon them. That they would impart their wisdom and magic if they were pleased. In time this became more and more tradition. A religion built upon pleasing these deities so that their lives would be far improved but this became a conundrum for the beings. Some remained benevolent and helpful while others becomes greedy and wrathful. The power began to go to their minds corrupting their souls. These instances were written down in variation by the humans making up grandiose stories of fiery chariots and jealous gods. Thus mythology came into being for humanity. A way to explain the things in which they did not understand.Â
As with each religion and deity the monsters each became associated with a specific culture or mythos. Some being pinnacles of their pantheon and others being lesser deities molded to suit a specific task. These monsters rarely interacted with ones of their own kind but as power shifted some of them took on roles of others. One monster could have been the god of war in Greek mythos but end up also as the god of thunder in Norse. There were no limitations to their influence. One such âdeityâ was that of the trickster. A monster that tended to be rather childish in his ambitions jumping from pantheon to pantheon looking to lighten up his other âdeitiesâ stern demeanors.Â
The monsters began to pull away leaving their presences in name only and occasional help but this was short lived. It caused problems, war, destruction, and feuding powers sadly began to use their civilizations as almost pawns. Their meddling almost destroyed that which they wanted to originally protect. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The âgodsâ faded from existence only being remembered in myths and legends. The great prophecy of the Norse. The architectural marvels of the Egyptians. Now they reside in the furthest reaches of the galaxy. They spread out among the stars but a group of them resided in a Capital of sorts. A station at the edge of the Universe. One which no human could ever reach. Â
The Humans Impressions:
When the monsters left the humans to their own devices they worship continued long after. Eventually the magic and the miracles that had once been performed faded into history. The monsters were all but forgotten unless mentioned in mythology or scary stories. The humans never harbored any animosity toward them since they no longer believed in their existence in any form. They only understand what their ancestors depicted them as. The monsters as well donât really have anything against humans either. All in all, they just go about their jobs and enjoy the universe, helping from time to time discreetly if need be but never showing their faces.
Main Plot Synop:Â
The plot to Outertale is very simple as it is more based around the world than it is the actual plot. It is very similar to that of the regular UT timeline with some notable differences. Once the humans reach an age of technological advancement they begin to spread out and search the stars. Some of them encounter monsters which they mistake for aliens (hilarious enough. I mean Jerry looks like an alien.) They begin to build colonies living more and more outside the reach of their own galaxy. Humans however tend to turn on their own creating factions within the space colonies. Some more prosperous than others.Â
Friskâs colony was one such beast being cut off from the other colonies as a drifter. Unfortunately Friskâs family was nearly non existent and being stuck on a space colony was little to be desired. After seeing a streak of fire slamming into the outskirts of the colony. Frisk decides to investigate. They have always been the curious type disobeying orders and questioning everything. The colonies outer and more dangerous regions became their playground finding old pieces of technology. Eventually they stumble upon a crashed ship. One that It seems to damaged to be used but itâs nothing like they have ever seen before. Everyone else on the colony consider it to be cursed.Â
The strange runic language is confusing but Frisk finds that there is one lone computer onboard that seems to still function. It flickers with a bright yellow light showing an almost pixelated Flower with a =) face on the screen. Over the next few days Frisk returns to decipher the runes with the help of their new friend which they find out is called Flowey. It is a project that the curious human enjoys and for once it is nice to have a friend. Eventually the runes are deciphered claiming some sort teleportation capability. Once Frisk is close enough the system fires up on its own sending the human straight to the monster Capital on the farthest reaches of the universe. A place that no human has ever been.  Â
The rest of the story is an exploration of this new environment. Frisk befriends the monsters who donât attack first. They actually mostly want to engage with the human showing off their ability a little bit. A part of them misses the previous worship. Nova seems to take a particular interest in this new human especially when they befriend Azi. They work to help shut Flowey down only for Azi to impart his knowledge on the interface helping it understand. Frisk has nothing to return to so they stay with the monster and become Aziâs human tutor so that one day maybe the monsters can return and live side by side the humans once again. Both Azi and Frisk are almost like siblings coined the star children. Â

Dr. Jerkyll and Mr. Hyde (Yandere Leech twins x reader)
An au idea I had came to mind based off @yandere-wishes Victorian twst story and @yandere-romanticaa 's Extraterrestrial story.
I love these two eels and I'm late on their birthday but it's still their birthday for me.
The clear moonlit sky shown brightly over the waters of the ocean. As yet another scream echoed within the streets of a supposedly vacant city.
The detective woke up with a start but not from the scream, but from the ringing of her phone. A report she had been writing stuck to her face from the humid atmosphere. She picked it up getting a few details from Idia, who was panicking on the other side of the line. Considering he worked in the criminal department at the desk and didn't have to see any bodies whatsoever you would think he'd be calm when trying to say what happened.
"Calm down Idia. Tell me what happened?" Her voice was gentle since yelling wouldn't help his nerves.
"Therewasanothermurder! Theyclaimedanothervictim!" He spoke so fast that his words wouldn't be understood by most but she was used to this with him and every word was caught by the detective's ears.
"Where's the crime scene?"
"In front of Sam's shop on Crystal Road, Ms. Y/n L/n." The voice of Idia's younger sibling popped up a contrasting his older brother's cowardly behavior.
He wanted to be just like his older brother so he spent his days in the office with him. Though there were times when Idia tapped out and his brother had to step in.
"Thank you both. I'll head their now." She hung up after hearing a farewell from both brothers.
The candle was long out and she grabbed her gun, notebook, and pen within the darkness, before venturing out the confines of her home.
When she got there a crowd had surrounded one spot in particular.
Cater was already there taking photos of the scene as it was his job being a forensic photographer.
"Hey, hey! Y/n's here, make way!" The crowd parted for her as soon as he announced her presence.
Whispers were muttered as she passed through into the middle of the crime scene. Mostly about how she hadn't caught this killer yet. She ignored them though and went on to meet with her coworker.
"It never ceases to amaze me how your always here first Cater, if anything you should be a suspect." She started off saying to her compatriot.
"Can't help it if I want to stay informed dectective, I just want to stay informed before anyone else." His smile on his face was out of place as he took another photo of the corpse.
"Who was it this time?"
"Such a poor fate to befall dear Monsieur Heart." A new voice joined in the conversation.
"Rook, I see you've arrived but can I get their name please?" The detective said sighing at the theatrics of her friend.
"His name was Ace Trappola, I can't imagine how Monsieur Spade must be feeling about this tragedy." Rook feigned a sorrowful look.
"Oh yeah A-Deuce kun were inseparable, I feel sorry for him. Think he knows already?"
"If there as inseparable as you say Cater then I suppose not, he isn't here yet otherwise I'm sure he'd cause a scene." She noted.
"That doesn't make him a suspect though right? I mean sure he's been a suspect in many crimes before, but Deuce kun far too soft!" Cater was a bit frantic at the thought alone.
"No, I doubt it was him he wouldn't want to disappoint his mother with something as vulgar as murder, he cares for her far too much to do that." That calmed his worries.
"You know I've heard Monsieur Heart have many laments on how his delivery to Roi d' Rose-" Cater didn't let Rook finish.
"RIDDLE?! No way he did this! Have you seen how strict his mother is? Just waltzing in their office and so much as suspecting her son is a one way ticket to hearing her screams! Besides I doubt his mother would even let him out this late anyway, he's always about following the rules set in place for him." Cater says with an imaginary sweat that could have formed to express his fear and anxiety.
"True, and I can't afford another headache from that lady, but we could get some valuable intel from him about Trappola's demeanor the past few days seeing as it may be a pattern in the serial killers motives."
"What about Sam? He's gotta know something considering the murder occurred in front of his shop." Cater's gaze went toward the shop to the right of them.
"Ah the shop keep, a wonderfully eccentric man with many secrets." Rook stated his opinion of him from what he gathered on his own free time.
"Says the French man whose got info on everyone from stalking them on the street." The detective says shaking her head at the strange man next to her who happily smiled at her statement.
"I wouldn't call it that more so getting to know my prey more personally." She sighed hearing his reply.
"A crime analyst such as yourself is such a good cover up!" Cater's response made her sigh once again.
She shook her head toward her coworkers. They took their job in a mild manner but beyond that they did do well to get it done. Even though the means of how they did it were very much questionable in her eyes.
She looked toward the ground seeing the body of the former male right on the cusp of adulthood. His orange hair was a bit disheveled and the looks of shock on his face petrified in time.
"Ah, the dectective is already using those perceptive eyes of hers." Cater's words fell on deaf ears as she was examining the crime scene closely.
"As expected of Reine de la dÊduction, such dedication in her work. Très bien!"
Their bones were disfigured, just like the last person. No one has this type of strength it didn't make any sense. The only lead that was given but she noticed a glowing substance in his mouth.
"Cater, Rook, I need some confirmation. Out of all the other times these cases have been appearing there weren't any liquid substances to be found beside the occasional blood right?"
"You are correct."
"Yeah, nothing else to be found from what I could see." They both confirmed her suspicion.
She had to go talk to Jade again, but first thing tomorrow she had to interrogate Sam, as well as Riddle Rosenhearts which was sure to be headache on her part.
* * *
His mother was an agitation to say the least. During her entry into his mother's office and upon stating the reason for her entry, Riddle's mother had already hated her the moment she finished speaking. Yelling and hollering about how her son would never commit such a crime even though the dectective never stated he was a suspect in the slightest.
She only asked to question the behavior of Mr.Trappola as of late before he met his end. He was under no suspicion whatsoever but she wasn't having that and kept screeching until her son had to calm her down.
It was much more pleasant afterwards but the headache Y/n had in the early morning just listening to her screeching didn't disappear throughout the whole endeavour.
Just before she bid him farewell he apologized deeply for his mother's behavior with a red face of complete embarrassment. To which she replied it was alright and thanked him for his time. Unfortunately though she had to bear that burden on her own as Rook and Cater had their own jobs to partake in analyzing the other crimes and investigating the trend within the series of murders. It was unfair but that was life. By the time she exited their establishment it was already in the afternoon a little after lunch.
Next was to venture to Sam's shop which was right where the crime had taken place. The body was already removed and taken to forensics, so the only thing left was a broken street lamp.
"Ah, well if isn't the dectective, I believe I already know the pleasure of seeing you here on this fine day," He tipped his hat to her with a smile on his face.
"Afternoon to you too Sam. I would like to acquire any information you have on the murder of Ace Trappola that occurred last night, in front of your establishment."
"Such a shame the little demon, was too young to have bite the dust. But you know as well as I my information comes with a price."
"A thousand madols should suffice a description of what you saw right?" She questioned handing a stack of the paper currency to which he smiled at.
"All I know is that last night was certainly something else. I heard a smash of a lamppost outside my window, up on the second floor. Shop was already closed though. When I looked down I saw what looked to be two silhouettes outside the window. One way taller than the other though, I recognized of Trappola on the ground and something glowed within the hands of the killer, a vial of sorts. He poured it down the throat of the little demon, but Trappola put up a good fight before it was over."
"Over? Can you specify?"
"As in he was left on the ground for dead, it looked like he was choking on whatever was consumed. The killer held him tightly after he realized he was choking. It was similar to a hug but one that was more deadly than a normal one. After he dropped him to the ground and walked away laughing hysterically at who he squeezed."
"And you weren't going to go to the police to inform that you had witnessed the murderer of a serial killer!" Her voice had raised a bit in volume as her agrevated state didn't alleviate since earlier in the day.
"I'm not one to get involved in others private life, Dectective. I've got a business to run." She understood his point though exhaling a sigh through her nose.
"Right. If you want to keep your life you keep your mouth shut. Alright I thank you for the intel." The dectective closed her notebook after writing down many notes on the case.
"Pleasure doing business with ya, Dectective! Best of luck to you as well! You'll be needing it more than anyone." She was only able to hear the first part of it not when his cheery demeanor went away.
She walked out to her final destination of the day, a close friend of hers. His name was Jade Leech, a smart man that excelled in pharmaceuticals just as did Riddle's mother but in a more different sense. His potions were revolutionary with in the subject of alchemy and his botany skills and knowledge made his fame and fortune.
He's helped her on countless cases before, with his expertise in potions it aided in knowing key components to solving head bangers such as this.
As she reached the door of his manor she knocked before waiting a moment or two to see his smile.
"Dectective, how pleasant it is to see you today." He flashed his signature smile toward me, with pearly teeth straight and white.
"It's nice to see you too Jade. May I come in?"
"Your always welcome here, though I must say you do look exhausted how about I put on some tea?" He made way for me to step in.
"You don't have to Jade."
"I insist, naturally I should show good hospitality to all my visitors. Your free to take a seat wherever you like."
"So how are your mushrooms doing?" She said starting up conversation on a favorable topic for him. He was in the kitchen that connected to the empty dining room, that opened the way to the living room where she sat.
"I imagine you didn't come here just to speak on how my mushrooms are doing alone?" He spoke it in the form of a question but he already knew the answer with a knowing smile on his face that she couldn't see but knew he had.
"You are right, my apologies, I actually require your aid with a substance that could be the key in solving the recent serial killings." She watched as he walked in with two plates in hand.
"It's fine, I'm glad you can come to me for help." He served the two plates, one in front of her and the other in front of himself.
They had pasta on both of them with the mushrooms I mentioned. It smelled heavenly. Her stomach growled loudly which caused Jade to laugh lightly.
"I'm assuming you haven't eaten much of anything have you?"
"No I had too much work to do today." She blushed looking away from him.
He sighed making a small 'tsk' noise.
"You have got to take better care of yourself, that dedication of yours is admirable but otherwise you'll drive yourself into an early grave with that sort of work ethic." He chastised.
"Ah, I just don't have the time these days, I'm sorry for all the trouble you have to go through for me." Her eyes traveled toward the food with a slight guilty feeling.
"You speak as if your some sort of burden on me, quite the contrary I worry for your safety and yours alone. You may be a skilled dectective but, I care for your well being first."
Her face grew to an intolerable temperature that would make people think she was sick. She was very much surprised by his words. The first time anyone has ever said anything that endearing to her in a while.
So to ignore the feeling of her heart racing she picked up her plate kept her eyes trained on it. Her expression looked to resemble pouting.
"L -let's just eat then shall we?" She stumbled on her first word internally cursing as she heard Jade's laughter.
. . .
After they had eaten Y/n had spent some time explaining to Jade the situation with Trappola's murder and handed him the vile of the substance found at the crime scene.
He listened attentively and chimed in few times for clarity. He said he would have the analysis of the substance done within two days. Soon enough she was on her way out the door even though he had offered her to stay the night she had declined politely. It wasn't weird since they were close friends with one another anyway. Not to mention there were times where she would fall asleep while waiting for Jade to finish his analysis and he would be nice enough to place her in a room.
"Thank you Jade, I would have loved to spend more time with you, but I've been really busy as of late with all these murders." She thought for a moment and then looked up at him. He was a bit tall, scratch that he was tall, of course so she got on the tips of her toes and placed a kiss on his cheek to show him her gratitude.
Jade's face lit a flame, cheeks flushed as he touched where her lips made contact.
"I'll see you later." Was all she said before walking away briskly passed the gates of his house not looking back.
She would've heard the glass breaking inside the male's house in which indicated another presense inside.
. . .
Two days had passed and the dectective was trying to piece together what was the link between these series of murders.
She had to go check with Lilia who is the pathologist that had completed an autopsy on all the bodies of the victims. As eccentric as he was he was more tolerable than the combo of intricacies that are her co workers. Then again everyone in this office was weird in their own way.
"Ah, dectective what great weather we're having today, is it not?" He said with a smile on his face.
Unlike Jade he was significantly shorter than him so she had to look down a little to see him or stand a few feet away.
"It is indeed, Lilia. You seem to be in a good mood today."
"That is because I have made a breakthrough on today, while working through the night." His smile grew and the magenta eyes affirmed his happiness toward the news he had to share.
"On Mr. Trappola's body, I have found something strange but interesting nevertheless! A scale and not only that, but there is something you should see for yourself!" He brought her over to said man's corpse luckily the bottom half of his body is covered and the top half as well up to his shoulders.
Lilia grabbed one of his tools for dissection and beckoned her to come closer as she showed her what he had found. That's when she saw it.
Lilia had a small knife and maneuvered it to a small spot itself, lifting up a small piece of skin that was already slit and based on the size of the knife and similarity to another a butter knife it wouldn't have been able to cut the skin.
"There are two more like this on this side of his neck and three on the other side. So it seems like they're gills.
"What about the other bodies?"
"I spent the night examining those as well and they all have the same gills but Trappola here is the only one who had a few scales."
"So maybe the substance has something to do with these oddities on him. Trappola probably ingested some."
"It's quite possible that whoever this murderer is trying to test the substance on the person instead of themselves but based on Trappola's few scales being the latest attempt it seems they are making improvement for whatever the elixir's use is. These strange characteristics it reminds me of some fairytale I heard some time ago." He drifted off sounding like an old man reminiscing.
"Enlgihten me then Lilia." Knowing just how Lilia liked to ramble on about myths and legends like he'd seen them and lived through their stories.
"Well if you insist but this one involves merfolk certainly you've heard of mermaids and such right these scales on legs don't they remind you of those types of things. Gills on their necks so that half people half fish would gain the ability to breath underwater."
"Ah right but this is reality. Seeing is believing though right? Who knows though maybe they could help with the case." She was skeptic hearing about a bunch of lore that could just be coincidental but she knew better than that. Coincidents were more than just preordained.
. . .
Now back at Jade's manor the dectective was contemplating what in the world such a myth could play a factor in a murder scene. It just didn't make any sense as to why the person would need such a potion. What type of person would you have to be to go that f-
She couldn't finish that thought since Jade had opened the door.
"Ah, Jade good day to you-" the dectective looked up toward him to see the tall man staring at her for a bit longer than a few seconds. She did notice the strand of black hair usually on his right was on the left.
Unconsciously she reached up and was about to grab it before her hand was grabbed.
"Just what are you doing little dectective?" His voice got a bit darker towards the end sending shivers down her spine for a second before she saw his eyes in front of her and thought to herself for a second.
'Was his gold eye always on the right?'
A slight tighter squeeze on her hand woke her up form her head. She was reminded of the situation again. She could feel his breath closer to her face, she was internally malfunctioning and was losing her train of focus.
"Ah, I was, I was just trying to flip your black strand of hair." She stuttered and didn't internally curse herself this time since the proximity was still a factor in her brain turning to mush.
Jade suddenly smiled a wide one at that. Usually it'd be small and polite even when teasing he'd have a signature closed eyed smile keeping the adorable image of his flustered dectective in his head. But that wasn't the case this time. This smile was more menacing and sent bad news toward all who saw it.
Jade towered over her a bit more leaning to the right a bit toward her ear.
"Dectective do you know what you remind me of?" He questioned with a wide smile on his face.
He leaned in too close for comfort his breath could be felt on her right ear, while his hand on her shoulder kept her still.
"An adorable little shrimp! I could just eat you up!" He said it slow to build up suspense but it sounded serious and at the same time.
She pushed him away feeling her face heat up tremendously like an oven.
"J -Jade!" She couldn't find the words to describe what she just heard feeling beyond embarrassed and having her heart pound loudly that she swore he could hear.
"I -I have to go, thank you for your time!" She frantically stated about to run off but before she could Jade had grabbed her wrist and pulled her back.
"Aww can't I get a kiss too, little shrimp? Besides aren't you forgetting something?" She was too put off by the request to understand the sentence, but her mind did process part of the sentence and she remembered why she came here.
He held up a folded up sheet of paper in his hands toying with her holding it out of her reach.
How could he say that in such a cool voice? Her nerves couldn't handle so much teasing, it wasn't unlike him but it seemed he had gone over his usual gentlemanly behavior.
She hurriedly kissed him on the cheek in which he hadn't expected such a quick response to his question with a blush on his face becoming apparent and his frozen stature. She took the opportunity to jump up for the paper and ran from near the doorstep bidding farewell with the sheet of paper she had took in hand leaving a blushing male to watch her run out. His smile grew as he saw her frantic behavior, excitement bubbling within him.
He ran outside to the backyard of the mansion to go share his newfound happiness.
. . .
"Jade! Shrimpy is really cute!" The one male spoke to Jade in a tone of voice that was different than that of a few minutes, one that would have made him believe he was Jade himself.
There appearances were so similar, cept for the eyes and voice they were twins after all. With a little makeup and easy voice tone change one could hardly tell the difference anyway.
"I'd thought you'd understand if you saw her up close, Floyd." Jade was actually outside tending to his mushrooms in the garden while his look alike was entertaining the female detective that had left in a hurry. Though knowing his brother he could already assume how it must have went. Thinking of his little dectective being so flustered indefinitely brought out his sadistic side a bit.
"Can we keep her?" Floyd was so fond of her seeing her turn red, hearing her heart beating loudly, when she stuttered and that kiss on the cheek pretty much sealed the deal for him. She was so full of life and it brought excitement for him since he had to stay within the manor and avoid everyone. His behavior would be brash and scare many in the public eye not only that but his strength was inhuman which could cause problems for the person on the receiving end. Especially if you were trying to blend in.
They only came from the sea to see the lives of humans and unlike one of their friends who started a business in this day and age. Jade could survive on land with the ability to easily fool others with a facade whereas Floyd couldn't do that all the time and would probably squeeze someone for no reason other than boredom.
He didn't like being confined but after seeing the dectective sleeping on the couch once, he became curious as to who she was and why Jade spent so much time helping her. He knew for a fact his brother was not at all kind or generous. He was beginning to finally understand.
"We are but you have to be patient, you did give her both sheets of paper before she ran off correct?" His brother inquired finally seeing the hunger in his brother's eyes.
"Yup, she gave me a kiss just so she could distract me and take it. Shrimpy is so cunning she makes me want to squeeze her and pay her back for catching me off guard like that." The thought alone sounded enticing to Floyd, he couldn't wait to wrap his tail around her.
"I need you to go on another 'outing' tonight we have to perfect this first if we want to have any shot at having her to ourselves." Jade's words did nothing to damper his mood as his excitement reached a new level at the thought of showing his little Shrimpy off to everyone.
They were trying to get make a potion in which a human could become a sea creature, though it was easy for Jade to make one for himself and Floyd to come on land. The same can't be said for a person that's been human and has not a single gene that ties them to the ocean. Altering genetics is difficult and delicate and one mistake and their dear little detective could end up just like those poor unfortunate souls that were test subjects. Jade would never risk bringing her with them under the sea if he wasn't sure she'd make it.
"Okay~ Jade!" He said eagerly!
Now that Floyd was on board as well he would be more motivated and inclined to help, making it more easier for Jade as he wouldn't bother and complain so much about being on land longer.
. . .
She barely slept a wink after what had occurred. Every time she thought about her encounter with Jade she'd blush and bury her face into a pillow with frustration.
She tried before to get some of her work done before that, but that didn't work out too well as her mind drifted back to the same situation.
How close he was, the warmth of his breath against her ear, it was enough to make her brain stop functioning as if he were there again.
He seemed far more clingy than usual and she didn't know how to describe it other than strange. The notes from the alchemist were neat and precise and confirmed what Lilia and her examined on the bodies earlier in the day. But that wasn't the only thing that fell from the folded piece of paper. It was another small piece with neat cursive that matched the analytics on the other page.
'Would you like to spend your day off with me?'
Yet another reason she wouldn't be getting much sleep tonight.
. . .
After getting off from work she mentioned to her coworkers how Jade had offered her to spend her day off with him. Well they asked what she was gonna do with her day off since it was a rarity. First Cater asked her if she said yes to him yet. She said no and he understood from the get go that she was way too flustered to even respond to him. So he offered to go respond to him on her phone.
Rook congratulated her and went on a rant about love even though she tried to get through his head it wasn't a date. He asked what she would wear and she had no actual clue, in which Rook took that as an invitation to lend his aid and expertise.
He brought her to one of his friend's businesses. Cater said this place was highly recommended and that anyone whose anyone came to the place for a makeover. Specifically called Vil's beauty salon and boutique. She didn't understand how a person could have both but he seemed to be managing it fine. The said shop owner gave her one look and shook his head at her appearance.
His words were, "What a poor excuse for a girl to go on date with such a potato face such as that, it's shameful for not only you but the guy as well."
He had her try on clothes and by the end of it all, she felt different. Her head hurt from all the pulling around of her hair. She had put on enough clothes that she believed she was playing dress up. The outfit settled upon was different from her usual style and she had on makeup for the first time in her life.
Rook and Cater applauded Vil's work new appearance. The dectective had to admit that when she looked in the mirror she understood why Vil had such a reputation that Cater reccomended him highly.
She had to buy all of it of course and thanked Vil immensely for his efforts. There was actually a discount considering Rook brought her and she looked so 'pathetic'. He had a victoriously smug smile on his face and complimented his own efforts before waving the trio off. She thanked her two coworkers and bid them farewell, looking forward to the her first day off in a millennia.
When she met Jade the next day at his door he was plenty surprised by her appearance. He blushed with his eyes widened in astonishment at the change. Not to mention on the side of the manor Floyd could see just how beautiful she had dressed. It was going to be a long day especially with the heels she was wearing and trying her hardest to walk in.
. . .
The two friends went to Clover's bakery where Jade offered to pay for any sweets she wanted but it seemed they were terribly busy today and the line was a bit long not mention the place was packed inside so there weren't any tables to sit in.
Trey said it was nice to see her out and about for once not on dectective business for once. He said hello to Jade as they were all friends though she only knew Trey from Jade who introduced me. On rare occasions she would go to his bakery for something sweet. He handed them two cupcakes for free but also asked for a favor for him.
"Can you give deliever Riddle this tart please? His mother isn't home and he rarely ever gets anything sweet. I usually have Ace do it but-" He looks away for a moment.
"It's fine, Jade do you-"
"It's no trouble at all, we'd be happy to." He says with an enchanting smile on his face.
Trey handed over the box containing the tart to them and they made their way over to the clinic where Riddle resided.
On the way Jade and her conversed. She asked him why he agreed so quickly and he responded with his own unique answer.
"I know it's in your nature to help others. Yet another fond trait of yours."
It's more embarrassing hearing it for the first time and out loud no less. She could feel her face heat up again.
"Then there's when you turn into a cherry, one of my favorite traits." He said in a teasing tone with a smile toward her making the dectective flush even more and look away biting into her cupcake. To ignore the laughter emitting from her friend alongside her. Now this is the Jade she knows.
. . .
To be completely honest both of them enjoyed their time today with one another. They had delivered Riddle's tart which was almost a complete disaster.
Considering she asked Jade to be lookout in case his mother came back. Long story short she did arrive earlier than expected. After she and Riddle heard her voice outside the walls right near the entrance gate, the dectective told Riddle to go before she found him with the tart. Riddle was far more worried about her but the dectective told him she'd be fine.
By fine she meant ducking in the rose bushes for cover, there weren't any thorns surprisingly all been cut off. She waited for Riddle's mother to enter the house and had to scale the wall that was located next to an alleyway. Climbing up was the easy part but getting down was the hard part. She was wearing heels and that drop looked like she would possibly break a bone if she landed the wrong way.
She came to a decision to take a leap of fate and let her heels drop to the ground. One thought passed about Vil being pissed about her ruining them. She shook her head though and pushed herself off.
Before she could land someone else caught her. Looking up at her savior she saw the two colored eyes of Jade. Who smiled happily at making it on time.
"Ah look at that, my assumption was right. I thought you'd take this route out their place. It would've been such a shame if you were to get injured."
"Thank you Jade, can you put me down now please?"
"I don't think so I'd rather hold you like this until we get to the resturant for everyone to see." He playfully said watching her face heat up.
"Wha-? N -no I can walk on my own!"
"But you might have hurt something besides someone who can't get their words out is akin to a child so they must be coddled correct?" His teasing was endless today.
. . .
After leaving the Monstro Lounge a business run by one of Jade's friends, Azul Ashengrotto, the sun had already long set.
"Let me accompany you to your apartment, Y/n it's supposedly dangerous to be out after dark correct? Or you can just spend the night again?" He offered.
"I have to decline besides I've already used enough of your generosity I don't want to take it for granted. It's been such a great day thanks to you Jade, wish we could do these more often cept for the fact I have work tomorrow." She said in a relaxed tone.
Despite all the teasing she really did enjoy herself with the man. Having her heart beating loudly all day and having her brain short circuit was all too amusing to the man beside her, but out of everyone else even his own brother she made him feel strangely different. He couldn't explain the feeling itself, but he knew for a fact he'd never do all of this for someone he would use.
"You wish to spend more time with me? I can grant that you know." Jade had said that so simply and out of the blue but in a calm tone as well.
"There's no way you can do something like that but I appreciate the thought. It's fine though you've done enough already. I'd rather not burden you with a simple wish." She said with content.
Before he could respond to that statement fast footsteps hurried over to them both and made the pair turn around.
"I saw the killer it was Mr.Leech! He ran away from the scene!" His hair was a light green, eyes full of life and the loud tone of his voice was distinct.
"Sebek what do you mean you saw Jade kill someone he was with me the entire time!We just left the Monstro Lounge Azul saw us leave!" The dectective was defensive pertaining to justice being served, not to mention her friend was being accused and she had been with him the entirely of the day.
"No it was him I saw him Felmier was killed by him!"
"Felmier was killed?! You should've started with that! Take me to the body did you make sure he was dead?!"
. . .
Sebek had spread all about the town that Jade was the murderer even though the people who had seen us together throughout the day vouched. Trey, Riddle, Azul, Rook, and Cater even Vil had seen them together. Some actually took Sebek's words in and started to distrust Jade even so.
Vil and Rook two friends of Felmier had paid for the funeral costs as Epel's family was struggling. It was admirable to see the young man take on the vicious job as Vil's protĂŠgĂŠ. It really was a shame. Vil actually kept up a face and Rook though he looked upon the casket with blank like expression it was easy to tell he was out for blood. Jade did show up to pay his respects even though some glared at him and were suspicious.
Vil came up to dectecrive during the repass and told her to make that fool pay dearly. She would of course no argument there. Epel had been a good kid and may have been a bit brash but still good nonetheless. So was Ace.
And thus a good day ended on a sour note.
The dectective would have more sleepless nights. Lilia performed an autopsy on Epel's body with Vil standing by his side to make sure he didn't damage it. Even he was shocked to see more and more scales near his legs and gills that were more prominent.
These people were getting even more closer to there goal it seemed and she couldn't do a thing. She was so frustrated at that fact alone. Jade's analysis did help some though. Looking through shops though that sold what would be the components of the elixir nothing suspicious could be found in any of the people who had brought those items. Not to mention those who did didn't have all the items brought from another store, there was no reoccurring name in sales.
Speaking of Jade though she had begun to think back to Sebek. He wasn't the type to lie not on the name of the mysterious nobleman Malleus Draconia that he served would he ever embarrass himself to stain his name even slightly. That's what Lilia told her at least.
He said Jade had did the deed. But he was with her the entire time. Come to think Sam's description had also matched Jade's strange behavior before he gave her the analysis, but it didn't make sense. Jade was one person he couldn't be in two places at once!
Maybe someone was trying to frame him and to that extent she went to go question if he had any enemies of the sort. His response was that he didn't have any as far as he knew. That could have been a good lead.
With no others she sighed looking extremely worn out and Jade had a frown seeing her state. He insisted she stay the night and she denied saying she had to finish this case even more so now. He at least offered her a meal in which he put slipped some sleeping pills that made her fall asleep after eating.
Both pairs of two colored eyes gazed at her peaceful state not liking how she'd exhaust herself with so much work. Only for the sake of others and waste time and effort for people that isn't them. It was annoying to Floyd and agitated Jade more than he liked to admit. She did say she wanted to spend more time with them right?? If only she didn't have that stupid job. Even more a reason to push the date up to the next few days.
. . .
About a week and a half had passed and the dectective had no other leads still. It was killing her to say the least. All those unfortunate victims and those families and friends that mourned definitely weighed on her shoulders, guilt eating at her insides. Such a shame too within the end of the day she was at home taking an evening nap on her day off in which she didn't even go out today. Her phone buzzed waking her up from her slumber.
A text from Jade. It had been awhile since they last talked seeing as she fell asleep at his manor again even though she didn't intend to.
Rubbing her eyes she read the text from her bright phone screen.
'Meet me at the dock at 10 today.'
She wasn't as flustered as last time in fact she considered not going as this case took top priority. But this was Jade, her closest friend, and she hadn't taken much of a break as her nap was only 30 mintues probably the only amount of sleep she would get today if she was being honest with herself.
She reluctantly sighed and decided to get ready an hour before meeting him and walk there a bit early to have some time to her own thoughts. She thought about going to Vil's shop to buy another outfit but it would have been a waste if they were only meeting for a short time. Not to mention she didn't want Vil to come to the conclusion she was slacking off with Jade even though the bags around her eyes were very much proof.
As she sat at the edge of the dock admiring the stars the waves hitting the edge of the pier calmed her head. It was nice to say the least.
She wondered what Jade would have to talk about. She looked at her phone and saw it was 10:05, Jade being late was a surprise, hopefully if she waited a bit longer her worry would ease. That atmosphere could not have lasted any longer.
A slight wind blew and during that exact moment something pulled her under by her feet into the cold ocean waters below. She managed to hold her breath and open her eyes to see nothing but darkness even with the moon behind the clouds right about now only endless shadows were there.
She could barely hear but she could have sworn something swam by her. Arms touched her waist which almost made her scream for a moment though that was something suicidal. It touch the sides of her stomach and stayed there for a moment.
Even though she tried to struggle it was fruitless when the thing that held her tickled her sides making her open her mouth and succumb to breathing in water then choking soon after. That wasn't the only thing to occur since the next second lips were on hers and a fluid trickled down her throat along with the water that she was trying to swallow. The tongue of said thing dipped inside her mouth and would have made her gag if they hadn't pulled away.
She regretted it the moment they did cause she still could breath and with her mouth open she thought she would take her final breath. Both or what she assumes were two people backed off letting her go to meet her demise with her slowly closing her eyes. She didn't notice the glow of what transpired around her lower half of her body. She could finally take in some much needed breaths except her neck for some reason felt sore and she could no longer move her legs separately to try and swim up for air.
Looking down she saw the horrid image of a long tail with a fin on the end where her legs were supposed to be. The pain form her neck was from three newly formed slits on either side of her neck. Her fingers traced over them finding this whole situation unbelievable. When she finally came to her senses she found herself hearing voices as well.
"Shrimpy's still here! It worked, Jade!" A cheerful voice could be heard in the cold waters that surrounded her.
Something slimy wrapped about her new found lower half. Pulling her closer to be within someone's arms. They held her a bit too tight like all the air, water in her lungs could have been? Did she still even have those anymore she wondered? Even still the amount of pressure put on her by the creature hugging her was able to be felt.
He was laughing happily spinning around in circles with the former human female getting dizzy by the second.
"I can see that Floyd. How wonderful, but do take it down a notch she only was just turned after all." That voice was all too familiar. She couldn't help but say it aloud, but that couldn't be true.
"Jade?" Her voice was a whisper but of course he still heard it.
"Yes, my dear angelfish what is it?" He responded in an endearing tone that was calm despite the situation she was just put through.
She glanced toward the voice to see what appeared to be a creature similar to that of an eel by the tail. Her eyes trailed up to the sight of his face. It was him no doubt about it. The eyes were exact and so was the hair the only difference was the body and skin.
"Aw Shrimpy why'd you acknowledge him first? I'm here too." A voice whined in a more child like tone directly in her ear. It brought a shiver down her spine.
'Shrimpy?' That was unmistakably the nickname Jade gave her when he acted weird.
She turned toward his way and saw a sharp toothed grin on his face when she looked at him.
"Floyd you haven't even introduced yourself." Jade sounded like his normal self and this Floyd person was just the complete opposite of him.
"Oh right Shrimpy I'm Floyd, Jade's brother and your going to be with us in the sea from now on! Isn't that great? I can't wait to show you all my favorite places you'll love it!" He sounded so excited while dread built up in the mermaid.
"What do you mean stay here?! What have you done to me? Who, what even are you two?!" She said those words with malice laced into them having them both chuckle in response.
Jade had also wrapped his tail about her upper half restraining her further. He brought himself closer to her face, a smirk etched on to it.
"My, my, Y/n you did say you wanted to spend more time with me, isn't this what you wanted?" He tilted her chin up showing a sadistic smile on his face that only built up even more dread than what his brother had already.
"I didn't realize or expected anything like this and you know that! Why would you do this?! You! You-" She thought for a second processing all that had occurred the past couple of weeks.
"You killed them you gave them that exlixir that ended their lives. Every single one of them." This time it was the other brother's turn to speak.
"There's our little dectective she's so smart!~" Floyd just made her completely uncomfortable with how he would call her that nickname and whisper words in her ear.
"Why? Why would you do this?" She became defeated knowing turf like this was theirs and she stood no chance against them in the first place.
"Eh why? Is Shrimpy really that blind Jade?" Floyd mocked her with no remorse as tears streamed down the dectective's eyes at the thought of letting so many people down.
"Why? My dear angelfish haven't you noticed? We've become quite enamored with you. Hm no better word to put it is obsessed, at first it was just me but with Floyd's impatience I just had to get him in on understanding why we didn't go back home already. As for those people they were necessary for testing the elixir for this very moment. We couldn't have you dying on us afterall." He said with absolute calmness evoking rage within the mermaid.
She clenched her fists.
"So many were sacrificed, I should've died, instead." She murmured the last half but both the twin eels heard it.
There expressions turned dark and their tails gripped the female tighter startling her from her state of guilt.
"Eh, why would you say that Shrimpy, we can't have you leaving us. We finally got you all to ourselves and I haven't had much time with you, and yet you say you want to leave." Floyd's arms contracted her more than Jade's tail already, now she understood what it must have felt like for Trappola.
"He is right Y/n dear, we only want what's best for you and having you say that only makes our blood boil so please understand." Jade gripped her chin with a scary amount of strength. This was the first time he ever seemed so much more intimidating to her.
"Don't ever say something like that again am I clear?"
From that point on she was stuck between the twin eels who loved her so. She only wished she could have been able to listen to Sebek when he said the truth. Mr. Leech did do it just not the one she thought.

