Minor Real Life Complaint
Work for the government, they say.
Sure, the benefits are nice, but damn, sometimes I get tired of reporting what I'm doing/have been doing instead of just doing my job.
Then again, if I worked in the private world again, I'd be crushed by billables (again), so maybe it's not so bad...

“Army Clerk Gets Two Years,” Ottawa Journal. October 15, 1942. Page 3. ---- Joseph Real Michaud, 31. of 340 Somerset street west today was sentenced by Deputy Magistrate Sauve to two years in Kingston Penitentiary for stealing $3,182 in Government funds from the Ottawa Area Command headquarters, where he was employed as a clerk.
“l feel sorry, for your wife and child", the magistrate said, in passing sentence. "Although the system of checking up on the money received by you was not what It should have been in this particular department, it is no excuse for what you have done. '
The magistrate was convinced that had the stealing of the money been discovered, "as it should have been a month or so after it started", Michaud would not have been facing such a serious charge.
Michaud pleaded guilty on September 29 to stealing the money over a period from October, 1940, to January of this year. In March he was sentenced to six month in the Ontario Reformatory for uttering forged documents and was paroled In August. Later he was arrested on the theft charge.
[AL: Michaud was 31 years, married, and despite his government clerk job, his prison file indicates a ‘window cleaner’ job. French Canadian, he was born in Hull-Gatineau but lived in Ottawa with his wife. He had no previous criminal record. He was convict #7072 at Kingston Penitentiary, and worked in the shoe shop. He was paroled November 1943.]

This fic is going to be either a runaway success or so niche as to be unreadably boring to anyone who isn't a fan of budget tracking

Although HeroAca's ethics are conscientious, we can also see a glimpse of modern dangers. At least as far as the developments to date are concerned, it seems that at the base of the work lies naive nationalism and a lack of imagination toward the situation in which official authority expands in the name of "justice." However, this nationalism seems to have an inclusive character, just like the nationalism of nationhood, which is another hidden basis of "Shounen Jump Values." As a fusion with such nationalism, we may be able to see in HeroAca the aspect of a higher level of community ethics that is relativistic and individualistic, yet aware of responsibility to "others." However, according to Karatani's logic, nationalism, which is a "(insular) community" way of thinking, should be in conflict with "(broad) social" thinking. Perhaps in the case of nationalism as a nationhood founded on universal ideals and principles, it does not actually contradict "social" thinking.
Still, it is important to note that even such nationalism is always in danger of slipping into exclusionary logic when a crisis occurs. Although HeroAca clearly denounce dictators, it does not have the imagination to understand that historically, bureaucrats/civil servants were the means by which rulers carry out their rule, so the current positioning of Heroes is a status that could support movements such as the state control of society that occurred in Japan in the late 1930s (fascism). [HeroAca fails to show enough wariness towards social control by public authorities.]
...
In that sense, if Heroes are imagined as an entity rooted in the network of "Hero Agencies" in the story and its spiritual ethics are depicted as maintaining a healthy tension with the state, then its ethics may be considered to be truly "social."

To the 9-1-1 fans who are worried about Gerrard becoming captain again of the 118, here’s some info from a government employee (not first responder but I’ve seen people retire and people transfer and have that all messed up due to a grievance or complaint):
All of them can petition to have Gerrard removed due to his past bigotry to 2 current members. He will be transferred elsewhere. If Tommy gets in on it and writes an affidavit detailing Gerrard being homophobic at the medal ceremony and Buck being his boyfriend, that could get him moved out of being Buck’s boss. Hen and Chimney could also have cases of not feeling comfortable with a racist supervisor due to past filed complaints. If they have evidence of his picture with the lady who sabotaged Mara’s adoption, they can claim retaliation for getting him ousted in the past. They can pretty much prevent him from coming back. I’ve seen it happen at the city and county levels.
Retirement is a lengthy-ish process before it goes into effect, so Bobby can reverse it. He can also be hired temporarily as a retiree who is still on the job because the vacancy can’t be filled. I’ve seen it happen in LA City, but I don’t know the technical term.
Fun fact: even supervisors have a probation period, unless they’re temporarily assigned to a post due to vacancy that can’t be filled right away. Gerrard burned too many bridges at the 118, so they could sabotage him easily and get him out of there. However, since he’s a supervisor and government employee, it could be lengthy, but if Bobby wants to return, the higher ups would just transfer Gerrard out rather than deal with endless complaints and potential lawsuit if Gerrard gets back to his old tricks.
Also, have you met government employees? We are some of the pettiest folk around, and we document everything when it comes to fellow employees we don’t like. It’d still take awhile, but Gerrard would be forced into being nice. Otherwise, he’d get hit with a lawsuit and grievance. Even if he’s not immediately removed from his post, he’d be suspended for some time and not able to work with the people who filed against him.
And finally, word spreads in government work. Bad supervisors/employees will end up with a reputation government agency-wide because people transfer/promote between departments and divisions, and locations often, and they talk. I guarantee that Gerrard has done bad things at other stations that have been documented, so there’s a history to go along with any future complaints the 118 will have.
Oh, one more last point, the 118 could pull a stunt similar to what happened in The Closer tv show. When the detectives heard their supervisor might face consequences for some of her actions, they all signed letters saying they would quit if anything happened to her. It rendered the complaints against their supervisor useless since an empty department looks worse than a few higher ups with grudges.
So worry not, the writers have many real life avenues to choose from to put into next season’s storyline to get rid of Gerrard.
Feel free to add more info about government employees in LA or correct me where I said something wrong.
