what if (and idk much like history wise so idk if this even works but it is A Thought)

(also worth mentioning that I thought of this cause I dreamed about it-)

in 1936 the Jacobs family travels to Poland to be with family. Jack is absolutely devastated that they leave, all but Les, who stays to go to school. He refuses to return any letters from the family and just wants to forget all about them.

But he picks up a newspaper one day and reads about the war, and what’s happening to Jewish people over there, and suddenly he’s sending a letter every day, praying that by some miracle David or *someone* will answer.

He’s in the middle of writing one of these letters when there’s a knock on his door and none other than Les Jacobs stand across from him, looking like a scared cat on the street, and he just falls into Jacks arms and cries because *did you read the news today*

Headline: David Jacobs, co-leader of Newsies strike killed, along with parents and sister

Jack has never felt more torn apart.

Les moves in with him, because what is he supposed to do, leave him to fend for himself?

And Jack finds his way back to old friends who are all mourning the loss of the boy with bright blue eyes and a smart mouth.

Additionally- I want to hear from y’all if I end up writing about this I want to know what I need to do to be respectful and sensitive of this topic and everything and I want to know everything you have to say! If I’m being a dick I’m relying on y’all to call me tf out on it cause I don���t wanna be a dick

Peter’s a caring father, while not well off. Ashely left when Jack was a week old.

Both of their parents are abusive addicts. Times they’ve lived with Wiesel he has also abused them.

Christine died when Albert was 8, Charlie tries his best.

Teen parents. Luis doesn’t have custody of Romeo (thanks to Kim) and Kim is abusive.

They had him at 19 and divorced at 21. Cassy is an abusive chain smoker and drinker, Steven loves him but can’t really fight Cassy in court for full custody due to a lack of money.

They seem like loving and supportive parents from what I see in canon.

JoJo - Curt and Annaleigh De La Guerra

Wedlock pregnancy. Curt left when JoJo was 1, he doesn’t really have a good relationship with his mom.

Paige is a loving mother, Sam is abusive toward both Paige and Sniper.

Smalls - Nathan and Jackie Jenkins

Had her out of wedlock but they’re both good parents.

Neither of them are involved parents, unhappily married and thought a baby would fix it. It didn’t.

Katherine - Joseph and Kate Pulitzer

We know about her father in canon already and I can’t imagine they have a good relationship, especially when Jack comes into the picture. Her mother is like the drunk aunt of the family, but Katherine is close with her mom. I also use her historical siblings and she is the closest with Ralph and Lucille, her older brother and older sister.

You sat with Jack and the other newsies in your usual spot, on the rooftop of a building near the lodge. You lean back against the edge, listening to the others converse, while Jack sat beside you, holding you close, his smile lighting up his face as he jokes with the others.

“Hey, Finch, back up from the edge.” Jack calls out to him, reaching over to tap Specs to tell him to grab onto Finch’s shirt.

Les, the youngest of the newsies, pipes up from across the circle. “You know,” he says with a mischievous glint in his eyes, “Jack and Y/N are kinda like mom and dad.”

There's a moment of silence as his words sink in, and then the group erupts into giggles and agreement. You feel a blush creeping up your cheeks as you exchange a glance with Jack. Jack's expression is a mix of embarrassment and amusement, and he rubs the back of his neck as all the boys start nudging him, calling him daddy.

“Come on, Les, don't be ridiculous,” he argues, but his protest is met with more rowdiness from the Newsies.

“It’s true!” Race chimes in, grinning. "Making sure we're fed and safe, more parents than mine ever were.”

“Yeah, consider us practice until you start making your own.” Elmer added, Jack punching him lightly in the arm in response.

Jack shot you a sheepish smile, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “They’re not wrong,” you say, your tone teasing. He playfully nudges you with his elbow, a smile tugging at the corners of your lips.

“I guess,” Jack surrenders, the group continues to tease and joke, their laughter echoing off the surrounding buildings. Despite Jack's initial embarrassment, you can see the fondness in his eyes as he looks around at the ragtag family you've all become. Les and Davey had their parents to go home to, yes, but Les considered you just as much of a parental figure. He crawled over to Jack, curling up in his lap, Jack still with one arm wrapped around your waist, listening as the others continued their chatter. Jack takes your hand in his, squeezing it three times, one of the many ways he wordlessly tells you he loves you.

