I loved Spinning Silver, and had a blast reading Blake's fanfic spin on it. Mirrors play an important role in the story, and I couldn't shake the idea of embedding a mirror into the front cover of the book.
To make a bind as extravagant and lush as befits the story, I etched the mirror with fluoride salts using a stencil and foiled the rest of the silktex moire cover. I vector edited decorative lettering from a font by Alit Design for the title page and used full bleed spreads in the typeset. With careful coaching from Duran binding, I marbled the textblock edges.
I was so happy to gift this book to the author at yallwest this weekend.

Would you ever consider coming to yallfest?
I would love to go! It's a bit tricky because authors have to cover their own travel/hotel costs, so it wouldn't make sense for me to go right now unless I've been invited as part of the official lineup. (And at this point I've actually got another commitment that weekend.) I'm also based in Seattle, so YallWest might be a bit more viable. But it doesn't hurt to let the festival organizers know you'd like to see me there next year!

I owe it all to my wonderful mom for winning me this beautiful @owlcrate edition of “Book of Night” at yallwest. In honor of her truly being the bestest 🫶, I am reposting my review from last year!
✩🌘🕯️Review:
I cannot even begin to express how much I love Holly Black’s adult debut novel! “Book of Night” is SO good!
The story is told from multiple perspectives, many of the chapters alternating between the past and the present. I really enjoyed watching obscure details only briefly mentioned in the past end up playing a larger role in the mystery that unfolds in the present. Black masks the breadcrumbs she leaves with her wonderful prose and elements of urban fantasy, making the plot twists all the more shocking!
The world Black creates in “Book of Night” is complex and unique. Humans that are “shadowless” are rumored to be missing a piece of themselves. Humans that are still in possession of their shadow are able to try their hand at accessing shadow magic, the first step in becoming a gloamist. Gloamists are able to pursue different magic disciplines. Carapaces focus on their own shadows to do things like fly or armor themselves. Masks concentrate on unraveling the secrets of the universe. Puppeteers send their shadows to do things in secret. Alterationists manipulate the shape of shadows. Representatives from each discipline are chosen to form the Cabal, a group that regulates shadow magic and hunts and traps blights (shadows are not attached to anything). All in all, I found the idea of shadows being conscious extremely fascinating. I was completely sucked into the story by Black’s detailed descriptions of the magic system and the shadows themselves.
Charlie Hall, the main character, is very intriguing. She can’t seem to ever escape trouble. Instead, she embraces chaos, which I really like. She is smart, quick on her feet, a master thief and great liar. Based upon the cliffhanger at the end of “Book of Night,” I have a feeling that Charlie won’t be stepping away from a life of crime anytime soon. Holly if you are reading this, I need book two asap!!

wld love to one day make friends in the publishing industry (be they writers or editors or agents or reviewers or what have u) but i am so so deeply bad at making and sustaining relationships that r primarily online. now i hear u all saying “but gray ur four best friends live in different states and u met them via tumblr and dnd and u managed to make and sustain a friendship w them for like 6 years now” but i think that was a fluke bc i have not been able to replicate that ever since. and i see all these instagram posts of authors/publishing professionals that i admire + who r around my age + who seem to share my interests so i feel like we might get along, and i see them all hanging out together at yallwest and other book events, and it looks like so much fun and i always think “whoa i sure would love to have a friend group from coworkers like that some day!” but ive been in publishing since 2019 and i still have 0 (zero) publishing friends. i talk to a few people every now n then in twitter replies or discord msgs but extremely far and few between and never enough to build a genuine friendship bc the moment anyone tries to talk to me i freak out and shut down and self isolate. so anyway i dont think ill ever have an author friend group the way so many other people seem to have and sometimes i think my solitude is okay but i cant help but feeling like im missing out on smth valuable

★ Happy Pride, friends and foes! Which books are on your TBR this month? The last two months I’ve *somehow* completed @bookwnoname and @readerinthefog’s #BookReadHappyHour monthly challenge, and the other night I stacked my TBR for June’s challenge! This month is all Pride inspired and I already have a good head start on my list! I’ve finished three (short) books that are all queer in some way, though I’m only counting one of those for the challenge: I *finally* read This Is How You Lose the Time War yesterday! This is my TBR for the challenge: 1. Make it gay, Number One: This Is How You Lose the Time War 2. Queer has always been here: A Lady for a Duke 3. Honored for a Stonewall award: Last Night at the Telegraph Club 4. Bi? Bi.: One Last Stop 5. Stealth is the way: A Memory Called Empire 6. Genrequeer: The Book Eaters 7. Final Gays!: What Moves the Dead 8. Mood reader wild card: Queen Takes Rose My mood might change this list up a bit, but I’m excited to jump into all of these! I’m tracking the challenge through @storygraph! @illumicrate’s April box featured this pin banner (by @niallcgrant) inspired by Robin Hobb’s Realm of the Elderings. I am forever grateful for items like this because I never know what to do with my pins! 🫣😅 It features the January 2021 pin inspired by Winter’s Orbit and designed by @stacey.mcevoy.caunt and my Pride pin from @yallwest 2019! ★ HASHTAGS //⠀ #bookstagram #illumicrate #illumicrateunboxing #bookbox #illumicrateapr2023 #fantasybooks #pridemonth #flatlayfriday #happypride #bookaesthetic #readfantasy #becauseofreading #booksofig #booksofinstagram #bookpics #booknerd #goodreads #bookstagrammer #booksofinsta — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/AjFeWfH
