davey jacobs keyed his ex's car. davey jacobs texts that ex begging for them to come back every once in a while. davey gets really drunk those nights. davey jacobs is unhealthy. don't let the proper academic shell fool you. davey jacobs is a mess. can davey jacobs understand complex nuances in literature? can he do university-level physics? yes. davey jacobs is smart, but he's certainly not much else, at least in his own eyes.

It is one week until Newsies London closes in Wembley, and I got to see it again the other day, so I want to talk about Ryan Kopel and his beautiful portrayal of Davey Jacobs one more time.
I love how Ryan portrays Davey to be autistic. Ryan has said that he plays Davey in a way that exemplifies his quirks, and it really works in this production. It’s what I am going to miss the most. I’ve never felt more seen.
As an autistic person myself, I have always headcanoned Davey as being autistic – in every format of Newsies previously. Ben Fankhauser’s Davey was always autistic-coded to me – his portrayal was one of my favourites. And I was nervous about seeing another actor take on a character that means so much to me ... but Ryan took Davey and made him even more autistic and I am so, so grateful and in awe of his talent.
Let’s talk about Davey Jacobs and his autistic traits, as portrayed by Ryan Kopel in West Endsies:
- Stimming:
Davey is stimming the WHOLE SHOW. And that’s not an exaggeration. He is shown to bounce on his toes, he is constantly fidgeting with his fingers (and standing with those stereotypical t-rex arms) and he runs his hands along his newsie bag, and he does a few little spins when he's excited, and he jumps up and down at one point.
- Difficulty with social interaction:
From the first moment that Davey is on stage, he is shown to be incredibly uncomfortable talking to other people. He is shown to stammer over his thoughts and struggles to coherently converse with the other characters on the stage. He is portrayed as someone that is reluctant to speak, and he stutters and rambles and struggles to maintain eye contact, looking down at his fidgeting hands a lot. Ben Fankhauser made Davey more confident in his ability to share his thoughts, but Ryan’s Davey struggles - both internally and externally - with this.
He is also shown to have a one track mind in conversations. He struggles to see why Jack is having doubts after the rally because he, personally, thinks it was a success. Davey is bouncing around and his tone is so light and he is so confused by Jack's doubts. It's so autistic. It's so relatable.
- Relationship with physical contact:
Davey is shown to struggle when people suddenly touch him, he flinches and wipes the touch away whenever he is uncomfortable. BUT he initiates touch with those that he trusts. He's so physical with Les, constantly holding him and giving him reassurance through taps. He is shown to hug Jack and he hugs Crutchie and it's nice to see.
- Strong moral compass:
Unlike Ben Fankauser’s Davey (who I LOVE), Ryan’s Davey is shown to be more reluctant to join in on the strike – he is a lot more sheltered, and is completely isolated on one side of the stage in that scene. Davey looks down to his feet and looks to be at war with himself. He looks completely defeated when Jack asks if his father would be in the mess he was in if he had a union, because he knows that Jack – this boy that he has just met – is right. But he is so conflicted because he knows that this is going to be difficult, and he’s so worried and so anxious and so questioning about what the right thing is. It’s such a minor part of the show, but it’s there and I love it.
- Autistic joy:
I don’t know how else to word this but the way that we see Davey unmask throughout the play makes me so smiley. We see him go from this uncomfortable, awkward, masked version of himself in the beginning to someone that genuinely feels accepted and like he has a place in this strike and in the Newsie family. The excitement in his voice when he is talking to Jack in Medda’s is UNMATCHED. He’s so bouncy and light and he’s STIMMING and he’s so happy. I love it.
I could go on and on but I won’t. I just really love the artistic differences between Ryan and Ben’s Davey Jacobs’. I love both of their adaptations, but Ryan’s Davey feels so authentically autistic. And I am PRAYING we get to see his Davey immortalised in a pro-shot?! PLEASE?!
Ryan Kopel, thank you so much for giving us this wonderfully autistic Davey Jacobs on stage.

For the drabble requests, perhaps Jack helping Davey work through an essay? Like Davey has so many ideas and he just can't figure out how to turn them into a singular essay, so Jack helps him
Oooooh this is cute cause it’s something I struggle with in essays all the time too
“I’m coming to the decision that words are stupid and overrated,” Davey declared with a frustrated sigh. His head hit his knees with a soft thump, pencil rolling onto the ground.
Jack stopped it’s progress with his foot, his own head tilted. He was sitting opposite Davey with a sketchbook propped across his knees in the mirror of the others notebook. “Now there’s a headline,”
Davey blew out a breath. “Ha ha,”
“M’serious! Could make good money with that,” Jack insisted. He leant forward to flick Davey’s nose as his selling voice took over. “Extra, extra! David Jacobs, sick a’ words! Y’heard it here first folks!”
“First of all, that ain’t what I said,”
“Ain’t it?”
“No, I said-,” Davey cut off with his brow furrowed. “That is what I said, isn’t it?”
“Yeah! S’why I made it a headline,” Jack explained, nodding eagerly. He examined Davey’s expression for a moment before setting his sketch aside and propping his elbows across his knees. “Alright Dave, ain’t taking the piss no more. What’s up?”
“This-,” Davey waved a hand, tapped his page. It was covered in his cramped, scribbled handwriting and when Jack peered at it he saw just as many thick, crossed out lines as words. “-essay. It’s killing me,”
“Thought y’had a ton of points for it?”
“I do! But I spent too long just thinking about them, and now they won’t go on the page how I want,”
Jack gnawed his lip. “Can’t y’just put what you’s thinking?” he offered uncertainly. Writing had never been his strong suit but he was determined to offer some help.
Davey shook his head. “Not really. I know it sounds stupid but it all makes so much more sense up here,” He pointed at his temple and wrinkled his nose when he looked back at the page. “On here, it gets all weird and tangled y’know?”
Jack shuffled forward. “Naw,” he said, and then hastily added, “Naw, it ain’t stupid I mean. Makes sense,”
Davey laughed his rare, honey sweet laugh at Jack’s fumble. “Really?”
“I think? Like- like when I’m tryin’ t’draw something and I can see it all in my head but it ain’t coming out right on the paper. Hands all weird an’ the face don’t look like a face an’ the legs is all wobbly,”
“Like that,” Davey nodded, offering the flicker of a smile. He scrubbed a hand through his hair and Jack couldn’t tell how reassured he was. “How do you deal with it?”
“Well…,” Jack started slowly, chewing on the end of his own pencil. “Sometimes I just give up, but when I doesn’t wanna I do it one bit at a time. Forget about the hands an’ the weird legs an’ just look at the face till is starts lookin’ right,”
“So…what? Stop thinking about it as a whole, just look at the individual bits?”
“Yeah! Yeah, like that!” Jack said, grinning. “See, already doing better wit’ words. Than me at least,”
“I dunno, that was a pretty decent metaphor there Jackie,”
“Meta- huh?”
“Nevermind,”
Jack pulled a face at him and shuffled over to sit at his side, retrieving his pencil in one easy movement. He offered it to him with a bowed head until Davey laughed. “Awright Dave. Go through the little bits, yeah? Lemme see it,”
“Are you sure?” Davey took the pencil, rolling it between his fingers. “You don’t know the topic,”
“But you does,” Jack pointed out. He propped his chin on Davey’s shoulder and beamed up at him. “M’jus’ gona help you sort through it till it all makes sense, yeah? An’ maybe I’ll learn a bit,”
“Yeah. Yeah, okay,”
“Okay! Let’s do this, Dave. Best get an A,”
“It’s due for tomorrow, by the way,”
“Oh for fuck- let’s make it a quick A,”
Davey just laughed as he dumped his notebook in Jack’s lap. “Read it,”
So Jack read it, and the rest came surprisingly easy after that.

Them Brooklyn Boys Is Big pt.2
part one please read part one first, nothing here will make much sense. also I intend to make this a longer series, like at least 5 parts, but if I don't then I don't please don't track me down :)))
TW: violence and language, if graphic violence triggers you, plz don't read on. PUHLEASE. I'm begging you. It gets dark.
What would Make Jack and Race give up their heirarchy in Manhattan? or rather... Who?
Davey had finally started getting used to being a newsie. It definitely wasn't as nice as school, but he finally had friends. He finally had people who he could be himself around. They were family to him. Especially Jack, Davey's loving boyfriend. For once in Davey's life, he wasn't stressed over due dates for papers in school, he could relax, let loose, and hang out with his friends.
In Manhattan, all the newsies gathered at Jacobi's deli after selling. They got spread out all across the borough, so going to the deli gave them time to catch up with one another.
Davey was on his way to Jacobi's late one day after selling. Jack had nagged him to buy more papers to sell, and it definitely wasn't easy, But he had an extra few cents in his pocket, so he wasn't complaining.
He was strolling down the street, only a few blocks away from Jacobi's, when he was roughly grabbed by the arm. He abruptly tripped over his feet, and suddenly was hit with a blinding pain in his head, and he was out.
cold.
----------
"Where am I?" Davey said, as he awoke from his 'slumber.' He looked around the dimly lit room, and what he saw next caused him to feel the bile in his throat. His mouth went dry, the pain from his head fading.
"Spot, Spot, are you ok? can you hear me?" He asked the bloodied boy next to him. Spot had a black eye, bruises on his jaw, cuts all over his face, and blood seeping from a gash on his collarbone.
Spot nodded, not being able to speak due to the duct tape around his mouth. His face was bruised, blood crusted from the cuts. It pained Davey so much to see him like this.
"I'm gonna get us out of here," Davey said, before trying to undo the tight ropes that tied his arms behind his back. Spot shook his head, trying to motion for Davey to stop. "Hold on, my ropes are almost undone," Davey whispered as he struggled to undo the ropes. When he was younger, his father taught him how to maneuver out of ropes in situations like these. He just had to hope whoever tied them wasn't smart enough to tie it good enough.
He struggled more, until, "I'm free!" He whispered to Spot. "Let me take you tape off," Davey added, before carefully removing the tape tightly bound to Spot's bruised skin, trying to avoid as much pain for him as possible.
"They kidnapped us," Spot said between labored breaths, "because they were old leaders of the Manhattan newsies. They're gonna use us as leverage over Jack and Race to hand over Manhattan," Spot said, wincing from the growing pain of his bruises and cuts.
"You thought you could try to escape, Jacobs?" They heard a deep, growling voice enter the room.
we're screwed, Davey thought to himself.
I'll tag pt. 3 down below when I post it, and when the entire series is done I will do a seperate post with the links to every part for you all.
pt.3 T.B.B.I.B
Sorry bout the violence, but for some reason all my good ideas include it <333

anyway i love davey jacobs here's some songs that speak to me about him
otherwise - jake scott "i put on a smile, i put on a show. ... if you ask i'll be doing just fine, but i wouldn't tell you otherwise. i don't feel like i measure up 'cause i don't feel like i'm good enough." just this whole song. give me davey who has always feels like he's just mediocre at everything, he gives me honors kid who burned out during high school vibes
belief - ben fankhauser (yeah yeah i know) "is anybody listening to the song that i sing? does anyone even know who i am? if i sing hallelujah right on up to ya, would you give a damn?" this song is two-fold for me. it has a political aspect ("cowards turn to soldiers to solve their problems" etc) that i feel speaks of david, but also it gives me davey struggling with his relationship with G-d
give a little - legrand, cg5 "everyone projecting all their dreams on me ... piece by piece im slipping away. just give a little, give a little, give a little until you disintegrate" davey who doesn't know who he is as an adult because he's spent his entire life living and doing what other people tell him to do until he finally snaps and does things for himself for once
the middle - jimmy eat world "just live right now and be yourself. it doesn't matter if it's good enough for someone else" this is like after his realization that he deserves to be himself!!!!
anyway you can find these songs in my David Jacobs playlist on Spotify /shameless plug

The End of the World In a Woman’s Hands [Newsies]
Tumblr media
chapter seven
♡ newsies masterlist ♡ previous chapter ♡ next chapter ♡
summary: Being a girl in the everyday world is difficult. Being the leader of the Manhattan Newsies and a girl? Even more so. Especially when nobody knows you're a girl and the truth is the closest kept secret you have ever had. For Jack Kelly, keeping the truth of her gender a secret is one she's found easy after doing so for many years. Unfortunately, having close encounters with the iron fist, Pulitzer, and a new Newsie who seems determined to get to know her, that secret might just become the opposite.
pairing: fem!jack kelly x david “davey” jacobs
warnings: none
Tumblr media
A juggler struggles on stage. Medda, waiting to go on, checks her makeup as Jack and David talk to her.
