something so beautiful about the direct change in atmosphere between the first and last two seasons of barry. i’ll talk about it a million times but it’s so fucking cool how you can see the exact moment bill hader’s vision for the outcome of the show warped into this disastrous and depressing situation. it’s so obvious !!!something about binging this show and seeing the characters go from these very alive and strong people to genuinely miserable and gloomy souls within the sixish months between season 2 and 3 is so jarring and terrifying. and with this show being as directorially advanced as it is, watching it cling onto this isolating and incredibly eerie atmosphere honestly makes it go from a fun absurd action comedy with good performances to genuinely some of the best television i have ever seen because the two concepts juxtapose eachother so idiosyncratically. such a tonally distinctive show that i cant think of anyone else who could possibly even begin to craft it

Autistic Barry Headcanons

Goes non-verbal fairly frequently (uses texting or ASL to communicate at those times).

Struggles with sensory overload a lot, especially when around a lot of people, so being in jail was really rough for him.

Doesn't really understand figures of speech and interprets things literally.

Social cues are hard for him and he typically has Stan tell him what's going on if he feels like he's missing something.

His special interests are in coding and technology.

Was the first one to figure out Johnny was autistic as well and helped him with coping skills when he was young.

Is very iffy with touch. The only people allowed to touch him without asking are Stan, Marcus, and Johnny.

Has trouble explaining his relationships with other people and views everyone close to him as family.

Stan helped him a lot with the social aspect of school growing up.

He had to spend a few days alone after they got out of jail to completely calm down sensory wise. Stan slept on Marcus and Johnny's couch so he could have his space.

When watching TV, sometimes he and Johnny will not understand the social cues of the actors and will call Marcus and Stan to translate.

Growing up Barry didn't really get any support that he needed or help with coping mechanisms so he had to teach himself when he got older.

He had a hyperfixation on computers as a kid.

Has several stims including picking at his hands, tapping his fingers together, and messing with the straps of things.

idk if this is accurate but i’ve felt like in previous seasons riz & gorgug have been one of the inter-bad kids dynamics we’ve seen the least of & this season has been so great in that aspect. gorgug having helped make some of riz’s magic gear. riz helping gorgug with his studies. the shared birthday party. gorgug’s gift to riz being something he himself made to protect riz. riz’s gift to gorgug being something he illegally grabbed to protect gorgug. gorgug who utilizes rage to put his body on the line for his friends & riz who will take deep levels of mental stress for his friends. even though it was within the context of a joke, riz calling gorgug an “absolute sweetie.” like yea they might not be in a band together or both part of a presidential campaign team or owlbears teammates, but they’d go to war for each other, because they’re best friends.

Retired Price who can not let go! He’s constantly checking in with his team he misses them and wants to know how they’re doing :( but perhaps multiple times a day

Retired Price whose wife is ecstatic to be spending more time with him only to have him moping around grieving the loss of his beloved job.

Retired Price who still hasn’t quite gotten the hang of retirement and can not stand to be still for a second

“What are you doing?”

“Napping?”

“But why? We could be out. Lets go on a hike”

Retired Price who, though old, cannot stop moving and always has to be active even if it causes some strain on his back

“John please can we go home?”

Retired Price who finally calms down… after he threw out his back. The wife has never seen John so calm before but there he was in the backyard sitting on a lawn chair listening to his audio book clipping away at his bonsai.

Retired price who is now obsessed with keeping his lawn extra tidy. He bought a new (and expensive) lawn mover, waters it every morning, makes sure none of it is dead. Anything to keep his lawn in tip top shape

Retired Price who keeps finding things wrong with the house and throws himself into renovation mode fixing every little problem he finds

Retired Price who can finally get back into his hobbies and finally get back working on his dads old 64 Chevy Impala

Retired Price who’s cut down the texts to his boys from every day to every other day which is progress.

Retired Price who is having much more fun spending time with the missus now that he knows how to relax. They have lots of fun gardening, cooking, baking, and just being in each other’s company.

Retired Price who still goes on hikes but doesnt make it John prices mission to get from point A to point B. His only mission is to enjoy his hike with his lovely wife.

Retired Price who finally finished the car and takes the missus to the beach for a well earned picnic with no hike

Retired Price whose house and lawn has never looked better. Who has a cool new (old) car. Who’s picked up a few new hobbies and skills and who’s been the happiest he’s been for a while

Retired Price who realised he made this decision for his wife therefore he will spend the rest of his life with her and keep her happy. After all happy wife happy life.

Silly little miscellaneous JL headcanons:

Arthur:

-enjoys knitting to de-stress (has a lot of warm blankets he made out of frustration)

-likes to poke his head out of the water like a shark sometimes (it looks really funny and kinda cute)

Barry:

-has to consciously walk slow (he just naturally walks fast and tends to leave the group behind)

-has a hard time estimating how long it will take him to get somewhere (plays into the whole being perpetually late thing)

Clark:

-definitely chews on weird things during meetings and ends up eating it ("Clark where did the thing go?" "I ate it"<- is being serious)

-rolls his eyes a LOT when he thinks people aren't looking (he's a sassy bitch, Ma has definitely called him out on it multiple times)

Jonn:

-tends to hide food in odd places a lot (it does not help that his friends keep eating each other's food from the fridge)

-strong sweet tooth, the amount of sugar he consumes would not be healthy for a human

Hal:

-also a really good driver (dare I say he could be a good race car driver too?)

-fork lift certified >:)

Diana:

-is actually a big sports fan, enjoys watching games on the TV and live. Will happily join you to watch one

-loves any messy outdoors activity, really. Willing to try anything more than once.

Dinah:

-actually REALLY good at reading sheet music and sight reading

-has tested how high she can sing without breaking things too many times to count (she says it's for science, Dinah we no longer have glass cups bc of you)

Oliver:

-loves cooking, it's his love language, always willing to try new stuff (but also just tends to enjoy making the same things a lot)

-loves board games but gets too competitive (how the hell is one THAT good at jenga wtf??)

Bruce:

-has a very goth-style of dancing

-bit of a history nerd, will listen to Diana ramble about her work in archeology a lot too

Billy:

-really good at chess and jigsaw puzzles

-knows how to sew/mend clothing really well and will offer to fix something for you

continuing on my "Lup and Barry get married every cycle and the ensuing weddings encompass a very wide range of tones" bullshit: consider, if you will, a cycle where they mean to get married early on, they really do. but the hunt for the Light is just so intense, and the time flies by so fast, that they still haven't done it by the time the end is closing in...

and in the final fight for the Light, a little under a month out from the Hunger's arrival, Lup is grievously wounded. she lies in Barry's arms, bleeding out, and with her dying breath, she whispers her final wish:

"reanimate my corpse and put her in a nice dress for the wedding"

and who is Barry to turn down a dying wish from his wife, let alone a dying wish that's that fucking funny, so Barry loyally throws some wedding plans and some necromancy spells together so that Zombie Lup can attend the ceremony. her soul doesn't reside in her body anymore because no one was willing to burn the spell slots on True Resurrection (it's only a month out from resets, come on), but she's very well-behaved as Barry very sincerely declares his eternal love and wiggles this cycle's ring onto her finger.

Taako hates it so much. the energy in the studio is incredibly uncomfortable. Lucretia takes a bunch of photographs of every moment so that Lup can enjoy it later upon respawn. most of the crew eventually looks back and recognizes this instance as the start of the slippery slope that lead to lichdom, but Lup and Barry refuse to acknowledge how fucking weird it was. they will treasure those pictures forever
