I'm sort of shocked that you of all people don't have more anti-aang fic recs.
Idk what to tell you. It's not like I'm avoiding those stories. It's just that my favorite writers either don't steer into Aang's worst traits, give him a growth arc, or don't bother including him much at all. I didn't set out for that to be the case. Also, I wonder how prevalent really, truly make-Aang-the-bad-guy stories are out there? Between the Zutara shippers who actually like him and the ones who don't want to be harassed by Aang stans, I'm not that surprised how few of those stories there appear to be. I'm hoping now that more people are starting to come to terms with how awful Aang was and how imperfect the show was, there will be more real juicy anti-Aang stories on the horizon. I'll probably be writing more, anyway.
And hey...reblog with your fave anti-aang stories

Zutara, romance novels, and the female gaze
Okay so I’ve been thinking about the female gaze a LOT so I checked out a subreddit about romance novels, despite never having read one. I came across this meme (which was initially a Tumblr post and then got posted to Instagram and then to Reddit and I’m now bringing back to Tumblr — Internet telephone, pls never change):
And…what is The Southern Raiders, if not a platonic grovel? Katara’s pain is central to the episode. It’s central to Zuko. Zuko asks Katara what he can do to make up for his betrayal; she demands the impossible. He reads between the lines, cockblocks her brother to get the necessary information, and then waits outside her door overnight (which he also did for Iroh, the one person we know for sure he loves). He basically makes himself a receptacle for her rage, and he holds space for her by coming with her on her revenge quest and carrying their bags and not saying a damn thing about what she should and should not do beyond like…asking her to rest. And obviously the grovel works! She forgives him and then they’re thick as thieves, bantering and fighting and saving each other’s lives, etc.
On a different note, I’ve been told that enemies to lovers is one of the biggest tropes in romance novels, similar to YA lit and fanfic. Here’s something else I found in the romance novel discourse:
And…yeah. In TSR, Katara really does show Zuko her worst self, because she doesn’t feel the need to perform for him. She doesn’t feel the need to perform moral perfection OR cold blooded vengeance. She bloodbends in front of him and he just goes with it. She doesn’t kill Yon Rha and he just goes with it. He doesn’t treat her any differently afterwards. Maybe they talk about it off screen, but I kind of like the idea that they don’t, because Katara doesn’t need to explain anything. And it’s so interesting, because some people in the ATLA fandom have a totally different read on TSR. They think Zuko was encouraging Katara to get revenge (by what, keeping his mouth shut?), and that Aang is the one who acts as her moral compass. I believe that either Bryan or Mike said in the DVD commentary that Aang is the angel on her shoulder the entire time. And this interpretation does make sense if you see it from the male gaze, where Katara as an object of affection is acting in an angry, irrational, threatening way. But if you see it from the female gaze, you recognize that actually it’s probably the most emotionally taxing experience Katara has to go through, and she doesn’t owe it to be nice or perfect to anybody. Katara’s formative trauma literally comes to a head, and she has to make a decision — no, a discovery — about who she is in relation to the tragedy that defines her life and even her identity (as a waterbender, as a parentified child who becomes the mom friend, as a genocide victim), and she’s accompanied by someone who trusts her judgement and validates her feelings.
I’m not saying TSR is explicitly romantically coded, but when it conforms so well to romance novel tropes…is it any wonder that so many people thought “yes this is her man?” And then he takes lightning in the heart for her and reaches for her when he’s literally dying, I will never be normal about that either

I won't say I'm in love [Prince Zuko]
pg. 13, fluff | Zuko x gn! reader
synopsis; Zuko had never been one to express himself in the right ways, anger had always been his primary emotion. But, when he meets you, a rouge fire bender helping the Avatar, it becomes hard for him to accept the growing warmth in his chest every time you look at him.
cw; emotionally constipated Zuko, fluff, pining, Clueless Zuko, Zuko doesn’t know how to deal with feelings, awkward turtleduck, light fluff.
Masterlist
Zuko never had time to really sit and think about relationships. After spending his early teenage years on a wild goose chase hunting the avatar, and now having joined the Gaang, with only a week to teach Aang how to firebend so he could face Ozai, he had a lot going on.
However, when he had started to fit in with the gaang better, you had definitely caught his attention.
You were a firebender yourself, highly skilled and light on your feet. You made a formidable opponent in battle, your elegance and lightweight movements almost resembling an air-bender. Zuko couldn’t help but stare as you practiced basic maneuvers, your muscles flexing with every movement, the thin sheen of sweat on your brow, and the fierce look of concentration on your beautiful face. To say Zuko was whipped was an understatement.
You were the last to accept him into the group, having always been a bit of a loner and standoffish, you didnt trust him. Especially with him being the crown prince of the very nation that has caused you nothing but pain. So Zuko worked extra hard to earn your friendship. Doing good deeds like helping Sokka clean up camp, going on water collecting trips with Kitara, helping Toph with her hair, and of course, befriending Aang and teaching him firebending alongside you.
While Zuko was still miles away from getting close to you, he was running out of ideas on how to gain your approval. So, naturally he went to Sokka for advice.
“Its like no matter what i do, y/n still hates me! I dont get it, you guys all like me, you know i’m good now. So whats their problem?” Sokka looked over Zuko’s exasperated face, putting two and two together. Not that it was hard, everyone caught him staring at you like a creep once or twice already. “I dont think y/n hates you, honestly. Thats just the way they are. It took like, 2 months for them to really open up to us.” Sokka shrugged, smoothing his hair down. “If i’m being honest, you’re trying too hard. Seems like you got a thing for them.” Zuko gaped, staring at Sokka like he had grown another head. “What are you talking about!? I dont like them. I just want them to trust me!” But despite his words, the flush on his face betrayed his denial. Sokka raised his eyebrows. “Right. Okay. Why don’t you just talk to them? I mean, obviously what youre doing isnt working. Maybe you should get them a gift or something.” Zuko nodded to himself. Why hadn’t he thought of that before? He quickly stood up, a new objective in mind.
“Thanks Sokka.”
“Anytime, bro. And a word of advice, if you’re trying to make it less obvious that you like them, try not staring so hard. It creeps everyone out.”
“I TOLD YOU I DONT!”
“Yeah, yeah whatever. Get out before you burn my tent down.”
Zuko rolled his eyes, storming off with a deep flush on his cheeks.
The next morning he set out to the village nearby, wearing a cloak to disguise his face. He looked around the market, stopping by a jeweler, who had a whole array of different bracelets, necklaces, and rings. A peculiar necklace stood out to him. It held a beautiful ruby, plated in gold and held on to a thin, gold chain. Before anybody could see, he snatched it up, quickly leaving and heading back to the air temple before anybody could confront him. On the way back he stopped by a patch of fire-Lillies, picking a few to make a messy bouquet. “Y/n will like these.” He muttered to himself, trying to tie them together with an old piece of twine.
When he made his way back to camp, the others stared at him with questioning glances, momo crawling up to sniff at the flowers. “Whats with the flowers? You into gardening or something?” Sokka asked, eyeing the bright fire-lillies in his grasp. “I got these for Y/n” Zuko blushed as he realized how this looked, averting his eyes from Sokka’s teasing gaze. “Aww thats sweet, Zuko. Who knew you were such a softie.” Kitara cooed, fluttering her lashes in a mock swoon. Zuko gritted his teeth, cheeks burning hotter than the sun. “Yeah, maybe you’ll man up and confess. We all know you like them” Toph chided, smirking. “I don’t!” Zuko protested. “You’re lyinggg” Toph hummed, and Zuko cursed her abilities to see with her feet.
“Whats going on?” Zuko froze when he heard your voice, quickly turning towards you, hiding the bouquet behind his back. “Oh nothing, just teasing Zuko about his undying lo-“ Sokka was abruptly cut off by Zuko slapping his hand over his mouth, glaring at him. “What Sokka was trying to say is, we were teasing Zuko’s undying and super obvious crush on you.” Toph stated nonchalantly. The others snickered at Zuko’s panicked expression, his cheeks couldn’t have gotten hotter, wide eyes turned to you. “I dont know what they’re talking about! I don’t have a crush on you! They’re just trying to be funny i swear-“ “uh, Zuko-“ “I just want you to trust me, so i got you these flowers-“ he pulled the bouquet from behind him, presenting it to you. But what he didn’t realize was, he had accidentally set the lilies on fire. He gasped and dropped the bouquet, stomping on the charred flowers to put the fire out. You just gave him a blank look, the others snickering behind you. Zuko had never felt so embarrassed in his life.
“Wow Zuko, that sure was a good way to confess!” Kitara teased, watching as you just threw your hands up, being completely done with… whatever that was, and walking away to your tent. “Yeah Zuko. Maybe try not almost burning the camp down. I think Y/n will like it better if you just told them how you feel!” Aang chirped, just irritating Zuko more with his upbeat attitude. “Whatever, you guys are impossible” he snapped, storming off in a random direction. “And I told you i don’t like them!” Once he was out of earshot, Toph snickered, laying on her back against Appa’s side. “He’s lying again.”
For the rest of the day, Zuko avoided you at all costs. Leaving you to teach Aang by yourself, even sitting a considerable distance away from you during lunch. It was confusing you, but you didn’t say anything. You guessed he was still embarrassed from the spectacle he had made of himself that morning. You couldn’t help but smile to yourself. Zuko was sweet, and if what the others are saying is true, you couldn’t deny that you could start feeling something for him too. You’d observed him ever since he joined the group, and his surprisingly gentle heart had impressed you. You’d watched him teach Aang during your training sessions. Appreciating the way his body moved flawlessly, his dark hair bringing out the gold in his eyes. You had to admit, you weren’t complaining when he would show up to your lessons shirtless. There was no denying he was cute.
So, you decided to approach him, surprising even yourself. You waited for everyone to settle into their tents, then you made your way to his. You stood outside for a second, thinking about how you were going to start this, what you would say. But your thoughts blanked when Zuko crawled out of his tent, now face to face with you. “O-oh hi- Zuko- i, um” you stuttered, lost for words. His eyes widened at the sight of you, sputtering like a nervous wreck. “I just wanted to u-um say, t-that i think the flowers were beautiful and u-um that was very sweet of you” “o-oh” you stood in awkward silence, the ground suddenly very interesting. “Anyways i think i’m gonna go-“ “wait, i-i um, i got you this too.” He quickly handed you the necklace, eyes averting yours and a deep blush on his cheeks. You looked the piece of jewelry over, smiling at him. “It’s beautiful Zuko. Um, thank you?” “You’re uh, you’re welcome..” you don’t know what took over you, but you leaned forward pressing a soft kiss to his cheek. You stared at each other in shock, now it was your turn to blush, face as red as a tomato. “Uh well, its getting late- i’m gonna go back to my tent. G-goodnight” the words came out quicker than you could think, racing off back to your tent. Leaving Zuko standing there, hand on his cheek, feeling how warm the skin was under his palm. His brain short circuited and his heart was beating 400 miles per minute, he swore he was gonna pass out.

