I was staring at some artwork on pinterest and I was thinking, it's interesting that the ASOIAF only pays attention to Aegon, Rhaenys, and Visenya as the Conquerers when there was technically FOUR Conquerers. Do you have any headcanons about the "Fab Four" after Westeros began to settle down? How do you think Orys got brought in on the plan to take Westeros? My favorite question is it's likely they believed Orys was their half brother - so why not try to give him a dragon?
I'd assume that the reason why he's not listed as one of Thee Conquerors is a) not technically being an acknowledged member of the family, only a rumored bastard and b) I think he was the only one of the core four that didn't have command over a section of the forces of the Conquest (Rhaenys appears to have had the nominal command of forces in the Stormlands, Visenya had command of the forces sieging the Vale, and Aegon was of course the commander of the force he had everywhere else, whereas Orys fought under Aegon in the first battle, and then under Rhaenys in the taking of Storm's End and defeating the Durrandons). There's also the fact that, despite being (ostensibly) family, Orys wasn't necessarily raised alongside Visenya and Aegon and Rhaenys, but more likely with his mother, and was a daytime companion for Aegon during his youth, whereas the three full-blooded siblings were literally all living in the same place morning, noon, and night (not to mention all the interconnectedness when you add in the marriage factor, which Orys wasn't a part of).
How Orys got brought into the plan to invade Westeros likely depends on which version of the story you go with. If you go with the official version that Aegon started seriously thinking of conquering Westeros after Argilac mutilated his envoy in response to Aegon offering Orys for Argella's hand, then Orys was likely in it from the beginning, since Aegon was offering to have him get married while spurning a marriage offer for himself, and would have been told that Aegon's offer was refused, especially in the manner that it was. If you think that Aegon was already planning an invasion and Argilac's rudeness was just a pretext, Orys was likely brought in once Aegon had finished the Painted Table and gotten the support of his sisters in the venture and was now starting to think logistics, given that Orys was already known as a puissant warrior and obvious Aegon's closest friend and one of the most trusted people in his life. If you subscribe more to the recent revelation that Aegon might have been a dragondreamer whose visions of the Long Night were what motivated his desire to unify Westeros, then Orys might have even been brought in before there was even a plan for invasion. Cuz honestly, if I was having nightmares about ice zombies literally running over the entire world but had no way to figure out when it was even supposed to happen, just that these visions were constant and felt too real to just be dreams, I would probably confide in my friends, and considering Orys was Aegon's only real friend, it's not unreasonable to think of a young Aegon, haunted by the future, confiding his sense of foreboding that something is about to happen to Orys if only just to let it out. After that, it's a simple matter of Aegon bringing him into the fold of people who get the honesty of his motivations once he starts planning the Conquest.
I like to think, in the years between the Conquest and the First Dornish War (my beloathed), that Orys actually spent a lot of time with Visenya and Rhaenys. We know that Aegon spent a lot of time on various different progresses throughout the realm in the early years, in order to make sure he didn't have any blind spots about the different cultures of Westeros, and that, while he was ultimately in charge, the day-to-day governance of the country was left to his sisters. And given that Orys was the Hand of the King, and therefore also in charge of a lot of governance affairs, I think that meant a lot of time was spent between the three of them just sorting stuff out. I also think he deliberately sought out Rhaenys when dealing with Stormlands related issues, even above Aegon, due to their time together attempting to defeat the Durrandons and the shared bond from that time and their knowledge of the landscape that they share together that Aegon and Visenya don't. I think Orys was one of the people most vocally offended by rumors of Rhaenys's infidelity, seeing as a slight against both Aegon and Rhaenys (painting Rhaenys as a slut and Aegon as a weak-willed cuckold), even while Aegon and Rhaenys didn't deign to respond to those rumors in any capacity themselves. I think it ties into a view I have where, despite him being the youngest in my opinion, he was very protective of all of his siblings, even Visenya who I don't believe he was the closest to, and I think it tied a lot into his identity and why he fell so far when he was mutilated in the First Dornish War. After all, without a hand he's not only unable to be Hand of the King, he can't raise a sword to defend his family, so then literally what is he for, what is the point of him? I also think they hung out as much as they could, all of them. I think that, whenever they were all four of them in one place, there was at least a once a week dinner, not only just to debrief on politics and rule stuff, but also just to be together and be a family. I think he and Aegon still hung out a lot one-on-one, that when Orys did want a sparring partner (before he lost his hand) and Aegon was free, he went to Aegon first, and that Aegon probably acquiesced more than he refused, in spite of his noted refusal to enter tourneys or recreational combat. Honestly, I think that Orys was the quintessential version of what people think a Baratheon is, basically Robert if he weren't a dogshit person, big and boisterous and loud and fun and filled with energy, and I think it helped him meld seamlessly with his family (as a companion to gentle and fun-loving Rhaenys, as a foil and drawing-out friend to reserved and introverted Aegon, even giving him a good dynamic with the more stern Visenya). I also think, if circumstances hadn't gotten in the way, he would have been the best uncle, would have loved carrying the kids around on his shoulders, teaching the boys all he knew about swordcraft and playfighting with them, exaggeratedly bowing and scraping to the girls if Aegon had ever had any daughters. While I don't think he was the glue of the family (that's Rhaenys) I think he was a lighter presence that helped with three very intense people with a lot riding on their shoulders and their bloodline, and a small part of why they were at their best in between the end of the Conquest and the First Dornish War, before everything went wrong.
