How to write genius level characters? :(
One of the most reliable measures of intelligence today is the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scaleā€”currently in its 5th edition, with an upcoming edition in the works.
Using the tool/scale, scores are converted into nominal categories designated by certain cutoff boundaries for quick reference:
Measured IQ Range ā€” Category
145-160: Very gifted or highly advanced
130ā€“144: Gifted or very advanced
120ā€“129: Superior
110ā€“119: High average
90ā€“109: Average
80ā€“89: Low average
70ā€“79: Borderline impaired or delayed
55ā€“69: Mildly impaired or delayed
40ā€“54: Moderately impaired or delayed
To write your "genius" character, you may want them within the Gifted to Very Gifted categories.
Note: With reference to this list, Roid (2003) cautioned that ā€œthe important concern is to describe the examineeā€™s skills and abilities in detail, going beyond the label itselfā€. The primary value of such labels is as a shorthand reference in some psychological reports.
These are the factors measured by the scale, and you ideally should aim for your "genius" character/s to exhibit high levels of:
Fluid Reasoning: Novel problem solving; understanding of relationships that are not culturally bound
Knowledge: Skills and knowledge acquired by formal and informal education
Quantitative Reasoning: Knowledge of mathematical thinking including number concepts, estimation, problem solving, and measurement
Visual-Spatial Processing: Ability to see patterns and relationships and spatial orientation as well as the gestalt among diverse visual stimuli
Working Memory: Cognitive process of temporarily storing and then transforming or sorting information in memory
Or maybe your character doesn't excel in all of these areas but in a specific one, or just a few of these. Maybe they perform within the average or high average in some, but are highly gifted in other areas.
The following may also guide you in writing your genius character, based on research compiled by Dr. J. Renzulli, which can be found in the Mensa Gifted Youth Handbook:
Characteristics of Giftedness

Reasons things out for him- or herself
MOTIVATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Becomes easily absorbed with and truly involved in certain topics or problems
Is easily bored with routine tasks
Needs little external motivation to follow through in work that initially excited him or her
Strives toward perfection; is self-critical; is not easily satisfied with his or her own speed and products
Prefers to work independently; requires little direction from teachers
Is interested in many "adult" problems such as religion, politics, sex andĀ race
Stubborn in his or her beliefs
Concerned with right and wrong, good and bad
CREATIVITY CHARACTERISTICS
Constantly asking questions about anything and everything
Often offers unusual, unique orĀ clever responses
Is uninhibited in expressions of opinion
Is a high-risk taker;Ā is adventurous and speculative

Wei Wuxian not knowing about the Lan Forehead Ribbon in "House of Gentians"
What LWJ says in this part is the HoG-verse assumption regarding WWX not knowing the meaning of the forehead ribbon. The idea/opinion is mine, it's how I see it based on my reading, so it might not be true! But this is the setting for HoG nonetheless.
Please take into consideration that this is me explaining the technical behind the scenes of my thought process to make these pages. I base my work on the novel and what is written there only. This is not me trying to explain the novel, but only what I, as a creator of an AU, thought that I can use for it to work.
So please, read till the end and if you have your own insights to share, do it!
So what is the explanation for Wei Wuxian not knowing the meaning of the ribbon and finding it out in canon? We have 2 versions.
Novel version (also Manhua and audio drama): WWX doesnā€™t know the meaning of the forehead ribbon, and the cause is unknown. He learns about it from the Lan juniors in his second life.
Donghua version: The source of information about the ribbon is the Lan rule book, and WWX copied that part wrong. Only in his second life, when he flipped through LWJā€™s notes, he found the mistake and the correct meaning written by LWJ.
I believe donghua had its own reasons to bend the plot this way (especially since censorship laws would forbid presenting the meaning of the ribbon so straightforwardly fearing the possibility of hinting on wangxian relationship, so showing it as one second shot of a notebook with tons of text was a good choice on their part to both deal with the censorship and still maintain the main idea).
HoG-verse follows the novel, therefore it does not assume that WWX knew, or could know the meaning of the ribbon from the Lan rules. We donā€™t even know if itā€™s IN the Lan rules. According to the novel, WWX had to copy about four fifths of the entire Lan rule book, see here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And we do know that WWX remembered quite a lot of the rules, as he says to Jin Ling in the temple:
Tumblr media
(In fact WWX is shown as someone with good memory, especially of things he read. He excels in his class in CR showing that he knows a lot of stuff compared to his classmates, he remembered phrases he read once from Wen Maoā€™s book, and he remembers the Lan rules he copied many times).
I also donā€™t think he has ā€œselective memoryā€ cause the only times WWX was shown as forgetting something (as far as I recall) is the times he was feverish (Tulu Xuanwu cave, forgetting the song the LWJ played to him) and devastated/not caring about whatā€™s going on around him (after the massacre on Nightless City, after his Shijie died, didnā€™t remember LWJ saving him and confessing to him).
In both cases, he eventually remembers. He remembers by himself the song LWJ played in the end of the novel, and about the events of Nightless City, when LXC tells him about what happened, he admits that his memory is clouded:
Tumblr media
Meaning he eventually recalls the things he forgot. This is opposed to his reaction when he finds out about the Lan ribbon from the Lan juniors. Itā€™s really something he hears for the first time. If WWX really copied this from the rule book and forgot, he shouldā€™ve remembered it at this point, but heā€™s too surprised, excited and embarrassed.
PLUS, if WWX had copied the meaning of the forehead ribbon from the Lan rule book, I donā€™t think he would forget it. He always thought the Lans to be strict, boring and uptight, so such a ā€œjuicyā€ piece of information would by no means go unnoticed by him. Heā€™d use this info to tease the hell out of young LWJ hahahaā€¦notice how he is surprised that the Lans could have a romantic side:
Tumblr media
ANYWAYS this is just to show that the donghua version isnā€™t exactly possible in novel-verse.
In fact, in the novel, WWX does know only one meaning of the forehead ribbon, or maybe its purpose:
Tumblr media
Maybe THIS was what he read in the Lan Rule book, but itā€™s still not as in the donghua, where he eventually came to know that the ribbon is supposed to be given to oneā€™s fated other. If this knowledge about the ribbon being a tool for self-regulation was what he learned from the Lan book, then he is still left in the dark because he suspects there is another meaning to the ribbon and he just doesnā€™t know it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
According to these parts, it doesnā€™t seem that WWX knew and forgot, but that he really didnā€™t know the whole story behind the ribbon. Again, his reaction is very strong:
Tumblr media
Again, this is different from him realizing that his memory was clouded after the events of Nightless City. This is REALLY something he NEVER knew. Anyways back to the conversation with the juniors, where WWX finds the truth, LSZ tells that:
Tumblr media
Apparently this meaning of the ribbon is something that was passed down the generations. We donā€™t know if it was passed down by script or orally, or both, but it is something that has turned into a custom for the Lans.
And since it is a major custom in such a major sect such as theirs, I believe that it was known among other sects too.
Thereā€™s the opinion that this meaning of the forehead ribbon was known to Lans only, but I personally donā€™t think so, because the Lans themselves had no problem of telling about it to outsiders.
Recall the text I added before where JL says to WWX that he learned its meaning:
Tumblr media
And also, LSZ and LJY have no problem revealing it to WWX, who they still think is Mo Xuanyu at this point.
Also, in his first life, back on Phoenix Mountain, it seems that LXC was willing to tell WWX the meaning:
Tumblr media
(ok this is personally my head canon but I think that LWJ stopped LXC from revealing the meaning of the ribbon because he kinda lowkey wanted WWX to continue touching/asking to touch it, and was afraid that by learning what the ribbon means, WWX would feel ashamed and stop. I mean, if I was LWJ and my crush would constantly touch or ask to touch the object that is supposed to be given to my fated other Iā€™D DEVELOP HOPES AND THINK WHAT IF THIS IS FATE??? And eventually Iā€™d want it to become true. :ā€™) )
Anyways back to the matter at hand, the Lans seem to have no problem telling others whatā€™s the meaning of the ribbon is. I also donā€™t think that taking oneā€™s ribbon off has an immediate sexual association. IT CAN HAVE, AND IT IS, but itā€™s not the main idea of it, in my opinion. Itā€™s an object thatā€™s supposed to be given only to the otherā€™s beloved no matter in which situation. Meaning, that the moment they are together, or wed, the moment they know they love each other, then it gives the fated person the validity to touch the ribbon. If it had a solely sexual association then I guess this scene wouldnā€™t happen:
Tumblr media
LWJ enters a wine shop without his forehead ribbon, and WWX plays with it. You can say that this is them acting SUPERRRR shamelessly, but I really believe thereā€™s nothing so scandalizing about it. LWJ feels comfortable giving him the ribbon because they are finally together. WWX accepted his feelings, and therefore, LWJ can take it off and give it to him, and (correct me if Iā€™m wrong) nowhere is it mentioned that itā€™s something thatā€™s supposed to be done only at the coupleā€™s private chambers.
(Thatā€™s also why I felt confident enough to have LWJ remove his ribbon and tie it on WWX in front of everyone at the inn, even though it DID have a strong meaning of letting go of self regulation, but in my eyes this was possible also because WWX is his beloved one, even though his feelings arenā€™t returned yet.)
ANYWAYS it seems that the Lans have no problem telling about the meaning to outsiders, because (in my eyes) thereā€™s really nothing TOO sensitive about the fact that the meaning of the ribbon is that you can give it only to your loved one. I donā€™t think itā€™s THAT grave to be kept a secret from the world. On the contrary, in a world such as theirs, which is built on honor and respect to customs and traditions, I guess itā€™s important for others to know about such a custom, if only so that theyā€™d know not to touch the ribbon accidentally or on purpose, to avoid offending the Lan member. (I donā€™t know if itā€™s true but in my eyes the Lans make this ceremony of giving their ribbon to their loved one on their wedding hehehe so yeah, I do imagine that if outsiders attended a Lan wedding, theyā€™d see this custom happening).
And as I believe happened in all periods of our real world, that there were books and records written about history, cultures and traditions of peoples, the same exists in MDZS verse. I believe that there would exist books and records about the history and customs of different sects, and I think that it's not impossible that the meaning of the Lan forehead ribbon is also mentioned briefly somewhere in a book about the Lan Clan/Sect, or elsewhere.
And this finally brings me to this page of HoG that LWJ asks Wei Wuxian this question. WWX wants to know the meaning of the ribbon for the first time, after so many times of touching or wanting to touch it.
I think that younger LWJ didnā€™t even KNOW that WWX doesnā€™t know the meaning of the ribbon. Hell, in his eyes it could have been just another malicious prank done by this shameless boy who has no respect. Maybe only later did LWJ realize that WWX really didnā€™t know the meaning.
Hearing WWXā€™s question finally being asked, LWJ isnā€™t ready to answer him yet. He gave him the ribbon, yes, but it was something he did as a statement to his Shishu and others. As I mentioned before, he didnā€™t give WWX his ribbon during their wedding, nor after it. Because he knows that WWX doesnā€™t return his feelings and that this marriage isnā€™t really out of love.
Thatā€™s why he isnā€™t willing to answer his question right away. Instead, he just teases WWX by answering with a question of his own. And since WWX brought their past, with how he touched his ribbon and was rejected, LWJ also brings his perspective on the past - like, how could you do all that, and not even know whatā€™s the meaning of what you do?
LWJ was a student with WWX in cloud recesses and heard how he answered all questions correctly and fast. WWX was outstanding compared to his classmates, showing that he did some reading. LOL as I was making this there was this picture of WWXā€™s room running on twitter, and I really loved that private library/study corner he had there with tons of books.
Tumblr media
It was clear that WWX did read about the cultivation world, including random sectsā€™ history, traditions etc. This is where Iā€™m sure that such a book would exist about the Lan Sect too.
And LWJ asks him if he didnā€™t read anything about the Lans as he was reading about all other sects. Whatā€™s the answer to that? In HoG-verse, I guess WWX missed this information somehow. He really didnā€™t know the meaning of the ribbon from any source, and he still doesnā€™t know.
BUT HEā€™S GONNA FIND OUT I PROMISE HEHEHE SOā€¦.there you have it! This is HoGā€™s version of dealing with the forehead ribbon matter, where WWX stayed alive and dared raise the question before HGJ himself.
ANOTHER IMPORTANT NOTE
I need to clarify one more thing, guys. This isn't me stating an idea about the novel, this is me sharing my thought process in order to make my AU work. Let me explain:
Even if the info about the Lan ribbon is written in the rule book, I couldn't be sure about that because it isn't specified in a clear manner. The only certain source for that is the donghua, which, as I'm sure you can understand, I can't use since it made many changes to the original story. I couldn't be sure if the info about the ribbon in the Lan rule book is a canon possibility or a donghua way of dealing with the plot. So, I DO NOT OPPOSE the idea that the info is in the Lan rule book! But I just needed clear evidence to work with.
LWJ was not about to answer WWX's question in that instant. He wanted to ask him back - just how come he didn't know?
So imagine me having to think about the text (and believe me I put a lot of thinking hahaha), I couldn't make LWJ say "Didn't you copy it in the rules? How could you miss it?" because again, I couldn't be 100% sure it WAS in fact canon that it's written in the rules.
So I made the decision to make him require about WWX's studious character which does 2 things:
based on my assumption that some knowledge about the Lan ribbon was available to the public because it seems to me that the Lans themselves are surprised that WWX doesn't know. imagine that this is like others know not to offer alcohol to the Lans so to not offend them. I'm sure that some basic knowledge about the ribbon was available to the public too, again, from courtesy reasons.
LWJ asking WWX this is my way of making it show that his character DID notice and DOES acknowledge WWX's intelligence. their studying in Gusu days was a chaos of LWJ avoiding WWX or giving him the cold shoulder. >This< LWJ however takes that unfortunate past experience and by this slight sarcastic reply shows WWX that he in fact noticed and appreciated WWX's smart and studious character.
So once again I stress out the fact that this is me creating this idea (which can be untrue!) out of technical reasons to make not only the AU in general work, but also THIS SPECIFIC moment of LWJ answering WWX without telling him the meaning.