“Darlings, I love you,” she tells them. “I wish you luck on your rally, I am behind you one hundred percent. But I'm not running a union hall here. This is a theater, a temple of art. And a well-known money pit.”
“We got money, Medda. Some, anyway.” Jack takes some money out of the Prince Albert can.
David watches her. “We'll take a collection at the door,” he says. “We'll pay whatever you ask.”
“It's not the money. I depend on the papers. They write good things about me, the customers flock here like sheep. They give me the pan, I'm the one who gets sheared.”
“You're afraid of them, too…” David observes.
Jack looks at David, disappointed but understanding. “Medda's gotta look out for herself same as anybody. We'll find another place.”
“How can they make a whole city afraid? We're the ones putting our necks on the line. All we need is for somebody to have the guts to stand up and show them we're not alone!”
Medda gives them both an apologetic look. “They have the power to destroy people…”
“They can't destroy you if you fight them–only if you let them own you!”
Jack watches David in awe. She understands that while she may be the face of the Manhattan Newsies and the strike, David is the brains, the voice, and the power.
“You are so young…” Medda’s voice turns soft. She looks back out at the stage as Jack starts to pull David away. “Got to be on Monday night. I'm dark on Monday nights.”
Jack looks at her and smiles. She tries to put her money in Medda’s hand but she refuses it. “Take it, Medda. Please?” Medda takes it reluctantly. “Thanks.”
“Don't thank me. Thank Mr. Wisenheimer Guilt-maker of 1899 there.” She winks at David and moves off to the stage.
Later, Mush painstakingly charcoals "NEWSIES RALLY–IRVING HALL" on a piece of cardboard. Newsies are scattered in the lobby making handbills, signs, posters.
Kloppman comes in and stops short, seeing a dark figure at his counter, going through his register. “Can I help you?” He asks and the figure turns, revealing Snyder with a smarmy smile.
Snyder steps forward. “Do you have a 'Jack Kelly' registered here? I wish to see him.” This makes the Newsies look up, alert.
Kloppman feigns ignorance. “'Jack Kelly...?' Any of you boys know a 'Jack Kelly'?
“Unusual name for these parts,” snipeshooter drawls.
“I knew a Jack somebody once. Prob'ly not the same guy,” Skittery says.
“You mean Jack Kelly?” Racetrack starts. Behind Snyder, they see Jack bouncing in the front door. Racetrack tries to signal her. “He was here but he put an egg in his shoe and beat it.”
Jack sees Snyder, but instead of running back out the door, she can't resist mocking him behind his back. The Newsies snicker but Snyder thinks it’s simply because of Race’s comment.
Snyder smiles blandly. “I have reason to believe he's an escaped prisoner. Possibly dangerous.”
“Oh, dear me…dangerous? My files are in the rear. This way, please.” Kloppman tries to move Snyder away, silently imploring Jack to go, but Jack takes her time, picks up a leaflet, elaborately approves it, pockets it and strolls out, blowing good night kisses.
The Newsies crack up and Snyder wheels around suspiciously. Racetrack thrusts a leaflet in his face. “Give to the Newsies strike fund, mista?”
Snyder tries to look around the leaflet, then it catches his eye: "RALLY AGAINST PULITZER." He takes it thoughtfully, making a connection. Smiling dangerously, he digs out a penny and drops it in the surprised Racetrack's hand.

I Never Planned On You Chapter 3: Business- Davey Jacobs x Poppy
Tumblr media
Word Count: 3.2k
Tumblr media
“Woah- new kids,” Casey muttered to Poppy and Tinker, staring at a tall boy dressed in a white button up, a brown vest and a blue tie as well as the small kid beside him. The older boy was obviously struggling, and a small commotion occurred between Jack, Davey and Wiesel that was inaudible to the girls from where they stood. Poppy looked the boy up and down for a moment.
“Wonder what’s going on,” she trailed off absentmindedly before making her way to the group. The older boy flinched as Oscar threw another paper at him and Jack handed him some extra papers.
“Aw, now what did that poor pape do to be thrown like that?” Poppy teased Oscar as she approached the distribution counter.
Davey turned red as he watched the girl with fiery hair approaching. He stared at her for a moment. Something about this girl was so entrancing, so captivating to him and he was left speechless for a moment. He felt as if his breath had been stolen away, but he soon regained it with a gasp as Jack pushed him forward.
“It’s okay Wiesel, I'm sure it was an honest mistake on account'a Oscar can't count to twenty with his shoes on,” Jack joked. In turn the boy began to lunge at him, but was stopped by Wiesel.
“Go on now, out of the way,” he instructed. Jack pushed Davey to move along, the duo stopping in front of the redhead.
“Good mornin’, Poppy,” Jack greeted with a smile;
“Mornin’ Jack. Getting into trouble a little early today, aren’t we?” She teased, crossing her arms over her stomach. Jack laughed at that.
“Course, you know me,” He joked back, giving Davey a slap on the back that made the poor boy almost jump out of his skin.
“And you already dragged the new kid into it.”She nodded her head to the still unnamed boy, giving him another once over. She had to admit he was handsome- though not out loud, of course. Jack nodded and looked at the other boy.
“David, this is Poppy, Poppy this is Davey,” he paused and looked down at the small unnamed kid from earlier, which the girl had almost forgotten about. “And Les.” The boy, Davey, squeezed his eyes shut for a moment in shock, then raised his eyebrows as he opened them again.
“Um- hi,” he said nervously, holding out a hand for her.
“Hi,” Poppy returned amusedly as she shook his hand. “Never seen a girl before or do you act this way around all of ‘em to be charming?” Davey turned an even brighter shade of red, his eyes widening in embarrassment.
“Sorry-” His apology was cut off by Les, who stepped in between them.
“He’s always this bad, sweetheart,” he interjected confidently. The girl’s eyebrows shot up in surprise as she looked down at the younger boy.
“Good to know,” she joked before sticking her hand out to him. “Les, right?” He nodded and took her hand, pressing a kiss to it. Davey smacked the back of his head and let out a small huff.
“C’mon, we have work to do” he instructed, grabbing Les’ hand.
“Some people don’t know a thing or two about manners,” Poppy joked to Les. “How old are you, kid?”
“I’m ten!” He answered enthusiastically, causing Davey to stop and stare at him bemusedly, before pausing and looking off to the side. “Almost.”
“If anybody asks, you’re seven,” she advised. “Younger sells better. And, if you’re needing a sellin’ partner….”
“Who said we wanna partner?” Davey cut in with an incredulous look on his face.
“I did,” she shrugged. “You two obviously don’t know the first thing on how to sell a good pape - no offense there, Davey - and, not to brag, but I just happen to be the best seller in Manhattan aside from Jack.” Shot him a cute sort’ve cheesy smile at him. Davey attempted to step to the side.
“If you’re the best, what do you need with me?” He asked
“You got a little brother and I don’t,” she shrugged, wrapping an arm around Les’ shoulders and squishing his face with her other hand.“You see this face? It could sell a thousand papes a week.” The older boy still didn’t seem convinced, so she looked down at Les.
“Do your best sad face,” she instructed, waiting for him to do so before smiling wildly. “We’re gonna make millions. But, my two bits come off the top, then we’ll split everything 70/30.” Les pulled away from her and crossed his arms.
“50/50. You wouldn’t try to pull a fast one on a little kid,” he said, glaring up at her.
“You drive a hard bargain, kid,” she hummed thoughtfully. “60/40, that’s my final offer.” Les glanced at his brother, who merely offered him a small shrug. Satisfied with that, he turned back to her and stuck out his hand with a smile.
“Deal!”
“Wonderful doin’ business with ya,” she spat in her hand and held it out for the young boy. Les giggled and copied her before shaking her hand. Davey made a disgusted face at them.
“That’s disgusting.”
“That’s business, dear Davey,” Poppy shrugged, wrapping her arm around Les’ shoulders as the older began to walk away.
“Don’t worry about him, he needs to learn to relax is what my mom says,” Les said, looking up at the girl.
“Maybe your mom’s onto something,” she joked, pulling him along to follow Davey. “So where ya thinking of sellin’, Dave?” The boy shrugged.
“I don’t know- somewhere crowded?”
“Smart boy,” she nodded approvingly. “But, just make sure you’re not sellin’ in someone else’s spot. Newsies are pretty territorial and they don’t appreciate when someone nabs their spot.” Davey’s brows furrowed and he turned to her as they walked.
“Isn’t it unfair to claim a spot?” He asked.
“He’s an amateur,” Les said, looking up at the girl as if he knew anything. She grinned and patted Les’ shoulder approvingly before looking at Davey again.
“Not to us. Selling’s our only source of income. You mess with that, they’re not gonna like it. I’ve seen people be taught a lesson like that more times than I can count.” The boy shrugged.
“Okay, where do you suggest we go?” Poppy hummed thoughtfully, taking a moment to look around.
“Library. People pass by it the most, if you don’t get any buyers then you’re just bad at sellin’,” she half joked. The answer seemed to satiate him because he nodded and began leading them towards the library.
“You know how to sell a pape?” She asked as she followed.
“It can’t be too hard, can it?” He questioned. Poppy raised her eyebrows, almost amusedly and tried not to smile.
“Give it a try,” she implored, leaning against the railing of the library steps. He shot her a look before pulling one of the papers out of his bags and holding it up to display the headline.
“Extra! Trolley strike enters third week! Read it here! Trolley strike drags into the third week!” He called out, trying to stop people who just walked right past him. Poppy watched him attempt to work for a full (painful) minute before grabbing his arm and pulling him out of people’s way.
“See how that didn’t work? It’s because your headline ain’t exciting enough. Sometimes you gotta stretch the truth to sell,” she explained, pulling out a newspaper for herself and holding it up. “Extra! Extra! Terrified flight from burnin' inferno! You heard the story right here!” Immediately someone stopped to buy the paper from her before continuing on. Upon turning back to Davey, she was met with a furrowed brow on the boy’s face.
“You just made that up,” he pointed out.
“No I didn’t,” she responded simply. “I said he heard it right here, which he did.”
“My father taught us not to lie,” he said in a huff.
“Yeah well mine taught me not to starve,” she retorted flatly. “You wanna make money, you gotta make the headline interesting. No one cares about the trolley strike, they care about disasters.” With that, she moved behind him and gave him a nudge forward to continue selling.
“So you guys are territorial liars, anything else I need to know?” He asked, glancing back at her.
“Hey, if you don’t wanna work with me, just say the word and I’ll walk,” she held her hands up defensively before crossing her arms. “I just wanted to help you two.” Davey sighed softly as he sold another paper (this time using Poppy’s tactic), then turned to face her again.