Something something Jack sizing up a person and their personality as soon as he meets them something something using that to help Davey find who he is outside of what he thinks people want him to be -based on the HC that all of Davey’s social development went on the back burner as soon as Les was born

My brain was running wild with ideas about why Les and Davey were late to the circulation gate (“we had to help our mother with something!” And imagine if they were helping her take care of Mayor (perhaps helping him get around or tend to wounds) and that’s why Les mentions that they “have a father too!” And Davey tries to stop him 1) because obviously he knows most of the boys are orphans and 2) he doesn’t want to explain to the crowd their fathers unfortunate situation

Modern Newsie headcannons: NYC edition

i know the newsies live in nyc but a lot of the headcannons aren’t about them living in nyc so i came up with some

- Race sleeps a lot on the subway, mostly when he’s with albert cuz he knows albert will get them off at the right place. When they’re standing on the subway, and race is leaning his head on albert’s shoulder, al will keep his arm around Race’s waist so he doesn’t fall. If he’s asleep while they’re sitting down, albert will make sure his head doesn’t hit the wall.

- race and al use one pair of air pods on the subway to listen to the same music

- jack hates the subway (country boy at heart)

- finch will always ask someone if they would get up for crutchie to sit down if they’re are no empty seats

- race just knows the manhattan subway and streets by heart (native new yorker lookin ass)

- david carries hand sanitizer with him for after using the subway cuz you don’t know where everyone’s hands have been (the other newsies catch on cuz it’s smart)

- david is TERRIBLE at navigating the subway system. it’s overwhelming to him. he has cried while trying to figure out where they’re supposed to go when going somewhere new and jack takes over and never lets him navigate again. (unless he really wants to)

- race fanning albert while they wait for the subway (it’s hot as fuck down there)

- i know a very popular hc is that one of the newsies (usually jack) has a van, but realistically, these mfs don’t own cars 😭

- albert and jack will almost always take the stairs over the escalator

- race has fallen asleep alone on the subway and ended up somewhere completely different than where he was headed, which is why he now usually only sleeps if he’s with someone else

- most of the newsies live in lower manhattan (duh), but some of them live uptown north of central park. jack and crutchie live in the bowery with medda. the jacobs live in the lower east side (many jewish families settled there when they moved to nyc). races family lived in east harlem, but they moved to lower manhattan when race was a baby. spot and elmer are roommates (they live in brooklyn)

- race family is the classic italian roman catholic family

- david, sarah, and les are first generation immigrants from poland

- finch has picked up a pigeon off the streets on multiple occasions

- most of the newsies have never really left the city

- you know the newsies are constantly joining broadway lotteries

- race works at the broadway dance center (sky flaherty core)

- albert has no patience for slow walkers, he weaves in between people. he always looks like he’s on a mission.

so um, how did everyone become friends?

so im gonna start off saying that these are the ages I HC the boys are modern time, per my noggin.

Desmond: 22

Ezio & Arno: 23

Connor: 24

Altaïr & Jacob (& Evie): 25

Edward: 27

don't ask me why, but its just my brain rot.

Ezio's family adopted Desmond into their family after he left the farm; so their relationship is like brothers (obviously) (Desmond was 16, Ezio was 17)

Arno met Ezio & Desmond through one of his mom's fashion show; Maria & Claudia are huge fans of her work and managed to snag tickets to one of her shows (those runway things). Maria and Marie (Arnos mom) talked about their sons and Marie was like "hey let's all get together over some nice wine, my husband owns a winery" cue Ezio, Desmond & Arno meeting. ironically when they first met Arno & Ezio couldn't stand each other because of how much alike they acted, Desmond was the peace maker. over time though Arno, Ezio and Desmond became inseparable. (Ezio & Arno were 20, Desmond was 19)

Edward and Connor met through Haytham, in my noggin Edward & Connor are actually cousins but there is a 3 year difference between the two. they also have a sibling like relationship due to Edward also not liking Haytham. (Ziio is alive and her and Haytham married, they are happy, although it was rocky before they officially married and Connor was 5 years old when they married.) Connor doesn't get along with Haytham not only cause of the Templar thing, but also Charles Lee & the other Templars judge Haytham for being with Ziio and Connor being his son. they belittled Connor hence his hatred for them, Haytham behind the scenes though threatened them to stop or else..

