Every time someone says “Alastor is overrated”, a year is taken off my lifespan.

It’s a common occurrence, really. The popular male character with a lot of fans that may or may not think he’s hot always, always gets shat on. I’ve seen it. You’ve probably seen it too. And it’s birthed out of bitterness.

So, when people say “X is overrated”, what proof do they have?

“He’s a bad character!” Oh? In what way? Is he badly written? Do you not like his character arc (if any so far)? Do you not like his design? Do you think you could design him in a way truer to the creator’s vision of him? Do you think he’s just a bad person?

“He’s replaceable!” Is he, really? Could you completely remove him from the story and see nothing change? Could you, without changing the story, erase him from that story? Does his presence serve no purpose in that universe? And, even if he doesn’t, would his world be a brighter place without him in it?

“He has too much screen time!” Does he? Or do you just think he does? Is he one of the main characters? This other character has even more screen time than he does, are you going to complain about them too? Are only the protagonist and antagonist allowed to be on screen for any significant amount of time? Are you complaining about how many lines he has?

“Thirsty fangirls are sexualizing him too much!” Welcome to the internet. That’s what thirsty fangirls do. Have you never heard of Rule 34?

“He’s a bad person!” So what? Lots of characters are bad people. Duh. Not everyone can have sunshine in their hearts and butterflies in their eyes.

“He’s ugly!” You think he’s ugly. Hell, maybe his fans think he’s ugly, too. But someone out there is always going to be attracted to the unconventional.

“He’s a villain!” Wow, you identified the antagonist! You deserve a gold star! You must feel so proud! Now, can you tell me why people have been sexualizing the Devil for centuries?

“He doesn’t deserve the hype!” The hype had to come from somewhere. Did it come from the show? Did it come from the fans? Either way, someone thinks he’s really neat, and told all their friends about it.

“He doesn’t deserve to exist!” His creator sure thinks he does.

“He sucks!” Cock? Pussy? Both? Neither? A secret third thing? Either way, it’s none of your business, now is it?

“People ship him with everyone!” It’s okay, you can just say you’re jealous of how much he’s getting laid in other people’s heads.

“He’s cliche!” And? Every character is, in some way, a cliche. You’re a cliche. I’m a cliche. Everyone’s a cliche. But is he doing something interesting with the cliche?

And yes, a lot of these are things I’ve seen specifically about Alastor. But if you feel this way about any character, well, answer those questions. See if you make sense to yourself. Because there’s a difference between just not liking a character, and hating just to hate.

Tina’s pov of purgatory 1 is required reading for fans of ALL teams. So many iconic moments (making the tea originally for Bagi, eating maggots in the snow, taking charge and hiding with Missa and Rivers when Bolas was hunting for easy pickings, her entire conversation with Mariana, her ongoing hatred of Fit, scary dog privileges, the rivalry with Cellbit, GG ninja’s betrayal, I COULD KEEP GOING) are integral to understanding not just SoulFire but purgatory as a whole, all found in her streams.

Plus, the after purgatory party segments hold a special place in my heart. The meta conversations with Tubbo and Bad over what it was like being the most hated team and how it felt for Bad being “the most hated player.” Then later with everyone in the call just playing games while Tina draws the SoulFire co-leaders or joins in herself. The vibes are fantastic and were a great cooldown after the high stress event. I can’t recommend her pov enough.

god!merlin

druids can NOT speak in people’s minds. when they are before a high priestess, they can pray to her directly and she can hear them (hence the scene between morgana and mordred when he spoke in her mind).

merlin who constantly has this buzzing in the back of his head that he can never understand besides the occasional odd word which makes no sense. but when he’s closer to a druid or when their prayer is super strong, then he can make out what they’re saying.

merlin who brings up the fact that druids can speak into peoples minds to gaius who casually unfurls a scroll containing his ongoing list of reasons why merlin is/evidence of merlin being a god of the old religion.

i honestly don’t think anything compares to having your friends feel welcome and comfortable in your own home. that big smile on their face as they look around and you let them, feeling on display because they’ve never seen you like this, not really, and you wonder if they will find this lacking, if they will find you lacking. but they don’t. because they’re smiling and they’re complimenting you and you can watch a tiny part of them falling in love with this home just like you did the very first time you found it. when it’s all still a work in progress because it’s always a work in progress, but you’re both at ease now because this is your home and that is your friend and somewhere in the universe there pops up the thought that by proxy, this is their home as well if they so choose. for a while at least. for as long as they’ll stay.

i don’t think anything compares to your friends finding comfort in your home.

I want to be clear. If you have hurt people and lied and manipulated it needs to stop. If you admit that your friend is a terf and allow them to continue to flourish on your server where I know there are trans people it needs to stop. If you misgender people behind their backs it needs to stop. If you spread bigotry and lies about other creators for no reason it needs to stop. If you are ableist to people, if you talk down to people or treat them like trophies, it needs to stop.

