"Good Omens": A Nice and (Probably Not) Accurate Evaluation on an Ineffable Relationship
Season 2 of "Good Omens" has finally been released and while the ending was certainly shocking, it provided some interesting context about the relationship of our ineffable pair.
I imagine many were quite outraged at Aziraphale's decision to go to Heaven, but this is also the same Aziraphale who was concerned about how "[his] side" would react to him staying at Crowley's place (and this was after being punched in the gut by the Archangels). Whenever Crowley called onto him for assistance, he had to emphasize how it wouldn't affect Aziraphale's relationship with his respective head office and while the latter certainly wasn't fond of the idea of Armageddon, his response usually involved trying convince his superiors. I find that he fears Heaven's wrath more than anything and that his desire for validation stems from that fear. Someone once told me that Aziraphale's relationship with Heaven is a reflection of Nina's relationship with her former abusive partner, the difference being she's starting to get out while he's still letting them live rent free in his head. One instance of this was when the Archangels came to his bookshop to discuss the matter of Gabriel's disappearance. When one of them suggested discussing the matter inside, he invited them in an instant, in contrast to Crowley's adamant refusal to let Shax inside when she was harassing him about the same subject. Crowley might be a Demon, but he's always done things his own way while Aziraphale remained the ever obedient Angel. As Crowley stated, Heaven and Hell are both toxic entities, but while Hell tends to express it in a more straightforward manner, Heaven uses its pure and shining example as a means of gaslighting its subjects into submission. I don't doubt that Aziraphale's love for Crowley is genuine, but there are some things that the Angel has to figure out on his own. I did also notice that Aziraphale had a strange reaction to Crowley mentioning Alpha Centauri and when he stated that he was bored of living in his car in the finale. I can't quite place it, but he seemed quite concerned at the idea. I suspect that Aziraphale might be thinking that the Demon might have alternative plans to go off on his own because, despite Crowley's claims about the two relying on each other, Crowley has always given off an air of an independent spirit, and as Aziraphale stated "[he] goes too fast for [him]". That said, I do think the Metatron must have done something to influence his decision because regardless of how he ended things with Crowley, he's far too protective of his bookshop to just leave it to Muriel and he did flash a strange smile during the end credits of the final episode.
Crowley is a different story. He certainly doesn't need Heaven or Hell's validation to thrive, but, as Maggie and Nina stated, there is a serious lack of communication between him and Aziraphale. Many of their discussions on morality tend to be more philosophical than personal, so neither side is aware of the other's emotional investment in the matter such as the idea of body snatching or the flooding that prompted Noah's Ark. In addition, throughout "Hard Times" (Season 1, Episode 3), whenever Crowley has suggested bending the rules to Aziraphale, the latter was often concerned about Hell destroying Crowley if the deception were to be discovered, but never the reverse which suggests that Crowley severely underestimates Heaven's hold on Aziraphale. Crowley also doesn't go into much detail about the trauma he experienced when he fell, granted it's something of a personal matter, but Aziraphale has remained steadfastly loyal to Heaven throughout most of season 1 and old habits can be hard to break. A massive shift in perspective might have done him some good and helped him to understand why Crowley was so disgusted at the Metatron's offer to make him an angel again. Crowley does not even showcase how emotionally affected he was by Gabriel's attitude towards his beloved Angel in the season 1 finale, until he confronts Gabriel/Jim, as opposed to sharing these feelings with his Angel. It is also worth noting that Crowley's "apologies" aren't exactly coming from a place of genuine regret but rather a desperate attempt to keep his Angel at his side: In season 1, he apologizes to Aziraphale because Hell learned that he deceived them about Warlock and wanted to run away with Aziraphale, and in season 2, he returns to apologize about the Gabriel matter not because he thinks he was wrong but because he found out about the "extreme sanctions" (a fact that he never seemed to disclose to Aziraphale), even his kiss could be interpreted as an act of desperation because that's how badly he wants to be with Aziraphale. I do also find that Crowley has a tendency to enable some of his beloved Angel's bad habits. As Aziraphale stated, Crowley seems to find joy in rescuing him, but in doing so he inadvertently stunts the Angel's growth. For instance, when Crowley was about to evacuate the humans, he wouldn't even entertain Aziraphale's attempt at a suggestion. The Angel may overestimate his own capabilities at times, but I think Crowley also severely underestimates them, hence his need to be overprotective. I don't think Crowley views him as completely helpless, however, by trying so hard to shield him from he prevents Aziraphale from fully realizing the situation he's in.
Crowley tends keep to his true feelings hidden beneath those dark tinted sunglasses while Aziraphale has spent too much time wearing rose colored glasses. Should season 3 come to fruition, I would imagine that the show will delve a little more into their personal history as individuals instead of a pair and maybe they'll finally be able to talk about how they really feel. We can only wait and see.
What do you think?
Let me know your thoughts and feel free to offer any suggestions for future posts.
Best wishes to Neil Gaiman and the rest of the "Good Omens" production team.

Me: I shouldn't disturb Neil Gaiman. I shouldn't send an ask unless I really have no way of getting the information otherwise. I'll check old interviews and all the articles that vaguely mention the subject. Of course it goes without saying that I'll read though the FAQ in its entirety. Only then, will I send an ask. However, I'd be very polite and praise his work, as anyone would. I'd also keep it short, because I don't want to waste his time. But I'd keep it very very respectful. I'd be sending a message to a very talented, amazing author that deals with god knows how many like me. Or I'd just stay in the dark and not send him an ask. Yeah, I'll do that.
