Just finished watching my dad's favorite movie (Tombstone) with my parents and I just- I found my favorite movie. I've never had one before, what do I do? Do I just curl up in a ball? movie!sonadow is so fucking good because their dynamic is fresh and new but still familiar and shadow is that cool which gives room for post sonic 3 (pre sonic 4) with sonic crushing hard on the new hedgehog and his name is SHADOW he's the cool guy with a bad boy persona that's actually a softie underneath and rocks those red gay highlights and he rides a motorcycle and akira slides off a goddamn building and can teleport and he sounds like KEANU GODDAMN REEVES

for me at least, theres always been a really stark divide in the 'child character is the main antagonist' sort of stories.

on one hand. theres stories that rely on the shock factor of a child being evil, because we're supposed to believe that kids arent capable of that sort of thing. i guess its supposed to be frightening but the novelty always wears off really quickly for me.

i think 'a child is the villain' always lands most successfully for me when a kid is given power beyond their years (either by adults around them or otherwise supernatural/societal forces) and then everyone is floored when they arent exactly responsible with that power. and sometimes theyre even selfish! not because that kid is evil, but because theyre a kid.. acting like a kid would in their situation.

it means that any sort of story that follows requires a protagonist to reason with someone who may not even understand the harm theyre doing, or worse - not have the life lived to understand why they should care in the first place. and also, i think watching what happens when u have an destructive force seeking comforts that any child deserves doing whatever they can to have those things is (to me) much more interesting than 'child who is fucked up and evil for no reason but being born that way actually'

Really fucked up that, when they’re young, Patrick and Art are SO tactile with each other, so comfortable sharing the same space. Art lets Patrick touch him and move him and physically overwhelm him and easily acquiesces to it, if not outright enjoys it.

Then in the present, they’ve been so far out of each other’s orbit for so long, held such animosity that when they have their moment alone in the sauna, Art physically recoils from Patrick’s close proximity! It’s so painful to watch because even as Patrick’s goading him, it’s so obvious he wants to be able to get back into Art’s space. But Art has erected all these walls around himself, he refuses to give Patrick an inch or even admit to missing how close they used to be!

AND THEN we see Art and Tashi later and he wants her to hold him, to be gentle with him, and just TOUCH him. Like, he does miss that kind of close physical contact! He either doesn’t know how to ask for it or is uncomfortable being that openly vulnerable. Worth noting that he pretty much always defers to Tashi in regard to initiating physical intimacy (with their first kiss, though he does state his desire, SHE has to be the one to make the first move). And it seems pretty obvious that Tashi herself isn’t comfortable providing that intimacy, whereas Patrick actively seeks to provide it (the hug/forehead kiss after their win together in the early years, dragging the stool closer to him).

Art has tried very hard to act like he doesn’t need physical affection and even though his discipline and devotion to Tashi has made him a stronger tennis player, it’s made him a hollow person, which, in turn, has kept him from becoming a GREAT tennis player.

All of this, of course, is why the ending hits so damn hard.

mulan/belle really does work based on like personality and goals and actions. They'd like each other sooooo much belle would be like "oh fuck he's handsome and goofy and kind and smart!" and then she'd find out that mulan is (sometimes) a woman and she wouldn't have this language at the time but i think she would have the internal sense of *kisses my wife* a win for feminism everywhere. Mulan would think Belle is cool and smart and also like? low key really funny? She'd also really appreciate that Belle has a desire to be understood but no desire to fit into her society and is fine with being seen as unusual and dreamy. PLUS they would super mega bond over both of them being driven by taking their fathers' place in a circumstance that would almost certainly kill him. Ignore the 1200 year age gap

I was mostly winging it, to be honest. Last year there was some talk of Vasco having a motorcycle and how spiffy he could potentially look in biker gear, so I leaned somewhat into that direction.

But then I got kinda sidetracked and I think his coat started resembling Kaneda's jacket from Akira.