intrigueâchapter 1017 spoilers
Okay, we all know the most important frame of the whole chapter is the one below.
Odaâs really kinda giving everyone a little bit of time in the sun or submersible. Though Iâm not sure who the guy on the right is (like, I donât have a nickname for him). But Ikkaku and Jean Bart have been featuring quite prominently in the few frames afforded the Hearts (and weâve been seeing a fair-ish bit of Bepo and co in the fighting as well).
I was hoping to see how they actually rescued him, cos subs can do repairs and all underwater, but itâs quite a process from what Iâve read, I think. Plus, it would really depend on how far below you were.Â
Guessing Luff hadnât sunk that deep, BUT thatâs where Ikkaku shifts into Narwhal form, cos those whales can really dive! Fingers crossed thereâs anime filler. Whatâs Luff got in his hand, btw? If anything.
Iâm gonna pop in the link to my meta about the Polar Tang and this arc, because I think itâs relevant.Â
And next. Shinobu might not like sharp things, but sheâs got no fear of heights. Maybe sharp things deflate mature things? I wonder what the story is, considering she was pretty adept at sharp things in the flashback.
Itâs understandable that heights freak Momo out. Heâs been dangled over them at high stress moments a number of times. And heâs still only eight. The mourning is understandable. Iâd imagine heâd be super-conflicted over Kanjuro too, considering the time he, Kinâemon and Kanjuro had spent together.
Then, things arenât going quite right for CP0, and the reveal that Whoâs-Who is ex-CP9, and CP0 must have known if Jinbe/Jinbei knows, is really interesting. As is the shout out to Rob Lucci. We last saw him at the Reverie. I can imagine the predictions and theories are going wild.
But before we get to Whoâs-Who, letâs check out these two:
Queen in Cyborg form. The fic of Queen, Franky and Kid hanging out needs to be written. Kidâs not cyborg, but he does have a cool arm. AND what is MADS. MADS became SADS? Ah, Sanji, what secrets are you holding up your non-electronic sleeve?
It doesnât seem to pop up on the wiki, but I didnât pay really close attention to Germa, so if anyone has the info, drop a reply and let me know please. It might be a translation thing, as these are scans, but Iâm assuming it was an acronym in Roman letters.
Donât get MAD, get SAD, and then you SMILE, or something like that? Anyhoo.
Was there ever anyone more Little Mermaid than Zoro, and I mean the Hans Christen Andersen version, not Disney?
But First! Chopper as Baby Gramps! Like, is the corny speech pattern part of that? Iâm figuring so.
Second, thereâs Zoro walking and each step feeling like knives (glass I thought), so long as he can shed his mer-tail, walk on two legs, and be in the presence of his prince (who doesnât love him). I mean, thatâs the Little Mermaid.Â
God that was a sad story. I just reread the wiki, and she lost her voice following her desire to be with the prince (part of a sea-witch potion), and the prince also never realised that it was her who saved him when he fell from his ship, but he was in love with whoever he thought had. I guess mermaids of this era might not have been able to write. But anyway, Zoroâs role, like Christ on the cross it seems (fitting that heâs still in crucifixion pose), is to take on the pain of others. Except, unlike Christ (but like the Little Mermaid), they never know it. Of course, lots of philosophies have similar stories, ideas and models but, just as Oda has designated it so that Law gets beaten up and chained on a fairly regular basis (second being Sanji, perhaps), Zoro just takes on the pain of others as if it was a very requirement of his very Bushido nature. Heh.
Little Mermaid from the wiki:Â
she will obtain a soul only if she wins the love of the prince and marries him, for then a part of his soul will flow into her. Otherwise, at dawn on the first day after he marries someone else, the Little Mermaid will die with a broken heart and dissolve into sea foam upon the waves.
LawLu shippers, you canât do that to Zoro. Anyway, the mermaid does die, by suicide once the prince marries someone else (she had the option to murder him to keep her life), but kinda becomes an ethereal spirit, and Zoroâs gonna have a better life than that, and has had so far, I think. Maybe.Â
The Little Mermaid dances because sheâs good, the prince likes it, but he doesnât realise itâs like stepping on knives for her with every step. Literally. That sea witch and her potion, man.
Back to Zoro, Iâm guessing his actions fit into the âHeroic Courageâ aspect of the eight virtues of Bushido (just relying on Wikipedia here). And Zoroâs right. At this point, if he could not fight, his particular role and purpose and perception of self would need some serious reassessment.
But weâre in for some angst, and angst fics once the battle is over, for sure. Considering the encounter with the bible-wielding Bartholomew Kuma almost killed him, and that it was only through taking on Luffyâs pain at that time that Luffy could continue. So. Broship and all to the fore. Iâve got a feeling his missing eye, or the story behind it, is gonna have a role to play soonish.
Tamaâs way of fighting also needs a special Bao Huang broadcast just here. Heroism comes in all shapes. Look at how many people sheâs manipulating. King, or queen, and definitely awesome.
And, finallyâ
Whoâs-Who is ex-CP9 and it seems he was imprisoned due to not properly guarding the gomu gomu no mi. Shanks and co had that, so yeah, full circles and new things to ponder.

