So. I imagine. They both want to get married but both feel a little weird about marriage due to their previous marriages not working out, so there’s a little hesitation from both of them. Ted is your classic traditional guy so he knows he wants to eventually, he just wants to give himself some time to like, build up to it. Then he imagines actually being married to trent, being able to call him “my husband” and him wearing a band that shows he’s committed to ted, he imagines standing in front of all their friends and committing himself to trent and he’s like ok. Actually. I can’t see a life where this doesn’t happen for me. Let me work it into my plan, I’m going to propose on christmas by giving him a gift that’s just a ring in a box that says something like love of my life, marry me. He has a plan. He’s going to make it all soppy and ridiculous.

But trent? Trent is already like. I want to marry him. I’ve never been married to a man, I’ve never been married to someone I loved like this. I want to commit myself to him through a ceremony, I want it so badly. But he gets a little bogged down in knowing that this won’t be the first time that ted has committed himself to someone else and it’s like, he’s trying not to see himself as a consolation prize, he knows ted loves him. Ted has taken all the big steps so far, with his confession and inviting trent to move in with him, trent wants to take a step this time on his own, and let ted commit himself to him and really trust him when he says he loves trent, that he’s never loved anyone the way he loves trent. Trent’s like I need to tie that man DOWN so he doesn’t run away while ted is like. So firmly tied he can’t move. Trent’s not the smartest when it comes to ted what can I say.

SO i IMAGINE that trent would get a simple silver band and worry a little that ted might not want to wear it or might not want to wear it during games or training or whatever and holds off on giving it to him for ages. He’s like, should I get him a chain to wear it around his neck? No that’s stupid lots of people wear wedding rings, nevermidn that ted did for years and years. He can just give ted a ring. So he like, scours sites and jewellery shops and plans endlessly about when the right time to give it to him is. they just sort of go about their daily lives and no one really drops hints to trent (because they're dropping hints to ted, expecting ted to pop the question. but ted has a PLAN and trent moving in after only a year was so far ahead of his plan he's having to reassess it, he's like i can ask trent to marry me in another year which means i should only ring shop in nine months because otherwise i'll just ask him. way too soon.)

trent ends up talking to someone, probably mae, and asking what she thinks about wedding bands for men who have active jobs and she's like something simple but timeless, a simple band, ted looks good in silver. and trent is like yeah i can do that. and buys one the next day (after sneakily measuring ted's finger, lol)

and trent just carries it around with him, knowing how much ted loves romcommunism and both their confession and him moving in weren't quite the perfect romcom moments and he wants to make it perfect for ted. like the right time will happen, he's just waiting for it.

and then he forgets his jacket at the club because the weather is getting nicer and it's hot out and beard gives it to him and looks at him like O_O until there at the crown and anchor or something and ted goes to the loo and beard is like hey are you planning to propose to ted or are you still married or something and trent's like what? do you think this is hollyoaks? and beard is like hey that's a quality show with some real brilliant drama and trent's like no i want to propose it's just - ted is better at this, he knows when i'm ready, he's good at reading me, he’s good at making these moments special, i'm worried if I ask him he won't be as excited as I am, or it won’t be the propsal he dreamed of.

and beard is like how have you been dating him for this long and you don't know he'd jump at this. like literally jump. he'd be through the roof. Any way that trent decided to propose. Trent could say it right after a loss and ted would lose his mind. He'd want to change his name.

And trent is like well I can’t propose while he’s thinking about his ex wife. So he lets it go and they just have a really nice time being romantic in paris drinking fancy parisian wines and having a lot of sex

The next thing trent plans is a lil picnic thing, he sort of sucks at planning these things so he stresses a lot and asks for help from keeley so it’s like. Jamie Lomas is a extremely hot British soap star actor on the English show the young, edgy and soapy Hollyoaks for a whole new generation.

I see Price as a man who doesn't let himself have much - especially with the chaos of his life - so finding someone who appreciates him enough to stress and worry over getting something as mundane (to him) as the curve of his lower lash line right, or the angle of his beard, the shape of his lips, the veins in his hands all right and perfect because it means something to them would be quite overwhelming (in a very good way) to him. He'd probably get very emotional, and need a minute to himself to collect his thoughts, but he'd probably remember every note. Each detail.

