#ThoughtOfTheDay🍓 where Lan Wangji decide to leave his job and the city, to live in the countryside and become a farmer. Lan Wangji worked at Cloud Recesses Company for a decade now, but at time flew by and with a couple session with his therapist, he came to a conclusion; a life like this wouldn't make him happy. He needed change, and fresh air. He talked to Lan Xichen and to his Uncle, who at first were not convinced. But Lan Wangji looked for everything anyway; and a week later, he was on the train, on his way to his new life.

Lan Wangji was staying at Yiling's Bed and Breakfast for his first night. When he arrived, the view mesmerized him. There was a lot of trees, mountains far away, clouds above them, and the sound of river nearby. The water was so clear and shiny that the sun was reflecting on it. Everything felt amazing. Lan Wangji took a deep breath, and turned his gaze to his home for the night.

That's when he saw the most beautiful person he ever saw in his thirty years of life. Maybe this land was sacred, maybe this man was some God walking on earth to make the flowers bloom in this cold spring and help the commoners while declining receiving any kind of payment, because he was a good God and not some hypocrite one. Maybe Lan Wangji just caught a fever for being under the sun for a while now, without any hat or sunscreen.

It took only a couple of heartbeats and starry eyes that seemed to contain the whole universe in it, for him to realize.

Lan Wangji just fell in love.

I am mostly interested in fics with depressed Lan Zhan who refuses to speak to anyone and/or gives up on his duties afterwards and just wastes away in that cave (instead of whatever he was supposed to be doing during those three years). Wangxian is the weakest WWX dynamic. On god, even if I'm not fond of Yanli, they have very loving relationship where they are protective of each other and gentle with each other in a harsh world. I don't ship WWX/JC but their story and complicated love of someone you grow up with and care for deeply but clash constantly with is more interesting than anything wangxian ever had. Nie Huaisang and Wei Wuxian clicked together so naturally, they are chaotic and are similiarly not too interested in being up to rules. Jin Zixuan and WWX had a potential of going from enemies to partners in crime, to become family and have each other's backs but JZX was cut short and WWX never really cared afterwards either. WWX with the wens took time to build up but his YLLZ farmer era was one of the best WWX's in the story. Damn, even Lan Xichen who's always amused with WWX's temperament and secretly has a drink with wwx and is altogether looser with the rules while still being lawful matches with him way more than LWJ where there's... nothing. They were smashed together for convenience and we were suppossed to just go with it cause they are the two main characters. LWJ feels like he was just made so WWX has a "hot stoic top" to fuck him and the rest of the characters are actually build with the story and therefore feel more natural

Wangxian don't feel like they are in love, not in the way the fans make them out to be into some romantic picture perfect angsty deserved lovestory. LWJ's personal space is constantly disrespected, he's punished constantly for WWX's mistakes, he constantly needs to be the one to adjust to how WWX is instead of the other way around and after all that, LWJ doesn't really /know/ WWX so his attraction feels very idealized. WWX is the bad boy that goes against the rules and LWJ wishes he could be that (or with that) but it's almost a childish infatuation from their Gusu days that never evolved into something more mature. And WWX? I can't see how he'd like LWJ as anything more than in a physical sense. Even their obnoxious "Back then I wanted to sleep with you" confession scene is purely physical. He doesn't really know LWJ or respects him, LWJ is just a familiar face in a world that is against WWX and he's a hot body that likes him. LWJ is an easy score in a way, he's a safe option. And it'd be SO interesting if they went into that, but instead it's played like the only true love (dont forget, they are meant to be as the ONLY gay pairing in MDZS which I find insane when everyone else has more chemistry and in the end gets shat on so wangxian can fuck in a bush. I mean, LWJ leaves LXC to be depressed and alone after everything LXC stands for and did? Fucking ridiculous.)

It tries to "subvert" tropes but ends up being more stereotypical than anything. WWX was almost meant as this jock-y rebellious hotshot but instead we got a quirky twink, early 2000s shonen protagonist and every yaoi's Uke I've been seeing since like 2008. Are they suppossed to be different because the "stoic white-coded" one is not the bottom? Is the bar this low? If anything, this ornament top is the most usual top, let's be real, LWJ barely has personality or growth or focus, he's there to fuck WWX.