“I’m sorry- this is different is all,” He muttered, which allowed her shoulders to relax.
“I get it, it’s difficult on everyone’s first day. I just don’t wanna see either of you get hurt,” she responded. “Some newsies are mean and territorial, but there are some nice ones who actually want others to succeed. To do that, you need to understand how our world works, you know?” He nodded and opened his mouth to respond, but paused when Les ran up to them.
“Hey! I just sold my last paper!”
“Nice job little man,” Poppy laughed enthusiastically, ruffling his hair. “You’re a natural!” Davey watched the interaction with a small smile before catching himself. He cleared his throat and held up his last paper.
“I have one more.”
“Give it here,” he snatched the paper from his brother, then ran up to a lady, making puppy eyes at her and coughing. “Buy a pape from a poor orphan boy?” The lady gasped, clutching a hand to her chest before answering.
“Oh you dear thing, of course I’ll take a newspaper! Here’s a dime,” she said, handing Les a dime and walking off to which Les stares at the dime with an awed expression.
“Born to the breed,” Poppy concluded with an approving grin.
“Man, this is so much better than school!” The young boy exclaimed excitedly. Davey rested a hand on his shoulder and squeezed it.
“Don't even think about it. When Pop goes back to work, we go back to school.” Poppy watched the interaction in silence before jumping in.
“So, how about we divvy up the money, grab some chow, then find you somewheres safe to spend the night?” She offered. Davey collected their money and began dividing it.
“We gotta get home, our folks will be waitin’ dinner,” he explained as he handed her share over. The girl raised her eyebrows a bit in surprise and (dare I say it) envy.
“You got folks, huh?” She asked softly, earning a confused look from Les.
“Doesn’t everyone?” He asked, and Davey elbowed him, hard. He sighed as he looked down at Poppy.
“Our dad tangled with a delivery truck on the job. Messed his leg up bad, so they laid him off. That's how come we had to find work,” he said in what was possibly the softest voice she’d heard from him thus far. A sympathetic smile formed on the girl’s face as she nodded.
“Yeah, makes sense. Sorry to hear about your dad.” The boy hummed thoughtfully, glancing at Les for a moment before looking at her again.
“Why don't you come home with us for dinner? Our folks would be happy to have you,” he offered.
“Well, I don’t wanna be a bother…” she responded hesitantly, admittedly surprised by the invitation.
“No, please, I insist,” Davey said quickly, a small smile adorning his face. She felt a tug on her arm, and upon looking down she realized it was Les.
“Mom’s a great cook!” He added. She hesitated for another moment before ultimately nodding with a small smile.
“Oh, alright,” she acquiesced. “Thank you.” Both Les and Davey looked happy with her answer, the younger boy even going as far as cheering. With that settled Davey began to lead the way to their house.
“Gosh my parents will love you,” he commented.
“Really now?” Poppy asked amusedly as she followed alongside him, wrapping an arm around Les’ shoulders again.“What makes you say that?”
“You’re pretty, that’s why,” Les cut in. She glanced at Davey out of the corner of her eye, quickly noticing the blush on the boy’s face as he looked down. That, in turn, brought a blush to her own cheeks as she laughed softly.
“Well aren’t you a sweetheart?” She cooed amusedly. “You’re gonna be a real lady killer someday.” That made the young boy grin as they reached the steps of the Jacobs household. Davey opened the front door for them.
“A real lady killer, they drop like flies,” he joked in the process. Poppy snorted, unable to help herself, and covered her mouth with her free hand.
“So rude to your brother,” she reprimanded jokingly as she stepped inside. The boy merely shrugged with a grin as he set his bag down and took off his cap.
“We’re home!” He called.
“So soon?” A woman’s voice called back, and not a few seconds later Mary, Davey’s mother, peered around the entryway to the kitchen, wiping her hands off on her apron. “David, your fathe-” She paused and smiled brightly when her eyes landed on Poppy.
“Oh, well hello,” she greeted, wiping off her hands more thoroughly as she walked out so she might shake her hand, “And who might you be?” The redhead smiled somewhat nervously and took off her cap. It felt odd to be inside an actual cozy looking home, talking to such a kind looking adult.
“Oh, I’m Poppy, your sons invited me to dinner if that’s alright with you, ma’am,” she explained. Mary sighed lovingly, walking over to her and offering her hand.
“Poppy, such a pleasure to meet you. I’m Mary. I’m sure you helped my sweet boys out today, they were so nervous,” she tuts, causing Davey to blush in embarrassment. The sight made Poppy giggle as she shook the woman’s hand.
“It’s nice to meet you ma’am, and yes I did help them. They’re fast learners,” she answered.
“Gosh you are pretty, darling,” she said, looking her over as she held one of Poppy’s hands in both of hers, giving Davey a hopeful look. She and his father Michael had been waiting for him to bring a girl home for so long. With his shyness they were beginning to grow afraid that he would never meet someone. Davey, meanwhile, had never been a deeper shade of red as he cleared his throat.
“Um, she’ll be staying for dinner,” he repeated Poppy’s earlier words in an attempt to change the subject. Mary smiled and squeezed the younger girl’s hand reassuringly.
“Well, make yourself at home, dinner will be ready in just a moment.”
“Thank you ma’am,” Poppy muttered, still a bit flustered by the compliment, squeezing her hand back. Mary pulled away to make her way back to the kitchen.
“Les, honey, wash your hands, you look filthy,” she called back, earning a groan from the young boy as he trudged to the kitchen. Once they were out of sight Davey sighed softly.
“Sorry about her,” he laughed out. The girl merely shook her head with a small smile.
“No, it’s fine. She’s so sweet. Are all mothers like that?” Davey shrugged.
“A lot of them. Mine is particularly worried. She always worries about how I look, my grades, where I am, who’s around me,” he listed off. “But I’m very lucky for her. She’s a wonderful woman.” Poppy hummed thoughtfully and nodded.
“You’re one lucky kid, Davey,” she agreed softly, which made him look at her.
“You’re always welcome here if you ever need a meal or a place to sleep,” he offered.
“I don’t think your folks would appreciate you inviting some random girl to their house at random,” she half joked. “They don’t even know me.” The boy merely shook his head.
“Trust me, they wouldn’t mind,” he retorted. Before the girl could respond Mary poked her head out of the kitchen doorway.
“Dinner time, you two.”
“Thank you ma’am,” Poppy said with a smile, glancing back at Davey before following her into the kitchen. “Is there anything I can help set out?” Mary shook her head quickly.
“No! No. Make yourself comfortable, I’ll make you a plate. You’re a guest,” she insisted. Upon looking back at Davey again, she realized he was giving her a look that said ‘I told you so.’ She scrunched up her nose at him before hesitantly taking a seat at the table as Michael walked in on his crutches. He paused upon seeing Poppy and looked at her confusedly. Mary seemed to know what he was thinking because she spoke before he could question the girl.
“Micheal, dear, this is Poppy! Davey made a new friend.” While Davey buried his head into his hands in embarrassment, Les’ brows furrowed.
“Hey! She was my friend first!”
“Really now?” Michael asked amusedly as he limped over to the table, sitting down at the head of it. “Well, it’s lovely to meet you, Poppy. Any friend of Davey’s is a friend of ours.” The girl in question blushed shyly and smiled politely at him.
“You as well sir,” she answered coyly as Mary set plates in front of everyone.
“So, Poppy, how long have you been selling newspapers? I’m sure my boys are learning from the best of the best,” she teased lightly, ruffling Davey's hair as she walked past him.
“I’ve been selling since I was around ten,” she answered dutifully, though her eyes were admittedly on the plate in front of her, eyes somewhat wide in surprise by the amount on her plate. She couldn’t remember the last time eaten a full course meal. Mary was quick to notice that because she giggled.
“You look starving, dear, eat!” She encouraged. Poppy tried not to blush in embarrassment as she began to eat, trying to not just scarf it down.
“Do they not feed you at home?” Michael asked amusedly.
“No sir,” Poppy shook her head. “Newsies have to pay for any food themselves, which isn’t a lot usually. We usually get some bread from the church though.” It wasn’t until Mary set a hand over her heart that she realized Michael had been joking.
“Oh- you poor thing. You are always welcome here for food, a bath or anything you need,” she offered in a maternal tone.
“That’s not necessary, Mrs. Jacobs,” she said quickly, then laughed a little. “I made that sound bad, but I’m used to it. I’ve been doin’ it since I was ten.”
“Really, we mean it, you’re always welcome,” she insisted. She glanced at Davey out of the coroner of her eye and noticed him smiling at her, almost as if in agreement. That’s what made her finally nod, a small smile playing on her own lips.
“Well thank you. I appreciate it.” And so Poppy ended up staying for several hours at the Jacobs house. After dinner they’d all moved to the living room and just talked until Les finally grew tired and fell asleep there on the couch. That was when Poppy decided it was time to head home. So, after wishing the family goodnight, she headed to the lodging home with a full stomach and a smile on her face. She had a good feeling about this family.

Riordan have had a habit of leaning more into fan services than actual good plot since the first series ended and I'm honest to God fucking scared that the show is going to diminish Luke Castellan's depth as a character because of all the fucking fandom wars surrounding his character. Don't make him shallow. Make the antagonist just as interesting as the protagonist in the show. And cast an actor that is as incredibly talented as the lead dude.

actually, the most powerful big three trio is percy, jason and hazel. percy defeated a god (ares) by himself, jason been trying to survive on his own since he was 2 years old and defeated a titan (krios) by HAND TO HAND COMBAT by himself, and hazel defeated a primordial (gaea) by herself and then survived 7 DECADES in the underworld without going insane. by herself. AGAIN.

Why is Jack Kelly always the single dad in Javid single dad aus like please give me sleep deprived David Jacobs who's struggling to feed little Elmer and support his baby brother Les' education and one day wandering little Elmer ends up on the tattoo shop in front of their apartment complex during a game of hide and seek with his uncle Les and half an hour and a hysterical David and sobbing Les later, little Elmer returns to the playground hand in hand with this cocky smiling man (his arms are full of tattoos jesus christ is that a moon on his collarbone) and little Elmer is grinning and showing Daddy Dave all his sticker tattoos that nice uncle Jack Jack put on his arms.

My #1 post of 2022
I will never get tired of saying the Merlin Core 4 are phenomenal actors. Colin Morgan's skills are insane it's almost criminal he isn't mainstream in film and tv. His understanding of the script and portrayal of emotions are always so entertaining to watch. Katie McGrath is always a scene-stealer no matter the project. Angel Coulby's range is so underrated, you could give that woman an assignment and put her in front of a camera and it's a guarantee that she'd deliver. Bradley James had the charm of a male lead, and also has the personality to be an amazing entertainer.

Dark Alleys and Dark Bruises- Javid
Helllloooo!!! I haven’t posted a Javid oneshot for awhile so here you go! (also on Wattpad: Forbidden Thoughts~Javid Oneshots)
TW: blood, homophobia, use of f****t, angst (with happy ending!!)
The dirty puddles twinkled in the soft lamplight as Jack Kelly's footsteps disturbed them. He watched the ripples disappear into the edges, humming with slight interest. Leaning on the wall beside him, Jack looked up at the few stars that he could see through the clouds.
That kid's really killin' me, he thought bitterly. Again, his mind landed on a subject that he could never escape: David Jacobs.
Jack was on the way back to the Lodge from walking Davey and Les to their home, "It's dangerous out these days," was the only excuse he could muster, trying to hide the fact he just wanted more time with Davey.