Part 3 to Notebook!
Summary: Draco Lucius Malfoy. His thoughts and the sound of his name.
Pairing: Draco Malfoy x Gryffindor!Reader
A/N: This newbie of a writer is thankful for your support! Iâm trying to experiment with my style a little bit more, but I hope this chapter suffices. The goal was to be a little bit more show than tell, but Iâm still working on it! :)
Anyone who passed by Draco in the library mightâve thought there was something wrong with him, because at this point the boy had spent nearly thirty minutes reminiscing the memory, staring at the ceiling all while remaining fixed to the seat you were in previously. Ever since that very moment, he made an effort in pushing thoughts of you away. He very much preferred to control how much impact you had on him by keeping the interactions minimal and straight to the point. Thankfully for him you made that easy, for you only spoke to him when needed. It was so easy that it bothered him at the same time, leaving him in a constant tug-of-war state between his mind and heart. Before allowing himself to be consumed with frustration any further, Draco took a stand to leave the room and mindlessly walked about, so that he could clear his mind.
As soon as he stepped out of the library, he immediately took note of how quickly the night was drawing in. His feet took him through various corridors, making the route to the Great Hall purposefully long in hopes that he wouldnât see you. The sight of you would only serve as a catalyst to plunge him deeper into his emotions. He broke out of thought when his ears began to fill with the loud chatters of students occupying the hall. He was greeted with the familiar warm lighting and savory aromas from the dinner that was being served tonight. As he scanned the Slytherin table for his group friends, his focus landed on you. Of course the Gryffindors had to be seated next to his house. In addition to that, he couldnât help but notice how cheerful you were around your friends. Your eyes were focused on the two girls sitting across from you as you held your fork midway, about to place the food in your mouth until you started laughing at something either Hermione or Ginny said. The warmth of the lighting in the room made your features illuminate even more. He smiled inwardly, but was pulled away from your laughter when Pansy called him over.
âDraco! What are you doing standing there? Come here!â The girl beckoned him to join her and his group of friends, to which he obliged. Before he took his seat, he focused his vision to where you are, seeing that a wide smile was still plastered on your face. You and your friends had your attention on Ron as he and Hermione jokingly argued with one another. Your eyes glittered and it seemed like you tried to prevent yourself from laughing. Failing at that, another giggle escaped your lips and your group followed. The scene only lasted for a couple of seconds, but Draco couldnât deny the envy he felt for your circle.Â
âYou okay, mate? You stood at the entrance of the hall for three solid minutes.â Blaise asked. âYouâve been acting weird since potions. Whatâs going on, Dray?â Draco reached for a sausage and placed it on his plate.
âNothingâs going on. No need for you to concern yourself.â He replied nonchalantly. The truth was that Draco was far from normal. The platinum-haired boy was usually vibrant around this time of day. His dinner time typically consisted of conversations about their days, which were often laced with several insults and obnoxious laughter. But, tonight he was wrapped in scenarios of you and him in his mind. When he tied the moment you shared in potions to the groundbreaking sensation of your first interaction together, he couldnât help but allow those thoughts to fill him. The pull that he felt towards you was strong, and he wanted more. âBut how?âÂ
Breaking his thoughts, Blaise interjected once again, âYou looking rather sickly, mate.â This time, his group chimed their concerns as well.
âIâm fine! Whatâs up with you all getting up in my business?â Draco said coldly. He didnât intend to. He even felt a little bad as he started to fumble with the sad piece of sausage that sat lonely on his plate. He felt eyes on him as he reached out to add some potatoes to his meal. An awkward silence lingered in the air until Goyle cleared his throat.
âSo, Crabbe, howâs your face feeling?â Recalling the incident at potions, Draco burst in laughter to which Blaise and the rest of the group followed.Â
âSeriously ridiculous, Crabbe! Iâve never seen anyone mix up so many ingredients in my life. How brilliant!â The weight of his emotions slightly lifted from his shoulders, so he took an opportunity to steal a glance at you. Eye contact was made for a good two seconds before you looked back to your friends with a small smile plastered on your face. Feeling like his normal self again, he found himself engaged in conversation with his friends.
âHey, so a trip to Hogsmeade is scheduled for this weekend. Are you guys planning to go?â Pansy asked. The air was much more lively now.
âDown for a round of butterbeers? This week has been a monster.â Everyone was in agreement to the suggestion, but Dracoâs thoughts once again drifted to you. He imagined what it would be like to go on a date with you. He subconsciously slapped himself hard, which drew back the attention on him.
âMerlin, you are acting so weird today. First, you look like youâve seen a ghost, and then youâre cold. You seem to have pulled yourself out of your rut, but here you are slapping yourself.â Blaise listed the number of observations much to Dracoâs embarrassment.
âWith all those observations, I am beginning to assume that youâve got a crush on me. Is that so, Zabini?â He smirked, earning a punch in return. Blaise, on the other hand, began to piece the fragments of info together. After all, thereâs never been a night where the platinum blonde was silent. His usual arrogance was at a low today. His emotions constantly fluctuated throughout the time he was there. There mustâve been something or someone who knocked him over real bad for him to act that way. He couldnât believe it at first, but he didnât deny the possibility of Draco actually having feelings for someone.
âWait a second. Does Malfoy have a crush on someone???â Blaise asked a little too loud. Draco choked on his food in response, and started glaring.
With shock of the lack of his friendâs response, he exclaimed, âNo way! You do!â
âD-Do not! Youâre an idiot for thinking up of something so stupid!â He defended. He never stutters, yet he stuttered within that one second, causing his friends to peak more interest. Curiosity loomed through the minds of those around him before the boy was bombarded with questions. Draco tried his best to contain his blush, but his ears grew warm and red, revealing himself even more. His image was dissolving at a fast rate and he grew desperate to prevent it from getting worse. He made sure to kill Blaise when they got to the common room.Â
âWho is it!? I must know!â Pansy said, extending the âmustâ in her statement. Draco had enough. The frustration that he wanted to avoid had erupted in response to the invasion of privacy that he felt.
âYou donât have to know, and itâs absolutely no one!â He finally exclaimed as he stood up to leave the hall. While he approached the exit, he locked eyes with you again. Concern filled them as they followed his figure into the night. You took a look at his friends who were left dumbfounded at the Slytherin table. Although you werenât involved in the altercation, you felt the awkward tension from where you were, so you started fumbling with the leftovers that occupied your plate to mentally excuse yourself. Your friends paid no attention to the events that occurred, but it ate away at you and only left you in your thoughts. The only thing that distracted you at this point were the cookies that have been served for dessert. Remembering the first time you met the boy, you took one and wrapped it carefully with a spare handkerchief you kept in the pockets of your robe. After storing the delicacy, you took a stand and bid your friends goodnight not long after Draco had left, and started your way to the Gryffindor tower.
The cold breeze hit your face as you remembered the events from today. You remembered the countless moments where you felt your heart pound against your chest. You recalled the intensity of the eye contact that was made during potions. The silent affection that was shared between the both of you through the form smiles and glittering eyes. You remembered the shock that overcame you when Draco met you in the library, which soon turned to embarrassment due to your messiness, only to be further replaced with admiration for his small act of kindness. You took a break from walking and fished out the familiar green notebook. The mere sight of it made your heart beat a little faster just as it did when he placed it amongst your belongings. You didnât hesitate to take in the bits of details that were characteristic to him as you resumed your route to the common room. If you were being honest with yourself, you were doubtful of a chance to actually examine it once you got there. House rivalries prevailed, and anything that was associated with Slytherin was strictly looked down upon.
âHow patheticâ you thought as you approached a corner.Â
Without a second to spare, you shifted your mind to the cover. His name was already embedded on it, but when you flipped to the very first page, you saw that his name was written on there as well. However, it was not quite the same. It was written in a slightly different fashion that conjured butterflies within you.
You looked around to see if anyone was around before you read his full name aloud.
âDraco Lucius Malfoyâ Admiring the sound of his name from your lips, you repeated it several times--each time reeling in memories of the brief encounters you had with him. You couldnât help but smile to yourself.
âWhat a handsome name--Draco Lucius MalfoyâŚ.â You closed your eyes and envisioned him before saying it again.
âDraco LuciusâŚâ His face appeared in your mind once again. That boy with the platinum-blonde hair, sleek attire, and lean stature, with the silver eyes and pale skin, with a voice that was alarmingly silky and alluring--the name that belonged to that boy was...
âDraco...Lucius...Malfoy.â You say once more with adoration. Although the sound of it was pleasant to your ears, the moment you had to yourself came to a crashing halt.
âYou might wear it out if you keep saying it, sweetheart.â You felt bricks--mental bricks--falling down on you. If your heart rate wasnât sped up fast enough, it increased even more. Your senses were livid at the sound of the voice you wish didnât belong to Draco, but it was definitely his voice. With eyes wide, breathing heavy, you turned around frantically to be met with the devil himself. You were stunned with the way the moonlight caressed his features when he came out of the darkness. He was incredibly handsome, and you couldnât let out a noise. Your e/c eyes scanned him, but ended up becoming fixed to his piercing silver hues. He took a step towards you with a smirk gracing his lips. Before he could come even closer, you turned to walk away as swiftly as you possibly can. You stopped a bit after hearing your name being called out.
âY/N!â You turned around to look at him. His smile had widened, and his hands were shoved in his suit pockets. You waited expectantly, curious about the words that he was going to use next. You could imagine him teasing you to no end with this encounter. What came out of his mouth, however, shocked you to your core.
âI-I like the way you say my name!â You didnât have a response for him. Instead, you clutched his notebook tighter to your chest, and ran as quick as you can. Your heart was racing and your face was hot. Yet you knew that your feelings had deepened.
Once you arrived to your dorm, you were literally and figuratively breathless. You stashed your bag on the side of your desk, and threw yourself onto your bed. As your hold on the object loosened, a smile of disbelief filled your expression.Â
âWhat a dayâ
A/N: Once again, feedback is very much appreciated! Thank you so much, and I hope you enjoyed!

BEST FRIEND!JAKE GYLLENHAAL HEADCANONS
notes: jake and you are bffs, thatâs it, thatâs the tweet! warnings: some mentions of sexual content, but itâs pretty clean and safe otherwise! the gifs were in a gif hunt so i donât know who made them unfortunately! i suggest you listen to tongue tied by grouplove or dog days are over by florence + the machine! i hope you guys enjoy! <3
Your friendship happened so out of the blue. You were at the grocery store with a friend and you picked some product up, reading the informations about it. You exclaimed âthis comes from Canadaâ, you know, as one does while realizing Canada is a real country and not just a fantasy where everyone lives in igloos and chop wood and like wish Justin Trudeau good night. Your friend shrugged, very bored, but you heard a voice behind you. âActually, I have some cool theory about Canada. Do you know the Ryans? Gosling and Reynolds? Well...â
âCanada had sex with America and they made the two of them and theyâre twins and they tried to eat each other in the womb, but they didnât, they survived...â You both spoke in sync. You turned around, only to realize that Jake Gyllenhaal was the one radiating even more chaotic energy than you.
It was signed, sealed and delivered.
You two were painful to be around. You would go on some random conspiracy theories of your own creation (you know Strawberry Shortcakes, like the toys and the shows for kids? Well theyâre just Bratz dolls except for Bratz dolls, somebody confused the sugar with the salt and they ended up without feet and with some very large heads). You would argue about everything and nothing.
It was a 0 to 100 real quick.
You could be watching a movie at the cinema with a few friends, staying silent the whole time until you got back in the car and you just exploded with thoughts about the movie. You two were screaming so loud the driver of the car had to pull by the side of the road to try and keep you quiet like two angry children.
Thatâs what you two were: two very annoying children.
In Jakeâs and yours opinion, you never argued. You just shared thoughts with a strong passion.
You could call each other names, but you never meant the insults you were saying.
âYou can go suck a fuckâ, âTell me Y/N, how exactly does one suck a fuck? Iâm all yearsâ
Laughter. You guys laughed all the time together. No, wait, you laughed and Jake just wheezed. You took him to see a doctor once, you managed to convince him he might have a condition because no one ever wheezes THAT MUCH but it turns out you just both suffered from a great sense of humour.
For the first couple of months, your friendship was so filled with arguments and chaos that your mutuals thought you two actually hated each other.
But it could not be more wrong.
Jake and you were inseparable. Youâd do everything and nothing together. Youâd stop at the convenience store, share the newspaper, have a karaoke night (you were two Britney Spears stans), buy gifts for your respective relatives (you suspected that your own mother preferred your friend Jake to you). You spent the Holidays together. New Years, Valentineâs Day, even Halloween. You would host Halloween parties at your house. There would be only the two of you wearing matching costumes you made with clothes and craft supplies around the house. You both looked horrible, but you ate way too many candies to realize it.
You were attached by the hip. Wherever Jake went, you were there too.
At some point, you lost your job. It happens to the best of us. So Jake suggested youâd become his assistant.
In theory, it was a beautiful idea. You knew Jakeâs schedule by heart and did everything together. Being paid for it? Sign me up.
But in practice...
It created some sort of tension between the two of you. It was one more reason to depend on Jake, and for Jake to depend on you. You were two peas in a pod but you had to manage the new pressure.
During red carpets you were hiding behind the interviewer or by his sides, taping your wrist to remind him to go faster and cut the long analytical speeches nobody really cared about. Except for you, you loved how insightful he was and how he rarely showed this side of his personality.
He knew when you were tired to just sit and watch the same people win awards for similar roles they did in other movies before.
Jake would lean in and say âActually, I think Meryl Streep is a wizard, like the nice type, and she hides magical potions in her purse that can make you fly and donât even get me started on Julia Roberts...â. You were too far gone, laughing so loud during an emotional speech when a not very talented celebrity won over very talented celebrities that deserved it more or during a movie premiere.
You would hold hands. For funsies.
Heâd give you his jacket. Heâd feed you a spoon of his food at the restaurant. Youâd give him a sip of your hot chocolate on a cold winter evening. Youâd share your comfy slippers with him even if his feet were too big and barely fit in.
Life without Jake? You simply did not remember what it was like.
Your mutual friends stopped calling you two enemies. You were straight up a married couple.
Youâd go grocery shopping together and Jake would push the caddy around while you guide him through the aisles. âCould make you this dish, I know you like itâ heâd suggest. âThe oreos are on sale? Must get six packs of them, double stuff onlyâ youâd add.
Youâd go on car rides. They lead nowhere: a dead end street, a bridge under construction, a small ghost town. You both just sat there and listened to music.
His hand would mysteriously fall on your thigh and just stay there the whole way back.
And youâd give each other shy looks.
And giggle. And chuckle. And drop your keys by the front door, oopsies you were all of a sudden clumsy.
And when the door was closed behind you, you stared into each otherâs eyes and just shrugged before ripping each otherâs clothes at the speed of light and fucking on the couch, on the kitchen table or even on the floor. The bed was too far away.
You both had seen each other naked so many times it was not intimidating. You knew he was handsome, he knew you were beautiful. That was all you guys needed to know. But there were new infos to take in consideration: in bed, you two were just powerful. So you slept together again.
Again and again and again...
It did not bother any of you. Your friends did not even find out about it. Everything was fine.
Everything was fine until you went on a date with someone else. Two times, three times... It was starting to get serious.
Jake felt so weird. He hid it from you.
He caressed your hair when you cried as your new fling just broke up with you over text messages. He fed you your favourite ice cream while you two cuddled on the couch, trying to heal the pain with a wholesome Disney movie. He helped you get in the shower when you were too sad or too tired. He supported you.
He cared for you.
He loved you.
And he told you.
That one time he helped you get in the bathtub after you insisted you could go to the gym with him and he literally crushed you not even five minutes in. You were sore and tired and you thought you hallucinated when you heard the words: I love you.
He thought he was having a fever dream when you replied: I love you too.

Wulfgard: The Hunt Never Ends Preview - Story 6, âTroubled Watersâ

Interior illustration from The Hunt Never Ends story, âTroubled Watersâ
Weâre almost there - the book releases one week from today!
I am a very special kind of stressed, lemme tell you.
This preview is of the final story in the story collection and my personal favorite: âTroubled Waters.â If you didnât know, this is a preview for my upcoming story collection, Wulfgard: The Hunt Never Ends. Itâs a book, but itâs something in-between a novel and a short story collection.
Each story in the book is individual and stands on its own, but they also go in order and build upon each other. So Iâm not sure if one should really call it a novel, but itâs also different than just unrelated short stories. It bridges the gap between the two mediums.
Anyway, hereâs another preview - enjoy!
For more info on the book itself, you can also check out this post. Also be sure to check out the Hunt Never Ends tag for a whole lot more book previews!
And remember - Wulfgard: The Hunt Never Ends is available for preorder (digital only; physical available on release date) on Amazon.com!
Pre-Order Link

------------
There were a lot of things Caiden knew how to do. Clean a sword. Maintain a bow or a crossbow, even customize the latter almost beyond recognition. Make his own arrows or bolts. Investigate a crime scene. Bandage a wound, make a tourniquet, brew a potion, hunt, forage, track, forge his own tools or weapons, carve wood, build houses or fortifications, command an army, cook mealsâŚ
But one thing he didnât know how to do was read. And it pissed him off.
The beds in Castle Greywatch werenât much. Some straw, changed daily, for a mattress, and some sackcloth to cover it. Any Venatori better off liked to buy their own beds, but Caiden wasnât exactly drowning in coin. Following the dullahan encounter on Samhain, Kiya had given him a feather pillow as thanks â he didnât want to think it had belonged to Relgar, but it probably had â and that was the nicest part of his sleeping arrangement in the castle.
He shifted his back against that pillow, currently squashed between him and the shoddy headboard and struggling to retain any fluffiness as a result. He tried to focus. Focus, he tended to be good at, but staring at the book in his hand almost made him wonder. It was a much smaller bestiary than the one Gwen had been given by Illikon, with a likewise smaller amount of illustrations.
If he had any sense, he would have just asked Gwen for help with reading. But his dignity â or maybe his stubbornness, or both â had long since thrown that idea out. He had all day to struggle with this, unless something came up. So, he reached to the nightstand beside him for the bottle of whiskey there. If there was something Castle Greywatch did have, it was decent booze.
Not that it seemed to be helping right now. It made things a little fuzzier, maybe. Slightly dulled that deep, gnawing, empty pain inside him, but not enough.
After they left Illikon, that feeling had grown louder, rowdier â tried to make itself more known. Whatever it was found claws to dig into his spine, using them to reach his skull. There, it chewed into him, left seeds of growing frustration â restless anger he couldnât seem to muzzle. Any unwanted feelings of loneliness, of being lost, only got worse. A pulling, a need, telling him to do something.
After a few nights spent at Greywatch, it had grown to take a shape he almost recognized: hunger. Impossibly deep hunger that absolutely nothing satisfied.
That was why he couldnât think. Not the drink. Not the page in front of him, covered in small symbols supposedly forming words, all of which made no sense. It was the smoldering flame in him turning into an empty inferno, and he had no idea how to put it out â or how to give it more fuel to burn.
Caidenâs eyes lost focus on the bestiary, staring at something inside rather than out. He pinched the bridge of his nose with his free hand, his grip on the book loosening, letting it droop.
Some tentative excitement came creeping up the stairs just outside the room. Caiden snapped the book shut and shoved it under his pillow, folding his arms and feeling an awful lot like a five-year-old trying to hide something embarrassing.
Except the bottle of whiskey. Couldnât really hide that. Not like it mattered, anyway; she already knew it.
Gwen rounded the corner, peering into the room past the partially ajar door. She gave a few tentative knocks, eyes on him.
Caiden grunted. Yeah. Come in. You already have.
When she stepped into the room, Caiden instantly noted she was fully suited up, wearing her leather jerkin, belt of potions, weapons⌠Which for her, unlike him, was unusual to see when they were around the castle. Something was up.
Gwen paused, looked at him, followed his gaze to the far wall obviously in search of something interesting there, then at him again.
He met her stare evenly. âWhat?â
She shot the whiskey bottle a glance. âItâs a little early to be drinking, isnât it?â
Caiden shrugged. Did that actually matter right now?
âSure⌠Okay.â Cool worry filled the room, emanating from her, lapping jittery and mildly annoying waves against him. Gwen fumbled with a letter sheâd been holding halfway behind her back. âWell, everyone in the great hall was talking missions, and a new one just came in. I snatched it up â thought it might be interesting. Itâs not really like anything weâve done beforeâŚâ
An unnatural urge to snap at her, tell her to get on with it, rose in his throat and forced him to swallow it. Barely. It settled in his stomach, uncomfortable and heavy, and he tried to tell himself not to be a half-drunk asshole.
âWhat is it?â he prompted, voice coming out too flat as he struggled to find his usual patience.
That made Gwen screw up her brow at him more than a little, but she said, âThereâs a village in the mountains not far from here â secluded little place called Norhaven. It doesnât seem very noteworthy, except it has its own freshwater spring coming out of a mountain. But now a monsterâs attacking them over the water, or thatâs what theyâre claiming. They say itâs been burning people, of all things, and it only attacks in the dark.â
For half a second, Caidenâs mind stuttered and ground to a halt. The first time he met something that only attacked in the dark, it had been his first monster hunt. It wasnât something he liked recalling.
But he nodded.
âThey⌠want us there as soon as possible,â Gwen added, almost tentatively. No, not almost. Definitely. Her nerves were frayed. She was worried about something, and it only seemed to get worse the longer she looked at him.
Caiden didnât much like people worrying about him. He never had.
So he huffed, trying to figure out how to give what she might consider a ânormalâ response. He stood and popped his neck in a short shock of painful relief. Even if it didnât help the pinching headache heâd gotten from being bent over a book and trying to read for so long, it felt slightly better.
âMaybe we should wait until tomorrow morning,â said Gwen, still eying him like he was sick.
He eyed her right back. âIâm fine.â
âCaiden, youâve drunk way more than usual lately â and thatâs already saying something â and way earlier in the day. You know how terrible that is for you, right? And besides that, youâre talking even less.â
Gwen frowned. Some kind of hurt came off her then, enough to make his insides almost start to shrivel.
âYou can trust me,â she said at length. âIf somethingâs wrong, talk to me about it. Wouldnât you be the first one to tell me that you need to know if I have something going on, so it doesnât jeopardize our mission?â
Caidenâs jaw tightened, hard, before he gave it permission. You know sheâs right. Yeah, she was right, and he couldnât tell her. Every word, every phrase that came to mind sounded dismissive. Uncaring, or at least untrusting.
But Gwen gave up fairly quickly, still wearing a frown. She nodded and said, âOkay. Want to leave in an hour or two? It isnât far to ride. Weâll get there before sundown and we can find a place to sleep.â
Caiden nodded. âSounds good. Iâll meet you by the stables.â
With that, Gwen turned and left â though not without throwing a quick, and decidedly worried, look back at him over her shoulder.
(More preview under the cut!)
------------
âThese attacks,â said Gwen, âdo they usually happen around the spring, under the trees?â
Asger nodded. âMostly.â
âAnd has anyone been in that cave since it started?â
âWhere the source is? Gods, no. Gotta have a deathwish to walk into the dark after this thing.â
âYeah,â Caiden said, already walking around the trees and toward the cave. Behind him, Asger sputtered, while Gwenâs quiet footfalls and building, anxious excitement followed in his wake.
âGo on back to town and get some rest, Asger,â Gwen called back to him.
Caiden stopped before the mouth of the cave and squinted into it, reaching for a potion on his belt: one to enhance his senses. Beside him now, Gwen shifted, tension radiating from her like constant lightning.
âIf you drink that and that thing burns you, itâll really hurt,â she said. âI heard some Venatori pass out from pain if something catches them with one of those.â
Caiden huffed. âI didnât last time. I wonât this time either.â
Just as he drained the potion bottle, Asgerâs panting caught up with them again as he stopped by their side, drawing his bodkin dagger and holding it up in a shaking hand. Gwen blinked at him, and Caiden furrowed his brow.
Asgerâs face slowly drained of color as he stared at Caidenâs eyes â a side-effect of the potion was his eyes glowing. Not much, just softly, but it tended to scare the hell out of the average person.
âYou probably shouldnât come with us,â Gwen offered slowly, like she was trying to calm Asger down from some fit of panic. âEspecially since⌠your weapon there looks like something my partner might pick his teeth with.â
âThisâs a finely-made dagger, Iâll have you know,â Asger blurted. âAnd Iâm the watchman here, this is part of my job. Letâs go on thenââ
He stepped forward, but Caiden snapped one hand out and got a firm grip on Asgerâs arm, stopping him in his tracks.
âIâm on point,â he said. âYou shouldnât come, but if youâre following us, then stay behind me. GwenâŚâ
âOn it. Iâll cover your rearâ I mean, the rear.â A blush quickly rose in her cheeks. âTom ruined me,â Caiden faintly heard her mutter under her breath.
Caiden grunted. Then he turned and led the way.
Didnât take long for his eyes to adjust, then to adapt, thanks to that potion. Faint moonlight spilling in let him see limestone walls slick with condensation and a violently gushing spring, churning the water on the far end of the cavern at the base of the wall. Spitting it out straight into the reservoir, the flow of it turning gentle by the time it left the cave.
Heavy mist hung in the air here, maybe kicked up by the water. But something didnât seem right.
Then he realized why.
Fear washed down upon them like frigid rain â so much fear that, for half a second, it froze every muscle in Caidenâs body. His nerves pulled taut, ready to break and snap down on him like a whip, hard enough to leave a few more scars on his back. Hand shooting to his sword hilt in a white-knuckle grip, he drew in a sharp breath and fought the chill that ran fast up his spine and forced him to be afraid.
This wasnât natural. Gwen, from the way she was suddenly fumbling with her gear, seemed to know it.
Asger, on the other hand, didnât. He bellowed out a hoarse shout, nearly fell spinning around to face the exit, and ran for the cave mouth.
All around them, a shrill voice echoed, âLeave this place!â
It spoke the words very clearly â not the gibberish heâd been told about.
Everything happened at once. A rush of air ripped by him, trailing cold in its wake, like off the surface of the spring itself. Asger screamed, his heavy boots scuffing the stone as something made him stumble and fall. Caiden charged forward at a surging shadow, blade ready to swing.
And an arrow lodged itself in his upper arm with a hard lance of pain and a meaty thunk.
Caiden coughed out a grunt and staggered from the impact, the arrow locking up his sword arm and stopping him mid-strike. Whatever had come past him and attacked Asger seemed already gone, moving faster than he could even understand.
Gwen appeared beside him in an instant, hand on his uninjured left arm and sputtering apologies. âCaiden!? I â godsâ I shouldnât have tried to shoot it, it moved so fastââ
The cave around him was far from silent. Asger swore as he scrambled to his feet, Gwen kept on apologizing as she tried in vain to tug Caiden out of the cave until he, halfway in a stupor, finally staggered along after her.
Boots against stone. Grass under their feet, bright moonlight overhead. Plenty of pain in his right arm that twitched useless and limp at his side.
These sensations stayed, but something was missing.
Heâd heard once that silence was golden. He had never understood what âsilenceâ entirely meant. This was the closest heâd ever come.
The whispers had stopped â the fleeting memories. All of it. The fear from the monster was gone â his, Asgerâs, Gwenâs â he felt no terror from anyone, though they still looked afraid. Sounded afraid. Moved like it. But he couldnât sense it. It didnât invade his mind, twist into him, and try to make itself at home.
And he suddenly felt blind. Deaf. Neither of those things, yet both at once â because it was gone. A sense he had known for his entire life, something that was always there. Gone, no trace left. He felt dumb.
Caiden blinked. Furrowed his brow. His shoulders tensed, pulled against the arrow still biting deep into his arm, and made him wince.
What the hell was going on?
In the corner of his vision, he saw Gwen fumble for something in a pouch on her belt, only to draw out the shattered neck of a bottle. She swore and threw it aside, turning her attention to him instead as he stared straight ahead at nothing in particular.
âCaiden â Caiden, hey, look at me!â Gwen grabbed the harness around his shoulders and tugged on it hard enough for his eyes to snap to her and stare. Her face was pale. âThat arrow was poisoned. Okay? Youâre probably woozy right now; itâs very fast-actingâŚâ
âGwenââ
She sucked in a hard breath and blurted, âCaiden if you say âIâm fineâ I swear to Athena I will punch you in the stomach.â
He paused and cocked his head at her, his mouth ever so slightly ajar.
âListen,â she said, voice quivering and straining to sound strong, âthe bottle for the antidote I had on me broke â I have more of it, but itâs in my saddlebag. We have to get you to the inn so we can get that arrow out and I can give you the antidote. Okay?â
âJust pull it out,â Caiden mumbled, his words coming out slurred.
âIâm not doing that, you donât just suddenly pull an arrow out â there are procedures for this!â
One sharp tug on his uninjured arm later, and he was following her back down the mountain path, both of them led by a stumbling Asger. The watchman looked at a deep welt on his forearm, his flesh twisted and reddened â what was left of it. Most of it had burned off entirely. Asger swore more colorfully than the average sailor, wearing a deep grimace.
He separated from them with a few hurried words to Gwen â words Caiden shouldâve heeded, but paid no attention to â and disappeared into a nearby home. Gwen kept leading the way, up the stairs and into the inn, still tugging on Caidenâs uninjured arm.
âBy Jove!â the innkeeper shouted, starting up in an instant from where heâd been sitting in his quiet tavern.
He quickly started throwing questions, which Gwen just as quickly deflected. She mostly did that by dumping a handful of coins on the counter and asking for two rooms. All the while, Caiden leaned his uninjured arm on the nearest table and pulled in one deep breath after another.
Pain quickly found its way across his body, tightening every muscle and settling heavily in his chest, like having molten lead poured into his lungs. It didnât leave him any room to breathe, and that didnât leave him much room to think.

