Billy’s had a bad night, and Steve looks at him with a look of pity.

Billy doesn’t like that he can’t leave and go to the beach to think anymore. He doesn’t like that his dad’s on him about taking Max wherever she pleases. There’s no calmness surrounding him anymore.

So when he shows up at Steve’s house at 5 am, clearly not in a mood to talk, Steve just pats his shoulder and tells him, “C’mon.”

They get in Steve’s car in silence. No music, no talking, no drinks or cigarettes.

But Steve rolls the windows down and pulls out of his driveway. Billy looks out the open window, clearly exhausted and a little pissed he’s not in charge of driving.

The sun hasn’t risen yet, but Steve knows what time it does; 5:35 am.

They take the long backroads, letting the breeze blow through their hair. Steve thumps a small beat on the wheel. Billy’s got his arms crossed, leaning further back in the passenger seat, ready to take a nap.

But the sky is turning a light purple, and the stars are disappearing. Billy’s eyes widen when he notices the area around them is flooded with empty fields and tractors waiting for their farmers.

Steve looks over at him and smiles, but he doesn’t dare let Billy see this.

He pulls over on the side of the road where the trees are no longer blocking the 100-mile view of the Midwest.

The sun is peaking over the field, it feels like, trying to say, “Hello.” Steve hops out and waits for Billy to do the same, and Billy does. They both lean on the passenger door and watch the sky become a pink-ish orange to a light blue.

Steve’s admiring the view he found one grateful night when he couldn’t sleep; the demodog yelps and his friends’ screams becoming too loud. But he’s also giddy over the awe Billy has on his face.

The pink glow etches his cheeks like he’s blushing, mouth draped open in a shock that anything could be this beautiful.

It’s a long 10 minutes before Steve jumps at Billy’s first words he’s said in an hour:

“Wow.”

Steve chuckles and nods, kicking at the ground. “Yep.”
