I am kind of loosing hope in the decolonization movement in Russia for my people and my republic. I have already written about it, but I need venting as I don't really have anything to talk to about it. From what I have seen the majority of a big percent of our decolonial activists are very or sometimes extremely traditionalist, religious and conservative. Should I explain why it goes on the opposite direction with the leftist values? Probably not. You might have heard that radical conservatism, forcing religion etc is already a problem in Russia. And I honestly don't see any reason in being forced into Christianity or being forced into Islam, as my people and the people of my native republic(neighboring) are traditionally majority Muslims. A lot of these put religion as some major or even the main and only factor in decolonizing their land. Meaning, decolonization = returning to traditions. As someone who does value their own indigenous culture, I understand the importance of traditions, as well as I understand the significance of Islam in our history and in colonization. Forced christanization and a lot of limitations and oppression was used as an instrument of colonialism and assimilation. I am interested in learning about Islam and learning about the traditions. But I am genuinely tired of constant judgement and negativity towards secular tatars and bashkirs or those who prefer to leave their religion. Not even mentioning feminism and lgbt community(yeah, I am not cisstraight, neither is my partner, who is also not tatar, so I am combo of a dirty mankurt). Sometimes I feel like maybe I am being bigoted and don't understand them. Or that I have to be more tolerant in uniting with them against Russia. But how? With people that are literally negative towards me and that have totally completely different aims other than overthrowing Russia? I don't know. The only good thing about them is that they support Palestine. But they do it in some weird antisemitic way, claiming Jewish people as an ethnicity for that or denying Holocaust. Liberal opposition meanwhile support Israel for some reason. Idiotic situation, right?
This is it, basically. I want to be together with my prople and support decolonization, but at the same time I meet too any that have completely different values and don't see me as an equal human. And it does hurt very much.

i've been talking with my husband on the topic of the hypervigilance of oppressed minorities and traumatized people in general.
when a group of people are under constant threat, the individuals in those groups have to face every situation with the understanding that it can be an attack on them, it can be a threat to their safety or their life, it can destroy their relationships and even interfere with their jobs or housing or children. i know this, firsthand, as i imagine many people on this site do... and i'm demonstrably not above overcompensating for that looming threat myself, but i often struggle to see it in others. and thinking of myself as a threat, or a potential one, has to be a mindful exercise because it does not come naturally and honestly i haven't ever really had a strong need to consider.
i dunno if we're all really being played against each other. it feels like it, a lot of the time. but we all have to see each other as potentially life ruining, because honestly any stranger could be with the wrong series of choices or too public an online persona or letting too many details of your life out where people can find them.
and being in this headspace of at least a little bit but usually quite a lot more than a little bit on edge all the time is exhausting, it's awful, it makes us respond to things from that position of "this conversation is dangerous to me". which sucks somewhere like tumblr where regardless of what the people in charge are doing, the majority of the users are here for love, support, to share fandoms or art or whatever to create a beautiful space. and, often, to band together in solidarity. this is the only site i see hundreds of posts sending love and support to palestinians without the weird mysterious ~glitches~ that leave people unable to comment on pro-palestine posts. it's the only site i see mutual aid and emergency crowdfunding numbers actually go up as they get reblogged and passed around to people who may not even have enough for their own bills but are farther from homelessness than the person asking and so they donate what they can anyway. it's a beautiful community full of people stuck on survival mode, trying their best.
so i engaged with a post tonight earnestly, seeing it only from my perspective. which... is something we all need to work on as a general rule, but also i pride myself on my ability to see things from different angles and even being good at that i still very much did not understand the other side. explaining why i was getting pushback for what i said to someone who has less context and understanding helped me to realize, well, why i was getting pushback. and unlike experiences i've had before, in places more cynical and less communal, the people upset with me were also being earnest and i handled that poorly.
i don't ever want a trans woman (or anyone) on this website to feel like i am a danger to them, their safety... or even their joy on this site. because honestly, wrecking someone's day by being hostile to them is more than just getting some justice or being heard like it feels like in the moment. it's also adding to the pile of tiny and huge awful things they're dealing with already. it's telling that survival mode that yeah, actually, this time you were right and you should get up at arms at this person because they are damaging. because it is damage. every random pulse of cortisol from every self-righteous message is adding to the unnecessary shitty stress levels. every increasingly tense back and forth argument is a genuinely dangerous conflict on a biological level. our brains don't know the difference. and yeah, nobody's going to have a heart attack because somebody was a jerk to them online (i hope). but we have seen what too many jerks over too long does to. and when there's waves of negativity, it doesn't matter how big or small a part each person plays, because they're still adding up together to that wave. and trans women, every single trans woman right now, is facing one hell of a fucking wave.
so... i'm sorry my misread of a situation meant that i added to that. i'm sure it will happen again, but also, i think this will serve as a reminder to me next time to shut up, at least until i've actually put in the effort to understand what's even really being discussed, under the surface or on it, in the first place.

Whoah, people are pushing ultra-restrictive policy that has precisely zero empirical evidence of helping anyone, at all, ever, under the guise of 'protecting the children,' which inevitably gets co-opted by people who just generally have a hard-on for surveillance, authoritarianism, and puritanism? Where have I heard that one before? Look, I'm not trying to twist the meaning of this, it's way bigger than the 'problematic fiction' argument. But currently that's my niche, so I'm gonna speak to it from that lens. If you think this is a massive simplification that is enormously unimportant compared to the big picture: yes. Correct. If it ain't relevant to you then just move on. Censorship sucks. It's not the right way to deal with basically anything; the only kind of media that should be outright banned is media that *directly* involves harm to real people, and even *that* is a minefield of overlapping legislative needs that can be exploited by these kind of people. Basically: total bans need to be treated as an absolute last resort reserved only for material that *directly* harms people, and they require a mind-boggling degree of refinement to make them as close to unexploitable as possible. And, beyond that, the response is *community* effort. Hateful media shouldn't be banned, the endgame is a society that is well informed enough to know what sucks and so there's no demand for it. Ever-irrelevant bigots fading further and further into the background as more and more people learn real and genuine compassion and empathy. You shouldn't need to ban swastikas; what you need to do is create a community that knows why they shouldn't be using them. I know y'all think you're on the right side of history. And I get it: humanity has a long-ingrained habit of exploitation and abuse. Things like rape, child abuse, dehumanization, and war stain human history for as long as it's been documented. Billions before us have tried to hack away at our instincts around this stuff and, tragically, billions more probably will before we fix it, if we ever even do. It would require enormous changes to the way we think and act. I understand becoming so incensed about the issue that you start getting desperate for black-and-white answers, a nice simple 'if we remove anything that depicts it, that'll stop people from wanting to do it'. I've straight up been there. But at the end of the day? This is what your efforts will amount to. It doesn't matter how good your intentions are, and it doesn't matter if you think 'we're not like those OTHER people who are driven by [motivation], we just want to actually get rid of [bad thing]!' Because among every group, whether it's conservative-religious or whatever you want to call this more modern queer-tinged twist on it, the end result will be the same. Oppressive, invasive surveillance legislation. And even if you don't support this; you feed it. Politicians do this because they know they have barely enough support to ram it through. And most of that support is corporations. The support of weird queer puritans played a huge part when tumblr first did this; a lot of people mistakenly cheered for it, then were outraged when things they deemed as okay got banned too. The decision of what is "indecent" should never be left up to corporations, or organizations, or legislation. The only person who can decide what is too much for your eyes is you, and the only method of banning things should be through your own damn blacklist. "Bad people who like bad thing like this thing" will never be a good metric, because if you ban everything else they'll just be getting off to goddamn clothes magazines. Seriously, I wish every anti would take a good, long look at legislation like this, and see their reflection in it, see the way that their exact sentiments are echoed. Y'all empower this junk whether you want to or not. I'm begging you to grow up and look at where your own damn feet are leading you.