Excellent Villain Writing
It's interesting because one of the plot points of Not a Typical Reincarnation Story is that the story's "fixes" to irregular human behavior in them are kind of poorly written - perhaps the original novel the character's stuck in was okay, but whoever's using that as a basis for a real world isn't good at adapting when a human brings in Facts And Logic.
Anyway in spite of that, the character of Cliff is actually an excellently written villain.
The Context: In the novel the brothers Cliff and Killian were fighting over the affections of Rhyse. Killian was briefly married to the evil Edith from the villainous Rigelhof family but her obsession and jealousy drives her to increasingly blatant acts of sabotage and violence and she's at last executed, and then the tension of the love triangle is in full swing. But in the comic Edith is played by a reincarnated human - and not just any, but one who read the novel. She knows how this goes for her if she's a jealous little shit, so she is a fine upstanding citizen and furthermore she is genuinely nice to Rhyse, which screws with everything about her portion of the base story. If she's not being horrible it would make the good-guy family look bad to execute her, so she's living past where she was supposed to be written out of the story. But if she's a good person and as bewitchingly lovely as the evil temptress she was supposed to be, it makes Killian look bad if he doesn't, like, at least attempt to care for his own wife.
In the process of all this story-breaking, Killian's been falling for her.
And finally there's enough context for the latest scene:
Cliff is egging on his brother to pay less attention to his own wife and more attention to Rhyse, who is supposed to be the woman in the love triangle. Now, Cliff has been firmly villain-coded the whole story long. Every time something bad is happening to a good person and he's on screen, he is smiling. And a lot of the story we've seen that hasn't been from Edith's perspective has been from Killian's, and Cliff is the jerk older brother that never lets him win at anything.
And this is what makes his act here such excellent villain writing.
By rights Cliff should be happy to let his brother get out of the love triangle so he wins by default, but he's so obsessed with the contest that he can't accept the idea of his brother walking away from it and spending attention on his own damn wife. It's not enough to have Rhyse at his side or even to "win her heart." Without his brother to defeat at it, he's lost and confused.
In this scene Cliff is at once pathetic, obnoxious, twisted, sad, and really offensive. He's been a constant threat to Edith, happily treating her as guilty-by-default, like an NPC whose dialogue hasn't been properly rewritten in response to altered player behavior. But this shows how little he thinks of his brother and even of Rhyse herself.
And the thing is, this idea of the "sore winner" is a character most of us have met. Even if Cliff turns out to be doing this because he's actually an NPC that can't pivot like a real person, or something, for now this still feels like pretty naturalistic character writing. It's not that unusual for actual people to get hung up on the people around them sticking to the script, and paradoxically upset with character growth in people they should care be happy for.

Hi!! I see you post occasionally about cdramas. I went to China this summer and I learned a little Mandarin (like enough to say, ā€œI donā€™t speak good Mandarin.ā€) Would I be able to muddle through cdramas with captions? (Also any suggestions on which ones to watch and where to watch them?). Thanks so much <3
ooh i hope you had lots of fun there! with subtitles i think you could absolutely make it through most cdramas; it depends on how good the subs are, honestly, because alas translating mandarin chinese to english (or any latin-based language, for that matter) is i think one of the most difficult language translations possible because the chinese language is just so rife with chengyu (idioms).
as for recs, i do have a handful i watched recently enough that i feel more confident in trusting my own taste LOL. i almost exclusively watch historical dramas, so these are definitely going to be very skewed to my personal preferences.
also, this will be long because i love my cdramas. bear with me!
word of honor/å±±ę²³ä»¤ (2021)
Tumblr media
episodes: 36
genre: wuxia (chinese martial arts fantasy; think of crouching tiger hidden dragon), dangai (cdrama adapted from a chinese gay romance novel), adventure, political intrigue
arguably the most explicitly gay cdrama that's come out in the last decade despite censorship issues in chinese tv broadcasting
a lonely ex-assassin retires and begins a slow 1-year suicide by poison, but his death plan is interrupted by a flirtatious (& dangerous) man with a mysterious background + a newly orphaned kid he accidentally becomes responsible for. cue politics and drama!
if you don't mind dealing with low-budget CGIā€”though the show is so immersive it hardly makes a differenceā€”the story features: fascinating & subversive themes about life & morality, a well-written cast of bloodthirsty women, an incredibly charming found family, and an absolutely fantastic, dramatic, devoted slow burn between the two male leads
if you prefer more mature romanceā€”lots of flirting & sexual tension between two highly intelligent & capable men who are 1) attracted to each other from the get-go 2) constantly trying to outmaneuver each other & figure each other out... this is the one!
if it means anything, i am recommending this one first because it's my all-time favorite cdrama! especially if you are queer like me :)
you can watch it subtitled on netflix or fully free & subtitled in HD on the official youku youtube channel
the double/å¢Øé›Øäŗ‘é—“ (2024)
Tumblr media
episodes: 40
genre: historical, romance, political intrigue
if you too are tired of stories about shallow, badly-written girlbosses with no dimension... this is the show for you!
protagonist is a happy woman who gets framed for adultery & buried alive by her husbandā€”she survives and returns to enact revenge upon those who hurt her & her loved ones by assuming the identity of the young woman who died saving her. she makes many enemies and allies along the way + catches the attention of the emperor's notoriously cold & keen-eyed right hand man, duke su, who eventually becomes her very supportive love interest <3
high stakes & a plot that makes you hold your breath, GORGEOUS cinematography
a long list of complex and important female characters, most of them nasty and corrupt, all of them sympathetic and interesting. the show is good at making you assume at first that their characters won't be done justice, but just wait :)
from your resident het romance skeptic: excellent dynamic! protagonist and her duke are both confident, calculating schemers always trying to outsmart each other, but eventually join hands against common enemies. extremely slow burn with lots of tension and a refreshing lack of miscommunication
you can watch with subtitles on netflix, youku, and definitely some p/racy sites for east asian dramas

