I hate this new wave of impossibility with shelters
When my cat cookie had her last oops litter we tried to surrender them to the local shelter cause we figured theyd find homes easier that way BUT the shelter wanted $400 per kitten plus several "interviews" with the kittens over the course of like 3 months before they would even think of taking them, and if they decided against taking the kittens you were down $400x however many kittens (in my case it would of been $1200) and the kittens would be like 6 months old and at that point you might as well just keep them all and get them all desexed instead of taking them to the pound to surrender them at all
We ended up rehoming them via facebook and two of them went to the same home a week apart
They...wanted you to pay $400 to surrender animals to them??? That alone is insane but an extended interview period with the kittens as well? Are they applying to work there like what the fuck?

To add more to the Baker Adaine headcanon, she knows each of her friend's favourite baked treat and makes it for them whenever they have a bad day.
Fabian loves gingernut biscuits, they remind him of when he was small and went sailing with his Papa for the first time. He got horrendously seasick, and the only thing that would make him feel better is a gingernut biscuit. They're nostalgic, but he'd never actually ask anyone to make them for him. Adaine does anyway though after he gets absoloutly wasted, and melancholy, and tells her the whole story.
She makes gingerbread creatures in all sorts of diffent shapes for Riz after watching him carefully and gleefully bite the limbs off one he bought from the bakery once (saving the head for last). Contrary to this though, she made him one shaped like a little dragon once and it got decapitated immediatly. Riz grinning and showing off a full set of VERY sharp teeth, looking a little manic as he did so.
Gorgug loves everything she gives him, so she hasnt quite nailed down a favorite yet. He also reciprocates by bringing her treats his mum has made (and also sometimes copies down the recipies translated from gnomish from her cookbooks if its something he hasnt seen Adaine make yet).
Fig absoloutly adores those girly, icing-and-candy decorated biscuits. The frillier the better. She used to make them all the time herself before her horns started coming in but now they dont really fit her general vibe.
Scones are Kristens favorite, especially when piled high with whipped cream and jam. Adaine makes them extra special by grating apples into the batter and topping them with cinnamon sugar. Best eaten while still finger-burning hot out of the oven.

Recently got a new flatmate who is a CHEF! She makes awesome food and has been adapting recipes to make them coeliac friendly and everything. Anyway, she made these bomb as gingernuts and they look EXACTLY like the glutenous ones from the store and I've been chowing down on those biscuits.
Anyway I just found out that the gingernuts my flatmate made actually were finished a while ago and I've been eating gluten gingernuts that my partner got for work for the past three days because they have been stored in the SAME KIND OF TUPPERWARE AS THE OTHERS HAD BEEN STORED IN

Every night in Cambridge, the Time Eater clock strikes twelve.
Then it strikes thirteen.
And the monsters come out.
Reality and Dream: two worlds in a locked orbit, converging only at their furthest-flung edges. During the thirteenth hour, when time traps mortals like flies in tree sap, nightmares seep into our realm and devour human minds. They leave comatose victims in their wake, lost to the deadly Sleeping Sickness, as well as a constant, palpable undercurrent of fear.
But the nightmares should be frightened, too.
Beneath the grand Gothic vaults of Trinity and Kings lies another world of academia - one far more ancient, devoted to the arcane. Every year, a hundred humans are born a step outside of time, able to walk through the inverted lightscape of the Thirteenth Hour as if they too are spun not from substance, but surreality. The Sandman Academy gathers these youths, grants them their hourglasses - containing solidified granules of sunlight, the only effective weapon against dreams - and trains them to fight for all humanity.
And to die.
Horribly.
Torn apart by their worst nightmares.
So, when Zack Strange is chosen as one of humanity's guardians, you can see why his reaction is no way in hell. Allergic to risk-taking, conflict, things that go boo in the night (and, some would say, fun) Zack just wants to restart his nice, normal life at his nice, normal school, under his new name. And to find a binder that's comfy for PE class. Is that really too much to ask?
In contrast, when Zoe Ansari received a giant hourglass and was told she would train to slay nightmares, her only question was when do we start? Zoe quickly falls in love with the warped Escher-world of the Thirteenth Hour. She knows no fear. She knows no danger. She knows, if you ask Zack, far less than she thinks she does, and is likely to get herself and everyone in a ten-mile radius dead - which makes it a crying shame that he's her training partner.
Zack grudgingly joins the Sandmen in the hopes that they can save his grandma, who is in hospital after having her mind stolen by a dream. But shadowed secrets lurk in the heart of their new school. When Zack and Zoe discover a dangerous truth about the Sleeping Sickness, they will be forced to question their loyalty to the school and each other, and what it truly means to be brave.