'Fake' Feelings
Zuko x Reader
Summary- In a pinch, you have to pretend to be in a relationship with Zuko. Little do you know it was never pretend for Zuko.
A/N- HAPPY BIRTHDAY @thethreeeyed-raven!!!!! This isn't my typical fandom as y'all know. I wrote this as a birthday gift to my best best best online friend. SHE'S AWESOME. Go check her fics out <3<3! CONTAINS A SINGLE BAD WORD >:)
Word Count- 2,468
"Mai, I already told you. I can't be with you!" Zuko was getting frustrated. While he did love Mai at one point, that was a long time ago. Zuko was now the Fire Lord, their relationship seemed like ages ago.
"And why not Zuko? We've been through this a hundred times. You always come running back, you're so pathetic. May as well cut the middle part and we can act like nothing happened." She stepped closer, pressing herself on his arm. "Like we always do..."
Zuko had finally realized how Mai controlled him. When he was weaker he was naive, now he knew what he wanted. Someone who never put him down, someone who never called him 'Pathetic.'
You.
He immediately thought of you. How you were so strong, but never put others down to feel powerful. How you always spoke your mind, but only out of the kindness you hid deep down.
Your walls were built up so high, but he knew who you were. He knew how beautiful you were.
"I can't be with you because I'm dating someone else." The words left his mouth faster than he could think.
This stopped Mai in her tracks. "Excuse me?"
"Yeah, you're not the only one I am allowed to go out with. We've been broken up for awhile now." Zuko was no longer on the defense, but the attack.
"You do know that I am the only one who could love you. Who could love a traitor, a banished prince. Who else, huh?" Her arms were crossed, a smirk on her face. She knew she outwitted him.
Releasing his bit lip, Zuko exclaims your name.
Her face dropped. She knew exactly who you were. She was furious.
"We'll see about that..." With that, she left the room.
You were on your way to visit Zuko, one of your closest friends, for a 'friend reunion' Sokka had planned. You were of course excited to see him after so long. Though, the ride on Appa was miserable. About a hundred "are we there yet"s and "I'm hungry"s from Sokka.
The five of you- Sokka, Toph, Katara, and Aang made it safely to The Fire Nation shortly.
Upon landing, a man in red robes greeted everyone.
"The Fire Lord sends his deepest regards, as he could not see to you himself. You are instructed to follow me to your rooms." He had a stoic expression, but you guessed he greeted people all the time.
Oh well, Zuko must be very busy as a Fire Lord. You were sad, but couldn't blame him.
What you didn't know was that Zuko was pacing his room, definitely not busy. In reality, he cleared his schedule as much as possible for the week you were all visiting.
How was he going to tell you? He was deeply embarrassed, not to mention Mai might try and pull something with you. He knew not to underestimate her.
The thought of her trying to hurt you was enough to rack up the nerve to confess. He just needed a moment alone with you.
A grand dinner was prepared for the Avatars arrival, the rest of you reaped the rewards of being his friends.
"This is SOO good!" Sokka exclaimed, "Zuko sure has a way with food....." He slammed a fist on the table, before quickly lifting more food to his mouth,
"Sokka, you know he has chefs who make the food, right? Please tell me you know that..." You deadpanned, looking at him.
"Uh... Yeah! Yeah, definitely...." He looked down, that was until a new voice appeared.
"Sokka, did you really think I cooked all this?" Zuko walked to the seat at the head of the table. You noticed you were sat to his right.
It was a Fire Nation tradition that the Lady of the house would sit to the right of the Lord... You brushed the thought off quickly, writing it all off as a coincidence.
"W-well I don't know! You've been working ALL DAY!" Sokka squawked.
The dinner went on smoothly, well as smoothly a dinner can go with this group. You could feel the servants and servers rolling their eyes at all the unprofessional comments, jokes, and laughter.
You didn't care, you were just happy Zuko was able to be himself.
Hours later, when everyone was worn out and had their stomachs filled, they started to head to bed.
You were one of the last to leave, having been helping tidy up as much as you could.
You thanked and farewelled the servers, trying your best to remember where your room was.
The Palace was much bigger than you remembered. The halls upon halls blurred together. You were soon lost.
Every direction you turned looked the same, you started to breathe heavy.
You could already see it, 'cause of death, starvation in the Fire Nation Palace.' Or maybe dehydration would take you quicker?
A man passed by, you were saved! Though, the closer you got the bigger his scowl grew.
"Excuse me, I think I'm lost. Can you help me?" You were nervous asking, it was so 'common' for someone to get lost in a palace. You were sure your cheeks were red.
His face was dark, his eyes covered by his demeanor. For some reason he seemed annoyed at you.
"Sir?"
A hand rested on your shoulder from behind. It started you, putting you into a 'fight mode.'
Turning around swiftly calmed your nerves as quickly as they came. It was Zuko.
"Can I help you?" Zuko was talking to the strange man, who was no longer so 'big and bad.'
"No Fire Lord Zuko, my apologies." He barred his head in a bow and left.
You had a small smile on your lips, "Thanks, he was starting to scare me." While you were positive you could have taken the man, you were tired and didn't really feel like fighting.
"Of course, I can show you to your room." He held his arm out, you took it.
The gesture was friendly, you told yourself. Nothing more.
You must have been lost for awhile, as it took a few minutes to get to your room. The small talk exchanged was nice, but something told you Zuko was hiding something.
At your door, he stopped. "Zuko, do you want to come in? You seem restless."
"Actually, I do have something to tell you..." The tone of his voice scared you.
"Oh, then please sit." He joined you on the edge of your end. The door shut behind you two.
You pushed a strand of hair back, nervously sitting. "What's wrong?"
"I'm not really sure how to tell you this... I really am ashamed to have to ask you for a really big favor..." You had seen him on edge a lot, he was quite the stressor. Nothing like this, though.
"Zuko, anything. What do you need me to do?" You questioned.
He looked down at his hands, "You can tell me. I'm in no position to judge you, you know that."
"I uh," He rubbed the back of his neck, "I told Mai that we were dating so she would stop trying to get with me." He spit out so fast you almost missed what he said.
"Oh."
Well that's not what you thought he would say...
"That's not the worst part." He lowered his face to his hands, "The ball in four days, well I told her you were going with me... She's got Ty Lee lining up suitors for her. Trying to make me mad. Also she uh, she's probably told everyone now..."
"Oh." You were at a loss for words.
"I... I don't know... I'm sorry. This is stupid, at the ball I'll tell everyone what happened. I am so, so sorry. I didn't mean for this to happen! It just slipped out an-"
"Zuko."
"Yes?"
"What if you don't have to tell everyone?"
You hadn't looked at him since he started talking. Honestly, a night with Zuko at a ball? It sounded like a dream. Zuko was handsome, kind, generous, and you'd had a crush on him for months. You knew he wouldn't ever really date you... So you might as well seize the opportunity, right? What could go wrong!
The two of you decided it would be wise to not tell anyone else it was fake, as Sokka, Toph, and Aang had big mouths. They'd slip up sooner or later. As for Katara, she wouldn't have kept that big of a secret from Aang.
So, for the next few days you and Zuko spent every second together. At first, it was coming up with plans for the ball. It turned into getting more physically comfortable with each other. That eventually escalated to spilling each other's deepest secrets, ya know... just in case...
Even in four days, you found yourself going from a crush to madly in love. You found out his quirks, what made him tick, his hidden likes and dislikes. Not a second was spent apart.
The afternoon before the ball you were stressed. It had been easy up until the ball. You just had to be yourself around Zuko, now you had to pretend in front of hundreds...
Katara helped you pick out a beautiful red and black dress. To match Zuko's of course.
A big scene was planned out between the two of you, Zuko would introduce you to everyone in an announcement and you'd walk don't the grand starts arm in arm with him.
It was fun to imagine and talk about, but now the 'what ifs' were running wild.
You somehow made your way to Zuko's room, knocking hesitantly. He begrudgingly opened, but became excited when he saw you.
"Zuko, I'm terrified." He quickly guided you into his room.
"What happened?"
"What if I fall? What if no one likes me? It's a lot of steps it-" He cut you off.
"Hey, it's okay... We can throw everything out the window. Just saw the words."
You swallowed thick. "No, no just... Just promise you'll be there? For me?"
Your name was a whisper on his lips, "Ill always be here for you... Just imagines its only us up there... Just normal day."
You nodded, more relaxed knowing he'd be by your side through I tall. It also gave you a wicked feeling of comfort to know he was still willing to do whatever you preferred. He would have ended the lie immediately if you asked, but you wanted to be there for him as well. To make sure Mai would leave him alone.
The Palace was bustling with people, waiters, food, activities, and entertainment. It all came to an abrupt stop when Lord Zuko appeared.
It was comical, trumpets blared and all head turned.
"Fire Lord Zuko, accompanied by-" Your name seemed unreal on his lips. To be announced with a Fire Lord? You felt you didn't deserve it.
You slowly walked into view of everyone, whispers erupting. To be 'accompanied by' was essentially dating for Lords and Ladys.
All eyes were on you as you took Zuko's arm, walking down the steps. You felt light, your grip tightening on Zukos.
"Almost there, I'm right here." His words were all the comfort you needed.
Music resumed and the party goers continued their fun.
That was expect for one person. Mai. She marched up to you, her questioning eyes on guard. Watching her march over sparked a fury in you, the fire started and didn't stop until you spoke.
"Hello Mai. How can I help you? Is your father well, since he lost his job as Governor and all..." You passively aggressively asked, a mock frown on your face.
"What would you know about Governor dad's and all? You grew up poor." Damn, she got you there.
"I guess the difference in poor and rich is personality. Cause you don't have one..." You shrugged your shoulders at her, biting back a laugh.
"At least Zuko loved me for who I am, not who I was pretending to be." She remarked, not really knowing why Zuko loved her or you.
"Damn Mai, you must know a lot about pretending. Seeing as you're a two faced bitch. Should I go and tell Ty Lee you called her an 'easy bed'." A gasp left her lips in shock, how did you know she said that? Well, you wouldn't tell her, but a gossiping Fire Sage spilled the beans.
Zuko, who had been temporarily called away to exchange pleasantries with a Navy Captain, had returned.
"Mai, I see you've met my girlfriend." He said, snaking a hand around your waist. Chills were sent up your spine.
She gave a scoff, "It'll never last. You're only in it because he's the Fire Lord." She pointed to you, then him, "And you, you just seemed to pick up the next girl you saw laying around. Talk about a downgrade. When you get tired of her, i'll be waiting." She walked away.
"What is her problem!" You exclaimed, face hot with anger.
"Jealousy, I think." He said.
You turned to face him completely. "What for, she doesn't even seem to like you anymore?"
"Maybe cause you're prettier than her?" He said, not realizing his own words.
Your cheeks were now flushed for a different reason. You swiped your lips with your tongue before speaking, "Thank you..."
Hours of dancing, partying, and eating went by. Everyone bought the act easily, you and Zuko were naturals at dating. The fun died down, and many were starting to go back home.
Zuko walked you back to your room, hand in hand.
"Thank you. I really cannot thank you enough, just ask. Whatever you want is yours." Zuko said, still grasping your hands at your bedroom door.
"I don't need anything. This was really fun actually, I know you were just pretending... but i've had the best time the past five days."
"Pretend?" His face screwed up, like he was in denial.
You blinked a few times, own lip curling. "Well, I mean... You made it pretty clear this was all just an act. I-I am not hurt." You were, but wouldn't let him know.
"Words cannot express how genuine these days have been... Oh gosh, I haven't felt this free since I was a child." He pressed on, serious.
"Y-you mean, none of this has been fake to you?"
"Well, I know you signed up for 'fake'." He looked over you, face uncertain.
With a step forward you spoke, "This hasn't been fake for me either..."
"Really?" He pressed his chest to your slightly, hand wavering around your waist. "Because I don't think I could live if you're lying right now."
"Will this answer your questions?" You leaned up, closing the gap and kissing him.
A/N-Thank you for reading, I haven't fully watched ATLA In a little bit sorry if Zuko is OOC!! When it's not midnight and I'm not super tired, I will edit any mistakes!

