Where is the buzz for this book? Chosen Ones is an adult fiction novel by Veronica Roth - a slight change from her usual YA. Readers of YA should also enjoy this one. “What happens to your life after you defeat the enemy of the world as a teenager? People move on - except the paparazzi and the gossip mags. How do you make friends or be a regular person? Five teenagers - Sloane, Matt, Albie, Ines and Esther - defeated the Dark One a decade ago. Since then life has been hard, especially for Sloane. She can’t shake the funk of what her life has become. She misses the magic and having a purpose. And after Albie’s death, three of them are pulled to a different place where magic is common...and the Dark One might still be alive...” What a story from Roth 😮 She gives us a look behind the scenes of a group that once had great power and puts them in a different environment. I loved the world building of Genetrix. The Drains are terrifying. Some great action here. And I loved the messy ending. It was mostly unexpected but works here. Great story and great characters from Roth. Thanks to @netgalley and @houghtonmifflinharcourt for the ARC. #chosenones #veronicaroth #netgalley #houghtonmifflin #advancedreadingcopy #magicalrealism #bookstagram #bookshelves #bookswithcharacter #bookhoarder #bookworm #sodacityreads #bookreview #bookcollector #bookhaul #bookspines #goodreads #homelibrary #fiction #thriller #bookcollection #kindlecollection #beachread (at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEHXDiFALF4/?igshid=1hjl4o4vrvgh1

tarnation
(tär-nā′shən) New England & Southern US n. The act of damning or the condition of being damned. interj. Used to express anger or annoyance. [Alteration (influenced by tarnal) of darnation.] Word History: The history of the noun and interjection tarnation illustrates a phenomenon called taboo deformation, by which words that can be considered offensive or impolite under some circumstances are made more acceptable or softer-sounding by altering one or more sounds that make up the words. Tarnation appears to be a variant of darnation, itself a taboo deformation of damnation, in the same way that darn is an alteration of damn. Tarnation, however, seems to have been influenced by tarnal!, another mild oath that is derived from the adjective eternal—as used in eternal damnation! for instance. The taboo deformations darn, darnation, and tarnation have been used in New England since the late 1700s. American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fifth Edition. My Year of the Book - Day 84: Wallace Stegner’s influence on the many writers he helped develop while in charge of Stanford University’s creative writing program is well documented. But Stegner’s good friend George R. Stewart, who taught across the bay at U.C. Berkeley, saw at least one of his English students find success in print as well. Idaho native Milton Lott, who began his initial novel in one of Stewart’s classes, went on to earn a Houghton Mifflin Literary Fellowship to complete the work. Published in 1954 as “The Last Hunt,” it was the first of three books based on the final days of the great buffalo hunts and hunters in and around the author’s native Idaho and the Montana territory. Said Stewart of his former student, “Milton Lott displays as promising a talent as has appeared in his generation.” “Hunt” was followed by “Dance Back the Buffalo” and “Backtrack” (1959 and 1965). Reminiscent of A.B. Guthrie’s best works (Day 71), Lott’s novels were well-reviewed and highly regarded by other writers for his authentic & sympathetic recreation of one of the most abrupt changes in the West; the near destruction of the buffalo herds in the late 1880s. #bookaholic #reading #ilovereading #firstedition #bookish #booknut #bookgeek #bookworm #book #westernhistory #westernwriter #rarebooks #georgerstewart #buffalo #bison #miltonlott #ucberkeley #houghtonmifflin

Recipes for potato and poblano rajas salad, coco lime margaritas
Tumblr media
Next Friday is a day I am looking forward to. It’s Cinco de Mayo, and my birthday. The 5th of May initiates the summer season for me, rather than Memorial Day, and I like to welcome my favorite season with a flair, especially as I celebrate this milestone birthday.
Many think Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of Mexico’s independence, but it is not. It is the day in 1862 when the Mexican Army surprisingly defeated the French in the Battle of Puebla. What I find interesting is that it is celebrated more in the United States than Mexico, although it is a big celebration in Puebla.
Piñatas, flags, music and Mexican fare make for a festive occasion. To help you and I plan the festivities, I looked through “Mexican Today: New and Rediscovered Recipes for Contemporary Kitchens” by Pati Jinich (Rux Martin Books/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, © 2016, $30). It is a colorful book from my cookbook collection that delivers a fun way to do Mexican. The author created this book from her passion for her family and her native Mexico and its ancient, modern and evolving foodways. She notes the changing Mexican cuisine in the United States. Contemporary Mexican cooking consists of far more than tacos, enchiladas and other familiar foods. Much like American cooking, the cuisine of Mexico is a living organism, vibrant and constantly changing.

