how similar zuko and ozai look from side profile got me thinking:

i mean they have the same straight forehead, same brow, and the long and sharp nose. having a familial resemblance to the person you hate most in the world is real and it sucks. i imagine this bothers zuko for a long time, bc every time he looks in the mirror he's reminded of ozai.

until one day he gets socked in the face by an assassin and breaks his nose. ever since then he has a nose bump and he's very happy with it

I rewatched Zuko and Azula's Agni Kai recently and it's left me wondering – when Zuko begins to goad Azula into striking him with lightning, was he making the decision to kill her?

Because had Azula shot lightning directly at him like he planned and not at Katara, the most forthright implication to me is that he was intending to strike Azula with her own lightning. And Azula, for all her mastery, would not have been able to counter that.

On the other hand, maybe he wasn't planning to kill her at all and was simply planning to redirect it elsewhere (similar to what he did with Ozai). But given the tone of tragedy throughout the Agni Kai, the fact that they both acknowledge that this fight will be "the end" to them, I don't think it's inaccurate to read Zuko's actions as him preparing to kill Azula, even though an Agni Kai doesn't have to end with death (and in canon it didn't). Also, why goad her into striking him with lightning if he wasn't planning on doing something intentional with it? If anything, it adds another layer to the tragedy to me, because I don't believe Zuko wants to kill her. And it stands in such contrast to the way that Azula desperately wants to kill him.

I also think that there would have even been something sadly poetic in that sort of demise for Azula should the Agni Kai had gone this direction: Azula, struck down by her preferred sub-skill. Azula, struck down by the very bolt of lightning that she intended to kill her brother with. Azula, struck down by her own power.

For your post finals art request, how about something from your Zutara scars au? Maybe Zuko gently kissing the scars on Katara's hands, with Katara looking absolutely flustered.

Hi just wanted to let you know I’ve been think about Zuko in TtS leaving the fire nation and dissociating his way through his trauma responsibilities in Book 1 and how that parallels Aang in Book 1 of Atla running away from the temple to escape being Avatar and how Fall is associated with Air/Wind which is the element of freedom, and with Appa, one of the original Airbenders being present when Zuko realizes that he can just leave, embracing freedom, and the parallels are literally driving me insane it’s all I can think about I love it so much! Thank you so much for writing this, I have to keep resisting the urge to straight up write a book report on it and I have so much faith in you that the parallels are only going to get better and more in depth from here I love it soo much!

I'm sort of shocked that you of all people don't have more anti-aang fic recs.

Idk what to tell you. It's not like I'm avoiding those stories. It's just that my favorite writers either don't steer into Aang's worst traits, give him a growth arc, or don't bother including him much at all. I didn't set out for that to be the case. Also, I wonder how prevalent really, truly make-Aang-the-bad-guy stories are out there? Between the Zutara shippers who actually like him and the ones who don't want to be harassed by Aang stans, I'm not that surprised how few of those stories there appear to be. I'm hoping now that more people are starting to come to terms with how awful Aang was and how imperfect the show was, there will be more real juicy anti-Aang stories on the horizon. I'll probably be writing more, anyway.

zuko girl dad is canon with izumi and that's great and all but i raise you boy dad zuko who is terrified of becoming what his father was. boy dad zuko who isn't quite sure how to play with his son because ozai destroyed the idea of having a childhood. boy dad zuko who initially refuses to ever bend in front of his son for fear of burning him. boy dad zuko who finds his teenage nightmares returning after his son is born because when he looks into his son's sharp, golden eyes he sees flames and smoke and the face of a man who was his father only in name.

boy dad zuko who sits with his son at night and reenacts love amongst the dragons with different voices for each character and animated action poses. boy dad zuko who (reluctantly) pays the avatar three "sifu hotman" passes in order to let him and his son fly on appa over the palace. boy dad zuko who holds his son's hand and lets him sit in his lap and tells him that he will always love him no matter what he does because his love is not conditional, it's a given.

boy dad zuko who does his absolute damndest to be everything that his father wasn't and everything his mother could have been.

Oh hey, I have an AU, I forgot about that (lie)

I've had a similar idea in my head for a month now. It wasn't possible to do it last month, but no problem. May would make more sense. I did something with this little guy for 414 last year, and I wanted to do something with him again. April 14th of this year would not be possible, but May 14th or 15th? Oh yes. These dates are better because it was between these two (actually it was the 14th I think, but I consider both dates) days that I created this guy above! Consider this drawing a celebration made for…well, me. Of course, he wasn't created with the design above in mind. His original, main design is quite different from this alternative (and less original) iteration. The drawing above shows his current situation in the "current" moments of the RTTS AU.

His creation, which dates back to 2020, was the result of some Bendy-related thoughts of mine intersecting on the day. These being about new things in canon lore that came out at the time (plus speculation about this new information), a theory that at the time I started to understand better (which maybe based on the drawing, you probably know which theory I'm talking about ) and a funny bug found in one of the games (do you remember Ghost Bendy by any chance?) And then,boom. I created Atlas. I remember at the time I was thinking of other names for him because Atlas was just a codename that I had in mind to refer to him while I thought of a definitive name for the guy. But the codename ended up sticking. Plus, Atlas is a cool name and I wanted to give an OC that name.

Even though some details changed over time, I think I eventually managed to solidify his place in the AU. Not that his story is 100% thought out and completed. Hell, my AUs that I have are still not 100% thought out either, so what to expect from their characters. But I think that, currently, I have at least decided on the general idea of his place and purpose in RTTS, and I am happy with what I have come up with.

I don't know when the next time will be that I will show him again. In general, showing things from my AUs is not and probably will never be my strong point lol. But I'd like to draw him again eventually. So uhhhhhhhhhhh, one day. When that "one day" will be, it's up to you to decide

Happy Birthday Atlas. You and your other 2 alternative versions are cool to think about. Here's to another 4 years of chaos for you. 🙌
