“average jrwi fan writes 5.869 words of kian stone fanfic” factoid actualy just statistical error. average jrwi fan writes 0 words of kian stone fanfic. Words Georg, who goes by plant & writes over 1000 words of kian fanfic each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
#in honor of it having been a year since my first fic was posted#have a spiders georg parody about it#these stats come from me counting how many words of kian stone fanfic there are and then dividing that by number of subscribers of jrwi#keep in mind that these numbers are imperfect because i have some people muted and i didnt include like. collections of multiple fics#because if theres like 100k words in a fic technically but only 5k or something of that is even bitb that would screw the numbers#anyways#yippee happy one year to me#jrwi bitb#plantboytalking#blood in the bayou#kian stone#jrwi show#plantinthebayou#just roll with it#plantwriting

I think I’ve figured out what it is I love about tumblr. I think it’s that it’s so slow paced compared to other social media cites. They all have trends that peak and die as fast as they appeared. And yes, there are still trends on tumblr; vanilla extract, spiders georg, the bug race. People make parodies of posts that blow up. But they stick. People pass around the originals for years after the parodies have disappeared. And we get all excited to see the original cause we still hear it quoted. It becomes part of the tumblr culture and that’s what I think I love. The culture. The fact we have our own jokes that you learn and pass down and quote. It feels like a part of our history. And that’s what other social media doesn’t have. No one on the other apps will be referencing that trend that happened two months ago. But on tumblr? There are post we still reference frequently that are old enough to have children. And I just love it.

hello hi hm do you mayhaps have any howard the duck fun facts that movie Fasinated me
you have activated my autism from over a year ago so Brace Yourself because this is straight up going to be a history lesson in. duck comic/movie
i think I'm just going to tell you the full history of Howard as a character. yeah sorry.
so Howard was created kind of as a joke in 1974 in a marvel comic series called Adventure into fear written by Steve Gerber. he didn't intend on using this smoking, swearing, slightly off donald duck parody of a character very much and just killed him off like an issue after introducting him but people really didn't like that. like REALLY didn't like that. they sent in dead ducks to marvel through mail as protest I'm Not even joking!
so Gerber brought Howard back in the Giant-sized Man-thing series. this is where the lore of him falling to earth from space and landing in Cleveland started. he was sort of having these solo adventures where he fought first a frog man and then a vampire cow (Bessie the hellcow my beloved!!! i love her!!) and also went to jail that was a whole thing. but basically the whole experience left him miserable and suicidal. cut to his solo comic run starting in 1976. Howard the duck comics officially start and it's with Howard contemplating suicide and he gets really close to comitting before he meets Beverly and they go through this little adventure together to escape a financial wizard and fucking Spider-man shows up?? it's a whole thing, Howard ends up moving in with Bev instead of killing himself by the end
I'm not going to explain the whole original Howard comic run I'll just say it's a wild ride that includes Howard running for president (he received actual real life write in votes!!) then having a mental breakdown after fighting a canadian beaver man and bonding with some random neurodivergent girl he met on a bus after fighting with his nemesis the kidney lady again, Beverly being forced to marry a man who calls himself doctor bong and wears a bell on his head then divorcing him after cloning him and threatening to sue for child neglect (Gerber admitted that the drug reference was fully unintentional which is really funny to me), Howard punching a homophobe in the face and etc this is barely scratching the surface.
there's also issue #16 which is infamous for being right before a very big story arc and not having anything to do with the plot because Gerber missed his deadline again and he decided to just. write an essay on deadlines instead. yeah so basically he was too neurodivergent for this and I'm not just saying that he legitimately was neurodivergent he got fired from marvel for missing too many deadlines eventually.
that is when things got.. interesting with Howard. the original run wasn't finished at all yet so they kind of had to get other people to finish it but it didn't really work anymore and then they even made a black and white htd magazine which wasn't very popular but my personal hot take is that I'm a big fan of it actually.
there's also the lawsuit where Disney caught up that this guy looks dangerously similar to donald duck so their solutions was to just.. force Howard to wear pants. well that's an oversimplification they made more rules for how he has to look but the pants thing is objectively the funniest. also this happened back when Gerber was writing Howard he just refused to comfort to these rules so instead they got implemented during the magazine in a pretty iconic storyline imo. anyways the point is there's a lot of insanity around this.
and then the movie. i already mentioned that George Lucas was a big fan of the original comics and wanted to adapt it to a movie but instead of doing it himself he asked his friends Willard Hyuck and Gloria Katz to direct it and while he produced it. except as i also already mentioned said friends knew nothing about the comics and i.. don't think they ever really read them?
there were also a lot of things they wanted to do but couldn't like they originally wanted it to be animated but didn't have the budget, they originally got Robin Williams to voice Howard but he gave up because he found the role too limiting (and I'm honestly glad for that because i wouldn't have ever gotten into htd if it wasn't for Chip Howard) and the fact that they were pretty limited by the studio they were working with into some plot beats. it was kind of just a disaster all around with a lot of creative differences and technical limitations all over the place.
also as i said Robin Williams was supposed to voice Howard originally and they had to replace him really last minute and didn't really know what to do until one of the producers decided to watch a musical called Merrily we roll along starring Chip Zien and asked him if he's interested in being in this movie, telling him he sounds like a duck. which is probably not exactly what you want to hear after performing in a musical but he took the role anyways.
and btw despite everything regarding the production, everyone involved really expected this to be a hit and then it just.. wasn't. like at all. like it's one of the most notorious flop movies today for all the wrong reasons. like there's a lot of valid criticisms one could make about the plot and stuff but I think people just choose to focus on the interspecies part a lot which is upsetting to me. but yeah most of the actors went on to just straight up deny they were in this movie. not Chip and Lea though, they own it proudly which makes me happy
i could also rant a lot more about later Howard adaptations because there's even more insane lore there but i think this is already long enough for now, I'll maybe get back to that later

More Reasons to Leave "X"
You may not be aware of this, but X has decided to opt everyone into using their posts to train its AI, Grok. There are a couple of things you can do about it:
Commit to "doctors recommend you eat a small rock once a week" or "Spiders Georg"-level parody commentary. If you make your name or bio say something like "I'm committed to balderdash", I don't imagine they'd ban you, and even if they did, good riddance (to them), right?
If you're on Desktop/Laptop (this doesn't work on mobile yet, gee I wonder why), go to Settings > Settings and Privacy > Privacy and Safety and scroll down to the "Data sharing and personalization" section. There is a section of settings for Grok: you'll need to opt out and, if you like, delete your "conversation" history with Grok (assuming that you trust that they have any safety & privacy staff at X left to actually make sure this works, which I don't personally assume, but set it anyway).

