But people's reasoning will often be "hanges gender is up for interpretation" I want to know where that interpretation came from and why tho? The character that's very purposefully depicted as ambiguous with their gender, is mostly referred to either neutrally or masculinely and opts for masculine clothing options.. I personally dont see why you would choose to perceive them as completely a woman. Hey, if you were to give me genuine reasoning why you like to perceive them as a woman, I may not agree with you, but I'll hear you out!!! However if you tell me "it's up for interpretation" "i can interpret her gender how i want" and end your reasoning there, I'll know that's very likely not why and you're just saying that to have plausible deniability and dismiss any criticism that people have. Yes‌, in fandoms people headcanon characters as genders other than what they are canonically, i very much do this regularly. But this is *giving* queer/complex gender identities to characters who lack it, as a form of representation. Not *taking it away* from them when they already have/are implied to have it. It's very rare to see characters who don't/are implied to not conform to the gender binary in popular media! I personally see myself and my identity represented so much in Hange especially! So it's frustrating to see people (cough cishet people) dismiss it and take it away from them!

It's just like, yeah, sure, hange could be a woman if you wanted them to be, thats *fine*. But why are we as a fandom so hugely opting for that and treating it like it's solid canon facts. Treat it like what you say it is and what it actually is: an interpretation. It isn't canon!! Isayama was very particular about Hange's gender being vauge/not defined!! I personally see Hange as something outside the gender binary, their gender is queer in nature to me. That is my interpretation, it's not canon either. Hange's gender ambiguity (their gender ambiguity, not any possible queer identity) is the canon thing. Although I do think use of they/them and gender neutral language *is* more in line with how they are canonically portrayed.

Also, I see people say "oh well she has boobs so as far as I'm concerned that's a woman" (I know you're just an ass if you're saying that. Boobs ≠ woman hope we are clear on that. but also) is it crazy for me to say that's debatable? Yeah hange has definitely been depicted with boobs (especially when WIT was animating, they got feminised a fair bit in those seasons) but a lot of the time, hange's drawn/animated with a flat (or at least a much flatter chest). If anything is "up for interpretation" I would say it's hanges boobs LMAO.

It's a sort of dual-faceted protection. Like other places, it's mostly to protect the soil from being trampled on so that it stays as porous as possible and can retain water (especially for newly planted trees). The more cultural reason is that certain trees hold auspicious and spiritual value to us, so we would want to preserve them by limiting disturbances (though most of those won't be found in urban environments). There's a big movement in certain cities to revitalize green spaces for both cultural and climate reasons.

As for your second question... I've spoken a little bit about gendered language in Thailand [X] The problem, for me, doesn't really exist in what you could call language 'norms'. Because pronouns/particles (ฉัน/ผม | ค่ะ/ครับ/จ๊ะ) are, more increasingly, used interchangeably OR what are classified as "female" pronouns can be used as 'acceptable' gender neutral identifiers. The problem is how certain people react to the use of gendered language in more modern expression. Does that make sense? Collectivist views and traditionalism look down upon non-adherence to gender correlated language, in a lot of instances. The fact that our culture was established from patriarchal perspectives doesn't help.

I don't know if I'm comfortable or ready to talk about my personal experiences (some of which were very unpleasant) living as a non-binary transgender person in Thailand, especially in online spaces, but I hope that I can get there one day.

Please don't feel pressured to compensate me in any way!!! I'm not asking or expecting to be rewarded for sharing my cultural insight. I've been working at an autism center for just about 6 months now, and for that time I've been so proud of the work I'm doing and the overall goal this center strives towards that I forgot ABA therapy is still very much considered an enemy and torture for autistic people.

I don't know if my center is an anomaly in the world of ABA or if the tumblr users i saw commenting on a post about ABA aren't aware of some fundamental shifts takkng place, but the descriptions they used were so incongruous to the work i perform that I had to look up to make sure we are talking about the same therapy.

This blog has almost zero reach and I know I'm shouting into the void, but I guess my point in making this post is just. When i worked in a public school, i *wish* i had half the tools i have now. My job focuses on bridging the gap of communication between our learners and the world around them, whatever that gap may be. We get our learners school-ready, but what that means isnt "dont flap your arms" or "dont be so noisy." It means "hitting your teacher when you want something isnt okay but here is an acceptable way for you to communicate and reach an understanding." "Biting will not get you what you want, but pointing will." "Throwing yourself on the floor because you cant eat 5 cupcakes for lunch wont get us to change our minds about nutrition but hey if you take a bite of this apple you can have a bite of a treat afterwards."

(That being said, our non-preferred food programs are, in my opinion, not very necessary, but no one is forcing the foods down the kids throats. If they dont eat it, then they dont get the preferred food item. That's all. Access to other neutral foods is still perfectly acceptable.)

We dont use punishments, those are unethical. We use positive and negative reinforcement. Mostly positive. Tons of praise for socially acceptable behavior (again, im not talking about stims. We dont care about stims. Kids can flap, spin, clench, use chewelry to their hearts content. I'm talking socially appropriate as in not hitting or scratching someone. Using signs, AAC devices, or appropriate language for communication. Peeing or pooping in the potty (because yeah im working with 4, 5, 6 year old kids who arent potty trained yet)). Each kid has their own reinforcement schedule based on a variety of factors, and they have access to so many different toys, activities, and sensory objects. We let the kids tell us what they're motivated for, and from there we work on the things that will allow that child to safely and successfully integrate into a school setting. Oh, and all of our kids get 1:1 support so that the therapy is very much centered on them and them alone.