Now, as Jack stood alone, he looked glumly around. Everything here could only remain him of Davey- the grimy pavement as dark as the boys hair, the soft lamplight as tender as his cheek, hidden alleyways where Jack would fantasise pulling him into, the twinkling stars matching his shining eyes.
Jack shook his head angrily.
He pushed off the wall and stuffed his hands roughly in his pockets. Girls, boys, he loved them both. Too bad none but the newsies really liked that.
So caught up in his thoughts as he was, Jack didn't see the two shadows slither up  behind him.
A voice dripped in sarcasm drifted out from the darkness as Jack froze in his tracks.
"Oi! What'd we's have here now? That the famous Jack Kelly, is it?"
Oscar and Morris Delancey scuffled out from behind him. Jack sighed loudly, turning back with a fake, smug smile and threw his hands up.
"Oscar, Morris. What cha doing down in these parts, shouldn't yer be crawlin' 'round by someone else's feet at this time of night?"
Oh, they didn't like that comment.
Their smiles faded and clean shaven jaw clenched.
"We's was just passin' by 'til we saw ya round 'ere alone." Oscar spat, cracked his knuckles and advanced. Jack tried to stand his ground but when Oscars hot and mucky breath washed over his cold face, he clenched his fists and stepped back.
"My fists have been aching without anything to punch-" before Jack could respond, Morris took a swing at him, but he dodged it with a gulp. What were they playing at? What did they want?
"Oi, where's yer little boyfriend, aye Kelly? Davey was it?"
Ah, so that's what they wanted.
"Don't have a boyfriend," Jack shrugged, "What, you offering Morris?"
Morris growled and pushed him roughly into an empty alley way. Jack, who hadn't prepared to be pushed, fell violently onto his back, hitting his head on the pavement. Before he could get up, Oscar dug his heel into his chest and forced him back down.
He leaned over him, "Come on Jaaaack, you can tell us if yer a dirty homosexual. We's won't tell."
Jack struggled against his foot and attempted to push him off.
"I ain't gonna. An' if I were, I don't  appreciate yer callin' us dirty."
Oscar let Jack scramble up to stand, then kicked him in the stomach, winding him and making him double over in a vulnerable position where they could sock him right in the jaw.
"We's ain't stupid," Morris growled, "You're a disgusting f****t, we've seen the way you and that Davey kid look at each other."
Jack coughed up bright red blood onto the grimy pavement.
"Burn in hell." He snarled.
They leaned forward, "Oh, we won't be the only ones, Queer."
Before another breath could be taken, they started kicking him down, punching him in the jaw, bruising his ribs, cutting his head until it bled on the ground, spitting on his face.
Then, they left him in the cold, bleeding and bruised, hardly able to sit up, slurs echoing through his head.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Where's Jack?" Les whined, looking around at the Newsies Square. Davey's smile flattered but he straightened up to pat his brother reassuringly on his head.
"He'll be here."
A minute passed, then five, then fifteen.
Crutchie hobbled over to them.
"You's seen Jack this mornin'?"
Davey's brow furrowed and shook his head. "No. Didn't he come back last night?"
It was Crutchies turn to shake his head.
Davey looked around anxiously, "He wouldn't have gone to Brooklyn or Queens or somethin'?"
Crutchie looked around as if he would sense him. "Nah, he woulda told one a us," he frowned. "Or you's guys," he added.
Worry started to tease at the edge off Davey's mind. Jack was strong. He would be fine.
If he's strong he would've made it back by now, Daveys brain argued.
  Okay, now his mind was full of fear of every single bad thing that could happen to a Newsies around these parts- especially in the middle of the night when Jack had left.
Racer- who had previous joined the conversation- laid a reassuring hand on David's shoulder, "Aye..... Aye Dave what ya worrying about? It's gonna be-"
"I'm gonna go look for 'em," Davey snapped, turning sharply away before giving Les the money and waving a quick goodbye for now. After a nod from Crutchie, Racetrack went with him.
~~~~~~~~~~~
They had been following the route back to Davey's apartment for a while now, checking each dark alley, each shop window, each side street, just for a small glimpse of where Jack was.
Davey had started panicking when they had gone almost half an hour without a clue, taking off his hat to run his clammy fingers through his dark hair.
"I really dunno," Race sighed, kicking a stick on the road into the alleyway next to them, "he could be anywhere by now, Davey, I-"
There was a groan from the alleyway. Race and David froze.
"What was that....?" Davey half-heartily whispered as Race was already approaching the dark clump .
"Err.....Dave, you better come 'ere quick..."
Davey ran. Then, just as fast, he froze..
Davey found it hard to believe that Jack Kelly- one of the strongest leaders Dave knew, the hard muscled boy with an equally quick witted come back always ready, the boy who never flinched in the way of danger- was the same boy who curled and flinched as Dave put a trembling hand to his shoulder.
"Jack?" He didn't respond as Davey crouched beside him, next to Race, "Hey Jackie?"
"...Dave?"
The voice that whispered was hoarse and cold, nothing like the Jack Dave knew. His head lolled towards where Davey's voice came from. His fingers were crusted with old blood, his face was covered in darkening bruises and an angled nose was red and dried, but through the pain he was still able to reach towards his Dave.
"Hey Jack, it's gonna be okay, it'll be okay, just wait," Dave leaned down to wrap his finger around Jacks, whispering soft assurances. As soon as he had finished he whipped his head up to Race and hissed instructions.
"Racetrack we're getting Jack back to my house."
Race looked between them and opened his mouth to say something.
"Now."
Race, suddenly extremely scared of David, jumped up to push Jack up to sitting.
"Slowly!"
Race flinched.
Jack moaned in pain as he was forced up. Davey reached forward to caress gently at one of Jacks bigger bruises on his face, and held his head when Jack nuzzled into his soft, warm hand.
"It'll be okay..."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After helping (well, more precisely, dragging) Jack back to Davey's apartment Race went back to Newsies Square to tell the others what happened. He could only gesture a quick goodbye through the fussing of David's mother.
"Is this the Jack Kelly you've been talking so much about? I can help- if you need. I....I can...Help clean the wounds- oh I'll go make something hot! How 'bout I-"
"I can do it, Ma," Davey interrupted his mother, smiling softly afterward. Jack was currently asleep on Davey's bed, words and movements too hard on his body at the moment. David's mother insisted on helping.
"I can handle it, Ma, I swear. I... actually, when I think about it, can you get me a cloth and some water?"
"Of course!"
That would occupy her for a bit.
Letting out a breath, Davey moved over to where Jack was laid, sleeping peacefully, and sat at his feet.
Dave's mother came in to give her son the rag and water, then, after Davey asked her to close the door on her way out, left hesitantly.
Then they were alone.
The resting boy grunted softly in his dream. Dampening the cloth, Davey pressed it against Jacks forehead.
It went on like that for quite some time, and even though it was lonely, Dave enjoyed watching Jack's chest gently rise and fall with each of his quiet breaths, no pain or stress currently weighing it down.
When it came to unbuttoning Jacks vest to reveal his bare chest to clean the wounds underneath, Davey did it hesitantly and slowly.
Jack would understand, wouldn't he? Yeah...yeah.
~
A sudden coldness and sticky pain was what woke him. Jack stirred slightly, peeling open his heavy eyelids to squint at the hazy silhouette of a beautiful boy.
He looked to the side and Jack made out the curve of a nose through the shining light which shone behind the boy he stared at.
An angel?
Jack blinked the sand out of his eyes and grunted gingerly, moving his arms under him to lift himself up.
Davey turned. "Oh! Hey Jackie, how ya feeling?" He whispered, the edges of his lips curling in both happiness and worry.
"Aye, er," he winced as he moved his ribs, "could be better, i think."
Davey didn't like seeing Jack in pain, so he made a practiced move to help him sit up and positioned the pillow so he could rest on it.
Jack looked down at his open shirt, took one glance at a blushed Davey, and said nothing about it.
"So..." Davey whispered, "What happened? Who did it, 'cuz I'll go soak 'em right now if I have to, I'll knock some bloody sense inter 'em, you don't mess with Jack Kelly and get away with it-"
"Nah, nah, Davey don't do that it's fine." Davey huffed out a breath. Jack smirked as he watched him wrestle his thoughts and eventually- and angrily might I add- brought the cloth back up to a wound on Jacks cheek that had already been cleaned.
The silence stretched out for longer than what was comfortable.
"It was the Delancey's..." Jack muttered after awhile.
Davey gritted his teeth.
"They's were just pickin' on me, that's all." Jack could tell Dave didn't bye it. He didn't meet his eye, but the pause in his cleaning told a tale.
"What did they say?" David hissed, finally bringing back his hand and looking Jack in his beautifully dark eyes. Jack looked away.
"Theys....nothin'.....it was nothin' Dave..."
"It was not nothing, Jack, don't lie to me, I found you lying in an alley, hardly bloody conscious!"
Jack blinked. He hadn't heard Davey this angry since the strike.
"I....Fine.....T.....Theys were callin' me slurs. Sayin' I should die for being.....for liking boys like I do...." Jack looked away again.
David froze. Then he started to move, eyes cold as he pushed off the bed. But Jack caught his arm- trying to hide his flinch at the sudden movement.
"Davey....David, don't. Yer won't do no good, ya just get yourself beat up too."
"Well if that's what it takes-"
"Davey. P....Please just stay 'ere."
Dave sat back down, somewhat sad and reluctant, and they sat in silence for a time.
"You's don't deserve to die, Jack. Don't let them get to you."
Looking up slowly, Jack smiled- the kind of smile he would normally hide, or the one he wore while blushing. Then, he reached towards Dave's hand.
"Thanks, Dave, ya really are a....pal."
Davey focused his gaze intently on the floorboards, lips frowned, opened, closed, blew out a laboured breath. Previously furrowed brows deepened further.
Chuckling hurt, but Jack thought it was worth it. Reaching up to rest his hand on Dave's jaw, he sat up slightly further. He turned the boys face toward him.
They looked at each other tenderly, taking in each feature and strand of hair they were both so in love with.
Then, Davey leaned forward and pressed a kiss to the top of Jacks forehead, smiling against his skin.
He pulled back and Jack instantly grabbed his waist and pulled him in for a long needed hug.
So, I have some personal first on my phone, for my own personal enjoyment. And, I was really happy with this one, so I decided to post it here.
Fallon Morrow is one of my OC's for my few pairings. As I have a few SoA crushes. Hale being one of them, and I decided that being the daughter of Clay would make it interesting.
Anywho, here is my fic. Kinda proud of it, though know it's not the best. Been struggling to wrote for a while. But, before I continue yapping too much;
--------------
The moments shots started getting fired outside of Half-Sack's wake, Fallon switched straight to alert mode. She saw the van and dipped by Jacob Hale's car. Whipping out her own gun, she went to the end of it to shoot at the wheels of the van. Before she could, however, she saw Hale standing in the middle of the road. She gave up the gun and ran for David, tackling him out of the way just in time for the van to pass. Though, not without receiving a bullet in the back of her shoulder. She let out a strangled cry of pain, as Hale processed everything all at once.
"What the hell were you thinking?" Hale hissed, moving to help her.
"I was thinking I wasn't about to let you die." Fallon seethe through her pain.
"Clay will have my ass, you getting hurt saving me. I'm a cop. It's my duty."
"Oh, blow me." She huffed, whincing." I'm a big girl, Davey. I can make my own decisions. And I was not about to let you die."
"Davey!" Jacob's voice came.
"Over here." He answered. Jacob rounded the corner to see them.
"You okay, little brother?"
"I am. Thanks to Fallon."
"What do you mean, 'thanks to Fallon'? It's her damn family that caused this in the first place."