I know Nightwing is sexy (nice body, especially nice ass) but why is he your #1 Hero?
That’s actually a good question. It really made me think for a bit.
I guess there’s a lot of things that led to me settling on Dick Grayson, but ultimately I really like his sense of responsibility and justice that he got from being raised by Batman and looking up to Superman. He has a lot of history, relationships with a lot of fun characters, and he even got to be Batman. He’s been a sidekick, a leader, and a solo act. He’s a really flexible character (figuratively and literally), so you get to see lots of types of stories with him. He even recently got superpowers temporarily and before he lost them, he went to Superman to be like “Look, I’m like you now!” and they spent a really heartfelt moment where Superman showed him a view of Earth that only someone with powers like him could see. It was really cathartic seeing Dick finally get to live like his childhood hero for a little. I really like stories like that. When a writer knows how to write Dick Grayson/ Nightwing, they really write him well.
I used to be a fan of Marvel comics. My father is a Marvel fan, so when I began my foray into comics, I started with those. I would jump around reading different series. I liked Spider-Man, the X-Men, Hulk, the concept of the Sentry (mainly The Age of the Sentry miniseries that parodies silver age comics; a lot of his other stuff was a bit too edgy), and Deadpool, but I realized I wasn’t really into the Marvel universe as a whole. I read comics that focused on the world like Civil War and Secret Wars, but I never got as into all of it.
As I thought about which books I’d read next, I realized I really liked the DC universe from the video games I’d play. Especially Batman. I started getting really into learning about Batman, his allies, his villains, his iconic comic runs. In particular, I learned more about Nightwing. I had been a fan of the Teen Titans cartoon as a kid, but I still always figured that outside of that Robin was just a one-dimensional goofy sidekick.
My father told me he had an omnibus of the New Teen Titans series by Marv Wolfman and George Perez, so I started reading that and I realized just how fun of a character Robin actually was to read about. I read Chuck Dixon’s Nightwing series too and I realized that he was really what I was looking for in a hero. He had been around since 1940, so there was a lot of history to pull from. He was connected to Batman, a character everyone loves, so he reaps the benefits of being able to regularly interact with the multifaceted characters that appear in Batman stories. He lead the Teen Titans, so we also got to see him in a leadership role and it allowed him to be defined by something outside of Batman too.
Honestly, one of the things that endeared me to him the most early one was his name, “Nightwing.” Those less savvy with the history of DC comics might assume that name is derived from Batman, as Batman is named after a winged creature of the night. His name actually comes from Superman. When Superman and Jimmy Olsen were shrunken by Braniac and stuck in the miniature Kryptonian city of Kandor, Superman lost his powers and took up the new mantle of the hero “Nightwing” with Jimmy Olsen as his sidekick “Firebird” (Nightwing and Firebird being Kryptonian gods). Like I said, despite being raised by Batman, Superman is Dick’s favorite hero, so when he wanted to discard the name of “Robin,” he chose a name inspired by his idol. Honestly, Marv Wolfman is a genius for that. Wolfman really redefined the character of Dick Grayson and it’s because of him that Nightwing is my favorite.
There was also that time right before the New 52 happened where Nightwing became Batman. When Bane broke Batman’a back in Knightfall, Bruce honored Azrael with taking up the mantle of “Batman.” Dick became really jealous and insecure of that decision. Having been with Batman longer than anyone else as the first Robin, he figured he deserved the right to be Batman. Years later when Batman died, Dick decided for himself that he would be the new Batman, with Bruce’s son Damian as his Robin. It was a really interesting inspection of Dick’s character. He was really unsure of himself being Batman. But Dick is also a character who cracks jokes when fighting crime, so we also got a very different take on Batman than what was the norm for the time. One who was more lighthearted. There’s just a lot you can do with his history with Batman.
Idk, Batman and Superman are my other two favorite heroes, so it’s just really great following a character who’s inspired by both of them. He’s like the perfect outcome of what you get when you mix Batman’s stealth and detection with Superman’s charisma and sense of justice.
Also, he’s hot.

- They head out. Tommy hasn’t been back there since that day.
- Tommy asks if Ranboo would do anything to him. Ranboo says no, he has no reason to.
- They make it to the portal and enter. They see Henry still there. When Tommy first saw Henry on the day, he thought Dream was lying. But now he knows that the revive book is a thing. Had Dream already used the revive book on Henry?
- They wonder how to get Henry home safely.
- They start leading Henry up the stairs of the Vault incredibly carefully.
- Henry dies again on the surface. Tommy mourns.

- Ranboo finds a Drip Llama and adopts it
- Puffy, Bad and Quackity chat. Puffy puts on a cursed rabbit skin
- Bad tells Puffy the tale of Roberto
- Bad suggests they prank Punz with murder and putting his stuff in a chest with lava

- A fight breaks out and Puffy combat logs. Eventually, Punz agrees to a truce as long as they don’t try to take his shoes again.
- Bad chats with George and Dream and shows them Puffy’s prank on the Egg. He notices that there seem to be a lot less of the Blood Vines around recently.
- They talk some more.
- Bad starts trying to out-British George.
- They talk some more. Bad attempts to Joe Mama them. It doesn’t work.
- They mention that the one-year anniversary of George streaming and also the Dream SMP is coming up on April 24/25th. George jokes about what he could do to celebrate, but Dream mentions there is something special happening that day that he doesn’t want to spoil.
- They reminisce about day one, George’s first stream, and Dream’s first stream
- Bad sings a parody of “Roadtrip” about George not being British and actually being from Florida or possibly France