I know ABA has a sordid past. I know there are people out there today who use it reprehensibly still. I just hope that people are aware how the field is changing for the better. The company i work for has centers all throughout the midwest. What we do is not ideal for every autistic child -- we're actually trying to convince a kid's parents that we are no longer a suitable environment for them because at first they progressed wonderfully but then they became bored and their maladaptive behaviors increased instead of decreased. But for the kids who our programming is a helpful thing? Their parents cry in relief telling us how their kid isn't screaming/scratching/biting anymore. How they can take their kid to the grocery store without them running away or throwing themself on the floor. How their kid can now share toys and play with their siblings.

ABA is no longer the blanket enemy it used to be. So i guess dont just write something off immediately because "oh they use ABA? They're EVIL then!" And the UHC policy to limit access to ABA treatment can actually hurt families who desperately need help with maladaptive behaviors that are harmful to the kids, their peers, and the family itself.

I’m deeply sorry you feel this way and perhaps none of us have explained our stance on it clearly enough, so i think ill try. As needed pieces of context for this, i am a CSA survivor, and some of this may be worded bluntly as im autistic but i dont mean any of it to be confrontational or condescending, please read it all neutrally at the very least.

In short, us trying to move terminology forward to be more descriptive and clearer about intent of these materials isn’t us implying that other survivors deserved their abuse, their exploitation, and their rapes. We are just survivors trying to move from terminology associated with adults having consensual fun to terminology that cannot be mistaken as anything but abuse and exploitation with the intent of not treating (child) rape and consensual sex with the same language and gravity. You and some other survivors choosing to use language many of consider offensive and outdated doesn’t mean that we think your abuse material isn’t actually abuse material or that you weren’t actually raped.

Point 1) We dont say that CSEM can’t be drawn, we say that art of fictional characters cannot be CSEM because there is no child being sexually exploited. You cannot exploit nor abuse a fictional character. Very obviously sexual art of an identifiable real life child would be CSEM, no matter how stylized, you are sexually exploiting them and their likeness. Realistic art of fictional characters is not CSEM, but it legally treated as such because the inherent danger it poses and the difficulty with which you could distinguish it from CSEM.

Point 2) The association with the word “porn” implying consent doesn’t actually apply retroactively to sexual abuse materials, and it never has. When we say “porn = consent” we mean that sexual materials filmed with consent is porn, and if it was NOT filmed with consent it cannot be porn, and is instead sexual abuse material. We need to separate consensual erotic material and abuse, both socially and legally (which particularly uses outdated terminology constantly), and we are trying so fucking hard to do that. We already have swaths of radfems spreading the “porn is rape on tape” and “all porn is rape” rhetoric and muddying the waters of what is abuse material and what is porn.

Point 3) No, we don’t think your abuse material is not all of a sudden consensual because someone calls it a term other survivors say is wrong and offensive. We are saying it shouldn’t be called that in the first place because it doesn’t accurately describe what happened to you in that material.

Point 4) No, we don’t believe that pornstars are incapable of being raped or incapable of being raped on film, but we do believe that any resulting material isnt “porn”, its sexual abuse material. I dont know how you came to this conclusion, but anyone who believes a pornstar cant be raped because at other times they recorded consensual sexual activity is a fucking asshole. Thats not how consent works. Its also an asshole move to call someone a pornstar *because* they were raped on film.

Point 5) Insisting on calling filmed consensual sexual activity “porn” and rape/assault “abuse materials”, once again, does not magically change one into the other because you called it that. These terms are used to describe what the material actually is, not vice versa. “Revenge porn” is called revenge porn because it is the nonconsensual spread of materials that were filmed consensually for the purpose of revenge. It is spreading sexual materials in which all people involved consented, but they did not consent to the distribution. Thats why its called that, and its an appropriate name for it.

Point 6) Recordings of people being raped shouldn’t be called porn, we should be calling them sexual abuse material. Same point I’ve reiterated several times. Someone using an outdated for their own abuse material doesn’t all of a sudden mean they believe themselves to have consented now, and no one else is implying that they were no longer raped because they used such a word. Again, don’t know where you saw this.

Point 7) I don’t think anyone has ever implied that child sex abuse/exploitation material isnt used for predators to jack off to. Its kinda in the name…… children are being exploited and abused for sexual purposes. Again, i really don’t know where you got this idea. Calling it CSAM doesn’t reduce what happened or for what purposes, and neither does CSEM. The reason we use CSEM more commonly than CSAM is because the former is more all encompassing. All sexual material of real children is sexually exploitative, but not all sexual material of real children is abuse (read, the art of real children we talked about previously. While exploitation, the child wasnt sexually abused to make it).

Its not to say there is no love for one another but I mean, if you want to criticize how Carlilse thinks being a vampire condemns him to hell and then continues turning people, I mean I can at least make the argument that he was saving someone's life in a sense. But Sasha turned Tanya because she was in some way related and she wanted the company of another female. Tanya was from what we know okay with the transformation so I could see that she probably learned whatever language Sasha grew up with. I could also see Tanya not necessarily teaching Kate or Irina and wanting to keep something special between Sasha and herself.