A Foreigners Lament: Maxinora hails from a land where debts are paid, either in coin or with your head. Each month she is seen slipping from her apartment with a pouch full of coin, disappearing into the night only to return empty-handed.Â
Permanent Record: Nefarious people whoâve spent time in Tolâdagor may recognize the eldest Parkhurstâs face. Rumor around the mill says sheâs spent time in the Kulâtiran prison. Under what pretenses? It varies depending who you ask. Some say arson, others theft. A few say murder. Sheâs only spent a few years behind bars, though, and has since cleaned up her act- for the most part.Â
Shop Down the Lane: Parkhurst Alchemy: Potions for All Afflictions. The name has gained some infamy in the city. News of the alchemy shop tucked away in a far recess of the Mage Quarter maybe on the tongues of strangers and spoken into the ears of travelers. Their promise to concoct any potion, elixir, or tincture at discounted prices has brought them sudden popularity. Hardly anything is beyond the Parkhurst siblingsâ range of knowledge. Whatever they donât, they vow to figure out.Â
Burn Bright: Max finds it difficult to make ends come the last week of each month. To make up for it, she brawls in the back rooms of pubs under fixed terms. Some nights she walks away with deep pockets, and others all she takes home are broken bones and bruises. âAll in the name of love,â she tells herself, âSo long as heâs taken care thatâs all that matters.âÂ

Foreigner by Heart: As a young boy, Augustine infrequently traveled from home. Now in a new kingdom full of new people, he is simultaneously wonder struck and culture shocked. His inquisitive nature makes him exceptionally pestering and sometimes even offensive. He doesnât know better.
Prodigy Child: The youngest Parkhurst's mind is adaptable and sharp. He excelled in his lessons and surpassed many of his peers back home. It awarded him more enemies than friends and he learned to keep things simple for people; best to be believed dumb and liked than thought intelligent and hated.
The Alchemistâs Apprentice: Augustine never met his mother and barely knew his father. All heâs ever had was Max and his attachment to his sister is evident. He follows eagerly at her heels and looks to follow her lead into the study of alchemy. One of his many tasks as an apprentice is to make the morning deliveries to individuals who canât make it to the shop; heâs a frequent sight in the streets of the Cathedral, Mage, and Trade District.
Rising Tides: Augustine isnât blind to the struggles his sister faces. His desire to become fit and strong is palpable in his morning routine of jogging around the city after deliveries. While it isnât much, itâs something and he hopes to one day be strong enough to take some of the weight off of Maxâs shoulders.
OOC info âââ â
CONNECTIONS: The Parkhursts are an open book waiting to be read! Looking for clients, friends, enemies, past relations, you name it! Think your character has met Auggie or Max before? Feel free to DM and we can hash out the details! Iâm really hoping for some long-term, story driven interactions but Iâm also down for some casual, wholesome content too.Â
SCHEDULE: I am unpredictable when it comes to logging onto WoW, but you can always find me on Tumblr! I can give out my Discord and Btag upon request.Â
NOTES: Augustine and Max are typically written as a pair so it takes me a second to settle into a scene. If that bugs you, let me know and Iâll focus on one. Theyâre still relatively new and Iâm getting a feel for them and their personalities, so I apologize ahead of time if thereâs any inconsistencies!Â

