i think the urge to find “mutual” abuse shows a fundamental misunderstanding of what power dynamics even look like lol theyre just discomfitted theres near zero openings for them to make a black male character out to be be a big brute and self insert into the fictional man of no color. louis is a master of language, and he never actually says ‘i love u, lestat’. people fixate on it for the wrong reasons, or misinterpret ppl pointing the fact that louis never said those 3-4 words as some false attempt at looking for “mutual abuse”.

louis is not withholding, but trying to claim some semblance of power thru his mastery of language. like @lynnenne said:

The Morality of Fandom Activities

This might as well be an essay, so apologies for my long asf post. Just a few heads up: this is in no way talking about people who support incest irl and MAPS. Those are extreme cases that I'm not qualified myself to talk about, I only know that I don't want them on my page 😭

I stopped having a very active social media presence when I was finishing high school. For me, this was a huge deal, because as the token weird queer kid all my life, Tumblr and fandom culture provided a safe space for self-expression, developing my writing skills and exploring myself. Fandoms usually play a huge role for teens, since their interactions and their experiences shape their mindsets into the primary form their adult brain takes. Whenever I look at my old posts, I can see the points where I was maturing, I could see my opinions change very clearly without always connecting old posts to significant life events.

What is very important to take into account is that I was in ALL the "red flag" fandoms, even some niche ones. BNHA, Homestuck, RWBY, Okegom, Voltron, you name it. I was into it, I had Instagram edits of it saved on my phone. As a result, I am familiar with all kinds of fujoshi, yuri bros, proshippers, etc. I'm not here to inform you about my entire digital footprint though. I'm here to discuss fandom morality. Fair warning, I will be referring to a bunch of dark themes vaguely.

I want to start by saying I understand the appeal of a toxic ship. A ship that is straight-up problematic given the context of the story. Be it because the characters are abusive to each other, a very big age gap or them being blood relatives - I get it, even if I'm one of the people who's easily repelled by this shit. I get why Junjou Romantica, for example, became so popular. The big body proportions, the "forbidden romance" trope, the guilty pleasure, I get it. I understand how nerdy young women would fawn over yaoi because they craved a soft male touch. I understand the south park proshippers because they inserted their younger selves into the characters and imagined scenarios where their own fucked-up childhoods would make sense.

My experience with Funamusea helped me understand that things that are taboo can be appealing in a fictional form. There were a lot of issues because the horror used in Funa's games was centered around sexual battery and assault. To me, that made perfect sense. Funa games are packed to the brim with gore, war, mental abuse, and disturbing characters. Of course, there would be SA in such a fucked up setting. Rape is a horrifying thing that no one should face because it is a subcategory of violence. VIOLENCE IS SOMETHING NO ONE SHOULD EVER COME ACROSS. Therefore, why is it that people who write stories containing this trope receive so much hate, but 1940s war aus for example get praised? Why is FMA a pacifist masterpiece and not torture porn?

For "glorifying" real-life horrors? Triggering people? Let's broaden this.

Think of your favorite slasher film. Your favorite best-seller horror book. Do you think that the people behind these stories are freaks and murderers? Psychopaths are capable of fitting in anywhere they want, even fucking churches. So it is useless to assume creators are moral instigators for their VILLAINS. Now let's think about Colleen Hoover and Sara J Maas (or as I like to call her, Sara J Ass). Their "love" stories are super popular because of the immense marketing that they have received, despite profiting off romanticized harmful content. Backlash is still minimized in contrast to anime niche, because they are backed by million-dollar industries and the fact that they conform to the norms of a straight story. Although that, is a topic for another discussion - how problematic characteristics are "musts" in irl relationships.

Lastly, I want to talk about the so-called community saviors who want to protect these platforms. Those who want to build a safe environment so that no predators infiltrate our sacred grounds where we discuss Persona 5 ABO dynamics. A lot of them are oftentimes victims of this sort of abuse. I myself have come across groomers. But tbh 15yo kids who reblog Shiro X Keith are not really the enemy? Anyway, that's a little besides the point. I want to directly talk to these people right now, hear me out: you are hypocrites. You only pretend to care about Tumblr communities but do not hesitate to accuse someone of abuse (any kind) and tell them to end their life. How are you protecting anyone like this? How are you a positive role model for the children partaking in fandom activities when you show clearly that you wish death upon someone. VIOLENCE IS SOMETHING NO ONE SHOULD EVER COME ACROSS, I re-iterate and you possibly agree, but YOU ARE STILL VIOLENT, and justify it by being "virtuous". How are you any different from @\hivliving? Her actions will forever be engraved in her victims' heads, even if she was humiliated in the end. Then again, it would have been better for her to write a shitty low-quality fic about Hamilton having HIV or whatever the fuck, if looking up basic things about HIV was so difficult. After 7 years in & out of fandoms, there's one thing I'm fine with, and that's bad fics.

