Honestly it's entirely unsurprising that I love the Hikari family, because they bring Major Gothic Novel Energy to what's otherwise trying to be a lighthearted shoujo series.

Like, the Niwas are all "Wacky hijinx!! Training montage!! Heist caper! Being possessed is fun and also a huge honor probably! Our family traditions are awesome pay no attention to the chained-up kid behind the curtain!"

Meanwhile the Hikaris are over here like "We will be PALE and FRAGILE and TRAGICALLY BEAUTIFUL and DYING OF MYSTERIOUS POORLY-DEFINED ILLNESS. We will WALK THE LINE between GENIUS and MADNESS. We will DEFY THE LAWS OF GOD AND MAN and BE PUNISHED FOR OUR HUBRIS. We are CURSED. We are SUFFERING. We are POSSESSED. We will pour our lifeblood into STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL ARTWORK filled with CURSED MAGIC. We will hide them away in GIANT MANSIONS with TOWERS and LABYRINTHS for no apparent reason except the aesthetic. My love has recently returned from the war (I realised Digimon Adventure is one of my comfort shows so I rewatched a few episodes).

And I'm once again wondering why Takari isn't canon. I shipped these two before I knew what shipping was. And then I found out from different comments on the internet that there is a place where they're established as ending together in the epilogue of 02.

I've scrounged the internet. I looked for CD drama translations. There's apparently novels which I didn't know about. Some people say in the Japanese original it's said, but the ones I found didn't say anything in the subtitles to that. I did find however that in the English dub of Filipino Tai's son calls TK his uncle, so it's canon in that one at least (I checked myself).

But it still wasn't enough for me, then it hit me. I live in delulu land. And TK, who narrates the epilogue, never explicitly says Yamato and Sora got married. It's just inferred visually. He only explicitly says that Yolei and Ken get married. With that in mind I made my own explanation of how Takari is canon within the epilogue.

Besides the fact that Kari's son does resemble TK as a child A LOT, meaning visually we could connect the two. And that nothing else says that they didn't end up together, without being more of a deduction then said. I present my delulu solution:

Takari is a family with two sons. Kari and their eldest son went to the Digital World first and their youngest chose to stay and wait until TK finished what he was writing so he would get to go with his dad.

Just putting some world building stuff I've come up with for the Legends Arceus AU. Rei edition.

Rei's family has worked under Kamado's for at least two generations via a hoko contract. His parents were farmers, so they were tenant farmers back in Johto. They went with him to Hisui as part of the Agricultural Corps, but passed away due to a cholera outbreak that occurred when the initial settlement was being built.

As a result Rei inherited their debt and Kamado now owns his contract. He was a tween when they passed, about 11 or 12, so he just did odd jobs that were expected of all of the kids for a few years. He picked up some Galarian because of foreign merchants and investors visiting Kamado's family back in Johto, and as a child he's easy to spare so eventually he took on the role as an interpreter for the Team when they had visitors (re:investors) staying.

That's how Professor Laventon was introduced to him. Galarian Professor with a rudimentary understanding of the language? Rei's not that busy unlike the workers of the Supply Corps. Laventon would show him what he was doing since Rei was so curious, and eventually had Rei helping him out with small stuff evolved into Rei really wanting to be his apprentice.

So Rei works and studies under Laventon because it's technically free. Laventon won't charge for Rei to study under him, and Rei already got room and board considering his contract so Kamado makes out because now he's having a Galarian professor train one of his people? And he's already being paid to have said Galarian Professor here? It's a win/win station. Rei technically doesn't get paid an income because his salary is so low and all of it goes to paying back his parents loan, and Survey Corps work is dangerous (and scary) but he really does love what he's doing and got pretty attached to Laventon.

Post PLA when the Pokédex it published and Laventon is winning awards and getting actual money he pays off Rei's family loan in full and Rei studies at a Galarian university, then moves back to Hisui (now Sinnoh) as a Professor. His apprentice is Kamado's granddaughter. (How the Kamado to Professor Rowan pipeline got started)