What is the EARN IT Act?
The EARN IT Act (s. 1207) has been roundly condemned by nearly every major LGBTQ+ advocacy and human rights organization in the country.
This is the third time the Senate has been trying to force this through, and I talked about it last year. It is a bill that claims "protects children and victims against CSAM" by creating an unelected and politically appointed national commission of law enforcement specialists to dictate "best practices" that websites all across the nation will be forced to follow. (Keep in mind, most websites in the world are created in the US, so this has global ramifications). These "best practices" would include killing encryption so that any law enforcement can scan and see every single message, dm, photo, cloud storage, data, and any website you have every so much as glanced at. Contrary to popular belief, no they actually can't already do that. These "best practices" also create new laws for "removing CSAM" online, leading to mass censorship of non-CSAM content like what happened to tumblr. Keep in mind that groups like NCOSE, an anti-LGBT hate group, will be allowed on this commission. If websites don't follow these best practices, they lose their Section 230 protections, leading to mass censorship either way.
Section 230 is foundational to modern online communications. It's the entire reason social media exists. It grants legal protection to users and websites, and says that websites aren't responsible for what users upload online unless it's criminal. Without Section 230, websites are at the mercy of whatever bullshit regulatory laws any and every US state passes. Imagine if Texas and Florida were allowed to say what you can and can't publish and access online. That is what will happen if EARN IT passes. (For context, Trump wanted to get rid of Section 230 because he knew it would lead to mass govt surveillance and censorship of minorities online.)
This is really not a drill. Anyone who makes or consume anything âadultâ and LGBT online has to be prepared to fight Sen. Blumenthalâs EARN IT Act, brought back from the grave by a bipartisan consensus to destroy Section 230. If this bill passes, weâre going to see most, if not all, adult content and accounts removed from mainstream platforms. This will include anything related to LGBT content, including SFW fanfiction, for example. Youtube, Twitter, Reddit, Tiktok, Tumblr, all of them will be completely gutted of anything related to LGBT content, abortion healthcare, resources for victims of any type of abuse, etc. It is a right-wing fascists wet dream, which is why NCOSE is behind this bill and why another name for this bill is named in reference to NCOSE.
NCOSE used to be named Morality in Media, and has rebranded into an "anti-trafficking" organization. They are a hate group that has made millions off of being "against trafficking" while helping almost no victims and pushing for homophobic laws globally. They have successfully pushing the idea that any form of sexual expression, including talking about HEALTH, leads to sex trafficking. That's how SESTA passed. Their goal is to eliminate all sex, anything gay, and everything that goes against their idea of âGodâ from the internet and hyper disney-fy and sanitize it. This is a highly coordinated attack on multiple fronts.
The EARN IT Act will lead to mass online censorship and surveillance. Platforms will be forced to scan their usersâ communications and censor all sex-related content, including sex education, literally anything lgbt, transgender or non-binary education and support systems, aything related to abortion, and sex worker communication according to the ACLU. All this in the name of âprotecting kidsâ and âfighting CSAMâ, both of which the bill does nothing of the sort. In fact it makes fighting CSEM even harder.
EARN IT will open the way for politicians to define the category of âpornography" as they â or the lobbies that fund them â please. The same way that right-wing groups have successfully banned books about race and LGBT, are banning trans people from existing, all under the guise of protecting children from "grooming and exploitation", is how they will successfully censor the internet.
As long as state legislatures can tie in "fighting CSAM" to their bullshit laws, they can use EARN IT to censor and surveill whatever they want.
This is already a nightmare enough. But the bill also DESTROYS ENCRYPTION, you know, the thing protecting literally anyone or any govt entity from going into your private messages and emails and anything on your devices and spying on you.
This bill is going to finish what FOSTA/SESTA started. And that should terrify you.
Senator Blumenthal (Same guy who said âFacebook should ban finstaâ) pushed this bill all of 2020, literally every activist (There were more than half a million signatures on this site opposing this act!) pushed hard to stop this bill. Now he brings it back, doesnât show the text of the bill until hours later, and itâs WORSE. Instead of fixing literally anything in the bill that might actually protect kids online, Bluemnthal is hoping to fast track this and shove it through, hoping to get little media attention other than propaganda of âprotecting kidsâ to support this shitty legislation that will harm kids. Blumental doesn't care about protecting anyone, and only wants his name in headlines.
It will make CSAM much much worse.
One of the many reasons this bill is so dangerous: It totally misunderstands how Section 230 works, and in doing so (as with FOSTA) it is likely to make the very real problem of CSAM worse, not better. Section 230 gives companies the flexibility to try different approaches to dealing with various content moderation challenges. It allows for greater and greater experimentation and adjustments as they learn what works â without fear of liability for any âfailure.â Removing Section 230 protections does the opposite. It says if you do anything, you may face crippling legal liability. This actually makes companies less willing to do anything that involves trying to seek out, take down, and report CSAM because of the greatly increased liability that comes with admitting that there is CSAM on your platform to search for and deal with. This liability would allow anyone for any reason to sue any platform they want, suing smaller ones out of existence. Look at what is happening right now with book bans across the nation with far right groups. This is going to happen to the internet if this bill passes.
(Remember, the state department released a report in December 2021 recommending that the government crack down on âobscenityâ as hard the Reagan Administration did. If this bill passes, it could easily go way beyond shit red states are currently trying. It is a goldmine for the fascist right that is currently in the middle of banning every book that talks about race and sexuality across the US.)