Why Naqib in The Boys sucked
Image description: fictional character Naqib in Amazon Prime’s show The Boys.
(Is the fire in the background an excuse to use racist Yellow Filter to show how exotic he is? Hmm.)
I first posted this on my blog in Dec 2020, and since nothing in superhero media has changed for the better at this time (September 5th, 2021), I’m going to keep talking about it.
Because nobody else does. So, without further ado:
WHY NAQIB SUCKS.
I was a big fan of The Boys season 1; I love superheroes, I love deconstructing a genre. Sure, it has its problems, but overall I enjoyed season 1 and thought the show had potential.
(That’ll learn me for being hopeful!)
When season 1 ended with this big build up of mostly nameless brown and background characters as Muslim terrorists (deep sigh) we the audience are left thinking this one Muslim character (Naqib) whose superpower is to blow himself up repeatedly (insert another long deep sigh here) is going to be The Big Bad of season 2.
I had my misgivings about that direction. Firstly, as you can see from the image of Naqib, he is highly exoticised and is walking around bare chested with Arabic writing on his chest. He looks more like a generic western media depiction of a genie than he does a supervillain.
And yet he's the first prominent Muslim character in superhero media I've seen in YEARS.
-
(See my post about MENA and Muslim character good guys, including Joe played by Marwan Kenzari in The Old Guard, which is technically a comic book movie but it’s not what I’d call ‘caped and costumed’ superheroes so it’s more... superhero adjacent.)
I follow superhero content closely and as far as I'm aware the last time we saw any named Muslim characters in superhero movies WITH SPEAKING LINES was:
Instance 1) Iron Man 1 back in 2008 with The Ten Rings in Afghanistan, showing multiple Muslim characters as baddies/terrorists, but only two of them as a named character and with any meaningful lines to say. And despite one of them, Yinsen (actor Shaun Toub), being a good guy he still dies! Which is common in western media for Muslim and MENA characters.
Note: Fellow Iron Man 1 castmate, actor Sayed Badreya, makes an important point in this GQ article: "I die in Iron Man, I die in Executive Decision. I get shot by everyone. George Clooney kills me in Three Kings. Arnold blows me up in True Lies…" (x)
Instance 2) A more recent instalment in Batman V. Superman in 2016, with some unnamed 'General' character and mercenaries/terrorists in Nairomi, Africa, referred to only as "the desert" throughout the movie. All reference to the General's actual name are available in an extended/deleted scene only, so a very poor and vague depiction in the final cut.
Instance 3) The generic and badly written ‘bad guys’ in Wonder Woman 1984 (2020 movie), which was honestly such a racist depiction of Arabs and Muslims that many critics pointed out we hadn’t seen a depiction this terrible since 1994′s True Lies. (At least most critics were in agreement that WW84 movie was generally terrible, so there’s that.)
And that's it, those are the only major instances showing any Muslim actors or characters in a caped and costumed superhero movie.
Some other fleeting glimpses of Muslims onscreen:
Glimpse 1) I spotted a girl wearing a hijab among the nameless and unspeaking background characters of Peter Parker's class in Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). A first for Marvel movies, apparently.
Glimpse 2) Disney Plus show Falcon and Winter Soldier (2021) had two nameless Muslim characters walk by in a scene that’s supposed to be Tunisia (using Yellow Filter), and ‘thank’ the present American Air Force (eye-roll).
Glimpse 3) Netflix show Jupiter’s Legacy (2021) had a nameless Muslim sailor conversing with one of the main characters in a scene, with meaningful dialogue about racism. (WOW. Really good.) Bonus: no yellow filter. It’s a pity he’s a nameless background character because this brief instance is the least problematic MENA rep I’ve seen in ages, but it is very brief.
I just wrote about Glimpses 2 and 3, and how the Netflix show outdid Disney when it comes to these nameless walk-on Muslim characters.
This is pretty pathetic overall, these small crumbs, especially compared to better rep and probably the only instance of legit MENA superheroes in a ‘costumes and capes’ style superhero show, the Tarazi siblings on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
-
Anyway, now I’ve listed what crumbs are available across the live action superhero genre, back to The Boys.
I was intrigued about how season 2 would handle Naqib and any characters relating to him, and what storyline they'd use.
Was I excited at the possibility of seeing Muslim supers onscreen? Damn straight I was. Did I mind that they were baddies? Well, yes and no. When you only ever get crumbs or no crumbs at all, you tend to get excited over one stale old crumb.
After the build up for season 2, I eagerly sat down to watch the first episode, only to have the first five minutes of episode 1 Trigon him.
Note: who's Trigon, you ask? Well if you didn't watch the DCEU's Titans show, Trigon was The Big Bad who was hyped up throughout season 1, introduced in the season 1 cliff-hanger episode as this big 'oh shit!' moment for the cast of heroes, only for him to fizzle out like a wet fart in the first episode of season 2 while the show pivots wildly in another direction.
Exactly what happened to Naqib in the first five minutes of The Boys season 2.
Erm, so, Naqib. Farewell, I guess? As a character you briefly appeared in 2 episodes, portrayed by a different actor in each (Krishan Dutt, and Samer Salem). It seems the writers used you as a plot device when they needed a cheap cliff-hanger for a direction that ultimately went nowhere.
Am I disappointed? Yeah, I am. Overall I thought season 2 of The Boys was weaker than season 1, but I'm not here to talk about the whole season: I want to talk about Naqib and this missed opportunity.
The Boys and its showrunners sell the show as being a satire of recent and well known superhero content, of all the big movies and TV shows. There's been a lot of patting themselves on the back for calling out overused tropes in superhero media (and sometimes they've done this satire well: see the LGBT marketing scene with Queen Maeve in season 2), but my issue with the show on their Muslim rep, or should I say lack thereof, is if your show has even less Muslim character rep than the content you're trying to parody, how is this a win for satire?
Naqib and that whole angle came across as a lazy, half-assed swing from the writer's room. Sure, perhaps a lot of the non-Muslim and non-MENA audience won't even notice, as we've been ignored by western media or made into nameless, generic, vacuous baddies for decades now. Non-Muslims and non-MENA just accept that we're always the baddies for no particular reason at all (which feeds into Islamophobia, by the way) and The Boys' writers could say they are simply satirising the tropes already present in media...
But, and this is a big but, the media that The Boys is satirising has already made a step toward better inclusion and representation: Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan), Marvel comics' first Muslim superhero, is entering the MCU as a lead character in her own Disney Plus show, debuting in 2022.
Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan is also cited to appear in upcoming Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels (2022), which will be a major movie.
The MCU has also cast a Muslim actor (Mahershala Ali) as the lead in a reboot of Blade. That's going to be big news when it starts filming.
So to the showrunners on The Boys, I say this: now you've done this small angle of 'all Muslim characters are terrorists, yuckity-yuck!' like we've seen in major superhero movies thus far, and you've brushed that aside in favor of focusing on other whiter villains, my question is will you come back to Muslim and MENA characters again? Or is that all you got?
Because if that was ALL, then the current score is Disney/MCU:02, Netflix:02, DCEU:02, and The Boys: a big ZERO as far as Muslim and MENA rep goes.
-
Originally posted on my blog, magnificently nerdy.
If you, like me, are always on the lookout for onscreen Muslim and MENA characters in superhero media, and have spotted any characters in superhero TV shows I haven’t watched yet, let me know about them!
Here is my post on good guys, featuring Old Guard’s Joe, and Blindspot’s Rich Dotcom.
Here’s my post about the Tarazi siblings on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow TV show.
And, if Marvels’ Eternals gets released on schedule for 2021, we will have a MENA actor portraying a supporting character. I just hope Marvel gives him a name.

Let’s Talk #TheCasagrandes: Season 1 Final Thoughts
The first season of The Casagrandes was notably the first to finish airing a complete season on Nickelodeon since Harvey Beaks in 2016.
It did a great job of standing out from its parent show with unique stories which could only be presented with its own semi-distinct characters.
For my final thoughts on Season 1 of The Casagrandes, feel free to keep reading. There will be spoilers.
The series technically began airing over on The Loud House. The first nine episodes of that show’s fourth season had an arc which reintroduced the family, reestablished the city of Great Lakes, and introduced characters exclusive to the spin-off. With that in mind, the show begins with the assumption viewers have seen those episodes.
Unlike the first season of its predecessor, the spin-off does not shoehorn Ronnie Anne into every single episode’s story. There are several episodes where she either plays a supporting role or does not appear at all.
Nearly every single main character either had an episode of their own or were paired alongside Ronnie Anne. They helped show how characters who shared similar traits with certain Loud House characters were not exact copies. Carlota, for example, may be into fashion like Leni but is far more active on social media.
When it came to crossovers with The Loud House, it limited itself to occasional appearances. The show thankfully avoided lazily shoehorning them in, such as having Luan visiting the family on April Fools Day for a prank. It did not need them to lift up the show and take away attention from the main characters.
As for continuity, the season took place around both Seasons 4 and 5 of The Loud House. The best indicator of this comes from Lori. In an early episode, Bobby picks her up in Royal Woods. By the season finale, she is now living at Fairway by mentioning to Bobby about going home for the weekend. The show has yet to endure a similar change in the status quo, although it may depend on what happens over on its parent series.
When it comes to the episodes, the best ones were those which highlighted Mexican culture.
Croaked: It does a great job of explaining Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) by Sid and her sister Adelaide learning about the holiday, with the latter’s misunderstanding of it driving the plot. The episode was notably written by Lalo Alcaraz, who previously worked as a consultant on Disney/Pixar’s Coco (which also centers around the holiday).
The Horror-Scope: The first episode to have an appearance by a Loud House character, it reaffirmed Ronnie Anne’s friendship with Lincoln (much to the possible dislike by certain fans). It also featured the debut of Ernesto Estrella (George Lopez), a parody of the late TV astrologer Walter Mercado who passed away a week before the episode’s first airing.
Operation Dad: The show’s first half-hour episode featured the physical debut of Bobby and Ronnie Anne’s father Arturo (Eugenio Derbez). It also all but stated that their parents were divorced, something only implied by how he interacted with Maria and her father Hector.
Mexican Makeover: It presents a universal message about tradition and culture. It also surprisingly revealed, in a moment most viewers can relate with, that Ronnie Anne doesn’t know Spanish.
Uptown Funk: The first episode to not feature Ronnie Anne in any form allows the show to highlight Carl and Adelaide in a fun story which also established a friendship between the characters.
On the other hand, there have also been several bad episodes, some of which can best be described as rejected Loud House scripts.
Arr in the Family: This was frankly boring and forgettable. One could easily swap out the family with Lincoln and either his friends or family and nothing would change.
Team Effort: There were oddly two episodes this season centering around school clubs, this and “The Two of Clubs”, the latter coming across as a rough draft of the former.
Karma Chameleon: It blatantly recycles The Loud House episode “Along Came a Spider” with the only major differences being the animal and location.
New Roomie: Basically a wackier version of The Loud House episode “House Flip” but with a slightly better ending. Unlike the last two episodes, which at least aired a few years apart, these episodes aired exactly four months apart.
What’s Love Gato Do With It?: A cliché hypnosis story that reeks of bad fan fiction.
The show’s second season has already begun, with two episodes airing a month before the first season finale. It will hopefully continue to present more stories and adventures which can’t be done with the Louds as well as show viewers more about Mexico’s rich culture and traditions. The upcoming Christmas special is a good example of the latter by highlighting Nochebuena, the Latin American version of Christmas Eve.
Until next time, thank you for reading!