I think Tanyas transformation changed something in Sasha, I think the curiosity of living with another vampire changed into a desire she may not have known she had originally. I think she wanted to become a mother. Maybe even felt like she was robbed of that chance like Rosalie feels. So a hundred or so years pass and they come across Kates caravan and they stop to feed. Sasha sees Kate is loyal, willing to die to protect the person she was assigned to most likely knowing it was useless, she also sees Kate bears a striking resemblance to Tanya and you know what? Tanya could use a sister right? This is where things a bit awry. Keep in mind none of these girls are children except maybe Irina, I cant check they took away the free online book I was using as reference 🥲 anyways. I just cant buy that all three women again, except maybe Irina, who grew up with families and lives were just happy with Sasha taking them away simply because they look related. All of this is to say, I dont think Kate ever shared her language with anyone until Garett. I also think that she stayed with Sasha and Tanya because, where the hell else was she going to go. Even though she was in her twenties I could see Sasha and Tanya treating her like a grumpy teenager. And Kate probably doesnt mind the label. Her and Tanya probably fight quite a bit, until she develops her powers. Then I think they just leave Kate to her devices.

Then comes Irina. Irina is supposed to be a peasant girl from a farming village, so I could see her maybe really attaching herself to the family story she gets shoved down her throat. I think Kate being so short and probably the actual younger sibling gets Kate to come out of her bubble. Irina brings out a protectiveness in both of the other sisters and it brings to a more neutral state, at least in the sense that they can be in the same room without hurling remarks at eachother. They absolutely know her native tongue just to make the transition easier. I do think once Sasha is punished by the volturi they stick to one language, and since they settled in Alaska they probably learned some Inuit and English. I do think in order to flirt with Laurent, Irina tried to speak french but her accent was pretty strong and thats why Laurent found her endearing

I think since these kinds of vampires cant sleep (which sounds so miserable pls) I think they probably pick things to learn about so I'm sure they are fluent in more than one language even if it may be hard to bring to memory. When it comes Carmen and Eleazar I think the Denalis definitely knew enough spanish to probably communicate with them but with the world changing and Eleazar being in the Volturi, they were the ones to adapt how they spoke. But I feel like Carmen thinks out loud and mumbles when shes upset and most of the time, she does this in spanish.

Trigger warnings for dehumanization, racism, and genocide

As you can probably tell I've thought a bit about human perception of ourselves and other animals and what really makes us different since I don't think sentience/sapience is a mark of species supremacy or whatever. Why murder is Very Bad but killing animals without good reason is Less Bad? Why we hold more love for some species of animals and contempt for others? Why do people find Pinocchio plots so compelling? Why getting hit by a car and surviving means doing our best to save them as mercy for humans, but 'putting them out of their misery' as mercy for animals? Why is senseless violence less bad when it comes to animals and atrocious when it comes to people? Why is killing bad but being omnivorous or carnivorous is morally neutral? Or why being called an 'animal' is supposed to be an insult (because younger me Did Not Understand that because animals aren't bad (and also categorically speaking humans are animals))?

One of those things is why people who try to excuse stuff like racism and genocide with (extremely racist language warning) calling their targets 'animals' or 'not fully human' or just straight-up 'not human' and why it's such a prevalent tool for the oppressor,

Because when you think about it logically it doesn't make sense. Even if they were doing these atrocities to actual non-human animals, that doesn't make it okay or right. Humans wiping out entire types of animals off the face of the Earth is most definitely A Bad Thing, both because of the unnecessary brutality and because it's really bad for ecosystems. So why does dehumanizing propaganda suddenly mean it seems okay to cause mass death and suffering? Why would anyone think either of those things (mass death to people or to animals) are okay?? Why is anyone so desensitized to such unreasonable violence??

And I think it has something to do with how a lot of humans perceive themselves and other humans. Because of the us vs. them mentality that I think is a result of evolutionary need to protect ourselves from the dangerous parts of nature. I think that's the thing that gets weaponized as "humans are superior because they're Us." That's what causes people to care less about other animals than they do other humans, because it's a lot harder to kill a predator in self-defense or to hunt animals for food, if you're grappling with empathy for that creature. I think a balance is necessary, like when a hunter pays respects to the animals they hunt, but that requires thought and consideration for something unlike yourself, and that tends to be a lot harder than just getting yourself to have complete apathy when hunting for self-preservation. And that lends itself to becoming very dangerous when justification for violence changes with what you perceive as necessary, and when your perception of 'us' changes. Because if killing animals is fine because they're not human, then what's to stop you from killing anything you see even if you don't need to just because they're not 'us'? And what's to stop you from seeing other humans as okay to kill because they're not like the conception of 'us' that you've built up in your head?

Justifying atrocities with dehumanization, in my observation at least, seems to be a result of human selfishness taken too far, of dismissing the unity and need for diversity that's absolutely necessary for survival and more, and of constructed apathy.

...Wow I didn't think I had that much to say on the subject but here you go I guess. To be fair, this has genuinely helped me unpack and unlearn a lot of harmful internalized stuff. Of course, I'm open to others' views and constructive criticism.

(this is a vent and I get nasty so possibly don't read)I've got no idea as to why this has become a thing recently or how to properly articulate myself rn but here I go: When I analyze characters I don't just look at how their actions are framed, i take off the frame. I take off the edgy and dramatic lighting and the very emotionally charged/biased language, the edgy outfit they got put in and I look at what they actually did what actually happened, i look at their actions alone (well not alone I still need context) and that has me being labelled media illiterate. 'the story said they where a bad guy! Look at how they are being framed! Look at what language they used to describe them! The story is telling you they are bad' and like I know that, I know im supposed hate them but when I look at there actual actions and what they've done without the frame they aren't that evil to me, i know what im being told but i dont buy it because once you get past very loaded word choices and the unflattering picture the creator used... They aren't doing anything bad in the photo, it's just at a bad angle. when you replace the emotional language and make it more neutral language (without changing the story) and you can see plain as day that.