The reason these bills keep showing up is because there is this false lie spread by organizations like NCOSE that platforms do nothing about CSEM online. However, platforms are already liable for child sexual exploitation under federal law. Tech companies sent more than 45 million+ instances of CSAM to the DOJ in 2019 alone, most of which they declined to investigate. This shows that platforms are actually doing everything in their power already to stop CSEM by following already existing laws. The Earn It Act includes zero resources for proven investigation or prevention programs. If Senator Bluementhal actually cared about protecting youth, why wouldnât he include anything to actually protect them in his shitty horrible bill? EARN IT is actually likely to make prosecuting child molesters more difficult since evidence collected this way likely violates the Fourth Amendment and would be inadmissible in court.
I donât know why so many Senators are eager to cosponsor the âmake child pornography worseâ bill, but here we are.
HOW TO FIGHT BACK
EARN IT Act was introduced just two weeks ago and is already being fast-tracked. It will be marked up the week of May 1st and head to the Senate floor immediately after. If there is no loud and consistent opposition, it will be law by JUNE! Most bills never go to markup, so this means they are putting pressure to move this through. There are already 20 co-sponsors, a fifth of the entire Senate. This is an uphill battle and it is very much all hands on deck.

Interview With An Ex-Radfem
exradfem is an anonymous Tumblr user who identifies as transmasculine, and previously spent time in radical feminist communities. They have offered their insight into those communities using their own experiences and memories as a firsthand resource.
Background
I was raised in an incredibly fundamentalist religion, and so was predisposed to falling for cult rhetoric. Naturally, I was kicked out for being a lesbian. I was taken in by the queer community, particularly the trans community, and I got back on my feet- somehow. I had a large group of queer friends, and loved it. I fully went in on being the Best Trans Ally Possible, and constantly tried to be a part of activism and discourse.
Unfortunately, I was undersocialized, undereducated, and overenthusiastic. I didn't fully understand queer or gender theory. In my world, when my parents told me my sexuality was a choice and I wasn't born that way, they were absolutely being homophobic. I understood that no one should care if it's a choice or not, but it was still incredibly, vitally important to me that I was born that way.
On top of that, I already had an intense distrust of men bred by a lot of trauma. That distrust bred a lot of gender essentialism that I couldn't pull out of the gender binary. I felt like it was fundamentally true that men were the problem, and that women were inherently more trustworthy. And I really didn't know where nonbinary people fit in.
Then I got sucked down the ace exclusionist pipeline; the way the arguments were framed made sense to my really surface-level, liberal view of politics. This had me primed to exclude people ââ to feel like only those that had been oppressed exactly like me were my community.
Then I realized I was attracted to my nonbinary friend. I immediately felt super guilty that I was seeing them as a woman. I started doing some googling (helped along by ace exclusionists on Tumblr) and found the lesfem community, which is basically radfem âliteâ: lesbians who are "only same sex attracted". This made sense to me, and it made me feel so much less guilty for being attracted to my friend; it was packaged as "this is just our inherent, biological desire that is completely uncontrollable". It didn't challenge my status quo, it made me feel less guilty about being a lesbian, and it allowed me to have a "biological" reason for rejecting men.
I don't know how much dysphoria was playing into this, and it's something I will probably never know; all of this is just piecing together jumbled memories and trying to connect dots. I know at the time I couldn't connect to this trans narrative of "feeling like a woman". I couldn't understand what trans women were feeling. This briefly made me question whether I was nonbinary, but radfem ideas had already started seeping into my head and I'm sure I was using them to repress that dysphoria. That's all I can remember.
The lesfem community seeded gender critical ideas and larger radfem princples, including gender socialization, gender as completely meaningless, oppression as based on sex, and lesbian separatism. It made so much innate sense to me, and I didn't realize that was because I was conditioned by the far right from the moment of my birth. Of course women were just a biological class obligated to raise children: that is how I always saw myself, and I always wanted to escape it.
I tried to stay in the realms of TIRF (Trans-Inclusive Radical Feminist) and "gender critical" spaces, because I couldn't take the vitriol on so many TERF blogs. It took so long for me to get to the point where I began seeing open and unveiled transphobia, and I had already read so much and bought into so much of it that I thought that I could just ignore those parts.
In that sense, it was absolutely a pipeline for me. I thought I could find a "middle ground", where I could "center women" without being transphobic.
Slowly, I realized that the transphobia was just more and more disgustingly pervasive. Some of the trans men and butch women I looked up to left the groups, and it was mostly just a bunch of nasty people left. So I left.
After two years offline, I started to recognize I was never going to be a healthy person without dealing with my dysphoria, and I made my way back onto Tumblr over the pandemic. I have realized I'm trans, and so much of this makes so much more sense now. I now see how I was basically using gender essentialism to repress my identity and keep myself in the closet, how it was genuinely weaponized by TERFs to keep me there, and how the ace exclusionist movement primed me into accepting lesbian separatism- and, finally, radical feminism.
The Interview
You mentioned the lesfem community, gender criticals, and TIRFs, which I haven't heard about before- would you mind elaborating on what those are, and what kinds of beliefs they hold?
I think the lesfem community is recruitment for lesbians into the TERF community. Everything is very sanitized and "reasonable", and there's an effort not to say anything bad about trans women. The main focus was that lesbian = homosexual female, and you can't be attracted to gender, because you can't know someone's gender before knowing them; only their sex.
It seemed logical at the time, thinking about sex as something impermeable and gender as internal identity. The most talk about trans women I saw initially was just in reference to the cotton ceiling, how sexual orientation is a permanent and unchangeable reality. Otherwise, the focus was homophobia. This appealed to me, as I was really clinging to the "born this way" narrative.
This ended up being a gateway to two split camps - TIRFs and gender crits.
I definitely liked to read TIRF stuff, mostly because I didn't like the idea of radical feminism having to be transphobic. But TIRFs think that misogyny is all down to hatred of femininity, and they use that as a basis to be able to say trans women are "just as" oppressed.
Gender criticals really fought out against this, and pushed the idea that gender is fake, and misogyny is just sex-based oppression based on reproductive issues. They believe that the source of misogyny is the "male need to control the source of reproduction"- which is what finally made me think I had found the "source" of my confusion. That's why I ended up in gender critical circles instead of TIRF circles.
I'm glad, honestly, because the mask-off transphobia is what made me finally see the light. I wouldn't have seen that in TIRF communities.
I believed this in-between idea, that misogyny was "sex-based oppression" and that transphobia was also real and horrible, but only based on transition, and therefore a completely different thing. I felt that this was the "nuanced" position to take.
The lesfem community also used the fact that a lot of lesbians have partners who transition, still stay with their lesbian partners, and see themselves as lesbian- and that a lot of trans men still see themselves as lesbians. That idea is very taboo and talked down in liberal queer spaces, and I had some vague feelings about it that made me angry, too. I really appreciated the frank talk of what I felt were my own taboo experiences.
I think gender critical ideology also really exploited my own dysphoria. There was a lot of talk about how "almost all butches have dysphoria and just don't talk about it", and that made me feel so much less alone and was, genuinely, a big relief to me that I "didn't have to be trans".