Ultimately there is so much more I want to say. I might cover this topic on my bestie and I's podcast sometime (soz it's in Greek). The bottom line here though is not about keeping a neutral stance on problematic media. It is to enjoy whatever the fuck you want just because it makes you happy. It is to differentiate what's a wolf in sheep's clothing from what's a sheep. It is to accept that kids will ALWAYS lie about their age to access all sorts of NSFW. God knows I did so. It is to recognize them and realize that their creators and fans are most likely not going to act out every bad thing that occurs in said story. YAY okay so my first oc is Marius (they/them or he/she, I haven’t decided yet. White[?], intersex polyam aroace, seems to be in their 40s, started off as a sona but is still a self insert), then we have Bonnie (she/her, aboriginal, bi polyam trans woman/sistergirl, seems to be in her 40s), and finally Edward (he/him, Indian and Dutch, polyam bi trans man, seems to be in his 40s)! Relationship wise, Marius is in a qpr with Bonnie and Edward, who are married.

Content warning for like violence and minor descriptions of gore and cannibalism and unhealthy relationships and (mcd) death and corpses!

So Marius is an Angel sent to earth (specifically Australia because hell yeah represent) to help the survivors of a major world wide nuclear destruction or attack. Marius soon learns that most survivors are vampires, who feel the affects of the radiation much slower. Marius eventually gets eaten and gutted and killed by a group of vampires before being picked up by another group of vampires and taken to this shelter/institution where Bonnie and Edward work together to bring Marius back to life.

Also worth mentioning that Marius had known and helped Bonnie back when she was still alive/not a vampire with like science shit and also before bonnie dug up Edward and brought him back to life (Bonnie did this in the 1970s and Edward had died in the 1940s)

So Marius is brought back wrong (used to be really happy and cheerful and shit but is now really angry and aggressive but still loving. I’m pushing all my aggression and possible npd/bpd traits into them it’s great) and is now an atypical vampire (since they were just given vampire body parts that corrupted the rest of their body instead of being sired)

Marius struggles with like religious guilt and shit as well as new feeling of decay

At this point I should also share the vampires in my worlds like idk shit.

Vampirism is more of a chronic illness. Most vampires are not sired, and are born with vampirism. Once they die of the symptoms (usually in their 40s-60s) they are now a vampire. Vampires are constantly going through the human decaying process at a slower rate to normal corpses, and don’t feel affects of other illnesses the same or at all. Every month or so they have to bury themselves in the ground to restart the decaying process and get their body back in shape. It can take longer depending on how far into the decaying process their were. Also they have to do this if they are badly injured. They will fully decay and not be able to be brought back (unless I guess bonnie the mad scientist she is brings them back) if they don’t bury themselves.

So anyways Marius doesn’t know how to show their love for Bonnie and Edward, and is also being visited by their Angel spouse (don’t know anything about them yet) so they are just having a rough time with those emotions and also just vampiric stuff. So marius thinks the best way to show their love is to cannibalise Bonnie and Edward. Keep in mind marius thinks this is a human kind of thing to do. This relationship actively hurts everyone involved but they do love each other very much so yay we love toxic yuri/yaoi 💪💪💪

There’s some stuff with the ending where basically marius’ Angel spouse comes and is upset and they argue about marius not loving them anymore and marius cannibalises them but that just kills them and then heaven is sent down to take marius back and punish them so they get Bonnie to kill them and never bury them again it’s pretty wild

FUCK okay edit I forgot to mention that the shelter/institute is a shelter for any vampire who wants to stay and for vampires to research the nuclear shit around them as well as general vampirism shit. Bonnie is just the token mad scientist but Edward is the leading librarian as well as Bonnie’s lab assistant. Bonnie is girlboss and Edward is loser husband <333

brother crab’s 2023 seasonals in review: summer

surprisingly easy to rank season for me, so i'll get right to it

anime of the season + runner-up for summer goes to...