Edward, Jacob (and Connor) met Jacob this way; they met during a mission they were sent on. they had to meet Jacob at a pub to listen to a Templar meeting and after they got their info they all sat and had drinks and a meal (Connor didn't drink any alcohol, only Ed & Jacob). they all got along great, although Connor did NOT appreciate having to carry both the drunkards back to the hotel, and he just dumped the two of them on the bed and went to sleep in his.

Altaïr met Ezio, Desmond and Arno at one of the Creeda HQ centers. he was just transferred to their branch, and he was a complete dick. Arno had no hesitation and lit into Altaïr for his behavior and had one of those "catch me outside how bout that" Altaïr ACTUALLY had respect for Arno for standing up to him let alone make a threat. they became good acquaintances, that developed into a great friendship (he does wish to throw hands sometimes if Arno becomes too sassy). Altaïr was Top Annoyed with Ezio when first meeting him. *looks to Arno and points at Ezio* "does...does this thing ever shut the hell up?" cue Ezio *LE GASP* "ME? A THING? bastardo! how dare--" and Desmond pipes in "let's all just calm down and talk, yes?" they all sit down, Desmond & Ezio introduced themselves. Altaïr likes Desmond too, Ezio is a 50/50, he wanted to punch him in the face but he didn't hate him. they're now great friends too. (Altaïr: 23, Ezio & Arno: 21, Desmond 20)

Arno, Ezio, Desmond & Connor met at Arnos Cafe (the one he was gifted from his parents on his 20th birthday) Ziio recommended the Cafe for its bakery sweets and rich flavorful coffee, they also have great hot chocolate. (Connor got the hot chocolate and some macaroons) Desmond was the one who made the recommendation on the flavors of the macaroons while Arno recommended the "campfire hot chocolate". Connor heard campfire and was convinced it'd be the best thing ever, it's his go to whenever he's there now. Ezio was introduced to Connor by Desmond & Arno. they adopted Connor into the boys then and there. (yes I see Ezio being the one to give the friend group that name)

Connor introduced Edward & Jacob to the boys.

Arno & Desmond introduced Altaïr to the boys (Ezio was still salty with Altaïr so he didn't do the introductions).

The Jacobs at home (but mostly David and Sarah):

Okay so we all know that Davey comes out of his shell during the strike

This boy goes from literally bowing to Medda when he meets her to yelling at one of the most powerful men in New York in his own office

But he didn’t change his personality at home

At home, Davey is David

Les gets into the habit of calling him Davey when they’re working but he knows not to at home

Davey would be too American for his parents

Not even Davey originally liked being called Davey

He does now though because Jack is the one who gave him the name

One time David was walking with his father and he heard Romeo call his name

He ignored it because he didn’t want his father to know that “Davey” was referring to him

He apologized to Romeo the next day and he understood

David is quiet and respectful at home, leaving Sarah and Les to do most of the talking

He may have accidentally started one of the most talked about strikes of the last decade and shut down New York for almost twelve hours but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t follow orders at home

David and Sarah know how hard their parents work and they do their best to take the burden off of them

When they get home from selling/school/the factory, they take over the patchwork their mother takes in, insisting she lies down before dinner

(I have a whole series of headcanons to do with Esther but they’ll come in another post)

The twins are often up very late finishing this work

The thing David says at home most often is probably some variation of “yes, Ima” or “no, Aba”

This boy is SHY at home

It’s not because he’s nervous around his parents

It’s because he doesn’t want to cause them any stress at all

And despite his job and how he acts around his friends, he’s an introvert and likes to not have to speak

Sometimes he and Sarah take their sewing up to the roof and he doesn’t have any qualms about talking her ear off then

She loves it though

Katherine is actually the first of their friends to visit them at home, not Jack

Les wanted to go to the lodging house after selling but David had chores to do and promised to pick him up later