Lesfeminism is essentially lesbian separatism dressed up as sex education. Lesfems believe that genitals exist in two separate categories, and that not being attracted to penises is what defines lesbians. This is used to tell cis lesbians, "dont feel bad as a lesbian if you're attracted to trans men", and that they shouldnât feel "guilty" for not being attracted to trans women. They believe that lesbianism is not defined as being attracted to women, it is defined as not being attracted to men; which is a root idea in lesbian separatism as well.
Lesfems also believe that attraction to anything other than explicit genitals is a fetish: if you're attracted to flat chests, facial hair, low voices, etc., but don't care if that person has a penis or not, you're bisexual with a fetish for masculine attributes. Essentially, they believe the â-sexualâ suffix refers to the âsexâ that you are assigned at birth, rather than your attraction: âhomosexualâ refers to two people of the same sex, etc. This was part of their pushback to the ace community, too.
I think they exploited the issues of trans men and actively ignored trans women intentionally, as a way of avoiding the âTERFâ label. Pronouns were respected, and they espoused a constant stream of "trans women are women, trans men are men (but biology still exists and dictates sexual orientation)" to maintain face.
They would only be openly transmisogynistic in more private, radfem-only spaces.
For a while, I didnât think that TERFs were real. I had read and agreed with the ideology of these "reasonable" people who others labeled as TERFs, so I felt like maybe it really was a strawman that didn't exist. I think that really helped suck me in.
It sounds from what you said like radical feminism works as a kind of funnel system, with "lesfem" being one gateway leading in, and "TIRF" and "gender crit" being branches that lesfem specifically funnels into- with TERFs at the end of the funnel. Does that sound accurate?
I think that's a great description actually!
When I was growing up, I had to go to meetings to learn how to "best spread the word of god". It was brainwashing 101: start off by building a relationship, find a common ground. Do not tell them what you really believe. Use confusing language and cute innuendos to "draw them in". Prey on their emotions by having long exhausting sermons, using music and peer pressure to manipulate them into making a commitment to the church, then BAM- hit them with the weird shit.
Obviously I am paraphrasing, but this was framed as a necessary evil to not "freak out" the outsiders.
I started to see that same talk in gender critical circles: I remember seeing something to the effect of, "lesfem and gender crit spaces exist to cleanse you of the gender ideology so you can later understand the 'real' danger of it", which really freaked me out; I realized I was in a cult again.
I definitely think it's intentional. I think they got these ideas from evangelical Christianity, and they actively use it to spread it online and target young lesbians and transmascs. And I think gender critical butch spaces are there to draw in young transmascs who hate everything about femininity and womanhood, and lesfem spaces are there to spread the idea that trans women exist as a threat to lesbianism.
Do you know if they view TIRFs a similar way- as essentially prepping people for TERF indoctrination?
Yes and no.
I've seen lots of in-fighting about TIRFs; most TERFs see them as a detriment, worse than the "TRAs" themselves. I've also definitely seen it posed as "baby's first radfeminism". A lot of TIRFs are trans women, at least from what I've seen on Tumblr, and therefore are not accepted or liked by radfems. To be completely honest, I don't think they're liked by anyone. They just hate men.
TIRFs are almost another breed altogether; I don't know if they have ties to lesfems at all, but I do think they might've spearheaded the online ace exclusionist discourse. I think a lot of them also swallowed radfem ideology without knowing what it was, and parrot it without thinking too hard about how it contradicts with other ideas they have.
The difference is TIRFs exist. They're real people with a bizarre, contradictory ideology. The lesfem community, on the other hand, is a completely manufactured "community" of crypto-terfs designed specifically to indoctrinate people into TERF ideology.
Part of my interest in TIRFs here is that they seem to have a heavy hand in the way transmascs are treated by the trans community, and if you're right that they were a big part of ace exclusionism too they've had a huge impact on queer discourse as a whole for some time. It seems likely that Baeddels came out of that movement too.
Yes, thereâs a lot of overlap. The more digging I did, the more I found that it's a smaller circle running the show than it seems. TIRFs really do a lot of legwork in peddling the ideology to outer queer community, who tend to see it as generic feminism.
TERFs joke a lot about how non-radfems will repost or reblog from TERFs, adding "op is a TERFâ. They're very gleeful when people accept their ideology with the mask on. They think it means these people are close to fully learning the "truth", and they see it as further evidence they have the truth the world is hiding. I think it's important to speak out against radical feminism in general, because theyâre right; their ideology does seep out into the queer community.
Do you think there's any "good" radical feminism?
No. It sees women as the ultimate victim, rather than seeing gender as a tool to oppress different people differently. Radical feminism will always see men as the problem, and it is always going to do harm to men of color, gay men, trans men, disabled men, etc.
Women aren't a coherent class, and radfems are very panicked about that fact; they think it's going to be the end of us all. But what's wrong with that? That's like freaking out that white isn't a coherent group. It reveals more about you.
It's kind of the root of all exclusionism, the more I think about it, isn't it? Just freaking out that some group isn't going to be exclusive anymore.
Radical feminists believe that women are inherently better than men.
For TIRFs, it's gender essentialism. For TERFs, its bio essentialism. Both systems are fundamentally broken, and will always hurt the groups most at risk. Centering women and misogyny above all else erases the root causes of bigotry and oppression, and it erases the intersections of race and class. The idea that women are always fundamentally less threatening is very white and privileged.
It also ignores how cis women benefit from gender norms just as cis men do, and how cis men suffer from gender roles as well. Itâs a system of control where gender non-conformity is a punishable offense.

people have such an obsession with creating the âgoodâ teams and âbadâ teams in this community, not realizing that it can just cause further oppression, suffering, and less social acceptance for people.
i used to run a blog for alloaro discussion, since i formerly identified that way. i remember when people said alloarophobia couldnât exist, because you canât be oppressed for being allo. sure, alloaros are oppressed, but only for being aro. itâs not a special microlabel because being allo is a privilege.
maybe thatâs why i donât buy into the current debate on terms like âtransandrophobia.â because itâs recycled. itâs not new, itâs not a âhot take,â itâs bigotry taken to its furthest point under a new form of discourse, because it always evolves. does âandrophobiaâ exist? on itâs own, no. but like alloarophobia, it does exist under certain circumstances, due to being in another group.
allos arenât oppressed as a group, but gay allos are for expressing their sexuality in a way society doesnât approve of, for being openly sexual with people of the same gender, for being allo in a way that amatonormantivity didnât account for. alloaros are, for being okay with sexuality without romance, for being okay with FWBs, for not wanting the nuclear family, all while still being comfortable in their non-normative sexuality, and so on, so forth.
