@Nicole: My question is this: Is Sophie's leadership suffering this time around because of Nate's control issues (jumping in on her, where while he was drunk he'd be more laid back) and because of her break up? Don't Hardison and Eliot compliment her leadership abilities in Second David Job (which was after the building blown up, to be fair...). I'm just a little confused about how that character arc is tracking... Running a crew's a bear, and Nate poking her doesn't help. theres a lotta things i wanted to do this year but I think the thing that would help me the most is to like. start personal projects that make me enjoy my work again. x( i wanna be excited about game development and making games again, it really helped me push myself to learn and get better and this stagnating just feels terrible. Knowing what I'm capable of but not being able to set on the path to getting there.

Several years into being involved with climate activism, I obviously think that the only way climate change can be reversed even slightly is by changing from capitalism to a new system that is not profit driven. I did from the start. It's quite hard to find a climate activist that does not realise this on some level. And yet as I've said before, many climate activists are liberals. Most are somewhere on the left for clear reasons, but they are all over the spectrum. I have yet to see the supposed awful liberal climate activists who just want to keep their beloved capitalism vs the good hard left climate activists who want to dismantle the system in the good and proper way and replace it with [socialism/communism/anarchism/some other idea they had that mixes them together]. That doesn't play out in any activism group irl, online is the only place I've ever seen that.

Something I don't think we talk enough about in discussions surrounding AI is the loss of perseverance.

I have a friend who works in education and he told me about how he was working with a small group of HS students to develop a new school sports chant. This was a very daunting task for the group, in large part because many had learning disabilities related to reading and writing, so coming up with a catchy, hard-hitting, probably rhyming, poetry-esque piece of collaborative writing felt like something outside of their skill range. But it wasn't! I knew that, he knew that, and he worked damn hard to convince the kids of that too. Even if the end result was terrible (by someone else's standards), we knew they had it in them to complete the piece and feel super proud of their creation.

Fast-forward a few days and he reports back that yes they have a chant now... but it's 99% AI. It was made by Chat-GPT. Once the kids realized they could just ask the bot to do the hard thing for them - and do it "better" than they (supposedly) ever could - that's the only route they were willing to take. It was either use Chat-GPT or don't do it at all. And I was just so devastated to hear this because Jesus Christ, struggling is important. Of course most 14-18 year olds aren't going to see the merit of that, let alone understand why that process (attempting something new and challenging) is more valuable than the end result (a "good" chant), but as adults we all have a responsibility to coach them through that messy process. Except that's become damn near impossible with an Instantly Do The Thing app in everyone's pocket. Yes, AI is fucking awful because of plagiarism and misinformation and the environmental impact, but it's also keeping people - particularly young people - from developing perseverance. It's not just important that you learn to write your own stuff because of intellectual agency, but because writing is hard and it's crucial that you learn how to persevere through doing hard things.

Write a shitty poem. Write an essay where half the textual 'evidence' doesn't track. Write an awkward as fuck email with an equally embarrassing typo. Every time you do you're not just developing that particular skill, you're also learning that you did something badly and the world didn't end. You can get through things! You can get through challenging things! Not everything in life has to be perfect but you know what? You'll only improve at the challenging stuff if you do a whole lot of it badly first. The ability to say, "I didn't think I could do that but I did it anyway. It's not great, but I did it," is SO IMPORTANT for developing confidence across the board, not just in these specific tasks.

Idk I'm just really worried about kids having to grow up in a world where (for a variety of reasons beyond just AI) they're not given the chance to struggle through new and challenging things like we used to.

YES TO ALL OF THIS!!! And it's also about how they're soooo in sync with each other in sooooo many ways. That's why they bonded so quickly! That's why Helena chose Myka as her way into the warehouse! It's why Myka and Helena both got attached!

BUT they're also tragically, perpetually out of sync with each other in an important way. Obviously, it's Helena's plan to end the world in S2 that keeps them out of sync, BUT HERE!! in season 3, it is something much smaller, but no less significant. Because Myka does indeed know how sorry Helena is and that she regrets everything. She doesn't need to hear the apology, and she isn't shutting the door on anything when she says "I just wish you would have realized that sooner." That line is just her voicing her own regret and wish. But Helena hears it as a shut door! The guilt of nearly ending the world gets added to her guilt for not being able to protect her daughter and the guilt of all the harm her actions pre-bronzing caused like killing a fellow warehouse agent (probably Wolcott) -- Helena hasn't begun to forgive herself for any of that which is why she both feels the need to apologize to Myka and doesn't know how. She doesn't realize that Myka's already forgiven her, that mourning the 'what if' is not the same thing as condemning her. Instead, everything gets filtered through Helena's self-blame and guilt so they remain on different pages when all they want is to be on the same page with each other AND THEN WE ALL CRY 😭