He'd suddenly make things a lot easier for you to focus on. If you're having trouble with his profile, he'd turn his head whenever he caught you studying him. He'd pause longer between smoking his cigar if he noticed you scribbling away in your sketchpad.

If he was feeling bold, I'd imagine he'd buy you a new sketchbook, and jot down some of the answers to your burning questions on the first page. A cheeky little, if you wanted a model, all you had to do was ask, love, added at the bottom.

I can't tell you how utterly obsessed I am with this entire idea! 🥰 The idea of John sitting in a chair while you draw him, teasing you about how you always make him look like that crazy block from Hollyoaks, and just indulging you and being relaxed and open and soft is such a dream.

A Hollyoaks Debrief

some thoughts I have on Lucas/Dillon/Frankie

-re:the episode where Dillon breaks up w/Lucas, he's definitely guilty and avoiding owning up, but it's like he's punishing himself before Lucas even has the option to leave and break his heart back

-These hayray plots are silly and classic, predictable soap ideas, but if I'm treating this plot like it's good + looking at their relationship from an analytical standpoint, it makes sense for the underlying issues in their relationship. could've gotten there a different way, but... Before the jump, the stuff coming back up now seemed pushed under the rug, though they'd grown simultaneously. I always expected a breakup: Lucas has always been less experienced than Dillon; he's literally his first relationship. The aftermath w/him crying on Ste's shoulder, and the recounting of memories, that very much determine his own wellbeing confirms that he puts way too much of his happiness in Dillon and he treated him as the rock during his sexuality journey so soon after so much personal trauma.

-Lucas violent tendencies being brought back up 🙃😾😮‍💨😒; I guess it makes sense, again, from the standpoint of he never really dealt with it. I think when that horrible folly moment happened, it woke him up in a way that was quicker than if he would've kept going down that path, but Lucas has always had anger issues; going back to new Lucas' show entrance, he's never handled his emotions well and he never had any kind of remedy/help to cope that would be effective down the line (again, replacing Dillon as a remedy/relying on Dillon to determine his happiness...not good).

-The biggest thing I'm angry about with Dillon is that the joint storyline's with him and Lucas always put him in a villian arc...even though Lucas literally had a violent streak, but you could empathize with him due to everything they'd hinted with him. This is the second time they've done this where Lucas will be hurt...after Freya, with no exploration into how he's feeling/felt and what led him to soap shenanigans; there is no real reason why the Leah story arc is needed. (I need this guy to have a backstory on his dad or something where he's crashing a car for the plot, getting into situations but not enough for unreasoned troublemaking for once). like, if we look at his character trajectory, Dillon's always been a little ignored and replacing that for being other people's listening ear or support (his family/his friends..). Actually, the more I think about it, they're both codependent, not just Lucas relying on Dillon and him feeling the need to care for him; but especially when they got together Dillon didn't have Misbah (as much)/Dillon lost friends/relationships over time. again, hate this plotline, but can't say I'm surprised that this is the route they took. (Dillon saying he was lonely and they both found comfort in one another was actually the least shocking thing this show's delivered me all year that I knew before that baby was even confirmed to be his)

-I think Frankie will end up blurting it out about the baby to Lucas when she's drunk

-unpopular but the only thing I wish with Frankie is Darren acted more supportive/solely on her side w/the JJ illness plot (sadly, it's realistic everything she's feeling now and JJ being a pos, but written with this illness). idk, depending on how they handle it, I don't think it necessarily justifies his actions unless they decide to use a narrative that does so, but I get how certain audiences may view him in a better light regardless of the show's narrative and how frustrating this plot is. god give Frankie a break. (I so so hope whatever decision her character makes, she gets to have a huge power moment/speech or something at the end that grants her revenge in some way).

The British actor, who broke out in Netflix’s spooky anthology series from Mike Flanagan, speaks to Tom Murray about his thrilling new movie ‘Jackdaw’, his pride at appearing in ‘Hollyoaks’, and why he thinks he’s ‘too emotional’ to play 007.

Ihave this thing in my head,” Oliver Jackson-Cohen is telling me. “I don’t know where it comes from, but I am always convinced that everything I do is going to be s***. So I’m always pleasantly surprised that it’s not as s***ty as I think.”