Hihi I was hoping I could request enemies to lovers Zuko x fem!reader?
The reader is a traitor to the fire nation and can bend fire (also a street peformer before she joined the gaang? 👀) 💕💕
Omg getting a request just made my day I love these!!!
I hope you like it 🫶🫶🫶
YOURE STILL A TRAITOR
Id like to say that my life is good, that I’m happy where I am but I’m not. I’m upset and frustrated; but most of all I’m living on the street, preforming stupid acrobatic tricks just to feed myself. I’ve left everything behind. My family and wealth but most importantly someone I never wanted to live without.
I’m upside down when I see them; soft flames coming from the soles of my bare feet. Resting on my forearms and twisting and contorting my body.
“You.” A teenaged girl approaches me and I turn right side up, “you’re a fire bender aren’t you!” She says, “what’s your name?”
“Uh” I stare at her and smile nervously, “y/n Huǒ” I repeat slowly, and quietly. People of the fire nation know the traitor I’ve become outside the walls of the fire nation. Meeting the avatar, going against my friends for his life. All because I believed in something greater than all of this.
“I know you” a boy says, bandana around his forehead, “your grandpa, Yújìn. I know- or knew him” He says
“Oh.” Realization hits my face, “you’re the avatar!” A short girl slaps me.
“Wow way to tell everyone!” She retorts, god are little kids sassy.
“You could teach Aang firebending” Katara says, it’s hard not to know someone’s name when there’s wanted posters all over town.
“I’m good at fire bending but I’m no master” I say, “I thought Prince Zuko abandoned the throne to teach you” I ask
“Well he’s uh.. learning a new way to firebend” Toph laughs a little and I smile awkwardly.
“I don’t bend very traditionally” I reply, “but if it will get me off the streets I guess why not” I stand up straighter and brush my hair out of my face.
“You brought that back?!” Zuko shouts, we’ve had a long history. One that includes a betrothal, and a knife to the gut. He looks at me with disgust which I’m not surprised at.
“I’m a girl. Not a thing!” I cry out, “the only reason I’m here is because Aang needs a firebending teacher because you suck!” I scoff out at him, there’s fire burning in his hands but I never raise mine.
He groans at me, “you’ve always been like this! Even when”
“Zuko I don’t want to talk about that” I warn, there’s a plea in my voice but he accepts that, “it was a long time ago”
“Yeah like it was that long ago” he sasses and I roll my eyes.
“Zuko!”
It doesn’t take long for things to settle down; I’m essentially useless now that Zuko has gotten his bending back. Even if he did it how I told him to do it all along but whatever.
The bickering still happens, and I want to throw a knife at him but part of me still loves him. I didn’t hate being betrothed to him as much as I thought I did.
“Did you ever miss us?” I ask him, “after you were banished. I refused to Azula to give away your location and then the Avatars when you wrote me” I confess, “so I left”
“I think. At first I did, but I don’t— I don’t think we would’ve worked together. We fight all the time. I hated you at first. And you hated me” He admits, looking down slightly. He sighs heavily
“Yeah. I guess. But I didn’t really hate- hate you” I admit, “I missed you. I liked knowing you”
He nods, “I did like knowing you too, you’ve changed so much. I mean your fire it’s pink” he laughs
“Maybe it’s from my bubbly personality” I tease, he laughs
“You. Have a bubbly personality!” He laughs and it’s so good to hear, “you were so shy, like if I sneezed too hard I would scare you”
I smile softly, “I’ve changed so much sense I was twelve” my hair falls around my face and he tucks the loose strand around my ear
“What now that you’re fourteen?” He teases softly, his hand lingers behind my ear. But he removes himself quickly.
“Zuko. Im fifteen” I remind him, it’s embarrassing when he says he knows how my heart flutters and I feel weak in the knees.
“I remember, once you turned eighteen we would’ve” he looks away with a blush on his cheeks
“Yeah. Gotten married” I laugh, and I keep laughing because the thought of getting married feels so small and childish to the war we’re supposed to be preparing for.
He laughs; rolling laughs that make me keep laughing. My laughs turn short and wheezy before his face straightens, “are you ok? Can you breathe?” His face turns to me and he smiles seeing my smile. It’s a smile that makes my cheeks hurt and heart race.
“As the Prince of the fire nation. I’m supposed to hate you. Because you’ve betrayed our nation. But as Zuko. As your Zuko. In this moment I don’t feel anything but hate. I feel love for you. A fire that I never want to put out” he tells me, scooting closer to me. I let him cradle my face, “I never hated you”
“I never hated you either” a weak laugh escapes me but he kisses me before it truly develops. It’s a kiss that devours me whole, wrapping itself into my heart and soul.
“If we make it through this. Let’s make good on that betrothal”

I believe Aang was right to end the war by sparing Ozai. But the only (imho) valid reason some people say he should have done it is because they wanted Aang to realize that pacifism is flawed.
I'm gonna disagree with you here, because a lot of the flaws fans talk about pacism and how ATLA in particular handles it as a concept are 99%:
1 - People being ignorant/racist and not knowing the difference between pacifist monks and "make love, not war" hippies.
2 - People being ignorant/racist and refusing to understand that there are different kinds of pacifism, even within the same cultures/people groups.
Aang is very clearly not the type of pacifist to go "You can NEVER react with ANY kind of violence towards someone else, even if it's to defend yourself/someone else" (which does exist, both IRL and in the show, just look at the owl spirit in "The Library").
We see him fight, and even be quite aggressive in said fights, in a lot of episodes. We also see he has no issues with invading the Fire Nation. More importantly, for the longest time the Avatar State was a result of him being pissed off enough at some kind of injustice that it makes him lose control, meaning he is very clearly affected by the horrors of war to the point of RAGE.
What makes him a pacifist is the way in which he doesn't WANT to lose control, doens't WANT go from aggressive to full on cruel, and, yes, wants to defeat his enemies, but not kill them.
And as I keep repeating, the show DOES make him question that last boundary he set for himself. He gets told by a past Avatar, who was also an air-nomad before anything, that, when there is such a large threat to everyone's life, including his own, he has to put aside his own spiritual needs and take a life - provided there isn't another option. But there was, so Aang took that, even after he decided that, yes, if there was no other way, he WOULD kill Ozai.
What people don't like is that Avatar, although questioning some types of pacifism, is far more interested in questioning the way people are WAY too eager to use violence to solve their issues, and, more importantly, expect someone else to get their hands bloody.
Fire Lord Sozin starts the war because he, according to himself at least, wants what's best for everyone and would like to share the Fire Nation's glory and great life with the other nations. He tries to do by invading foreign territories, killing his best friend, and commiting genocide. The fucker even has the dragons, an obvious Fire Nation symbol, to be hunted to extintion.
When Jet is angry at the Gaang for ruining his plan to free a village from the Fire Nation's control by blowing up a dam, Sokka asks "Who would be free? Everyone would be dead."
Zuko is banished because he spoke out against a Fire Nation higher-up's plan to use soldiers as fresh meat to bait the enemy into a more vulnerable position, thus assuring the nation's victory in that battle. He openly says "These men love and defend our nation, how can you betray them?"
When Zhao wants to kill the moon spirit, Iroh tries to stop him by pointing out that the Fire Nation needs the moon too (seriously, if it wasn't for Yue's sacrifice and Zhao's death, the Fire Nation would have had to create a word for "Big-ass wave that wrecks everything and kills people" like Japan did).
When Aang is deliberately trying to trigger the Avatar State because he doesn't want anyone else to die in the war, Katara, who had her life ruined by said war, is against it because while she opposes the Fire Nation, she cares about Aang and, in her own words, seeing him in so much pain and rage hurts her too. When Aang can't force himself to go nuclear, an Earth Kingdom ruler attacks Katara and makes both her and Aang, two very traumatized child soldiers, think he is going to kill her.
More importantly, when Ozai wants to burn down Earth Kingdom cities, he says "A new world will rise from the ashes, and I'll be supreme ruler of everything", to which Zuko concludes that, if they don't save the world before his dad takes over, there won't be a world to save.
And what does he say to Aang when he is about to kill him? "You're weak, just like your people. They didn't deserve to live in world, in my world."
Avatar does questions pacifism, and is critical of it on ocasion (again, watch "The Library"). But it's biggest theme is being critical of VIOLENCE, of resorting to it immediately without considering any other option and acting like it doesn't have long-lasting negative consequences, both to the person suffering it to the person inflicting it (see Azula's breakdown, Zuko's angry outburts only making him more miserable, Jeong Jeong growing to resent being a firebender, Zhao accidentally burning his own ships, etc)
The show is constantly highlighting that, yes, sacrifices need to be made for the greater good - but that CAN'T be normalized because it inevitably leads to a never-ending cicle of cruelty, as well as suffering to the one who has to do the dirty job (because lets not forget there's a big difference in how a soldier that is constantly in battle sees the war and how a king that just gives the orders but never goes into the actual combat sees the war).
The show embraces pacifism, despite knowing some versions of it are flawed, because the narratives themes are:
1 - EVERYONE is capable of great good and great evil
2 - No group has the right to impose it's own lifestyle onto others
3 - If everyone is either dead, mentally (and physically) scarred for life, or preparing to kill someone as revenge, then being killed by someone who wants to avenge that person, who will themselves be killed for revenge later, then the "greater good" you're sacrificing everything for doesn't actually exist because NO ONE will have a good life in a world that is stuck in the cicle of violence.

I genuinely want to know what show the people who say that Aang never respected Katara are watching. "Aang never let Katara feel anything other than what he wanted her to feel" "He idealized her" "He didn't care about her feelings" "He didn't support her the way she supported him". WHERE ARE YOU GETTING THIS FROM??? That's a rhetorical question because I already know what episodes/moments they're using to make those assertions (The Southern Raiders and the kiss in Ember Island Players), and even then, THEY'RE WRONG.
Let's start with TSR. This episode gets so misinterpreted it's not even funny. First off, Aang was never even upset with Katara in this episode, he's just warning her against killing someone??? He never gets mad at her or berates her. He just talks to her with a level head??? He openly acknowledges that he knows and understands how much rage and pain Katara is in, and he never tells her that she shouldn't feel it, he just advises her not to act rashly because of it??? Where is the lack of respect? Where is he ignoring her feelings or getting upset with her for not acting the way he wants her to? He lets her take Appa and even tells her that he understands that this is a journey she needs to take and supports her doing so, he just doesn't want her to kill someone. Honestly Aang shows more respect for Katara by knowing who she is as a person and not enabling her in her revenge than Zuko who is only going on this trip with her so that she'll forgive him, not because he actually cares that she's upset over the death of her mother (and this is not Zuko slander before people take it as such, I love Zuko, but it's not even subtext that his motivations in this episode are selfish and not about Katara).
As for the kiss in EIP, yes, it was not okay. Yes, it was a mistake. Yes, he shouldn't have done it after Katara laid a clear boundary, but he recognizes that immediately. After Katara- rightfully- gets upset with him, he gets upset with himself. We also see that he never repeats that mistake again and is fully okay with letting Katara lead after that. Which is why it's Katara who initiates the final kiss on the balcony. And if you still don't think he learned anything from it, he starts to ask for her consent in the comics before kissing her, showing that he absolutely DID grow from that mistake. So, we're really going to let one moment where a 12-year-old boy made a mistake dictate the entire show and negate everything that came before it??? That's coocoo banana's behavior.
I also think that those assertions are completely baseless because when does Aang idealize Katara? When does he hate her rage? When does he not support her? Is it when he laughed with her after she stole from pirates? Or in that same episode where he constantly reaffirms her skills as a waterbender- first by saying that he's able to pick it up so easily because she's a great teacher and then later when he refers to her as a waterbender which makes her so fucking happy? Is it when he gets so upset that Pakku refuses to teach Katara how to waterbend that he tries to walk away from his own waterbending training? Is it when he goes behind Pakku's back to teach her anyway? Or when he stands by actively cheering her on when she's raging against the patriarchy and fights Pakku? Is it when he calls her Sifu Katara because she expressed that he referred to Toph that way but not her? Is it when he helped her commit ecoterrorism and told her she was a hero for helping the people in that Fire Nation village? Is it when he holds her after she breaks down because she learned how to bloodbend? Is it when he comforts her after Jet's death? Is it... you get the point, don't you?
Aang recognizing Katara as someone who is strong and capable is not him idealizing her. Him not enabling her committing murder is not him hating when she feels rage. Aang actively supports Katara's rage on multiple occasions, he just doesn't enable her when he knows she's acting out of character. If you don't ship Kataang, that's fine, but please don't make up baseless accusations to try and tear them down just because you're mad that a ship that had no basis in canon (potential is not evidence) wasn't canon.

