Get a Load of Dis-Guise

Happy Hallo-week! Yeah, this contest is gonna be judged in November, and yeah, this is a US-centric time frame, but I'm the judge and I'm disguising this week as the one that the contest fits best with, so there.

So does this mean horror? Does this mean monsters? Does this mean demons, or zombies, or buff kissable werewolves? Unfortunately not. But, I think that there's something else associated with the season that we should take into consideration: the changing of the self, the identity of the you. That's right! Why not become anything you want, in life or otherwise? Why not dress up in that Liliana cosplay and haunt the local library? Why not cover yourself in spaghetti and claim to be Emrakul? Or, if you have neither the cleavage nor pasta for these options, perhaps design one that can fulfill some purpose similar...

Design a card that changes a creature's type.

Here are your M.E.O.W.s—

Mandatory: Creature type changing

The card has to change the type of one creature to another. How it happens, doesn't matter—aura, creature ETB, mass effect, etc. This is NOT animating into a creature type or creating a token. Your effect must either add or override a creature type. You don't have to change the name, you shouldn't be changing the card type, and let's stick with in-multiverse creature types for now (which means no UB-only types like Necron or Walker).

Encouraged: Flavorful/Specific typal changing

I want to really feel that the card is about the creature type, without as much regard what it may attach to. If you turn something into a Frog, what's froggy about it? If you're making an Elf aura, how can you really Elf it up? Focus on a type that you like, perhaps, or lean into the transformative side of things.

Optional: What's in a transformation?

I was thinking that you'd be changing your own creatures, but hey, transformation is a mixed bag sometimes. Interactions can be a real pain in the butt, so perhaps changing your own creatures is best for this contest to keep it lighthearted, but you never know what it means to change or be changed. Feel free to get a little weird with studying the effect you're interested in and how you can implement it.

Warning: Layers, effects, complications

Make sure that your card works first. There are a few...weird interactions that can happen. But, that's what the workshop is for in our Discord channel! Focus on a good card first, and then whatever happens afterwards can be tweaked. Always focus before going too wild.

Itachi: I made it. He seemed to like it. Anyway … *digs in his pocket and pulls out a ribbon* He won second place.

Kisame: Really? Whoa! Good boy, Samehada!

Konan: Second place is pretty impressive!

Deidara: Would have been first place if loud noises didn’t freak him out so easily …

Itachi: Mm. For the “talent” portion, Dei thought it’d a good to have him do tricks, like jumping and spinning, while Deidara lit off small timed explosions, but …

Deidara: But each time a bomb went off, he jumped on a spectator and drank their chakra to “calm down”, hm. He did this to eight people before they told us we could have this ribbon if we just left.

Itachi: But on the bright side … there was also a $50 cash prize! Who’s up for sweet cakes and tea?!

2023 costume contest

I'm not going to show all 27 entries in this post, but here were the winners.

People really do seem to like the cute, simple costumes, so Susan "La Shay" won 🥇 with her cactus. My mind immediately goes "but it's just a green sweater, some cut up pipe cleaners, a few fake flowers, and some brown fabric". However, I have to admit it's cute and clever. (Sorry, these images are from my computer screen.)

I got 2nd 🥈 with my Undertaker cosplay. It's extensive and expensive, and I freaking shaved 🪒 my eyebrows off, wore contacts all day, wore long coffin nails 💅 all morning, and kept a dog biscuit in my mouth much of my time out of my workspace to commit to the bit. I'm also wearing not just the cassock and mute robe but the cassock and two layers of mute robes! It was a cold day, but later (in the afternoon, after the parade), I removed some layers, as well as the wig and some accessories, like the nails 💅, lockets (hard to see in the photos here), and hat.

The person taking our photos was none other than Becky T., who lost to me that morning, when the pumpkin contest results were announced. She's not a professional photographer, but sheesh I feel like she used these photos as payback. 😆 Because she took that full-body pic standing on a chair, which makes me look shorter than I already am, and that's the pic she chooses out of the few full-body pics she took... and I actually growled at her 😂 through my dog biscuit when she flipped the rim of my hat up to get a closeup of my face w/ the contacts. My mouth was too occupied for me to explain she shouldn't flip his hat up like that....

3rd 🥉 went to Chris and Virginia, a married couple. Chris is on my Rad Chem team, and Virginia is our boss's boss's secretary. I never saw the movie The Warriors, but looking into it, I can tell they did a good job portraying rival gangsters.