PLANTAIN TACOS WITH WALNUT, PEPITA, AND SUNFLOWER SEED CRUNCH
Tumblr media
Text and photos excerpted from Mexican Today, © 2016 by Pati Jinich and Ellen Silverman. Reproduced by permission of Rux Martin Books/HoughtonMifflin Harcourt. All rights reserved.  SERVES 5 PREPARATION TIME: 10 minutes COOKING TIME: 35 minutes MAKE AHEAD: These tacos taste best if you eat them as soon as the plantains come out of the oven. The pumpkin seed crunch can be made a couple of hours ahead.  These wholesome yet rich-tasting soft vegan tacos filled with chunky, savory refried beans and caramelized ripe plantains will please everybody at your table, including the most fanatic meat taco aficionados. My mom and I came up with the recipe the last time she visited us. We paired the refrieds with the plantains and topped them with a crunchy mix of toasted walnuts and pumpkin and sunflower seeds tossed with seared scallions. Don’t hesitate to drizzle a liberal amount of quick salsa verde over the tacos.
2 very ripe plantains (about 1½ pounds)
1 tablespoon olive oil
6 to 8 scallions (white and light green parts only), thinly sliced
1 jalapeño chile, finely chopped (seeded if desired) or to taste
¼ teaspoon kosher or sea salt or to taste
½ cup coarsely chopped walnuts
¼ cup hulled raw pumpkin seeds (pepitas)
¼ cup sunflower seeds
1½ cups refried beans, homemade  or store-bought
10 corn tortillas warmed
1 recipe Quick Salsa Verde (recipe below)
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.  Roll the unpeeled plantains on your counter for a few seconds to really soften them up. Line a small baking sheet with aluminum foil and place the plantains on it. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the plantains are completely cooked, have broken through their skin, and are lightly browned on the outside and caramelized. While the plantains bake, heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the scallions and jalapeño and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the salt and stir well. Make room in the center of the skillet and add the walnuts and pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Cook for 30 seconds, without stirring, then stir the seeds into the scallions and jalapeño and cook, stirring, for another 2 minutes. The walnuts and seeds should be lightly toasted. Remove from the heat.  In a small skillet or saucepan, heat the refried beans over medium heat, stirring often. Remove from the heat. Cover to keep warm.   Peel the plantains while they are still hot and slice or chop them.   Spoon a couple of tablespoons of refried beans onto the center of each tortilla, add 3 or 4 slices or a couple of tablespoons of chopped plantain, and top with a couple of tablespoons of pumpkin seed walnut crunch. Drizzle salsa on top. Eat while hot!
QUICK SALSA VERDE   MAKES ABOUT 2 CUPS   PREPARATION TIME: 10 minutes  COOKING TIME: 15 minutes  MAKE AHEAD: The salsa can be made up to 4 days ahead, covered, and refrigerated. Salsa verde is one of the basic items always found in a Mexican restaurant or home, because once you have it, you can’t live without it! It is used as the base for multiple dishes, such as Tamal Casserole with Chicken and Salsa Verde (page 183). Just spooning it over sunny-side-up eggs makes a perfect light meal of huevos con salsa verde. Good and easy to make, it's a great garnish or topping for tacos, quesadillas, and many antojitos.
2 pounds tomatillos, husks removed and thoroughly rinsed
2 jalapeño or serrano chiles
2 garlic cloves
½ cup coarsely chopped fresh cilantro leaves and upper part of stems
¼ cup coarsely chopped white onion
¾ teaspoon kosher or sea salt or to taste
Combine the tomatillos, chiles, and garlic in a medium saucepan, cover generously with water, and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Cook for 10 to 12 minutes, until the tomatillos go from pale to olive green and are thoroughly tender but not falling apart. Drain.   Transfer the tomatillos and garlic to a blender. Remove the stems of the chiles and set 1 chile aside. Add the other to the blender, along with the cilantro, onion, and salt, and puree until smooth. Taste for salt and adjust if desired. If you want more heat, add some or all of the remaining chile and blend together. Serve.

I just started reading Empress of All Seasons by Emiko Jean and it is so, so good. I’m loving all three of the perspectives, and I can’t wait to see where this story takes me. 🍂 Apparently, I like to make weapons out of tea leaves. This is Mari’s naginata! Mari is the fierce female perspective that I can’t wait for all of you to meet. ❄️ This book comes out November 6, 2018! Synopsis: Each generation, a competition is held to find the next empress of Honoku. The rules are simple. Survive the palace’s enchanted seasonal rooms. Conquer Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. Marry the prince. All are eligible to compete—all except yōkai, supernatural monsters and spirits whom the human emperor is determined to enslave and destroy. Mari has spent a lifetime training to become empress. Winning should be easy. And it would be, if she weren't hiding a dangerous secret. Mari is a yōkai with the ability to transform into a terrifying monster. If discovered, her life will be forfeit. As she struggles to keep her true identity hidden, Mari’s fate collides with that of Taro, the prince who has no desire to inherit the imperial throne, and Akira, a half-human, half-yōkai outcast. Torn between duty and love, loyalty and betrayal, vengeance and forgiveness, the choices of Mari, Taro, and Akira will decide the fate of Honoku in this beautifully written, edge-of-your-seat YA fantasy. 🍂 #EmpressofAllSeasons #EmikoJean #hmhteen #HoughtonMifflinHarcourtBooks #HoughtonMifflin #yallwest #asianfantasy #diversebooks #yareads #hmhco #bookblogger #booknerd #bookstagram #advancedreaderscopy

Starting off the day with some more #bookmail. Not gonna lie, I had never heard of this before it showed up. It looks like my kind of book though. It will be out in April from Houghton Mifflin! • What are you guys up to today?? • Synopsis • Reggie isn’t really a romantic: she’s been hurt by the world too often, and doesn’t let people in as a rule. Plus, when you’re dealing with “the Three Stages of Depression,” it can be pretty much impossible to feel warm and fuzzy. • On a CVS run to pick up her Zoloft, Reggie meets Snake, who doesn’t give her much of a choice. Snake has a neck tattoo, a Twizzler habit, and a fair share of arrogance, but he’s funny, charming, and interested in Reggie. Snake also has a 7-months-pregnant ex-girlfriend, Carla. Good thing Reggie isn’t a romantic. • As she begins to fall for Snake, Reggie must decide whether loving him is worth the risk of letting him in. Reggie, Snake, and Carla all grapple with the meaning of friendship, love, and depression—and realize one definition doesn’t always cover it. • #bookstagram #definitionsofindefinablethings #whitneytaylor #houghtonmifflinharcourt #houghtonmifflin #book #books