The London-born actor really doesn’t need to be so anxious. Since landing his breakout role of heroin addict Luke Crain in Mike Flanagan’s Netflix anthology series The Haunting of Hill House in 2018, Jackson-Cohen has proven time and again his skill at playing damaged goods. Whether it’s his sociopathic turn as businessman Peter Quint in Flanagan’s sequel series The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020), or as Dakota Johnson’s terrifying boyfriend in The Lost Daughter (2021), or as Elisabeth Moss’s see-through ex in The Invisible Man (2020), Jackson-Cohen has cemented himself as one of Hollywood’s go-to baddies.

But in his latest film, the 37-year-old is taking a stab at being the hero... sort of. Jackdaw is set against a bleak, wintry North East of England, with Jackson-Cohen playing an ex-motocross champion and army veteran who commits a crime in the hopes of starting a new life for his family.

The actor is the first to admit that the Jackdaw script was “fairly straightforward” for the action-thriller genre: a criminal job goes awry, family member gets kidnapped, man must save kidnapped family member. But he says that the film’s director, first-timer Jamie Childs, wanted to prove that genre films like these don’t have to be the preserve of the US. “He wanted to make movies that would be made in America in the Nineties, but set in the North East,” Jackson-Cohen explains. “He wanted to really showcase that and show that we can make these sorts of high-concept movies on small budgets in the UK.”

There are blatant American influences on the film – it’s all synths, rain and neon, like it’s been put under an Instagram filter named “Blade Runner”. I tell Jackson-Cohen that his character in the film, Jack Dawson, feels like a mash-up of Ryan Gosling’s criminal characters in Drive (2011) and The Place Beyond the Pines (2012) – brooding, morally questionable types with good hearts at their core. “Yeah, like a Northern, poor man’s Ryan Gosling,” he jokes. “Listen, I’ll happily be a poor man’s Ryan Gosling for the rest of my life.”

Jackson-Cohen has a face that looks like it’s been carved by Bernini, so it’s no surprise to learn he originally found success as a model. On the day of our conversation, he’s wearing a frame-fitting black jumper; his stubble is grown out but perfectly manicured, as is his thick brown hair, which is styled into a messy quiff. A 2012 Harper’s Bazaar interview conducted at a London hotel noted a “perceptible thrill” that “rippled through the female staff” upon his arrival. His looks, accent and 6ft 3in height have also made him a perennial fixture in predictions for the next James Bond. But Jackson-Cohen is worried he’d be “too emotional” to play the part. “It’s such an iconic character, isn’t it?” he says. So if 007 producer Barbara Broccoli were to call, he’d send her to voicemail? “Of course not! No one’s gonna say no to Babs are they?”

If he does end up firing guns and sipping martinis for a few years, Jackson-Cohen would be the first Bond to have appeared in Hollyoaks, the teen soap infamous for its annual Hunks and Babes cast calendars. He booked a single-episode role on the show when he was 15 – his first acting gig. “I remember getting the phone call and being like: ‘This. Is. It,’” he says, grinning. “Walking into school the next day I was so full of myself.”

After training at London’s Youngblood Theatre Company and then the famed Lee Strasberg Institute in New York, he began booking supporting roles in a number of American films you probably don’t remember: the Dwayne Johnson clanger Faster (2010), Anna Faris’s What’s Your Number? (2011), or Going the Distance (2010), one of Drew Barrymore’s lesser romcoms. He’s spoken previously about the grand expectations he placed on his early film work, assuming they’d propel him into the big leagues. He was shattered when they didn’t, leading him to take a nine-month break from acting.

The Haunting of Hill House, in 2018, proved to be a turning point. It was a smash hit, earned him a rabid fanbase, and helped launch him into a particular kind of recognition – something he describes as “Netflix famous”. “It’s quite an interesting thing,” he says. “You’re the most famous person in the world for a while and then the next show comes along and that completely takes over.”

Regardless, the role was not without catharsis for him. He has spoken about how his own experience with childhood sexual abuse and PTSD influenced his take on the character. He first discussed it in 2017, during the #MeToo movement, writing on Instagram: “[I] have spent most of my life living with PTSD, pretending it didn’t happen, and now, trying to rebuild what was shattered. The thing about sexual abuse is that the moment it is done, however brief or however long, it changes the course of your life permanently.”