men arenât oppressed as a group, but trans men are for not being seen as real men, for being forced into specific roles, for not having reproductive rights, for invisibility. men of color are, for how theyâre painted as aggressive and violent, for how theyâre often targets of unjustified attacks and even deaths for this very stereotype. mlm are, intersex men are, gender nonconforming men are.
when are people going to realize that this isnât anything new, and theyâre just being transphobic? i keep seeing it in terms of both gender and attraction. people think these jokes about how being a guy or liking guys is gross, when people literally die for being attracted to men, or for fighting to be considered one in a society that wants them to fade into obscurity. you arenât being revolutionary, you arenât lifting up whoever the fuck you think you are, youâre just causing more suffering for a group that frankly, has suffered fucking enough.
if you pick apart labels that describe oppression based off of whether the components exist on their own, youâre not an ally for any of us.
tell me what two magical components make up biphobia that âjustifyâ the word existing. or aphobia, or even homophobia. is it okay for the term âalloarophobiaâ to exist even though âallophobiaâ doesnât? if youâre in this community, thereâs a 99% chance youâd say yes. because âallophobiaâ becomes possible under certain circumstances, such as being aro. kinda weird right? clearly, the axis doesnât exist, because the two components on its own typically donât. (sarcasm)
but thatâs not really what the problem is, is it. this semantics over language, over whether the term is accurate based off of the etymology⌠thatâs not the issue. the issue is, some people just donât want to admit how deeply transphobic they are, and how willing theyâd be to let huge chunks of us suffer and die because we donât fit their perfect categorization of what âcountsâ or âdeservesâ to exist.
to some people, this shit is just a game and not lived experience. itâs internet discourse. because to them, it matters more than the lives and genuine safety of real queer people. itâs nice to know how many people in the queer community would turn on a dime and not stand for their fellow community members based off of it.
iâm honestly willing to bet a huge portion of these people would be the same ones who helped me get recloseted as an ace person because âaphobia canât exist,â the same ones who called us âbihetsâ and based us off of our âprivilegeâ instead of recognizing biphobia as a term. the day people realize that this is recycled bigotry and not some revolutionary OwnTM that you think it is will be the day we can finally move forward as a community instead of bickering and squabbling in the gutter.
these people are not just against transmasc allyship, but queer allyship as a whole, until they get over this shit. end of discussion.

this is gonna sound so harsh but im legit tired of chinese diaspora people who think that bc they are of chinese descent and they have pleco they can act like voices of authority in the fandom. if modao is the 1st chinese book you have read pieces of with a dictionary, if you have never interacted with the actual chinese fandom, you are not part of the intended audience and your biased opinion is not the One And Only Valid Truth đľ

this got long and rambly (of course) asldkjfslj. i would love to make the excuse that itâs bc iâve got a migraine and had No Sleep but. letâs be real iâm always like this.
ok iâll start with where i agree: i donât think anyone has the right to act like an ultimate voice of authority in fandom. i think different people with different backgrounds have varying realms of expertise and they should be respected when they share that knowledge, but that the instant someone starts to use that kind of power as a weapon against people they personally donât like, i think they forfeit that privilege. no one has the one and only valid truth about a piece of media because thatâs fundamentally impossible. i have definitely interacted with diaspo who behave like their heritage gives them some kind of incontrovertible authority over everyone else, and theyâre fucking insufferable and often rather cruel, even/especially towards other diaspo. meet me in the dennyâs parking lot and fight me for real. iâll kick ur ass. >:c
however, I also think itâs true that thereâs a lot of dismissal of heritage fans in this fandom, if that makes sense, from both sides of the equation: non-Chinese fans ignore our cultural hangups because theyâre inconvenient, and non-diaspora disdain us for being not Chinese enough. that puts a lot of us in a position of feeling disrespected just for being who we are, or having our very real knowledge and unique experience as individuals devalued because of it.
regardless of my identity, I have formally studied a lot of things: literary translation, media analysis, the politics of oppression, film critique, religious studies, philosophy, four foreign languages etc. and that is all knowledge that I had to work for, and work hard for. I do have a certain measure of authority on all of these subjects over a layperson (to varying degrees), and there are going to be times when i will be more correct than someone who disagrees with me -- but Iâve also absolutely experienced people talking over that specialized knowledge because of who I am, which is, to be clear. extremely infuriating and hurtful. like, i have cried so much about it in the last 18 months. people see my racial and cultural identity before they see anything else, which is understandable to a degree, but upsetting when it becomes the basis for how my work is judged, whether positive or negative. i donât want you to trust me blindly because iâm abc. I want to you to trust me because you have examined my work critically and judged it to be trustworthy!
so i guess this is getting into the strongly disagree part of the answer: iâve been speaking a lot with other diaspora fans lately, and itâs been simultaneously hugely relieving and also really saddening. relieving because oh thank god someone else Gets It, and saddening because pretty much all of us, no matter what kind of diaspo we are (north american, european, SEA, taiwanese etc), weâve all experienced a lot of pressure in this fandom, from non-Chinese, Chinese, and other diaspora fans alike. weâre all acutely aware that we are not modaoâs intended audience because being diaspora vs being âfrom the mainlandâ or whatever, are actually quite different things, but modao still feels close to home. even if it was not written FOR us it is still familiar to us.
and, because so many of us are multilingual and multicultural, we end up being the bridge between the âactualâ chinese fandom and the english-speaking fandom, which is largely made up of non-chinese. (sidenote: I hate it when people say things about being âactuallyâ any identity because itâs almost always for the exact reason you brought up: to use heritage as street cred. itâs like damn, being âactuallyâ chinese doesnât make ur opinions any less rank. sure you might be âactuallyâ chinese, but do you have basic reading comprehension and literary criticism skills? no? ok then sit your ass back down) many of us are most comfortable in english! so we produce our content in english! but we also DO often have a somewhat privileged access to the culture that underlies mdzs and can explain it in a language that other non-Chinese fans can understand. so itâs not surprising that people flock to us for answers to their cultural questions. and like. if we think we know the answer, itâs natural for us to try and help. this is fandom! weâre here to have fun and find community! and it is definitely a little bit nice to have my culture treated as something desirable for once instead of just like. a weird exotic curiosity that no one really cares too deeply about. and, since a lot of us are able to do things that non-Chinese fans canât (research in chinese, for example. ask family members for help and more information etc.) we end up just having more information to share.