Romania 1999 Pt 3 (Charlie Weasley x Female MC)
Summary: AU where MC is an American who attended the Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry instead of Hogwarts. Set eight years post graduation (1999) when she finally gets the nerve to travel abroad and follow her dream to be a Dragonologist in Romania. Check out my master list for parts 1 and 2.
Notes: So first of all, I suck and this is set eight years post graduation not nine. I for some reason had a stroke when I wrote part 1 and thought MC graduated in 1990 instead of 91. Oops. Also, I couldn't find any info on whether magical creatures can see Thestrals or what the rules are so what I wrote may not be accurate, but it worked for my plot line so idc lol.
Word Count: ~8000 (No, Iâm not kidding. Sorry not sorry đ
)
(Y/N) had started visiting the owlery nearly every morning the following week in hopes of hearing back from one of her friends. Finally on Wednesday, her heart leapt as she cracked open the door and saw Pearl, one of the Sanctuary's beautiful barn owls, with a letter addressed to (Y/N) clamped in her beak. She tore into the envelope as fast as her fingers would allow, leaning against the cool concrete ledge behind her as she began to read.
(Y/N),
I am so proud of you!! I can't believe you're actually in Romania. I don't know what gave you the final push to make the move, but I am SO glad you did. I think this will be great for you, especially considering it's the one job you've talked about since we were third years. How long do you plan on staying? I hope indefinitely- if anyone deserves a place to settle down it's you.
Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you. Things have been hectic since I took on this new teaching job. Can you believe I'm actually a potions professor? Professor Haywood does have a nice ring to it if I do say so myself. Don't worry though, I still have plenty of time for my shop on the weekends. Just let me know if you need any Felix Felicis to help you take on those crazy beasts you're working with. (Or perhaps a small vial of Amortentia if settling down is actually a possibility?? Only joking⌠sort of.) How's everything been at the Sanctuary so far?
I miss you so much and hope to hear back from you soon. Bea sends her love too!
Love, Penny
(Y/N) sighed as she finished reading, drawing the parchment against her chest. It was nice to know Penny was proud of her. The beautiful blonde had always known what she wanted to do and had her life as a Potioneer planned out since their very first day at Ilvermorny. (Y/N), on the other hand, had been interested in so many different careers in the wizarding world she struggled when it came to narrowing down her options and feeling confident with her decision. Funny how that ended up working in her favor with the way everything turned out...
(Y/N) shook her head clear, not wanting to think about that right now. Reaching out, she stroked Pearl affectionately, realizing this was her first encounter with a magical creature that wasn't a dragon in over two weeks. That was (Y/N)'s only complaint about working at the Sanctuary so far. She was well aware before she accepted the job that owls and Thestrals were the only other creatures permitted on the grounds, but it was an adjustment after having spent nearly two years bonding with all the different creatures back at the Reserve. (Y/N) frowned, feeling the ache in her chest grow, and decided she would have to write back to Penny later. Right now she needed a reminder of just how much she enjoyed being here at the Sanctuary, and maybe she could visit the Thestrals later.
Working alongside Charlie and Hank did just the trick at first. She had purposefully worked through the next two days to keep herself distracted, and it was working fine until now. (Y/N) stilled as Ventus bowed his head to her and flapped his green wings once, creating an all too vivid parallel in (Y/N)'s mind with her favorite Hippogriff back at the Reserve.
"Hello? Earth to (Y/N)?" Hank said, waving a hand in front of her face.
(Y/N) pinched the bridge of her nose in an attempt to ease the sudden pounding in her head. "Sorry, what'd you say?"
"I said I think Ventus here is growing quite fond of you."
(Y/N) forced a smile, admiring the dragon in front of her. "Yeah. Probably helps that he's the nicest one of the bunch." She felt Hank's inquisitive gaze linger on her for longer than she felt comfortable with, so she added, "We should probably get back down for dinner."
Both Charlie and Hank agreed, and the trio followed the path back to the village, joining Scott at their usual picnic table.
"Did you hear that the Wasps got owned by Puddlemere yesterday?" Scott asked as he piled his plate with a second helping of mashed potatoes.
Hank snorted. "No surprise there. I would'a bet twenty galleons on it with how rubbish Wimbourne has been this year." The forty-three year old who had already downed his dinner grabbed a piece of pie from the tray. "Hey Charlie, didn't you play with some bloke on Puddlemere's team?"
Charlie, who was seated beside (Y/N), nodded. "Oliver Wood. He became captain for Gryffindor after I left. Pretty good Keeper."
"Wait, isn't your friend Andre a Keeper too?" Scott asked.
"For Pride of Portree, yeah."
"Bloody hell," Hank said through a mouthful of pie, "and your sister may start playing for the Harpies? With all these connections, you better damn well get us tickets to the next World Cup."
The men carried on with the Quidditch conversation, but (Y/N) was distracted by the mention of Charlie's sister. So far she had only caught wind of a brother named Bill, and now an unnamed sister, presumably younger if she's just now joining the Harpies. Since (Y/N) didn't want to ask about anyone's family outright, she had resorted to making mental notes whenever something was mentioned. Hank had a sister named Chloe, but Scott had never mentioned family, only a friend named Steven.
"How's Andre doing?" Scott asked. "He should come visit again sometime."
"I haven't seen him in awhile actually. I'll probably send him an owl when I go home for Christmas."
(Y/N)'s stomach lurched at the thought of going home for the holidays. She hoped it wasn't uncommon for people to stay here around Christmastime.
"Awh man, you're going home this year?" Hank asked, disappointment etched on his face. "I was hoping Molly and Arthur were gonna come back here for a change. We haven't seen 'em since your siblings stayed at Hogwarts for the Triwizard Tournament."
Molly and Arthur, (Y/N) repeated in her head, adding who she presumed to be Charlie's parents to her mental list. She was surprised to find herself a little disappointed too. She would have liked to meet them.
"Seriously, that cake she made was the best I've ever had," Scott added, patting his stomach. "Plus it's always fun to get the scoop on Charles' childhood."
So his parents were still together and his mom was a great baker, maybe even a housewife since he apparently had so many siblings. From the sound of it, Charlie seemed to have a big, happy family. Of course he did.
"Are your parents gonna visit, (Y/N)?" Scott asked as he refilled his glass of Pumpkin Juice.
An anxious chill scattered across (Y/N)'s neck, traveling all the way down her back and legs. She hoped to God she didn't look as alarmed as she felt, and she shrugged in an attempt to ease some of the tension between her shoulders. "No, my parents and I aren't that close." She kept her tone casual, not wanting anyone to think it was a big deal. "But I'm sure my friends will sometime," she added for good measure. Even though her parents would never come here, Penny, Rowan, Barnaby or Jae might visit her someday.
"Don't you have any siblings that wanna come?" Hank asked, forking the last of his pie into his mouth.
(Y/N) stilled, feeling the color drain from her face. She shouldn't have been surprised. In all honesty, she was more surprised she had managed to make it this long without it coming up. For a split second, she considered lying- it's not like they would know the difference if she said she was an only child. But these guys were her friends, and she didn't want to lie to them.
Swallowing, (Y/N) looked down at her plate and scooped the last of her mashed potatoes onto her spoon. "Unfortunately my brother passed away several years ago."
"Oh shit," Hank said, his blue eyes going wide. "Sorry to hear that."
(Y/N) offered a smile, not wanting anyone to feel uncomfortable. That was always the worst part. "Don't worry about it. It was a long time ago."
Hank wiped his mouth with his napkin. "Were you two close?"
"About as close as your average siblings. We loved each other but did our fair share of arguing," (Y/N) said with a laugh. To her relief, Hank and Scott joined in laughing.
"Chloe and I used to torment each other all the time," Hank began before diving into a story of the best prank he ever pulled on his younger sister. (Y/N) let out a breath, grateful that they hadn't made a big deal of it. She was surprised, however, when she turned and found a certain dragon lover's gaze piercing right through her. Had Charlie been staring at her this whole time? Why was he looking at her like that?
(Y/N) kept her focus on Hank and Scott but could feel the redhead's eyes on her for the remainder of dinner. As Hank got to his feet, (Y/N) quickly followed, feeling oddly vulnerable. She desperately hoped her mentor wasn't about to start treating her differently- or worse, about to start asking questions.
"Anyone up for a game of Gobstones or Wizard Chess?" Scott asked, downing the last of his Pumpkin Juice. When his eyes flicked to (Y/N)'s, she shook her head.
"Sorry, but I'm actually going to fly for a bit before it gets too dark. I'll be up in the west wing if you guys need me."
Hank and Scott waved as (Y/N) went to retrieve one of the brooms from the storage shed by Aro. She made a point to not look at Charlie, not wanting to know if the confusing redhead was still staring at her like that.
As (Y/N) disappeared up the hill, Charlie reflexively glanced toward the west wing, the winding pathway and herds of workers just barely visible in the distance.
"Would you look at that," Hank said, stepping up beside him. "Yet another thing in common. You're running out of excuses, Weasley."
Charlie remained silent. He hated whenever Hank was right.
"That nagging voice in the back of your head asking if you should go talk to her?" Hank continued, crossing his arms over his chest. "Yeah, you should try listening to that for a change."
-
(Y/N) loved flying, but the real reason she was heading to the west wing was to see the Thestrals. The manufacturing team used them to pull carts and even flew on them occasionally since dragons couldn't see them.
As the creatures' resting spot came into view, (Y/N) lowered her broom handle, dismounting gracefully onto the secluded clearing. The area was easily one of the most beautiful and serene that (Y/N) had found at the Sanctuary so far. The sound of water from the creek greeted her ears, the steady stream leading into a dense forest ahead. Not many dragonologists seemed to approach the Thestrals when they were off duty. Whether it was because her coworkers couldn't see them or because of the bad omen myths about them, (Y/N) wasn't sure, but she was more than grateful for it.
Five Thestrals were there, two laying in the grass while the other three stood idly by, stomping their hooves and flapping their bat-like wings occasionally. (Y/N) didn't hesitate to approach the nearest one, watching closely for any sign of protest before stroking it's long, bony muzzle. The Thestral nuzzled his head against her hand, and that emptiness in (Y/N)'s chest vanished in an instant.
She stayed there for awhile, sitting in the grass and petting the creature, letting her mind wander to the Reserve for the first time since she'd been there.
"There you are."
(Y/N) whipped around, startled from her reverie and even more startled to see Charlie come into view, the matching Nimbus 2008 clutched in his right hand.
"Is everything okay?" she asked, assuming one of the dragons needed help for the redhead to come looking for her. "Norberta's wound didn't break open again, did it?"
"No, she's fine." He set the broom down beside hers and pushed his messy hair back away from his face. "Mind if I sit?"
(Y/N) blinked at him, wondering momentarily if she had fallen asleep and was dreaming- not that she had ever dreamed about dragon boy before. "Uh no, of course not."
He sat beside her, resting his forearms on his knees, and (Y/N) became far too aware of just how close he was. Sure, Charlie usually sat by her at the picnic table now ever since their trip to the pub, but it was a big table with plenty of room between the two. As (Y/N) stared down at the redhead's beat up jeans, she estimated less than seven inches between their legs.
"So why'd you come here?" Charlie asked, reaching forward and running a hand along the Thestral's back. "I could have sworn you'd be up on the landing. Took me awhile to spot you down here."
(Y/N) blinked again, her eyes following his hand before darting up to meet his curious gaze. He could see them. He could see the Thestrals. She bit the inside of her cheek hard, using all of her willpower to stay silent. She wanted to know more than anything, but how do you politely ask someone who they had seen die? You didn't.
"I like visiting the Thestrals," she admitted, glancing back to the creature resting on the ground. "Don't get me wrong, I love dragons, but it's an adjustment only seeing one type of creature everyday." (Y/N) frowned as the image of her Hippogriff returned to her mind. "I, uh, left a lot of creatures back in America."
"Oh. Do you miss home?"
A scoff fell from (Y/N)'s mouth before she could stop it. As far as she was concerned, home was wherever she was working, meaning the Sanctuary was her home now. She looked up at Charlie and wasn't sure why, but something in those big brown eyes made her confide in him. "This is my home now. Closest thing I've got to one anyway."
Unmistakable sadness flashed across Charlie's features. His eyes were fixed on the Thestral, but (Y/N) could tell his mind was elsewhere. "I lost one of my brothers too," he said quietly.
(Y/N)'s attention snapped back to Charlie and guilt swirled around in her stomach as she recalled her earlier assumption. A big, happy family. No wonder Charlie had been staring at her earlier. He may have had a bigger family, but it was broken just like hers.
"Oh." Her mind filled with questions, but (Y/N) knew the first one to ask. "What was his name?"
"Fred." He went quiet for a moment, and (Y/N) understood- she struggled saying her brother's name for an entire year after losing him. "Yours?"
"Jacob." She waited a minute before asking another question, not wanting to overwhelm him. "Was he older or younger?"
"Younger." The redhead rubbed his forehead with his palm before saying, "He and my brother George were twins. I can't even imagine what he's going through."
(Y/N)'s insides twisted, not only at the inconceivable thought of losing a twin, but also at Charlie's choice of words. I can't even imagine what he's going through. How recently had Fred died? "Can I ask what happened?"
Charlie looked down at her, and the sadness in those eyes made (Y/N)'s heart crumple. "Battle of Hogwarts."
(Y/N) sucked in a breath, her jaw dropping slightly. It had only been a little over a year since the battle. She had read about it of course. Even in America, Voldemort's defeat was all people talked about for months. After Grindelwald, Ilvermorny ensured students knew about Harry Potter and the history of one of the darkest wizards of all time for fear of him invading America. But she had never imagined coming so close to it all. Charlie's brother was amongst the fallen who had fought and died for the rest of the wizarding world. She suddenly felt stupid for not putting the pieces together sooner. Charlie had gone to Hogwarts after all. "Did you fight in the battle too?"
The redhead nodded. "My whole family did."
(Y/N)'s gaze flicked back and forth between the Thestral and Charlie. "That's why you can see them," she whispered, reaching a hand out to stroke the creature's muzzle again. "Did you see him- I mean did you see Fred-" (Y/N)'s voice cracked and she looked away, blinking away the tears gathering in her eyes. She hoped he knew what she meant because she didn't think she could get the words out.
"No," he said, and a wave of relief washed through her. "I saw a lot of people die that day, but not my brother. I came in halfway through. I didn't even know he had died until it was all over."
(Y/N) fell silent, unsure of what to say, before deciding to take a risk. She placed her hand on top of his forearm and squeezed, letting her thumb brush comfortingly across his smooth, freckled skin. "I'm really sorry. It's one of the worst feelings in the world and I know nothing I say will make it any better."
Charlie attempted a smile. "You sure? Because talking to you has made it a little better."
It was possibly the worst thing he could have said to her. Butterflies gathered in her stomach and she pulled her hand back, feeling stupider than ever as a smile tried to reach her lips. This conversation was definitely not helping her put an end to the idiotic crush she had begun developing for the redhead.
To make matters even worse, Charlie nudged the side of her knee with his own, causing a cluster of goosebumps to break out down her leg. "Your turn," he said, nodding towards the Thestral.
(Y/N) knew what he meant, but the answer approached dangerous territory. She didn't want to tell him anything, but how could she not after Charlie had finally opened up to her? She just wouldn't tell him the full story.
"My brother was a Curse-Breaker," (Y/N) started, continuing to pet the Thestral. "He went missing while he was at Ilvermorny, and I started looking for him once I got there. It took me awhile to find him, but I eventually did." (Y/N) let out a breath, trying her best to keep the flashbacks from her mind. "But he wasn't the same. He was obsessed with these Cursed Vaults around Ilvermorny and the last one killed him."
Charlie's forehead creased with worry. "You saw him die?"
(Y/N) nodded. "I tried to stop him, but he wouldn't listen. By the time I caught up with him-" (Y/N) broke off and cleared her throat. "Let's just say I wish I hadn't." The sound of thunder began pounding in her ears, and she shut her eyes, giving her head a slight shake as she forced the miserable memory away.
"Life really isn't fair sometimes," he muttered.
"No. But I still think everything happens for a reason."
"Yeah?"
She nodded. "Yeah."
Charlie let out a sigh, and he was quiet for another moment before whispering, "Does it ever get any easier?"
She looked up at him, wanting him to see the honesty in her eyes as she nodded. "Yeah, it does."
"Good. I'm sorry about your brother, and I'm sorry you had to leave all those creatures behind. I couldn't imagine leaving these dragons."
(Y/N) smiled. "You guys make it a little easier."
That brought a smile to the redhead's face, one of his genuine ones that lit up his eyes and tugged on (Y/N)'s heart. "What creature do you miss the most?"
(Y/N) frowned. "My Hippogriff Sirius. I'd never admit it to the other creatures, but Hippogriffs have always been one of my favorites."
"Sirius?"
She internally cursed herself for mentioning the Hippogriff's name. "Uh, after Sirius Black. I was a bit obsessed with him when his whole story came out. Couldn't imagine being in Azkaban for twelve years as an innocent wizard."
Charlie laughed. "I'm technically related to him."
(Y/N) blinked at him, completely astounded. "What?"
"My dad's mom was a Black."
"Oh," (Y/N) muttered, feeling suddenly embarrassed for some reason. "Small world."
"Yeah, I never got to meet him, but my siblings did because of the Order of the Phoenix and since he was Harry's godfather."
"You mean Harry Potter?" (Y/N) asked rhetorically. She knew that's who he meant because it had been all over the papers how tragic it was that Sirius never got a chance to be the father figure that Harry Potter deserved, but she couldn't resist a laugh. "You talk about him like you're friends."
Charlie seemed the least bit fazed by this. "Well, he is my brother Ron's best friend and has been dating my sister for over two years."
"What?" (Y/N) gaped at him, completely dumbfounded. "You mean the Harry Potter might be your brother-in-law one day and I'm just now hearing about it?"
Charlie laughed. "Sorry, I'm so used to him hanging around my family I forget how some wizards see him."
(Y/N) wanted to understand where he was coming from but just couldn't. It was Harry Freaking Potter they were talking about. That would be like saying meeting Newt Scamander was no big deal. She shook her head, still bewildered. "You're insane."
The pair sat there for a little longer as the sun began to set. When Charlie remained quiet, (Y/N) gave into the question that had been nagging at her since he had told her about Fred. "So does this mean we're friends now? Because to be honest, I feel like I've been getting mixed signals for the past two months."
"Sorry about that," he said, rubbing the back of his neck. "Hank's been telling me for weeks I need to get over it, but ever since Fred died it's been hard to let people in."
"A lot of people don't understand," (Y/N) said empathetically. "Nobody, not even my friends, knew how to act around me after my brother died."
"Yeah," Charlie agreed, a sad smile reaching his lips. "It's nice to finally have someone who gets it. And yeah, I'd say we're friends now."
(Y/N) smiled, feeling jitters dance around her stomach. She paused for a moment before peering up at him. "Well then as your friend, can I ask you a personal question?"
Charlie's eyes narrowed in suspicion. "What?"
"So I know you love dragons and all, but you're not like into them, are you?" She bit back laughter at the look on the redhead's face.
He shook his head, laughing a bit too. "Funny. Real funny. Did Hank tell you to ask me that?"
"NoâŚ" She bit her lip, unsure how truthful she should be. "A certain blonde may have accused you of being more attracted to dragons than women."
The redhead rolled his eyes but didn't seem the least bit offended. "I swear my dating life- or lack thereof- has been of more interest to people around here than I would have ever imagined."
(Y/N) laughed, and luckily stopped herself from saying, "Can you blame them?" The last thing she was going to do was to admit to Charlie just how good looking and talented he was. "You don't have to talk about it. It's really nobody's business."
Charlie shrugged. "There's just not much to tell. I was pretty much consumed by dragons at Hogwarts. I didn't even have a crush on anyone until my last year."
That wasn't weird. People were allowed to be picky or have other priorities. "Did you two end up dating?"
"Yeah. But it was pretty stupid because I knew I was going to Romania and she was staying close to home."
"Ah."
"So then I came here and was primarily focused on work. And it's not like there was an abundance of options around."
(Y/N) nodded slowly, arguing internally on whether or not to ask the next thought that popped into her head. After a moment, she decided to go for it. "And what about Sydney?"
Charlie shrugged again. "She's nice, I just never felt comfortable around her. She didn't really understand the whole dragon obsession. This is just a job for her. Probably why she made that comment."
(Y/N) wanted to ask if he felt comfortable around her but realized how it would sound in that context. The last thing she wanted was for Charlie to think she was flirting with him. She was not about to ruin their new friendship. "Well, she doesn't know what she's missing. This has easily been the best job I've ever had."
"How many have you had?" Charlie said with a laugh, sounding surprised. "I thought you were a Magizoologist before this?"
(Y/N)'s smile faltered. "I was, but only for the last two years. I, uh, moved around a lot after my brother died. Had quite a few different jobs after graduation."
"Like what?"
"Healer, Potioneer, Wandmaker, and a couple others," (Y/N) muttered with a shrug.
"But you graduated the same year I did. Did you really have a new job every year?"
(Y/N) felt nervous being put on the spot. "No, I told you I spent two years at the Reserve." She elbowed him playfully in attempt to lighten the mood, but he frowned.
"So the longest you've ever stayed somewhere is two years? Does that meanâŚ" Charlie didn't finish the sentence but he didn't have to.
Stomach acid churned in (Y/N)'s belly at the thought of leaving the Sanctuary. "I don't know to be honest. Like I said, this is the best job I've ever had, so you might have a harder time getting rid of me."
This seemed to reassure the redhead. He smiled at her, and (Y/N) knew she was doomed because all she could think about was that it seemed like Charlie didn't want her to leave, and that thought made her way happier than it should have.
Eyeing the darkening sky, Charlie said, "Race you back to the village?" Before she even responded, he was standing up and picking up his broom.
"Hey, you cheater!" (Y/N) called as the redhead kicked off the ground just as she reached her broom. She darted up after him, heading back home, and couldn't help but think that this was going to be the start of one of the best friendships she would ever have.
-
October and November came and went even faster than the previous months, and (Y/N) couldn't believe how much fun she was having with team. She felt entirely comfortable around all of them now and hung out with Charlie all the time. She was sure, however, to set specific boundaries for herself, not wanting her ridiculous crush to get out of hand. She was hoping it would disappear altogether soon enough and there would be nothing to worry about.
When the first snowfall of the season came one December morning, (Y/N) couldn't wait to visit the dragons and see just how glorious the Sanctuary's scenery looked.
"Hurry up," she groaned as Scott and Hank took longer than usual to get going. Charlie, on the other hand, didnât disappoint and seemed as ready as he always was. He was definitely a morning person.
"I thought we agreed to start later in the winter," Scott grumbled mid yawn, pulling a hat onto his head and rubbing his hands over the sleeves of his coat. "It's bloody freezing out here."
"The sooner we start, the sooner we get hot cocoa," Hank pointed out even though he too looked less enthused about working.
They started with Gertie and Aro first, feeding them and making sure they had enough areas to stay warm. Most dragons could handle the severe weather due to their love of mountainous regions, but they weren't entirely immune to illness and overall irritation from the drastic change. Certain breeds in particular seemed to handle the frigid climate better than others, and that became clear as they approached Odie, the Antipodean Opaleye.
"Boy he's cranky," Hank said after dodging a second blast of fire from the agitated beast. Odie was refusing to let anyone feed him or even step within 50 feet of him.
Charlie laughed as he guided the raw sheep meat back onto the ground several yards away from Odie. "You probably would be too if you were from Australia."
"True." Hank stepped away from the rock he had hid behind, his eyes never leaving Odie in case another burst of flames came his way.
"I hate to be the bearer of bad news," (Y/N) began, eyeing the purple patch covering the dragon's right ear, "but I think it's more than him just not liking the weather. I think he's developed frostbite from it."
"Shit," Scott grunted as his gaze followed (Y/N)'s. "I told you guys we should have made them wait until Spring to ship him here."
Hank slid his wand back into his pocket and turned to Charlie. "Guess I should go nag the research team to help us stun him. Should I get Logan or Felix to heal it?"
Charlie looked from Odie's ear to (Y/N). "Can you do it?"
(Y/N) craned her neck to see the full span of the injury. "If I can somehow get within five or so feet of him then yeah."
"Five feet?" Hank pointed out, quirking an eyebrow.
(Y/N) groaned in exasperation. They loved mocking her American ways. "One and a half meters, whatever. I think you should use the freezing charm instead though."
"Are you mad?" Scott spat.
"If we stun him we risk him not eating for another hour. Dehydration and starvation will only make the frostbite and his attitude worse."
"Can't we use the body-bind curse instead?" Scott asked. "I'd feel far better about you getting so close if he was more restrained."
"And traumatize him while he's hurting?" (Y/N) asked, flinching at the idea.
Scott turned to Hank, clearly looking for backup, but the forty-three year old shrugged and started toward the pathway. "It's your funeral, darlin'."
Five minutes later, Hank came back with Logan and Dave to help with the charm. "Six of us should do it, don'tcha think?"
The rest of them nodded. Half a dozen were usually plenty to subdue a more timid breed like Odie.
"You sure you want to do this?" Charlie asked, handing (Y/N) his gloves. "It's not exactly the safest task in the world."
She smiled at him, sliding the brown material over her hands. "If I wanted safe, I hardly would have picked this career."
He chuckled, seemingly satisfied with her answer. "I've got your back."
(Y/N) hated when Charlie made comments like that. They were crossing far too many of her boundaries and made her insides tingle in a way she wished it wouldn't. Still, she put on another smile and withdrew her wand. "You better."
The six of them lined up and waited for Odie to lay down. As soon as he was comfortably resting on the snow-covered ground ahead, they all shouted, "Immobulus!"
(Y/N) darted forward, unsure of exactly how much time she had, and moved to the dragon's right side, staying as far away from his mouth as possible. With a complicated wave of her wand, she used the hot-air charm first, letting a gentle mist of steam warm the affliction. As soon as the proper pearl color returned to Odie's ear, she performed two healing charms on the injured ear and one charm on the opposing ear to prevent it from facing the same fate later.
"Hurry up," Scott warned. "Or we'll have to do it again."
"No, I'm good," (Y/N) said, catching sight of the slightest movement of the dragon's arms. Just as she stepped back, Odie unfroze completely, standing up and flapping his wings. (Y/N) was almost out of the danger zone until his giant white tail flicked once behind him, hitting her thighs and sending her falling backwards. She winced as her back hit the ground, knocking the wind out of her momentarily and shooting her wand into the air. Luckily, the snow helped ease her fall and she recovered quickly, automatically reaching her hand out and saying, "Accio wand."
Big mistake. Odie's gaze hungrily followed the wand as it flew through the air, clearly mistaking it for potential food. As the wand landed in its owner's hand, Odie's eyes darkened, just now spotting (Y/N) and how close she was.
Knowing no one would be able to subdue or distract him in time, (Y/N) moved faster than she had ever moved before, scrambling behind the only boulder in sight as the Antipodean Opaleye sent a rush of flames her way. She overheard the men in the background attempting to extinguish the blast, but they could only manage to lessen the blow. She ducked as close to the snow as humanly possible, but she was so worried about her head, she forgot to move the hand resting against the rock. Pain seared the back of her left hand as the flames reached the glove, and she jerked it away, tucking her whole body behind the boulder. When she heard Scott and Hank taming Odie, she relaxed, sitting up and yanking off the glove to examine the reddened, already blistering skin. Their gloves protected them as much as possible but could only do so much against such direct contact with fire.
A familiar head of red hair came into view as Charlie crouched down beside her. "You okay?"
"Almost," she said before letting out a sigh of relief as she rested the back of her hand into the snow. She couldn't help but laugh a little, still feeling jolts of adrenaline course through her body. "Would you think I'm utterly insane if I said I'm even a little excited about my first potential scar here?"
A grin spread across Charlie's freckled face. "Not one bit." He stood back up and extended a hand to her. "Come on, let's get that cleaned up."
(Y/N)'s hand started feeling better after burn-healing paste was applied. She continued working for the rest of the day while Hank and Scott profusely commended her readiness and ability to stay calm.
"I could have sworn you were gonna lose your eyebrows like Scott did his first year," Hank had said, ruffling Scott's hair while Scott jerked away.
"It was only one eyebrow and that only happened one time."
The team retired early and (Y/N) was in her kitchen, enjoying a cup of tea and trying to ignore the occasional twinge in her hand, when there was a knock on her door.
"Come in," she called, and she was instantly annoyed by the flip in her stomach as Charlie's silhouette came into view. He was wearing a knitted crimson sweater she had never seen before with a dragon embroidered in the middle. None of them wore nice clothes much since they were usually out on the field, and she tried to avert her eyes, not wanting to admit to herself how well it suited him.
"Figured you could probably use some more of this," he said, closing the door behind him and setting a fresh bottle of the burn-healing paste onto the table.
"Thanks," she said, smiling up at him. "Want a cup of tea?" His eyes glanced uncertainly to the auburn liquid steaming in her teacup and she laughed. "Relax, I have milk and sugar if you want it."
He smiled. "Sure then."
"You Brits are weird," she muttered, moving toward the kettle as Charlie took a seat on the wooden loveseat off to the left and let his eyes wander around her place. The pair had hung out a lot, but not so much in each others' houses, and (Y/N) suddenly felt nervous.
She poured a second cup of tea and grabbed the burn-healing paste from the table before joining Charlie in the section of the room that would be considered the living room. She did, however, decide to sit in the chair adjacent to the loveseat. Boundaries.
"Thanks," he said, accepting the mug from her and leaning back into the cushioned seat. "You did really great today."
"All in a day's work," she said casually, feigning boastfulness with a shrug of her shoulders.
He laughed and set the teacup down on the coffee table in front of them. "You gonna put more of that on or am I going to have to do it for you?" he asked, indicating the bottle next to his mug.
Boundaries, boundaries, boundaries, (Y/N) repeated over and over in her head. As much as she hated to admit it, the tiniest part of her understood what Sydney had meant. Charlie was a little clueless when it came to how words and actions could be interpreted. "Okay, mom."
"I just know how much it hurts going on at first."
He wasn't wrong. It stung like a bitch the first time she applied it after the incident, but she wasn't about to admit that. She had a relatively high pain tolerance and was a little too prideful when it came to her resilience. "It's not that bad."
"Oh really?" He picked up the bottle and offered it to her. "Go ahead then."
She stared at it, trying to convince herself that it was like ripping off a bandage, but in the end she didn't want to do it.
Charlie grinned. "That's what I thought." He opened the bottle and poured some of the potion onto his palm.
"What are you doing?"
The redhead moved in front of her, sitting on the edge of the coffee table before reaching for her hand. "Doing it for you. We need your hand better before Monday."
The word BOUNDARIES blared in (Y/N)'s head like a siren, complete with flashing red lights, bells and whistles. She pulled her arm away, attempting a laugh. "I can do it myself," she insisted, trying to snatch the bottle away from him.
This didn't seem to deter him in the slightest. He just stared at her, a half smile on his lips. "And people say I'm stubborn."
She kept her eyes locked on his, refusing to be the first to break eye contact.
"Technically it's only fair,â he added, âconsidering I let you help me.â
Shit. That son of a bitch cornered her. She glowered at Charlie, feeling defeated as she pulled her sleeve up and extended her left arm.
"Was that so hard?" he asked right as he brushed the potion across the back of her hand, making (Y/N) wince as the orange paste fought to heal her burned flesh. The pain lasted no longer than a minute though and was soon replaced by jolts of electricity at Charlie's touch.
It was less than five minutes before Charlie screwed the cap on the potion and set it back onto the table, but (Y/N) was more concerned with the fact that he didn't return to the couch. Instead, he pointed to the scar along her forearm. "I've wondered how you got that for awhile now."
"Oh, I had to fight off a Chimera once. He got a good slash in but don't worry, I won." Her gaze instinctively flicked to his eyebrow. Her rules were screaming at her to resist the urge, but he had touched her hand first. It was only fair. She reached up, briefly brushing the pad of her thumb across the small scar that separated his left brow. "Your turn."
The redhead cracked a smile, raising his own hand up to touch the scar. "Why does everyone have to ask about this one? It's actually the least exciting of them all."
"Try me."
"Okay⌠my brother Bill and I wanted to try and play Quidditch once when we were little. He started teasing me, saying there was no way I could ride an adult broom, so I took it from him. Needless to say I fell, but I actually would say I did fairly well considering I was only five."
(Y/N) laughed, unable to ignore how cute a stubborn five year old Charlie had to have been. "No fair. I can't believe you got to ride on a broom that young. My mom would have had my head."
Charlie laughed. "I never said I didn't get in trouble for it."
The pair talked for a little while longer before (Y/N) said, "I like your sweater by the way."
Charlie arched a brow, following her gaze and pinching the knitted material between his fingertips. "You mean jumper?"
"Ugh, whatever." (Y/N) let her head fall back against the chair and Charlie chuckled. At least it wasn't as bad as finding out Brits thought you were talking about underwear when you said pants. (Y/N) had reiterated the word trousers until it stuck in her mind for good. âWhereâd you get it?â
The redhead looked a little embarrassed. "Uh, my mum made it."
That was probably the cutest thing (Y/N) had ever heard in her life and she didnât know which was worse- the fact that Mrs. Weasley was perfect enough to knit her children sweaters or the fact that Charlie was the type of son who actually wore them. "When are you leaving to go see them?"
"Probably a few days before Christmas. I usually stay for about a week."
(Y/N) hoped her disappointment didn't show on her face. She knew Hank and Scott were going to be there, but she was going to miss Charlie.
"Are any of your friends coming to visit you?"
(Y/N) frowned. "Not until early next year. A lot of them are stuck at work or visiting their own families."
Charlie nodded and looked like he had something else he wanted to say.
"What?"
He peered up at her, and if (Y/N) wasn't mistaken, a subtle tinge of pink highlighted his freckled face. "You could come to the Burrow with me if you want."
(Y/N)'s heart stopped. As her mind caught up with his offer, she waved a hand at him. "Oh no, that's okay. Don't worry about me, I'll be fine here."
Much to her dismay, however, Charlie didn't let it go like she thought he would. "It really wouldn't be a big deal. There's already nearly a dozen of us so there's always plenty of food. And to be honest, Christmas is a bit dismal here at the Sanctuary."
(Y/N) had no doubt that Christmas would be disappointing here, but this was exactly the sort of cluelessness she had been referring to. Charlie was just being a nice friend, she told herself, refusing to let the offer go to her head. But why was he asking her and not Hank or Scott?
No. She was overthinking it. Maybe he had asked Hank and he had said no because Chloe was visiting. And she already knew Scott said he would hang back to help Hank with the dragons. Maybe he asked the team every year and it was no big deal.
"Uh, I don't know⌠I'm not sure I could handle meeting Harry Potter. I'd probably embarrass the hell out of myself."
Charlie laughed. "If either of us stands to be embarrassed it would be me. My siblings live to humiliate one another."
(Y/N) fell silent, trying to ignore just how much she would love a chance to meet his family.
"Are you really going to say no to me two days before my birthday?"
"Hey, that's not fair," she said, crossing her arms over her chest.
"I think it is. Think of it as a birthday present."
Why was he being so persistent? This was crossing dozens of boundaries. The last thing she needed to do was fall in love with his family. "What if I already got you a present?"
Charlie's eyes narrowed. "I told you guys not to."
"No, you told us not to buy anything," she corrected before standing up and walking over to her dresser. She opened the bottom drawer, withdrawing a neatly folded sweater before returning to Charlie. "My team gave me this after the Bludger I hit stopped the other team's Seeker and won us the House Cup." She held up the striped blue sweater, showing off the Snitch darting around the center of it. "I never wore it much because let's face it, two Bludgers moving around on it would have been much cooler, but I thought you might like it. I was going to turn it red for Gryffindor and use the enlargement charm on it."
Charlie stared at her, smiling one of those damn smiles- the ones she had become strongly opposed to because of the way they made her feel. "Can I see it on?"
(Y/N)'s eyebrows narrowed inquisitively, but for some reason she obliged, tugging the sweater on over her long sleeve shirt. "Well?"
"I have one word for you," Charlie said, his appreciative smile replaced by an alarmingly playful expression. "Run."
(Y/N)'s eyes grew wide and she darted toward the front door, swinging it open just as the redhead started after her.
After managing to somehow not kill herself on the slushy porch steps, (Y/N) ran toward the west wing, knowing the exact path to take to avoid any dragons. "You're insane," she called as she heard the redheadâs footsteps behind her, but she couldn't restrain a giggle. Pushing past a tall patch of brush, (Y/N) made her way toward the manufacturing team, passing by crates full of dragon-hide gloves and boxes of dragon heartstrings. She tried to slow him down by knocking a couple empty boxes back toward him, but Charlie easily sidestepped them.
"You're gonna have to try harder than that," he said, laughing as he gained in on her.
(Y/N) was panting hard by now, not used to breathing the cold air into her lungs. She kept running though, set on where she was headed, but her plan came to a screeching halt as the path she was intending to follow was covered with a pile of shoveled snow.
Before she could start running again, Charlie caught up with her, and just as she had anticipated, he tackled her onto the powdery mound of snow.
Neither could stop laughing as they landed in the pile, which was nearly deep enough to consume them both. It wasn't until (Y/N) had wiped the snow from her face and opened her eyes that her laughter died out.
"Gotcha," Charlie said, grinning down at her. He was bracing himself on his forearms to prevent from crushing her, and his face was so close- less than five inches from her own, making her go slightly dizzy. She dropped her head back into the snow, letting her eyelids flutter shut as she tried to steady her racing heartbeat- which was only racing because of all the running.
"Fine, you win," she said, and (Y/N) was more than relieved to feel the twenty-six year old collapse onto the ground next to her. She chanced a glance at him, but it wasn't much better. She still felt every urge to kiss him. "I'll go with you."
The redhead grinned at her, still panting slightly from the running. "Good. I prefer the jumper on you anyways."
(Y/N) knew Charlie just enjoyed messing with her and showing off his Seeker abilities, but that didn't stop her from wishing he meant something else by that.
Yep. She was completely and utterly doomed.