BEING ROOMMATES WITH COLLEGE MODERN AU! AANG:
𓇢𓆸°❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:・prompt: in a world where the Alta world didn’t have a war and it was just a peaceful modern life.
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚being roommates with the avatar as you are just a non bender is either peaceful or chaos.
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚oh you’re sleeping in? If classes were cancelled, he’s sleeping in with you as a appa and momo plushie is beside you. If classes weren’t cancelled, he’s sending a light blast of air to your bed to lift you up. You were startled and immediately started chasing Aang around pissed off while he laughs his ass off.
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚movie nights are an absolute must. Cause Aang is a person who likes to hang out with people he feels comfortable with. So you better expect him to ask you to choose, he loves to know more about you.
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚this man deadass almost burnt the dorm room down and you were panicking until he put it out with his airbending. Aang looks back at you still shaken up. He sighs going over to you, making sure you were okay. He hated to see you scared and he apologized by ordering your favorite food instead.
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚Aang could possibly teach you history if you asked him. I mean, he was sealed in ice 100 years ago at most. You would hesitate as this bald headed roommate of yours just wait with a patient smile.
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚he does take you to visit the air temple he came from. At the southern air temple, he shows you how he did the air scooter. You laugh and smile until he sped past you making you fall. You got up angrily and chased after him as he laughs.
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚this little Mr clean ripoff asshole ate your leftovers once. And for once Aang saw death himself seeing you actually catch up to him around the apartment. AND HE WAS IN AVATAR STATE TRYING TO DODGE YOU THROWING SHOES AT HIM. 😭
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚one peaceful day/night was when it was just raining that whole time. You had told Aang that rainy days/nights make you tired fast. So when you fell asleep on the couch while watching tv and listening to the rain, he laid beside you. Having his tall body on you as you snore peacefully. Even momo joined, leaping on Aang’s head. It was just a calm moment the whole night/day.
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚if you’re stressed and overstimulated by your classes and work. Aang is literally gonna hug you, and might as well try to do your work for you. He’s such a good friend and roommate. He looks behind him to see you sleeping peacefully with momo. He smiles, feeling happy that you are getting the rest you need.
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚now if Aang seemed tired or overstimulated. He’s either being alone, or going into your arms for a hug since a hug is what everyone needs sometimes. He is deadass having his head in your neck and passing out. I feel like the reason why he is just tired is trying to keep the peace in the 4 nations to not make a war happen just in case.
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚arguing over who’s answer is right is everyday of your life with him as your roommate. He’s somehow got 11 as an answer on a math question while you got 80 as an answer. You two were about to throw hands until Zuko came by and told you two dumbasses that the real answer was 20…
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚if you’re sick at dorm, he’s blowing up your phone while he is at class taking notes. He doesn’t care if he gets scolded or made fun by the gaang for worrying that much about you. He just wants you to get better so he can hug you without getting sick himself. Aang might as well make momo force you to medicine.
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚you once accidentally snored on him, Aang snickered of course. But he wrapped his arm around you gently to make sure you won’t wake up or feel uncomfortable. He’s smooth like that.
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚after being roommates for like 2 semesters, you guys became close friends. You would wear matching hoodies, shirts, etc. cause Aang is an affectionate person, he wants to make sure you have a friend to lend a shoulder on. He’s that guy who you could talk and rant to for hours and he will listen to you closely.
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚you still smack his head as a joke to hear that impact. And yes Aang will blast your ass away from him and put you in ice prison or rock prison from his bending. He’s not playing games. See if you were heavy handed, it’s justified to have you in prison of rock or ice. Now if you were to have your hand wasn’t heavy but light, even if you try to hit hard. Aang is making fun of how “weak” you are.
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚imagine how chaotic it would be at night if you two did a horror movie night. Screaming together and just start tweaking out at each jumpscare and every time the suspense was too much. Yeah both of you didn’t sleep until you guys were holding each other closely. With Aang having his arms wrapped around your waist and you having your arms around his neck. You jumped scared at a jumpscare, making you shiver into Aang’s neck. Aang had enough and turned the movie off, picking you up bridal style and taking you to bed.
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚that time when Aang had his hair grown out, you tried to do small baby pig tails with his short hair. Aang relaxes at your touch as he almost falls asleep until you were done. “Ta-da! I’m done, go look bro.” You say patting his cheek. He lifted his head from your lap and walked to the bathroom mirror. He must say, he did look absolutely funny. But he looked “fabulous” is what you said. That was until he shaved his hair again to match his culture.
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚i feel like being roommates personally with Aang would actually be calm sometimes. Considering you two have such chemistry together during these college times. He definitely has an album of you on his phone. He’s the type of friend to remember everything about you specially. And not in a weird way but like a “okay noted, get them this favorite snack when they are in a bad mood” way. But mostly he takes selfies with you by his side. Hide all you want. You are not missing this selfie.
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚if there’s a fair around, he’s getting you all the stuff animals. You would have to drag him away from his yellow and red hoodie from the shotgun game. You were embarrassed by the stares people got at how the avatar was getting dragged by a simple adult man/woman like you. But honestly it’s fun with Aang at a fair cause he makes sure you have fun as well. Sharing cotton candy was the first thing in his mind as he pays the person and holds the cotton candy. You felt flustered sharing the cotton candy cone from his hand as he just laughs at how cute you seemed.
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚Aang and you definitely had been asked if you guys are together. You would immediately try to tell the person no as Aang is trying to either process the accusation, or make it worse by telling them that you both are. Playfully of course.
🎐˚。⋆୨୧˚taking calm summer walks, and that summer air just hitting your face and his. It’s just relaxing. You two talk to each other, probably wanting to go to republic city for shopping for more groceries or such. You notice the sun setting as you smile, the golden ray of sun hitting your face. Aang looks at you lovingly while you talk about how beautiful the sun is. Aang agrees, still looking at you whilst you two sit down on the soft green grass.

hakoda being a genuinely loving, supportive father to katara and never invalidating her feelings but still comforting her is something that can be so important <3333
especially, as many as have pointed out, as it contrasts with zuko’s hollow reunion with ozai, getting conditional and tenuous praise while still nervous, knowing he’s on thin, dangerous ice, and on his knees in a pose that more or less looks like he is awaiting judgment.
one of the ways this really gets highlighted is that katara spends the episode needling hakoda. just a little, just here and there—he just heard me call you dad didn’t he? and it’s sokka’s invasion plan both spring to mind—and i don’t think even she understands why she’s doing it. she seems sincere and surprised when aang suggests katara’s mad at her dad. but it’s definitely there, and it maybe was there for a while, because there was a weeks-long time skip we didn’t see.
but there is never, not for one moment, a point at which katara thinks needling hakoda in this way might put her in danger, or a point at which the audience is supposed to be worried for her on that level. it doesn’t even cross her mind (because hakoda is a good and non-abusive dad), and the only reason it crosses mine now is because of how it contrasts with the zuko and ozai scene.
there is tension between them, sure—we see hakoda reacting with some sad/confused expressions but still appeasing her—but even as hurt and confused and angry as she does feel, katara feels 100% safe to express it all to hakoda without any fear of retribution or danger.
contrastly, zuko is… you know, i said nervous before, but terrified would be a more apt word. everything from his expression, to the ominous music, to the staging as ozai looms over him is supposed to show us that. he’s terrified. and the audience absolutely is supposed to be worried that zuko is in danger here because we’ve seen why he’s terrified and know he has every reason to be and that the situation is inherently tenuous at best: zuko would never and could never poke at his father, the way katara does hers in this episode, because it wouldn’t be safe to do so.
zuko spends most of his interaction with ozai completely silent, in fact, and when he does speak up—what did you hear?—he’s walking on eggshells to navigate the lie azula’s told, and the danger he’s finding himself in anyway.
also, just to be clear, this is not katara hate, i literally love her. i love that katara gets to act this way because it’s such an honest portrayal of a teenage girl with complicated emotions, and i find her reconciliation scene with hakoda to be one of the most cathartic scenes in the entire show. and like, i’m glad that she never has reason to even consider that hakoda might harm her in some way, because that’s not a situation that any kid should ever be in. the point is the parallel with zuko, who very much does have reason to worry about what his father will do, is as fascinating as it is tragic.

The Good & the Bad: On Aang (Not) Killing the Fire Lord
I recived this asks forever ago, trurly sorry anon, but I'll keep my apologises for the end. I'd love to answer that!
If you're asking me, this is way better than """killing him""". Case closed.
Getting this cleared up: The show didn't say that Aang is morally superior for this. It was solely about staying true to himself. Not a moral high ground.
So when I hear people say it's problematic because it implies that sparing imperialistic dictators has some intrinsic goodness to it, (Ahem-Lily Orchard), I just can't agree. It was never about universal ethics, it was about Aang's culture and values.
Why Is This a Good Thing?
Aang loves his culture, and takes a lot of pride in it and its values. (See: in The Southern Raiders his first go-to to convince Katara to spare Yon Rah is his culture, rather than what such act would do Katara herself). He would have been ashamed if he had broken them. But right now they clash with his Avatar duties, with god-knows how many lives at stake. He needs to let go of his pride & shame, and become humble.
Just like Zuko humbling himself to the GAang before they accept him, or Sokka humbling himself to the Kyoshi warriors and Master Piandao, Aang could only speak to the the lion turtle after he'd given up, after he was humbled.
Even beyond Aang, it enhances the show's themes at large. A theme in A:TLA is paving your own path, and that you can do what you want despite the pressure. Your true destiny will come, you might be surprised by it, but it's yours and you're free to carve it.
You just have to keep going, to continue to do the right thing, and your destiny will find you. Things have a way of working out in the end, eventually.
Sparing Ozai serves the theme, thus the show overall. Everyone told him it's his destiny to kill the Fire Lord and end the war. But he didn't agree, paving his own path, his own destiny, and all was well. The pieces fell in their place.
It is s amplified by the fact that if you read between the lines, he actually did follow all the previous Avatars' wisdom besides Yangchen's.
Aang knew what he wanted from the start. He isn't going to kill the Fire Lord. People (rightfully) tried to pressure him, but in the end, he stuck to his decision.
Justice was served. Aang took his bending away and put him to rot in prison for the rest of his life. There's more than one way to execute justice.
"... and the destiny of the world". That's exactly what Aang did. He followed his own path (staying true to himself) while saving the world (ending Ozai regime).
So that leaves us with Yangchen's advice. The one he didn't follow:
This opens another layer to this. Why doesn't Aang take the advice of a fellow Air Nomad? The one he should relate to the most? Because despite both being Avatars and Airbenders, Aang is the last. They're not the same. Yangchen is speaking from a place of privilege. She can carry the weight of the Avatar and not worry about the Air Nomads. Notice the wording: "spiritual needs". But it's deeper than that. In her time, they were there, they'll preserve their culture and values. Aang doesn't have that.
He's Avatar: The Last Airbender. He has both weights to carry. The decision to spare the Fire Lord, while protecting the rest of the world, is embedded in the show's title.
There's also something so incredibly powerful in Ozai being defeated specifically with Air Nomad values. A 100 years ago, during Sozin's Comet, the Fire Nation started the war by genociding them. When it comes back, the Avatar, the last Air Nomad, ends the war and stops the next genocide while preserving their values. The Fire Nation isn't going to push him to taint (one of) the last living aspacts of the Air Nomads, and Aang is shouting it – in the very same day the disaster occurred.
(Additionally I view this as a land mark of his character development since Siege of the North. He used spirit powers for murder, now he's using them for mercy).
(A:TLA is also a show made with kids in mind. They may not be able to make Aang kill Ozai. He got his bending stolen and sentenced to prison for the rest of his life. That's a more than serviceable punishment for a show aimed at kids).
(Ps: If Ozai had died Zuko would never have found out where his mother is).
The concept is fantastic. Nothing wrong there. But now, it's time for the critisism.
What's the problem then?
Despite looking in internet forums, it's entirely possible that I missed some things. With that being said, the Lion Turtles could have been foreshadowed better. As I stated, I don't mind it. But as far as I recall, it was foreshadowed once in The Library, and that's it. (Edit: It's also foreshadowed in Sokka's Master and The Beach, but the point still stands).
The Lion Turtle is a twist, it subverted expectations, but that doesn't mean it has to be a deus ex machina. That's what foreshadowing is for. It's the literary device to making a plot twist feel believable. The result is many fans, including me, feeling as though it came out of no where, even though it didn't.
Overall, I love that Aang spared Ozai. It ties into the themes of the show and Aang's role as the last airbender. It makes perfect sense, it's rather beautiful. However, I do wish the foreshadowing was better.
And for Anon, to apologize for the wait, I dedicate you this meme:

Hello everyone, as of recently, I have been getting hate for being a Zutara shipper. If you follow me or are a fellow mutual of mine, you know I remain respectful of everyone and try to be kind to everyone I come across. I also have my limits of keeping a smile on my face and watching this keep happening to me. I want to remind antis that the blog you are coming to spew hate to is run by a 19-year-old. It does not make you look good dragging a teenager (and to some people a CHILD). I have been told to off myself once and that was enough to lie low and go away for a month. I have intrusive thoughts I have to deal with every single day, don't make it harder than it already is. You coming to my page to “teach” me and open my eyes to how great aang and kataang is. Your not going to change my mind. Insulting me, telling me to off myself and outright calling a WOC's fears that came true in a character bullsh*t is insane. I want to be fair and kind. However, the more antis come to my page, the more bitter I get. I don't get into fights and don't use lewd language. I stay in my own lane and try to provide my perspectives in the community only to create healthy discussions. By the way, I have managed to do that and I'm proud I have done that. If you want to accuse me of things I'm not, I invite you to my page to read in-depth works about my opinions on Kataang and Aang. If I don't like a ship because a character forced himself onto his love interest, what's it to you. It's a perfectly valid reason. A DAMN good one at that. My question to you is, why don't you have a problem with those kisses?
When you try to humble me, you only make me determined to create better works.
I stay in my lane, and you STAY in your damn lane.
Don't dare look in my direction again with your hateful words.
I want to remain kind and thoughtful, don't make active moves to change that.

Destined
Zuko hated the idea of destiny. It seemed that nothing he actually chose for himself really mattered. Did anyone ask if he wanted to be the Fire Lord to lead the country out of war? Did anyone care? No, it seemed they did not. When he tried to talk to his uncle, he got nowhere. Iroh empathized with his nephew-of course he did- but it was not his destiny to lead the Fire Nation. No, his destiny was a tea shop where he could make small talk with his regulars.
Bitterness got him nowhere, though. Zuko realized that on one level. On another level, he wasn't even twenty yet, and he was already finding grey hairs from the stress. He loved his country. He loved it enough to shudder at the idea of the power vacuum that would form if he should ever abdicate. The throne, he'd realized long ago, was his destiny. Sometimes, destiny felt like a shackle.
Katara felt like a prisoner. She loved Aang. Of course she loved him. She wouldn't be here if she didn't. He'd chosen the Southern Air Temple as their home, and she'd loved being introduced to his culture. Truly she had. But Katara also wished that Aang would be more open to incorporating more of her culture, too. It wasn't like everything the in the Southern Water Tribe had to do with bringing animal products into the home. Katara had given up her warm furs and hearty stews. For the most part. She still partook whenever she was home, which was oftener than Aang liked, but not enough for Katara. She felt like a foreigner in the wide halls of the air temple. Especially since the Acolytes had taken residence.
The Acolytes were a particularly sore point for Katara. The way they fawned over Aang hit the back of her mouth like a bitter melon and made her jaw clench. Aang swore up and down that she didn't need to feel intimidated by them. That once she'd gotten used to the way things worked around the air temple, she would feel much better. And she would get used to it. She had to. It was her destiny to be with Aang forever. He was the the powerful bender she was supposed to end up with. That's what Aang kept reminding her when she brought up how uncomfortable his relationship with some of the Acolytes made her. That's what he said when he failed to stop them from making comments about her being the Avatar's First Girlfriend, or from sticking their noses into her business about the few Southern Tribe artifacts she kept in her own room. So what if they happened to be made of bits of animals? She wasn't going to get rid of the ram seal horn her father and brother painstakingly carved for her, or the fur parka her Gran Gran sewed for her no matter how many disapproving looks she got over them.
"We'll figure it out," Aang often told her. "You and me are destined, so it has to work out."
Destiny felt like a weight. Duty more than inclination steered the ship, but maybe the ship would be better dashed against the rocks and sunk to the ocean floor.
It was completely by accident that they discovered they felt the same way about destiny. Zuko had been looking for a place to hide from the foreign diplomats attempting to corner him into discussions he was far too overwhelmed, and they far too many drinks in to discuss at the opening banquet of the sixth annual Summit. He found Katara had not only discovered his favorite hiding place, but had set up camp with an assortment of grilled meats on a stick- a Fire Nation specialty that had until Zuko's reign been more popular among the populace than the upper class.
"Sorry," Zuko said, already backing out of the secluded balcony.
"For what?" Katara asked. "This is your home. You have more a right to be here than I do." She had a point, Zuko had to admit. Not out loud, but still.
"I didn't mean to disturb you," he told Katara.
"You haven't," she assured him. She gestured to her meal with a rueful smile. "I just didn't want Aang shaking his head at me while I ate. I don't mind having company... Or would you rather not have company?"
"I didn't really want company," Zuko admitted. "Not of most people here. But I wouldn't mind yours." Katara smiled and slid her plate towards him.
"I'm not going to be able to finish all of this on my own," she told him. "My eyes were bigger than my stomach this time." Zuko took a skewer awkwardly and sat beside Katara.
"Is Aang really that bad that you have to eat meat in secret?" he asked half-joking. Katara rolled her eyes.
"Killing animals just to eat is wrong!" she mimicked his preaching tone. "How would you feel if it was Appa or Momo you were being served?"
"Sorry I asked," Zuko chuckled. "I won't tell about your secret meal if you don't tell that I'm hiding from King Kuei."
"Well, he is very intimidating," Katara chuckled.
"You laugh," Zuko said dryly. "Have you ever been cornered by him? The guy can never just get to the point. He has to talk around the issue in circles until I want to scream at him to just spit it out. But I can't do that because I'm the Fire Lord." Zuko scowled off into the distance and took an aggressive bite out of his skewer.
"If it helps," Katara said hesitantly. She cleared her throat. "If it helps, I think you're doing an amazing job."
"Yeah?" Zuko smirked at her. "Glad someone thinks so."
"I'm sure a lot of people think so," Katara insisted. She turned towards him and held his gaze. "Zuko, you're doing an amazing job as Fire Lord. I'm glad it's you who ended up on the throne."
"I know, I know," Zuko scoffed. "It's my destiny."
"No," Katara said slowly. "I think...I think it's more than destiny. I think you were the right person for the job because you chose to be."
"Is that what you think?" Zuko asked, raising his brow at her. Katara nodded firmly.
"What is destiny, anyway?" she asked. She sounded strangely emotional. Zuko eyed her worriedly. Katara held a skewer in a grip so tight, Zuko was worried the stick would snap. But she took a breath and found a wavery smile.
"I think what makes you such a great Fire Lord is the fact that you care," she said. "Maybe it was your destiny to lead the Fire Nation, but it's who you are that makes you so good at it."
"You think so?" Zuko asked. Katara nodded firmly.
"Just because you're destined for something doesn't necessarily mean it's supposed to be something good. I think..." Katara frowned and thought for a moment. "I think maybe someone's destiny isn't supposed to be good. After all, it seems like Ozai was destined to be Fire Lord. At least for a little while. Even the war must have been destined. So if destiny can be good or bad, then maybe it's up to us to decide which it's going to be."
Zuko had the distinct feeling that Katara wasn't just talking about his destiny as Fire Lord. This felt more personal. This felt like a moment for him to say something profound. He had nothing.
"Not everything is destiny," he tried, hoping that he could help her with whatever it was that had made her so morose.
"How do you know which is which, then?" Katara asked. Zuko shrugged. He leaned back against the wall and looked up at the stars.
"I don't know," he admitted. "Maybe...maybe trying to identify destiny is a mistake. Maybe...it's more important to try to do what's right. Even when it's hard."
"But how do I know what's right?" Katara huffed, and leaned back against the wall beside Zuko.
"i don't really know." Zuko chewed his lip pensively. "When Uncle told me he wouldn't take the throne, I thought it was a huge mistake. I thought he was the best fit for it. After all, of the two of us, he was actually groomed for the part. But after I took the throne....? I don't know...It didn't feel right immediately. It still doesn't feel right to me sometimes, but I did it. At the time, I resented uncle for not at least taking the throne until I was of age, but now that I've been Fire Lord for a few years, I get it. Uncle...he is a good man, but he did some terrible things. He's tried to make up for it, but it was never going to be enough. Not enough to expect everyone to be comfortable with him on the throne. I get it now. I think me taking the throne was the right thing to do. It has been hard. It's been lonely, too. But it was the best call either of us could make.
"But you didn't know it was right when you did it," Katara pointed out.
"No," Zuko tapped his finger thoughtfully on the flagstone. "I don't think I was completely sure that I was the best fit for Fire Lord. I still think Uncle would've been the better choice, history aside. I think there are a lot of much smarter people who probably deserve to be here instead of me. But I also know that there wasn't anyone who had a shot at taking the throne who would care about reparations to the other countries, or about rebuilding for the lower classes. I love my people, Katara, and I think...I think that helped me figure out what I needed to do, even if I don't always like it. I almost never like it."
Katara blinked hard against the tears that had suddenly sprang up in her eyes. She reached out for his and squeezed it tight. She knew how hard leading was for Zuko at times. He did it gracefully, though. He did it fairly, and she could see the progress the Fire Nation had made under him. It wasn't perfect by any means, but it was substantial. If only she could feel that, at least. If only her destiny could make her feel half so accomplished.
"I wish I didn't know what my destiny was," she sighed. "Maybe if I felt like I had even as much choice as you have, I'd feel better." Zuko shot her a strange look. He had so many questions, but none of them felt appropriate. Instead he sighed and scooted closer to Katara.
"Maybe you need to focus less on what you think your destiny is and focus more on what you feel is right," he said. "I know you. Your sense of right and wrong is...well, it's unshakeable. I trust your judgement, even if you don't. If you were making the right choices, you wouldn't feel this conflicted. Even if your choice made you uncomfortable, if you thought it was the right one...well, you wouldn't be on a balcony alone eating secret yakitori." Zuko held up a skewer and waved it at Katara. She laughed and pushed his hand away.
"What if I make a choice and it's the wrong one?" Katara asked.
"I don't see that happening," Zuko said, grinning at her. "But even if you do make a mistake, I think you're smart enough to fix it. I'd help you, if you wanted. And so would Sokka and the Chief. So would all of us." Katara flinched at that. Zuko pretended not to notice.
"What would you do if you didn't know your destiny?" he asked. Katara sat quietly for a long while, looking thoughtfully across the garden below. She absently ran her thumb over Zuko's fingers.
"I think ...I think I'd like to go back to the Northern Tribe," she said. "To finish learning healing from Yugoda. Then I'd like to go the Foggy Swamp and learn swampbending. Then I'd like to find every copy of Southern style bending scrolls I could get my hands on and learn that, too."
"Then you should!" Zuko insisted. "Do that. I'll help when I can. My grandfather kept things from every nation he could. I'm having everything organized and sent back to where they came from. I'm working on the Earth Kingdom now, but I don't have anyone to help sort through all the Water Tribe artifacts. The job is yours, if you want it.
"Are you serious?" Katara gasped. Zuko nodded with a grin.
"I was planning to ask your father to recommend someone soon," he told Katara. "Maybe it's your destiny to do that, for whatever it's worth. I mean, it's an important job, but it's not a long one. Maybe six months to a year. But maybe it'll give you a chance to think about what you want. What you think it the right thing for you to do."
Katara considered his offer for a moment. Her initial reaction was to insist that she couldn't do that. That Aang needed her. But she bit her tongue and thought. What did Aang need her for? She cooked his meals, kept the Air Temple tidy, and kept his diary for him. It was important to keep the Avatar on task, but was it right? Was it right for her?
Soon, all the points in favor of it presented themselves. Sure keeping the Avatar on track was important, but reclaiming all of the Southern style bending she could? Learning everything she could about waterbending? The thought made her heart ache with a longing she'd almost forgotten how to feel. If Aang really was her destiny, he'd understand why she wanted to do this. After all, he was also working to reclaim Air Nomad culture.
It was tempting.
It was tempting.
It was...
"I think..." Katara said slowly. She cleared her throat again and turned to Zuko. "I think I'll do that."
"Really?" Zuko's face lit up.
"Really," Katara said, nodding once sharply. Then she smirked at Zuko. "You're going to get sick of having me around."
"Never that," he swore. "Never, ever that."

