I was writing for a fic recently and I realized something about Zuko and Teo.

They had canonically met before the Western Air Temple episodes.

Think about it - Teo’s dad says they’ve been at the Northern Air Temple since Teo was too young to remember, right? So what, at least a decade ago?

And directly after his banishment three years ago, which angry Emo Fire Boy was going around to all four of the Air Temples to search for the Avatar??

Yep. Zuko.

Zuko would’ve undoubtedly run in to the settlement at the Northern Air Temple, furious at the world and demanding that these refugees give up an Avatar that they didn’t have.

Serious missed opportunity for some Teo sass toward Zuko if they had actually let them interact on screen and address this😂😂

Teo: *Makes his way back to the Gaang after exploring the temple with Haru and The Duke* Hey guys, what’s up?

Aang: We found a firebending teacher for me!

Teo: Oh, sweet! Who?

Zuko: *Walks into Teo’s line of sight* That would be me.

Late night ramble because why not lmao.

As someone with PTSD, I loved the PTSD representation in The Legend of Korra!

First off, it is SO rare to get proper PTSD representation that isn’t a middle aged guy who is an army veteran/previous soldier/superhero (not that those sorts of characters are all poorly handled - I’m just trying to say that we need more than one singular type of PTSD representation). Part of what drew me to Korra in the first place was getting to see someone more like me who struggled with this!

And yes, Korra’s PTSD was made a bit more fantastical for younger audiences (like having a physical manifestation of her trauma follow her), but I do believe it was written very well! The meanings were all quite clear, and I personally saw a lot of similarities to my own PTSD in Korra’s struggles.

Anyway, all of this to say - I really appreciate LOK for offering this type of PTSD representation!! It was sorely needed and I really love Korra as a character!

I feel like rambling about Avatar Kuruk, so here we go!

I read the Kyoshi novels this summer (so SO good - F.C. Yee truly is a great author) and LOVED getting to see Kyoshi’s journey!

Alongside Kyoshi’s story, I found that I really enjoyed learning about Kuruk too.

But his story is so incredibly tragic.

I picture him as a 16 year old boy, wide eyed and optimistic as he is told that he is the Avatar. Not only that, but he is the successor to Yangchen, who was INCREDIBLY revered. He has big shoes to fill, but he’s ready to do this.

What 16 year old doesn’t dream about becoming a legend, a hero, a savior?

So, he begins his journey.

But it is not the journey he dreamed of.

The day he discovers the dark spirits is the day everything changes.

He fights. He fights these spirits to protect the mortal world, even though it costs him everything. It costs him his love, Ummi. It costs him his friendships. Hell, it costs him his own lifeforce.

Most of all, it costs him his legacy.

Avatar Yangchen was very well-respected, and he can’t bear to tarnish her image. So he copes as best he can and allows the world to think of him as the playboy Avatar. The Avatar who didn’t care. The “go with the flow” boy who never grew up.

And then he dies at 33 years old, having taken up the burden of the spirits alone.

Even Kyoshi doesn’t think highly of him for a long time. She heard the stories and thought he was a waste of an Avatar until she finally communes with him and learns his story.

The rest of the world continues to invoke Yangchen’s spirit, never knowing that Kuruk was the one who protected her name at the cost of his own.

Yangchen was an amazing Avatar who did her best with the tools she had, but so was Kuruk.

And the world didn’t see that.

Even when speaking to Aang, many generations after his death, he STILL protects Yangchen’s name by positioning himself as the “young and reckless” Avatar. (Yes I know the books were written longggg after and I’m sure this backstory wasn’t fully canon at the time of the show, but this is how I see it-)

Anyway just…it’s so sad. It was such a good way to write his story, and it really made me feel so much for him!

Buck and Chimney’s brotherly/brother-in-law relationship VERY much gives off a similar energy to Aang and Sokka’s brotherly/brother-in-law relationship.