This is a petty reason but MXTX's "wangxian is the only gay couple" everyone else being implied straight as if to highlight just how real their love is that they are gay in time period where it's frowned upon, even though Yi City and 3zun combinations had more chemistry than anyone is. Annoying. And so is the "Don't ship them with anyone else and don't switch their dynamics" that fuels some of the most obnoxious people in the fandom to go after fanwork creators that do/like things differently.

All in all Wangxian is THE face of danmei, they are the most known even outside of danmei circles and they are extremely mediocry written for that. I mean, fuck, you put straight couple in their place and I guarantee no one would like it, it has the depth of a high school hormone-riddled couple who have different classes and "only" get to see each other during breaks and make out during lunch with others at the table, idk it's so fucking annoying to me when I know there were better options, when WWX had so many interesting dynamics that got shat on in favor of bland ass ship and I'm tired of having to like it/tolerate it just because it's gay.

hi! i always love your MDZS/CQL takes; can i ask what are the questions you think CQL is asking, as compared to MDZS?

I haven't actually revisited either canon in ages, which is making me nervous. what questions the novel is interested in can be pretty contentious all on its own! @mikkeneko has an excellent answer in the notes here which I reccomend to everyone. My own thoughts are honestly pretty scattered- I keep on deleting things and going hm, that's not quite right.

So, for the obvious-to-me example, people reasonably zero in on the creation of innocent doctors/radish farmers who Wen Ruohan is holding hostage. In CQL it's easy to infer that Wen Qing and Wen Ning are maybe the only cultivators and almost certainly the only combatants among the Wen remnants, and their status is much more ambiguous in the novel, which I personally think is asking, essentially, "and so what? were they wrong to run, when they had a chance? Do they deserve what Jin Guangshan will do to them if they go back? Aren't they just people, actually?" Whereas the question that CQL is asking is more to the effect of "What does Wen Qing owe these people, when she is their only defence? What is she entitled to do to save them, at other people's expense? If she fucks up that moral calculus, what then? Does it matter if she's personally fond of some of the outsiders who are going to get hurt? If one of them saved her brother? Later, this question will flip to what Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng, and the parallel to Jiang Cheng's situation in particular is, I think, genuinely pretty fun. You're giving up the Wen as soldiers who've laid down their arms in exchange for Wen Qing also grappling with leadership and the question of how many horrors she can stand to look the other way on to protect her own people. one reason I keep deleting so much is that a lot cql's changes were motivated at least in part by censorship, which I think we mostly share a general and justified distaste for! but I also think that within the bounds of that censorship the creative team put a lot of work into actually doing something interesting with those changes. Or, for another example- nieyao! There's a much greater emphasis on the nmj-jgy relationship, it's unambiguously very close and they are clearly extremely important to one another, and I think that's because the cql team has a lot to say about love, trust, power, and the ways those things interact, and that reflects back on all of the other relationships in play, including Wangxian. Almost every time, when CQL chooses change a relationship they make the characters in question closer- that's true for Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji, for Wen Qing and the Yunmeng contingent, for Zixuan and Mianmian, and Huaisang and Meng Yao. It's even true for Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian, who have a close and trusting relationship in first life! CQL puts a much greater emphasis on "all right, so you care, what next?" How do you choose someone and then choose to be good to them? What if there's a massive power disparity between you? What if you seriously disagree about your priorities and morals? How do you trust someone who's betrayed you? When is it a stupid choice to trust at all? How do you have faith that you know someone well enough for that trust to be meaningful?

for legal reasons i would like to specify that it's not that mdzs isn't interested in these problems. i do remember wangxian's literal trust fall. cql is asking these questions all the time about everyone. also for legal purposes i'm not suggesting that cql lwj and jc love each other. but! they establish a three month wartime partnership looking for wwx and then jc immediately drops him on wwx's say-so despite apparently having a positive enough opinion of him to tell wwx he thinks they should make up twice. lan wangji will later tell wwx he thinks he should loop jc in on the second flautist! these are people trying to navigate some kind of relationship/shared interest/community, as opposed to a hateful void. cql wants to say hey, how do you go about this? while I'm here and rambling cql also puts a lot of emphasis on wwx's connection to yunmeng and changes things up so instead of feeling alienated right before he leaves our last glimpse of him there is happily picking lotuses and playing with a kid! in both stories the narrative is asking who do you protect? who do you leave behind? can you ever get it back? but the angles are very different.

The first fanfic that I ever started and worked on. Happened because I watched “The Untamed” 17 times and was consumed with the need for more. So I wrote what I wanted to happen after the last episode  

The SongXiao arc came to me in a dream and I had to delete 5k of the story to write the scene by the campfire. Wei Wuxian’s tears on the little bag containing Xiao Xingchen’s soul could not not be written.

