Stranger Things creates the illusion of active audience participation in the outcomes via the process that urges viewers to search for Easter eggs, ephemera, and other artifacts from 1980s popular culture. Critically, the show features Dungeons & Dragons prominently as a means to read the show and it is more than a fun throwback to the era. Dungeons & Dragons, as a game, is played on graph paper and that familiar grid of squares appears nearly everywhere in Stranger Things. The hallways in the Hawkins Lab? Grid. Shirts worn by Will, Barb, Nancy, and Mrs. Wheeler (amongst others)? Grids. The wallpaper in Steve Harrington's bedroom? Grid. Even Eleven's beloved Eggo waffles contain a grid pattern. The grid pattern is so prevalent in the design of Stranger Things that it can't be happenstance. It's an invitation to see the entirety of the series as a gameboard. Just like The Upside Down, it's all around you but you have to be able to see it.

sometimes a piece of media just! grabs you by the throat and says, "hey buddy! I'm gonna irrevocably alter your brain chemistry now! have fun with that!!"

my top bit of advice going into the new year: compliment people. especially strangers. literally everyone you interact with if you can. when you buy coffee in the morning compliment the barista's tattoos. when you're chatting with a coworker tell them that by the way you like their outfit. always find something they've chosen to do on purpose. nail polish, jewellery, tattoos, hair colour/style, statement accessory, outfit, etc are all good bets. things people hope will be noticed. things that aren't too personal so it doesn't make them uncomfortable (eg probably not their physical features). i've gotten into the habit of scanning everyone i talk to for something about them that i think is cool so i can tell them. it's a great habit because it makes me notice people and realise just how many neat little details there are in people's presentation of themselves that might pass me by if i wasn't paying attention. and it brings out so much joy. you'd be surprised how much it disarms people to receive an unexpected compliment from someone they don't know. it is the most sincere smile you will see all day long. it feels nice to make people happy but it also means you win the social interaction. establish dominance by complimenting a stranger's earrings and disappearing into the fog

Some things about Allan:

He’s the only one who reacts to the narrator

He’s the only doll (besides the Weird House) who isn’t swayed in some way by Ken’s takeover

He also declares himself as “Ken's buddy" (making canon his official box description) which makes his inability to be swayed more interesting

He has bendable legs (probably the only reason he tries to jump the fence instead of going around like everyone else)

He easily decked a half-dozen construction Kens and could probably singlehandedly win the Ken fight

He seems to know more about the real world than most Barbies

He knows what NSYNC is 

He knows about other Allan copies living in the real world (I’m trying to figure out if he made this up to convince the humans he can live in the real world, but even if he did, how does he know what NSYNC is???)

There are no other Allan models