"Yeah, because we really want people coming by our brothers' wakes and shooting people up and nearly killing the people we love. All our fault." It did not escape David's notice that she used those choice words.
"Fallon!" Clay's voiced intervened. Fallon sighed.
"Can I pass out?" She groaned.
"I'd hope not." The Deputy's concerned reply came." Over here, Clay."
Clay was not impressed when he reached them. He was mad at Fallon for what she did, mad at Hale for being the guy his daughter loved and mad at Jake for standing there and not drawing attention to her sooner. His daughter was shot!
"Are you okay, baby?" Clay asked, stilling his rage.
"Yeah. Totally worth it. Would like this bullet out though." She gave him the thumbs up. He shook his head.
"You could have been killed."
"I agree. You shouldn't ha-" David started.
"You'd be dead if she didn't do that, Davey!"
"Oh, now you appreciate me?" Fallon scoffed.
"I-" The older Hale stopped himself short." Of all the people, it had to be you."
"I only saved the life of his only sibling." Fallon shrugged at Clay.
-------
The next day brought better tidings. The bullet had been removed from Fallon's shoulder, the boys had found out who ordered the drive by and the Charming Police Department still had its Deputy. Fallon was very pleased. She was being discharged when he came to see her.
"Hey, David. How are you doing?" She smiled. He shook his head, giving his own smile.
"You're the one that took a bullet for me, and you're asking how I am?"
"It was a stressful night. And, must have been a stressful day at the station, right?" She rolled her eyes.
"Yeah, was a bit. More worried about you, though. How's the shoulder?"
"Sore. But, should be well on the way to mending, with the obstruction out."
"You need a ride home?"
"Can do. I haven't called dad yet. Or mum."
Hale opened the door for her, and she got into his truck. Both were happy to be able to do so. Hale was close to having been killed, being that he stood in the road not to be moved easily. Hence why Fallon took the initiative to tackle him to safety.
"Thank you, by the way. For saving me." David broke the silence.
"No problem."
"Why did you save me?" Fallon froze, not expecting this question. After a moment, she offered an answer.
"You were standing in the middle of the road. I had the opportunity to prevent you getting hurt. Seemed right."
"Are your family okay?"
"Yeah, they were fairly clear of the shots. I'm glad to say."
"Any information on the shooter?"
"I don't know, yet. And even if I did, I'm probably not supposed to tell you, Deputy."
"Well. Someone comes into town, nearly killing the people I love, I'd like to know what that's about."
"I thought Jake was okay?" Fallon frowned. David smirked.
"He's fine. Just like your family." He spoke, pulling into her driveway.
"You've lost me."
"Our families weren't the loved ones we could have lost last night."
David saw the way that her confusion turned into a basful gulp. Just like Clay hated the feelings she had for him, Jake hated the feelings he suspected David had for her. David had never truly acted, or even fully acknowledged them, as she was the Princess of SAMCRO. The one thing he loathed about Charming. But here she was.
"Maybe not." She quietly agreed, playing with her fingers.
"You didn't save me because you had the opportunity."
"Actually, I did. If I didn't have the opportunity, there would have been a very interesting attempt." She corrected.
"Still, it wasn't just the opportunity that possessed you to take a bullet for me. Or risk it." Fallon sighed.
"No."
"Maybe SAMCRO isn't all bad." Hale said.
Before Fallon could say anything else, Hale leaned over and kissed her. She was surprised at the contact, but couldn't be so for long. The man she loved and nearly lost was kissing her, so she shifted her body in order to better her ability to return his kiss.
After feeling her shift, David brought a hand to her waist, whilst the other held her cheek. In turn, Fallon wrapped her arms around his neck.
Then, from there, it started heating up. David pulled the young girl into his lap - the kiss now a heavy make out session. Remembering the state of his vehicle, Hale then opened his door, and carried Fallon to her house. Once inside, the two began peeling off clothes, with Fallon' back often being pressed up against a wall - for David exuded a dominance.
Eventually, he picked her up and supported her against a wall, and proceeded to make love to her against it. It felt right and perfect to both. Maybe SAMCRO was the best thing that happened to him.
(A/N): I decided to do some really simple and classic fluff after all the stuff in the last Oneshot. Hopefully, this one won't take me a literal MONTH. Hope y'all like it!! <33
AUs:
- Modern
- Coffee Shop
- College
Jack POV:
Jack is a hopeless romantic. A hidden one for the most part, but a hopeless romantic nonetheless.
Truth be told, he's never been in too many relationships, at least not ones that lasted long. He's liked a few girls before, boys too, and even dated a few. But they lasted 3 months, tops. His record for the quickest breakup was after 5 hours when the person found another person to dote on.
Despite bad experiences like that, Jack remains infatuated with love and the idea of soulmates. He listens to romantic songs on repeat, would always be ready to lend you a romcom, and daydreams about perfect dates with some fill-in-the-blank person when he's supposed to be studying Art History.
But lately, that blank template has been gaining more qualities of a certain boy from school. A certain boy with dark brown curly hair, with an adorable hooked nose, with olive-green eyes and a shy smile.
The moment his mind finally puts the pieces of the person together, he shoots up from laying down in his bed. He quickly pauses the music and struggles to unlock his phone out of a mix of confusion and excitement.
He scrolls through his contacts to the K section, clicking on Katherine's contact and pressing the facetime button. "Pick up, Kath..." he nervously mutters.
Suddenly, her face appears on the screen, "Hey, Jack! What's up?" she then notices the half vacant, half nervous expression his face is showing.
"You doin' okay?" Kath asks, brows furrowed.
"Huh? Yeah! I uhhhh..." Kath waits patiently, knowing his ADHD makes him lose his train of thought all too easily.
"Right! So, you're the only one who knows about me bein' kind of a hopeless romantic..." Jack looks down slightly, and Katherine giggles, knowing his embarrassment around loving love.
"What? Does big ole Jack Kelly have a crush?"
"I don't know!" he gives an exasperated sigh, "Maybe!"
"Okay, okay, calm down cowboy. Now which lucky person has caught your eye this time?" Jack mutters something incoherent below his breath. "What? I can't hear ya."
"Davey Jacobs."
Davey POV:
Davey sighs, taking a look at his computer.
A 2000 word essay on a topic of his choice for History due in 1 month. He knows how much time he has to finish this, and he knows that he could wait until a week until it's due to start it and still finish it on time perfectly, but no matter the assignment, there would always be a thought gnawing at the back of his brain telling him he NEEDS to get it done right now. And so he does. But he knows he needs coffee to do so.
Davey carefully slips his computer into his crammed backpack, as well as his wallet. He plans on going to his favorite cafe. The coffee there tastes like shit (though he would never admit it), but he knows the staff, and some of the baristas even attend his school. There was one that stood out to him, a certain Jack Kelly
Davey isn't sure what's so interesting about the creative student. It could be his heavy 'Hatten accent, or maybe it's his enthusiastic puppy dog energy about anything. It's kind of... adorable, I guess. He looks down at the ground while walking, trying his best to hide his red face. Davey doesn't swear much, but fuuuuuck.
He likes Jack Kelly. Jack Kelly of all people. The guy who accidentally SHARPENED HIS FINGER IN A PENCIL SHARPENER ONCE. Davey sighs, Jack may be an idiot, but no one can deny that it's charming in a way. He has tons of golden retriever energy.
Davey doesn't know what to do.
He sits down in a corner booth to avoid as much human contact as possible. He opens up his laptop and opens the tabs needed for his project. He slips on a pair of noise-cancelling headphones and attempts to block out the thoughts of Jack Kelly. The essay is number one priority right now. Suddenly, Davey sees a looming figure out of the corner of his eye. He snaps his neck up to see...
Oh no.
Fudge.
"What can I get for ya, darlin'"
Jack POV:
Davey's face heats up. I don't really consider this a win, considering that's the way most people react when I call them darling. What can I say? It's a habit of mine.
"U-uhm..maybe-" he stutters quietly.
I speak up to help him out a bit, "I've seen you here before. You always order the hot chocolate with 2 pumps of espresso, right?" He squeaks out a yes.
"Comin right up, doll" his face lights up a bright red again.
Shit. Did I mess it up? Is he uncomfortable with those terms? I come from southern roots, which has pros and cons. The pros are: I'm really resilient, my tea is sweetened to PERFECTION, and I can smell when it's going to rain. Cons: The situation that just unfolded.
As I enter the kitchen area, I sigh. I come on way too strong. I quickly make Davey's order, after all, I did memorize it. I look at the plain hot chocolate. Needs a little something. He seems like the spicy sweet kinda guy, so I carefully add a good amount of whipped cream, and sprinkle some cinnamon on top. I really shouldn't be bringing favoritism into my work, but Dave should be an exception.
Being careful not to spill my masterpiece built out of hot chocolate and whipped cream, I bring it to Davey, who seems very deep in thought, staring at his computer. Trying not to disturb him, I set the drink gently down, then I lift one of his headphones.
"Whatcha doin' Dave?"
He jumps, turning red once AGAIN. "Jesus Christ, bud, got some sorta skin reddening condition?"
"Wh- I- You-" He sputters before regaining his composure, "One, none of your business, two, none of your business."
I feign a wound and put my hand over my chest, "Davey Jacobs! So rude!" I put my arm over my forehead and sigh dramatically, then sneak a peek at him. He's laughing a little. I grin, so he doesn't hate me! Whew!
A few hours,10 drink orders and slightly too loud joking and laughing later, Davey's still here, working on some big project. At this point I've stopped charging him and have just been paying for them myself. I make my way to his table once more.
I notice his cup is empty, "Refill?" I ask, he nods. That's when I notice the bags under his red eyes. I walk back a bit and lean on his table. "You need to sleep, Dave." He shakes his head as a response and I sigh.
I make my way to the kitchen and decide to not add caffeine in this. He needs it. My hands go on autopilot as I start to think about him. He's just so... pretty.
I bite my lip. Should I...? Ah, fuck it, I'm almost done with my shift. I grab a scrap of paper and a pen and scrawl my number, with the message
'Call me ;P'
Beside it. I take a deep breath and carefully balance the cup all the way to Davey's corner booth. The sight is adorable. Davey is laying down on the table, asleep, head tilted to one side, face illuminated by the computer screen. I smile gently.
All I think about for the rest of the night is that sight. As I sit in bed, drawing the scene, I hear a ding from my phone. I open texts and see from an unknown number:
Hey, Jack?
It's Davey.
The student from the coffee shop.
I grin.
Hey Dave :P
I quickly change his contact to <3 Dave <3 with my recent drawing of him as the profile picture.
Before I know it, we're talking about everything. It's honestly so much easier texting than actually interacting with people. My brain decides to peace out for a long minute, and my hands automatically do the typing. Bad decision. Why? Because I barely even notice when I hit send.
Do you wanna go on a date with me? I was thinking about getting froyo, and maybe watching a cheesy romcom. Whaddya say, Dave?
I can only watch, petrified, as I see...
<3 Dave <3 is typing...
(A/N):
Hope y'all like this! Pt. 2 will be their date!! btw no one has really interacted or requested fanfics, so if you could vote for this or request something, that would really make me happy.
One of Ours
Cross Posted to AO3
It was an unfortunate series of events that moved the Jacobs family from Ohio to New York, but it came with a pay rise for Mayer, a new job for Esther, and a new school for their three children. All three had been struggling at their previous school, bullied for being Jewish, and Esther had high hopes that they would get on better in a state with many more Jewish people around.