Marvel’s Avengers Game: Who is MODOK?
https://ift.tt/2ZbfwgZ
When you want to tell a big, epic Avengers story for your big, epic Avengers video game, you have to choose your big bad carefully. At this point, Red Skull, Loki, Ultron, and Thanos are old news. The Marvel Cinematic Universe covered them. Galactus is a bit too big a threat for the first of what Square Enix and Marvel likely hopes will be a whole series of games. Kang the Conqueror hasn’t appeared in the movies, but do you really want your first game to be bogged down by time travel nonsense? Dr. Doom is a little too attached to the Fantastic Four.
Fortunately, Square Enix has finally revealed the main villain for Marvel’s Avengers and it’s a great choice. Taking on the likes of Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, and Ms. Marvel is none other than MODOK, the Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing.
MODOK is the perfect mix of a villain who is recognizable and threatening, but also one who hasn’t made an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For good reason, but I’ll get to that in a second.
In the meantime, here’s the trailer where we get some story snippets and see George Tarleton’s gradual transformation from mad scientist to malevolent giant head:
MODOK is a Jack Kirby/Stan Lee original from all the way back in 1967, first appearing in full in Tales of Suspense #94 (he had a teaser cameo in the previous issue, as was the fashion at the time). George Tarleton was a member of Advanced Idea Mechanics, otherwise known as the bad guy organization from Iron Man 3 and the main faction of villains in Marvel’s Avengers. AIM was obsessed with science experiments where the ends justified the means, and upon creating a Cosmic Cube, they used Tarleton as a guinea pig to build some kind of evolved genius being from the Cube’s energies.
And so, MODOK was born. A giant head with a giant brain inside, but normal-sized limbs. A horrific sight with excessive smarts and psionic powers. Naturally, the elephant-sized brain man took over the whole outfit.
Initially, he was a different type of anti-Captain America. He was to brains what Cap was to awn, but was a terrifying mutation instead of the ultimate male model.
While MODOK started off as a Captain America villain, he soon became enemies with pretty much any hero that got in his way – as well as AIM itself sometimes. He took on the Hulk, Iron Man, the Carol Danvers version of Ms. Marvel, Alpha Flight, and so on. He was one of Marvel’s leading mad scientist characters who could be plugged into whatever story and appear threatening to even the newest reader because of his unique appearance. In Spider-Gwen’s alternate reality, MODOK is a giant Donald Trump lookalike called MODAAK (Mental Organism Designed As America’s King).
Yuge head. Very bigly.
While MODOK’s never carried his own solo series, he did have a very entertaining villain-based heist miniseries back in 2007 called Super-Villain Team-Up: MODOK’s 11. He’s also getting his own Hulu animated series soon and he’ll be voiced by Patton Oswalt in a comedy about being an unemployed suburban father with a mid-life crisis.

How Marvel’s Avengers and Spider-Man Are Shaping the Superhero Games of Tomorrow
By Bernard Boo
MODOK has appeared in countless cartoons and video games, including as a playable fighter in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, where his ultimate plan was to steal and wear Galactus’ helmet. On the cult-favorite animated series Megas XLR, the legendary Bruce Campbell played a MODOK parody named Magnanimous. The Marvel area at Universal’s Islands of Adventure features a giant cutout image of MODOK getting smacked upside the head with Cap’s shield, leading tourists to wonder, “What the hell is that supposed to be?”
So if MODOK is such a big deal, why hasn’t he been in the movies? I suppose, in the end, MODOK is the Aquaman of Marvel. I don’t mean in the thematic counterpart sense (that would be Namor the Sub-Mariner, obviously). It’s just that despite being a classic fixture of comics loved by many fans, casual audiences and people who don’t follow comics might find his design a bit silly. Perfect for animation, but in live-action, a giant head with tiny arms and legs is a really hard sell.
Luckily, we’ve reached Marvel Phase 4 and people are a bit more open to high-concept, weirdo comic characters. Aquaman made all the money in the world by “making him sexy and likable.” Well, I can’t imagine we’re going to get a sexy MODOK (though I did just type that into Google Image Search out of morbid curiosity). It’ll take some effort to make MODOK look formidable and not hilarious or look like pure nightmare fuel for the kids.
What it seems we’re going to get in Marvel’s Avengers seems like a good start. When treated as serious, MODOK can be seen as the ultimate threat: giant brain with giant brain lasers. Considering AIM is supposed to have ties to the upcoming Black Widow movie, perhaps MODOK’s big video game final boss role could be a stepping stone towards doing him right on the big screen.
Marvel’s Avengers launches on Sept. 4 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia. The game is also coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X this holiday.