đźGood morning everyone and a happy Tuesday to you all! I had a lot of people ask me about my Outertale on Discord. That beat out pretty much all the other options on the poll so here we go! This is one of the larger ones because I had a lot of fun putting some of my favorite sci-fi concepts into this. I am a huge SG1 fan so you can definitely see that reflected. I admittedly am the fantasy genre girl so any ideas are welcome! I just liked the idea that the monsters in this were more than just typical monsters. DO NOT REPOST MY WORK WITHOUT MY PERMISSION IT IS NOT FOR YOUR USE. IF YOU LIKE MY WORK PLEASE REBLOG INSTEAD! It helps me so much! It makes such a difference.đIf you want more of these just let me know! Itâs the only way I can gauge interest! Outertale Alternate âNicknamesâ Info: ďżź Sans: Nova- Nova is the trickster though he is mostly associated with that of Loki. Some argue his many centuries gave him a nihilistic outlook on life or that he is too young to understand the true ways of the world. Not to say that Nova canât be serious but he is pretty laid back. Itâs one of the reasons unlike the others he doesnât really keep his cultural ties in his design. He should have more Norse in it but nah⌠varsity jackets are cozy right? I mean he is wearing star shorts for starâs sake. Then I lost ma job. Got a second chance though. Andromedaâs constantly watchin me. hehe no harm done though.â Both Pollux and Nova refer to each other as brothers but it is unclear if they are biologically related. Their abilities and strengths are nearly opposite and their mythos even more so. Papyrus: Pollux- The presumed older brother of Nova. Pollux is associated with Egyptology specifically wisdom. Pollux tends to be the opposite of Nova in that he takes his job very seriously. Once on earth, he was known as Thoth gracing humanity with a mechanical and architectural knowledge that astounded the world. His mind and intellect put him at the forefront of innovation making him one of Capricornâs best and most trusted advisors. He enjoys testing the mental prowess of others using puzzles and riddles of his own design. Unlike canon Pap, Pollux cares more about balance in life. Something his younger brother seems to lack. Not all work and not all play. He is kind, helpful, and willing to give advice to anyone that is looking for it. To the little human Frisk, he is a good mentor and teacher. (Pollux has made it his pastime to create a series of challenges to prove a humans worth. If they pass then they are able to speak/ see them. No one has managed to prove themselves.) Undyne: Andromeda- Andromeda is not different from canon Undyne as she embodies the Mayan mythology. She is most closely associated with the feathered serpent QuetzalcĂłatl. A deity of wind and rain. Also known as life-giver. Her favorite kind of anime to watch are mech-based. Alphys: Elara- Very similar to canon Alphys just as this version of Undyne is. Alphys is based on Sukuna-Biko-Na (ĺ°ĺćŻĺ¤éŁ) or the Shinto god of medicine and rain. Elara is still very much a scientist and one that has a unique fascination with living things. Everything from the planets, to humans, animals, and plant life. She particularly enjoys spending time in her private greenhouse creating and taking care of all of the plant life. Before the monsters were forced to leave their place among the humans she was able to collect all the DNA of the plants and animals on the planet. Ambisagrus, a god of thunder and lightning, Ancestor God, Sky God, God of Wind, Rain & Hail is what he is based on. One such role is that of Zeus whose main symbol is that of lightning and thunder. Just like the Zeus of mythology Capricorn is constantly debating his involvement with humanity. Whether that be to stop their technological advances or aiding in their lives. A large portion of his time was spent with his subjects not so much his wife Aurora who is the jealous type. Capricorn is not a ruthless leader but he does know that sometimes hard decisions must be made. Just like UT Asgore, he is kind and benevolent, however, he has a temper if you make him angry enough. His magical abilities lean more toward lighting then fire but he has that ability as well. He tasked Elara to watch over human development should a problem arise. In addition to the stars, she is also known for being a loving mother and caregiver. In her time on earth, she used to watch over and protect children and their families. Aurora though previously jealous of her simple in the universe has come to accept and embrace it. She is kind but rather overprotective. Anyone that forsakes life will feel her wrath. Muffet: Umbra- Umbra is associated with Hindu mythology as a goddess of wealth and prosperity. Though earthly riches do not concern Umbra she still has a taste for the fine silks and gold that she once had on earth. A little about the goddess that she represents: Lakshmiâs name comes from the Sanskrit word âlaksya, meaning an aim or goal. She is the goddess of wealth and prosperity, both material and spiritual. Unlike UT Muffet, Umbra also focuses on spiritual wealth. Peace of mind. She is ever the optimist even when things do not turn out to go her way. In times of need, she is called those in the struggles of self-worth trying to bring them into a different understanding. There have been many a time when Umbra calms Capricorns quick and rash judgments, much to Auroraâs displeasure. Just as with the rest of the pantheon she is kind and helpful even with her yearning to return to the people she so loved before they were forced to the outskirts of the galaxy. Grillby: Helio- Helio derived from the sun is my OT Grillby. He out of all the characters could care less about either being a deity or an observer. He is known to be at a middle ground. He would rather live his days running a social establishment but during his time on earth, he was known for his magic. Originally he was the right hand of Capricorn being depicted as a war deity for his fiery nature. He was the general of grand armies. His armor is something he hung up long ago but if called into court he will wear it once again. Its design is very reminiscent of Roman centurions. Though depictions of him are curious since his name back then was referred to as Merlin. He was best known for his magic and alchemy and the concoctions he made during a period of time far lacking in imagination. Just like Nova, Helio tended to interfere far too often in the affairs of man though noble in purpose. He tends to be outcast among the pantheon for his past conduct but he is content in his lab mixing crazy concoctions. Everything from love potions to disguises. His forte is all about alchemy and magic. His reckless behavior had him appearing to a human that begged for his salvation. His associations are nonexistent since he was born after the times of gods. His abilities seem to be mimic based. He is able to learn about abilities and use them at will. It is rare that monsters have children and as such Azi is the little prodigy child even though there are many times he just wants to be a kid. He makes friends with Frisk very quickly and learns a lot from the human visitor. Gaster: 9X (I canât even)- 9x (can be pronounced NYX or Nine-X) is the Gaster of this universe. He tends to reject the laws placed upon the rest of the pantheon regardless of repercussions. Itâs speculated that both Pollux and Nova were a part of him and crafted into the monsters that are known today. Nova being his more devious side which Pollux is more his intellect and drive. He has been locked away for a very long time in a prison aptly named Tartarus. His abilities are space and time-oriented very similar to Nova which makes him difficult to imprison. He, of course, has been in his cell for quite some time and it is unclear if he actually has had a change of heart or using it as a manipulation tactic. The only one he speaks with on occasion is Azi wanting to learn more about this planet they all used to call home. It is information that the others tend to not speak of. His father more so as he is afraid it will instill a yearning in his son. 9Xâs genius is on par with his godly abilities such as creating artificial intelligence. Something that is not considered life. He uses Azi as a template for this new program⌠FLOWEY- F- Friendly L- Life-like O- Operating system W- With E- Earthbound Y- Yearning ďżź F.L.O.W.E.Y was created by 9x and Nova with Azi as a template. He is a charismatic AI who was originally created as a helper as well as to teach the Prince about their planet of origin. Unfortunately, Flowey does not have the same reservations about disobeying his father as Azi does. Even going so far as to integrate with key and vital systems in The Capital. Flowey is not evil he just is driven to be the best help he can without regards to any type of consequences. He also feels abandoned by Nova as he was not only his creator but also his closest friend. It was why he was made. To be a companion and friend. ďżź He helps Frisk meet and learns more about their existence. He acts like a companion. However, when Frisk becomes friends with Azi Floweyâs AI goes haywire. He begins to feel emotions he is not technically allowed to such as jealousy. This causes him to try and eliminate those threatening him which in this case would be all the monsters. Eventually, Azi attempts to program himself into the interface changing its initial programming. Some of Floweyâs previous versions: ďżź ďżź ďżź Blookie: Nebula Riverperson: Omni Gerson: Quasar The Ursas: Ursa Major/Minor Greater Dog/ Lesser Dog: Canis Major/Minor ďżź Character Origin/Mythos: Sans- Norse (Trickster)â¨Papyrus- Egyptian Undyne- Mayan Alphys- Japanese (shinto) Asgore- Celtic Toriel- Celtic Muffet- Hinduâ¨Grillby- Medieval (Merlin) Asriel- Celtic through lineage Gaster- Greek/Roman Blookie- Western Guard dogs- Constellations (Native American) Riverperson- Greek (Charon) Gerson- Chinese (Divination/ wisdom) Background and Context: A long time ago there lived beings of great power. They could bend space and time with a simple thought and bring life to their creations. These were the gods. Ones of great benevolence but also great and terrifying power. Humanity, a primitive race just starting to understand life itself, became their focus. At first, their interaction was very rare only occasionally appearing to help but as time went on those interactions became more drastic. Their assistance and knowledge were seen as godlike to these humans. They would bring gifts and offerings to their new deities in hopes that they would look favorably upon them. That they would impart their wisdom and magic if they were pleased. In time this became more and more of a tradition. A religion built upon pleasing these deities so that their lives would be far improved but this became a conundrum for the beings. Some remained benevolent and helpful while others become greedy and wrathful. The power began to go to their minds corrupting their souls. These instances were written down in variation by the humans making up grandiose stories of fiery chariots and jealous gods. Thus mythology came into being for humanity. A way to explain the things in which they did not understand. As with each religion and deity, the monsters each became associated with a specific culture or mythos. A monster that tended to be rather childish in his ambitions jumping from pantheon to pantheon looking to lighten up his other âdeitiesâ stern demeanors. The monsters began to pull away leaving their presences in name only and occasional help but this was short-lived. The Humans Impressions: When the monsters left the humans to their own devices they worship continued long after. Main Plot Synop: The plot to Outertale is very simple as it is more based around the world than it is the actual plot. Humans, however, tend to turn on their own creating factions within the space colonies. Some more prosperous than others. Friskâs colony was one such beast being cut off from the other colonies as a drifter. Unfortunately, Friskâs family was nearly non-existent and being stuck on a space colony was little to be desired. After seeing a streak of fire slamming into the outskirts of the colony. Frisk decides to investigate. They have always been the curious type disobeying orders and questioning everything. The colonies outer and more dangerous regions became their playground finding old pieces of technology. Eventually, they stumble upon a crashed ship. One that It seems too damaged to be used but itâs nothing like they have ever seen before. Everyone else on the colony considers it to be cursed. ďżź The strange runic language is confusing but Frisk finds that there is one lone computer onboard that seems to still function. It flickers with a bright yellow light showing an almost pixelated Flower with a =) face on the screen. Over the next few days, Frisk returns to decipher the runes with the help of their new friend which they find out is called Flowey. It is a project that the curious human enjoys and for once it is nice to have a friend. Eventually, the runes are deciphered claiming some sort of teleportation capability. Once Frisk is close enough the system fires up on its own sending the human straight to the monster Capital on the farthest reaches of the universe. A place that no human has ever been. ďżź The rest of the story is an exploration of this new environment. Both Azi and Frisk are almost like siblings coined the star children.

cadel + theron: swtor & the secret world crossover/au concept
Deleted my last post about this because I didnât like it. Going to try again.
This is a thought thatâs been in my mind for the last few weeks for no reason other than that I find it fun to imagine. What if my SWTOR character Cadel Browydr and his love interest Theron Shan were in the universe of The Secret World? (See here for more info on Cadel and Theron)
For those unfamiliar with The Secret World, itâs an urban fantasy MMO. Its setting is our modern-day Earth under attack from occult forces. There is magic, mythical creatures, and secret societies pulling the strings and controlling the world. Among these secret societies are the Templars, the Dragon, and the Illuminati.
All of these thoughts are my own and Iâm not dictating what someone elseâs SWTOR + The Secret World crossover should look like. Iâm just writing my thoughts down so that I can keep track of them. This whole thing is hideously self-indulgent, so be warned.
tl;dr: This is how Iâd do it -- Theron comes from Los Angeles, California, and was force-recruited into the Illuminati after graduating from university. Cadel was born in Ottawa, Ontario, into a Templar-affiliated family that taught him traditional Templar values growing up. Details under the cut.
-- ILLUMINATI AGENT: THERON SHAN --
Theron was born in Los Angeles, California. His parents, Jace and Satele, divorced when he was very young. They had joint custody of him, but Theron lived mainly with his mother, only being sent to his fatherâs when his mother had to travel for work. His mother worked in disaster relief and his father was a businessman. Theron didnât really bond with either of his parents growing up. His mother was firm and disciplinary, and his father was very busy with work, so neither of them really gave Theron the love and support he needed. He grew up rather lonely, though he discovered a talent for music -- this became his âescapeâ, teaching himself piano and guitar and writing short songs on occasion. He shared his music only rarely with his peers, and never with his parents. It wasnât until his teenage years when Theron and his father started to grow closer, and they gained some semblance of an ordinary father-son relationship. His mother started to travel for work more often, and so he saw her less. Jace learned of his sonâs musical talent, and while he was supportive of it at first, he convinced Theron that he wouldnât make a good living as a musician. Theron went to study business in university, with his father paying for all of his courses. He proved himself to be a bright student, and even his mother became proud of him -- however, she could not attend Theronâs graduation ceremony due to her work. After the ceremony, Gaia sent a bee for Theron to swallow, and part of the auditorium was destroyed in the following explosion. Soon afterwards, a group of Illuminati revealed themselves to Theron, and Jace revealed himself as a member. They covered up the incident, paid the university a large sum of money to silence them, and sent Theron to the Illuminati Labyrinth in New York. Suddenly plunged into the secret world, Theron had to rapidly learn about the existence of magic and mythical creatures and the secret organizations controlling the world. He learned how to control his newfound powers, preferring anima-infused firearms over magic. During his time training, Jace informed Theron that Satele had been missing since his graduation ceremony. This came as a shock to them both, as Jace had never known about Sateleâs involvement in the secret world. He does not know where she is, but he suspects she is with the Dragon. Theron makes a living as a field agent for the Illuminati, but he disapproves of their lack of ethics, cheating others and their own people to make money and get ahead. Jace agrees with him only partially, but he argues that the Illuminati have power and they get results. Theron wishes to return to his old life in Los Angeles, but he has a feeling that his mother is here somewhere in the secret world, and he wants to find her.
-- TEMPLAR MAGUS: CADEL BROWYDR --
The Templar-affiliated Browydr family is a large and privileged family that has its roots in Cardiff, Wales, though a portion of them live in Ottawa, Ontario, and that is where Cadel was born. Growing up, many of Cadelâs summers were spent in Wales, learning about magic like everyone else in his family. In Canada, he helped his family oversee secret world activity in the area while maintaining an ordinary appearance to the mundane world -- going to school, being part of the community, et cetera. Though potion-brewing was not one of Cadelâs strong suits, cooking and baking definitely were, and they were his main hobbies throughout his childhood. Cadel expressed dreams of becoming a chef, but his parents told him that he was a Templar, first and foremost. They taught him traditional Templar values -- to fight evil and to protect the world -- and Cadel learned to embrace them. Like the rest of his family, he became fiercely loyal to the Templars, aspiring to become a Templar Knight one day, stamping out evil wherever it may lurk. He was a âgolden boyâ all around, even to the mundane world -- earning good grades in school, participating in sports, and being a role model to his peers. As he grew into adulthood, he started started to reflect on his childhood passion towards food, and how his parents had discouraged him from that. He still cooked on a regular basis, but he didnât feel the same passion as he did before. He also began to question the Templar values heâd been taught -- thinking they may be too extreme or too black-and-white -- which led to disagreements with his family. Cadel ended up feeling lost, not knowing what to do with his life. He went to college and took courses in various fields like English, philosophy, and history, and while he enjoyed learning in those fields, he didnât feel as if they were what he wanted to do with his life. Before he was able to complete a degree, Gaia sent a bee for Cadel to swallow. His family sent him to Temple Hall in London, where he learned to use his new powers, and he became proficient in many different types of magic. He favours Blood Magic and Chaos Magic in particular, and has discovered abilities in thaumaturgy. His magical prowess has earned him the respect of many other Templars, and Temple Hall has awarded him the title of Magus. Since he started working in the field, Cadel has found that what makes him happiest is work where he helps out people in need. This is consistent with one of the values his parents had taught him -- to protect those who cannot protect themselves -- but Cadel remains somewhat critical of other values the Templars uphold. To this day, he remains relatively silent about these criticisms.
-- CADEL & THERON --
(If youâre still reading this and youâve made it this far, I respect you. I also warn you that this following section is the most self-indulgent thing ever.)
Cadel and Theronâs respective factions had them assigned to Solomon Island to rescue survivors and cull the Filth infestation, and that is where the two met. They became friends fairly quickly, and there was physical attraction between the two, but the Templars and Illuminati are old enemies, and this discouraged them from starting a romantic relationship. They kept in contact, but they didnât meet again until months later -- when they were both assigned to Egypt to root out the Cult of Aten. During their downtime, they went to a cafe and shared stories, bonding and growing closer. They eventually confessed to each other and agreed to start a relationship, but they kept it secret from their respective handlers. From then on, working together became a rarity, but they kept their relationship stable, going on dates all over the world and strengthening their bond. Eventually they stopped being so secret about it, and thankfully, their handlers didnât seem to care -- so long as it didnât get in the way of their work. This led to Theron and Cadel discussing their criticisms of their respective factions with each other, and Cadel suggested joining the Council of Venice. Itâs in a neutral position between the Templars, Illuminati, and Dragon, and it may enable the two to do more work helping the world and giving aid to people who need it. Months passed, and they worked and advanced through the ranks of their respective factions, and they got the attention of the Council of Venice. Some time later, they both joined. This was seen as an act of abandonment by Theronâs father and Cadelâs family. This surprised neither Theron nor Cadel, but they remained firm in their decision. They both wanted to work in an organization that aligned with their morals. Eventually Cadelâs family warmed up to the change, though Jace cut off all contact with Theron. This made Theron depressed for a bit, but Cadel was endlessly supportive of him. Working for the Council was not all the two had hoped it would be -- it was and still is slow and inefficient, but Cadel and Theron were still doing work that they enjoyed. Cadelâs family began to accept his and Theronâs relationship, and Theron took this as confirmation -- he and Cadel were made for each other. Theron proposed, and they eventually got married, with all of their friends and Cadelâs family at the wedding. They had invited Jace, too, but unfortunately he did not come. To this day, the two still work for the Council and are still in love. Theron goes crazy for Cadelâs cooking, and Cadel helps Theron re-kindle his passion for music. The Beginning
As the night is getting closer, more and more travellers are to be found in camps and cities, and I was always a social butterfly, but I guess they are not so talkative. I guess they all have their worries and maybe they do not have time to relax a bit and have a chat⌠I hope that the people in Velia will still remember me. I miss my friends from there.I will begin first by introducing myself and sharing a bit of my background. I am Arilisu, a 28 year female, born in a mediocre family, but with a great intellect. My mother was a skilled warrior in her early days, then she met my father and she quit her dangerous life to take care of our cute house in Loggia Farm and tend the crops. My father was a skilful trader and managed to put the basis of a small business⌠he had as friends some interesting characters, or this is what I remember since I was a child. He was mostly gone with his trading and sometimes going on adventures, but he wasnât a skilled combatant like my mother. However, one night, someone knocked at our door back home and told us that he was found dead in the forest near the main road to HeidelâŚ. And told that he was probably killed by thieves that sometimes steal from wandering peopleâŚ. It does not make any sense to me, as he was a good man with no real enemies, so his death is still shrouded in mysteryâŚ

However I spent most of my life helping my mother and having fun with my friends. I also took up some combat skills from Itai (my mother) as she taught me some of her moves⌠she always said to me that I have that special something inside me.
One day I woke up though out of nowhere near the Forest of Seclusion with this tiny little black spirit talking to me and giving helpful advices âŚ. I canât seem to remember much about the recent past⌠the only memory I had was when I was saying goodbye to my mother as I was on my way to Velia to meet a friendâŚ

There were plenty of other people âappearingâ out of nowhere next to me, all talking with their own black spirit ⌠I tried asking them what is happening, but no one seemed to care, maybe they were worried about themselves too.
I was sent to do some tasks and I had to kill Grey Foxes âŚ. These cute little animals I used to play with when I was a kid, I had to slaughter some of them to proceed forward in my journeyâŚ. I got sent to the Ancient Stone Chamber to speak with Edan and I canât believe I lived so many years not knowing about these wonderful artifacts that were so close to me!

Even though the place was in ruins (seriously?) I could feel a strong energy wanting me to go deeper and search for more. I saw all these skeletons, all this statues and runes âŚ. No wonder the soldiers guarding this place are not getting bored⌠there is always something new to discover.

I finally reached the Ancient Stone Chamber where Edan was expecting me. My head started to hurt a bit and my heart was pounding pretty fast⌠I could feel the energy, or something burning inside me, flowing inside me, trying to reach out, but I was trying to keep calm as I wanted to know what he wants from me and how I can be of aid.

