the hunchback of notre dame was not and never should have been intended for children. it’s a complex story about love, lust, power dynamics and racism, and by watering it down into a G-RATED kids’ cartoon (with cute singing gargoyles!) we lost out on all the richness of it. esmeralda is just a pretty dancing girl. phoebus is a nice soldier. against this backdrop, “hellfire” is startlingly frightening and creepy. (because it’s adult!) quasimodo sees esmeralda as an angel, frollo sees her as the Devil incarnate, and there’s little else to bring us to a correct conclusion of her character. victor hugo would’ve been mortified. (also, the hypersexualization of a woman of color…)

that doesn’t apply as much to the disney stage musical. here, disney actually meant this for adults. here, you get sweeping orchestral music, a plethora of lyrically complex songs, a richly textured frollo, and even an emotional glimpse of jehan. it’s not without its faults: despite a little more character development, esmeralda is still a very adult sex symbol (hey! she was supposed to be 16!), and phoebus is rewritten as a heroic little himbo. and gringoire is still Not in the picture. but at least you get a better representation of what victor hugo actually intended.

the thing is, two-hour adaptations of massive novels are probably always going to fall short. but victor hugo chose to write SO in depth about lust, sin, misogyny, hypocrisy, death, racism, unrequited love, etc etc etc! there is so much in this book! and the thing is that i believe children are capable of understanding complex themes, and i believe that they should be exposed to rich media. age-appropriate, of course, and i don’t think that this is a story appropriate for young children — but even if disney was planning to cut out the frollo lust plotline (which they didn’t), at least represent women? and romani people? and racism? and unrequited love? in a way that’s both palatable and well-written. we don’t need to water things down for children to understand them. take mr. roger’s neighborhood! take star trek! take bluey! these are all shows that tackle hard themes in a kid-friendly way. more of this please!!!

and if it comes to a story like hunchback, where the big storyline is that a catholic priest is lusting after a young girl? do us a favor and don’t make it into a kid’s cartoon.

So here's a question. How would Bruce Wayne react to an S/O who, FOR WHATEVER REASON, has been told that he's Batman from an outside source, but here's the kicker: They don't believe it. Alfred thinks it's hilarious and while Bruce thinks ultimately it might be better you think that... he is a little offended. You think he's stupid? Wait, no, explain what a himbo is.

He's dumb but handsome and respects women? That's... okay. He could understand that given his public persona. He's absolutely going to try and change your opinion of him privately, however.

He's still himself but he's more... open with some of his hyperfixative interests in history, strategem- He's not just "working out" when you aren't together. The kids think it's hilarious to watch their "dad" making kind of an ass out of himself. Alfred keeps making dry, witty commentary, "Sir, I've noticed a pile of books about the Napoleonic Wars on the main entryway table. Shall I add Victor Hugo's 'Les Miserables' and Tolstoy's 'War and Peace' next to them? I'm sure their length and content will add stimulating conversation to your foreplay with (y/n)."

Bruce, in a completely dry tone, "No, Alfred, I can't lay it on too thick."

If it does come out in a life or death situation that he is, in fact, Batman, he'll have this tight smile.

WIP SNIP {Insert Day of the Week}

Here's a Modern/Muggle AU I'm tinkering with featuring hot himbo swim instructor Draco and not just one but TWO unlikely admirers!

snip 1:

Ron sat in one of the chairs after the twins got called into the pool, pulled his phone out to text his best friend when the sight of Malfoy’s ridiculous, beach blonde hair caught his eye again.  

He looked up, studying Malfoy as he wandered down the line of swimmers, his face still plastered with that ridiculous smile. 

He seemed like he was happy. The concept felt so foreign that Ron began to wonder if he’d ever seen Malfoy happy in all the years they’d been at school together. 

Ron noticed other things as well, unable to help himself. 

Malfoy’s black tank top and short blue shorts showed off a well-toned body—Ron wondered if he still worked out on top of swimming— and his face, though pointy as it always was, had filled out into a sharp, striking jawline. 

Ron wasn’t admiring him, exactly. He was just trying to find the flaw, the crack. 

What would it take to get Malfoy to show his true colors?

When Malfoy came back out thirty minutes later to signal the end of class, Ron still hadn’t stopped staring, and he hadn’t found an answer to his question.

Five minutes into the book, Hermione sighed, snapping the covers shut. A total dud. She’d already solved the murder, figured out who was going to die, predicted the dull, lifeless romantic subplot, and ascertained that the smut would probably be subpar if the descriptions of the size zero D cup green-eyed redheaded femme fatale was any indication. 

Straight to Goodwill with this one. 

Hermione glanced through the window to watch Hugo swim down the lap of the pool, his splashes abnormally large and cumbersome. His teacher was a petite, button-nosed doll of a woman with water-slicked black hair and eyes the color of burnt caramel. 

Hermione watched the teacher work her magic, her hands steady as they straightened Hugo’s hips, guiding his kicks straighter than he’d been able to accomplish in lessons with Ron. 

A flash of blonde caught her eye and Hermione found herself studying someone entirely different. 

Someone she shouldn’t be studying. 

The problem with Draco was, he presented a puzzle to be solved, and with twenty-five minutes remaining, Hermione found the prospect irresistible. 

Maybe it was the lavender shorts with two-inch inseams that pulled across his tight, muscled bottom when he crouched to listen to what one of the teachers was saying. Perhaps it was the mid-calf black wave patterned socks that should’ve been tacky but weren’t. It had to be the way his arms pulled when he folded them. Or the strand of hair dangling over his eye when he bent his neck to scribble a note on his clipboard.
