Although the domesticated goldfish and koi are cyprinids of Asian origins, most aquarists attention is focussed on Asian cyprinids from more tropical climates. Which overlooks a number of delightful species suited to unheated aquariums, in a living room with a temperature of about 18 to 22 degrees centigrade.
An example of such a fish might be Sarcocheilichthys parvus, which is traded under the cumbersome label 'Chinese neon golden stripe shark'. Other species in the same subclade of its genus are imported, sometimes in the same shipments, and bearing the same identification - all of them tend to be labelled as S. parvus. So there is a degree of confusion in the aquarium trade but it seems quite irrelevant to their husbandry.
In fact a number of carp species are known as 'sharks', and they do not constitute a clade among that clade. All of them merely evoke in their human observer, thoughts of the marine predators of that name. The cyprinid 'sharks' or 'shark-minnows' possess a high dorsal fin, and often quite a sleek overall form. Cyprinids as a whole are not especially predatory, but 'sharks' tend to swim and feed near the bottom, and possess an underslung mouth
Sarcocheilichthys sp. are zoologically gudgeons, but they share an unusual trait with their distant bitterling kin, which are also carp or cyprinids. Specifically, the females of this genus possess a long ovipositor, and species of this genus are known to deposit their eggs inside live unionid bivalves, in the manner of the bitterlings. Surely this habit has convergently evolved in these two, separate carp lineages.
This is an active, bottom swimming stream fish, native to the subtropical region of southern China, where it is distributed to the south of the Yangtze. There they are found in clear, flowing water, and in these habitats they are sympatric with other fishes such as Microphysogobio, Rhodeus and Rhinogobius. They are normally a little below 6 centimeters, or 2 and a 1/2 inches long, yet can sometimes reach 8 centimeters or a little longer than 3 inches.
In the wild these carp live over mixed substrates of sand, pebbles, and boulders, and they display a preference for environments with clear water. In samples from localities where this fish lives in China, the water pH is 7.5 to 8, and its temperature varies by up to 8 degrees centigrade throughout the year, but averages at about 21 degrees annually. This is similar to a comfortably heated British room temperature.
Feeding the genus Sarcocheilichthys is unproblematic in the aquarium. Their wild diet seemingly includes both animal and vegetable components, and they take to a diet that includes the ubiquitous pellet and flake preparations, as well as defrosted foodstuffs. Because they possess a downturned mouth they are adapted to feed on the bottom, originally on algae and benthic animals.
Although their water must be clear and good quality, it does not need to flow fast. Their decor should both break any severe flow, and provide them with hiding places. They should be kept in a group, among which they might jostle for hierarchy, so about 8 fishes should be the minimum number cohabited, and with good thought put into their aquascape. These are peaceful community fish and certainly 'a bit different' for the unheated freshwater aquarium.

marauders era age hcs
because i feel like the entire cast couldn't've been all the same age. c'mon guys. (yes, i do know that some of these have canon different ages. i don't care tho)
gryffindors:
frank longbottom and alice fortescue are about 3 years older than the marauders/valkyries (james, sirius, remus, peter/lily, marlene, and mary) and act as sort of mentors to james and mary.
kingsley (can we please change his last name) is also the same year as frank and alice.
emmeline vance is about a year younger than the marauders/valkyries. she has a combination of admiration and jealousy for being older and cooler.
slytherins:
the pantheon (dorcas, evan, regulus, barty, pandora) are a year younger than the marauders/valkyries.
davey gudgeon is a the marauder's age, but due to low slytherin birthrates and uneven dorm numbers, was lumped in with evan and regulus as dorm-mates. they ignore each other.
the ophidians: alecto carrow, zoya zabini, and aurora sinatra are the same age as frank and alice. look up to bella a LOT.
bellatrix is in her 6th year when the marauders arrive, and in her 7th when the pantheon arrive.
narcissa and lucius are 3 years older than the marauders (same age as frank and alice)
pleasepleaseplease let this be canon.......... ravenclaw/hufflepuff ver coming soon maybe if i feel like it

I've been making steady progress on Hycia, the card game I'm working to create and develop. I'm already on week 6 of regularly scheduled updates and content, creating 4 new characters to be shown on Fridays. I post these characters and their bios on the main website as well as Hycia's other social media accounts on different platforms, but I'm debating over sharing some of those characters here on Tumblr as well.
If you want to meet the rest of the cast and learn about how the card game is played, take a look at the website below:

This week's batch was especially fun for me to develop, Cory cats, redtail catfish, and ESPECIALLY coelacanths are some of my fav fish of all time. IF you enjoy marine biology and learning about our underwater world as much as I do, then this would be the perfect card game to come and join me. It's just fun to be able to geek out over this kind of thing, and I guess these characters and this world of Hycia I'm building is my way of expressing that.

Gudgeon (Gobio gobio)!
Tumblr media
Small barbels at the corners of the mouth help the gudgeon find small organisms hidden in the sand and gravel. They like to live in schools, and can make small squeaking sounds to communicate with fellow schoolmates!

thinking about regulus in first year, all happy he's in slytherin and how proud his parents will be and trying not to think about sirius. when he opens the door to his new dormitory, expecting likeminded individuals of rich pureblooded introverts who'll all listen to classical music and wear traditional robes and are well-read.
only to come face to face with evan rosier, at least a rich pureblood from a family with similar values to his own and recognises him from gatherings, but evan is clearly not a likeminded individual because he is currently wearing jeans and is unpacking a strange, large poster with the words 'grateful dead' on.
and his other roommate, a boy he doesn't recognise but soon learns is named davey gudgeon, who is talking loudly a mile a minute about absolute nonsense whilst wearing a brightly coloured and patterned shirt and is shoving his clothes into his dresser without folding a single item.
he'd probably send an owl to his parents asking to transfer to beauxbatons-

I added a trio of peacock gudgeon to the 40B. I'm really enjoying them, they are active, beautiful and have weird little personalities. At first one of the peacocks and one of the red pencil fish had a wary habit of circling and chasing each other, but it stopped after a few days.
Tumblr media
They also seem really hardy - one jumped while I was acclimating them to the tank and I found it on the floor, picking it up was no easy feat and then I just ran and tossed it into the tank. I had thought it might die from shock or stress, but is doing great weeks later. They have also been eating well, I had read they might be picky and hard to feed. At first they only wanted frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp but now they try everything including pellets.
Bonus: Lemon the bristlenose is getting large and bushy and honestly a little belligerent.

The starfish shrimp is a species of shrimp in the family Palaemonidae. It is always found in association with a starfish – usually on the undersurface – and often changes its colour to match that of its host. It grows to a maximum length of 15mm. This shot shows it on the undersurface of a blue Echinaster sea star. Western Australia.