if you like sly 30 yr old protagonists, identity shenanigans, & mystery-solving with gay polycule undertones, this is the one for you!
as for potential shipping: if you like age gap stuff and/or devoted puppyboys and/or "A has idolized B (adult) since they were a child; now A is grown-up and wants to protect B" trope. OR if you like 30 yr old nemeses who act divorced. the 3 main guys all have chemistry; pick and choose your ship at will!
to save text, last year i made a passionate powerpoint post explaining the whole show, spoiler-free, in more detail!
you can watch it with subtitles on iqiyi for free or on aforementioned [redacted] sites
love between fairy and devil/č‹å…°čƀ (2022)
Tumblr media
episodes: 36
genre: romance, xianxia (chinese high fantasy), adventure
high budget CGI? in MY cdrama? it's more likely than you think!
please ignore the horrendous english title. a translation of the original chinese would be "the parting/goodbye of canglan", canglan being the main characters. the story is tragic but ends happily!
on the surface appears like an old-fashioned good girl x bad boy love story, but is far more emotionally interesting & 100% deserving of its sheer popularity
brave & kindhearted low-ranking 1,500 yr old orchid fairy spirit accidentally soulbonds with a 30,000 yr old demon lord war prisoner who just happens to be the nemesis of her realm, except she reaps all the benefits and he just suffers (hilariously)
very star-crossed, VERY funny bodyswapping, & with far more heart and consistency than many people assume. the romance is difficult in ways that make sense! genuinely thought my picky ass would not be charmed by this show and found myself fully crying by episode 8
oh, and gloriously stunning costuming. everyone looks good, all the time, even when they're covered in blood <3
if you're interested, here is the powerpoint post that convinced me!
you can watch with subtitles on netflix, or iqiyi & viki for free!
a journey to love/äø€åæµå…³å±± (2023)
Tumblr media
episodes: 40
genre: historical, romance, adventure, political intrigue
also female-centric! an infamous and deeply complex assassin protagonist hellbent on revenge against the people who framed her finds herself making a deal to train a timid princess into becoming a political force of nature, ft. her supportive and equally capable male love interest, his group of incredibly lovable and memorable best bros, a gorgeous cutthroat young marquis with an oedipus complex & a complicated backstory (who absolutely steals the show whenever he shows up), & a headstrong tomboy princess with a sweet and loyal heart
a fast-paced plot that never drags + excellent soundtrack + incredible action scenes + a genuinely convincing crossdressing plot where the female character actually passes as a man
unreasonably funny considering the political drama. i truly cannot understate how Fun this was to watch, especially if you like deadly domineering women who are badly socialized and hilarious, and female characters establishing positive and meaningful bonds with each other.
if you've never watched a cdrama, i will warn that most of them Do Not Pull Their Punches when it comes to making viewers cry. this one has shakespearian tragedy levels of death, including of major characters
you can watch with subtitles on iqiyi, and i'm sure some [redacted] sites also
hoping this list can be of help to you, anon! i cannot state how happy it makes me to see anyone express an interest in watching cdramas. i grew up on them, their long dramatic storylines and star-crossed romances, and they shaped my taste in fiction in more ways than i can say. if at any point you get around to watching any of these, feel free to yell in my inbox about it, and most importantly have fun and enjoy! <3