I think this sometimes results in a tendency for fandom at large to put heritage/diaspo fans on pedestals and tout them as authorities (or use our conflicting viewpoints as ammunition in fandom drama) when the diaspo in question have repeatedly stated that they should not be taken as authorities on something -- and then, once you reach critical mass, your reputation starts to precede you, and I think thereâs a lot of misconceptions of how a lot of diaspo act in this fandom simply because of that phenomenon. most of us know that weâre not ultimate arbiters of some kind of cultural gateway, and it can be very tiring both to be treated as such when we insist we are not, and then punished by other people who assume that we acted like we were.
i donât think thereâs a benefit in trying to keep en fandom and cn fandom totally separate, and I also think itâs unfair to consider the cn fandom the ârealâ fandom. i think that way lies deeper misunderstandings, gatekeeping, etc. i think we can definitely acknowledge the differences between them, but i think trying to make meaningful connections between fandom circles is really valuable! i donât think iâve ever made it a secret that modao is my first cmedia fandom? so itâs also the first time iâve had reason to interact with chinese fandom, which has been super enlightening and interesting! iâve made some super cool friends and learned a lot about how fandom works in china, how itâs similar and how it differs from the fandom iâm familiar with.
and then, kind of circling back around, thereâs also a bit of a sense like, okay, so if diaspo donât belong in the CN fandom, but we canât talk about our own culture with some degree of confidence in EN fandom, then like..... where do we go...? if we see EN fandom doing something that contradicts our cultural knowledge, do we just. not say anything? do we not count unless weâve already ingratiated ourselves to CN fandom? thatâs probably where the core of my strong disagreement comes from, because criticism of diaspora fans as like, acting above their station so to speak, feels just like a tired continuation of the same shit weâve had to deal with for our whole lives, being told weâre not good enough for anywhere and that we should just be quiet and keep our heads down and get over it. that our opinions, despite coming from a unique perspective with a unique relationship to the subject in question, are less valid or real than âactualâ chinese people, you know? and sometimes i see that and im like lmfao just sneer at me for being jook-sing and leave then if youâre so eager to think of me as lesser.
so yeah, basically im of a few minds: true! diaspora fans donât get to throw their weight around just because theyâre diaspo. they donât get carte blanche to act like bullies or try to shape the fandom to their own personal liking and crusade against people who disagree with them. they donât get to pretend their heritage makes them superior to everyone else, and i think western diaspora especially need to be careful when asserting any kind of moral lens over the text to acknowledge that we have our own biases to interrogate. i am not immune.meme etc. on the other hand, this vein of criticism tends to put all diaspo in a bit of a double-bind, and also, however unintentionally, plays into the general, continuous trend of dismissing diaspora for being diaspora, and iâm really not about that. i donât think thatâs the motivation behind opinions like this, but i do think that when the basis for the argument hinges on the idea that diaspora are not ârealâ chinese, no matter how much I too have beef with certain diaspora fans, the argument needs to be revisited.Â

Idk in JA, but in the US unless we give up autonomy of our DNA to a private company that actively work with oppressive ass govement systems the overpenalized Black folks, have the fucking money for it or can track the linages of our names through official document. No...we cannot pinpoint our exact African genetic makeup. It is a BLESSING to have those resources, time, and mental/spiritual energy for it. If you dont get that idk how to make you understand that. I even lucked out in the fact that my MOTHER SIDE ancestral line started recorded keeping as early as it did. That how most Black people in the US have to navigate, it while there is a tendency for us to throw a dart a the continent of Africa and pick from there (which is not fair to the rich diversity of African and the genuine possible connections that can be found)
And YES, throught it would be very much clear that I still practice older Black American made traditions such as quilt making, foraging, ritual spirituality in worship, gatekeeping, namesake keeping, SO MUCH MORE.
I teach it everyday irl even as a rural Black archivists in workshops and exhibits with GENUINELY donated materials and photos and films made by us for us (shout out to Zora) I do this because I appreciate the legacy my ancestors created HERE in the US where I was born, where my granny grannies where born and where I will prolly die at and wish to improve for my future legacy and linage to live in.
Step further, I even work with African (Ghanaian, Igbo>Nigerian, and Black SA so far) because they want a greater understand of Black American history and progress. I'm 1000% into integrating the ideals of BOTH African and AA cultural values and schools of thought.
You tryna to use my age as some kinda condensing 'gotcha' pass is fuckin weird. Both arguments made here stem from Black people critical analyzing are histories and trearments of traditions on both individuals and on a broader cultural level at multiple levels (personal region>country>continent). Me being young not the death of the argument.
You're weird for continually bringing the perspective of white people and their position of oppression into this conversation, this is not their place, I made this argument for inner-community introspection.
Also I know that there are plenty of south/rural Black folk that are highly defensive, boardline ignorant in their push back against more pan-African ideologies and CT. Just like there are plenty of purley African or non-US diaspora folk out there they think AA are the ones causing all problems of antiblackness in the world with out cultural makings and makings.
Who-woulda-thunk that an entire ethnic group of people who where stolen from their homeland and of having humanity would sharply guard the very thing they struggled, died, created and loved over for over 400 years? Especially from people who look like them yet demand of them to change without ever learning about why we have to live how we live and how we got to where we got. Almost all Black people EVERYWHERE are inherently born with the urge to suppress ourselves and culture from others for the sake of keeping it from being stolen from us again.

In the story Walker dramatize the point of irony in Wangero's condemning the rural/southern Black traditions, culture, and history she comes from at the same time wanting to sterilely memorialize it like is not a life style being kept very much alive by her sister and mother. She does not ask how yo make the quilt or what does the quilt language means or for scraps of her family clothing to start her own. Once denied to use display her family culture in lull of only learning it, she calls her family stuck and backwards and leaves.
Why must Wangero forsake Dee, to greater herself? Why must she erase a whole, vital and alive part of herself for values and culture that she may only have a vague and distant connection to? Did she do a genetic blood test to see she originates from a place in Africa to even know if she has validity to the Wangero? (This is a short story, we read it with the expectation we will not get that thought of a backstory or diffrent POVs)
Yes, the story had the bias of Mama. It should...its from her perspective
Mama does NOT make fun of Wangero's name and it change. Even when Wangero gives her permission to not say it because it is hard to learn a whole new name in a language/dialect you do not know. Mama honors the name change and says it a few times until she gets it right.
Hakim-a-Barber does not offer her the same patience, and tell her to just call him Hakim. Now is it petty that he is referred to as Asalmalakim for the rest of the story, yes.
I will not lie and say that on my first read I throught it was a confusion for his real name by Mama and on the 2nd go through I read into the more malicious intent on Mama part from her perspective. Just like after it is decided that Maggie will keep the quilts, she refuse to Wangero as Mrs. Wangero with the intent to separate her from them. But still there is the implication that they would not put in the patience for Mama and Maggie who legit do not know these things to learn. Mama even made the correct assumption that Hakim was Muslim like the one Muslim family she does knows. I am giving Mama the pass to be petty after she watches them watch her struggle and try to learn new things for their sake and they simply give condescending looks and placates to her. She is showcasing all her hospitality to be met with an air of 'we are better than you, because we have connected back to Africa' when Mama and Maggie are very much knowledge about their lineage and the work, stuggle, love, and traditions that made it.