As to why Orys was never given a dragon, I think it likely came from a mix of factors. Not every Targaryen was a dragonrider, even when they were at their peak, so it's possible that Orys just didn't attempt it, either because he never felt the need or had an aversion somehow (maybe he had a fear of heights, who knows). We also don't know how many adult dragons were available during their youths, other than Balerion and Meraxes and Vhagar, so it's possible there just weren't any dragons available for him after his three siblings had claimed their's, or if there were dragons, they were still young hatchlings and by the time they were grown, he'd just gotten more used to life without them. It's also important to know that dragons aren't things that can be given - they're sentient creatures, incredibly intelligent and incredibly temperamental. Part of claiming a dragon is not just on the rider, but also on the dragon, on the dragon accepting the bond and returning it in kind (as seen with Aemond Targaryen and Vhagar later). For all we know, Orys could have tried to claim a dragon, but the dragon rejected him, and he either kept trying and failing or he just never tried again. We don't know because an attempt by a bastard to do something that didn't even succeed, well before any of these people were famous enough to have dedicated chronicles, likely wouldn't have been recorded, and word of mouth would have been lost relatively soon afterwards. So it could have been attempted and just never written down, or just not attempted at all for a host of reasons.

I have finally finished 2.4 and oh my GOD watching Dan Heng be so protective of his friends nearly killed me, MY HEART.
And yes, the cutscene where he pushes the trailblazer out of the way and even cushions their fall with his own body, but I mean even before that! When he was already trying to protect them and March 7th from Feixiao and Lingsha!!
Because if you watch the dango trio throughout the main quest, you'll notice that they often position themselves in the same way, which is a detail that makes me super happy that Hoyo thought to include- when the three of them aren't evenly spaced, March 7th and the trailblazer tend to gravitate towards each other and stand very close together, frequently side-by-side. And by comparison, Dan Heng usually stands slightly away, and often even slightly behind them, where he can pull on their leashes to wrangle them keep an eye on them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is probably a habit learned through experience, since March 7th said during Belobog she is the "queen of unannounced disappearances" fjdksajfkldjsak
And of course at least a little bit of it is just done for like, aesthetic purposes. It's a video game. Things have to look nice for the player. The trailblazer and Dan Heng are the same height, March 7th is a bit shorter, and Yanqing is even smaller. It makes sense to have the trailblazer and Dan Heng stand on the ends, with March 7th and Yanqing in the middle, it just looks nicer and more balanced that way. But still! Even when they're accommodating for Yanqing in this quest, they still all arrange themselves the same way, almost every time!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But this changes after Dan Heng and Yanqing become suspicious of the visitors from the Yaoqing.
The dango trio still stand around relaxed and in their usual manner when they go to the artisanship delve and meet Skott,

but Dan Heng takes notice of Lingsha when she arrives, and he and Yanqing mentioned her specifically when discussing their worries.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yanqing worrying so much about Jing Yuan got me right in the heart, he's such a good boy WEH
And when the four of them go out to the alchemy delve to meet Lingsha for tea, the pattern breaks. Suddenly Dan Heng is standing right up front, and even walks in and enters the scene before March 7th and the trailblazer to get to Lingsha before them. He stays a step in front of them the whole time, too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then when Dan Heng and the trailblazer have to go be interrogated by Feixiao! The same deal! Dan Heng walks in ahead of them and stays in front of them! Noticeably so! Enough that even Feixiao takes note and voices it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dan Heng is so so fiercely protective of his companions, and I love it, I adore hyper vigilance in the wake of trauma like this, I'm so excited to see what else he does in 2.5, I hope we either get to see him get fucked up or the trailblazer gets fucked up in his place, I wanna see them run through the meat grinder!!!