Davey and Sarah were fifteen, Les was twelve and unknown to their parents, they were all relieved to be moving to New York- or, back to New York, considering they all had memories of living there before. Sarah called it her past life, Davey just called them memories, without giving it a name that had such huge connotations as Sarah’s did. Les didn’t call it anything, because he was twelve and not yet fully aware of the fact that it set them apart from everyone else.
“It’s called ‘The World’,” Esther was explaining to Sarah as Davey came down the stairs. He still wasn’t used to having a house with two floors, or a room to himself, despite it having been nearly a week since they had moved in.
“It’s run by a man named Joseph Pulitzer, a descendent of the Pulitzer Prize man- morning David.”
“Good morning, mama,” he replied, sitting next to Sarah.
“I was just telling Sarah about your new high school. It’ll be good to know some things before you get there, won’t it?”
Davey mustered up a smile and nodded, biting into his toast despite the nerves churning in his stomach that threatened to send anything he ate back up. Sarah squeezed his arm under the table, smiling at him hopefully. He knew what she was thinking- in the memories the three of them shared Pulitzer had also been named Joseph, and Sarah had been utterly in love with his daughter. If they weren’t the only ones, maybe Katherine went to their high school as well.
Les borderline tumbled down the stairs and dropped into the chair on Sarah’s other side, “Good morning, mama!” he chirped cheerfully, taking the toast she set in front of him and devouring it.
“You seem excited.” Esther commented, looking relieved- even if the twins were nervous, she knew they would have each other, Les on the other hand was only in middle school, and would be alone surrounded by people he didn’t know.
“I am!” Les replied, around a mouthful of toast that made Davey grimace, “I can’t wait to meet my friends!”
Esther laughed, ruffling his hair, the statement meant nothing to her, just the ramblings of her excited son. Davey and Sarah knew that he was convinced that they would meet the people they had known before- it had been their topic of discussion last night- and neither of them had the heart to point out to their brother that they might be the only three that remembered.
Breakfast was finished, and Esther hurried the three of them out of the house, dropping kisses on cheeks and wishing them a good first day as she walked in the opposite direction to them. Together, they watched her hurry off- she had started working at a local bakery partway through their first week and was used to it by now. As she got out of sight, they turned as one and began walking towards the school.
Their father had made them walk to the gates and back multiple times over the previous few days, so they knew where they were going.
“Davey!” Les gasped, tugging on his sleeve like he did in the memories, the memories where he was much younger, “It’s the lodging house!”
And it was. The building had barely changed, save for some wear and tear and the sign that now read ‘Kloppman’s home for boys’ instead of ‘Duane Street Lodging House.’ As if on cue, a group of boys tumbled out of the door and began walking in the same direction they had been.
Les stood on his tiptoes, glancing between all the boys, trying to see anyone he recognised. Davey and Sarah exchanged a slightly horrified glance- it had been fine thinking about meeting the other people they remembered in abstract, but the sudden idea that it could be very real wasn’t something that either of them had really been prepared for.
“Les,” Sarah said, pulling him back from where he seemed to be about to run into the fray, “you have to be careful. They might not remember.”
His little face took on a much sombre look, “I know. I’m not supposed to know their names unless they say something first.”
She nodded and squeezed his hand, “If you were friends last time, I’m sure you’ll get along this time too.”
He grinned up at her and nodded, with that the three of them began to walk again, no more words exchanged until they had left Les at the gates of the middle school, gaining a promise from him to wait for them and not walk home on his own.
“Do you really think that?” Davey asked quietly, “That if we were friends last time, we’ll be friends this time?”
“Why wouldn’t we be?”
“We only became friends with them last time because we had the same job. They wouldn’t have cared about me if I hadn’t joined the newsboys.”
Sarah hugged him, “You’re so pessimistic. Try and look on the bright side, ok?”
He sighed, “Yeah, ok.”
They went to the school office, following helpful signs, to collect their schedules- and apparently, someone who would show them to first period if nothing else. The secretary introduced herself as ‘Hannah, you don’t need to call me miss anything’ and handed them their schedules with a smile and a basic explanation of the shape of the school.
“It used to be the headquarters for ‘The World’ newspaper, so the main body was set out like offices, but there was some reworking before the school was opened, so there’s more classrooms- and obviously the newer parts were built to be a school.”
Davey didn’t say anything, so Sarah took over the polite smiling and responses until they were told to sit in the waiting room and wait for the people who would be showing them around this morning.
“What’s up with you?” she asked quietly, pretending to be comparing their schedules, “You’re never like this.”
“I know her,” Davey replied, the same volume, “She was one of Pulitzer’s… I don’t know, secretaries?”
“Weird.”
“Do you think…”
“No. No way, she didn’t seem to recognise you.”
“Maybe she’s had practice.”
“If she’s here, who else- “
Sarah was cut off by two people entering the office kind of loudly,
“Hi Hannah!” the boy called, leaning on her desk and grinning brilliantly, “You are looking radiant as always.”
“Romeo.” The twins whispered in unison, thankfully not loud enough for either him, or his friend to here.
“Sarah! David!” Hannah called, “Come here, please.”
They did, smiling at Romeo, and the girl who turned out to be Hotshot, while trying not to let the recognition show through. Neither of them seemed at all surprised to see the two of them, or as if they recognised them and Davey wasn’t quite sure if that was a relief or not.
“Alright.” Hannah clapped her hands, “Sarah, this is Romeo, he’s gonna stick with you for the morning and hand you over to Mike for the afternoon. David, this is Niamh- “
“Hotshot.” Niamh interjected,
“-Hotshot, yes, and she will be with you for first period, then she’ll hand you over to Katherine for the afternoon. Ok?”
They both nodded their understanding and went to stand with their assigned partner, for lack of a better word. Sarah gave her brother an encouraging smile, one that said he could do this, even if he was almost completely convinced, he couldn’t.
They split up almost immediately, with Romeo leading Sarah down one corridor soon after the exited the office, and Hotshot continuing straight on. She didn’t say much, pointing out things Davey would want to remember as they passed, and glancing back every so often to check that he was still there, which was fine by Davey as he had never been particularly good at small talk, and it gave him time to think.
He hadn’t got many memories of Hotshot, just that she had been Spot’s second and he had sometimes had to pass messages through her in order to speak to Spot. She hadn’t been particularly talkative last time either, from what he vaguely remembered, but then none of Brooklyn had- she still had the Brooklyn accent, even at a school in Manhattan. “This is first period,” she said, gesturing at a door that was marked ‘Bi3’ “Biology.” She pushed the door open and walked in, obviously expecting Davey to follow. The teacher who turned and smiled at them wasn’t at all recognisable to Davey, which he found slightly relieving, and she welcomed him to the class, before directing him to sit next to Hotshot at the back- the only spare seat.
*
A few corridors over, Sarah was behind Romeo in math. Before they had gone in, he had warned her that the teacher wasn’t particularly nice and that they called him ‘Snyder the Spider’ behind his back. The words had sent a chill up her spine- her memories of the newsies explaining the Refuge to her and her parents were harsh, sharp, and awful. The memories of even one of the littles lifting up his shirt to reveal an ugly scar were too embedded in her head to ever forget.
“Miss Jacobs, I assume?” Snyder had said as they entered, smiling at her in a way that made her realise that no matter what Romeo or Hotshot or Hannah remembered, Snyder had all his previous memories and he had connected her to Davey immediately.
“Yes sir.” She replied brightly, “Where would you like me to sit.”
He gestured at the empty seat behind Romeo, who was sitting next to another one she recognised, even if she couldn’t call his name to mind- both of them were looking at her worriedly, a warning not to incite his anger. She sat down and pulled out her notebook and pencil case, wondering if anyone was going to sit next to her, or if she was destined to sit alone for the rest of the year.
“Alright,” Snyder said, “Quadratics.”
As if on cue, the door was flung open and someone slid in neatly- a baseball cap sat backwards on top of red hair, bright enough that she knew immediately it was Albert.
“DaSilva.” Snyder snapped. “That’s the second time this week. Detention.”
“Yes, sir.” Albert replied, grinning cheekily, and making his way across the room to flop into the seat next to Sarah, “Morning Romeo, Elmer, new girl.”
Elmer- that was his name.
“Hi,” she said, “I’m Sarah Jacobs.”
“Albert DaSilva.” He replied and shook her hand politely. At the front of the classroom, Snyder was writing questions on the board. “You met Romeo and Elmer?”
“Romeo’s showing me around this morning.”
“Damn, be prepared to get lost.”
“Shut up.” Romeo replied, but he was laughing, “I’m not that bad.”
“I’m Elmer,” Elmer said turning around. “Ignore these two idiots, honestly, and don’t worry about math too much, we have another teacher more often than we have the Spider, so she actually teaches us.”
That was actually something of a relief, and she thanked him for the information, at which he nodded, and turned back around before Snyder did- she was remembering Jack saying that you didn’t give Snyder a chance to yell at you, you did everything right before he could tell you.
The class went silent as Snyder turned around, instructed them to do the twenty questions he had written up and left. The silence remained for a good five minutes and then the classroom almost erupted into noise.
Sarah sat back, copied down the questions, and wondered if the Katherine that would be showing Davey around would be her Katherine.
*
As it turned out, it was in fact Sarah’s Katherine that Hotshot passed Davey off to after Biology- he barely held in the urge to shout her name, hug her, or do something else that would scare her off. Her fiery hair stood out from where she was leaning against the white walls, a pink folder hugged to her chest with one arm, while she checked her phone. She smiled up at the two of them when Hotshot called out her name, and moved towards them. She was taller than Davey remembered, almost as tall as him, but aside from that she seemed exactly the same. He had known her the best out of the few people had seen so far, and he found that it actually ached not to be able to reach out, brush her hair off her shoulder, hug her, lean into her and just resume the comfortable affection that they had had last time.
“English?”
“Huh?”
“I said, are you ready for English?” she repeated, smiling gently, and he almost thought she was going to reach out and put a hand on his shoulder. She didn’t, and he nodded, trying not to show his disappointment, and wondering if he could warn Sarah about how it felt.
Like Hotshot, Kath pointed out a few things he should remember- the lockers, the nurse’s office- and unlike Hotshot, she kept up a steady stream of conversation that Davey wasn’t really expected to contribute to, only interrupted by people greeting her, where she would pause and introduce them to Davey. By the time they reached English, Davey had been told more names than he thought he could ever really remember, and maybe he was right because they all flew out of his head immediately when he was faced with the English teacher. Denton.
The English teacher was Bryan Denton, and he could have laughed at that if it wouldn’t have got him several questioning glances.
“David Jacobs?” Denton asked brightly, moving towards him to shake his hand firmly, “It’s a pleasure to have you in this class, please- take a seat.”
Slightly tongue tied and reminded of the unfortunate crush he remembered having on Denton, Davey followed Katherine and sat down next to her, remembering to ask if the seat was empty before he collapsed into it.
“Alright,” Denton said, “I just need to go grab some photocopies, so talk amongst yourselves for a bit.” Katherine smiled at him and turned around to talk to someone behind them, who turned out to be Spot, much to Davey’s surprise- they were introduced, and then Spot pulled Katherine into a conversation that seemed to need a lot of background knowledge to follow, so Davey pulled out his phone instead. To Sarah: I’ve found Katherine and Spot, as well as Hotshot. From Sarah: I’ve found Romeo, Elmer, Albert, Specs and Jack. He stared down at his phone, willing the words to make sense. She had found Jack- his Jack.