On Tournament Arcs (I want more of these in lit)
The ā€œtournament arcā€ is a staple of shonen anime. Iā€™d find it very hard to believe anyone on here hasnā€™t at least seen gifs of it so hereā€™s a quick breakdown: Your core cast of characters + extras and new adversaries are all thrown together in a tournament competing for anything from the low stakes of cash or bragging rights to who lives and who dies by the hand of the nefarious god throwing the tournament.
These are extremely popular for a few reasons:
Theyā€™re fodder for a ton of episodes without a whole lot of complicated storyā€”the story is baked into the different rounds of combat
Thereā€™s a chance for a lot of different intense character interaction that might not normally happen pitting two random names against each other
They can sometimes artificially raise the stakesā€”in isolation, winning the Round of 16 in a series about saving the world doesnā€™t mean anything, but winning any one game might give the heroes the chance to stay alive just one more day
I just rewatched the first tournament arc of My Hero Academia a few days ago (the first sports festival) and man, I do miss when this show was good.
So! While tournament arcs arenā€™t exclusive to shows with super powers or magical abilities like Narutoā€”theyā€™re baked into a sports animeā€”todayā€™s essay is all about the efficiency and shake-ups that MHA pulled off, since its pacing is something you could realistically cram into a written novel, and, well, I like this one.
Disclaimer: This show is incredibly manipulative, in a good way (at least in earlier seasons it was in a good way). Elements are way more dramatic than they should be due to the music, the animation, and the pacing, but youā€™re having fun right along with the characters at the edge of your seat. The excitement isnā€™t manufactured, youā€™re hyped right along with the people in the stands. This isnā€™t very translatable to page, unfortunately.
Second disclaimer: I DNFed this show midway through an episode in season 5 and never went back. It got so bad I literally turned it off in both disgust and sheer boredom. I am not an MHA superfan.
ā€”
Pacing:
For a shonen anime, this first tournament arc is brutally efficient. Take a show like Naruto or DBZ, shows known for their filler, and their tournament arcs for any given season will last 50 episodes or more. MHAā€™s is 11 episodes, 12 if you want to include the setup in episode 1. In that time, thereā€™s three unique stages of combat and an entire three-tiered 1v1 tournament within the tournament.
Some fights last two episodes, some last about 30 seconds, but none are too drawn out, or too rushed, based on whoā€™s fighting and what their powers are.
Example: Todoroki kind of has ā€œinstakillā€ powers (or at least he does in this arc, he forgets about it 6 episodes later) and if heā€™s up against anyone who doesnā€™t have the specific kind of powers that can counteract his, the fightā€™s decided pretty much instantly, like when heā€™s up against quasi-Spiderman Sero, and manifests a whole glacier from teenage angst. When he is up against somebody who he canā€™t freeze immediately, well, thatā€™s where the drama comes from. This is his arc, after all.
Character fodder:
Not only that, but itā€™s not 11 straight episodes of 1v1. The first leg of combat is an obstacle race, the second is a ā€œcavalry battleā€ with teams, and the last, the majority, is 1v1. These different challenges require the core characters to think different ways, and as the number of competitors thin dramatically, different side characters get the chance to shine at different points in the arc as more and more are disqualified.
But the way that this arc is written leaves even some core characters in the protagonist class on the outs pretty quickly, even those who make it to the final round, usually due to bad matchups. Characters who had excelled either in power, physical ability, or intelligence just arenā€™t suited to face whoever theyā€™re up against and it shocks them as much as it does the audience. Even when it forces them to get creativeā€”and that is one thing I loved about this show in its early years, how smart some characters had to be with their niche powers to compete with the natural born powerhouses.
A surprising standout fight was Bakugo vs Uraraka, where nearly every single person in the stands, including the teachers, all professional heroes, were like ā€œdude you canā€™t hit a girl, you can explode shit with your hands, sheā€™s only got anti gravityā€ and Bakugo did not give a single fuck about whatā€™s in Urarakaā€™s pants. It shows that heā€™s smart, and that heā€™s a dick, but he has a shit ton of respect for other peopleā€™s power and determination when they have as much as he does. Only one other character, their personal teacher, Aizawa, notices: To go easy on her would be a far greater insult than to treat her like an equal challenger.
She lost, in a heartbreaking defeat, but she absolutely made him work for it. It did so much for his character, this whole arc did, but more on that later.
Audience expectations:
But the big reason this arc worked so well was how it subverted expectations. Midoriya is (or used to be) the showā€™s protagonist. In this arc, heā€™s got two real main adversaries in his way to gold: Bakugo, a kid with extremely impressive raw talent that heā€™s honed with a dangerous perfectionist streak, and Todoroki, who wants to win by half-assing it to piss off his abusive hero dad. Both of these two are far more competent with their powers while Midoriya still has the training wheels on his.
Usually, in these types of shows, if the hero doesnā€™t win, he comes in a very close second in the big dramatic final showdown. Itā€™s part of his arc to be not quite ready yet. But usually, he wins, and the character heā€™d beaten to a pulp learns some humility and joins the hero squad in the next arc out of respect to their better.
MHA doesnā€™t do that. Midoriya never faces Bakugo in the 1v1 and he faces Todoroki in the semis, not the finals, and he loses.
The big fight of the tournament is Midoriya vs Todoroki. I used to hear it compared to Rock Lee vs Gaara (which I actually have seen despite not liking Naruto) and itā€™sā€¦ not, if only because itā€™s missing about 300 episodes of buildup and drama between these two.
But the fight isnā€™t just a fistfight. Midoriya wants to win, yes, but heā€™s a hero, first, and he wants to save his friend in the true shonen way of punching friendship into his enemies. Their fight plus the buildup takes two episodes, littered with Todorokiā€™s PTSD flashbacks (to a gorgeous score) that basically boils down to:
Todoroki: Wah I hate my powers, fuck my dad, Iā€™m gonna half-ass this out of spite and my raw power is enough to win
Midoriya: Fuck you dude, if you want to beat me, you have to give it your all, and itā€™s not his powers. You may have inherited them, but itā€™s your power.
Well, Midoriya gets what he asked for, and Todoroki does not at all hold back.
And thatā€™s the semifinal.
With Midoriya out, thereā€™s still the rest of the semis and the final round. This does not happen.
So why did it happen? Because our hero isnā€™t ready yet. Heā€™s so new with his powers, so inexperienced in combat, that so far heā€™s skated by on his smarts and his sheer raw ability the few times heā€™s able to let it out like releasing a pressure valve, seriously injuring himself in the process. Against kids whoā€™ve been training their whole lives, being smart only got him so far.
It was the perfect path for his character, one weā€™ve only known for maybe 30 episodes in total at this point in the show. If he won or even just barely lost, that would have left so much less room for growth in later tournaments. Heā€™s hella OP, but heā€™s not at all a Mary Sue, and his greatest strengthā€”his heartā€”is what cost him the win. In the end, he lost the medal, but he won a friend.
And then the final round comes.
Bakugo vs Todoroki, the two most well-rounded kids in the class (in their whole grade level probably), after Bakugo opens the entire tournament with ā€œI pledge that Iā€™m going to winā€.
Thing is, with Bakugo, heā€™s an asshole, but heā€™s an asshole who continuously puts his money where his mouth is. Heā€™s never blowing smoke. If he says heā€™s going to do something, by god, he will do it.
So the final round comes and Bakugo tells Todoroki that he wants to win fair and square, that Todoroki'd better not hold back, heā€™d better give it his all, because going easy on Bakugo would be giving him the win, and he ainā€™t no charity case.
Thatā€¦ does not happen. One does not overcome a lifetime of childhood trauma by the Power of Friendship and one speech in this show. Todoroki botches it, gets his ass handed to him, and Bakugo wins the tournament, and he is pissed.
Character Arcs:
I already talked about Midoriya above and wonā€™t repeat myself, but like I said above, tournament arcs are a fantastic way to do many things at once, which is crucial to pacing. It wonā€™t feel stale, no matter how long or repetitive it is, so long as the characters are still developing within that repetition. This was about showing off their powers, yes, but the pressure to perform and get their names out their in a highly saturated, cynical heroism market of capitalism is a lot for 15 year old kids.
Some are out there to make money, being a hero to their families. Some are out there to be the best. Some are out there to be the friendly neighborhood super kid. Since all but one character must lose, everybody but Bakugo failed in some way, big or small, to make the impact they wanted on tournament day. And Bakugo, though he won, feels like he still failed because he won basically by default.
Since itā€™s set so early in the show, one would think that it would be a fantastic foundation for where all the core characters see themselves and where they go from here. If youā€™re writing this into a novel and you donā€™t have a million characters that donā€™t matter, itā€™s a brutally efficient way to establish the major players in high-octane fashion.
Iā€™mma gush about Bakugo for a second now: He and Todoroki are two sides of the same coin in this arc. Both are plagued by expectations because of their powers, and both suffer because of it. Todorokiā€™s been beaten like a dog by his dad to hone his fire and ice powers to one day usurp the number one hero.
Bakugo, though, Bakugo is ā€œthe gifted kidā€ who suddenly entered a world where the gap between him and everyone inferior to him is a lot smaller. He has incredible power, which has always gotten him high expectations and little margin for fucking up and looking weakā€”cause if youā€™ve got the ability to make explosions with your hands, you have to be the best all day every day. There is no falling off the wagon, there are no sick days, there is no flab or fat or cheat days.
All of this is an undercurrent in this arc. He has such high expectations for himself, such high expectations thrown on him by hero society, such critical views of his attitude and his powersā€”he was literally called a villain when he fought Uraraka and didnā€™t treat her like a ā€œfrailā€ little girlā€”that when he wins because Todoroki throws the fight, itā€™s the biggest insult anyone could do to him.
Nobody else cares, but Bakugo cares. In his desperate quest to always be the best or else, winning by default doesnā€™t prove anything to him. He doesnā€™t want the medal, he doesnā€™t want this victory by his name, he doesnā€™t want anything except a rematch that truly challenges him. And mad respect to this kid for it.
ā€”
Some things to consider for your tournament arc should you choose to write one
Every character should have their own separate goals and reasons for winning, beyond simply ā€œwinningā€. Why do they want to win, or what will happen to them, internally or externally, if they lose?
Would it be better for your hero to win right now, or lose so they have room to grow? Who else loses and how? Are they disqualified, do they cheat, is it a devastating defeat or a photo finish?
What do these people do to themselves in their desperation to win? Do they hurt themselves, go past their physical limit? Do they bully themselves and pick their faults apart? Are they completely different people when theyā€™re under this kind of pressure? Whoā€™s overconfident? Whoā€™s exactly as competent as they say they are?
What are the best matchups, not for spectacle, but for character development? In the written medium, character work absolutely comes before how pretty it might look one day on the silver screen, and thatā€™s what will hold audience attention long after the arc is over and done with. Thatā€™s what will have people coming back to reread over and over again.
Remember: The tournament is never just about the combat, itā€™s about the combatants.

Love In the Air is getting a Japanese adaptation.
Tumblr media
Things have come a full circle for MeMindY in a way. It was while traveling through Japan in November 2018 that MAME decided to start a production house to film series based on her novel in her own way.
Looks like it is a fan project of sorts based on what creators has to say on the project website, so it makes sense that it is MeMindYā€™s project that gets Japanese adaptation. (If not, it would have been GMMTV, BOC or some other government-supported production company that engaged in Thai governmentā€™s Commerce Ministry department facilitated ā€œBL as soft powerā€ negotiations with their Japanese counterparts.
Tumblr media
more on this here)
This adaptation is not surprising considering the crowd that showed up at MAMEā€™s Japanese fan-meet consisted of older folk too. It reminds me of Chen Hao producing Stay with Me. While I would be happy to have more bottom-up, demand-driven productions rather than top-down, supply-driven ones, it makes me worried too. I had previously expressed my wish for popular BL manga and novels to get live action adaptation. Now, we have a handful of live action based on works that have won Chil-chil awards but those adaptations have been disappointing to say the least.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
source
I am a little worried about production quality. Hopefully, theyā€™ll manage to balance cost and quality since this projectā€™s return on investment would be a signal to future initiatives. I am excited for Shoma who gave an excellent performance in the unfortunately gelded adaptation of the super-popular manga 25 Ji, Akasaka de. I am eager to know who will play Saifah (hopefully they'll retain that character) and Chai.
My Insane Wishlist: Non-Thai adaptation of MAMEā€™s BL
Breath ā€“ Japanese live action adaptation TulHin was one of the side couples in Love by Chance 2 but I want an adaptation that stays true to the spirit of their story. In addition, it will be really nice to see Hin in violet rope shibari in the hotel getaway scene. All the shibari scenes we got so far in live action BL has been fleeting and of very little consequence. Japan should attempt adapting this into period piece set in Taisho or early Showa era. The novel is well suited for an adaptation set in that period with rapidly changing position of the aristocracy in the society, conflict between old and new orders, nouveau riche industrialists, feudal households with retainers performing multiple functions, specific forms of xenophobia, grand balls, arranged marriages, intergenerational power struggle, familism and ample space for intrigue. Also, Japan has a good track record of being sincere in their depiction of complexities of androphilic male x androphilic female interactions ā€“ they can make Tul's struggle heart-wrenching to watch. Ā
OatShin from Test Love and OatShin Diary ā€“ Tamil-Marathi bilingual movie adaptation with Harshvardhan Rane as Shin, Arjun Das as Oat and Suriya as Akira (Shin's cousin brother). In the novel Love Storm from which Love in the Air is adapted, it is Oat and not Prapai who is the best street racer in their circuit. Saifah, Oat and Saifah's girlfriend are in fact friends and classmates from college - depicted in Test Love. Oat's boyfriend Shinji was his junior in college. Shin is friends with characters from Love By Chance. Their relationship starts at the end of Test Love and in OatShin Diaries we get to see them navigate long distance relationship, familial acceptance and work-life balance as salarymen. OatShin has a very cute dynamic - they are a riba CP (reversible couple) with a lot of push and pull. Shin is super sly and sensitive and I can see Harshvardhan teasing the hell out of whoever he is paired with. Arjun Das probably can't do racer very well - so just get him that ATV from Por for added illegality. He would be perfect as Oat and very adorable too.
Try Me: Chai Win ā€“ Japanese manga adaptation with minimal censor bars ā€“ Chaiā€™s pearlings needs to exist in 2D version.
Try Me: Chai Win ā€“ Turkish live action adaptation ā€“ I think Pawit-bey has a nice ring to it and I would pay to listen to it for 40 episodes of 2-hour length each. Maybe some over the top honorifics would be more suitable coming from Chaiā€™s mouth like efendi. Mert Yazicioglu or Ali Yagci as Win and Can Yaman as Chai.
Chai appeared in Love in the Air as a crucial minor character who comes to Phayu's rescue. He has a love story of his own with Pakin's civilian* cousin brother, Pawit aka Win, that is complicated by duty and obligations and extortive meddling by Pakin's dad (the kingpin).