They âsawâ my black spirit ⌠or they felt it. They told me that I am contaminated and I should get rid of it as soon as possible. They wanted to separate us, but the Black Spirit started absorbing the energy from the chamber, getting more intense until he froze time for a few seconds⌠It was just me and him moving in this timeless space, I could feel the rush even stronger inside me and that is when he grew a bit bigger and everything went back to normal⌠He told me that we will take care of each other ⌠and to be honest, I trust him. Edan told me that Red Nose, the imp, stole a piece of the artefact and his powers grew stronger, attacking everybody in itâs way⌠he sent me to discover more about the Black Spirit and about Red Nose to Feinia and Cliff, with some more killing on the side, this time, the poor tree spirits that just want to be left alone in the forestâŚÂ

As I put my foot out of this forest, I was surprised and shocked to see a cruelsome battlefield between the imps and the humans, each trying to give its best, each with their own motive⌠I took the side of the humans and I helped them recover some goods from a lost Wagon the imps destroyedâŚ.
Guess all this killing is making me worthy to reach Cliff, the captain, who is looking for adventurers/mercenaries to do its killing jobs and send me to Red NoseâŚ

I had to take my time and commemorate the lost livesâŚ. They might have attacked us, but imps are still souls in this living world, whether we like it or not. Yes, I did kill this body, but the path of becoming a great warrior is to also acknowledge your fights and your enemyâs right to liveâŚ

After killing those poor tree spirits and killing more imps, I guess it was enough to earn Captain Cliffâs trust so I can get to know more about everything that is happening. I was invited to meet him at his tent in the Western Guard Camp⌠I hope that I can at least get some rest here and find something to eat as I am starving from all of these things that happened in less than a day!

I managed to get some rest in his tent and enjoyed the moment a bit as he was busy with other travellers when I arrived. I was invited to take a seat and enjoy a nice warm meal: a great vegetable soup with some grilled vegetables and a nice steak. I also tried one of their famous cheese! And It was tasty indeed!

I managed to meet with Cliff, finally, and he congratulated me for helping with the imp problem. However, there is still more of this to come so he sent me to meet with the Blacksmith to get some better gear.

As I left his tent, I said to myself there is no point in rushing, so I took my time to explore the camp more and found this lovely vendor lady that let me search through her potion boxes and I found 2 health ones! The great thing is that I didnât have to pay for them, which kinda reminds me ⌠I am kinda broke so maybe I should start doing some more jobs around here⌠However I seem to get closer to Loggia, where my mother lives, but my memories are still gone. What have I done in the past? How long have I been missing? And why do I feel like I have to strength to do everything?

I also took a moment to take a look over the field âŚ. So much blood and so many dead bodies âŚ. It is awful what is going on here âŚ

Miguel, the Blacksmith, was a really nice guy and he helped me repair my equipment. He also said that I can buy gear from him should I ever need, but I guess for now I am just fine. I seem to sometimes get a piece of armor or gear whenever I am completing a quest, besides the silver I am making, and not to add, the experience I get! We had a few drinks in the sun and he sent me to speak with Feinia for more info about what I will have to do. And yes, it involves more Imp killing.

As I was going through the Western Guard Camp, I met the Stable Keeper and he told me I looked like my fatherâŚ. I was very curious what was happening so I talked to him a little bit more about this subject. He wasnât one of my fatherâs friends, but he knew him as my father was sometimes coming here for trading and to meet with old friends. From what the stable keeper told me, my father knew even Cliff, so I guess the apple is not far from the tree J He told me that my father had helped him with a horse once but he never managed to pay him back. So he gave me one of his young horses, Gold, for free, because he appreciated my father. I guess I am pretty lucky today because all these walking and running will get me tired soon! And this cute horse will surely help me in my travels! It is a good thing my mother owned several, and she still has her best one, Pipi, with her, so I know at least the basics of owning a horse! I am probably sure he will become my best friend!

As I was on my way to Incas, a Node Manager I was sent to check up on him and see if he needs any help, I met a weird couple(?), a human and a shai, the last one being depressed and sitting in the middle of the road. I later found out they have a weird fetish and a dom/sub relationship, with the shai being hired to fulfil the humanâs desires, and to be pretty straightforward, the shai was hired to eat ass.
Guess a lot of things happen in this world, no?

Incas was a lovely guy, although, the same as other people that give me tasks or quests, he needed my help to kill some more imps and 2 imp altars. Seeing one was pretty extraordinary as I never thought how they would imagine and celebrate their âspiritual lifeâ. Now back on my way to the camp, and this time, by foot, as I forgot to bring my horse with me. Well, I guess walking isnât that badâŚ

As the night is getting closer, more and more travellers are to be found in camps and cities, and I was always a social butterfly, but I guess they are not so talkative. I guess they all have their worries and maybe they do not have time to relax a bit and have a chat⌠I hope that the people in Velia will still remember me. I miss my friends from there.

One last glimpse over the battlefield before I will head to get some nice sleep here. The scenery is beautiful and I always enjoyed nature. I am proud of being a Lahn, just like my mother used to be and I hope I will find more about the recent events in my past.

Had a few drinks before going to bed, guess this was all for my first day in this journey. And yes, I do like making sexy poses sometimes! I will head to sleep in this nice comfy bed and I will get ready for tomorrow, a new day full of adventures!

Things That Work
Itâs been a while since I shared a good find on this olâ blog. When I use a product that exceeds my expectations I like to share the info, and thatâs exactly what Iâm about to do. The two items are worlds apart, but both have made me happy - so here goes. First, I have ruined my skin. Ruined it. Iâve spent the last two or three years being so careful about sunscreen and keeping my summer browning to a minimum, and I was really happy with my skin. Well, Iâm 55 and had some menopause issues - but I was generally quite happy. When the water aerobics class that I love moved outside at the end of May Iâd already gotten a bit more color than I should; working in the yard and forgetting sunscreen had given me a base tan. Once I started hanging at the outdoor pool,- one hour for class, another hour to âdry offâ on the lounge chairs and chat - not only did my skin darken, it got reallll ugly. Then we went down to the beach to see the whole fam damily. Now here we are on the brink of August and Iâm splotchy, speckled, my pores look larger, and my skin looks like rich, Corinthian leather (only baby boomers will get that). Iâm slathering on sunscreen, probably too little too late, and I quizzed the lovely gals at my local Sephora about a good product to start reversing the damage. They recommended this.

Itâs a peeling solution from The Ordinary that will gently exfoliate and resurface your mug. Imagine my delight upon seeing that itâs less than 8 bucks!

Itâs meant to be used no more than a couple times a week. So far Iâve used it three times and Iâm really seeing a difference. Warning, it looks like blood when you smear it on your face. Itâs really gross. It may be the blood of virgins or unicorns - Iâm not going to ask because it appears to be working and I donât want to spoil it. So if, like me, you have not been kind to your face this summer, check out The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution. For just $7.20 it canât hurt! Item #2 has made me VERY happy. When we updated our kitchen we chose stainless appliances. I love them, but keeping them showroom shiny was a chore. Iâd tried every spray and cleaner and they were all just okay. I did find that a good rubbing from a cloth with a little olive oil on it kept everything streak free and fingerprint free for longer periods. But the finish was, again, just okay. Then I tried this. I love it so much I want to marry it.

Yes, that says $14.97 and it is worth every dang penny. Actually that price is for the kit which means they add a good-sized microfiber cloth. Since one cleaning makes everything look brand new for at least a week (and our appliances are used all day, every day) that big bottle will last quite a while. Quite frankly, this stuff is so magical that if it cost twice as much and lasted half as long Iâd still buy it. Well, Iâm too cheap to pay twice that - but itâs really that good. The instructions say to squirt a little bit on your surface and wipe it all over, then give it a good buffing, all with that microfiber cloth. My appliances absolutely gleam. Iâm no neat freak, and Iâm not fussy - but when stainless appliances donât look clean they really donât look clean. This enchanted potion makes them look brand new. LOVE it. Getchaâ some and get to buffing! And thatâs my boring, little blog post for tonight. Just thought Iâd share a couple of things that have made life a little easier or a bit happier here in my little corner of the world. I mean, itâs not chocolate but theyâre still good things.

Big Bang (Sort of) Editing Story [Day 29]
I started writing this fic while editing my Big Bang story, but am going to continue doing it for other things now that Kill Dear is out. I will write and publish 100 words of the story every time I finish doing whatever task Iâm doing. If youâd like to block these proceedings, please feel free to block the tag proofread stories. I will reblog this post with the parts of the story I do today. Edited chapters are linked; everything else Iâve done so far is under the cut.
My Master Post Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9 Part 10
Iâm giving myself the night off schoolwork and going to catch up on some editing and other stuff. So, letâs have fun with the babies!
Over the course of the next three days of Virgilâs captivity, Virgil would come to the conclusion that his captors were idiots.
This thought flickered to life once again as Logan leaned into the closet to point out another constellation on the ceiling, tottering unstably on his knees as his weight shifted forward and distracted by his enthusiasm.
They were alone in the princeâs room. Patton had left only a few minutes before to help his mother in the kitchen (less because she needed help and more to not make her suspicious about why heâd spent so much time away in the last few days).
He wouldnât be back for a while and Virgil had full mobility in the closet. With Logan leaning over the threshold like that, it would be easy to kill him or even just incapacitate him. One rough yank on his arm would have him completely in the closet. Virgil had no question that he could pin him down so he couldnât activate the restraints, and even if he managed to do so, heâd have been drawn close enough that Virgil could use his legs. He could either force him to take off the cuffs or, since they automatically went to the second setting when he left the closet, just deal with it until he managed to get away.
It would just be so easy. Yet, he did not. He just watched Logan as he leaned stupidly over an assassin while info dumping about stars.
This was the first day that he hadnât felt at all tired when heâd drank the provided nutrition and healing potion, though it had never affected him quite as much as it had the first day. Logan said that meant that his injuries must be healed. It was a weird feeling. He didnât remember when the last time was that he wasnât damaged in some way. Even before his grueling training, thereâd always been bullies at the orphanage and heâd been the youngest and smallest in his age group.
He was also more well rested and fed than he had been in as long as he could remember. He felt better then he knew was possible today, and he suspected that he would only feel better after a bit more time under their care.
He told himself that is why he didnât lash out now. He was waiting until he was as strong as possible to make sure his escape went as well as it could, even if it was a risk. Theyâd mentioned that the king would be gone for three weeks. After he returned, Virgil would surely be turned over to people much more capable of actually keeping him well trapped and less likely to feed him well, give him a nice place to sleep, and leave him without injury. It was a gamble to stay, because it was possible that he wouldnât find another opportunity in time and would get handed over to his fate. Really, if he was being reasonable, he should get out now while he felt good and had a secured opportunity.
Still, he did not. He had not any of the times theyâd given him the opportunity in the last few days. Logan finished his sentence and leaned back out of the closet to safety. He still was speaking though in that soft happy tone. Logan liked the stars. He liked to talk about the stars, and Virgil found he liked to listen to him. They tended to end up in this position whenever Patton was away, just talking as Virgil laid in his closet.
Eventually, Loganâs latest story tapered out. There was silence then for a few moments. Virgil stared up at the fake stars on the ceiling. The stars that Logan had made for him when he really did not have to. Virgil had not been expecting lights in the closet, let alone ones so beautiful and thoughtful. Not ones with stories behind them. Just days ago, if someone had told Virgil the prince would be keeping him in his closet for the next few weeks, Virgil wouldnât have expected a blanket let alone all of this.
He turned his head to look at Logan. âWhat?â Logan asked.
âYour magicâs very beautiful,â Virgil said.
Logan seemed pleased by the complement, lighting up almost as much as the stars he made. âWell, itâs just a basic light spell,â he said, âthough I did make some adjustments to them and the dimmer was a bit more difficult. Anyone could do it with practice.â
Virgil shook his head. âTheyâre special, I think,â he said. âYour magicâs different than most people.â
âHow so?â Logan asked curiously.
âItâs gentle,â he said. âGentle and warm, like eating the warm soup you fed me a couple of days ago.â
âAnd other peopleâs magic feels different?â he asked.
Virgil nodded. âIâve met a lot of magic users, but it always felt bad. Usually it hurts or makes you feel sick or just makes you uncomfortable. Even healing magic always felt like bugs nibbling at my skin, but the potion youâve been having me drink in the morning feels⌠safe. It doesnât hurt or make me want to cry. Itâs just good.â
âMagic often has much to do with the casterâs intentions,â Logan said.
âI think you could poison me gently.â
Logan made an odd expression. âThatâŚâ he said, nose scrunched. âThat is a strange thing to say.â
Virgil cocked his head. âIs it?â
âYes!â Logan said, shaking his head. âYou are far too comfortable with the concept of death for your age.â
âIâm fourteen,â Virgil argued. âThatâs old enough to be sent on missions without a blood compulsion!â
ââŚA what?â Logan asked.
âA blood compulsion,â Virgil said. âYou know, with a multrum.â Logan was frowning at him. âOne works in your gardens and youâre a prince. You had to at least have seen one or two. They take a bit of blood and multrums process it into a little bead. Then youâve got to do what your told or it hurts a lot.â
âI know what a blood compulsion is,â Logan said. âI am simply wondering who would put one on a fourteen-year-old.â
âThey donât,â Virgil said. âThey stop putting them on people when they turn fourteen.â
âAnd exactly what is the age range for it?â Logan asked. Virgil was almost startled by the way his tone was quickly hardening. Heâd never heard him be that harsh even when heâd first woken up in his custody. It made Virgil tense up.
âThey take kids usually when theyâre about 8 and itâs a year of training before your sent on a mission so 9-13,â he said.
âThatâs horrible,â Logan spat so violently that Virgil flinched. Logan didnât seem to notice. âThey force children to kill under a blood compulsion?â
âWell, no one really wants to do it without one when theyâre that little. They get scared, and usually try to chicken out soâŚâ
âSo, they torture them unless they kill someone.â
âI mean⌠itâs not. They have to agree to the deal.â
âAnd if they donât agree to it?â Logan asked.
Virgil thought back to the second time theyâd made him get a blood compulsion. It had been with the multrum before Janus, a girl by the name of Alina. Heâd made the mistake of hesitating on his first kill and faced the consequences before finally giving in and doing the job. When the second mission had come around, Virgil hadnât wanted to accept the blood compulsion.
That had been the first time theyâd made him drink a binding potion. Logan seemed to be able to get an idea about it by the look on his face.
âSo, your options were to be tortured, be tortured in a different way, or murder someone.â Logan looked at him. âYou said your fourteen. Have you ever even killed of your own volition?â
âI⌠no,â he admitted, but quickly added, âbut that doesnât mean I canât. I know what Iâm doing.â
âThat explains a lot about your personality and reactions so far.â
Virgil rankled at that for some reason. âWhat the hell is that supposed to mean?â
Logan just stared at him for a long moment. âWhat they did, what they are doing isnât right you know?â he said.
Virgil blinked at him but said nothing. He became more and more uncomfortable in the silence that ensued.
âWould you like to learn more about magic?â he asked. âThere are many uses other then to hurt. I can teach you a few basics if you like.â
Virgil was confused about the topic change but was relieved about it. âUh,â he thought. âSure. That would be⌠interesting.â
Logan smiled at him. âIâll set up something and we can work with it in the next few days. What would you like to learn?â
âUm, I have no idea. What is there?â
Logan considered it for a moment. âWe could do a hair color changing potion. Or perhaps a small protection charm or I can teach you to make fire shapes.â
âProtection charm,â Virgil said without hesitation.
Logan gave him a sad smile. âOf course. Iâll start showing you how to make them tomorrow and we can actually make some the next day.â
âOkay,â Virgil agreed.
âWould you like to hear more about the stars?â he asked. Virgil nodded. He once again leaned into the closet to point and Virgil once again did not move to attack. Nor did he attack when that afternoon Patton turned his back on Virgil for far too long when they were alone. Nor did he when they settled him to bed once again in the closet. He told himself it was strategic, but he knew it wasnât.
Chapter 12
Logan had needed to spend some time performing royal duties today which left Patton and Virgil alone after breakfast. Patton had started out trying to teach Virgil different board games. Heâd seemed intrigued at first, but after a few games of checkers seemed to grow bored. Patton had gotten a blank stare when heâd asked if Virgil had any ideas about what to do for fun, so now he was trying to figure out something else they could do. He cast his eyes around at what Logan had in his bedroom.
âHow about I read you a book?â he suggested.
Virgil seemed very intrigued by that idea. âSure,â he said.
âOkay!â Patton said cheerfully. âHe popped to his feet and glanced through the small shelf of fiction books Logan kept in his room. He decided to choose one of the lighter ones that Logan and he had liked to read when they were younger. âThis one is called The Never-ending Garden,â Patton said. âItâs about a group of four children and their adventures in a garden. Itâs full of magic and adventure and friendship! Is that alright with you?â
âIt sounds good,â Virgil answered.
Patton happily walked back over to sit next to him. âIt is!â he said.
First, he showed Virgil the picture on the cover of a wild looking garden with four kids roaming through it. One of the children was in a little red wagon being pulled by another one wearing a fancy hat. One of the others was walking, looking at a map while the last had a wooden sword. After giving Virgil a couple of moments too look at the picture, Patton cracked it open.
âWe start with Lydiaâs perspective,â Patton said. âSheâs one of my favorites!â He pointed to a picture of a girl in a raincoat at the beginning of the chapter and Virgil leaned slightly closer to see. Then, Patton cleared his voice.
âIt had been raining that day,â Patton began, âbut Lydia had been so bored that she still begged her father to go out and play when the storm lightened into a sprinkle. He made her change from the yellow dress she had been wearing into the one she often used to help him garden because he knew she was certain to get herself muddy. Her younger brother Marcus asked if he could come too and though part of her wanted to say no because she wanted to explore on her own without her baby brother slowing her down, her father had taught her to be a good big sister, so she agreed to let him come.â
Patton watched Virgil out of the corner of his eye as he read about Lydia meeting up with the neighbor boy, Al, and the three children started to explore the garden in Lydiaâs backyard. Virgil leaned in slightly to look at the pictures and listen to the story intently as the three children traveled deeper and deeper into the garden, but never made it to the back fence. Theyâd just made it to the part where they heard rustling behind the blackberry bush which Patton knew was the last main character, Melly, when Patton felt the need to adjust his posture a bit. Virgil moved in kind and ended up leaning further into Patton.
Without even really thinking about it, Patton brought his arm around to touch the top of his head. Virgil flinched the second Patton made content and Patton drew the hand away immediately. âSorry,â he said with a wince. Patton was a naturally touching person and heâd been having trouble battling his instincts to cuddle everyone and everything while around Virgil, but he knew most touch was not welcome. The poor thing startled every time Patton went to touch him unannounced and even sometimes when heâd said something before doing it.
âI-itâs okay,â Virgil said.
Patton gave him a tight lipped smiled and turned back to the book.
He stilled a second later when Virgil leaned back in and their shoulders brushed. He blinked over at him. âOh,â he said softly. âDo⌠do you want me to touch your hair?â
Virgil curled up into himself a little bit but then nodded.
âOkay,â Patton said. âIâm going to put my arm around you and do that then, okay?â He drew upon his years and years of convincing easily startled cats to allow him to give them pats as he slowly moved his arm back to where it had been before and gently touched the side of his head. He tensed, but didnât startle this time, and so Patton gently ran his fingers through the hair a couple of times. Eventually, the tension bled out of him and he sort of slumped against Pattonâs shoulder. Patton just barely restrained a coo before going back to reading. He continued to stroke the side of Virgilâs hair as he described the gang meeting up with Melly and them being told she was a fairy that lived in the garden.
He'd only gotten to the part about them finding the wagon when Virgil started to shift a bit uncomfortably, his neck craned in an awkward angle. Patton kept reading as he brought the hand in his hair down to his shoulder and pushed lightly. There was the slightest bit of resistance as Virgil didnât know what he was trying to do, but then he allowed Patton to move him. Patton leaned back a bit and picked the book up off his lap before continuing to push him down. Virgil did not help at all, seeming confused about what was going on.
Patton had to poke him around until he was on his back laying across Pattonâs lap. He grinned down at the boy who was looking at him in blatant bewilderment and propped the book up on his chest. He held it there with one of his hands and stretched the other out to resume messing with his hair. Virgil relaxed into the new position after a few minutes of reading, eyes shutting as he enjoyed the attention. His eyes would flicker open every time Patton moved to show him a picture, but other than that, he seemed content to not move.
Eventually, he stopped responding when Patton moved to show him the pictures.
âAre you asleep?â he asked quietly. When he didnât get a response, he bookmarked the last picture Virgil had responded to, and then continued reading to himself.
Eventually, there was a knock at the door. It was the one he and Logan had decided on to tell the other one that it was just them and not to panic when the door opened. The door opened to Logan a moment later.
He paused, taking in the sight of the assassin sprawled across Pattonâs lap like a sleepy kitten. He shook his head fondly and walked over to them on silent feet. He bent and pressed a hand to the top of Virgilâs hand. Virgil stirred just barely, but didnât open his eyes, pressing into the touch a bit.
Logan smiled. âHe wanted to learn how to make protection charms today. I assume youâd like to join us?â Patton perked up and nodded happily, making Logan chuckle softly. âI will go set it up then. Would you like another book for the time being?â
âJust the one I was reading last night would be nice,â Patton said.
âOf course.â Logan stepped away to grab it and handed it to him. Then, he disappeared into his potionâs lab. Patton smiled down at Virgilâs sleeping face and settled the new book onto his chest to replace the childrenâs book. He didnât even stir.
Chapter 13
Logan was able to quickly set up the station for making protection charms. Patton had always liked making them, though he often used his more as fun accessories than for protection. The one he was going to show Virgil how to make was a very simple low level one used for little more than to keep bugs off of yourself and, in the event of a well made one, alert one to imminent danger by changing temperature. It was a nice thing to hold in the middle of the night if one was frightened by real or imagined threats. It would be warm to the touch when your environment was safe; he thought Virgil might appreciate it.
He and Patton decided to wait until Virgil woke up naturally which only took about 30 minutes. Then, Logan brought him to his set up supplies. He explained briefly the process for making a protection charm. âI will be the one performing the enchantment for today,â he told Virgil. âI will show you how to make your own later, but I thought seeing how to make them would help with the learning process.â
âPlus, itâs fun!â Patton said.
Logan flashed a smile at him. âAnd that as well. Iâve prepared a small number of possible pendants for you to choose from. You can choose the shape and color, then we will put on a custom engraving, as well as decorations.â
âGlitter! Glitter! Glitter! Glitter!â
âYes, Patton, everyone knows youâre going to choose glitter,â Logan said, amused, âbut why donât we let Virgil decide for his own pendant?â
âFine,â Patton said, âbut mine will be glitter.â
Logan grabbed the box of blank pendants and offered it to Virgil. âChoose whichever one feels right,â he suggested. Virgil moved forward and looked over the box. âYou can touch them,â Logan said. âIn fact, I would suggest it as it is meant to be held when itâs done and you may as well get a feel for it.â
At his prompting, Virgil did. He reached into the box and shifted a few to the side. Eventually, he started picking a few up. âI like the crescent shape for holding the most he said,â holding a blue one up, but I donât know.â
âWhatâs your favorite color?â Patton asked.
âOh, um,â he mumbled. âI dunno.â
âWell here,â Patton said, reaching for the box. He dug through it and pulled out every single crescent moon shaped pendant and lined them up. âWhat do you fancy?â
Virgil considered them all for a long moment and then tentatively pointed the purple one out.
âGreat!â Patton said. âThen, weâll use that one.â
Virgil nodded and Patton picked up the pendant to drop it into his hands. His fingers curled over the shape and he seemed satisfied by the choice, so Logan turned to Patton. âYour turn,â he said.
Patton happily grabbed out a heart shaped blue one, but then paused and exchanged it for a purple one. âWe match!â he said.
Virgil smiled slightly at his enthusiasm, and Logan dug out a blue crescent moon shape for himself. âNow that you have your base, you get to choose the engraving.â He opened up the instruction book to the correct page and showed it to him.
Virgil looked over the two pages of designs with carful focus. He wavered between the spiral sun and the flames for a moment, but eventually settled on the flames. Patton chose the interlocking hearts design as anticipated; it was his favorite, and Logan chose the spiral sun design for himself.
âNow, Iâm going to engrave this design onto yours,â Logan said getting out the thin pen like instrument and dipping it into the slightly glowing bottle of potion heâd set out. âIn the meantime, Patton will show you what we have for decorations.â
He was careful to get the symbol as perfect as he could and then started on Pattonâs. Patton apparently managed to corrupt the boy because both of them came back with brushes and glitter to add as decoration.
Logan shook his head and handed them their freshly engraved pendants. âApply the glitter how you like,â Logan said, moving on to his own engraving. Once he was finished, he selected some glow in the dark paint to decorate his own.
Once heâd finished decorating his own pendant, Logan looked up. âAre you finished?â he asked.
âYep!â Patton said, shoving his pendant at Logan while Virgil nodded. Virgil had been far less enthusiastic than Patton, having carefully brushed glitter into the flame design only whereas Patton had haphazardly covered his own all over with glitter. Logan took both pendants.
âThis,â Logan said, bringing over a different potion, âis used to make sure the decorations never fall off. It basically allows the other substances to become a part of the stone. âIt isnât too dangerous, but Iâd suggest you stand back for the moment.â
Virgil stepped back farther back than was strictly necessary and gave the potion bottle a wary look. Logan moved all three pendants to the prepared surface (else they ran the risk of also getting stuck to the table) and put on gloves, having learned that magically gluing rocks to ones hands was not fun years ago. Then, he carefully drizzled a bit of the potion onto each rock. The rocks fizzled loudly, and Virgil gave off a startled yelp before toppling over flat on his face with his wrist glued to his sides.
âOh no, honey,â Patton said immediately crouching next to him. âIâm sorry. We should have warned you about the noise.â
Logan wasnât sure what type of action heâd tried to take when the sound started up, but whatever it was, it had caused him to move his arms fast enough that heâd activated the binding potion and it snapped his wrists to his side, overbalancing him.
Pattonâs hands hovered over the startled boy, but he didnât touch. After a few moments, it was clear that the magic keeping Virgilâs hands at his side released because his hands slowly crept forward to push himself up, so his face wasnât planted against the ground. His eyes still looked incredibly startled.
âAre you alright?â Patton asked.
Virgil blinked. âYeah, Iâm fine,â he said.
Logan took his words as permission to move without risking startling him more. Virgilâs eyes bopped back and forth between him and Patton a few times as he crossed to his wall of potions and grabbed one.
He also selected a clean cloth from a basket on his way over to them. âA light healing potion,â Logan explained as he knelt in front of Virgil. He uncorked it. âMay I?â
âIâm fine,â Virgil said with a frown. âIâm not even bleeding. Itâs barely anything.â
âWhich is why itâs a light healing potion,â Logan said. âYou are sure to bruise with the way you hit. This will prevent it and make it stop hurting.â
âOkay,â Virgil agreed after a moment. Logan dribbled a bit out onto the rag. After a moment of thought, he touched the damp part of the cloth with his own finger, just to quash any fears that it would harm him.
âIt will tingle slightly,â Logan warned. Virgil tilted his face to let him dab it onto his nose and the light scrape on his face. His nose scrunched up and he moved to rub the sensation away quickly only to have his arms slam back to his sides.
Patton caught him so the sudden involuntary movement didnât cause him to fall back, and then giggled when Virgil titled his head to what could only be described as pout back at him.
âAw, poor thing,â Patton cooed, reaching forward to rub a hand across the top of his nose and then his forehead where the potion had been applied for him.
âBetter?â Patton asked.
âYouâre really bad at this being captors thing,â Virgil commenting, willingly leaning back into Patton. Patton just smiled happily.
Logan took the bottle and got to his feet, before returning it, and then glanced at the pendants as Patton helped Virgil to his feet. The pendants had stopped fizzing, so Logan felt okay reaching in and grabbing them all.
He handed both Patton and Virgil their pendants when they walked closer to the table.
âAnd now for the actual enchantment,â Logan said. âFor today, I already prepared the potion up to the last step as it has to sit for a few hours, but I will show you the last step and eventually teach you everything if you are still interested.â
Virgil nodded, but said. âNo more noises?â
Logan smiled. âNo more noises,â he confirmed. Then he pushed forward all of the ingredients he was about to put in the pot for Virgil to study one by one before putting them each in it in the correct order. Then he demonstrated how to stir it correctly and told him how many times, though he doubted heâd be able to retain all of the information from this one demonstration. âThere,â he said, setting down his spoon. âNow we just all put our pendants into the pot, and they should be ready in 25 minutes.â
Logan showed Virgil around his potionâs lab while they waited, explaining what certain pieces of equipment did and a bit about his organization system. Virgil followed him around, looking at the things he pointed out curiously. He, however, got very distracted when Logan showed him one of the experiments heâd concocted. It was a thick liquid that was super attracted to itself and would form a small ball that could be disturbed by touching it. He seemed to like the sensation of squishing it down onto a table⌠over and over and over again.
âWe should get him a ball of yarn,â Patton said out of the corner of his mouth. He may have been enjoying watching Virgil play with the substance more than Virgil was enjoying playing with it himself. And that was saying something.