Why must the suffering just as much as the triumps of out people be erased for the sake of a vague concept of growth through reconnection to a romanticization of Africa roots that is weaponized agaisnt Black American traditionalist??
Is Dee the name of an oppressor? Or is Dee the name taken from Dicie, which is taken from the mothers of survivors of slavery who learned to thrive and make a worthy livelyhood for where they live and for their children to follow?
That is the critical thought I want pondered from this story.
If Wangero had came into this situation with pondering injections of "hey did you know that the xyz thing that we do here maybe be connected to what xyz thing is practiced in this place in Africa? We may even have ancestral connections to xyz places in Africa! Why do we do this thing in the US, what events and decisions shapped this and how can I keep them relevant to me?" Things would have been a lot more productive and not have split this family so.

If you even want a real life example of this look at the movement to revitalize Tutnese in America and where it comes from. My dad side great aunties still speak it fluently and my dad used to play Tut games with me and my nieces when we were growing up and we didnt even now it! If we have Wangeros perspective to erase the very direct and alive lineage to us for the sake of greater knowledge in connection to Africa (specific parts to us we would not know fully without a lot of resources that, once again, are not available to a cast amount of Black American) it and the rich, fierce and loving history of Tut would be lost to us.

i know this took me forever 2 answer SORRY but i just checked off all the things on my to do list for the first time in days today so. Essay incoming ladies!
ok im SO glad u sent me this bc itâs so so good. itâs a genuinely thoughtful criticism of the politics in legend of korra (altho i think its sometimes a little mean to korra unnecessarily like thereâs no reason to call her a âpetulant bratâ or say that she throws tantrums but i do understand their point about her being an immature and reactionary hero, which iâll get back to) and i think the author has a good balance between acknowledging like Yeah the lok writers were american liberals and wrote their show accordingly and Also writing a thorough analysis of lokâs politics that felt relevant and interesting without throwing their hands up and saying this is all useless liberal bullshit (which i will admit that i tend to do).
this article essentially argues that the red lotus antagonists of s3 were right. And thatâs not an uncommon opinion i think but this gives it serious weight. Like, everything that zaheerâs gang did was, in context, fully understandable. of course the red lotus would be invested in making sure that the physically and spiritually and politically most powerful person in the world ISNT raised by world leaders and a secret society of elites thatâs completely unaccountable to the people! of course the red lotus wants to bring down tyrannical governments and allow communities to form and self govern organically! and the writers dismiss all of that out of hand by 1. consistently framing the red lotus as insane and murderous (korra never actually gives zaheerâs ideas a chance or truly considers integrating them into her own approach) 2. representing the death of the earth queen as not just something thatâs not necessarily popular (what was with makoâs bootlicker grandma, iâd love to know) but as something that causes unbelievable violence and chaos in ba sing se (which, like, a lot of history and research will tell you that people in disasters tend towards prosocial behaviors). so the way the story frames each of these characters and ideologies is fascinating because like. if you wanted to write season 3 of legend of korra with zaheer as the protagonist and korra as the antagonist, you wouldnât actually have to change the sequence of events at all, really. these writers in particular and liberal writers in general LOVE writing morally-gray-but-ultimately-sympathetic characters (like, almost EVERY SINGLE fire nation character in the first series, who were full on violent colonizers but all to a degree were rehabilitated in the eyes of the viewer) but instead of framing the red lotus as good people who are devoted to justice and freedom and sometimes behave cruelly to get where theyre trying to go, they frame them as psychopaths and murderers who have good intentions donât really understand how to make the world a better place.
and the interesting thing about all this, about the fact that the red lotus acted in most cases exactly as it should have in context and the only reason its relegated to villain status is bc the show is written by liberals, is that the red lotus actually points out really glaring sociopolitical issues in universe! like, watching the show, u think well why the fuck HASNâT korra done anything about the earth queen oppressing her subjects? why DOESNâT korra do anything about the worse than useless republic president? why the hell are so many people living in poverty while our mains live cushy well fed lives? how come earth kingdom land only seems to belong to various monarchs and settler colonists, instead of the people who are actually indigenous to it? the show does not want to answer these questions, because american liberal capitalism literally survives on the reality of oppressive governments and worse than useless presidents and people living in poverty while the middle/upper class eats and indigenous land being stolen. if the show were to answer these questions honestly, the answer would be that the status quo in real life (and the one on the show that mirrors real life) Has To Change.
So they avoid answering these questions honestly in order for the thesis statement to be that the status quo is good. and the only way for the show to escape answering these questions is for them to individualize all these broad social problems down into Good people and Bad people. so while we have obvious bad ones like the earth queen we also have all these capitalists and monarchs and politicians who are actually very nice and lovely people who would never hurt anyone! which is just such an absurd take and itâs liberal propaganda at its best. holding a position of incredible political/economic power in an unjust society is inherently unethical and maintaining that position of power requires violence against the people you have power over. which is literally social justice 101. but thereâs literally no normal, average, not-politically-powerful person on the show. so when leftist anarchism is presented and says that destroying systems that enforce extreme power differentials is the only way to bring peace and freedom to all, the show has already set us up to think, hey, fuck you, top cop lin beifong and ford motor ceo asami sato are good people and good people like them exist! and all we have to do to move forward and progress as a society is to make sure we have enough good individuals in enough powerful positions (like zuko as the fire lord ending the war, or wu as the earth king ending the monarchy)! which is of course complete fiction. liberal reform doesnât work. but by pretending that it could work by saying that the SYSTEM isnt rotten itâs just that the people running it suck and we just need to replace those people, it automatically delegitimizes any radical movements that actually seek to change things.
and thatâs the most interesting thing about this article to me is that it posits that the avatar...might actually be a negative presence in the world. the avatar is the exact same thing: itâs a position of immense political and physical power bestowed completely randomly, and depending on the moral character and various actions of who fills that position at any given time, millions of people will or wonât suffer. like kyoshi, who created the fascist dai li, like roku, who refused to remove a genocidal dictator from power, like aang, who facilitated the establishment of a settler colonial state on earth kingdom land. like korra! sheâs an incredibly immature avatar and a generally reactionary lead. iâve talked about this at length before but she never actually gets in touch with the needs of the people. sheâs constantly running in elite circles, exposed only to the needs and squabbles of the upper class! how the hell is she supposed to understand the complexities of oppression and privilege when she was raised by a chess club with inordinate amounts of power and associates almost exclusively with politicians and billionaires?? from day 1 we see that she tends to see things in very black and white ways which is FINE if youâre a privileged 17 yr old girl seeing the world for the first time but NOT FINE if youâre the single most powerful person in the world! Yeah, korra thinks the world is probably mostly fine and just needs a little whipping into shape every couple years, because all she has ever known is a mostly fine world! in s1 when mako mentions that he as a homeless impoverished teenager worked for a gang (which is. Not weird. Impoverished people of every background are ALWAYS more likely to resort to socially unacceptable ways of making money) korra is like âyou guys are criminals?????!!!!!â she was raised in perfect luxury by a conservative institution and just never developed beyond that. So sure, if the red lotus raised her anarchist, probably a lot wouldâve been different/better, but....they didnât. and korra ended up being a reactionary and conservative avatar who protected monarchs and colonialist politicians. The avatar as a position is completely subject to the whims of whoever is currently the avatar. and not only does that suck for everyone who is not the avatar, not only is it totally unfair to whatever kid who grows up knowing the fate of the world is squarely on their shoulders, but it as a concept is a highly individualist product of the authorsâ own western liberal ideas of progress! the idea that one good leader can fix the world (or should even try) based on their own inherent superiority to everyone else is unbelievably flawed and ignores the fact that all real progress is brought about as a result of COMMUNITY work, as a result of normal people working for themselves and their neighbors!