SO
In 1978, a movie was released called “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes” which was your average run of the mill 70s “Nature/science gone mad” type of movie with a very stupid premise taking itself WAY too seriously (see also “Night of the Lepus” about killer bunny rabbits) although it WAS trying to be a dark comedy, it was just a little too grounded in reality to really pull it off. It was.... well it was an absolutely fucking awful movie
But it was made for like $10 000 and DID make a profit and was seen as a cult film.
so of course 10 years later in 1988 they made a sequel and just went “FUCK IT!!!” and unleashed THIS monstrosity onto the world. And it is glorious.
Watch the trailer above. It’s like a PARODY trailer for a fake movie you’d see on SNL or something. But no. This is exactly what the movie is like.
The main love interest girl is indeed a mutant tomato grown to look like a sexy woman, and the evil scientist sent her to have sex with as many men to spawn more killer mutant tomatoes, in this sequel where after the events of the first film, tomatoes have now been made illegal. The one weakness of these killer tomatoes is hearing music. As a result, main sexy girl listens to the “Farmers Almanac” radio all day,
The two films mentioned in the trailer;
“It’s got more laughs than “Out of Africa”“
“Out of Africa’ was a 1985 romantic drama which won 7 oscars. ....it’s not a comedy.
“It’s gayer than ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’“
‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ is a 1985 Brazilian/American drama bordering on an art film. IMDB summarizes it as: “Luis Molina and Valentin Arregui are cell mates in a South American prison. Luis, a trans individual, is found guilty of immoral behavior and Valentin is a political prisoner. To escape reality Luis invents romantic movies, while Valentin tries to keep his mind on the situation he's in. During the time they spend together, the two men come to understand and respect one another.”
I have not seen it myself but I remember being told it caused a stir when it was released for its themes.
Anyway, Return of the Killer Tomatoes also features a very young George Clooney
(this is an actual screenshot from the movie where they try and pack in as many product placement as the possibly can in a single scene. Clooney is the child on the right)
Anyway. This movie is SUPER 80s and doesn’t give a single fuck and I DEFINITELY recommend it if you don’t mind some not very PC jokes. But the movie as a whole doesn’t give a single shit about anything including itself.
I recommend finding the movie legit because it’s super cheap (I got mine as a double printed DVD along with High School Massacre for like $7)
but you know..... there’s also this.....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGypsZPGt4Y&t
#80s#video#Return of the Killer Tomatoes#the ''together with a yuppie pervert'' line cracks me the fuck up every single time#Please watch this movie#it makes me lose my fucking mind every single time#It's so fucking stupid and I love it#I mean the very first song in the movie is called ''big breasted girls go to the beach and take their tops off''#ffs send help I'm dying