What are your favorite pieces of media that you think accurately represent magic and spirit work? Movies, books, even music..
This is an interesting question, but one that requires a lot of thought, as I have read and watched an inordinate amount of books and movies. Plus, even really good fiction with pagan themes that I've read/watched is generally inaccurate in most ways, with some realistic aspects of magic woven in here and there. Some of my very favorite media relating to the subject can't really be included, simply because of how inaccurate it is overall, but there are a few that have caught my notice.
I'm sure I'll end up missing ones, which bugs me, but I'll do my best to recount some examples that I can think of:
The Love Witch (2016) is a movie that I think presents a strikingly realistic portrayal of what magic can look like. It manages to show some of the ways one might use magic to great effect, without actually skewing into fantasy at all. Clearly, the magic shown isn't going to line up with every paradigm, and its not exactly a heady or spirit-based story, but I think it's a very real look at how ritual and magic is/can be approached by many folks in the modern day.
The Witch (2015) is, above all else, a great slow-burn horror film and an excellent period-piece. However, it also portrays quite an accurate conception of folkloric beliefs about Witchcraft in the 17th century, which inexorably inform the realities of modern Witchcraft traditions. It does just barely skew into fantasy horror, but the actual folkloric information being presented is quite sound.
A Dark Song (2016) is a film that portrays ceremonial magic realistically in many ways. Ultimately, it is still a supernatural horror film, but the bulk of the magic in the movie is based directly on the Abramelin Operation, which was interesting to see. A lot of the ways that the magic "takes shape" in the film feels real enough to me, too (though it certainly takes it to extremes at points, as horror movies are wont to do).
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson is a horror novel I much enjoyed when I read it a coulple years ago, but I also remember that it happens to contain small, but meaningful, instances of sympathetic magic within the story that I appreciated as a practitioner looking in. This one has been made into a movie as well.
Cunning Folk by Adam Nevill is one of the more realistic looks at magicā€”including the uncanny side of itā€”that I've come across. It's still definitely a horror story, first and foremost, but there's an oomph to the ritual and magic described therein that a lot of other similar fiction lacksā€”even when the ritual act being described isn't necessarily accurate in terms of historicality or my personal experience of the Craft.
The White People by Arthur Machen is a Welsh short horror story from the turn of the century, which I think is worth including here. There are elements and aspects of the story that feel surprisingly real in terms of Gloaming initiation and the Gloaming Spiritsā€”though, of course, it takes creative liberties informed by the paranormal beliefs and trends of the time (1890s).
The Craft (1996) is a movie that I'm sure a lot of pagans have of nostalgia for in one way or another, myself included. I struggled with whether this movie should be here or in the Honorable Mention section, but I included it here in the end because a lot of the ways magic and ritual are presented in the film are accurate enough. I also think it did a fairly good job of capturing how it can feel to discover, revel in, and then become overwhelmed by magic. However, since it is a supernatural horror film, a lot of magic shown is portrayed more fantastically than the real thing, and there are aspects of the magic (rituals, entities, etc.) made up entirely for the sake of the story.
As implied above, there are also some pieces that, while largely inaccurate or too far into the realm of fantasy, still manage to succesfully capture some essence of realistic feeling magic in them. I will list those here as Honorable Mentions:
Practical Magic (1998) is another movie that I'm sure a lot of Pagans have nostalgia for in some way or another. I won't claim that it's a genuinely "accurate" representation of magicā€”and it certainly strays into outright fantasy at timesā€”but there are little things throughout the movie that managed to ring a bell for me, as someone who grew up with magic in my family. I know this was originally a book, but I actually haven't read that as of yet, so I can't speak to it.
Pan's Labyrinth (2006) is a movie is squarely in the fantasy-horror genre to me, but even still, I include it here as an honorable mention because a lot of the lore depicted is drawn from real lore, and the overall ambience it manged to evoke strongly reminds me of some of my own experiences with chthonic journeying.
The Good Witch franchise isn't one I have ever actually watched any part of before, but I include it here because, oddly enough, multiple practitioners have mentioned to me that they think the magic is surprisingly realistic for a Hallmark series. As I understand it, the main character is a sort of local Wise Woman who helps the folk in her little town using things like folk-knowledge, remarkable intuition, and an uncanny ability to seemingly sway people and circumstances. Since I haven't seen it myself, my take on it may be somewhat lacking, (which is why I listed it as an honorable mention), but based on the description, it actually sounds like it may be one of the more realistic interpretations of magic on this list.
I know this is a strange addition, as it's not exactly magic, per se, but much of how Stephen King writes about psychic abilities like clairvoyance and healing throughout his works manages to touch on something all too familiar for me. I think, sometimes, that he may have known someone with the Sight and/or the Touch in his real life, as it comes up a lot in one shape or another in his writing.
As I said, I'm sure there's stuff I'm missing, but this at least a serviceable overview. I encourage others to share any other media that they think deserves a mention, too!

Who is...Sam Guthrie | Cannonball? - A Reading Guide
Tumblr media
Sam Guthrie is an X-Men and Avengers affiliated mutant from Marvel Comics. Sam is the oldest of the nine Guthrie children and is the definition of parentification having dropped out of high school to work in the coal mines that killed his father (in either a mine accident or through black lung depending on your preferred retcon). Sam's powers would manifest during a mining accident and allowed him to blast through the rock to safety. Sam would then join the team he's most associated with, the New Mutants. Sam's story is one of overcoming adversities, determination, and of healing. Some of Sam's earlier stories show him being groomed by Lila Cheney and the adults in charge of his safety enabling her.
Sam is also excellent Appalachian representation and is one of the first Appalachian main characters to not be ashamed of being Appalachian while simultaneously not being based on hillbilly humor.
You'll find a reading list under the cut! The list will need to be posted in multiple parts due to length, subsequent parts will be added as reblogs.
Part 1 below!
Introduction and New Mutants Era
Sam's first team immediately after introduction was the original New Mutants (1983). Throughout this period Sam develops the close bonds he's known for, particularly with teammates Roberto Da Costa (Sunspot), Dani Moonstar (Mirage), and Rahne Sinclair (Wolfsbane). New Mutants was written by Chris Claremont and while wonderful, drops the ball in many places, one of which being the way that Sam's dialect is written and the sort of general understanding of Appalachia, as well as a refusal to acknowledge that Sam's relationship with Lila Cheney was based upon grooming. The issue that introduces Lila to Sam's story will have a red asterisk and a trigger warning next to it.
Marvel Graphic Novel (1981) #4 New Mutants (1983) #1-12 Marvel Team-Up (1972) # Annual 6 New Mutants (1983) #13-21 Rom (1982) #Annual 3 New Mutants (1983) # Annual 1 * (TW: Grooming) New Mutants (1983) #23-25 Marvel Team-Up (1972) #149 New Mutants (1983) #29 (Lila is in this issue) New Mutants (1983) #30-34 New Mutants Special Edition (1985) #1 Uncanny X-Men (1981) #201 (definitely not a necessary issue, but it's one that highlights that Sam IS smart, he's just really bad at technology) New Mutants (1983) #37 Firestar (1986) #2 New Mutants (1983) #38-40, 42-44, Annual 2, 45-51, Annual 3, 52 Fallen Angels (1987) #1 (this issue is a good look into Sam and Berto's relationship) New Mutants (1983) #53-66 Spellbound (1988) #4 (Lila's in this issue and you can see the way she almost treats Sam like an accessory) New Mutants (1983) #Annual 4A-B, 67-76, Annual 5A, 77-92, Annual 6A Wolverine: Rahne of Terra (not incredibly Sam focused and it's a bit..different, but what there is of Sam I like) New Mutants (1983) #93-100, Annual 7A
X-Force, X-Men, and X-Force Again
After the end of New Mutants, under the direction of Cable, Sam helped found the team, X-Force, and would be appointed Cable's second-in-command. While in New Mutants we got to see a Sam Guthrie who was coming into his powers, X-Force really gives us a glimpse of a Sam Guthrie who is starting to really apply those powers and who is starting to highlight why the character has come to be known as a powerhouse. During this period we see Sam go from a member of X-Force, to becoming a fully fledged X-Men, and then see him re-join X-Force until the team is disbanded. The change from X-Force to X-Men to X-Force are not represented in different sections as there is still overlap in Sam's character interactions and throughout his period on the X-Men, his former X-Force affiliation is an important factor that helps inform his choices and his outlook on situations, although I have tried to signify the changes with breaks in the text block.
New Warriors (1990) # Annual 1A Uncanny X-Men (1981) #Annual 15A X-Factor (1986) #Annual 6A X-Force (1991) #1-3 Spider-Man (1990) #16 X-Force (1991) #4-5 X-Factor (1986) #77 X-Force (1991) #Annual 1C, 6-15 X-Cutioner's Song Event (this links you to a reading list I made for the event) X-Men (1991) #17 New Warriors (1990) #31 X-Force (1991) #19-26, Annual 2, 27-29, 32-33 New Warriors (1990) #46 X-Force (1991) #34-37 Cable (1993) #15 X-Factor (1986) #106 X-Force (1991) #38 Excalibur (1988) #82 X-Force (1991) #39-45 Uncanny X-Men (1981) #323-325 Wolverine (1988) #93
Uncanny X-Men '95 (1995) #1 X-Men: Clan Destine (1996) #1 Wolverine (1998) #96 X-Force (1991) #48 X-Force and Cable '95 (1995) #1 X-Men vs. The Brood (1996) #1-2 X-Force (1991) #51 X-Men (1991) #48 Wolverine (1988) #99-100 Uncanny X-Men (1981) #332 Wolverine (1988) #101 Uncanny X-Men (1981) #334 X-Men (1991) #54 Onslaught: X-Men (1996) #1 Uncanny X-Men (1981) #335 Cable (1993) #36 Beast (1997) #1-3 X-Men (1991) #59 Uncanny X-Men (1981) #340 X-Men (1991) #60 Wolverine (1988) #111 Uncanny X-Men (1981) #341-342, Annual '97 The Incredible Hulk (1962) #455 X-Men (1991) #62-66 Wolverine (1988) #115-118 Uncanny X-Men (1981) #350 X-Men (1991) #70 New Mutants: Truth or Death (1997) #1-3 X-Men (1991) #71-72, 75-76 Uncanny X-Men (1981) #355 Alpha Flight (1997) #9 X-Men (1991) #77-78 Uncanny X-Men/Fantastic Four Annual '98 (1998) #1 X-Men (1991) #79