Katherine was there too and Les got tired so she offered to walk him home

David isn’t happy about it but Les doesn’t know that his brother is a little self conscious about where he lives when it comes to Katherine

Esther invites her in and she’s shocked at the dynamics of the family

David barely speaks above a whisper and if she wasn’t seeing it with her own two eyes, she never would have believed it

In fact, Jack doesn’t believe it when she asks him about it, assuming he had already been there

When Jack finally visits, he stops on the way home to see Katherine and they have a wtf moment together

David and Sarah do their best to mind Les

They read him a bedtime story every night

David reads the narration and Sarah does the characters’ voices

They don’t have many books so they often read stories Les has heard a thousand times

He doesn’t care though because he just likes to listen to his siblings’ voices as he drifts off to sleep

David helps his mother cook and clean (although there isn’t much to clean in the two room apartment)

Sarah does too but she knows David likes cooking (it’s a quiet, calm activity with their mother telling him exactly what to do; it gives his brain a rest and just lets him do without thinking) so she gets ahead on the patchwork while he helps make dinner

After the injury, David is the one who helps Mayer get up and down the five flights of stairs

This usually happens about four times a day and it’s exhausting

But he never says a word about it because he knows his father would just feel guilty and he doesn’t want that

There’s only one bed in the Jacobs’ apartment

It’s not small by any means but it can’t fit all five of them

Their parents sleep on it with Sarah and Les

Sarah always tries to get David to take her spot but he refuses

He would literally rather lay on the floor next to Sarah than take her spot on the bed

Sarah gives up eventually because there’s no use in both of them being sore and achy all the time

Les sleeps on the bed too but once he gets bigger they’re going to have to figure something out because four full grown people can’t fit on it

David has a thin pad to sleep on and a pillow

Sometimes he’s so tired that all he wants to do is collapse on the bed with no one else on it but he would never say anything

Their parents already feel guilty about it and he won’t let himself add to it

Sarah and David do everything in their power to protect Les from knowing just how dire their situation is

Sure, he knows they had to drop out of school to sell papers but he doesn’t know that it’s a struggle to put food on the table

Some weeks are better than others

During the weeks that every headline is boring or rent is due, David and Sarah secretly take turns eating

They would both rather let the other one have all the food but they don’t argue over it much because they know that if one of them isn’t eating that meant that one of them isn’t going to be able to work

They eat in the morning with the family and then switch on and off who eats depending on the day

This doesn’t happen all the time but it happens more frequently than they’d like to admit

Their mother doesn’t leave the tenement much (again, I’ll explain in another post) so the twins do most of the shopping

Because of this, they can trick their parents into thinking they ate something they didn’t

“Sarah, you’re not eating dinner?” “Sorry, Aba, I was so hungry that I ate an apple and a lot of bread on the way home. I’m not hungry anymore. Maybe I’ll eat later.”

“David, you only put out four plates.” “Jack and I had a late lunch at Jacobi’s, Ima.”

Sarah sometimes gets into heated arguments with their parents if she thinks something is unfair

The twins don’t fight often but when they do they make sure no one else knows

They wait until everyone else is asleep and go up to the roof

The maddest Sarah ever gets at David is when he doesn’t stand up for himself to their parents

“You led a rally of hundreds of newsies and you can’t tell Ima that her expectations are unfair?” “None of those newsies gave birth to me, Sarah.”

But at the end of the day they’re a team and they know their job is to take care of their family

I have a lot more but this is already too long so I’ll do them another time

Crutchie refuses to talk about his life before the newsies, if you get any tidbits you can count yourself lucky. When asked about his family he gestures to the newsies and goes, 'who, these guys?'.