The Avengers vs. Game of Thrones; an All-Star Game
We are going to let the dust settle in the over packed weekend between the release of Marvel’s End Game and HBO’s Game of Thrones. The worst thing that you can look up on the internet is any spoilers your horrible friends or coworkers can have already bragged about seeing both this weekend. Instead of making another post of, “This is what you missed this weekend...” I am going to do something a little more fun...at least from my point of view.
Since both storylines are ending, I feel like there needs to be a championed crowned in which franchise is better. Now every nerd that I know (including me being one of them) would simply pin them against each other in combat to see who would win in battle. The only unfortunate circumstance that entails is having fantasy realm versus the over whelming edge of anyone who has superpowers. Instead of giving out heroes a humbling death, I’d rather have them square off against each other in a “fantasy baseball” game to see which team is considered more worthy of being the best.
***Note to reader: I do not own any of the following characters in the writing of this blog. All characters belong to the property of Marvel Comics, the Home Broadcasting Network, and George R.R. Martin. Everything in this post is written completely in parody for entertaining purposes and all rights are reserved. The following lineups are the position players of each of the following teams:
Team Avengers:
C- Captain America: The leader of the Avengers will take the best position where he can call all the shots, behind home plate. Playing the backstop will make sure no one would run on the First Avenger as he feeds a laser to any one of his teammates if they are stealing. Cap has mentioned before that he was a fan of the New York Yankees; consider him a more lethal Yogi Berra, but with the true American spirit of the other “Captain,” Jason Varitek.
1B- Hulk: The strongest Avenger will deliver a great deal of power being the first baseman for the Avengers. A towering command of strength will be a guaranteed home run at the plate...as long as he not going ballistic in rage if ends up striking out instead. Consider this dude putting the Big Hurt on you, Frank Thomas style.
2B- Black Panther: the King of Wakanda will be one of the quickest infielders whether he is playing the shift or conducting a double play to any of the Avenger-basemen. The highly skilled king will also be a playmaker every time he goes to bat for the team, a guaranteed hit to make sure he gets on base. Let us not forget, for all you movie nerds that the actor who played T’Challa also played Jackie Robinson in a stand-alone biopic.
3B- Thor: The other ruler on this ball diamond who will deliver some great power behind the plate using Mjoliner. The first to third connection to Hulk is the only other Avenger who is capable of catching a fast throw from the God of Thunder. If you ever imagined what Chipper Jones would look like with long hair and a beard, he definitely would be the best representation of the Asgardian.
SS- Ant Man: I could not help myself putting a hero who can shrink down to a position that is a good play on words. As funny as that sounds, that superpower would come in handy being able to grow to a giant in order to snag a line drive that would not end up reaching the gap to the outfield. As crafty as Scott Lang would be, he also developed some “magic tricks” while not wearing the infamous suit; did you know that Javier Baez’s nickname for his tricks is “El Mago”?
LF- Dr. Strange: The legitimate Sorcerer Supreme will be the real magician on the field displaying his talents in left field. The biggest piece of this defense will make plays from anywhere and everywhere on the field. Nothing will leave the yard and Dr. Strange will make sure almost every time that no base runner from the opposite team will advance, even if it is to home plate. Consider Dr. Strange the best left fielder in the game, right there next to the legend himself: Ted Williams.
CF- Iron Man: The man who is in line exactly with Captain America with guarding the diameter of the ballpark; Iron Man. Tony Stark will be orchestrating all the patterns in the outfield and making sure not a single ball will leave the field. With the entire arsenal in his suit, Iron Man can put the ball anywhere into play from on base single to a grand slam home run. There is only one true “Iron Man” playing center field on the field right now, and his name is Mike Trout.
RF- Spider-Man: Who would have ever thought that nerdy Peter Parker would be stuck in right field for the Avengers? The final asset to the outfield for this team makes them close enough to flawless on defense; there is no excuse for anything to go over the web-slinger’s head operating the right field foul post. The Queens native will do everything possible to demonstrate his best attempt at being a New York Met, perhaps channeling the athleticism of the greatest Met to play right field; Ron Swoboda.
Starting Pitcher- Hawkeye: You give Clint Barton, who has the best accuracy of all his teammates, the ball as the starting pitcher for the Avengers and he is nailing the ball in the strike zone every pitch of the game. Hawkeye has heat, skill, and durability in order to paint the corners of the batter’s box as his own personal target. As much versatility this mighty hero has, Hawkeye will gather as many strikeouts as Nolan Ryan trying to pitch a winning game for the Avengers.
Team Game of Thrones:
C- Sandor “The Hound” Clegane: Had Hodor still be alive this far into the series, he most likely would make as good as a back stop, but Clegane has more brute force and a better defensive mind set. Clegane is an aggressive fighter known all over Westeros, he will carry the same reputation while at the plate tearing up pitchers. As good as any swordsman, his power can drive in any runner on base to get the quick RBI. Give Clegane the best comparison to Mike Piazza; for being well known but never winning anything of true honor.
1B- Jamie Lannister: The “Kingslayer” will look to add new target to the two crowns he faces on the opposing end. Lannister also has an altered handicapped having an iron hand for his right hand, making him left-handed batter that could deliver power with some iron behind it. From the Young Lion to Iron Lion, Lannister will be a definite Silver Slugger with what he delivers offensively. Scrapping with some of the best adversaries, Lannister is a mighty competitor with the resume proving he is mighty fighter; close enough to the royalty on what Lou Gehrig shared in the game as a champion.
2B- Grey Worm: the Unsullied leader will make a fine slugger at second base for the team that represents the seven kingdoms. With his attacking style, his batting profile will have him as a threat every time he goes to bat for the Throne. His offense will reflect well with his defense, collecting as many double plays as the adversaries he will be facing. Seeking no mercy, Grey Worm’s lethal style will be the same as Craig Biggio.
3B- Tormund: The mighty Wildling will display some impressive hacking skill at the plate, trying to outperform not only his teammates, but also the ones he will face. Tormund will display an aggressive playing style on defense, being the last stand on the diamond preventing anyone that will attempt to score against the Throne. The wild personality of “Giant’s Bane” makes him a fan favorite to anyone watching him from the stands. Before he became an internet sensation, I had heavy beliefs that Justin Turner was a distant relative as a Wildling for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
SS- Tyrion Lannister: I thought I had my fill at the “short” jokes with the position assignment; however, I could not resist assigning this one to “the Imp” of House Lannister. The skillful Tyrion may not have anything to add on offense, but he will be even a bigger asset on defense in the infield. With his genius intellect, he will execute simple plays that demonstrate preventing runs from advancing on the bases. To fool his opponents, he will have the size of Jose Altuve, the mechanics like Ozzie Smith, and the drinking capability of Wade Boggs.
LF- Daario Naharis: A crafty warrior representing the fighters of House Targaryen, Naharis will display amazing acrobatics in left field for the Throne. With Tormund being the entertainment of the roster, Naharis will be the heartthrob for the ladies in the stands. As much skill as he has as a fighter, he will deliver on base hits that will guarantee him to be a threat on the bags; this also includes the probability of stealing a great deal of bases being a stealth fighter as well. Daario Naharis has not shown his presence as of lately on the show, perhaps his skills are a legend as are the tales of Shoeless Joe Jackson.
CF- Gendry: As a bastard son of the last Baratheon King that sat on the Iron Throne, Gendry is a skilled swordsman that carries his own for the team for the Throne. A worthy batter, he has been trained and skilled in many houses in order to become one of the best threats at the plate. His skills are kept as a secret, in order to be known as a quiet threat at the plate. Gendry is a big team player and contributes to a great deal of assists on the field; you can compare him to a young Dexter Fowler.
RF- Euron Greyjoy: the raging pirate and king of House Greyjoy has a great deal pf power and strength to display at the plate. Euron is a force to reckon with being an offensive asset that is lethal and dangerous to be facing. With his brute force, he also holds a great defensive mind set holding down right field and a threat to anyone who tags on the bases. As a pirate, you can expect him to “loot” the bases as a quick threat, despite his brute stature. Euron Greyjoy may have the capability to play like Reggie Jackson.
Starting Pitcher- Jon Snow/Aegon Targaryen: The Lord Commander of the North will demonstrate all of his best mechanics at the mound. After being trained by House Stark and the Night’s Watch, he has the entire arsenal to deliver the best variety of pitches on the mound. After discovering that he is the true air to the Iron Throne being a Targaryen, it gave him that little extra special push to have some of the best heat to deliver to the strike zone. Torching pitches with lethal command makes Jon Snow comparable to Greg Maddux
Both rosters have talented line ups on both end of the field, however I feel like I’m going to get some criticism for the lack of variety from other key characters in the series. It is also important to understand that in baseball, you cannot win championships without spectacular pitching. The following key characters of both team are your all-star studded cast for their bullpens, respectfully:
Team Avengers Bullpen:
Relief Pitcher- Black Widow: The first call to the bullpen will be Hawkeye’s first partner in crime: Natasha Romanoff. Carrying on to what Barton has with accuracy, Black Widow is not too far off from what they share in target practice. Romanoff will do “whatever it takes” to get the job done and carry on the game to the next inning. Expect Black Widow’s relief style to be swift, like Aroldis Chapman.
Relief Pitcher- Scarlett Witch: The set up woman for the Avengers would be perfect putting the ball in Scarlett Witch’s hands. Her control of the ball is what is going to be essential in those dramatic moments when the game is at its highest peak. Scarlett Witch will be casting all types of spells delivered to the strike zone, leaving hitters in a daze and possibly confused. With the amount of pitches she will deliver, you can compare Scarlett Witch to Josh Hader.
Closer- Captain Marvel: In the period where the game will be at its climax, if the Avengers are in trouble or ahead, they will look to Carol Danvers for the save. Captain Marvel delivers the best presence on the mound for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, as she will be dialed in ninth inning. With her supernova strength, all of her pitches will be close to untouchable, it will be close to near impossible to get a single hit off of her. With the filthiest stuff in the bullpen, Captain Marvel models her pitching style as Trevor Hoffman did in most closing scenarios.
Team Game of Thrones Bullpen:
Relief Pitcher- Brienne of Tarth: Brienne is fantastic substitute player than can play anywhere in the outfield as well as be a legitimate contact hitter for the Throne. What is even more special in characteristics of her mechanics is how well she stays on target. Brienne has the capability of being a relief pitcher in order to deliver success if the team is in need of aid. With her tall frame and power, she has the ability to command and pound the strike zone. Brienne may look like Billy Wagner on the mound if she gets the chance to relieve Snow in the game.
Relief Pitcher- Daenerys Targaryen: Enter the “Mother of Dragons” herself; Daenerys is the perfect set up woman if the Throne baseball team has a commanding lead. With the power influence of a dragon, she can torch the strike zone without fail and delivers her signature strikeout of each batter: DraKarys! Dany has the pitching mechanics like Craig Kimbrel and could possibly give him a run for his money as a better relief pitcher.
Closer- Arya Stark: Enter the secret assassin who has many faces. Arya Stark has proven to be one of the most dangerous assets (and in this case, teammates) on the side of the Iron Throne. With last night’s reveal, it should be known that she is not a force to reckon with in the deadly Game of Thrones. With her killer instinct on knowing how to dismantle players, she will have lights out stuff to throw from the mound. You can compare Arya to the likes of Mariano Rivera, because you will never see her coming and will not be fortunate to be left alive…in the batter’s box.
With this All Star cast facing each other in something that you would probably pay a great deal of money to see at Comic Con, who do you think would win this amazing baseball match up? I leave the result to be held in the world of imagination, but if this carries on as a thread, I would love to see how baseball fans would have this adaptation of fantasy baseball. We are more than fortunate for both of these franchises being a part of our lives over the past decade. With the influence of baseball, both of these team would be a great mash up to see play each other in a match for the ages.