I feel like rambling about Avatar Kuruk, so here we go!
I read the Kyoshi novels this summer (so SO good - F.C. Yee truly is a great author) and LOVED getting to see Kyoshi’s journey!
Alongside Kyoshi’s story, I found that I really enjoyed learning about Kuruk too.
But his story is so incredibly tragic.
I picture him as a 16 year old boy, wide eyed and optimistic as he is told that he is the Avatar. Not only that, but he is the successor to Yangchen, who was INCREDIBLY revered. He has big shoes to fill, but he’s ready to do this.
What 16 year old doesn’t dream about becoming a legend, a hero, a savior?
So, he begins his journey.
But it is not the journey he dreamed of.
The day he discovers the dark spirits is the day everything changes.
He fights. He fights these spirits to protect the mortal world, even though it costs him everything. It costs him his love, Ummi. It costs him his friendships. Hell, it costs him his own lifeforce.
Most of all, it costs him his legacy.
Avatar Yangchen was very well-respected, and he can’t bear to tarnish her image. So he copes as best he can and allows the world to think of him as the playboy Avatar. The Avatar who didn’t care. The “go with the flow” boy who never grew up.
And then he dies at 33 years old, having taken up the burden of the spirits alone.
Even Kyoshi doesn’t think highly of him for a long time. She heard the stories and thought he was a waste of an Avatar until she finally communes with him and learns his story.
The rest of the world continues to invoke Yangchen’s spirit, never knowing that Kuruk was the one who protected her name at the cost of his own.
Yangchen was an amazing Avatar who did her best with the tools she had, but so was Kuruk.
And the world didn’t see that.
Even when speaking to Aang, many generations after his death, he STILL protects Yangchen’s name by positioning himself as the “young and reckless” Avatar. (Yes I know the books were written longggg after and I’m sure this backstory wasn’t fully canon at the time of the show, but this is how I see it-)
Anyway just…it’s so sad. It was such a good way to write his story, and it really made me feel so much for him!