King magnifico wasn't a villain, he's just an asshole with emotional issues, Ironwood while a villain was being demonized for the wrong reasons, he was facing an ethical dilemma alongside team rwby no matter what the show did neither side was 'right' nobody was gonna come out of that shit smelling like roses no matter if you were pro ironwood or pro rwby (maybe the writers could've learned something from ever after high about these sorts of situations you know the show for little girls handled shit like this better) and belos and the collector feel very contradictory? Like very different people each time we got some development from them. The fans who got excited over the idea these two where more complex than story states weren't being stupid, they saw the compelling ideas and interesting contradictions and got excited, and if I like a character that's supposed to a hate sink maybe I'm not stupid maybe the show didn't do its job right, maybe I don't want the writer to hold my hand maybe I want them to explain the story better and maybe I don't wanna do wikipedia homework to understand the show.

Fellas is it a sign of media iliteracy to not take the story at face value and eat what we are being fed without looking to see the ingredients or if its properly cooked? I genuinely got convinced by the owl house fandom that I was stupid for having complaints that I was clearly incapable of the higher thinking required to understand the story and if I didn't like it I clearly wasn't analyzing things deeply enough but when I did analyze the story deeper I found even more issues, my problems originally where with the coven system, coven heads, Darius and Eberwolf turning out to be secret rebels and the fact luz and hexside broke a major law with zero repressions and that Belos's plan was weak, analyzing deeper made me realize the magic system was weak and while i had massive issues with the finale already (fuck the dream sequence light glyph nonsense, and i hated the titan reveal because of the chosen one nonsense especially the titan saying he did make philip's life harder on purpose- which made the fact that he. Still discovered the glyphs impressive) i said I could still watch the show pre finale but after looking deeper I noticed the 'us vs them' mentality was through out the show - not just the finale i didn't like that philip's complexity got erased or that Luz was a chosen one and again i fucking hated the dream sequence, the light glyph nonsense was confusing, (that also helped me realize if the magic system got developed more maybe they could've introduced a mechanic that explained that shit) i also hated that the principal at luz's school was framed so badly- I'm autistic im latina i am a lesbian- im not an ableist racist homophobe- i would've demanded Luz get in school expulsion, and if she got into another incident that she go to summer school, and do community service or i would press charges- still a pretty light punishment but God he was not a bad guy I only saw that problem in the finale when I was told I was dumb I decided to try and reanalyze the show again and came out with an even more negative opinion

Like fam the ONLY time you should ever say that is if maybe a non binary person requested it. And even then, if you looked into it for so much as a minute youd know that a non binary hyspanic would normally go by LatinE.

Like guys. Look into the gender neutral language invented by actual spanish speakers in Latam because there are efforts to make it from the actual people here and in general. We use the same rules spanish usually has but we substitute the usual A or O for an E. And even then there is some level of gendering required in nouns. For example as weird as it might sound, the term Non Binary is in itself gendered. Since “Binario” is a masculine word, but that is not relating to the individual its just how words are.

Generally speaking if gender neutral pronouns and terms are present, they are with an E as that has been basically labeled the gender neutral letter and its only really required in peoples prefered pronouns. Since the masculine is 99% of the time perfectly fine to use as gender neutral, because remember its not about actual gender. Say, the word for Masculinity is femenine (LA Masculinidad). One can make the personal choice to replace it with an E but it is an E, not an X.

This is more complicated obviously, E can also be masculine, “trabajadorEs” for example. So its better to just learn the basic more standardized rules of gendered spanish in order to the UNgender it. Which is an important point. As well as knowing what words you can and cant ungender without breaking everything.

I for example, only use these pronouns upon request, meaning refering to specific people. “Elle” is the generally agreed upon gender neutral pronoun for people. I dont know many non binary people so I dont use them often. But I hear generalizations like “Todes” often enough.

There is a way to make changes in the spanish language for further inclusivity, but those are not and will never be up to americans or non spanish speakers. In Latam Non binary is much less a fluid non comformity and more of a “gender number three” and our language is made to work with that.

This post takes the E into account, so its got that. So I dont think this is nearly as big of an issue as when they just straight up get it compleatly wrong. But still, Latinx is used way more than Latine, so its still important to say.

“Delete it, and leave.” Ranboo said, looking down at the three who were currently tormenting you. You never in your wildest dreams expected Ranboo to punch someone, he was so sweet and charismatic, very passive and neutral. The funny thing is that they take it back later within the article so I suppose the title's intent is indeed just to superficially irritate Greece - as Turkish press regularly does these days - and nothing more.

For example, look what happens in the first paragraph, under the bold title:

At the very least, the main article does not repeat the title’s claim that this was Alexander’s birthplace whereas it does repeat that Mother Teresa was born there, which is correct. It also mentions her Albanian descent.