undead girl murder farce and zom 100: zombie ni naru made ni shitai 100 no koto! nothing else even came close

i'm giving ugmf anime of the season because i personally vibed with it a lot (murder mysteries with a rakugo flair + arsene lupin trying to fuck the phantom of the opera in the background you really cannot go wrong) and also because zom100 has yet to release its last few episodes

zom100 is such a consistently solid show, though, that even without seeing the full cour i'm prepared to give it runner-up of the season. and it's honestly a strong contender for anime of the year. the first episode especially... i would rank it even higher than the first ep of oshi no ko tbh

lots of sequels this season as well!

horimiya, bleach, jjk, and bsd. some new snv came out this season as well but since i binged all that at once it doesn't really feel like a sequel to me

anyway easily sequel of the season goes to bleach, largely because of nostalgia won't deny that but also because it's just that fucking good

horimiya however was also an immense delight! gonna miss these wacky kids :')

quickfire thoughts on everything else:

watashi no shiawase na kekkon is the shoujo of the year, there's been a lot of cute stuff lately but nothing comes close to watakon

vending machine isekai was fine and occasionally funny, but kinda shocked it got a sequel announced already. worldbuilding was definitely the most interesting part and i hope we see more of it in s2

dekiru n eko way kyou mo yuuutsu was absolutely perfect, very fun and cute and soothing

okashi na tensei had a promising premise which it failed to lean into, there was little to no BAKING in this BAKING anime jfc

lv1 maou to one room yuusha seemed like your run of the mill shitty ecchi but actually it's NONBINARY OLD MAN YAOI?! and was kinda good. dumb, but fun

ai no idenshi was... well it was episodic which i like, generally, but it really. was not consistent. some good pieces, some not so good. some interesting, some not so interesting. main failing is it really did not imo balance its 'main' plot with its mini-stories well at all

ayaka was fun! it doesn't really hold a candle to k project like at all but at least it was not as bad as praeter lmao

synduality noir (first cour) was alright. nothing to write home about but a decent enough mecha. as far as anime that are game ads go... i'd say it's okay. a little more interesting than takt op to me, though not as visually stunning. and not as compelling as god eater

hyakushou kizoku was a tv short adapting arakawa hiromu's autobiographical farming manga and it was such a delight lol, especially fun if you're a fan of fma or silver spoon. explains so much about ed tbh

hi no tori: eden no sora was a 4-ep ona that i quite liked overall... ending was just so-so to me i guess

dark gathering isn't quite over still but it's fine as a horror that's heavy on the gore (gorror? is that a thing) actually. probably better than fine, it's just not my genre. some of the stories are definitely more gripping than others, but yeah solid horror overall and really good cast (yandere hanakana what could be better)

helck is also still going but has been really solid, way more enjoyable than i'd imagined. it has an 80s feel to it that i love

and last but certainly not least shuumatsu no valkyrie ii part 2 gives us GYARU FUCKBOI BUDDHA once again. what could be better lmao

As someone who hasn’t rlly played a BL game b4 do u think I’d still enjoy NTY

HMMM I’ve only played two routes out of four, so my advice is definitely incomplete!

That said… I think NTY is worth a read because it’s an interesting mystery/crime story and has really good characters!

However, it does contain standard bad yaoi conventions (like dubious consent/noncon) as well as general sexual wackiness, which may be uncomfortable, especially for those unaccustomed to BL as a genre. The protagonist likes to grope his male coworkers for fun, for example. But from the routes I’ve played, if you’re used to general yaoi fandom bullshit, you can probably handle it… I think!? The game is from 2013, which should give you a sense of how things are.

The other thing is that, as mentioned above, NTY is also a mystery/crime game, so it includes rather real-feeling dark content including drugs, violence, child abuse, and incest (not with the love interests)… off the top of my head.

Overall, I really like it! The characters are really a strong point and I feel that they’re written in a pretty realistic way. For example, because the love interests are all straight, not all of the routes end up in “romance”. (Though you do get to fuck. Multiple times even!) I think if you enjoy that sort of “more than friends, not quite lovers” relationship, you’ll enjoy NTY. The way the overarching plot is revealed was very gripping to me as well. You definitely need multiple playthroughs to understand the whole thing!

I think if you can handle yaoi bullshit and darker themes, you should definitely give it a try 🥰 If you’re not sure but still want to dip your toe in, I’d recommend “Lkyt.”, which is the third game from the same company! It is much more sombre in tone and has more explicit violence and gore (with visuals, though you can censor them via the settings), but importantly…! None of the noncon…! It also feels less dark somehow because it has a more fantastical setting. It’s also much shorter and simpler in gameplay!