A/N: The aftermath of it all.
Sokka and Aang were the ones to help him back to his room. They had to carry him partially, his arms slung over both their shoulders to keep his legs from buckling under him. Yes, Zuko was in pain, but he wasn't about to pass out from it or anything, so best to stay on his feet.
Though he was exponentially glad when he finally sat down on his bed. The ache across his chest had intensified and his back was killing him.
"Are you sure you're going to be alright?" Aang asked, hovering over the Prince who sat on his bed hunched over slightly against the pain. His hair did well to hide his expression, so Zuko simply nodded. "I'm fine. I just need to sleep it off."
The Avatar glanced at Sokka, and the two of them shared a worried look. "Well, if you need anything just tap the floor, Toph will be able to sense it." Aang said, gesturing to the younger girl who stood at the doorway with Katara beside her.
Zuko only nodded.
Though hesitant the two boys walked out, lingering in the doorway for a few seconds. And once they were sure that Zuko wasn't going to fall over, they left.
Sensing they were gone, Zuko let out the groan of pain he had been holding back, his hand reaching to press against the center of his chest where the whip had caught him. Carefully, so as not to aggravate his injuries any further, he removed the two layers he'd been wearing to assess the damage.
He glanced down and winced.
Already the wound was discoloring across the expanse of his chest, running in a horizontal line. The bruise was easily the size of his palm, not to mention the strength and power that had been behind it.
At least he could breath properly, he noted after he had taken a deep breath. That meant no broken ribs. Thank Agni for little miracles. His back though, he couldn't get a look at, so he was left to imagine how many bruises were forming there.
He had also hit the back of his head, judging by the sensitive spot and the lump growing in that particular area. Which meant that he shouldn't sleep for a while.
Though he had told Aang he would sleep it off, it was the furthest thing from his mind.
What occupied his mind was Orora.
And the look of pure horror she had worn before racing out of the fountain hall.
He'd seen her, having tilted his head to the side and catching a glimpse of her through the feet that surrounded him.
Gently resting his head on the wall against which his bed was pushed up, he stared at the ceiling. Knowing Orora, and he knew her rather well, she was probably beating herself up about hurting him.
He wanted to go and find her, to go and tell her that it wasn't her fault. After all, he'd been the one to offer her to let loose all her emotions on him. He just hadn't been fast enough.
Truth be told, he'd forgotten how fierce she could get in battle.
His mind drifted back to their first ever battle, back near that lake when they were still living as refugees. He'd managed to best her because she'd been inexperienced.
But now?
He wandered if she was at Master level yet. Though he hadn't been fighting her himself, Zuko was aware enough to know a strong bender when he ran into one. And Orora had become very strong. His Uncle would be proud to see her progress, the young Prince thought to himself, glancing at the portrait of the man he had set on his bedside.
Zuko missed him. Terribly. And he wished, more then ever, that Iroh was there with him now. With both of them, to help give words of wisdom and try to get past whatever barriers that remained between them. Then again, Uncle would advise them to work it out themselves. Aside from that one time he had set his nephew on that had resulted in him and Orora getting closer, Zuko didn't think his Uncle had ever meddled in either of their proceedings as soulmates.
Agni, he had no idea how long it would take him to win back Orora's trust. He was actually counting on her kind and soft heart to give him some leeway, and yet he knew her to be stubborn enough to not make it easy for him.
He didn't blame her though. Besides, he knew it would take time. It had taken a long time for her to actually start trusting him when they first met.
Slowly, his thoughts began to grow fuzzy, and he drifted in and out of memories. All of which involved his soulmate one way or the other.
Zuko had no idea how long he sat there, lost in his thoughts, his body aching all over.
That is until he felt his finger tug and his relieved golden amber eyes opened to meet a pair of worried and guilt-ridden ice blue eyes.
————————–
Their little battle had happened earlier in the evening.
And now it was getting late.
Orora had only managed to gather strength once the moon had appeared in the sky and she'd been able to rise to her feet, her legs trembling as she did. Looking around, she found herself to have taken refuge in a rather familiar looking clearing.
One that had been a campsite for her and Zuko when they had first arrived.
The waterbender had stood there, staring up at the moon through the branches and leaves that slightly obscured her vision. The gentle breeze allowed her an undisturbed view every now and then. Normally she would've spoken to the moon, would've revealed all that she was feeling and feel better for it.
But right then she just felt numb and empty.
All that she kept seeing in her mind's eye was her water whip, as it flew through the air, hitting Zuko in the chest and making him fly back and smack against the wall with a sickening thud.
Over and over and over.
She didn't cry though. Maybe she had finally run out of tears?
A headache was beginning to throb just behind her red rimmed eyes, and some of her hair stuck to her wet cheeks. Brushing them back, and wiping at her cheeks, the girl slowly, albeit reluctantly, began to make her way back down to the Temple with timid steps.
Once she'd climbed down the stairs, she retrieved her medicinal bag and water skin from her room. Guilt gnawed away against her very skin, her expression one of apprehensiveness as she made her way to where Zuko's room was.
While one part of her screamed at her to stay away from him, lest she hurt him again, the other part urged her, pushed her, to go see how he was.
To make sure he was alright.
And that was how she found herself standing at Zuko's doorway, her eyes wide as a horrified sound fell from her lips at the sight of his bruised torso.
————————–
"Its not as bad as it looks." Were the first words out of Zuko's mouth as he straightened up, only to wince at the sharp pain that radiated across his back and chest. He brought up a hand to rest it gently against the whip mark. Orora remained where she was, now biting her lower lip, her knuckles white from where she was clutching her bag and water skin to her chest.
Allowing her a few moments to collect herself, Zuko cleared his throat. "You gonna stand there or are you gonna come in and heal me?" He asked, raising an eyebrow at her. A look of surprise flitted across her features. "How did you-" She trailed off, wandering why he would say that after what she had just done to him.
The firebender shrugged. "Well, you always said you were a Healer first and foremost and then a Fighter, so I figured that's why you're here." Quickly pointing towards a cluster of candles, he lit them to give the room some more light for her to work in. "Yeah." She said, her shoulder drooping visibly, her eyes never once leaving the ugly bruise along his chest. "But....only if you want me to." The waterbender said, her voice small, and so utterly unlike her.
Zuko frowned. "Why wouldn't I want you to heal me? You've done it before, and to great results. Remember the time when I was sick?" The memory only served to remind her just how close she had gotten to loosing him to the fever that had raged his body for days. "I meant," She paused, gulping back a lump in her throat. "I meant after what I did."
She was still standing in the doorway, looking almost afraid. And she felt it too, afraid that she might hurt Zuko again. It was a ridiculous notion since Orora knew she wouldn't. In all honesty though, she just didn't trust herself. Realization dawned on him, and he pursed his lips. His suspicion had proven true, she did blame herself.
"There is no one in this world I would trust more to heal me then you Orora."
He didn't just mean his physical injuries.
Maybe she picked up on it, or perhaps she didn't. Whatever her perception, it caused her to look at him, finally meeting his eyes since she had stepped in his presence. He could imagine the storm of emotions that raged behind her ice blue eyes, and yet she was looking at him with a level of surprise, confusion and something else he couldn't identify.
Slowly she took one step forward.
Then another.
Then another.
Until she stood at the head of the bed, placing her bag and water skin next to the portrait of Iroh. She did glance at it, but now wasn't the time to admire the likeness in charcoal. Closing her eyes, she inhaled deeply before exhaling through her mouth. It wasn't difficult to allow the Healer within her to awaken and take charge.
Coating her hands with the clean water and activating her Healing Abilities, obvious since the water began to glow, Orora moved to sit down next to him. Zuko pushed himself forward so that he could rest his feet on the floor. Purposefully not making eye contact with the Prince, the girl pressed her hands against his abdomen. Though he hissed slightly, Zuko managed to hold back any other sounds of pain aside from an occasional sigh of relief as her Healing Abilities soothed the bruised skin and aching muscles.
And while Orora kept her gaze fixed on the wounds as she healed, Zuko's gaze never once wavered from her face.
He tried hard not to look at her, but he couldn't help himself. She hadn't washed her face, he noted the tear tracks, and her hair was in tangles, since she hadn't bothered to pull them up in a ponytail or comb through them. The look of sheer concentration on her face would slip every now and then, to one of guilt and concern, when he would react to the pain. The flickering candles cast a shadow across her face, making her appear even more downcast then she looked.
It only took her ten minutes until the bruise on his chest was near fading, looking as if it were a few days old rather then having just been inflicted a few hours ago.
"Turn." She said, her soft voice echoing in the otherwise silent room. Zuko mutely obeyed, turning around so she could assess his back as well as the back of his head. Repeating the same process that she had his chest, it took another ten minutes for her to heal the sporadic bruises across the broad expanse of his back, before shifting her attention to the back of his head. Another five minutes, and she was done.
Though the last session went by quicker because she had to brush away some of his hair to get to the swollen area, and the way his body had tensed had not gone unnoticed by her. Neither had the fact that she had unconsciously noted that his hair was just as soft as she remembered it to be.
Finally, once she was satisfied that there were no more bruises she could physically heal, the girl pulled back her hands, bending the water back into the water skin and standing up. "You should take something for the pain." She said, as Zuko lifted a hand to rub the spot where it had been hurting just a few minutes ago. Opening her bag, Orora quickly sifted through the various small pouches within. Once she'd selected one, she pulled it out.
Only for her eyes to fall on the portrait she had barely glanced over half an hour ago. Zuko glanced at her from where he had been pulling on his inner shirt. She paused, the pouch in her hand, while with the other she delicately picked up the frame. Even though it was a drawing, Orora could see the ever-present kindness that had always twinkled in her Master's eyes.
Zuko straightened so he could sit properly, just as Orora sat back down next to him. "Was he alright? When you would go see him?" She asked, her voice holding the pain of missing the kindest man she could ever know. The Prince nodded, his warm gaze flicking from the portrait she held to her face. "Yeah, he mentioned you whenever he spoke to me. He missed you." He revealed, hoping to alleviate some of the pain she felt in that moment.
It did, but it also made her miss him ever more.
Nodding, the girl set the frame back before holding out the pouch for him to take. "Here, just dissolve a pinch of the powder in water or tea and drink it at night before going to sleep. It'll help with any leftover pain." She promised, trying hard not to shudder when his fingers brushed against hers as he took the pouch. Wanting to ease her guilt Zuko decided to go for a rather direct tactic, lest she take the chance to walk away from him.
"It wasn't your fault Orora." Her jaw clenched at his words, and she looked away to stare at her hands which she had placed on her thighs. Her knuckles turned pale as they gripped the fabric of her shirt. "I should've been more on guard." He didn't look away from her, wanting to read her as much as he could to better handle the situation. "And I guess I underestimated you, you've become more powerful and skilled since the last time I saw you bend in battle."
His attempt to lighten the situation was met with a sharp intake of breath, followed by a shudder that wrecked through her entire body as she closed her eyes and shook her head. "Don't" She whispered, her hand hanging low, her hair acting as a curtain around her face, as if to hide her from the rest of the world.
To hide from him.
"Don't try to make it your fault Zuko." His eyes never wavered from her. Even though he couldn't see her face. "I shouldn't have let my anger get the better of me." She bit her lip, as if she were holding herself back from revealing something else.
And Zuko knew it too.
Knew it in the way she clenched her hands and the way her body tensed. Slightly hesitant, and yet hopeful at the same time, Zuko reached out, gently covering one of her hand with his own. Her reaction was immediate. Her mouth fell open, her breath hitched and her head lifted to meet his gaze. "You were right to be angry at me Orora." He said, his voice soft. "What I did and how much I hurt you, I don't even deserve to be in your presence."
Seems she hadn't run out of tears yet, judging by the burning behind her eyes as she tried blinking to keep them from falling. Her gaze dropped to where his hand was pressed atop hers.
There were three things Orora noticed about their hands. The contrast of their skin color, hers dark and his light. The feel of his callouses along his palm, probably from years of practicing his swordsmanship. But what she really noticed was how warm his hand was.
The one thing she ignored, though could not deny, was the glow of their strings.
Blue and red.
Neither of the strings had stopped glowing since their encounter earlier.
"I just..." She trailed off, swallowing the lump in her throat before starting again. "I just don't understand. Were we.....was I not enough for you?"
There.
It was out in the open.
The question that had haunted her every single day since Ba Sing Se.
Zuko's eyes widened as a horrible realization settled in his chest. His mind went blank for a brief moment, unable to comprehend the level of heartbreak Orora must've felt because she thought she hadn't been enough for him.
"No!" His reply came, quick and urgent. "No. No. No. No. No." He kept repeating. Against his better judgement, his other hand lifted to press his palm against the side of her cheek, guiding her face so that he could meet her eyes properly. Seeing her eyes shine with unshed tears only had his heart twisting in his chest. "Orora you-" He swallowed, trying to find the words to explain. "You were more then enough." His thumb traced a gentle path against her skin. "It was me. I thought you were leaving and I don't know, I guess I just......... just......" Zuko trailed off, sighing deeply, his eyes full of regret as he turned away from her, allowing his hands to fall away.
She instantly missed his warmth, while he missed her softness.
"My mother left me Orora. And I thought you were leaving me too. I thought that if I went back home then I wouldn't have to think about you leaving me because then I would've left first." Realization dawned on Orora, as her lips parted. Reaching out, she placed a hand on his shoulder. She felt him tense under her touch, but neither of them pulled away. "I was quick and rash about my decision, and because of that I lost you."
He lifted his head from where he had buried his forehead in his hand to look at her. "But believe me when I say, that I regretted it. The moment you were gone, I began to have doubts." His face was open and sincere as he continued. "When I was going back to the Fire Nation, and I realized I wouldn't be able to see you, talk to you, hold you, hug you, fight you, k-kiss you," He swallowed trying not to let his voice break even as a tear escaped his eye. "I knew I had made the worst decision I could ever have made." The final words were spoken barely above a whisper as silent tears paved a path down his cheeks.
Orora lifted her hand from his shoulder, only to cup his cheek the way he had hers just a few moments ago. She'd never seen Zuko cry, and it broke her heart to know just how much he had suffered because of what had happened to him in his past. Her thumb caught a tear, wiping it gently away, before she traced her fingers to the edge of his scar.
And after months of dreaming about it, of hoping that she wouldn't hate him so much that she never would do it again, her gentle fingers traced the scar that marred his face.
He closed his eyes, allowing himself to soak in the comfort of her touch as she brushed the tips of her fingers against his skin, tracing that familiar path she had memorized so long ago and still remembered it.
Slowly, the tears lessened before they finally stopped, and Zuko opened his eyes to see Orora offering him a tentative lilt of her head. He answered her silent question with a nod, reaching up to cover her hand with his own, savoring her touch for a few moments longer.
Her eyes dropped from his face to the fading bruise that still adorned his chest, a small part of it still visible since his shirt didn't cover the front of his chest completely. Unable to help herself, she found her fingers just barely touching the colored skin. Zuko barely moved, in truth he barely drew breath as he waited for her. He would've stayed like this, waiting for her to talk the entire night if he had to.
The silence prevailed. Yet this one was neither uncomfortable, nor was it heavy with unspoken feelings and doubts. They were both, finally, laying out the tiles on the table. Zuko had shown his White Lotus Tile, now it was her turn.
"I was so angry after you left." The girl began, her voice soft and low. "And for awhile I just stayed angry, but then I realized I was sad because I thought I hadn't been enough for you. To make you stay." His heart twinged at her words once again, but he kept quiet. "I kept it all in. Barely spoke to anyone about it and I was barely able to function."
She sighed, closing her eyes briefly before opening them again. "I finally broke and let everything out. Honestly, I had thought I'd moved past it but then I saw you again and all of it came rushing back." Unable to help himself, and wanting to provide her with the comfort she had given him, Zuko took the hand resting atop her thigh into both of his, giving it a light squeeze as he did.
"All that anger, it boiled inside me and I was unable to look past that anger and see that you had-no,have changed. I," She paused, pursing her lips, the devastation clear in her eyes. "I thought I hated you, and that devastated me." The waterbender finally revealed, feeling Zuko all but freeze in place.
Not wanting to loose him, and hoping to clear things, she continued, this time raising her eyes to meet his because she was desperate. Desperate for him to understand all that she had felt. "But then I realized I didn't, and that only made me more angry so I decided that I should just ignore you."
"But then you came in and you said to take it out on you and I did, and I hu-hurt you." Her words came out rushed and hurried, as if she were afraid she would loose her voice or perhaps her courage if she didn't reveal everything. "I hurt you even after I had promised myself that I would always protect you. You told me how so many people have hurt you, and I promised that I wouldn't be one of those people. But then I went and did exactly that. Just like your father. And-and..." She gasped for breath, the tears she had been holding back now streaming down her face as Zuko stared at her the shock evident on his face as he stared at her.
Did she really think that?
Did she really just compare herself to his father?!
Ever since they had met, it had been Orora who had comforted him. Who had shown him that there could be good in people, and that there was good in him. That he was not his family.
And now? It was his turn to make her see that she was one of the most beautiful people he had ever met. Both inside and out.
"No." He stated, his voice loud and determined as he glared at her. His proclamation was followed by a burst of light as his anger fueled the candles into burning brighter for a second before they resumed their gentle glow. Orora paused where she had opened her mouth to go on, gaping at him as the tears continued. "You are nothing like my father Orora." His voice one of conviction as he held her hand. "He's a heartless monster who doesn't care about anyone."
"But I hurt you Zuko." She tried to argue to which he responded with an answer that had her staring at him. "And I hurt you too didn't I? Does that make me like your father?"
The tears had finally stopped, and now they both just looked at one another. Zuko still held her hand in both of his, while her other hand had come to rest atop his chest in a gentle fist. Lifting her hand away from his warm skin, she gently pulled her hand out of his grip, before turning to sit straight once more.
"Orora." He said, his voice heavy, closing his eyes for a moment before continuing. "Neither of us will ever hope to move forward if we keep feeling guilty about hurting one another. I know you're still angry at me but, I just want you to be happy." He revealed, his hand finding the side of her face once again and turning her to face him. All so that he could force himself to look up her, to meet her gaze and answer any question she might have because she, at least, deserved that much honesty from him.
Though this time, even though he wanted to keep touching her, he pulled his hand back.
The girl shook her head, a look of resignation on her face as she sighed. "I can't be angry at you anymore Zuko." She whispered, and Zuko tried very hard not to let his hopes get too high. "I won't want to be angry anymore." Raising a hand to push back her hair from her face, the waterbender sighed yet again. "I'm just so tired."
"But what we had, that trust, its broken." She continued, once more turning her body towards him. Zuko nodded. "I know, and I am so so sorry for that Orora. I never realized how important it was until I lost it."
A nod followed his words almost immediately. "It will take time, to rebuild that trust again, just like it was the first time." Zuko, finally allowing his heart to swell with the hope he had denied himself earlier nodded. "I understand and I'm willing to do whatever I can to win your trust again Orora."
The two of them continued to gaze at one another, with Orora inwardly battling with herself, unable to decide whether she should ask what echoed in her heart. And Zuko sensed it, because he nodded at her in an encouraging manner.
"Is-is that all you're willing to win back? My trust?" She asked at last. Her heart was beating wildly in her chest and for a moment she thought that perhaps she had crossed a line. A brief flash of confusion sparked in his amber eyes, before he saw her blue gaze drop to their strings which were still glowing.
Eyes widening in realization, and a sharp breath sounding in the air, Zuko swallowed back the sudden lump that formed in his throat. His heart felt like it was doing flips in his chest, as he pursed his lips before speaking. "Do you want me to win back........more?"
Her reply was unsure and yet hopeful at the same time as she, looked away suddenly feeling shy.
"Maybe." She whispered.
Was it too much to ask of something like that? They were barely on speaking terms and here she was asking if they could be more?
Why?
Because during her meditation Orora had been able to comprehend just how easily they could loose one another. They were fighting in a war. What if the next time someone attacked, one of them didn't make it out?
So if he was willing to win back her trust, maybe he would be willing to win back her heart as well.
And if his reaction was anything to go by, what she had asked of him was perhaps something he wanted as well.
Because Zuko grabbed her arms and pulled her in for an embrace that was equal parts desperate as it was intimate. His arms came to wrap around her shoulders, while his face rested at the juncture between her neck and shoulder and he finally, finally, allowed himself to memorize her scent once again. Orora wasn't any better, she had her face buried in his chest, eyes closed as she savored his warmth as any remaining doubt she had were finally, finally, put to rest.
How long they stayed in that embrace? Neither of them had any idea. And even when Zuko pulled back, he didn't pull away. Instead he rested his forehead against her own, allowing them to stay close but so their eyes could meet.
"Then I'll devote every moment of my days to win you back Orora." He vowed, his face serious. "I promise, no matter how long it takes me."
With that, he reached into the pocket of the shirt he had pulled on, only to pull out an item she never thought she'd see again.
Her comb.
The one she had left back in Ba Sing Se.
Orora stared at it wide-eyed and in disbelief. "You dropped it during the fight." He explained, holding it out for her to take, which she did so, her fingers trembling slightly.
"Y-You kept it?" She asked, her voice barely above a whisper as she lifted her gaze from the comb to meet his.
"It was the only thing I had that would remind me of you."
A blush stole across her cheeks as he reached up to brush some of her unruly hair behind her ear. But then he paused as another idea sparked in his head. One that had nearly his entire face flushing red, but he barely took note. Taking the comb gently from her fingers, he placed it against the side of her head, just behind her ear and pushed it into place. "So, of course, I kept it." He finished, his fingers lingering against her hair far longer then it was appropriate.
Sighing deeply, Orora closed her eyes, savoring the closeness and warmth he provided that she had sorely missed. "This isn't going to be easy. Is it?" She asked, and though there was a touch of humor in her words, there was also uncertainty.
Zuko shrugged. "You're from the Water Tribe and I'm from the Fire Nation. This," He gestured to where their strings were glowing.
"Was never going to be easy."
They still had a long road ahead of them, but at least it was a road they would travel together.
A few minutes later Orora walked out of Zuko's room, holding her bag and water skins. The light of the moon danced along her face, as if it too shared in her joy of not going to bed with a heavy heart for the first time in weeks.
And within the confines of his room, Zuko stared up at the ceiling, a rare smile on his lips as he thank every Spirit there was that fate had allowed him another chance to win back his soulmate.
This time though, he had no intention of messing anything up like he had the first.
At least not intentionally.
————————–
As soon as Orora had disappeared into her room, several shadows began to stir.
First, Sokka was dropped from the ceiling by Aang, who had been holding him up. Both of them had been on the ground near Zuko's door and as soon as they had heard Orora bid him goodnight, the boys had panicked. And Aang had quickly opened his staff, grabbed Sokka and began to levitate in the air.
Second, Toph dropped her camouflage wall from behind which she and Katara stepped out off, with the latter brushing away stray stones from her hair.
Had they been spying since the beginning?
Yes.
Did any of them regret it?
Of course not.
Would they do it again?
..........
Yes, yes they would.