Also, LWJ defending WWX from his uncle and WWX being so in love with LWJ that he can’t even be happy about it – love it! Wish I was a better writer so I could’ve depicted the scene better.

All my stories with Nie Mingjue in them are written because I’m obsessed with Nie Mingjue having big ole tiddies. Please just know that whenever Nie Mingjue is even mentioned in my stories, I’ve had to forcibly delete at least 4 sentences about how big and juicy his tits are. If Nie Mingjue does not have huge tits in your mind, I’m sorry but that’s just not OC for me.

and CR is randomly being rebuilt at the end for no reason too except I guess nmj is finally ready to do something about lxc having to be a farmer for the past 16 years

I just saw this "lovely" take from our friendly neighborhood, saying that JC didn't have a choice to "take part" in the seige and by doing that, he was very "proactive" to protect his clan (yeah killing civilians and war refugees is good now). Also, they believed that by protecting WWX, it meant that the clan would be in danger (without considering JC and Jins "proactively" destroyed WWX's reputation). Oh and LWJ protected WWX because he loved him and was biased against the grape, but not because he realized how bullshit and hypocrite the cultivation world was. JC decided not to repay debts is OK now (ignoring that is one of the most dishonorable things to do at that time) while he has the audacity to demand debts from WWX. I can't lololol. This is so hilarious and clownery 🤡🤡🤡

1. Wei Wuxian - Which is probably not a surprise. I have never shied away from expressing my love for him, lmao.

2. Lan Wangji - I love how nuanced and balanced he is. Anyone who calls him boring can fight me.

3. Wen Qing and Wen Ning - Yes, I have included both of them but really, I love them. They're loyal, steadfast, and their story is so heartbreaking in many ways.

4. Lan Sizhui - I love all juniors but LSZ has a special place in my heart. He represents hope and goodness to me.

5. Juniors - I don't care if it is cheating but I can't not mention the remaining Juniors. They also represent hope and goodness to me. Jin Ling, in particular, has such great character development.

Top Scenes:

1. Confession - The confession scene is my favorite because it is so honest and earnest. It shows how much WWX understands LWJ and how open he is with his heart. I can't imagine what LWJ would've felt then, to have his love returned in such an open, straightforward way.

2. Bowing to the Wens - When Wangxian bow to the Wen remanents in the BM. That scene really cements the tragedy of the situation and has so many layers to it.

3. Golden Core reveal - It was perfectly timed and very well done. I like that it was WN going apeshit' on behalf of his friend.

4. WWX's dream - WWX's wonderful little fantasy about him and LWJ living side by side, him being a farmer and LWJ managing a household. I really love it.

5. Wangxian fighting XY - I really like their engagement with XY at Yi City. It really shows how they compliment each other well.

i saw a little bit ago that you said you don't ship wangxian (and before you smash the delete button LEMME EXPLAIN THIS IS NOT HATEMAIL) so now i'm curious as to what your fave wwx ships and lwj ships are, if you have any?

:'D you're all good WWX: funnily enough i like most platonic ships with wwx! I loved him with nhs a lot and then they just kinda...dropped the friendship altogether? my friend loved the idea of wwx/lxc as drinking gossiping bitches and while i don't see it it's like ship-in-law :'D i enjoyed his friendship with wen qing during his farmer arc, i LOVE the idea of hatefuck wwx/jzx, or well, more like hatefuck turns soft because things are said and revealed and wwx can't look at jzx the same (/positive). him and jiang cheng have deeper storyline than wangxian to me so if wwx's whole purpose was to platonically be everything and more for his "brother" that'd make his character excellent to me. i also had a headcanon while watching the show that wwx and xue yang were biologically brothers but each took VERY DIFFERENT path in live/was provided with different care. i REALLY love their on-screen chemistry and would love more of that in either direction, yllz wwx joining with xue yang somehow or "fixing him". or become greater archenemies even. i really don't like his behavior with yanli and lwj, yet those are the main ones for his character :'(

LWJ: i don't think i have any proper ships for him (hence why i don't draw much of him :( ), he was just so stoic and repressed i wanted to hear him sing, you feel me :') i enjoyed the problematic gusu trio doing all sorts of things with and to him, i like the idea of warprize lwj/wens with lans, drunk lwj was just so adorable and i wish more were privy to that sight of him :') i know jiang cheng and lwj are suppossed to like...not like each other because of how wwx acts around the other but i've never personally seen it, it's very fanon-y, at least coming from the show.