The voting was online, just like with the pumpkins, but for whatever reason, you could vote for up to three costume entries. Some of the people voting for me said they also voted for Chris and Virginia.

The contest took place entirely on the 31st, and we got the results the following day.

We also had a chili cook off that day, and I didn't enter, but I was one of the official judges. We had two votes, as usual, for the chili contest: judges' choice and peer voting. First place 🥇 on both chili ballots went to Anna M., who is a team lead in Organic Chemistry. She also entered the costume contest, wearing an inflatable dinosaur costume, like this one I found online:

There was also an inflatable Pillsbury Dough Boy in the contest. Many of the people who dressed up participated in a parade through several floors of our laboratory, after I fulfilled my duties as a chili judge. I'll have to ask around for footage of the parade.... 🤔 😊

I might later download all the pics from the costume contest to post here... eventually. Oh, yeah! I forgot we got a group pic after the parade! Becky T. is the pickle/cucumber on the far right.

Local library is having a costume contest on Sunday. I’m trying to decide which costume to wear. There’s a prize for most esoteric, but the Freddy Krueger costume is recognizable. And yeah, I do plan to be masked. I mask as much as possible

Two-Faced Runners-up of the Halloween 2023 contest! ~

@horsecrash — Morphic Trickster

I'll be honest: there were two faerie-oriented cards in this pool, and I knew that one of them was gonna get up there and one of them was gonna also be praised, and I just think it's funny that we had two faerie transformation cards. Not surprised, but—well, to be honest, a little surprised. Let's take a look at this aspect! It's certainly a little more mean-spirited, but there's nothing wrong with some jerk faeries. The flavor text is spot-on for sure, and wow, Insects? That's a great choice.

The multikicker and the ability that comes from it is a great choice to really sink mana late-game or just make one problem creature a little pest, OR to give yourself some extra aerial advantage later when you gotta swing for it. The multikicker wording seemed odd at first but you used the right wording for that. With the changing part of it, Eccentric Apprentice says you can drop the "gain" off that ability. I think overall this is a fun, versatile card that plays into some mischievous aspects of its color/type that aren't super easy to capture. Unlike Steve, the Recently-TF'd Insect.

@real-aspen-hours — Amoeboid Gift

There are two main wording tweaks for this card. Firstly, I would make this an "as it enters" rather than "when," although I couldn't tell you precisely why. I suppose just for reaction's sake. Secondly, Arachnoform tells us that Embrace can be worded: "Enchanted creature gets +3/+3, has trample, and is every creature type." And also Reject should have "loses all creature types" after but whatever—those are some weird ones. The concept: solid. The card: really strong in limited and would probably be a bulk rare. The feeling: genuinely horrific.

I know that you wanted this to have the creature lose all abilities, and you know what, that would've made it a much stronger rare, but I want to focus on the strengths of this card. Besides being a slammin' good time for combat tricks and aggro Simic strategies, you nailed the art description and nailed something I wouldn't have thought about this card otherwise. I would've said that this was more of an actual-Simic card without knowing the thoughtless annexation of the amoeboid in question. I can see the gunk-drowned scream frozen on the soldier's face beneath the translucent body that is soon to become their body forever. It's grotesque and, like you said, deeply unsettling. Great show of transformation's complexities on a solid body of a card!

@snugz — Brazen Banner

Doesn't it feel good to go back to basics? This card's a pain in the butt and thank goodness it's not common. These days, you never know, but still. I think this card shows a little historicity and a return to Magic without being nostalgia-bait or pandering. Flagbearing is a pretty complex pseudo-mechanic as it stands. You gotta start somewhere, though, and the target is right there. The ability to block stuff implying that this thing sits back and takes the hits is kind of sad for it, actually. I feel bad for a creature that doesn't even exist yet.

And I would've liked to see more flavor here, honestly. Not necessarily flavor text, but: where do you imagine this card taking place? What do you see happening to this determined soldier? Are they proud to carry the banner? Does the banner stand unfurling in the wind? To be honest, I thought about the Tarkir banners, and a young warrior with their hands gripped around a pole so ancient that the wood is indented with other finger-marks of generations past. But it could be a makeshift rebel flag just as much, a hooligan's mark running through the city. What's it to you? What's the line between nobility and novelty? I'd like more of that—from every card that ever gets submitted, for sure, but here especially where the resonance feels just on the cusp.