Can you believe... that this is an actual travel article... about a foreign, a Slavic city??? The travel journalist went there to see Turkey #2, Ottoman lands, not Skopje. By comparison, the word Slavic is not mentioned at all and the adjective " “ Macedonian” " - which apparently Turks claim to support - is used only once. I mean, apparently the city has a significant Ottoman past but is that how the capital of an independent country is supposed to be presented in press that is claims to be friendly and / or neutral? Honestly, it's both funny but also a little hair-raising, even for me. I know for a fact that nationalists from certain neighbouring countries rub their hands at Greece's tensions with Turkey, because apparently (and tragically) they believe they are gonna win "something" if Greece loses and they don't realise they are simply next on the menu. As it's evident here but in numerous other cases as well, the Turkish state does not care about the name and history controversy between Greece and North Macedonia, neither does it truly have any sort of argument for siding with the latter. Siding with them is simply their way to provoke Greece and progressively patronize and extend all sorts of "fatherly" Neo-Ottoman influence over docile North Macedonia. Well, "progressively" is a bad term as it's already happening there (and elsewhere) and the country seems to be receptive so far, probably because they don't think it can go too far or maybe they don't even dislike it going too far. I don't know or care, they are accountable for their choices, we all are. If they like what Turkey is trying to do or if they don't realise it, well, it's their business. So far they are too busy making statues, wax figures and tomb copies for Ancient Macedonians to be concerned about such trivial issues.

Skopje as a city has its foundations in a pretty old settlement nearby, Scupi, that belonged to the Paeonians and later became the capital of the Dardanians for a while, before it passed to the Romans. so the other day I (25NB, white) was on Twitter, where I'm v active as well as my two best friends who we'll call Tess (25F, black) and Laura (24F, Mexican). we've been friends since we were kids and tbh I rlly appreciate them both.

Laura has offered to help us learn Spanish on a few occasions. I said yes ofc! Tess repeatedly said no bc she considered thats cultural appropriation and she thinks Laura should protect her culture. Tess also berated me because "white people aren't allowed to speak Spanish", but eventually she changed her mind and apologized after Laura said that she loves it when people show interest in her own culture and language, that white Spanish-speakers exist and that a healthy cultural exchange can help people of different cultures understand one another better.

so Tess and I started to learn Spanish with Laura's help as well as Google translator. and that day I searched for "non-binary" and it gave me two translations "no binario" and "no binaria". in other words, in masculine and feminine. I felt invalidated and angry so I tweeted "I hate Spanish so much". Laura was upset by this and replied saying she knows it can be a frustrating language to learn to non-natives but that I shouldn't insult her language. I tried to play it off saying that I don't hate Spanish language, I meant to say I hate the Spanish, the people of Spain. for being colonizers and all that.

this only made Laura angrier because apparently, more than 90% of Mexicans have Spanish blood since the colonizers chose to stay in Mexico. Laura was clearly hurt, she said that she won't hate a part of herself, that she won't hate Spanish people who are alive today, and that one of her online friends is Spanish (Tess and I are her best friends but Laura also has a group of online friends from different Spanish-speaking countries. I know she has a Puerto Rican friend and a Venezuelan one but I didn't know they had a Spanish friend in the group). I apologized and I genuinely meant it. I also admitted I was talking about the language and not the people.

Tess is clearly against me and supports Laura bc she said something like "I guess you can never fully trust white people" and Laura replied "no, white people aren't the problem, white Americans certainly are". I've apologized and I will do so again if I have to. I literally reacted the way I did because I felt invalidated, I don't hate Spanish or Spanish-speakers. I'm scared of losing my two closest friends, I apologized but other than that idk what to do.

The two of you just started making your way around the building when suddenly a very familiar voice came from Chuuya’s prized hat.

“Chuuyaaaa!! It was about time you stopped being a chicken, Chibi!”

Removing his hat from his head, he started yelling at it not knowing exactly where the listening device was planted.

“TEME! HOW DID YOU—”

“And (y/n)! I would congratulate you, but I think I would rather offer you my condolences. Why him?! He’s just a slimy slug. OOH OOH how would you like to join me in a double suicide?! A shame it won’t be a lover’s suicide but it’ll annoy Chuuya so I think it’ll be worth it! ”

“YOU—”

“And please don’t kiss while I’m listening in. You made me lose my appetite! And it was such a shame! I was eating crab using Kunikida-kun’s money! Do you know what you’ve cost me?!”

“DAZAI YOU PIECE OF—”

“Ah! Kunikida-kun is here! I have to go!”

You can hear something is the background that vaguely sounds like, “DAZAI YOU WASTE OF BANDAGES STOP USING MY MONEY”

“DAZAI DON’T YOU DARE LEAVE IM NOT DONE WITH—”

The click sound from the hat revealed that Dazai disconnected.

Chuuya twitched and glared furiously at his signature hat hating that the voice he hated the most came out of it.

“Aww, I didn’t get to talk to Dazai-san”

Chuuya whipped his head towards you, a look of mock (or real) betrayal showing on his features.

You laughed at him before taking the hat out of his hands and placing it on his head.

He shyly looked away before muttering a thanks making you smile wider. Just as the two of you were about to start walking, a small explosion erupted from his hat; it was likely that Dazai made the listening device self destruct.

“DAZAI YOU BASTARDD”

At the Armed Detective Agency, a certain suicidal maniac hid from the wrath of his current partner as he thought about the wrath his old one.

