Ooph, I don't know which Bering and Wells writer documented their journey of writing a smut fic back in 2012-2013, but their bemoaning of 'omg how is this still not done' and warnings of how smut balloons the word count have lurked in the back of my head for the past decade, and Jo Almighty I should've heeded the warning. I should've heeded it 😩

(I mean not really because I did really want to try my hand at smut again and I'm certain this is going to come out fantastic after editing. But HOLY CRAP is it making me feel like the world's slowest writer after two years of hitting deadlines and large word counts 😭)

I am guessing we all remember this scene... but what about this tie?

Well...

Let me cast your minds back to Whine Club, 7.17. Remember when Niles was having a good day and looking forward to his wine club, and Mel made him change his tie and jacket. Yup. Same tie.

And when he is asked to take it off? Instant mood change.

Now, with a different tie and a darker jacket, we see it happening all over again. Niles is being forced to match up to somebody else's expectations. First Maris, and now Mel, he is being manipulated into pretending to be something he is not.

That is why, this tie is everything. It is choice. It is Niles being honest, making a decision and taking a risk, no matter the outcome, because today he chose to be brave.

Frasier, series 7 episode 24: Something borrowed, Someone Blue (Part 2)

All this 7.14 talk has me thinking about Niles and Daphne's tendency to role play and wondering how quickly they figured out that transferred into the bedroom when I don't need to be wondering about anything. I literally lay the groundwork for it in my smut fic. I have already found one possible answer to this question. I do not need to get caught up in pondering it this morning!

Ok need to talk a little about these two moments, not the proposals, but what comes after:

In the first case girl just got engaged and what's the first thing she does? She goes looking for Niles to apologize for her earlier outburst and then stays with him in the kitchen. Totally normal behaviour right? You just accepted a marriage proposal and instead of celebrating with your fiance here you are hugging your friend you have totally platonic feelings for, resting your head on his shoulder like he's your home and you never want to be elsewhere, and you only pull away when your new fiance comes in. Oh Daph..

But after Niles's proposal the only thing she does is pull him closer. There's no doubt there, no visions of men with unknown faces, no second guessing. This time she knows she's exactly where she belongs and all she needs is to have him by her side, and she's content and completey at peace.

Frasier saying to Niles that there was no chance that Daphne could have feelings for him....

THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING!!!! Exactly! Frasier (and Niles too) get so caught up in the argument of ooo ~psychic visions~ are they real or complete bullshit? And I'm just like THAT'S A NON-ISSUE RIGHT NOW PEOPLE! Daphne doesn't want to marry Donny. That's what you should be hearing when she says she had a vision she was meant for someone else. And what you should tell her is that the decision is fully up to her. If she doesn't want to marry Donny, she can just say no without searching for an excuse. I know we're a decade or so away from the 'no is a complete sentence' movement, but also no is a complete sentence. Now, if she wants to figure out why she doesn't want to marry Donny - if it is indeed a fear of commitment or if she feels like she doesn't know him well enough or they're not compatible or she MAYBE POSSIBLY IDK has feelings for someone else in her friend circle - then that's an entirely separate conversation to have.

But first and foremost she's saying 'I don't want to say yes to Donny' and the only thing any of them should've said in return is 'That's fine. You're allowed to say no.' AND THAT'S IT PERIOD until she asks for further advice. /rant

I think you're spot on here about Frasier pushing his own baggage and fear of commitment onto Daphne! I think that's exactly what happened. Cause yeah he's not a good psychiatrist (admittedly they have Niles do some stupid stuff with his patients too, but he is by and large a better therapist than Frasier), and Frasier is often shown projecting his own feelings onto others. So yeah, I'm convinced this was why he pushed the advice he did.

@amtrak12 OMG THIS is why I love talking to you about this show! 😭😭 Yes, from Niles's side what he did isn't right but it's not Niles that frustrates me the most in this episode, it's Frasier and the way he gets involved in all of this. I know he's actually being a good and protective friend to Daphne here, calling out Niles on his behaviour and it's good that he does that, but WHYYY is he so insistent on her marrying Donny if she said she's not sure it's the right thing for her to do?? Ok, fine, he doesn't believe in visions so he thinks she invented some motive to hide her real fears of commitment and all that. Fine, alright. BUT if that's true, if she went to such lengths to find a way for her to get out of that relationship, then she clearly has her reasons, she clearly doesn't believe in that relationship enough to want to solidify it with a marriage. So then why insist so much for her to accept something she doubts enough to invent visions about 'mistery men with red bowties' ? I don't know but if a friend of mine came to me and told me she's not sure she wants to marry her current boyfriend because she had visions about another man she's destined to be with, I wouldn't have told her 'Oh yeah, you definitely should dump this dude and then travel around the world looking for the other one', but I wouldn't have said 'Well that's stupid, forget about dumb visions, they're not real so suck it up and go get married' either. Clearly there were some issues there and I would've just assumed she doesn't love the guy enough to want to marry him and that was her way of explaining or justifying to herelf what she's feeling. I don't even know if this post makes any sense but the point is I'm annoyed with the way Frasier (indirectly) puts pressure on Daphne in this episode, instead of just letting her sort through her feelings by herself, even if it was with the best intentions.

As a side note, we have to appreciate the irony of Frasier being the one to help fulfill the vision he didn't believe in to begin with, when he brings those two together at the end of season 7. Ultimately what Daphne saw in that vision did come true, only with bigger and more complicated consequences for everyone involved and Frasier started it all lol.