I ask him how the part impacted him, and for the first time in our conversation, the actor’s geniality falters and his face takes on a visible strain. “I think, if you speak to any of us from that cast, those characters meant so much to us because we put so much of ourselves into them,” he says. Flanagan, he says, was “incredibly collaborative” and “allowed me to just take the reins with it and left me alone to do that.” He also knows the part struck a chord with audiences. He remembers being approached by strangers in public who’d share their stories of addiction. “I think ultimately all of us feel incredibly proud that it hit a note with people and it allowed people to open up a discussion, to feel like they could talk about this stuff.”

As soon as Hill House was released, Jackson-Cohen says he was sent “a slew of horror scripts” that were “all the same thing, just a watered-down, less good versions [of the show]”. He names Ira Sachs’s raunchy gay drama Passages, Jonathan Glazer’s new Holocaust film Zone of Interest and Justine Triet’s awards season darling Anatomy of a Fall as films he’s admired from afar this past year. “I don’t think there’s a formula of: you work with this director and this writer and then, success. But I do think you reach a point where you’re like, ‘Oh I do actually want more out of this.’”

He knows, for instance, that he’s seen a certain way by casting directors. “I’ve played quite a lot of toxic men. But I’ve become fascinated with the question of, ‘how do we humanise these morally corrupt characters?’ There’s a challenge in that, which I think is quite fun. But, like anything, you go through periods where you like to play a certain thing and then it’s time to move on.”

So no more baddies? He weighs it up.

“I think I’ve played my fair share now.”

Rewriting the Hay family storyline atm bc I hate it so bad and need it obliterated!!

First off...

Just some general edits to the set-up. Lucas is not in young offenders! Look, if we're gonna see Lucas lose his shit at JJ. I'd prefer if it was timed better and done on screen. Leah also does not have a baby because that is stupid. This rewrite also mainly focuses on Leah!! I love Lucas but he has definitely had his time this year. Leah is fun and underrated and I want her to have a storyline that isn't stupid and out of character.

Leah and Vicky are the main couple is this one.

I am not a HUGE shipper of this one tbh. But it has some chemistry and it's lesbian so who am I to complain really. Hollyoaks has ZERO lesbian couples and I'm writhing in pain. This was also partly an excuse to have Chappel Roan playing. They do have some trials and tribulations though (as is the Hollyoaks way)

Lucas works at The Loft.

I know why some people might think that's a bit ooc but I need Ethan and Lucas to be friends for this. It's either this or Dillon Junior James Michael Steven Barnes Hay-Ray The First so take your pick lol. I know he's underage (or I think he is???) but he'll be a cleaner and Ethan will babysit him during his shifts it makes sense guys.

At the start, Ethan and Vicky are together but Leah and Vicky are kissing and stuff behind his back

Again, I know why some people might not like this one but I think it's believable, especially for a show like Hollyoaks. I'm not a fan of Ethan and Vicky but I'm even LESS of a fan of Robbie and Vicky and they are not permanent anyway.

Leah and Vicky have a secret-situationship type deal

Not much I can say about this one tbh. Leah probably tells Lucas first, which is where the trials and tribulations between them start.

Lucas and Leah fight a bit

As I half-mentioned earlier. Lucas and Ethan are friends due to working at The Loft and all that. Lucas is not happy about Leah being with his friends girlfriend and they have a disagreement. Dillon notices that Lucas amd Leah aren't speaking and tries to talk to Lucas about it, but he can't tell Dillon the full story beacause that would inadvertandly out Leah. This devolves into a fight and then they can have some drama too.

Leah and Vicky fight

This is where the idea for this rewrite came from actually! Leah (at this point) has accepted her feelings for Vicky. Vicky has not. I know this giving HayRay flashbacks but...idk I can't really defend myself on that one 💀 anyway they fight about how this is affecting the bond between Leah and her brother, Vicky and Ethan and any stuff that may have happened between this. Casual by Chappel Roan playing in the background. This is non-negotiable I fear.

So that's basically all I have!!

I know this probably has some oversights and mistakes but this is honestly just the basics of an idea. Anyway, someone put me in that writers room before I go insane.