“Hmmm I wonder if Chuuya would finally stop wearing his ugly hats if I blow all of them up...”

five years too late let’s analyze this. the commentary has gotten me back into gravity falls reigniting thoughts and insights i came to years ago

i love everything about this commentary in general it hits the points of humor, genuine analysis of the characters, but most of all im so glad hirsch addressed that the droid not detecting any fear from dipper here doesnt make any scientific sense because that was a massive CinemaSins moment for me

IDK the fact that dipper can fucking stand after an airship crash because theres a bigger threat at hand is literally one of the defining capabilities owed to adrenaline lol...... IM SORRY im a biopsychology student if i dont point that out iwill seethe and die because that was just . its a grudge ive held for a long time about this episode but didnt rant about because it was something so minor and i’m sure nobody would care.

i was 13 when this episode came out and i’m almost 19 now, i had a special interest in biology and i still do but now i’m actually having college classes in biopsychology so i can give my arguments more oomph now. and i have to say, now that i know more about the brain and autonomic nervous system the more this scene bugs me, if that was even possible. and it says a lot of dipper and ford’s relationship.

if dipper clearly wasnt calm before, why would he be now just because he’s put up an outwardly confident facade? before he was in the flight but now hes in the fight. my boy just rode on top of a spaceship by nothing but a magnet gun that could detach at any time if it failed and then the ship crashed, he sustained injuries, is in emotional turmoil because he thinks his uncle is Fucking Dead and the threat of a security droid that detects adrenaline is on his tail and produces a Big Fucking Gun in response to dipper saying “i hAvE a MaGNeT gUn” and hes screaming and has his teeth clenched but sure there’s no adrenaline coursing through his body in that moment i can totally believe that

when dipper asks what happened, ford says “the orb didn’t detect any chemical signs of fear, it assumed the threat was neutralized and self-disassembled” but i don’t think measuring someone’s heartbeat alone is particularly relevant in detecting ... chemical signs of fear?? they dont really tell you this shit but noradrenaline (and maybe adrenaline too if the acetylcholine from sympathetic outflow always activates the adrenal medulla??, theres two pathways) is always active in small quantities to make sure your parasympathetic nervous system doesnt slow your heart to dangerous levels on its own, regardless of your emotions. it’s just a homeostatic mechanism. your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are CONSTANTLY modulating control of your organs on a see-saw, literally with every breath you take. simply standing upright causes specialized mechanoreceptor neurons in blood vessels to signal your brain to project signals to release catecholamines via the sympathetic nervous system to constrict your blood vessels so that blood is able to reach your brain and not pool in your legs. i have a deficiency in my body’s ability to adapt to this which is why i know so much about it. if i stand up my heart races to compensate. i’m not feeling fear, my body is just adjusting—albeit grossly and incompetently lol.

but what im saying here is that the security system is flawed. it’s a cool idea to have security droids detect fear, but in practice by detecting adrenaline, and not even directly by detecting the molecule itself—it’s done in a roundabout way by reading the heartbeat, could be a recipe for false alarms. like what if someone’s on beta-blockers. that’s not really an adequate way to measure “fear”; there’s so many variables that could interfere with the measurement the farther you abstract from what you’re really trying to detect. and besides, adrenaline is NOT just a sign of fear, it’s just for preparing the body for action. i know the sympathetic nervous system and adrenaline is constantly linked with the “fight-or-flight” reaponse to a stressor, but 99.9% of the time the sympathetic nervous system is used in your life is to balance out your parasympathetic nervous system to maintain homeostatic equilibrium for mundane things.

i think detecting amygdalar activation would be more efficient in detecting fear. the amygdala sends projections to the hypothalamus which then in turn modulates the autonomic nervous systems. but the amygdala is intensely activated specifically in response to a fear-inducing stimulus (it does activate in response to other emotions but they’re mostly negative and is most activated by startle and fear), and wouldnt be highly activated by many other confounding variables like measurement of the heartbeat could be. the amygala is one of the first stops directly from external stimuli.

to show you how integrated the amygdala is as the first step in registering fear after receiving input from sensory stimuli let’s look at the auditory-amygdala connection for example

see how the auditory thalamus projects to the primary auditory cortex and auditory association cortex? the cortex is where conscious awareness of what the stimuli is comes from. this is the “high road”. it goes sensing -> perception -> emotional response. but sometimes you can be startled without even processing what it is you’re sensing, like the startle response of an alarm or a phone ringing in a quiet house before you even register what it is. this goes sensing -> emotional response, without perception happening until after you’ve already felt the startle. that’s when it takes the “low road”. here’s a simplified version:

even if that were the case with these droids though it’s obvious dipper is still fearful on some level here. his body language, voice, expressions all give it away. for the amygdala, aggression isnt too off from fear so it would be detected equally.

the reason this is so important is because ford uses this as evidence for why dipper is special, “i did it?” “you did it. this is what i was talking about, how many 12 year olds do you think are capable of doing what you’ve just done?”

but like....did he really? i’m not saying this to shoot dipper down or make him out to be more of a wuss, he was incredibly strong-willed here and i dont want to take that away from him because it WAS growth on his part. but the underlying psychophysiological reactions of aggression and fear shouldn’t be that different and this was a total asspull. maybe the droid was so old that it fucked up. maybe dipper being covered in grime and dirt made it harder for the droid to measure the correct heart rate through photoplethysmography (im assuming since they use a camera and are non-contact).

and in all honesty everything i just said brings into question the interpersonal healthiness of ford’s judgements, what he thinks, his expectations, and how he communicates that. in this video alex already talks about how ford is projecting onto dipper. and i think ford may be projecting his expectations for himself onto people who are not him, and the fact that it’s on dipper here makes it far more unfortunate. you realize how much this boy idolizes ford, right? how much impressions matter? dipper even tells himself before he leaves in this same episode, “all right dipper, this is your first big mission with great uncle ford. don’t mess this up.”