Eventually, however, the pendants were finished, and he dragged Virgil away from his new toy to show him the finished product.
âWhat do you think?â he asked.
âIs it supposed to be warm?â Virgil inquired.
âYes,â Logan replied. âItâs temperature changes based on if the magic on it senses a threat or not. Warmer temperatures mean you are safe.
âOh,â Virgil said softly, hand squeezing around it. âI like it.â
Logan found himself smiling. âIâm glad. Itâs yours.â
âThank you,â he said.
âIf you would like, Iâm sure Patton has some suggestions if youâd desire a way to keep it attached to your person. He in particular likes to make them into necklaces or clip them to his clothing.â
Virgil looked over at Patton and nodded shyly. Patton immediately perked up. âIâll go get some supplies!â he said.
Chapter 14
âSo then,â Patton was saying. âWe ran to the stables.â
âWe went to gazebo first,â Logan cut in.
âRight, we tried to go to the gazebo first,â Patton corrected, âbut Mr. Deknis was over there tending to the tomatoes, and we knew heâd tell Mama the second he saw us. So, then we turned around and went to the stables.â
Virgil tilted his head, listening to the story Patton was telling. Patton was not the best storyteller. He tended to get lost in the middle and embellish, though Logan always corrected him. It was still very entertaining to watch though because he got incredibly animated. Heâd even toppled himself over in excitement a couple of times.
Virgil squeezed the small pillow he had in his lap. He⌠wasnât 100% sure what was going on. Logan and Patton had settled him on the blanket covered ground near Loganâs bed and proceeded to feed him snacks and talk about a lot of different things. It had started with them talking about what theyâd done that day, and when Patton had made reference to something Virgil hadnât understood, the two of them ended up talking about things from their childhood.
Virgil found himself entranced by their stories about playing in and running around the castle. It was all so different from what Virgil had experienced.
ââŚbut, right as we were about to get to the ladder to climb up into the hay loft, Logan tripped!â Patton said, arms whipping around him. âHe fell into a container of grain for the horses and it spilled all over the place. He tried to get up but grabbed the edge of the water trough and apparently it wasnât very secure because it fell over and soaked him. So, then he was wet and covered in grain. He looked hilarious.â
âI did not!â Logan protested, but it did not sound like all of the other times heâd corrected Pattonâs stories that night.
Patton looked over at him. âYou did! You woke up the cute stable hand and he laughed himself silly at you, and by the time we got you even partially cleaned up, your dad had already found us. Thatâs how we got caught.â
âI have no recollection of these events,â Logan clearly lied, his cheeks a bit flushed.
âLiar,â Patton claimed. âYou complained about picking grain out of your sheets for weeks.â
âNo,â Logan growled.
âYes! Itâs okay. It was a good laugh.â
Loganâs eyes narrowed on him, and he looked pissed, but a second later, his expression lightened up. âYou know what else was a âgood laughâ?â he asked.
There was a second of silence beforeâŚ
âDonât you dare Logan.â
Logan looked him directly in the eye. âPatton was thirteen,â Logan started, but was interrupted the next moment when Patton lobbed a pillow at his head. Logan grabbed the pillow and leaned forward to smack Patton back with it. âHe was thirteen and had just âdiscovered boysâ as his mother and my father called it when they attempted to explain his behavior to me. The focus of said âdiscoveringâ at the time was the son of an ambassador from Lamirâ who was staying for the summer, a seventeen-year-old boy by the name Bernardo.â
Virgil flinched back as Patton suddenly threw himself across the semicircle theyâd made with their bodies to tackle Logan to the ground. He watched as they ineffectually wrestled on the ground for a few seconds before Logan, voice strained continued to speak, while battling Pattonâs hands away from his mouth.
âPattonâs only knowledge about flirting⌠ow⌠at that point was laughing at everything someone said and touching their arms and shoulders.â Logan managed to flip himself onto his stomach which was a horrible move as far as Virgil was concerned. It put him at a disadvantage to get out of the pin. However, Patton just kept reaching for his mouth and didnât bare down on his neck to try to cut off his oxygen like Virgil expected. So, perhaps it was a rational move. âOur parents were speaking leaving Patton, Bernardo, and I in the garden,â Logan mumbled into the ground. âBernardo said something âfunnyâ and Patton went to slap his shoulder while laughing, but shoved too hard⌠Patton did you just lick my face?!â
âAnd Iâll do it again if you donât shut up!â Patton threatened. That was a⌠weird fighting strategy.
Logan paused to consider his options. âHe shoved Bernardo into the fountain and when Bernardo asked him why he did that, he ran away and wouldnât talk to him the rest of the summer!â Logan rushed out.
Patton reached over and grabbed the nearest pillow, proceeding to whack him viciously in the back of the head. Logan was lucky the nearest object was a pillow and not something any sturdier. âItâs not funny!â Patton yelled, smacking him even more, which was when Virgil realized Logan was laughing despite the pinning and pillow pummeling. âItâs not!â Patton said. âI really liked him!!â
âHe was seventeen!â Logan said. âIt was never going to happen!â
Patton groaned and rolled off of Logan to lay on his back and stare at the ceiling. âBut he had so many muscles,â Patton said. âHe probably could have thrown me 10 yards.â
âAnd that is⌠a benefit?â Logan asked, rolling over onto his side to face him.
âYou donât. Get me.â Patton tilted his head to look at Virgil. âAnyway,â he said. âThat is the story of how I died at 13.â
Virgil stared at him, and Pattonâs forehead crinkled looking at him.
âIs something wrong, honey?â he asked.
âWhat was that?â Virgil asked.
âWhat was what?â
Virgil just blinked at him. Patton seemed to think for a moment.
âOh, did you think we were fighting?â Patton asked. âLike, really fighting?â
âYou werenât fighting?â Virgil asked.
âNo, sweetie,â Patton said. âWe were just playing.â He popped up into a sitting position. âWell, play fighting, but emphasis on play!â
Virgil looked over at Logan for confirmation. âNo one is harmed nor was there any intention to harm each other,â he assured.
Patton grabbed the pillow heâd been smacking Logan with. âLike this!â he said. âBap.â Unlike how heâd smacked Logan ruthlessly, he basically just touched Virgilâs shoulder with it.
Virgil squinted at him.
âBap!â Patton said again, smacking him again, this time with a little bit more force and on the cheek. Virgilâs nose scrunched up. âPillow fight!â
âPillow fight?â
âYou try,â he said, pointing to the pillow in Virgilâs lap.
Virgil glanced down at the bands around his wrist. âUmâŚâ he said. âI donât think I can?â
âOh, right,â Patton said with a frown. He bit his lip and glanced over at Logan. âMaybeâŚâ
âIll-advisable,â Logan said.
âButâŚâ Patton said. âPillow fight.â
âWe would have to be very cautious and make sure there were no weapons in the area.â
âNo weapons but pillows!â
âFine,â Logan relented to whatever was going on. âLetâs clear the area.â Virgil watched them with mounting confusion as they removed everything within a few meters radius of him except for pillows and blankets.
âThere!â Patton said after a minute. âAll done!â
âWhat are you doing?â Virgil said.
âWeâre going to have a pillow fight,â Patton said.
âBut IâŚâ
âWeâll temporarily allow your restraints to be in the third setting like when youâre in the closet.â
Were they serious? Were they stupid? Virgil could have killed them dozens of times with the second setting and now they were giving him even more range of motion?
âYou have to promise not to try to hurt anyone though,â Patton said. Virgil stared at him dumbly, as Patton held out his pinky finger. âPinky promise.â
âPinky promise?â
Patton nodded solemnly. âWe lock pinky fingers and make a promise. Itâs the most binding promise in the universe.â
Virgil looked at his finger, confused. Heâd never heard of that type of deal. âWhat kind of magic is it?â
âNo magic,â Patton said. âJust friendship.â Virgil tilted his head but brought his hand up so Patton could twine their fingers together. âNow, promise you wonât hurt anyone.â
âI promise I wonât hurt anyone,â he said.
âItâs a deal!â said Patton, squeezing Virgilâs finger with his own briefly before drawing away. âI trust you.â Virgil felt a rush of something that was no type of magic heâd ever come into contact before but was definitely far more powerful.
Logan came over to them and waved his hand over the restraints on Virgil. They buzzed slightly and Virgil looked between them. âSo, I just hit you with pillows?â
âTry not to hit too hard near the face, and Lo and I should probably take off our glasses before we start, but yeah,â Patton said, taking his glasses off as he said it. It was yet another foolish move on his part. âItâs fun, and it doesnât hurt.â
âOkayâŚâ Virgil said.
âI will demonstrate,â Logan said as he took a pillow and smacked Patton in the stomach.
âHey! No fair!â Patton giggled. âWe havenât started yet!â This did not deter Logan however, as he continued to smack Patton with a pillow.
âOn the contrary,â he said. âIt has started, and weâre getting you first.â
âNo,â Patton whined, but the way he crumpled to the ground under the onslaught seemed far too staged to make Virgil worry. He didnât even try to curl up into a ball or to protect his head, just taking the hits and giggling.
Logan looked up at Virgil and motioned with his head. Virgil inched over and looked down at Patton. Logan slowed for a few moments. âGo on,â he urged.
Virgil bit his lip and reached forward to smack Patton lightly with his pillow which seemed to do nothing to him but renew his peels of giggles. From there, it was easy to continue. Logan picked up the pace of his strikes and he and Virgil proceeded to âfightâ Patton until he couldnât breath through his laughter and pushed the pillows away, curling up on his side to recover.

âNo what?â Virgil asked when Patton sat up.
âNow I get vengeance!â Patton said, popping to his feet and smacking Logan in the face. âHelp me Virgil!â So, Virgil turned on Logan and he and Patton gave the prince the same treatment. Then, because it was only fair, it was Virgilâs turn, though they were a lot more careful with him then theyâd been with each other, and really Patton spent more of the time checking in on Virgil then actually hitting him with the pillow. It was nice. Fun. And when Virgil pushed them away, they pulled back. Then, it was Pattonâs turn again and they went around teaming up on each other and sometimes just smacking at each other at random.
Eventually, they slowed, and all ended up laying near each other on the floor.
âWell, that made me hungry,â Patton said, sitting up and stretching. âI asked Mama to make us a bunch of mini sandwiches with different flavors. Iâll go get them.â
He hopped to his feet to walk over to where theyâd stored the food earlier in those little glowing magical balls Logan had for food preservation.
Logan and Virgil sat up too, and Virgil offered him his wrists.
âRight,â Logan said with a blink. He made a motion and Virgil could feel the magic weighing down his hands once again. Heâd almost forgotten, Virgil thought with an internal sigh. Theyâd given an assassin free range of motion, had a pillow fight with him, and almost forgotten to restrain him again. What was Virgil going to do with these idiots?
Chapter 15
Patton strolled up to the doors to the royal wing, his arms crossed casually around his middle.
Kalani raised an eyebrow as he approached and gave her the most innocent expression he could. âWhatcha got there, Pat?â she asked.
âHmm?â he asked, as his sweater squirmed. âWhat do you mean?â
She considered him for a moment. âWell, I see nothing suspicious here,â she said. âDo you Owen?â
âNothing,â he replied without hesitation.
Patton grinned at them both.
Kalani leaned in like she was going to tell him a secret. âWho is it?â
Patton made a show of glanced around like he was hiding it from anyone passing by. Then he shifted around to pull up just the bottom of his sweater.
A small black paw reached out from the depths of his sweater and swatted at the air.
âAh, I see,â Kalani said, reaching out to touch the little paw. âHello, Mittens.â
Patton giggled as Owen poked the catâs stomach gently through the sweater, making her wiggle a bit and try to bite him.
âWell,â Patton said. âI better be off with my totally normal sweater.â
Kalani nodded and stepped to the side, and Patton was free to head down the hallway to Loganâs room. Patton knocked on the door with their new extra secret knock and Logan all but ripped open the door. âIâm late. I have to go,â he said, darting past Patton.
Patton smiled, happy that his plan to be running a little late to come watch Virgil had worked so well, even though he felt a little bit guilty about it. He hoped Logan wasnât late to his meeting, but he also knew that if Logan had noticed Mittens, he wouldnât have let her into the room.
Virgil was already out of the closet, sitting on one of the chairs. Patton came in and smiled at him. Unlike Logan, Virgilâs attention was immediately drawn to the oddly shaped lump in Pattonâs sweater.
âYouâre not very good at hiding things,â Virgil said.
âIt worked on Logan,â Patton defended himself.
âLogan was about to rocket into space if you didnât show up in 5 seconds,â Virgil pointed out. Patton just shrugged, and Virgil tilted his head. âWhat do you have?â
Patton grinned wide and carefully pulled Mittens out of his sweater. She did not resist this maneuver at all, simply purring. He held her up for Virgil to see. âTa da!â
âA cat?â Virgil said.
âThis is Mittens,â Patton said. He then turned to Mittens. âMittens, this is Virgil. I thought Iâd introduce the two of you!â
Virgil blinked at the cat. Mittens blinked back. Patton thought maybe he should have let them sniff each other from under a door before doing this.
He didnât need to worry though, as Mittens started purring after a moment. âYou can pet her,â Patton offered. Virgil looked up at him. âJustâŚâ he said.
âShe likes chin scratchies!â Patton prompted.
Virgil reached out a hand to scratch under her chin and that was the end of it. Mittens stretched out her chin happy to get the attention and Virgilâs eyes widened at how soft her fur was. It was a work of minutes before Virgil was sitting down on the floor and Mittens was happily kneading his thighs and spinning around in circles to make sure he pet every inch of her.
âI did not understand why people like cats,â Virgil commented. âAll Iâve seen of cats is people coming back with bloody scratches from trying to pet them, so I never even tried.â
âWell,â Patton said. âCats are just like people. If youâre nice to them, theyâre more likely to be nice to you.â
Virgilâs hand paused briefly on the catâs head, but then continued with the petting a moment later. Patton wondered what he was thinking about, but didnât press.
âShe seems to like you,â Patton said.
âDonât know why.â
âHey, donât be mean.â Patton scolded.
Virgil hands jerked away from the cat heâd been petting and then were forced abruptly to his side in reaction. Mittens meowed, seemed very unhappy with the jostling as well as the sudden lack of petting.
âSorry,â Virgil said, eyes wide. âWhat did I do wrong. I didnât mean to be mean to her.â
It took Patton a moment to sus out what he was talking about and felt a pang in his chest when he did. âOh, no honey. You didnât do anything wrong. I meant donât be mean to yourself.â
Virgil gave him a confused look. Mittens bumped her head against his chin and with a blink, he cautiously went back to petting her.
âOf course, she likes you sweetie, youâre a good boy.â
âI came here to kill the king. Iâve killed before.â
Patton smiled sadly. âI donât think you ever wanted to,â he said. Virgil seemed to grow very interested in mittenâs ears. Patton scooted over so he was sitting beside him and carefully brought a hand up to touch the top of his head. Virgil sort of curled into him, pressing his face against Pattonâs shoulder, but continuing to pet the cat.
âItâs fine. Youâre going to be okay now,â Patton said softly.
Virgil shook his head against Pattonâs shoulder.
âYes,â Patton insisted. âYouâll be okay. You wonât have to go back.â
Virgil didnât respond for a long moment. âYou canât keep me in Loganâs closet forever,â he said softly. âWhen his dad comes back, youâre going to have to turn me in.â
Well, that was true, but⌠âItâll be okay. No one will hurt you.â
âThe kings would be assassin?â Virgil asked skeptically.
âThomas is nice. Heâll understand.â
âHeâs nice to you. Heâs nice to Logan. Maybe heâs even nice to the people he rules over, but what am I? An enemy assassin who would have slit his throat if I hadnât gotten the wrong room.â
ItâŚit did sound bad when he put it like that, but, but⌠âThomas will understand,â he promised, hugging him tight. âHe will, and weâll keep you safe and Iâll introduce you to every single cat in the castle. In fact, weâll get you a cat to keep as a pet if you want and he or she can snuggle you as much as you want. Iâll show you all around the gardens and introduce you to Mama and help you figure out what your favorite type of cookie is. Youâll never have to hurt anyone again and no one will ever hurt you again.â
Virgil drew away a bit and shot him a half smile. He clearly didnât believe him, and it made Pattonâs stomach twist a bit. Patton knew. He knew Thomas would be nice. There was no way heâd hurt Virgil. Virgil was just a kid and with Logan and Patton on his side, there was no way anything bad would happen to him. He could see it from Virgilâs perspective though.
âI like her feet,â Virgil said, touching Mittensâ little black paw that contrasted her otherwise white coat. Mittens purred and began kneading his legs again with those paws. âIâm guessing thatâs why sheâs named Mittens?â
âYeah,â said Patton softly. ââCause she looks like sheâs wearing mittens.â Virgil leaned forward to kiss her little head and that little action made Pattonâs heart ache for him. He deserved so many kitten kisses. So many.
Patton was determined to make sure he got them.