Love For Love's Sake Marketing vs Reality
I cannot get over how misleading the description of this show was compared to its actual execution of the first two episodes. This will be pretty spoiler-free if you are reading to decide whether to give the show a try!
The summary: "Twenty-nine-year-old Tae Myung Ha experiences a bewildering twist of fate when suddenly finds himself transported into a fictional online game where he inhabits the body of a ninteen-year-old character. Soon, Tae Myung Ha embarks on a quest within the virtual world to bring happiness to a character named Cha Yeo Woon. Despite his humble upbringing, Cha Yeo Woon has managed to excel in the national track and field championships, maintaining a remarkable reputation among his peers due to his handsome looks and athletic physique."
What I had taken away from that description that had made me wary: The importance of the age gap; lying to a character to fake affection in order to win a game.
None of the original description is a lie, but the emphasis is all wrong and it excludes some key details that make this show so good.
First: The character MyungHa is tasked to make happy is not just any character; he's the character in a novel MyungHa has just read, and he's the character that he says he identified with most (and who he was rooting for and was annnoyed got a sad storyline and ending). So when he's going up to YeoWoon expressing affection, it's genuine. He really does already know and like this guy. That's a HUGE difference for me, and it changes his mission from a Big Lie into a personal mission. The thing I like most about this show is the heart. The fact that MyungHa genuinely wanting YeoWoon to be happy is (it seems) the triggering event that transports him into the game, not a bewildering twist of fate but a direct response to his articulated wish, is a key part of that heart!
Second: Myung Ha is not out here as a 19-year-old trying to seduce YeoWoon, he wants him to be happy because he sees in YeoWoon similarities to who he was in his teens. The thing that has MyungHa most excited about being 19 again is his grandmother still being alive. The age gap is only a thing in how MyungHa is treating YeoWoon like he's a little kid, which annoys the hell out of YeoWoon because his character is only 1 year older.
Finally: YeoWoon has no friends. It seems true that he's famous on campus and that he has fans (e.g. KyungHoon's sister) but they don't approach him and it doesn't prevent people from hating him. This description makes him sound like a popular guy.
The description on MDL also includes this paragraph: "Cheon Sang Won hails from an affluent family and becomes emotionally entangled with Tae Myung Ha. His involvement adds complexity to the developing relationship between Tae Myung Ha and Cha Yeo Woon. Ahn Kyung Hoon, introverted and reserved, supports and assists Tae Myung Ha on his mission within the virtual world."
We haven't enough of SangWon to draw conclusions yet, but based on the failures of the original description to capture any of the the things I love about the show while highlighting issues that don't (to date) actually exist in the show, I'm going to reserve judgment and assume this is also misleading. It would be pretty antithetical to the very heart of the show that's being set up if Myung Ha, through his actions, caused a different character (SangWon) to become the sad second lead. I'll be really interested to see how this goes and how/if this show will address this issue.
TL;DR: The marketing material: Age gap romance with a Big Lie The actual show: video game isekai granting an earnest protagonist a chance to create a fix-it AU for his favourite sad side character.
Anyway. Glad the show turned out to be so off from the marketing material because this is way better!

Bad Wolf / The Parting of the Ways
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5/10. Bad Wolf is a cool name! For cool ppl! Itā€™s the seasonā€™s mystery! It slays! But The Parting of the Ways? That could be used for like, half of the finales in this show. Thatā€™s a generic name. Not a fan. It even has one more ā€œtheā€ than it ought to. Thatā€™s a tryhard name. (Rose and The Doc donā€™t even part ways for another season! Itā€™s a LIE!)
Army of Ghosts / Doomsday
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6/10. Army of Ghosts! Thatā€™s freaky! It catches my attention! Iā€™m interested, Mr. Davies, tell me more about that! Doomsday is also a generic name though. Like it could be used anywhere. It gets more points than S1 however because Doomsday is a very cool word and I like it a lot.

8/10. YES. I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THESE TITLES. Utopia? Thatā€™s a word that canā€™t be applied to many other episodes! Thatā€™s a memorable word! Thatā€™s a fun word! The Sound of Drums? What the hell is so significant about drums?? In a FINALE episode?! There must be something SCANDALOUS about the drums, tell me everything! (And they did! But this isnā€™t about what happens in the episode this is just how hard the titles fuck.) Last of the Time Lords??? Holy shit! That means weā€™re delving into that aspect of him specifically, and you canā€™t duplicate that easily! But more importantly, that sounds cool! Cool names, absolutely W from whoever named RTDā€™s stuff.
The Stolen Earth / Journeyā€™s End
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5.5/10. Same boat as S1, tbh. The Stolen Earth? Excellent, no notes. Journeyā€™s End sounds generic af though. But I gave it a half point lead because Journeyā€™s End has the Vibes more than The Parting of the Ways, lol.
The Pandorica Opens / The Big Bang
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8/10. Yea I see the vision Mr. Moffat, I see you. Love what youā€™ve done with the place btw. Like, neither title is generic! And both are super interesting! Look honestly I forget how to do commentary Iā€™m just one sleep deprived fan who likes Vibes they just slap OK
The Wedding of River Song
Tumblr media
9/10. Oh. Oh yes. Oh I am LOVING this. Nothing gets me going like seeing a wedding that is somehow the culmination of a high stakes season. Like, how is there a wedding there?! And. River Song is there? Do you promise? šŸ„ŗ
The Name of the Doctor / The Day of the Doctor / The Time of the Doctor
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
6/10. OK Iā€™m honestly not sure which ones are finales or not, but yā€™know what? The name matching is fun. I like that. That is good. But besides the first one, these are p generic episode names. Sorry.
Dark Water / Death in Heaven
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8/10. Dark Water is a p good episode name. Itā€™s not the most interesting, but I like it. BUT ***DEATH IN HEAVEN***?! Now THAT is a finale title! I have never SEEN such a title! THAT is an IMMACULATE title! SPLENDID!
Heaven Sent / Hell Bent
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10/10. The matching names? The rhyming? The low-key religious theming? The ominous nature? EXCELLENT. No notes Mr. Moffat. Great vibes.
World Enough and Time / The Doctor Falls
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9/10. I would give this striaght up 10/10 if I could figure out what ā€œWorld Enough and Timeā€ meant. The vibes are perfect but like. What does it mean šŸ˜ And The Doctor Falls??? OH MY ATTENTION HAS BEEN GRABBED BY THE THROAT DO GO ON PLSā€”
The Battle of Ranskoor av Kolos
Tumblr media
4/10. Kolos? What is this, PokĆ©mon XY? Anyways, I feel like this is just dialogue that would be said in passing in a sci-fi novel that everyone forgets. Sorry šŸ˜ž
Ascension of the Cybermen / The Timeless Children
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7/10. Cybermen are OK. Itā€™s a fine title, I have nothing against it. The Timeless Children??? The vibes are just SPLENDID here. Especially because itā€™s a Bad Wolf situation where itā€™s like ā€œhey wait a fucking minute Iā€™ve heard that somewhere elseā€”ā€ Good stuff! W for Chris.
Chapter Six: The Vanquishers
Tumblr media
6.5/10. Adding chapter to the title does make it automatically cooler, so thatā€™s a bonus half point right there. Otherwise, itā€™s neat. Like itā€™s good. The vibes are fine and I like them, but not THAT fine, yā€™know?
The Legend of Ruby Sunday / Empire of Death
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7/10. Look, even if itā€™s not generic, anything with ā€œdeathā€ in the title *feels* generic. The Legend of Ruby Sunday still saves this tho, because I am INTERESTED, girl. TELL ME EVERYTHING
In conclusion, episode titles peaked with Capaldi.