From Sarah: I think Romeo and Specs are dating and I know Albert and Elmer are dating because they started making out as soon as they saw each other. They were both avoiding the obvious topic, but it was nice to know that they were surrounded by people they had known. To Sarah: I’m pretty sure they were dating last time as well, subtlety had never been Albert’s strong point. He got a laughing emoji in response, and didn’t have time to send anything else as Denton re-entered the room, waving a load of paper triumphantly, “I have the photocopies.” The lesson began there, they were looking at The Great Gatsby, which Davey had covered at his old school only a few years prior, so he felt comfortable enough to relax slightly. Or relax as much as he could with Spot’s eyes boring holes into the back of his head. The one time he glanced around, Spot made direct eye contact and held it until he turned back. Spot wasn’t any less terrifying in the twenty first century it seemed. * Katherine seemed to be expecting Davey to eat lunch with her and her group and based on the interactions she had had with people that Davey recognised, he was pretty certain that Sarah would be eating with her group as well. He went with her, stopped by the small greetings from people that he had gotten used to by walking around with her, and some of them even remembered him, remembered his name and were actually interested in how his day had gone so far. They went through the lunch room, Katherine pausing at one table to talk to some people- two of whom Davey recognised as Bill and Darcy- but kept going after she had gotten the information she wanted, past all the other tables and outside and towards a tree. A tree that already had a large gathering of people under it- including Sarah who jumped to her feet as soon as she saw him and pulled him towards where she was sitting. Where she was sitting, next to Jack. “Hey,” Jack greeted as Sarah pulled him down onto the grass, “You must be Davey, Sarah said you were somewhere around here.” The utter lack of recognition in Jack’s friendly tone went like an arrow straight to Davey’s heart, and he somehow found it in himself to smile politely and ask who Jack was. “I’m Jack.” Jack told him, “Jack Kelly, and I live at Kloppman’s with most of these idiots.” “We walked past that on our way this morning,” Davey said, desperately trying to keep the conversation as long as possible. “Yeah, Sarah said, she said you’ve got a younger brother too?” “Uh, yeah- Les, he’s twelve and at the middle school.” “Yeah, my brother Crutchie’s there too, he’s thirteen, though.” Davey smiled, both at the fact that Jack still considered Crutchie his brother, and at the fact that Les would be able to make at least one friend, even if nobody outside of the three of them remembered the previous century. “Speaking of Les,” he said, and pulled out his phone to discover that Les was ahead of him and had already texted. From Les: im fine, ive made friends, im being shown around From Les: ALSO ULL NEVER GUESS WHO I MET To Les: Was it Crutchie? From Les: YESS!!! From Les: and he remembers Davey paused staring at Les’ final text, a text that in three short words had brought something that might have been hope to sit in Davey’s chest. “Sarah?” “Yeah?” “Has Les texted you?” “Yeah, he said he made friends with Jack’s brother.” They both looked up at each other, and he could see that Les had in fact imparted the important piece of information to Sarah as well. She raised her eyebrows. Davey went back to his conversation with Jack. Looking around, he could see most of the previous newsies that had been their age in the little group under the tree. Race and Spot were next to each other, arguing over something that he couldn’t quite hear, Sarah was sat with Katherine, Smalls, Sniper, and the twins- Mike and Ike- on the other side of Jack was Buttons, Tommy Boy, Henry, Blink and Mush, Hotshot was next to Spot, but not involved in the argument, instead talking to Albert, Elmer, Romeo, Specs, and Finch. It was just as chaotic as he remembered the lodging house being and it was oddly perfect for him, someone who hated loud noises and crowds. * They picked Les up at the gates of the middle school, along with Jack and Race who had accompanied them to grab Crutchie- the rest of the group, Jack explained, just left when they were let out and they all reconvened at Kloppman’s, otherwise they’d be waiting on the school grounds for ages and it was sometimes hard to know when they had everyone. Crutchie beamed at the four of them as they approached and was quick to introduce everyone who didn’t already know each other. “You guys wanna come back to Kloppman’s with us?” Jack offered, one arm slung over Crutchie’s shoulders, “We generally do homework and stuff together.” Les wanted to say yes, it was obvious in his face, but… “Mama asked us to have dinner going when she got home.” Sarah pointed out gently, “Maybe another time.” Les and Crutchie looked sorely disappointed by that, and maybe Davey was flattering himself, but he thought Jack looked a little disappointed too. They said their goodbyes, Les hugged everyone because he was just like that, the three Jacobs headed back to their little house, and the other three headed to their home. Jack would never have admitted it to anyone, but he did glance back multiple times until they were out of sight, hoping that they might change their minds. The Jacobs weren’t aware of Jack’s glances, instead too focused on getting back to their house where they would be free to discuss the weirdness that had gone down on their first day. Sarah locked the door and dropped her bag, rounding on Les, “You’re certain? You’re certain that Crutchie remembers?” Les nodded frantically, “he brought up an inside joke from before and I finished it and we both just knew!” The twins exchanged a glance, both hoping that the other would know what to do about the situation, and- when no solution came- the three of them just fell about laughing. There wasn’t really anything else to do in such a situation, it wasn’t like there was a handbook entitled ‘What to do when your friends don’t remember their past lives’ or anything, no matter how much Davey thought it would help. “Holy shit.” Sarah finally breathed out, “This is insane.” “Yep.” “Yep.” They looked at each other and started laughing again. * Back at the lodging house- which was still how most of them thought of it, despite the fact that it hadn’t been called that in over a century- Crutchie was sitting in the middle of a circle as he explained how Les also remembered, but he didn’t think that the twins remembered because Les hadn’t said anything, and he hadn’t seen any recognition in their eyes. Other people mumbled their agreements at that, they hadn’t seen any recognition from the Jacobs either. “I don’t know,” Katherine argued, “I’m pretty sure Davey at least recognised me from the way he kind of stared when Hotshot introduced me.” “Maybe he was just doing that ‘cos he thinks your hot.” Spot offered from Race’s bunk, where he was currently curled up with Race. “Funny.” “Just saying.” “Well don’t.” Jack muttered, ignoring the amused looks that gained from most of the older members. Spot shrugged in response, “Kloppman’s gonna come and tell us off for not working soon.” There were a series of groans and objections from around the room, but people stood up and moved to their desks or onto their beds, depending on how they preferred to work, and by the time Kloppman walked in everyone was doing something appropriate- even if they were occasionally mentioning the three Jacobs’s siblings. “What’s this about then?” Kloppman asked gently, sitting down next to Jack on his bunk, “There’s some new kids,” he glanced up, “you remember Davey? Davey Jacobs?” Kloppman resisted the urge to ask how he could have forgotten with Jack drawing him every few days, and instead just nodded. “Him, and Sarah, his twin, and Les- you remember Les- they joined our schools today.” Kloppman raised an eyebrow, unphased. He had met too many people that he had known before to be surprised when another one showed up, in all honesty he was almost convinced that they were all gravitating towards New York in some way- call it fate, destiny, a horse- they would all be there eventually. “Bring them ‘round.” He said to Jack, patted his knee and eased himself up to check in on the littles, who were primarily looked after by Miss Medda these days, but it was good to keep up with them for when they moved up. “Yeah,” Jack sighed, watching him go. “It would probably help if they remembered.” * “Yeah,” Les sighed from where he was cutting carrots at the table, “I’m pretty sure they don’t remember, that was what Crutchie implied before you guys arrived.” Davey sighed, resigned, “I mean, I’d already worked that out, but…” “It kinda sucks?” Les finished, “Yeah, it kinda sucks.” Esther and Mayer arrived home at that point, thanked their children for starting dinner and the conversation about past lives, memories and people they knew that didn’t know them, had to be dropped in favour of more parent-friendly conversations like how was your first day at school? And did you make any friends? Which classes did you enjoy? Were the teachers nice? Did you find your way around alright? That became a sort of pattern for the rest of their week, they would walk to school, drop Les at the gates, continue walking to school where they might be joined by one of Kloppman’s boys or their extended group, split up for classes which they both all had with at least one of said extended group, regroup for lunch, under the tree, finish classes, walk to the middle school with at least Jack and sometimes a few others, collect Les and Crutchie, say goodbye to Jack and Crutchie, reject Jack’s invitation, walk home and start on whatever their mother had planned for dinner while complaining about how much they wished the others remembered. And it followed into the next week, and the week after, until Sarah finally remembered to ask their parents if they could go over to Jack’s after school with their friends. That broke the pattern more than they could have anticipated when Esther gave them the go-ahead that morning. They walked to school, dropped Les and weren’t joined by anyone but that was fine because they were going to hang out with them after school, they split for classes, regrouped at lunch, by mutual agreement didn’t tell anyone they had been allowed to go over to their house- Sarah’s idea, she thought it would be funny to just say yes to Jack’s invitation with indication that was going to happen- spilt up again for afternoon classes and walked to the middle school with Jack and Katherine. “Do you wanna come over?” Jack asked, “Get something done on your homework with friends?” It was pretty obvious he was now just asking to be polite, because he didn’t think that they were going to say yes, but he had made a habit of asking everyday. “Yeah.” Sarah said. “That’s fine, I- wait what?” “Yeah,” Sarah repeated, trying not to laugh, “we’d love to.” Jack blinked at the three of them stunned for a couple of seconds, before a smile broke out across his face. Davey thought it looked like the sun was coming out, and he was taken breathless by the happiness that Jack displayed and the memory of when he had truly been in love with him- he thought that he might be able to fall in love with Jack again if he was given the chance. “Let’s go!” Jack said, looking happier than a child in a candy store- as happy as a child in a candy store who had been told everything was free. The five of them turned towards the home and crossed the road, Jack thundering ahead to yell the good news into the bunk room. Davey, Sarah and Les entered to loud obnoxious cheers- the loudest of which came from Race, because he was just like that. There was some laughter when Race just kept going after everyone had stopped, and more when Spot pushed him off the bunk, but they made space for the three of them, offered them blankets and fluffy socks because the floor was always cold no matter how high they turned the heat up. Kloppman came in at the usual time glanced around the room and stopped his gaze on Davey, “Davey Jacobs?” Davey jumped up automatically, “Yes, sir.” Kloppman stared at him for a second and then broke out into one of his rare complete smiles, “Isn’t it good to see you again?” and wrapped Davey up in a hug, shook hands with Sarah and swung Les around like he had done before. Davey stood in a minor amount of shock, “What do you mean again?” “Don’t you remember? 1899? The strike?” “I mean, yeah but I didn’t realise you did.” “Wait,” Jack cut in, “You and Sarah? You remember too?” “Yeah, we thought only Crutchie remembered.” Jack laughed, “We thought only Les remembered.” The volume suddenly picked up with everyone asking questions over each other, but Davey found he could only look at Jack- and Sarah for a brief second when he saw her leaning in to kiss Katherine. “Hey Mouth!” Spot called, and the angry eyes Davey had been faced with in English for the past few weeks were gone, replaced with an odd gentleness. “Welcome back.” “It’s good to be back.” Jack lunged at him suddenly, and he found himself with an armful of Cowboy, “I missed you,” Jack whispered, loud enough for only Davey to hear, “I missed you so much.” I missed you didn’t seem to cover Davey’s feelings, but he said it back anyway, because how else could he express feeling like a part of him that was missing had been returned now that he was holding Jack in his arms? There was no other way. He glanced around the room, Les and Crutchie were on one bunk with some of the other pre-teens, Sarah and Katherine were curled up next to Smalls and Sniper and everyone else was in their own little groups. Spot was the only one still watching them. “It’s good to be back.”
Crutchie and Religion, specifically Christianity
Alrighty!
In Newsies canon, there isn’t all that much said about religion. There are the nuns who hand out food and ask Elmer when they’ll “see him inside the church?”, to which he responds that “it’s bound to rain sooner or later”. The Jacobs boys, and thus whole family, (including Sarah because FITE ME), are canonically Jewish. There's that line that Jack says to Davey when the latter is trying to convince him to rejoin the strike: "If I wanted a sermon, I'd show up for church." But if I'm not mistaken, there isn't much else mentioned about it. As with most Disney stuff, religion stays mainly out of the story.
