Simple but the idea hit me like a truck. I wrote some stuff about Deaf Layton & it's a bit shakey but the idea is there! I put it under the cut↙

Deaf Layton (HC.)

He is oralized, but fluent & relying on BSL. Deaf very young (prior to his adoption) due to an ear infection, severe but not profound (capable of hearing certain sounds). Uses a portable hearing device in certain cases, similar to transistor body hearing aids, worn on the chest with shoulder straps (maybe with an old time-y fantasy twist). Has little to no trouble lip-reading. He is against using his voice in most cases. Successful archaeology professor at Gressenheller University, he teaches in sign language with the company of an interpreter.

— Luke is his enthusiastic voluntary interpreter, met after his involvement in solving the specter case in Misthallery. He is hearing but fluent in BSL, raised on it by Clark & Brenda, who is deaf herself. Marveled by his manners & his way in solving mysteries, he insists on tagging along to his adventures as his makeshift sign language interpreter. Layton agrees on some unknown basis, since it is known that Luke’s interpreting job is a bit odd.

— Emmy learns about BSL after her run-in with the professor in an attempt to connect with him & assist him in his scholarly & investigative duties.

— Descolé is knowledgeable in BSL. His accent has an intense, dramatic quality to it, making it a bit funny & strange. His signing is tailored for Layton to see.

— Flora doesn’t know a lot of BSL, leaving her to be a bit left out of conversations. She learns a few basics, enough to attempt to establish a connection with Layton & Luke.

― Claire didn’t know BSL , but she learned bit by bit with Layton’s guidance. Together , unintentionally, they create a system combining gestures & words, similar to a home sign or pidgin. Layton is comfortable speaking to her.

(oh and just to note: I stayed away from conditions with obvious facial / appearance difference as no actors with facial / appearance difference were cast in the show and I was unsure if it would be appropriate. while I have experience with a lot of the following diagnoses, I do not claim to be an expert on any of them and do not intend for this to be used as a diagnostic tool. if you feel any of these are offensive/inappropriate, please message me and I’m happy to talk about it :) this is more just to encourage broader disability representation within the fandom!)

Edwin: autistic, PTSD (from hell), chronic pain/fibromyalgia (from his death/hell), minor visual impairment (not enough to need the hard-to-come-by testing needed for glasses when he was alive and so assumed the various limits/effects were normal. was told otherwise by Niko), would’ve had shingles if lived long enough

Charles: ADHD, PTSD (from his father/growing up in an abusive household), dyslexia, Reynaud’s syndrome (either already born with it or as a result of his death—both angsty), was in the beginning stages of an ED prior to his death, post-concussion syndrome, near-sightedness (never given glasses bc he wasn’t about to tell his dad the board looked a little blurry sometimes)

Crystal: cPTSD (reminder that neglect is also abuse :), bipolar 1, IBS, endometriosis

Niko: autism, depression, POTS, hEDS, anxiety, sprite-induced agoraphobia, epilepsy, lactose intolerance

Monty: Depersonalization-derealization disorder, selective amnesia (this is not the first times Esther has messed with his form/killed and revived him, but the experience is traumatic and so his brain decides not to remember it), recurrent arrhythmia, synesthesia

Jenny: OCD, BPD, ED recovered, Celiac’s disease, diabetes type 1, anemia

TCK: autism, NPD, lactose intolerance, colourblind

Esther: chronic pain (I’m choosing to believe that the cane isn’t just for show!!), NPD, endometriosis

Tragic Mick: cPTSD, depression, HoH, arthritis, diabetes

Even on Saturdays and Sundays, I don't get to rest. Is it because you're not good at your job and slow? So you have to work at home? So you don't have balance in life. What was something that super surprised you had a smell? I just found out glass and plastic have scents and I am very confused by the concept.

Eyyyyyy you and me! Noseblind to the world! My reason (fell into coffee table while learning to walk and smashed nose) is my assumption, but it could also be it just never developed right (I'm a preemie twin). I have so many questions, I never meet fellow congenital anosmics.

Do people always ask you "oh, so you can't taste anything?" and then you have to go through the whole "No I can taste, my tongue works fine, but I don't get flavors so it's probably a different experience than you but works for me blah blah blah"?

Did you know right away you couldn't smell? It's such an abstract sense, it took literally years for us to figure out that there was nothing happening for me. I took an official smell-test early college, (if you haven't done one it's a glorified scratch-n-sniff and you mark what you think the scent is from 4 options), and scored a solid 11/40! Failure babeyyy!

Can you smell mint? That's like the one thing I get, and it's cool science because it's not the olfactory nerve that's triggered (because its Broken), it's the trigeminal nerve reacting to the menthol in mint! Ammonia also triggers it, which is good for my job where I work with ammonia but it absolutely takes higher concentrations for me to be able to sense it vs anyone with a functional nose.

Glass has a smell???? Plastic makes sense to me, all the chemicals, but glass? Beyond "food was in here and made it stinky"? Someone with a sense of smell please confirm and explain.

I'm so confused by how smell works. I didn't realize you can smell restaurants from outside of the restaurant until I was in college and driving with a roommate and she made a comment about smelling a restaurant as we drove past. Blew my mind. Every once in a while I remember that people can smell what I'm cooking? Baking is not a secret thing you can do? It is a secret thing you can do from me - my old roommate would bake all the time and the other roommates enjoyed that they 'd all comment "oh, you baked!" as they walked through the front door but I wouldn't comment or know about it until I got to the kitchen and saw the baked good. How long does that smell linger? How far does it permeate? The thing I literally learned last night, which is slightly upsetting, is that smells can get through latex gloves. I work with dead animals for my job cleaning skeletons for museums, and my friend was complaining that his hands still smelled like dead mustelid after prepping a mink that afternoon, and I was like "Weren't you wearing gloves?" and he was like "yeah, but they're really stinky, they get through" and I'm just. I'm still shook about that. How. There are gloves. I get clothes and hair smelling from smells, but your hands??? Even with glove???? I don't get it.

I’ve been stuck on my slightly more serious sexswapped Jean fic for a while and it’s kind of a shame since writing it has really helped me with some things. I wanted to pair her up with Ace (who turned himself into a chick for one orgasm but can’t do it and is stuck that way) for laughs but couldn’t think of anything interesting to DO. But now I actually have a pretty interesting idea of them both kind of losing their purpose in music since Jean can’t use it as an easy pussy magnet and Ace doesn’t have the guitar as a dick extension thing anymore. They get together and kind of have a jam session trying to find their groove and purpose again. Honestly it’s based on how I liked the idea of guitar but never committed to it because there is such a sexual expectation with it and I’m just… not that at all irl. Might give me a reason to noodle around a bit after years of doing nothing to find some idea of how to write it