wwx is very shippable to me (apart from the main two characters he's meant to be connected to, just my luck) whereas lwj is not shippable to me at all (even though i like lwj more out of the two, i think it's just the nature of their characters and wwx interacts with others more, so naturally it comes up more)

Post-canon 

Distance Makes the Heart Grow Fonder by @wangxiians (E, 8k) - A lovely wangxian reunion/getting-together fic in which WWX returns to Cloud Recesses after spending some time wandering. The best part about this fic is the letter that WWX sends LWJ before heading to CR. Its filled with so much yearning and tenderness. (It made me cry.)

Seasons of Falling Flowers by @merakilyy (G, 40k) - Post-canon fic about WWX and LQR reaching an understanding of each other, so its not too heavy on the WangXian ship. I really gravitate toward this interpretation of LQR, which is why I really enjoyed this fic. The author does an excellent job at weaving in some humor, some tension, and wangxian feels into a great story. 

This Time With Lanterns by chaoticandrogynous (T, 6k) - A lovely fic about wangxian’s wedding, and shows how much LWJ loves WWX. LWJ and the juniors plan a surprise wedding at Koi Tower. Very soft and tender with surprise appearances from a couple people. I liked this fic because majority of the actual ceremony is described in “moments” through WWX’s eyes as he wants to remember as much as he can since he has a bad memory (but he’s working on it!). 

What is Left Over by qodqodqod (T, 30k) - A fic about WWX training MXY’s golden core. I always wondered what it would look like for him to regain his core, so this is one fic exploring that. This fic has a lot - wangxian feels, yunmeng shuangjie feels, training, and a teeny bit of angst. I enjoyed it a lot! 

Modern AU

A Stroke of Fate by @puddingcatbeans (G, 60k) - A very soft and fun fic about musician!LWJ going to a small village to reflect after a dispute with his agency. He meets WWX and slowly starts to open up to the village-life while falling in love at the same time. This is a great fic that’s filled with the domestic vibes that make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I also appreciate the themes of finding yourself, learning how to accept help, and letting go. (It also feeds my fantasies about running away and becoming a farmer.) 

Blooming Days by atsushiis (G, 7k) - Such a sweet wangxian getting-together fic! WWX picks up LWJ when he’s stood up on a date. An exploration of how LWJ may have trouble dating in modern times due to his personality. Featuring the best big brother Lan Xichen, and protective best friend MianMian. And of course, chaotic but kind WWX who swoops in and saves the day. 

all your sums and your pieces by sundiscus (G, 4k) - So this one is a mixture of wangxian and Yunmeng Shuangjie dynamics featuring A-Yuan. A quick and short fic about WWX reuniting with JC. I really like WWX’s internal and verbal dialogue in this fic because he’s clearly nervous and stressed out with A-Yuan, but JC is there to help!

The Paperman by theinkquiry (G, 4k) - This one is a bit of a sad one...but its also really cute at the same time. Paperman!WWX comes and greets LWJ when he’s mourning, but can only say “Lan Zhan.” I really adored this fic because the paperman has so much of WWX’s personality and energy even though he can only say LWJ’s name. And it provides LWJ a glimmer of hope in his darkest time. The ending is very hopeful, if not completely “happy” so no need to worry for their future! You’ll see what I mean if you read it. 

Other 

Hop, Skip, Jump by @merakilyy (G, 11k) - A fic to satisfy your Yunmeng Shuangjie feels and needs. Told through JC’s POV, it follows his relationship with WWX at multiple points throughout his life. Its focused on JC being happy, which I love. I also love how the author chose to address their reconciliation. Despite the fact that they are never going to be able to go back to how it “used to be,” WWX still knows how to put a smile on JC’s face. 

Important Distinctions by @nicole-penn (G, 5k) - A junior-centric fic where they discover a book in the Jingshi detailing all of LWJ’s microexpressions. The juniors don’t know who wrote it, but they can tell that this person really loved LWJ. Despite it taking place mostly during the 13 yr gap, it is a light and humorous fic for those who like to see junior shenanigans and also of course shows the love WWX has for LWJ. And don’t fret! WWX does show up at the end. ;)

There is another missive waiting for him on his bed in the inn he has booked for this week. Wei Wuxian is a busy man, resident rogue cultivator and vanquisher of restless spirits (In truth he just politely sends them on their way but ‘vanquisher’ just sound so much more competent).