even though it’s unstated, the implicit message dipper is perceiving from ford based on their dynamic is: “do you have what it takes for me to be proud of you?” and to accomplish this he must be like ford, even though he’s clearly not and he knows this. he says “i don’t think have what it takes. i was tricked by bill, i was wrong about stan’s portal, heck, i can’t even operate this magnet gun right.” then, by simple chance without even knowing what he did, he activates the magnet gun and pulls out the adhesive, which immediately takes the focus away from what dipper was telling ford about his feelings of inadequacy to ford saying, “yes! dipper, you found the adhesive!”

these thoughts of dipper’s hang in the air without resolve or comment from ford. we don’t know what ford would have said. but it then becomes painfully self-evident in the scene immediately after when the droids emerge and ford tells dipper, “they’re security droids and they detect adrenaline. you simply have to not feel any fear and they won’t see you”, to which dipper replies with an exasperated (and rightful) “WHAT?”

dipper goes in a panic trying to indirectly tell his uncle that this isn’t something he can do. and he is completely right and valid to be freaked out by that full stop. that IS crazy. you can’t control your fear. you can control how you interpret that fear in your higher brain regions but the physiological changes will stick around for longer than it takes to cognitively calm down. it’s easy for me to detach from my emotions to analyze them, but being able to do this does not come naturally for everyone. even i have an irrational fear of wasps and i can’t control it by detaching myself, my body is just automatically primed to get the fuck out of there. i know it’s stupid and i know it’s irrational and isn’t helpful to get myself worked up but i literally can’t stop how my body reacts no matter how i cognitively think about it. expecting composure from dipper in a situation like this when he’s being made to consciously be aware of his anxiety is absolutely fucking insane. look what you did, placing these cruel expectations on him, now he’s afraid of being afraid! this isn’t a case where two wrongs cancel out, they just stack on top of each other.

there’s a good reason these scenes were put side by side but it seems up until now it had remained unanalyzed.

what dipper fears from ford is disappointment. not living up to his uncle’s (quite frankly badly placed) expectations for a twelve year old with anxiety. not once did ford say or subliminally communicate “i don’t expect you to be able to do what i can since you are not as experienced as i am and that’s perfectly okay, no judgements”. you don’t put a child on bike before training wheels. you don’t throw a kid into a swimming pool without giving them swimming lessons. the way ford is doing it, there’s no room for trial and error or mistakes that are an opportunity to grow and learn; instead, it’s life or death. he only seems to pride dipper on what he can do while ignoring the underlying struggles that plague him and never making it known it’s okay for dipper to fail in front of his hero and that he won’t think anything less of him for it.

and that’s why i found the ending scene for dipper and ford’s adventure in this episode to feel so.. wrong. on a scientific and social level. because by the sound of it ford focused more on what dipper had done to dismantle the droid (the droid not detecting any fear) instead of how dipper displayed love and protection for him even if he was truly afraid. what if the science was accurate and the droid detected adrenaline while dipper was confidently standing up for his uncle. would ford still be proud of him regardless?

sapnap is a WHORE for cuddles. if it where up to him, you two would just lay in bed all day, tangled in each other’s arms. after a long day, he just wants to hold his favourite person and fall asleep with them, so he just wraps his arms around your waist while he uses your chest as a pillow. but if he’s in a chatty mood, he’ll just talk your ears off, ranting about something he finds interesting, while you’re all snuggled up in the crook between his neck and shoulder.

I mean, come on. it’s sapnap. we all know he does. he gets *excited* very easily, which can sometimes get in the way when you two are just trying to cuddle. he just has such a soft spot for your body and has to have his way with you once certain ideas have entered his mind.

nick would definitely try his best. honestly you don't care if his plans actually turn out the way he intented them to, it's the thought that counts. and nick knows that. but theres just something about you that makes him want to spoil you and treat you like a princess. so prepare yourself for fancy dates, him making you your favorite food, all that type of stuff.

arcade date arcade date arcade date. sap is super competitive and I feel like he would thrive in an arcade. he would play it off like he was just trying to proof how good he was at the arcade games. but he'd just love to see how hard you would be trying to beat him. obviously he'd let you win a lot, and when he collected enough tickets, he would get you the biggest prize he could find.

it....depends???? lmao. nick CAN be super gentle with you, he’s pretty protective of you and would never want you to get hurt, so he’s definitely very careful not to do anything to hurt you. but sometimes his instinct just kinda takes over and well, he can get pretty rough.

he just thought you were so ~cool~. like he immediately knew he wanted to be your friend. he was just so in awe of how funny, chill and charismatic you were. and it literally took two days for him to develop a crush on you. his friends would notice this right away and tease him about it so much omg.

YUP. nick gets jealous so easy yup yup yup. jealousy, protectiveness, possessiveness, you name it. you two would often get in fights about this, but most of the time you would just think it’s cute how riled up he gets. he doesn’t get mad at you (because you’re his precious little baby and can do no wrong in his eyes :D) but god help the souls of whoever tries to flirt with you, because they’ve got a hell of a storm coming.