Happy Birthday to the actor Tony Curran born 13th December 1969 in Glasgow.
Tony took to acting while still in his teens, he recalls the days in the Scottish Youth Theatre with Gerard Butler. Young Anthony Curran went on to attend the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama before gaining notoriety with a prominent role on the BBC series This Life. He would go on to make a name for himself in movies with a sci-fi/fantasy bent, like The 13th Warrior, Blade II, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Beowulf, of his small screen credits, our old favourite Taggart returns after not appearing on Kenneth Cranhamā€™s CV yesterday!
Curran has made a name for himself in over the Atlantic in a number of US shows which include, Numb3rs, Medium, 24, Sons of Anarchy and Elementary. His most notable appearances over here have been in the ITV series Ultimate Force, Dr Who, as Vincent van Gogh , and more recently in the E4/Netflix original series Crazyhead.
Tony appeared in the 2018 Netflix film Outlaw King about Robert the Bruce and the Wars of Scottish Independence, where he played the part of Aonghus Ɠg of Islay, ( Angus Macdonald) chief of Clann Domhnaill. Back over in the states he has recently been in Ray Donovan, which is a great series series and few episodes of the CBS show SEAL Team. He also turned up in the mini series, Your Honor, which also stars the excellent US actor Brian Cranston of Breaking Bad fame, itā€™s great hearing Scottish accents in US shows, donā€™t you think?
Tony is another guy I follow on twitter, the guy has a heart of gold, I remember he tweeted ā€œMe and my lass woke up this morning temperatures dropping compelled to help our homeless, loaded up some blankets pillows clothes, sweaters jackets, Iā€™m sure we all have stuff we can donate, it all helps.ā€ He was then out on the streets handing them out to the homeless, Tony was involved in a charity weekender with all funds raised going to St Maryā€™s & St Alphonsus and the great community work they do. He has in the past played charity football matches in Glasgow.
In the past couple of years Tony has been playing Despero in the Super Hero series The Flash, Tony has also appeared in the US movie, Two Deaths of Henry Baker where he plays a town Sheriff, this year he appeared in the US crime series The Calling, the show has some good reviews on IMDB with a 7.1/10 rating, and in an episode of the US show For All Mankind
Last year Tony appeared in a homegrown project. The two part ā€œseriesā€, Mayflies is set in a Scotland and Manchester in the 80ā€²s Martin Compston co-stars along with new Shetland star Ashley Jensen, it is on BBC1 on December 28th. The show is based on a novel by Scottish author Andrew O'Hagan's book of the same name. It tells the story of Jimmy (Compston) and Tully (Curran) who ignite an ā€œunforgettable friendshipā€ defined by music, films and their shared rebellious spirit in a small Scottish town in the 1980s. if you haven't seen it, please look it up, and keep the hankies close by.
In the past couple of years Tony has appeared in a couple of US series, an unexpected second season of Your Honor and Secret Invasion.
On fame Tony commented;
"I've been lucky. I don't for a minute take for granted the good fortune I have had. You don't like to get ideas above your station, especially a boy from the south side of Glasgow."

You seem a great chengqing shipper, could you please suggest me some good fanfictions about them? (please not misila's fics. I like enough their chengqing but they wrote in an handful of comments 'jc is the worst' and that's a deal-breaker for me)
Hi, of course! (As requested, I didn't include misila's fics, though honestly I wouldn't take that to heart, are you sure you don't misremember or they weren't 'he's the worst (affectionate)' kind of comments? misila is great with Jiang Cheng, one of the authors I trust the most to handle him well!)
Now, off the top of my head, some one-shots:
A Show of Good Faith by Artemis1000 - basically Wen Qing and Wei Wuxian ask Jiang Cheng for help instead of fleeing to the Burial Mounds, and once things settle down a little Wen Qing and Jiang Cheng have a moment together;
display my heart for you to see by Sour_Idealist - post-canon, there's something so sweet and so excruciating about this one, Wen Qing was alive all along and Jiang Cheng is touch-starved as hell;
Prescription by sugar_shoal - aka the one where the Wen remnants end up in Lotus Pier and Jiang Cheng and Wen Qing nag each other into self-care;
losing all my good years (to the shallow water) by Tavina - to Wen Qing's horror and surprise Jiang Cheng takes the huge risk of claiming her and the Wen remnants and Wei Wuxian, and there's something very different about him;
swaying forward by andreacsenge - which I already recced in the past, but I mean, Jiang Cheng as a starving vampire and Wen Qing deciding to step in and take care of that? Never gets old;
Doctor's Appointment by allllllllthethings - where Wen Qing does more mad science on Jiang Cheng (she even gets him pregnant) and they're both very into it;
Already On It by rhysiana - modern AU, because Wen Qing deserves to have someone handle a problem for her for once;
grieving what you never had by marquisguyun - Wen Qing's feelings after giving the comb back to Jiang Cheng;
you and I are a story that never gets told by doumekiss - this one with female!Jiang Cheng, encapsulates very well their dynamic during the Cloud Recesses arc
Now, a couple of longfics (they're ongoing, but almost completed):
Girl on fire by WowWowWow333 - where Wen Qing survives and ends up in Lotus Pier during the missing years, her dynamic with Jiang Cheng is delightfully snappy (it's novel verse, so they have no prior relationship);
something worth doing by twigofwillow - where Jiang Cheng goes to the Burial Mounds with a proposal for the Wen remnants
And finally, the challengers series by cerusee, where after everything Jiang Cheng finds out Wen Qing is still alive, is also excellent!
I hope you enjoy! Let me know if you want more (or if you want more of a specific kind of ChengQing fics, like more modern AUs, for example, or more fics based on the novel...)

DRAMA REVIEW | Lovely Runner (2024)
Tumblr media
Lovely Runner it's undoubtedly one of the best dramas of 2024.
It has all the elements that make a drama a mega hit: comedy, romance, time travel, well written characters (both leads and supporting ones) and an engaging plot line that never bores you. Starring Kim Hye Yoon and Byeon Woo Seok, adapted from the web novel The Best of Tomorrow by screenwriter Lee Shi Eun and directed by Yoon Jong Ho and Kim Tae Yub, the Lovely Runner team achieved a perfect execution in front and behind the camera.
I think the true star of this drama it's the writing and on this I can't commend Lee Si Eun enough. I had already seen her potential in dramas like True Beauty but here she really manages to shine through a well crafted, smart and cohesive story with no loose ends. I'm incredibly impressed by her talent.
The writing was perfectly complemented by the directors's outstanding work in leading a film crew that was on every detail of each part of the story, in each timeline, never missing a beat. Always delivering their A+++ game. But there was also great work done from the directors part in helping the actors get the comedic timing exactly right, the more emotional scenes to deliver and the team work among cast and crew to be flawless.
Lovely Runner might be a big hit now, but it's actually a sleeper hit. The lack of promotion this drama had was embarrassing and if it wasn't for the devoted fans,Ā studio executives would have never realized they had a gem in their hands. So, it's not only a great drama with a super fandom that really fought for this story, it's also becoming yet another prime example in the list of films and tv that achieved all of it by themselves because artists delivered nothing short of excellence.
On this point I can't ignore the incredible performances given by the entire cast. Kim Hye Yoon and Byeon Woo Seok are definitely the standouts, they stole the show, this is their story and the actors chemistry it's electrifying. But the way supportive actors would show up in a scene and push the story forward in a coherent way and even make it better, it's wild to me. The chemistry this cast had it's a rare feat for an ensamble cast and how they managed to transition seamlessly through different phases of their characters's lives and relationships when events, in each timeline, were changing because of the things our leads did they still remain truthful. So, not only the leads are well developed in this drama but also every single character that shows up, no matter how small the role is.
The best example of this it's actor Heo Hyeong-Gyu who has been working for sixteen years, playing very minor characters, finally having a breakthrough in the industry because of his role in this drama. And while his presence was prominent and important to the story, he barely had lines. So his entire performance is mainly based on micro-expressions or physical stunts.
I also fully expect the actors like Song Geon-Hee, Lee Seung-Hyub, Song Ji-Ho or Seo Hye-won to receive a lot of what korean entertainment industry calls "love calls" aka commercials, dramas and films, among other things.
Experiencing watching Lovely Runner alongside the fandom, waiting every week for a new episode, it's a big part of what made this drama so good. Healthy and good loving fun people, clowning, poking fun at our faves and crying at heartbreak. It's been a long time since I have been able to engage in this way with other fans and I am thankful for them, the cast and crew for all these amazing weeks of fun.