He has been travelling from the area of Yiling over Lanling to Yunmeng, getting paid for keeping quiet while cleaning up the resentful energy Sunshot has left behind. So many deaths. Some of them frightfully young.

He has heard of the ransacking of Lotus Pier, its clan staying alive by the skin of their teeth, of the razing of the Cloud Recesses, the burning of buildings that have stood for more than a century. Of the brave sacrifice they all keep whispering about. Of Jin Guangshan stretching his greedy hands towards the seat of Chief Cultivator before Wen Ruohan was even cold. Of the Dafan Wens, simple healers and farmers who were taken in by the Jiangs to help rebuild their home.

The missive is still on his bed, patiently waiting but something about it makes him uneasy. The scroll is of a high quality and sealed with the symbol of the Gusu Lan sect. ZewuJun himself is asking him to come to Caiyi and visit the Cloud Recesses. Not hushed, not hidden away, right there with a seal and everything. It must be important. So he packs his bags and goes, apprehensive and curious both. Their sect was one of those who lost a lot, who lost many capable cultivators.

As he arrives in the town, it is still rebuilding, still mourning its losses. It is quiet, contemplative. Children look at him with wide eyes, a little girl is clutching a rabbit made from colourful cloth to her chest and sticking to her brother’s robe but they don’t say anything, they just watch him as he approaches the mountain and its austere monastery. The steps make his legs ache despite his high cultivation and as he reaches the top, he leans against a pillar to pant for breath.

ZewuJun meets him there, still young but looking like he aged twenty years in the last less than two, a white mourning sash around his waist. He leads Wei Wuxian up the last flight of steps, his back straight but the corners of his mouth downturned.

He takes a fortifying breath. “You must know. Surely you must know what happened. They…they came. Wen Xu and his men. They set the buildings alight, tried to burn our whole sect down. Most of us fled to a hidden cave, carrying what we could.”

As he pours himself another cup, his hands shake but he drains it quickly and gets up. “I need to show you something,” he says and walks ahead, Wei Wuxian trailing behind. Of course he heard of the terrible tragedy, the loss and the sects banding together in their grief, felling Wen Ruohan. But what ZewuJun (“please, call me Lan Xichen or Sect Leader if you must”) wants to present to him still is a mystery.

“What I am about to show you has been kept secret ever since the end of Sunshot so I expect you to keep your silence as well, Young Master Wei,” Lan Xichen says and opens the doors of the Underworld Chamber with a glowing sigil. There, placed on a table made of some pale material is a body swathed in white tied right over left, black hair a river of ink around their face. A very beautiful face in fact, still and serene, headband carefully tied in place, looking as if carved from the finest jade. The man looks as if he was just sleeping.

“Wangji, he…” Sect Leader Lan’s voice trembles as he approaches the body of his younger brother. Because this is his younger brother Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian realises with a start, one of the reasons the sects rallied together. “Our father refused to leave seclusion to help us. Uncle was too weak and I was already too injured. He sacrificed himself, stood between the entrance of our sacred cave and a horde of Wen soldiers. I… I know he was able to kill almost all of them before they broke his leg. He felled Wen Xu himself, riddled with arrows. They… they had to stab a sword into his unwavering, endlessly brave heart to make him stop fighting.”

He looks up at Wei Wuxian, his dark eyes unfathomable and utterly sad. “Master Wei. There is something else you need to know. Wangji has been dead for over a year. His body refuses to rot. He has gone through soul calming ceremonies knowing that he might die one day. But…”, he trails off and looks towards what is presumably his brother’s sword in its stand next to the body, the guqin resting on a table. “He has not left. He is still here. And I want to know why.”

“I will take him the letter myself,” Lan Wangji states, voice pitched low and steady. Though it’s an obstinate, unmovable tone that Lan Xichen has heard far too many times before, he can’t help but feel that it’s his duty to put up at least something of a token argument. He can never seem to argue with anyone but Lan Wangji, but even then he almost always ends up bowing out as gracefully as he can under the strength of his headstrong brother’s will.

“Wangji, it’s not safe…”

“Wei Ying will not hurt me.”

“I didn’t say that he would.”

“The Wens are not a threat.”

Lan Xichen sighs heavily and pauses as they reach a landing to close his eyes against the inevitability of his little brother getting to have his way.