K=Kisses (What type of kisses do they like/give?)

god nick’s such a passionate kisser. or at least he can be lol. he loves the way your face fits into his hands, and how soft your lips are. so he definitely is a fan of just some wholesome passionate kisses. but damn this man gets sloppy when he wants to. his lips constantly trails off to your jaw, neck and collar bones.

i feel like his love language would be like a mix between words of affection and physical touch??? he’s definitely very verbal with his love for you. he doesn’t shy away from saying i love you or letting you know how much he appreciates you in any other way.

there are certain moments where nick just sits back, watches, and realizes how amazing his life is. and how grateful he is to have you. for example, you were playing minecraft on his pc, and your house kept getting blown up by creepers, he found it adorable how mad you got every time. he just watched you play, while sitting on his bed. after a while, you looked over at him, and caught him staring. “what?” you asked after letting out a soft chuckle. he felt like he was gonna explode from how much he loved you.

i’m getting very strong “baby” and “doll” vibes from nick. he loves baby-ing you and smothering you with other loving nicknames. just any petnames that show how much he loves you he’s all for. he would also love calling you “pretty” or “beautiful” for obvious reasons. 

O=Over  (What happened the one time you ‘broke up’?)

nick HATES fighting with you, but once you two get into an argument he can get pretty carried away. he’s definitely the type to let his emotions get the upper hand on him. raising his voice a lot, stuff like that. but the second you leave to get some space he just breaks down. sliding down the wall and resting his face in his hands, just letting all the emotions out. he never meant to hurt you. when you came back to him, ready to be enclosed in his arms again, he had a hard time letting you back in. he just felt like he didn’t deserve you after he treated you like this. it took some convincing, but once you broke down his walls again, it was like he gave you all the love in his body. just smothering you with “i’m sorry”s and kisses.

he loves holding your hand. especially in public. if you’re in a crowded space, he just holds onto you very tightly as not to lose you. or if you two are just going on a walk together, his hands would just feel so warm and soft around yours. and omg he loves it when his hands are in his pockets, and you put your hands in there with him, and intertwine your fingers with his. hmmm he gets so soft when you do that.

i- uh- I MEAN HE WOULD TRY he really would, and again, that’s all that matters. I feel like he would be the type to try to prepare a whole surprise dinner, he would cook all the food himself, he would set the table all cute, with candles and shit, but just completely ruin the surprise by accidentally giving it all away by saying something or just behaving very obviously suspicious. 

S=Sad (What are they like when they’re sad?)

he just gets really quiet. he would never want to bother you or be a pain in the ass by complaining to you. but obviously you notice when something is wrong with ur bby boy. a sentence like “are you okay?” or “what’s wrong?” would immediately send him over the edge, burying his face in your chest, trying his best to supress his sobs. but he eventually calms down, and once he does, he’s able to just rant to you about whatever is bothering him.

i feel like it would really depend on his mood, like he could be either SUPER chill, just wanting to savour the time you two had together. or he could be really hyper, constantly talking, wanting to do all kinds of activities with you. he’d be the literal definition of :D

very. i just get such empathetic vibes from him. he’s such a good listener and he’ll just listen to you talk whenever you have something to be upset about. he never invalidates your feelings and omg he’d give the best advice. 

V=Value (What do they value most about the relationship?)

he loves that he can 100% be his self around you. there’s no part of his personality that he feels like he has to hide, or tone down, whenever he’s with you. you also aspire him to be his best self, he just wants to be the best boyfriend in the world. all his friends have noticed this too, you bring out the best in him.

eh. if you’re a person who really values marriage, he’d 100% do it for you. but it’s not like he HAS to. he gets a bit scared by the idea of this whole big event, where everything is about you two, he would way rather celebrate the love you two have in the comfort of your own home, just the two of you. the one thing he would love about a wedding, would be seeing you all dolled up, walking down the aisle, omg he’d be the proudest man ever to be able to call you his.

the SECOND you start to feel sad or depressed in any way, nick notices immediately. he knows you better than anybody else, and he knows exactly what to do to cheer you up. it’s like his superpower. if you’re feeling anxious he’ll just wrap his arms around you really tightly, holding on to you until you calm down. and when you’re sad, and in need for something to cheer you up, he’ll take you outside for a walk in the park, or he’ll just sit in bed with you, watching your favourite show.

he hates when you flirt with his friend, even when you’re very obviously joking. his jealous ass can’t deal with that lmao. he also gets super pissed when his friends make flirtatious jokes towards you, they know how much it gets on his nerves and that’s really the only reason they do it. but omg he gets so pissed when it happens.

nick would be the cutest sleeper ever omg. he doesn’t like to admit it, but he loves being little spoon. he loves resting his head on your chest, while you play with his hair, patiently waiting for him to fall asleep.

i dont agree with this, actually. not everyone has to believe what we believe about ourselves, that is true. they dont have to believe it, just respect it. and changing the language they use is a good way to show that.

is someone cant do the bare minimum of not calling you a human when you arent one, what does that say about their character, about your relationship with them? maybe they dont understand, sure. but if you tell someone "hey im not comfortable with you calling me that", the correct response in that situation would be for them to say "oh shoot sorry, what would you rather be called then?", not "well i dont believe your discomfort is real so i will keep calling you that". thats just an asshole move.

sure, some species-neutral alternatives ive seen can be a bit silly, but you cant really change how someone feels about a word. you dont even have to change your whole language, just, you know, dont call people what they dont want to be called. thats all we ask.

i think its ridiculous when other ppl in the otherkin/fictionkin community demand language be changed en mass- like referring to everyone on earth as humans isnt the end of the world, not everyone has to believe what we believe abt ourselves