Ingredients
225g gingernuts or digestives
115g unsalted butter, melted
1 orange, zested
candied orange slices, to serve (optional)
600g full-fat soft cheese
3 eggs, plus 2 egg yolks (freeze the extra white for another recipe)
175g double cream
175g light brown soft sugar
350g dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa solids), roughly chopped, plus extra to serve
3 oranges, zested
Method
For the filling, take the soft cheese, eggs and double cream out of the fridge to come to room temperature 1 hr before you begin. Heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and line the base of a 23cm springform cake tin with baking parchment: unclip the ring, lay the parchment over the base and clip the ring back. This will ensure there is no lip on the bottom of the finished cheesecake.
Tip the gingernuts into a food processor and blitz to a fine crumb. Add the melted butter and orange zest, then blitz briefly until the crumbs are coated. Tip the mixture into the prepared tin and press into an even layer using the back of a spoon. Bake for 10-15 mins until the base is slightly crisped up.
Beat the soft cheese and light brown sugar together until creamy using an electric whisk. Whisk in the whole eggs, the egg yolks and cream until smooth. Tip the dark chocolate into a heatproof bowl and melt in the microwave in 20-second bursts, or do this in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water, ensuring the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Leave to cool until warm to the touch. Slowly pour the melted chocolate over the soft cheese mixture, whisking continuously until combined. Stir in the orange zest, reserving the oranges.
Tightly wrap the bottom of the cake tin in foil to prevent leaking, then sit it in a deep roasting tin. Pour the cheesecake filling over the biscuit base. Put the roasting tin in the oven, then pour enough hot water into the roasting tin to come 2½cm up the side of the cake tin. Bake for 1 hr-1 hr 15 mins until the edge of the cheesecake is set, but the centre has a slight wobble (it will continue to set in the fridge).
Put the cake tin on a wire rack, then run a small, sharp knife around the edge to loosen. Remove the foil and leave to cool completely in the tin, then chill for at least 6 hrs in the fridge before removing to a plate. Segment the reserved oranges, avoiding the pith, and use these to decorate the top along with a grating of dark chocolate and candied orange slices, if you like. Will keep covered in the fridge for up to three days.

White chocolate cheesecake with fresh cherries

Crust:
-200g gingernut biscuits
-150g digestive biscuits
-2 tbsp caster sugar
-100g (about) unsalted butter, melted, cooled
Filling
450g good-quality white chocolate, finely chopped
1kg cream cheese, at room temperature
1/4 cup plus 1 tbsp caster sugar
4 large eggs, at room temperature
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 tsp ground ginger
1 cup sour cream
Cherry Topping:
1 cup port
2/3 cup caster sugar
1 cinnamon stick
1 whole star anise
2 whole cloves
Two 5cm strips orange peel
4 cups (550g) fresh cherries, halved, pitted

DIRECTIONS//:
Step 1: Position a rack in the centre of the oven and preheat to 160°C (140°C fan). Butter a 23cm-diameter springform pan. In a food processor, finely grind the gingernut biscuits, digestive biscuits, and sugar. Blend in enough butter until moist clumps form. Press onto the bottom and up three-fourths of the way up the sides of the pan. Chill while preparing the filling.
Step 2 To make the filling: Stir the white chocolate in the top of a double boiler placed over hot water until the chocolate melts. Cool to lukewarm, stirring occasionally.
Step 3 Using an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese and 1/4 cup of the sugar in large bowl, scraping the sides as needed, for about 3 minutes, or until fluffy. Add the eggs 1 at a time, beating just until combined after each addition. Beat in the vanilla and ground ginger. Gradually beat in the melted white chocolate. Stop the machine and scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl occasionally, and continue beating until very well blended.
Step 4 Transfer the filling to the prepared crust. Bake for about 50 minutes, or until the filling is loosely set and moves slightly when the pan is gently shaken.
Step 5 In a small bowl, stir the sour cream and remaining 1 tablespoon of sugar to blend. Spoon the sour cream mixture onto the hot baked cheesecake and smooth it over the top. Continue baking the cheesecake for about 10 minutes, or until the topping is just set. Transfer the cheesecake to a rack. Run a small knife around the sides of the cheesecake to loosen it from the pan. Cool completely. Chill overnight.
Step 6 To make the cherry topping: In a heavy large saucepan, bring the port, sugar, cinnamon stick, star anise, cloves, and orange peel to a boil over high heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the cherries and simmer for about 2 minutes, or until the cherries soften slightly and release some of their liquid. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool. Transfer to a medium bowl, cover, and refrigerate until cold. Alternatively, the topping can be served warm.
Step 7 Just before serving, remove the pan sides to release the cheesecake. Cut the cheesecake into wedges. Spoon the cherry mixture over and around each wedge and serve