I wanna hear more avatar headcanons! From the novels or just the avatars themselves! I loved reading your kavik and yangchen hcs 🥹🫶🏻
ahhh thank you!! i'm glad you like my random thoughts lol 🫶
here are a few more random thoughts i've been having that i just haven't quite made into posts yet (mostly yangvik because i love them but some other avatars as well):
yangchen is actually a terrible cook 💀 she's basically always had people taking care of her so she never really needed to learn! she can make a good cup of tea and that's about it. she regularly burns rice. she's also just generally bad at remembering to feed herself. kavik, who is a decent cook, is largely the only reason she remembers to eat
as for the other known avatars: kyoshi is by FAR the best cook. she's genuinely good at it. aang is a very close second. roku, kuruk, and wan are all average at it. korra has been banned from every kitchen in republic city
yangchen and kavik both strike me as people who really enjoy physical touch. they both really enjoy cuddling with each other, even before their relationship turns more romantic. acts of service is also a major love language for them
i also feel very strongly that they never used typical labels for their relationship. they usually referred to each other as their 'partner', occasionally 'lover', but most often just continued to use 'companion'. these vague labels frustrate scholars to no end, and today in the atla universe nobody can agree on the nature of their relationship. which is exactly how they wanted it lol, they were extremely private about their relationship
yangchen does have the iconic crooked smile that all the avatars share, but it only comes out when she's well and truly happy about something
her laugh is the same way. she has a very convincing fake laugh, as her real laugh is kind of 'ugly'. it's some kind of snorting, wheezing sound that kind of sounds like she's dying but is also absolutely adorable. yangchen hates it. kavik adores it, and will make an absolute fool of himself trying to hear it
yangchen is a massive, merciless flirt and takes great pleasure in seeing just how red she can make kavik's face turn. but on the rare occasion kavik gets enough confidence to flirt back, she turns into a total mess
pik and pak's favorite place to sleep is right on top of kavik's face
because of how hard she works herself, yangchen often falls asleep in the strangest places. if she's actually tired, she can fall asleep literally anywhere. it's simultaneously a superpower and a massive annoyance
a somewhat sad/bittersweet headcanon i have is that yangchen dies first. i've seen a lot of people saying that she lives to 150 but i can't find a source for that anywhere so i'm choosing to ignore it. yangchen has already watched too many loved ones die, she doesn't need to see kavik die before her as well. they both live very long lives, but kavik outlives her by a few years. after yangchen's death, he returns home to the northern water tribe
at one point, only a few months before his death, he is out for a walk when a little toddler wanders up to him all alone. he chats with him for a few minutes until the boy's parents find them and thank him for watching over their son. 'kuruk, what have we told you about wandering off like that?' the mother asks. the toddler waves goodbye, and kavik walks home feeling oddly contented. he never meets the boy again, and he dies well before kuruk is revealed as the avatar, but he feels a sense of peace from the interaction, knowing deep down that yangchen has made it safely back into the material world
when kavik dies, he wills his bone necklace to kuruk's family. they don't understand why until kuruk's sixteenth birthday. (SERIOUSLY THEIR NECKLACES LOOK ALMOST IDENTICAL ITS WILD)
that's all the thoughts i can scrape up off the top of my head, but i'm just generally thinking about avatar characters All The Time lmao. thank you for asking!!!

Momo surprise
“I’m a little worried about Momo,” Aang said to his friends as they gathered around the morning campfire and started preparing for their day. “He’s been acting kind of off lately.”
The lemur in question was fussily nosing around Aang's abandoned bedroll in tight circles. As the group of teens watched, he laid down in a curl, chirped unhappily then got up and resumed tugging and scratching at the bedding. “How can you tell?” Sokka asked. He was by no means a lemur behavior expert. To him all of Momo’s actions were strange. It was possible that Aang's Avatar-ness gave him some kind of spirit connection to flying lemurs. Unlikely, but still possible.
“He doesn’t have as much energy, even though he’s sleeping more.” Aang explained, frowning. “You don’t think he’s sick, do you?”
“Maybe it’s the climate?” Katara offered helpfully. She wasn’t a lemur expert either, but she and Sokka had struggled the first few weeks with adjusting to the Earth Kingdom’s warmer weather. As far as she or anybody else knew, Momo has lived his entire life in the towering, windswept peaks around the Southern Air Temple, so maybe the sudden change had affected him too, she reasoned.
“It’s because you’ve been giving him too many treats,” Sokka told Aang matter-of-factly. Lemurs were outside of his wheelhouse, but he'd helped the older boys with conditioning the polar dogs for sled pulling every fall. Spoiled pups turned lazy and fat, a hard lesson to learn for the littler children who only wanted to express their love.
“You think so?” Aang looked contrite.
“Yup,” Sokka said as he reached to snag a piece of star berry off the board Katara was using to prepare their breakfast. He snatched his hand back with a squawk when she smacked him.
“He is looking a little pudgy, Aang,” Katara said without taking her eyes off the food. Poaching brothers were too wily to be given that kind of an opening.
“Monkey feathers. I just can’t resist him when he gives me The Eyes.”
“I know,” Katara agreed. “He’s weaponized his cuteness.” “You’re going to have to.” Sokka nimbly dodged a sister elbow, but he still didn’t quite manage to snag any tidbits from Katara’s pile of fruit. “It’s for his own good.”
Momo, apparently noticing he was being talked about, finally abandoned the bedding to perch on Katara’s knee. “No, bad lemur!” She snatched her cutting board up and held it over her head. “No more extras for you!”
Sokka whooped in victory as he snagged a slice of moon peach and popped it into his mouth before Katara could adjust her defenses. “You’re on a diet, mister,” he informed the lemur as he sucked the juice from his fingers.
Momo chittered and pinned his ears back.
“Sorry, buddy,” Aang said regretfully as he scooped Momo up and tucked him into the crook of his elbow. “I already gave you a big handful of lychee nuts when you woke me up, you’re gonna have to wait until lunch time for more food.”
Aang could never quite tell just how much human speech Momo understood, but the lemur appeared to grasp something about the situation. He curled his tail around and grasped it anxiously, cooing at Aang with all the force of The Eyes that one tiny flying mammal could muster.
Aang held strong. For all of three seconds. “Okay... well. Maybe a couple berries wouldn’t hurt?”
--------
“AAAAAANG!”
The young monk bolted upright in his bedroll at the sound of his name, startled out of a sound sleep. Sokka was loud. Loud and very upset.
“What!? What is it?” He blinked several times, then rubbed at his face, trying to get his eyes to focus on anything distinct before he realized the reason he couldn't see anything was because dawn was still hours away. The moon hung in the sky, a crescent barely thicker than a thumbnail, with no light to offer. Hedgegoosebumps broke out across his arms. Aang hugged himself as the night pressed in, suddenly no longer a sheltering veil, but full of hidden threat from enemies he couldn’t see.
The sleeping lump to his right rustled and shifted as Katara sat up in her bed roll. “Sokka-haaah,” her voice stuttered, breaking off with a yawn. “What's wrong?”
“What's wrong? What’s wrong!?” Sokka was rapidly climbing in pitch with each repetition. “Why don’t you look at this situation and tell me, huh?”
“Uhh.” Aang squinted into the dark and tried to make sense of their camp. Appa was still peacefully snoring several yards away, completely oblivious to the sudden chaos. Katara was wiggling and shuffling her way out of her sleeping bag, growling unflattering things at Sokka under her breath, and Sokka. Sokka was standing in the middle of their sleeping circle. He looked like he was holding something, but Aang could not for the life of him see what it was.
“We can't see anything without light, Sokka,” Katara groused. She finally won her struggle with her sleeping roll and started patting around for her bag. “You couldn't have lit a fire before you started yelling loud enough to alert the Fire Lord himself?”
“Oh, gee, why didn't I think of that! Could it possibly be because I'm dealing with Aang's mess over here!?”
Aang didn't remember leaving a mess. In fact he'd been careful to pack up everything before turning in for the night just in case they had to make a quick getaway. A few too many lost supplies had trained him quickly.
“What are you talking about?” He asked while stretching, less alarmed now that he knew Sokka was just. Well, being Sokka. They weren't being attacked, there was no life or death situation he had to fight through in the pitch dark.
Katara, having retrieved some kindling from her pack, scooted over to their banked campfire and began to poke the coals awake. She had apparently given up any hope of going back to sleep until her brother was sorted out. Even Appa was starting to rumble awake with the commotion.
“You said Momo was a boy!” Sokka hissed.
Aang. Blinked. “Yeah?” he said, uncertainty clouding his mind. He must still be dreaming, why would Sokka wake up the whole camp to debate their pet’s gender?
“Then explain this!” Sokka shoved his cupped hands out, away from the protective shield of his body, just as the fire flared with a pop and Katara's satisfied grunt.
Cradled in between his palms, fur still sodden and sticking, was the teeniest, tiniest lemur Aang had ever seen.
