Broke (2016): BBC Sherlock is a phenomenal piece of media and anything that seems like a flaw just hasn't been fully explored yet

Woke (2020): BBC Sherlock is an incredibly flawed series run by an egotistical writer, it never deserved the hype and is actively bad on so many fronts (especially representation)

Bespoke (2024): BBC Sherlock is flawed and bogged down by increasingly poor writing, which many fans refused to see while it was airing, leading to hugely misplaced expectations (particularly for the final series), AND it has the seeds of some compelling characterizations and portrayals, some genuinely solid performances, and touches--albeit imperfectly--on complexities that are still being discussed today (particularly as it relates to the relationship between Sherlock and John). The huge cultural impact of the show has created a massive pendulum effect in its public perception, leading to most people today remembering a caricature of the show (whether positive or negative) rather than appreciating its nuanced merits and failings...that being said Season 4 sucked

#these just sum up my personal takes at the years in question and also what i'm seeing on tumblr/other social media #bbc sherlock #sherlock holmes #and i actually have a lot more thoughts to share on this series #specifically relating to the cultural impact #there is SO much about the show that goes unappreciated in hindsight because of how public perception of it has soured #and i totally fell into this as well--i still regularly rewatch hbomberguy's video absolutely dismantling the series and he isn't wrong!!#but what i'm saying is that i think it's easy for us to look at a piece of media (especially one so massively popular) like sherlock...#with very black-and-white lenses. it wouldn't have become so popular if there wasn't something inherent in it that resonated with people #and that's being buried (and i totally forgot it) because 'sherlock is cringe and problematic. can't believe i liked that'#which again it IS full of issues and those are well-documented as they should be. future portrayals should not repeat those mistakes #BUT being able to impact so many people is a merit in itself. and that's only possible because of other genuinely good things about the show #yes the way they handled the relationship between john and sherlock was riddled with problems YES it was often queerbaiting #AND the way they portrayed that relationship had a deep effect on me. i saw a lot of myself in sherlock and the complex way he loved john #the nuanced feelings he had about john's marriage to mary. the part (in s4!) where john calls him inhuman for not feeling romantic love #there was genuine intention and care put into some parts of this show and it comes through in scenes like those. they impact people.#and because of this realization i'm going to (eventually) do a rewatch of the show. i'm much older and i want to see how i'll view it now #but i want to go into it--and i want everyone who engages with it still--to have an open mind and evaluate it for what it is #not what we expected it to be (secret episode anyone?) or what the cultural drift has turned it into (the tiktok of sherlock's mind palace)#but the messy problematic somewhat-heartfelt massively significant and ultimately meaningful piece of media it actually was #anyway that's my thoughts would love to hear y'all's perspectives #funny how after all this time making a sherlock post still feels like i'm poking a bees' nest lol please be kind!#kay can i just catch my breath for a second #kay has a party in the tags

Tumblr's stupid queue doesn't work.

Ok y'all it has just come to my attention that tumblr doesn't let you have more than 1 000 posts in the queue (mean), and I gotta clear out my queue so that I can move the 1 000 posts in my drafts into the queue. This would mean that for the next couple of weeks I might have to increase the post frequency from the queue. By a lot. I'm indecisive though, so I'm putting the burden of making a decision on how many times I should post on my own blog onto anyone who sees this post. Right now I post 12 times a day from my queue.

#had to re-edit the image real quick because the original edit was from a post I made about Drew years ago #and while the Drew thing is becoming less and less likely. oh yeah i went to a uni open day and allergies decided to pummel me in a rather quiet room with over a hundred other people during a law course presentation when i had ONE tissue that had previously been a bookmark. i only sneezed four times but my right eye and nostril could NOT stop watering i gave in and used my sleeve and it got absolutely soaked in snot 😭😭

#anyway the uni was pretty whelming but i got some useful info about ways to get into the course i want if i don't qualify initially #and some actually really useful info about a lot of work opportunities during the degree. there's an on campus law practice :0 #and a lot of places offer jobs through the uni instead of putting them on market #so pretty good stuff #tho i did see my almost-ex (we never really dated but he liked me and i humoured it for a couple days before i realised i did not like him)#and he was pissing me off there i dont feel strongly negatively but man i do not fw him #oh man we're tumblr mutuals hi if you see this.... i would block but i forgot his URL. dont think he uses this often?? ill have a look #and maybe block. yeah #update i scrolled through my tumblr messages to find him and it says his blog does not exist #anyway. wow i got off topic #oh yeah i didnt fw him during our short ideal either #bc i was all uhh yeah im not sure about this lets take it slow bro did NOT take it very slow #anyway it was kind of funny he very obviously liked me for weeks before i caught on it he said 'i like you' and i still did not realise #on halloween he was eager to suggest doing the lady and the tramp spaghetti move on a pocky stick as a 'challenge' and i thought nothing of #it #so that was a cool insight into how oblivious i am in the romance department

had a dream I called the Danish emergency services (I was in Denmark) and they hung up on me :(

#was trying to tell them about leads i found in a murder #i also dreamed I had my hair cut and the hairdresser cut it way too long #(different dream)#also I kept biking to some church that doesn’t exist irl. not sure what i was doing there. going to concerts i think?#i am not religious never have been #was wearing my winter coat and a wool hat and embarrassed i was wearing that much so early in the year #even though it was cold as balls in the dream #also my bike had two really big lamps #but only one of them worked. or. so i assumed. didn’t actually try #OH and then i dreamed manda was recommended a random funny facebook post about one of my family members with like 900 likes #and sent it to me because it was funny also not realising it was my family member #creeped dream me out to hell and back #anyway big night for dreams idk why i’m using tumblr as my dream journal felt important #don’t usually dream this much/vividly/remember all of them at all #i did wake up in mis murder mystery dream though so maybe that’s why #oh yeah the murder mystery dream was like fucking. point and click video game format. i was walking around the apartment where the murder #happened just poking around shit until i found 3 leads which was my. goal? and then i called the police #and actually at first i accidentally called the swedish police. i forgot to put the danish country code in front of the number. so i hung up #on them and called the danish police instead #i’m not sure that’s how it actually works #like idk if you need the country code or if your phone will recognise what country you’re in i feel like it’s the latter #also the cell coverage was really bad so i heard like half of. what the emergency responder was saying #z talks #not horse game #sso spoilers #WILD FUCKING NIGHT IM GONNA GO BACK TO SLEEP NOW