The Marvel Parody - Chapter 4
Pairing (in the futur) : Chris Evans x Plus Size!Reader
Warnings : Language ; spelling mistakes ; getting political
Word Count : 1.265
Author’s Note : Some reactions of the cast (beginning of the chapter) were added after @prettybubblesintheair suggested it. :)
NAME CHANGES -> Peter Quill = Petra Quill ; Tony Stark = Tonya Stark ; Peter Parker = Petra Parker ; Dr.Steven Strange = Doctress Stephanie Weird ; Thanos = Anus…Hope you like it xD
Prelude Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
Change of scenery obliged, the show paused for 10min in order to put the landscape corresponding to the planet Titan. The small break allowed us to change into our next characters and the audience to relax a little.
« Omg, this is sooo good. I wasn’t expecting this », said Letitia.
« Right, I mean that « ghost app » part had me wheezing. I can’t », exclaimed Tom Holland with a heavy British accent.
« Why did they put me as a fucking stuffed eagle toy?! », said Mackie. Which led half of the cast to laugh loudly, especially Sebastian. « I mean, come on! », continued Mackie. « Ohh, don’t whine Choclatchino, you never looked better », voiced Sebastian. At that, Holland laughed and Mackie just gave him a stern look, which led the youngest of the cast to laugh even louder.
« I’m really impressed by the scenery and their outfits. The details are really on point. And let’s not forget how beautiful those girls are », remarked Brie Larson. « Right, I was thinking the same », the other female co-stars agreed.
« What about you Evans, you haven’t said much? », Hemsworth asked. Everyone turned to their castmate. « Oh, I love it so far. I’m really looking forward for the rest », he said with a wild grin.
« Is that so. Whyyy? Does it have to do with a certain Bucky impersonator??, implied RDJ. That comment got everyone to turn to the freshly 37-year old, smiling and hollering. « Ahh guys, stop. I’m enjoying it. It’s hilarious. The references are clever and whoever wrote this piece clearly knows what she’s talking about. And besides, that Captain girl really got my Cap mimics», affirmed Evans with a slightly nervous giggle.
« Dude, admit it. That Y/N caught your eye. You can’t deny it, we saw you looking at her even if she wasn’t the one speaking » - Pratt. « Arrgh fine. I admit. I was intrigued the minute she stepped on stage an hour ago », Evans admitted.
« Oh my little boy growing up so fast », told RDJ.
« Why aren’t we talking about the fact that they renamed me Anus? », stated Josh Brolin playfully.
Everyone laughed at that. Clearly, everybody was enjoying their evening.
The lights were dimmed which indicated that the show was continuing. The stage arbored some wrecked car pieces that we painted in orange nuances to give that Titan planet vibe. For this part, the characters on stage were Sarah as Petra Quill , Kelly as Tonya Stark , Emily as Mantis , July as Drax (invisible) so she will play Anus , Jen as Petra Parker and you as Doctress Stephanie Weird.
Stark, Weird and our disguised Spider were ambushed by the Guardians.
« Who are you? Where is Gamora? », asked Petra Quill
« Ehm, I’ll do one better : Who is Gamora? » - Tonya
« No I’ll do one even better : HOW is Gamora? » - the voice of Drax resonated.
« Where does that voice come from », you asked confused.
« I’m the Destroyer Drax. Because I destroy things and then I tell them my name », the voice responded. « I’m also invisible, when I’m quiet ».
You were looking at your fellow earthlings for help and they seemed as lost as you.
« To whom you respond to?, asked Tonya
« Wakanda question is that? What am I supposed to say : Beyoncé? », Quill interjected.
The audience was cracking up and that gave the team and especially you a relieving feeling. They were liking it.
Mantis touched Parker and declared « Oh boy, you don’t feel so good ». « How do you know? »… « Well maybe if you haven’t drank all those juice boxes as I told you not to, you wouldn’t feel so bad », announced Tonya. « Sorry mom », answered Parker.
Once they established that they all had the same goal - kill Anus, they assembled in order to make a plan.
« That plan is terrible. Just like your make-up, you should check that », Quill said to Tonya, who gave him an annoying look in return.
Meanwhile they were figuring out what to do, you were seated on a rock, legs crossed and playing with your enormous eye necklace. Putting in front of your face pretending to be Big Brother watching everyone and grinning. Until you were caught by the characters and tried to look elsewhere and pretend doing tricks with your hands. While doing so you managed to pull out some orange frisbees (p.s. it’s supposed to be the magic coming out of Strange hands).
« Yup, we’ve got some Georges Meliès tricks up in here », you declared. ( Meliès was one of the first french film directors. He discovered by stopping the camera, he could create illusions, he’s basically the first one to invent special effects). Behind those frisbees was a small word saying that the person who caught it, would have a free drink at the bar.
« Can I throw them? », asked Parker.
« Sure, kid », you handed them over.
Stark and Quill were finishing their argument when Mantis declared « Miss Stark, is your friend alright? ». They all turned to you, shaking.
« Hey, what’s going on? »
« I was seeing the futur in order to calculate our chances of victory «
« What did you see? », asked Stark
« I saw that we’ve got 99 problems and that bitch is one », you announced.
« Weird », commented Drax
« No, Jay-Z », you replied.
« Ok, you’ve gotta stop those references. No more cultural references for you », Stark said angrily.
You frowned at him « I can’t help it, I’ve got loyalty, got royalty inside my DNA », you told him.
« Really, Lamar?! »
« What, I can’t just quote Jay-Z and ignore the master of poesy. That wouldn’t be fair », you replied.
« Touché », claimed Stark. « Fine, you may continue those puns ».
You gave him a smug smirk and winked.
Everyone got in position and you remained on stage with Tonya.
« Weird can I ask you something? - Tonya
« Yes », you replied.
« Well now that there’s only both of us, tell me why so many cinematic references? I mean there are a lot. You do are conscient that half of the audience don’t necessarily get them?», asked Tonya perplexed.
« You know, you can’t trick passion, you can’t fake it. That’s why I can’t hold back on them.
« What about all those puns? »
« What you Americans don’t like jokes? Odd, considering there’s one living in the White House right now », you exclaimed. You knew this part of the show could be tricky. Some ‘ooohs’ and ‘buurnnnn’ were heard in the audience along with hollering.
« You just went there. We don’t really do politics in this building », retorted Tonya.
« Don’t we? Are you sure? Because what we’re doing right now is Art. Those performances that we do is Art. Art is political ! Showing skin as a plus size female is political. Denouncing the inequalities in a dance is politic. It’s fighting the patriarchy. It’s fighting society standards about how as a female you should look like, how you should behave, how you should talk, how you should be sexually actif or not. And that’s what we do here. So yes, I think we do politics and we happen to use the strongest item as a tool : ART », you told.
During your speech, a few people stood up, clapped and cheered. Among them the female cast but also some of their male co-stars.
« Preach queen, preach », you heard Brie Larson yelling.
« I never saw it like that. But you’re right. » - Tonya
« Good talk Stark », you said smiling « And ohh… about the audience not understanding half the references, don’t underestimate them. (you looked at the public) They drink and then they know things ».
« Smooth Weird, smooth. I understood that reference »
At that double pun, you couldn’t help and grinned widely.

Wes Anderson's Movies, Ranked By Rotten Tomatoes | ScreenRant
Wes Anderson has one of the most distinctive voices in cinema today. It can be described (or even dismissed) as “quirky,” but it’s more than that. He has a strong grasp of symmetry when composing his scenes and framing his shots; he casts Bill Murray in even weirder roles than he usually plays; and he makes movies that, however strange-looking, focus on very real human relationships and how we handle various different emotions.
RELATED: Wes Anderson’s 10 Most Memorable Characters
Most of Anderson’s movies are acclaimed by critics, but some have been more universally adored than others. So, here are Wes Anderson’s Movies, Ranked By Rotten Tomatoes.
9 The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (56%)
Drawn from a screenplay written by Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou has a pretty large budget for an Anderson movie ($50 million), but it’s no less quirky. This is probably the reason for the fact that the movie failed at the box office. For any fan of Anderson’s, it’s business as usual.
Bill Murray stars as Steve Zissou, a parody of the famous French explorer Jacques Cousteau, as he heads out into the deep sea to get revenge against the jaguar shark that ate his partner. It’s a Wes Anderson-helmed take on a Moby Dick-type story.
8 The Darjeeling Limited (69%)
The Darjeeling Limited is easily Wes Anderson’s most underrated movie. This is probably due to its critical reception being weaker than most of his others. But it’s actually a very interesting movie, with some entertaining set pieces and character moments.
It has a simplistic premise, following three brothers on a train journey across India, but what the lack of real plot opens the movie up to do is explore the relationship between these brothers. It also gives the cinematographer, Robert Yeoman (Anderson’s long-time go-to guy), plenty of room to capture the beauty of India. The Darjeeling Limited is a road movie on one of the most spectacular roads in the world.
7 The Royal Tenenbaums (80%)
Arguably the movie that defines Wes Anderson’s career, The Royal Tenenbaums is the powerful story of a dysfunctional family; sort of like a Noah Baumbach movie with extra quirk. The ensemble cast – from Gene Hackman as the patriarch to Ben Stiller and Gwyneth Paltrow – is impeccable, anchored by voiceover narration by Alec Baldwin.