(It's not proper to speculate but Davey has a few guesses just because of how sad Crutchie seems sometimes when he looks at Les.)

they're constantly at each others throats. their boys all despise each other. and then one day, out of nowhere, harlem spots les selling on brooklyn turf with spot conlon. everyone knows what it means. it can't mean anything else. it means brooklyn and manhattan are allies, which means everyone else is fucked.

comment what you think davey/les/sarah would call their grandparents I'm leaning towards Baba and Dziadzia (pronounced like bah-bah and jah-jah basically) those are both variations of Polish grandma and grandpa but dziadiza also means uncle in russian and I hc the Jacobs kids as Russian-Polish and multilingual so that might be confusing. But do we think they'd be more likely to call them a by a russian name or hebrew/yiddish?

this is literally for one singular line in a fic I'm writing but accuracy is important to me. (i spent an hour yesterday researching tradtional russian, polish, and jewish meals and then said 'fuck it they eating soup' so that's how my mind works) especially if any of y'all call your grandparents by these names or are of russian/polish/jewish descent plz weigh in. thx :)

A Collection of Random HCs

Hi! I’m new to tumblr and I just wanted to put all my random Newsies HC’s i have in my phone on one post. :) 

They’re not Canon Era or Modern AU specifically.

One Halloween, Davey and Sarah went as Dipper and Mable and spent days trying to convince Les to be waddles. They tried to bribe him with candy, picking up chores, food, but Les being as stubborn as his sister ultimately won and went as Bill Cipher instead.

Specs regularly forgets his glasses when he goes to school/out selling and ends up with horrible headaches and migraines. He never learns his lesson.

Davey is the only one in his family who’s love language is physical touch (other than Les, but that’s different), so he ends up being extremely touch starved because he doesn’t want to bother them. But then he meets the newsies and within a couple of weeks, his brain produces so much serotonin it makes him dizzy due to the newsies being very tactical. 

(Javid) When he starts dating Jack it increases ten-fold, bc Jack is such a casually loving person. It isn’t hard for him to express love, so he always has an arm around Davey, or is bumping their knees together, or even (on late nights where it’s safe in CE) going as far as to pull Davey into his lap bc the pressure is comforting.

And Davey has to summon all the strength within himself not to cry whenever a simple gesture is made. He’s so in love.

Skittery got his name bc of his essential tremor. 

I have one so I’m just projecting

Les probably gets super into art because he looks up to Jack so much. Davey found out because he found doodles on a paper that was meant for school. He took it to show Jack and Jack found it so endearing that he started letting Les watch when he sketched something small.

Imagine, if you will: Racetrack with braces. Thank you for your time.

(Sprace) Spot started calling Race “Ray” out of no where and refuses to tell anyone why. He did accidentally tell Davey when he was drinking one night. (It’s bc Race is his “ray of sunshine”).

Davey used to sneak away from his classmates during recess to go hang out with the music teacher. She ended up teaching him how to read music and let him use the school’s rickety piano so he could practice. His mom had taught him the basics when he was younger, but they had to sell their piano. After the strike (or after school days in ME) Davey would follow Jack when he went to paint for Medda and would play for Jack.

Racetrack and Albert will call Finch by any bird name other than his own.

(Newsbians) Katherine pretends to like all the teas and herbal drinks Sarah constantly makes her, and while she does appreciate it and loves the health benefits, she just can never seem to finish a cup. She always waits for Sarah to look away so she can pour a little into the plants, down the drain, or even once off their balcony (she feels most guilty about that one). She will always be a coffee drinker. However, if she’s under the weather, tea is all she ever wants.

Newsies and Flipping People Off (I don’t know I’m losing it)

Jack: oh he flips people off a lot and it’s super forceful. When a camera gets faced in his direction he kinda huffs a smile and then 🖕

Race: oh you know he flips everything off. Especially random objects. Like once he stumped his toe on the corner of the table and kinda ‘ohhhhhHHHHH NO MMMMMM 🖕’ and Albert was just there laughing silently at Race’s aggression

You know who flips people off more than Race? Albert: he doesn’t mean to honestly it became a habit to just quickly flip someone off but then he found himself accidentally doing it and it became problematic. He accidentally flipped Les off and then Les started to copy him and, is too, unstoppable to everyones protest.

Davey: oh he’s never flipped someone off he’s too polite. Besides Jack... he got really really mad one day and flipped him off. The tension immediately lifted as Jack began laughing his ass off because Davey was so forceful and aggressive that it was just pitiful.

Katherine: oh she does it so tastefully normally followed by some smart remark. If newsies wasn’t a Disney show she would flip Jack off... someone give me newsies but they flip everyone off

Spot: well it’s Spot you do the thinking.
