I'm excited. Someone FINALLY made a film version of "Are You There God, It's Me Margaret?" This was my all-time favorite book, when I was twelve.

✨ autistic memories ✨
I saw they're making a movie of Are You There God, It's Me, Margaret, and I remembered how absolutely baffling I found that book
I wasn't identified autistic till I was 40, so there are a lot of memories I have that make a lot more sense to me now than when they happened, or when I've recounted them without that vital context. AYTGIMM is apparently one of those, though I hadn't thought about it in ages
I read it right about the time I went through puberty, so ages 10-12, and I just.... didn't get it? why were these girls so obsessed with painful nonsense? I hated my tits, they were already too big and hurt all the time. I didn't care about anyone else's period, and only cared about how awful mine was, and didn't understand how no one else was in bed with cramps for 24-48 hrs at a time
and that one girl who, like, lied about it? what was that about? why would that make you - I don't even know, was she popular because of it or something?!
but if course, now that I know about the autism, it all falls into place: those social cues are stupid, I'm not getting involved in some made up neurotypical bullshit, I have stories to write. of course I'm baffled: these weird rites of passage mean less than nothing to me, they tap into weir hierarchies that I refuse to participate in, that I will never understand

I've been watching Resident Alien with my sister. My bi little heart flutters at Judy who gives chaotic bi energy like no one's business. I think she's in love with D'Arcy. But fanfic (AO3) has failed me.
Hopefully there's something here in the depths of Tumblr.