With its curiously inventive structure and compelling character dynamic, this may be Wes Anderson’s greatest script (co-written with Owen Wilson), while the use of music creates poignant moments like Luke Wilson’s attempted suicide scene set to Elliott Smith’s “Needle in the Hay.” The Royal Tenenbaums walks a tonal tightrope between comedy and tragedy deftly.
6 Bottle Rocket (85%)
Wes Anderson’s directorial debut Bottle Rocket wasn’t a huge hit at the box office, but it was praised by critics enough to launch his career, and Martin Scorsese would eventually call it one of his favorite movies of the ‘90s. It also launched the career of Owen Wilson, who co-wrote the script with Anderson and also made his film debut acting in it.
The crime genre and the comedy genre have rarely been balanced this well – Anderson takes joy in the simple interactions that people have, bringing a human element to a wild premise. Rotten Tomatoes calls it “Reservoir Dogs meets Breathless.”
5 Rushmore (89%)
Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson’s script for Rushmore is a fascinating three-hander focusing on the relationships shared by a disparate trio. Jason Schwartzman (in his debut role) plays Max, a quirky teenager; Bill Murray plays Herman, a wealthy industrialist; and Olivia Williams plays Rosemary, Max’s teacher.
The story becomes about a love triangle when Max and Herman both fall in love with Rosemary. As it turns out, she’s not interested in either of them and dates a doctor played by Luke Wilson instead, driving them both crazy with jealousy. Rushmore is so culturally significant, capturing a piece of the ‘90s, that it’s been preserved in the Library of Congress.
4 Isle of Dogs (90%)
Wes Anderson returned to his distinctive style of stop-motion animation last year to helm this unusual tale set in a dystopian Japan in the near future. While the movie was accused of cultural appropriation for its use of Japanese imagery and a mostly white cast, there’s no denying that this is a gorgeous work of big-screen animation.
It might not quite stack up with the rest of Anderson’s filmography, but it is an interesting addition to his overall body of work. Isle of Dogs was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, but it was beaten to the prize by the admittedly superior Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
3 The Grand Budapest Hotel (91%)
Wes Anderson was nominated for both Best Picture and Best Director at the Oscars for The Grand Budapest Hotel. The framing narrative sees Jude Law playing a writer who is documenting the wacky escapades of the staff and guests at the hotel, but it’s clear that Ralph Fiennes is the star here.
He plays Gustave H., the concierge, and the actor’s deadpan delivery style makes sure every line is laugh-out-loud hilarious. Tony Revolori (now best known for playing Flash in the MCU’s Spider-Man movies) also provides excellent support as his young sidekick, the lobby boy Zero. The Grand Budapest Hotel is quite possibly Anderson’s funniest movie.
2 Fantastic Mr. Fox (92%)
In a dream casting akin to Quentin Tarantino getting Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt in the same movie, Wes Anderson managed to pair up George Clooney and Meryl Streep in his animated adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl book Fantastic Mr. Fox.
RELATED: George Clooney's 10 Best Movies, According To Rotten Tomatoes
While it wasn’t as big a box office hit as a live-action movie starring Clooney and Streep would’ve been (or even an animated movie with a less quirky and more digestible style of animation), it was showered with praise by critics, and rightly so. The movie is as delightful and heartwarming and filled with starry-eyed innocence as its source material.
1 Moonrise Kingdom (93%)
This coming-of-age tale about kids attending a scouting camp does something interesting that few on-screen love stories do. It tells the parallel stories of a pair of bright-eyes tweens falling in love and an old married couple falling out of love, tackling the full spectrum of romance in a way that few romantic movies manage to do.
Anderson’s trademark use of symmetry in his cinematic composition is on point here, and his personal stamp can be spotted in every scene, line of dialogue, and character moment. This is the work of a filmmaker at the height of his powers, for better or for worse.

Dramaturgy Go Nowhere: Julie Shavers @ Edfringe 2017

From Black Rocking Chair Productions and critically acclaimed playwright Julie Shavers comes a brand new black comedy and a deliciously dark script for this year’s Fringe-goers.
Workshopped under the guidance of Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel at the esteemed Sewanee Writers Conference, Shavers’ new comedy satirizes the extreme competition and achievement-obsessed culture of Los Angeles. Lala Land isn’t all sunshine and rainbows; it’s surveillance by the neighbours, the police and the PTA. In a world where strangers snap cell phone videos of you for leaving your child in the car, or call the cops if your kid walks home alone from the playground, it can feel as if everyone is out to get you.
Mary Go Nowhere is an absurdist take on trying to get by as a parent in LA, where if the droughts, fires and earthquakes don’t get you, your fellow parents will. Mary’s 3 year old son curses, carries a gun and brings spiders to school. Trying to keep him enrolled and keep up with the Joneses has got Mary at her wit’s end. This is a story of one October in Los Angeles, where the weather and residents are hot and mean, and Mary is going nowhere.
What was the inspiration for this performance?
I was inspired by being new to Los Angeles. It's such a strange and varied place from the landscape to the people. Also the current social climate in the US is totally weird. Everyone is watching everyone else and cataloguing grievances along the way. There seems to be a lack of trust and camaraderie. Like everyone who is different is dangerous. And everyone is different.
Is performance still a good space for the public discussion of ideas?
Absolutely. My work is very personal. I write what I see. The little things that are ignorable in real life show up more clearly under the magnifying glass of theatre. I think this effect is greater when you experience it in a room full of people.
How did you become interested in making performance?
My parents were musicians and I began singing and dancing at a very young age. I wrote my first play when I was eight years old. It's what I've always done. Nothing moves me like live performance and I want to give that experience to others.
Does the show fit with your usual
productions?
My last several shows have been more spectacular, in that they have included a lot of music dance and multimedia. This play is more of a story. A very funny, dark and twisted story, but more about relationships than fanfare. Until the end at least.
What do you hope that the audience will experience?
I hope that the audience will laugh. Maybe that they'll recognize something that makes them feel their own humanity. Maybe they'll hate me. It's hard to know.
What strategies did you consider towards shaping this audience experience?
The cast is really important to this play. We have chosen people who understand comedy and can make it fun for the audience. We are also committed to creating a highly theatrical experience. Something different than you might see on screen.
This production reunites director Paul Urcioli and star Dan O’Brien, who return to the Fringe for the first time in 17 years following their 2000 Scotsman Fringe First winning, highly acclaimed production of Brian Park’s Americana Absurdum.