I am sick that I allowed this person access to my event and to my spaces. She is now removed. I am sick that there is or was hate flourishing on her server. I am proud of everyone who has spoken up and those who have not spoken up yet.

All this, it doesn’t just need to stop for me and my friends. This is not good for you. This is not safe or healthy. And all I want is for that to no longer continue.

I really do wish healing on all of us. I think undoing all the tangled webs of what this person has said about this or that person will take time. I wish I could make it all better in an instant. And I’m sorry.

i cannot tell you how much it infuriates me to see headlines about starbucks losing money captioned with “boycotts work!!” like…. okay what change did starbucks make in response to losing that money?? what change did you WANT them to make? what ties to israel do they have and how would it impact israel if they cut those ties?? starbucks losing money is evidence that a boycott is HAPPENING, but not that it is “working” or achieving any particular goal. the point of a boycott isn’t simply to punish a company for being shitty, it is to force their hand to make a CHANGE. and to be absolutely clear, fuck starbucks i am all for not giving them your money. but an organized boycott with a tangible goal and choosing not to support a place are two different things.

Actually we’re gonna cover a lot of ground I haven’t talked about openly before so settle in

Chuu’s fascination with Machines n the like started REAL early, early when she was small. She wanted to…. Disassemble things. Crates, shelves, alchemist tools of the trade, Mammets… carts… she wanted to lay it all out. See how it fit together. And then MAYBE put it all back together again. And she lived on an island, in a port town, with her mom (an actual Viera) who was continuously unwell and kept getting worse every time she got better and sick again, and the sunseeker chirurgeon who was trying to treat her condition, and his partner, another sunseeker who if I recall correctly, was an alchemist. So. The house she was staying in had no shortage of things a Viera with curious + grabbing destructive hands shouldn’t be grabbing.

It takes coaxing to get her to start putting stuff back together again all the time, and by that point at least she’d stopped trying to pry nails out of things (wooden objects were a pain, she found, to take apart, and piece back together, the wood sometimes was old and slightly rotted, the nails came out unkindly, the shapes were often simple.)… things with screws and bolts were… fun. Her dads (in her mind, they were her dads, but out loud, it was sir, and mister) kept trying to send her out on Missions (chores; your mom isn’t doing well, we don’t want you to have to keep hanging around the house while her every breath rattles and her every cough is harsh and wet. Chuu knew. She was 14. It wasn’t hard to figure out…) for, small stuff. Fetch quests; go pick up ingredients for dinner, or hunt down this one small herb on the cliff side above town for this tincture I’m trying to make to help alleviate the cough symptoms. I have enough for now but having more to replenish what I’m using isn’t bad.. low stakes, yknow.

And when her Mom finally passed from her illness the pair kept Chuu on (Chuu herself will not comment on the her mom and the dads’ relationship, but I CAN and I’ll tell you those fuckers were poly. They might never have slapped a label on it but the love was there. It didn’t start that way, but it certainly was that way by the end.)

This ended up wildly off track didnt it. (Let me get it back on track, and in so doing gracefully gloss over the chunk of history I’m unclear on 💖)

She gets REALLY good at what she’s doing when she signs on with the Garlean Empire. It wasn’t… a hard choice. There was nothing left tying her down where she had been by that point; they’d offered direction, room, board… and, well… her current skills were enough to get placed under Midas’ guidance.

And she found that. Magitek is incredibly interesting compared to whatever she’s had her hands on before and she loves it. Purpose. Drive. She learns how to build things that she’d never dreamed of before under Midas’ guidance. She helps refine designs for two legged heavy artillery a lone person can pilot. To deal with the enemy. She does not think about who the enemy is. The enemy is a problem, and the Machine, glorious, flawless, violent, is the answer.

And then they blow up Bozja. Midas with it. An entire city, wiped off the map. She finds that the numbers- subjects- on the sheet that they’d been running experiments on have faces. Haunted, tired faces, with dull eyes and drawn cheeks and small hands. Children. You can’t just quit, but Midas was gone. Cid was missing. Nero was a thorn in her side and she didn’t want to continue work under someone less competent, or pursue someone else’s dreams. So …. She went missing too. Crashed an airship into Thavnair and stripped the wreckage to the bones for coin. Went into temporary hiding in Kugane, then Ul’Dah, and finally fell in with the slightly sketchy free company she’s with now. She maintains their airships and submersibles and they don’t ask where she came from 💖

I think I got a lil lost in the reeds and I was supposed to go to sleep like 4 hours ago but I kept turning this question over in my mind like a rubrix cube despite my best efforts >v>; The Long And Short Is; she’s always wanted to know how stuff worked, and falling in with Garlemald for (cautiously estimating her time there at about 30+ years) helped her understanding grow in great leaps. Around the start of 2.0 she awakens the Echo (Thrice damned Migraine Creator) and doesn’t realize it’s use until her next encounter with Allagan tech (where she interfaces on a personal level and. It kicks her new obsession up. And… allagans did quite a bit of soul research… it is, somewhat, why there is a Tuesday.)
