SONG OF THE WEEK: “That Lucky Old Sun” https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/that-lucky-old-sun
The lyrics of "Lucky Old Sun" contrast the toil and hardship of the singer's life with the obliviousness of the natural world. Yet he sees a silver lining and God's deliverance behind it all. This song was written in 1949 by big band musician Beasley Smith and prolific Tin Pan Alley lyricist Haven Gillespie—who also wrote "You Go To My Head" (another favorite of mine). They said “Ol’ Man River” inspired this song, which gained more presence with me after hearing Brian Wilson's 2007 concept album based on this song. In 2020 I added it to my set list for when I perform in assisted living homes. My arrangement blends the definitive Frankie Laine recording with the soul of Louis Armstrong's (in 1949 both artists released "competing” versions). I've grown fond of singing it and I added a gospel flair to it. Please listen (feedback welcome), and don’t work too hard out there.

The Real Book And How it Came About
The Real Book And How it Came About
Since the mid-1970s, almost every jazz musician has owned a copy of the same book. It has a peach-colored cover, a chunky, 1970s-style logo, and a black plastic binding. It’s delightfully homemade-looking—like it was printed by a bunch of teenagers at a Kinkos. And inside is the sheet music for hundreds of common jazz tunes— The history of the famous “Real Book”, for any musician worth their…

It’s day 3 of the #spinthroughspringchallenge by @talesofvinyl: Under Blue Skies - Blue Vinyl. Bob Dylan - Fallen Angels (Columbia, 2016) One could write a think piece or two about Bob Dylan’s turn to the Great American Songbook around the same time as enough of the country fell for a con man to elect him president. Or one could simply admire the craftsmanship and the sheer gumption behind these performances. Also, this Barnes & Noble Exclusive pressing came on beautiful blue vinyl! #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #aprilvinylchallenge #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity @bobdylan #greatamericansongbook https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb6KAS9AM7M/?utm_medium=tumblr

SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO “Orange Coloured Sky” ...or the uncanny way this song connects Davy Jones (Monkees), Burt Ward (Batman), and Frank Zappa. “Orange Coloured Sky” is the pop-jazz standard that was a breakout hit for Nat “King” Cole, released August 1950. The song was revived in a particular way by Richard Thompson in his “1000 Years of Popular Music” project, which leads to the story of how Davy Jones embraced it and made it part of his live set. Here’s my take, complete with back story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpFHl0PP6bw&t=31s