Well, I competed, wholeheartedly, in my office's Halloween costume contest this year... and I lost.

This. I was Withered Chica. How did this lose? Against a girl in a black lolita dress with platforms and a white mask with blood tears? Against an OC??

So, any comfort scenarios you can link me to? Or, if you're bolder, could someone write my scenario?

(warning; a bit whiny, which I try not to do, sorry)

I'm known by most as being a sweet, reserved, and devout worker; but also with a reputation for going all-out on dress-up days. Especially for Halloween. 🎃 I have for years.

Like always, I stayed up late and worked for weeks on my costume; compiling clothes & props and painting into the midnight hours. Was hard work, but it's always worth it when I step into my building and everyone flinches. My colleagues said I was a shoo-in to win Scariest Costume. In the office & out in the parade, I walked robotically everywhere. I had a sound box tucked away so I could make her groans & jumpscare noises. And mind you, I live in Florida! ☀️ I did all this, without eating anything after a light breakfast, and barely sipping any water through my under-mask's mouth slots. (Yes I had a 2nd mask on, of Nightmare Chica, for its second row of teeth!) But I didn't complain about it. I relished in it~

It's a personal thrill of mine. Performing in costume, either using my hip-long hair or hiding it in a net, especially to scare. ^^ I scare because I care, lol. (Monsters Inc/University scenarios are great too)

This time, I thought I had it in the bag. For years, the judges wouldn't choose me because my costumes, while very scary to my coworkers, were too obscure for the judges. I thought, surely, Chica would be scary *and* recognizable. And some of them did know what I was from. But alas~ 💔

I went back to my office desk sad, tearing up behind my mask. No one in my office has ever seen me cry, and thanks to my double mask, no one would. Several of them gave me sympathies, which I appreciated, but I kept my thanks short. I'm the nice level-headed trainer, and yes, there have been close moments before, but they couldn't see me like this. It was foolish to cry, I know, but I was hurt, and I never make a fuss or ask for anything. I just wanted.. Thankfully, everyone was excused to leave work early if they wished. So, I took my time peeling off my costume in the restroom as most everyone left. To the few left behind, I tried to excuse my flushed face and shiny eyes on the 1pm high hot sun. I stuck around just a little more, to finish a job. A half hour later, I was the 2nd to last one out. Drove home, listening to my Toon Patrol & The Duke playlists. Once home, I got myself a poké dinner, chugged bottles of water, took a pill for my aching head, and retired for a nap. X3 Imagining comfort scenarios, and passed out in minutes.

So, after all that, if I could be linked to a comfort fic for my situation, 😌 it would be much appreciated. Yes, I'm feeling better, but it'd still be nice, ya know? 👏 And I do enjoy reading new x reader scenarios.

I went as Tenzin for Halloween this year! I've never really done True Cosplay before, this was the first costume I basically had made from scratch (my husband was a good sport and helped me with all the sewing). And I learned how to shave my head! That was new haha

I don't know what you have and haven't watched yet but his main show is KinnPorsche (which you can watch on IQIYI) his character Kim is only a side character though.

There are two series you can watch on youtube

Jeff was also on a Chinese survival show called Call Me By Fire S3 (can be found on youtube, there is english subtitles)

Music Videos/Jeffcest

Jeff has been making music for 10 years, (he used to use the names Jeff the Demo and Jeff Garden if you want to look up any of his earlier songs on youtube)

Due to his whole vibe (and specifically his music video for Ghost, which is actually a two part MV continued in his other song called Yellow Leaf)

People started shipping him with the characters he plays in his music videos. This has been labeled as Jeffcest, and each Jeff is a clone, the clones are each named after their respective song titles unless they already have name, pretty much everything about Jeffcest is fan made.

The most prominent of Jeffcest being a character called Sunshine from the music video Dum Dum. (There are 3 music videos for Dum Dum, Thai, English and an Unchained version)

(Ghost and Lucid are two of the other most used)

Jeff has dressed up as Sunshine during a concert and was also just brought back in Jeff's most recent MV called Ride Or Die. (which only came out 5 days ago)

Sunshine has his whole own lore (not fanmade comes from Jeff) which I wont get into here but if you want me to explain feel free to message me :)

Jeffs most popular song is probably Fade (based on the views, 208 million)

But his other most popular song is probably Why Don't You Stay which is an OST from KinnPorsche. There is a Thai and English version.
