Author rant incoming, but I don't know what pisses me off more: lazy assholes who act like they're 'the real deal' because they have an AI make a book or story for them.

Or actual authors who have no class solidarity & use AI slop for their covers.

I can't be the only one who gets pissed at that. There is just so much here to say about how little solidarity there is between different types of creatives, how easily one group will get rid of another because they can save up on money or they already get most of the money. The recent strikes for actors and animators are proof enough that some people got theirs so they don't care about other creatives.

But as a writer who's dirt poor & STILL would never consider using AI for a book cover, I can't help but be bloody disappointed in these people.

It's like that adage of 'if you couldn't be bothered to make it, why should I be bothered to consume it?' Except it's 'if you couldn't be bothered to support a fellow creative, why should I support you?'

"but I want to see XYZ" make a manip. write a fic. make an edit. draw fanart. talk to other fans who take commissions/requests. look at what other fans have already created, let it inspire you.

AI has no place in fandom spaces. not for anything. ever.

like i'm sorry but we as a fandom have to stay firm on our anti-AI values. we cannot suddenly start giving AI a pass when it's something we "want to see" like destiel kisses. it's not suddenly fine. we're not going to start using AI to make fanfic scenes come to life or audio AI to make characters "say" stuff we want to hear. you have GOT to be firm on your anti-AI stance. if you start making exceptions then suddenly anything will fly. fandom is for real art and creations made by real people. no AI fanfics. no AI art. no AI rendered "bonus" scenes. no AI audio. none of it has a place here.

Per Wired:

In an email sent to customers today, Amazon said that Echo users will no longer be able to set their devices to process Alexa requests locally and, therefore, avoid sending voice recordings to Amazon’s cloud. Amazon apparently sent the email to users with “Do Not Send Voice Recordings” enabled on their Echo. Starting on March 28, recordings of every command spoken to the Alexa living in Echo speakers and smart displays will automatically be sent to Amazon and processed in the cloud.

Attempting to rationalize the change, Amazon’s email said: “As we continue to expand Alexa’s capabilities with generative AI features that rely on the processing power of Amazon’s secure cloud, we have decided to no longer support this feature.”

(…) Amazon has previously mismanaged Alexa voice recordings. In 2023, Amazon agreed to pay $25 million in civil penalties over the revelation that it stored recordings of children’s interactions with Alexa forever. Adults also didn’t feel properly informed of Amazon’s inclination to keep Alexa recordings unless prompted not to until 2019—five years after the first Echo came out.

If that's not enough to deter you from sharing voice recordings with Amazon, note that the company allowed employees to listen to Alexa voice recordings. In 2019, Bloomberg reported that Amazon employees listened to as many as 1,000 audio samples during their nine-hour shifts. Amazon says it allows employees to listen to Alexa voice recordings to train its speech recognition and natural language understanding systems.

Other reasons people may be hesitant to trust Amazon with personal voice samples include the previous usage of Alexa voice recordings in criminal trials and Amazon paying a settlement in 2023 in relation to allegations that it allowed “thousands of employees and contractors to watch video recordings of customers' private spaces” taken from Ring cameras, per the Federal Trade Commission.

So it’s not paranoid to say that Alexa is listening to you.

I don’t have any of these devices but I’d throw them out if you do. Find a lower tech version from a different company. This goes far beyond AI stealing data - it’s stealing directly from your personal life and recording your conversations.

So,, AI, huh?

I might sound crazy here but I'm still going to speak up because I'm genuinely concerned for my country.

Hi, I'm a Malaysian student (:

Over the past two years or so, the rise of AI has been quite,, concerning. And as of now, AI has advanced a lot. So much so that the education department in certain countries including mine are pushing AI into our studies.

And this is a problem. A huge one in fact.

I am not a fan of generative AI. It's destructive. It's destroying my hobbies, culture, ecosystem, and- slowly but surely- my studies.

The KPM (Education department of Malaysia ) has been pushing out these,, events about generative AI.

Here are some of the examples.

... And there has been multiple instances where my teachers and classmates used Chat GPT for class/ homework.

Even my mum- who's doing her degree uses Chat GPT religiously and my father supports it so much.

And some TV channels have started using AI in their azan or advertisments.

What I'm- trying to say is that. Using AI to do everything for you is bad. Using AI for art competition is bad. Using AI for EDUCATION is bad.

My future is at risk. I want to be an English teacher, please don't let it be just a dream. I don't want to just, go to Chat GPT for studying. I don't want kids in the future generation to be even more addicted to screens and fake intelligence.

Nobody's speaking up about it as much as I do, there are so many things wrong with Malaysia but nobody cared enough to try to fight against it

And I know our neighbours are also struggling so please listen to all of us.

did you play the game? genuine question, how many of you have played dbh and the lesson you learned was “we need to embrace ai” because that is absolutely not what it’s about.

humans are the ones responsible for the sentience of androids. they’re the ones responsible for their slavery and creation. they’re the ones who made androids to serve them, to make their life easier. and when they fought back they regretted funding their creation. because now, their exploitation, previously aimed at humans, can’t be justified anymore.

people like ai because it allows them to be lazy, carefree. you don’t have to learn how to draw, you don’t need to refine your tools or your your art style when you can just ask a program to generate a piece for you. you don’t need to learn how to write, come up with prompts, spend years finding your style and fixing your vocabulary, go through phases of horrible and cringeworthy writing, because guess what? you can ask chatgpt to write it for you.

and when corporations discover that they will use it to their advantage, replacing humans with ai. so 30 years down the line, when a machine enters your work force, does your job 10x better than you and lands you homeless, of fucking course you’re going to be angry and android hating.

the issue that dbh addresses is (in that universe) blaming sentient ai for the evil that corporations commit. again, they created ai, they created it so that it has the possibility of being sentient, using it to do jobs no one wants to do, take it even further and make them do jobs (arguably) to replace marginalised people who need those jobs. so the “bad guy” in dbh aren’t the rightfully angry citizens, who have no concept or understanding of deviancy, and it’s not androids either, it’s fucking elijah kamski. and all the other fuckers at the top. they create infighting between workers to distract from class differences.

if ai became sentient it’d absolutely be morally wrong to mistreat them, because they have consciousness and emotions. being anti ai is being against narrow and generative ai which is 1. bad for the environment 2. is theft!! not fucking hypothetical robots who possibly have feelings. improve your media literacy people.