Officer Dunn -FNAF Alternate Universe
@pudim-16-world asked " How does Dunn possess Glamrock Freddy in this AU?"
This was a really good question and one I wanted to tackle in semi-comic form. The version of events that lead to Officer Dunn possessing Glamrock Freddy are ones I have put my own twist on based loosely on the FNAF novel The Silver Eyes by Kira Breed-Wrisley and Scott Cawthon.
In my opinion Officer Dunn was a character that had a lot of potential and had an excellent base for true and meaningful motives that could have driven him and the FNAF lore forwards.
Tumblr media
Iā€™ll start with some background. Officer Robert ā€˜Bobbyā€™ Dunn was new to the department in Hurricane, Utah. At the start of his career he had taken on a number of cold cases. One of which being Hurricane Utahā€™s most infamous, the disappearances of 5 children at local pizzeria, Freddy Fazbearā€™s.
Bobby dug into the evidence surrounding the events that transpired. He began investigating further, which led him to the doorstep of the then closed building that had once been operating as the restaurant in question. He made multiple trips to Freddy Fazbearā€™s and was able to uncover old files, blueprints of the building among other documents. All of which aided in fleshing out missing details from the original report.
The chief of police found out about Bobbyā€™s ventures and advised against his continued digging. He was worried for his officerā€™s safety in a building that was legally condemned by the city. Despite this however Dunn returned to the restaurant, feeling he needed to take one last look.
Tumblr media
It was raining hard the night Officer Dunn arrived at the rundown establishment. Upon going inside he had the strangest feeling that he was being watched. Bobby made his way to the back office, in the hopes of retrieving files that may have been left behind. Employee records, spreadsheets, checkbooks, anything.
The next thing he knew his throat felt like it was burning and he couldn't breathe. The last thing he sawā€¦was a rabbit. Decrepit and laughing wildly as it loomed over him while he bled out on the dirty checkered floor. Bobbyā€™s world went darkā€¦ The moment that he was self aware he found himself standing in that office. With no concept of how much time had passed or- what happened to him. Thinking it had all been a strange dream he attempted to leave but each time he tried he would wind up right back where he startedā€¦ in the office.
Bobby soon met them. The little ones. The children who had gone missing. First there was oneā€¦the bravest. Then there were two. Soon he was in the presence of more.
They were scared...Bobby realized almost like he had forgotten- that they were the reason he had come here. Any relief Bobby had felt by finding them evaporated when he realized they were like him. Goneā€¦just not entirely.
Over time Bobby gained their trust, learned their names and heard their stories.
Tumblr media
Each child had met the same golden rabbit dressed in purple who lured them away from their families and led them to their end. Bobby promised them that no matter what happenedā€¦ he would protect them. He would not leave them and that somehowā€¦he would see justice carried out.
They stuck together from that day forward, becoming some version of a family. Bobby had always wanted children and they needed him. The officer took it upon himself to ensure nothing happened to any of them. The children showed him the suits that their bodies had been hidden inside of. One of themā€¦ the bravest, had excitedly shown how he could manipulate the robot itself. Making it talk and do exactly as he wanted rather than whatever it had been programmed to do.
The Animatronics were their safe space, the item they felt secure to hide away in. Bobby, having not been stuffed into a suit at his end, had the freedom to move about where he saw fitā€¦on an endless security patrol. After all, he had no reason to hide.
The case files that Bobby had looked into, stated that five children had gone missing from the Pizzeria but he had only met four. Gabriel who resided within Bonnie, Susie who remained within Chica, Fritz who hid inside of Foxy and Cassidy who took up residence inside Freddy. Cassidy was the only child who ever hid from Bobby, wanting nothing to do with him. She was aloof and untrusting. Angry and spiteful. She had died on her birthday and she definitely asserted herself to be the ringleader of the others at least for a time.
Tumblr media
At first Cassidy would use the Freddy suit like the others but eventually she seemed to vanish entirely. Losing interest in the suit like a child outgrowing a toy. They all looked for her but never came back to them. It almost seemed as though she did not want to be found.
Bobby had thought maybe she hadā€¦passed on. Moved on, perhaps found peace? At least that is always what he had hoped was true. Though he was not entirely sure, sometimes he thought he could still hear her. Eventually with her absence persisting and the children wishing him to stay closer to them Bobby begain to occupy the Freddy Animatronic.
He has been inside every sense. Every rendition the mascot has undertaken , every upgrade. It's still him. Hiding like the rest of them. In plain sight but unseen.
Tumblr media
Over the past forty years Dunn was able to put together the full story. Which quickly became stranger than fiction .
One of the founders of Fazbear Entertainment, William Afton, was responsible for the murder and disappearance of the children, Officer Dunn and countless others who had worked for the company. He was tried and acquitted of all chargesā€¦found not guilty by the courts due to the lack of evidence. Meaning he got away with it. He got away with all the lives he stole.
The justice system failedā€¦but karma seemed to come back around for Afton. In a fitting twist of fate that man who had dismembered and stuffed the bodies of small children into the suits of animatronics met his end inside of one. He diedā€¦but he didnā€™t leave. He remained inside that crumpled bunny suit until Bobby walked into that office. Giving him a new victim.
William Aftonā€™s soul lives onā€¦free from meeting the justice for his actions and free to continue his twisted experiments within the catacombs of the pizzaplex. The childrenā€™s souls can not truly be at rest until he is gone for good and Officer Dunn has sworn to put an end to this cycle once and for all. Protecting everyone to the best of his ability, as he swore to do when he first donned the badge.

ALRIGHT, IT'S TIME!
THE SECOND RYUKI-AND-BLADE-ACCOMPANYING ANIME POLL IS NOW HERE!!!
SO, MEET YOUR CHALLENGERS!
AJIN Demi-Human
youtube
We start with a dark horror and possibly scifi about ethics in science, immortality, and an outlaw fugitive alien plot as a boy finds himself part of a group of immortals declared legally inhuman. While I have some misgivings about Oh No I Was Secretly A Creature All Along plots, I do fucking love horror and thereā€™s a lot of ways for those plots to hit hard in the trans and gay and autism organs and be really important!!!!
Dimension W
youtube
The New Tesla Energy Corporation has monopolized the fourth dimension and the coils that connect to it. A duo of bounty hunters, one human and one robot, make money via repossessing illegal coils and seek out the answer to the mysteries within the dimension. I really wanna watch this one for a few reasons, the primary one of which is 'there are multiple fat women'. It seems to have freaks and weirdos and fun times, and its comedy is emphasized more than most of the other ones on this list so it might give some needed levity!
Kyoukai no Kanata
youtube
A bumbling monster hunter with blood powers meets an immortal via trying to shank him and ends up in an arrangement where she'll keep trying to kill him to boost her confidence while hunting monsters in what I hope is a monster-of-a-week show that came highly recommended by a friend as her favorite anime, or one of her favorites, so i have high hopes! Script's by the hibike euphonium guy and the power system seems quite interesting!
Air
youtube
A puppeteer (if heā€™s as good as Sakon will remain to be seen) stops his Road Trip To Meet A Golden Sun Jupiter Summon to stay for a bit in a town and, as happens to anyone who stops for too long, gets attached to the place and also meets a girl who might be said jupiteresque being. My friend informs me that it's gorgeous, sounds amazing (so I'll make sure to get clips), and has "nice sad vibes"!!! And itā€™sā€¦listed in a ā€œprovincial horrorā€ listingā€¦ hoho
Heike Monogatari
youtube
A child who can see ghosts and the future walks tirelessly through the tragedy of the war between the Taira and Minamoto families before the dawn of the first shogunate. It's wildly beloved by a friend of mine, and also centers a historical event i know some but not all about and definitely need to know more about the Taira side of. Seems like a beautiful drama, one I could lose my heart over.
SSSS Gridman
youtube
Digital kaiju! Digital hero! Digital amnesia! A monster of the week show about an unknown amnesiac summoning and merging with Hyper Agent Gridman to fight digital, possibly virtual monsters while making friends(?) in the real world! It's the one thing Tsubaraya Productions has that isn't Ultraman, and I expect some tokusatsu vibes from it along with the mecha stuff, i've also heard it has gay girl megatron??
Akudama Drive
youtube
It's a prison break and crime story set in a tech dystopia, starring a scene girl shoplifter, and featuring a bevvy of unpersoned convicts in what seems like an excellent ensemble clusterfuck!!! The Danganronpa crew made this thing! It's also beloved by a friend of mine, and I've heard it'll be a generally excellent tragedy of a time
Canaan
youtube
A reporter gets saved from assassins by a woman she might do yuri with, and the summaries Iā€™ve found seem to imply a plot about terrorism and mystery! Itā€™s a Type-Moon work that isn't part of the fate, tsukihime, OR melty universes! It might still have magecraft, but it's tagged sci-fi too, and a type moon take on scifi sounds interesting... itā€™s also based on. *checks wikipedia* aā€¦perfect-Famitsu-score visual novel for the Nintendo Wii. So I might need to dig out some old hardware to watch this thing. For funā€™s sake!
Killing Bites
youtube
A guy unintentionally becomes the underground wrestling promoter of a ?werewolf? Woman who murders his friends and wins him a shitload of money. The end goal? According to the summary, control of the economy!!! This was recommended as garbage and good lord I need garbage so much good god I need to put some trash inside of me.