But as far as Crutchie goes, I have always headcanoned her to be Irish, with at least her dad as having immigrated directly from Ireland, and as such I headcanon him as being very Catholic. As such, I headcanon that he often took Crutchie and mom to mass whenever he could when she was little, but often because of his awful work schedule that he only adhered to to make sure his family was provided for, they often only got to go around holidays. But baby Crutchie enjoyed it. It was family time, and it took her to a beautiful place that was always full of lit candles and seemed to be full of magic... but then she got so sick, her dad took on extra work to pay the doctor bills, and then, one day, he left for work and never came back home, and they never went to church as a family again. Charlotte Sr (Crutchie is named after her mom) hadn’t cared for church when Crutchie’s dad was alive, and when it came right down to it, it was a very big sign of the family’s Irishness, which had ended up getting her husband killed, so they never went back.
Time passes, Charlie is abused, abandoned, and found by the newsboys. Sometimes she sneaks into the church to look around, but always feels bashful and out of place, like she doesn’t belong there, and isn’t wanted besides. But in her mind, church and God and Jesus are all connected to her father, and then, by further association, her mom. It’s all kind of tragic in a way. She’s curious about it all, but doesn’t know what to do.
In a more modern au, she doesn’t know what to believe, because everyone talks about this God who gives, but if he gives, why does he take, too? Why did he give her such a kind, good man as a father, then take him away and leave her with a woman who grows very quickly to hate her? Who says the worst kinds of things, that they would have all been better off if Charlie had died or never been born at all? Why did he give her life, and then, as her mom always says, make her take her father’s? Because Charlotte very vocally blames Charlie for her father’s death. What kind of a God says he loves his children, and then leaves them to suffer in such a way? She doesn’t understand. Her mom either keeps her or eventually puts her up for adoption, never to be seen again, and maybe Charlie makes friends everywhere she goes, but she loses them, too, as they are all adopted one by one, and she is left by herself again.
I have recently begun working on an au where Crutchie goes to a private Catholic high school, and as I was thinking through details, it just kept occurring to me just how much it might affect her, because the teachers and the priests and the nuns are all certain that what they believe is true, but Charlie just isn’t sure, and she will undoubtedly butt heads with them about it. And on top of all of this, she is at the very least queer, and definitely gender non-conforming, regardless of what her gender identity is at the moment, so that gets her in trouble and gives her more reason to feel ashamed and like any God that is is nothing more than a trickster, prankster, or sadist, determined to watch her struggle for who she is, ever was, and can ever be, and when it comes right down to it, she really isn’t sure how she feels about that.
The Jacobs at home (but mostly David and Sarah):
Okay so we all know that Davey comes out of his shell during the strike
This boy goes from literally bowing to Medda when he meets her to yelling at one of the most powerful men in New York in his own office
But he didn’t change his personality at home
At home, Davey is David
Les gets into the habit of calling him Davey when they’re working but he knows not to at home
Davey would be too American for his parents
Not even Davey originally liked being called Davey
He does now though because Jack is the one who gave him the name
One time David was walking with his father and he heard Romeo call his name
He ignored it because he didn’t want his father to know that “Davey” was referring to him
He apologized to Romeo the next day and he understood
David is quiet and respectful at home, leaving Sarah and Les to do most of the talking
He may have accidentally started one of the most talked about strikes of the last decade and shut down New York for almost twelve hours but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t follow orders at home
David and Sarah know how hard their parents work and they do their best to take the burden off of them
When they get home from selling/school/the factory, they take over the patchwork their mother takes in, insisting she lies down before dinner
(I have a whole series of headcanons to do with Esther but they’ll come in another post)
The twins are often up very late finishing this work
The thing David says at home most often is probably some variation of “yes, Ima” or “no, Aba”
This boy is SHY at home
It’s not because he’s nervous around his parents
It’s because he doesn’t want to cause them any stress at all
And despite his job and how he acts around his friends, he’s an introvert and likes to not have to speak
Sometimes he and Sarah take their sewing up to the roof and he doesn’t have any qualms about talking her ear off then
She loves it though
Katherine is actually the first of their friends to visit them at home, not Jack
Les wanted to go to the lodging house after selling but David had chores to do and promised to pick him up later
Katherine was there too and Les got tired so she offered to walk him home
David isn’t happy about it but Les doesn’t know that his brother is a little self conscious about where he lives when it comes to Katherine
Esther invites her in and she’s shocked at the dynamics of the family
David barely speaks above a whisper and if she wasn’t seeing it with her own two eyes, she never would have believed it
In fact, Jack doesn’t believe it when she asks him about it, assuming he had already been there
When Jack finally visits, he stops on the way home to see Katherine and they have a wtf moment together
David and Sarah do their best to mind Les
They read him a bedtime story every night
David reads the narration and Sarah does the characters’ voices
They don’t have many books so they often read stories Les has heard a thousand times
He doesn’t care though because he just likes to listen to his siblings’ voices as he drifts off to sleep
David helps his mother cook and clean (although there isn’t much to clean in the two room apartment)
Sarah does too but she knows David likes cooking (it’s a quiet, calm activity with their mother telling him exactly what to do; it gives his brain a rest and just lets him do without thinking) so she gets ahead on the patchwork while he helps make dinner
After the injury, David is the one who helps Mayer get up and down the five flights of stairs
This usually happens about four times a day and it’s exhausting
But he never says a word about it because he knows his father would just feel guilty and he doesn’t want that
There’s only one bed in the Jacobs’ apartment
It’s not small by any means but it can’t fit all five of them
Their parents sleep on it with Sarah and Les
Sarah always tries to get David to take her spot but he refuses
He would literally rather lay on the floor next to Sarah than take her spot on the bed
Sarah gives up eventually because there’s no use in both of them being sore and achy all the time
Les sleeps on the bed too but once he gets bigger they’re going to have to figure something out because four full grown people can’t fit on it
David has a thin pad to sleep on and a pillow
Sometimes he’s so tired that all he wants to do is collapse on the bed with no one else on it but he would never say anything
Their parents already feel guilty about it and he won’t let himself add to it
Sarah and David do everything in their power to protect Les from knowing just how dire their situation is
Sure, he knows they had to drop out of school to sell papers but he doesn’t know that it’s a struggle to put food on the table
Some weeks are better than others
During the weeks that every headline is boring or rent is due, David and Sarah secretly take turns eating
They would both rather let the other one have all the food but they don’t argue over it much because they know that if one of them isn’t eating that meant that one of them isn’t going to be able to work
They eat in the morning with the family and then switch on and off who eats depending on the day
This doesn’t happen all the time but it happens more frequently than they’d like to admit
Their mother doesn’t leave the tenement much (again, I’ll explain in another post) so the twins do most of the shopping
Because of this, they can trick their parents into thinking they ate something they didn’t
“Sarah, you’re not eating dinner?” “Sorry, Aba, I was so hungry that I ate an apple and a lot of bread on the way home. I’m not hungry anymore. Maybe I’ll eat later.”
“David, you only put out four plates.” “Jack and I had a late lunch at Jacobi’s, Ima.”
Sarah sometimes gets into heated arguments with their parents if she thinks something is unfair
The twins don’t fight often but when they do they make sure no one else knows
They wait until everyone else is asleep and go up to the roof
The maddest Sarah ever gets at David is when he doesn’t stand up for himself to their parents
“You led a rally of hundreds of newsies and you can’t tell Ima that her expectations are unfair?” “None of those newsies gave birth to me, Sarah.”
But at the end of the day they’re a team and they know their job is to take care of their family
I have a lot more but this is already too long so I’ll do them another time
Note
Javid as high school teachers that seem like they hate each other when really are dating and are just being playful. Sorry if that’s confusing
Here it is! Sorry that this took way longer than it should have. Also it's kiiiiiiiinda bad so there's that 😅😅 Oh and dw it wasn't confusing at all.
I don't 100% know how schools in america work so I'm basing on stuff I've read in various fanfiction and I also took a lot of creative liberty so hopefully that's alright.
It was no secret to the students of The World High that there was something going on between Mr. Jacobs and Mr. Kelly. And to them, it wasn’t the good kind of something. As far as they know, the two of them loathed each other. No one knew how the rivalry started, but rumour has it that it started because Mr. Kelly had hidden a few of Mr. Jacobs’ personal items as a prank. Mr. Jacobs got so annoyed at this that it led him to prank Mr. Kelly in retaliation. This then led to Mr. Kelly pranking him back, until it had ultimately led to a full-out war between the two.
“Shylock had been holding a grudge against Antonio,” Davey states, turning to the next slide on his PowerPoint presentation, “but despite that, he agrees to lend him three thousand ducats.” He took a quick glance around the room. Most of his students looked bored out of their minds, save for the few that were eagerly taking notes. Davey couldn’t blame them, though. The Merchant of Venice was a lot less interesting compared to Shakespeare’s more popular works. Still, he carried on with his lesson. The sooner they finish The Merchant of Venice, the sooner they’ll be able to talk about the works of Jane Austen (Davey’s favourite topic).
“And that’s it for today. We will finish this discussion by tomorrow, hopefully, and afterwards we’ll be having a quiz.” The students let out a cacophony of groans and complaints. Of course, that was the moment Jack chose to come through the door.
“Hey Jacobs we- whoa,” He paused and took a brief look around the class. “You must be quite the snoozer if your students look like this.”
The chatter died down as the class glanced between the two of them. There was an air of tension that began to settle over the room. Davey struggled to hide his smile. He could tell that Jack was enjoying this; the small, almost unnoticeable, smirk on his face said it all.
“Mr Kelly.” He said, finally pulling himself together. “What business might you have here? Don’t you have a class to teach?” His voice was cold and monotone and a scowl seemed to etch itself onto his face.
“Well if you must know Jacobs, I’m here to make a small delivery.” Jack said in an infuriatingly cocky tone. Davey glared at him as he swaggered his way across the room and placed a small stack of papers on his desk.
“What’s this?”
“Why don’t you read it to find out?” Jack said, returning his glare. The two had an intense stare down, making the students shuffle in their seats. Finally, after a few stifling moments, Jack tore away his gaze and walked out of the room.
As soon as Jack left, the class’ attention returns to Davey. He pretended to let out an annoyed sigh.
“Class dismissed.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~
The first thing Davey noticed when he entered the staffroom to take his lunch break, was that the said staffroom was unusually empty. In fact, the only other person there was Jack. As soon as he closed the door, Jack walked up to him and gave him a kiss on the cheek. Davey ignored him.
“Where is everybody?” Instead of answering his question, Jack let out a small whine and wrapped his arms around Davey’s neck, making the taller boy laugh. Oh if only the students can see how different Jack was when they were alone. He was a total softie.
“That’s not how you treat your boyfriend, Davey.”
“Oh yeah?” Davey raised an eyebrow,” How am I supposed to treat you then?”
“You give me a kiss, of course!” Jack said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. Davey rolled his eyes.
“Well you’re not getting a kiss until you answer my question, Jackie.” Jack let out another whine and proceeded to bury his face on the crook of Davey’s neck.
“That’s mean, Dave.”
“No kiss then?” Davey teased. Jack let out a small huff of annoyance.
“They went out for lunch. I waited here for you.” Jack said, clearly impatient. Davey let out another bark of laughter.
“Now that wasn’t so hard, was it?” Davey said before giving his whiny boyfriend a kiss on the lips.