the broader analysis of bending was really interesting to me too, but im honestly not sure i Totally agree with it. the article pretty much accepts the showâs assertion that bending is a privilege (and frankly backs it up much better than the original show did, but whatever), and i donât think thatâs NECESSARILY untrue since it is, like, a physical advantage (the author compares it to, for example, the fact that some people are born athletically gifted and others are born with extreme physical limitations), but i DO think that it discounts the in universe racialization of bending. in any sequel to atla that made sense, bending as a race making fact would have been explored ALONGSIDE the physical advantages it bestows on people. colonialism and its aftermath is generally ignored in this article which is its major weakness i think, especially in conjunction with bending. you can bring up the ideas the author did about individual vs community oriented progress in the avatar universe while safely ignoring the colonialism, but you canât not bring up race and colonialism when you discuss bending. especially once you get to thinking about how water/earth/airbenders were imprisoned and killed specifically because bending was a physical advantage, and that physical advantage was something that would have given colonized populations a means of resistance and that the fire nation wanted to keep to itself.
i think thatâs the best lens thru which to analyze bending tbh! like in the avatar universe bending is a tool that different ethnic groups tend to use in different ways. at its best, bending actually doesnât represent social power differences (despite representing a physical power difference) because itâs used to represent/maintain community solidarity. like, take the water tribe. katara being the last waterbender, in some way, makes her the last of a part of swt CULTURE. the implication is that when there were a lot of waterbenders in the south, they dedicated their talents to building community and helping their neighbors, because this was something incredibly culturally important and important to the water tribe as a community. the swt as a COLLECTIVE values bending for what it can do for the entire tribe, which counts for basically every other talent a person can have (strength, creativity, etc). the fire nation, by contrast, distorts the community value of bending by racializing it: anyone who bends an element that isnât fire is inherently NOT fire nation (and therefore inherently inferior) and, because of the physical power that bending confers, anyone who bends an element that isnât fire is a threat to fire nation hegemony. and in THAT framework of bending, itâs something that intrinsically assigns worth and reifies race in a way thatâs conveniently beneficial to the oppressor.
it IS worth talking about how using Element as a way to categorize people reifies nations, borders, and race in a way that is VERY characteristic of white american liberals. i tried to be conscious of that (and the way that elements/bending can act in DIFFERENT ways, depending on cultural context) but i think itâs pretty clear that the writers did intend for element to unequivocally signify nation (and, by extension, race), which is part of why they screwed up mixed families so bad in lok. when theyâve locked themselves into this idea that element=nation=race, they end up with sets of siblings like mako and bolin or kya tenzin and bumi, who all âtakeâ after only one parent based on the element that they bend. which is just completely stupid but very indicative of how the writers actually INTENDED element/bending to be a race making process. and its both fucked up and interesting that the writers display the same framework of race analysis that the canonical antagonists of atla do.

letâs talk racial micro aggressions, because iâve been seeing a lot of them being used online toward people speaking out about racism and even in fandoms unfortunately, so i think itâs time we have a talk. this is gonna be a semi long one, so buckle up.
just for reference, im asian american. because of that iâve gone my entire life experiencing racism and discrimination simple because im not white. of course, i have definitely had it better than a lot of people, but that doesnât take away from my experiences at all. i grew up hating the way i looked, trying to fix myself because i genuinely thought something was wrong with me. this led to years and years of insecurity and self hatred. something i had to go through alone, because my family was white and i was too afraid to tell them how i felt. i was afraid they wouldnât understand. itâs still something i struggle with, though itâs gotten better.
growing up, as stated before, i was around white people. growing up in a very white town, i unfortunately wasnât formally educated on racism or what micro aggressions were, i just knew that certain comments made me uneasy and uncomfortable, and hurt my feelings. it wasnât until i was older, when i started using social media that i really came to understand what all of this was.Â
a lot of you who have white privilege are using it to uplift bipoc voices, and i think thatâs great. however itâs also important to acknowledge that many people who are actively anti racist still have implicit biases, which can lead to microaggressions.
first of all, what are microaggressions? you may or may not be familiar with the term. if youâre not, thatâs okay! you can use this post to educate yourself and make sure you donât make these mistakes in the future. microaggressions are defined as brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioural, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative prejudicial slights and insults toward any group, particularly culturally marginalized groups.
basically, intentional or unintentional derogatory and prejudice behaviors directed towards marginalized groups.
these are very harmful to marginalized groups, mostly because theyâre not as blatant as outright racism, misogyny, homophobia, etc. this makes it often hard to detect, and you may have found yourself using micro aggressions at some point in your life. thatâs not important though, whatâs important is that, if you have used them in the past, you understand what you said or did was wrong, and that you learn from it.
now, what are specific racial micro aggressions? iâve compiled a list of them under the cut, and explained why these are insulting and harmful to poc.
âwhere are you really fromâ â this insinuates that we will always be seen as foreigners, and not citizens to our own country. it brings on a feeling of not being good enough and that we will not be accepted.Â
ânot everythingâs about raceâ â if youâre white stop telling bipoc how to feel about race. we are tired of it. please donât speak over us when we are expressing our discomfort. if poc people are telling you something is racist, itâs racist. stop trying to argue with us, as you are not the ones being affected by it.Â
âyour food is so weirdâ â itâs only weird to you because it hasnât been westernized or americanized. insisting that foreign foods are weird or gross because you arenât used to it, is hurtful. itâs insulting.Â
âall asians look the sameâ â by saying this, youâre taking away our individuality. asia is a huge continent, not all of us follow the same traditions and not all of us look the same. itâs not a funny joke, and it never has been.Â
âyouâre pretty for a *insert any race here*â â this is just such a backhanded compliment. it implies that we are not typically or conventionally pretty. it has the same negative connotations as saying âyouâre really good...for a girlâ. thatâs misogynistic for the same reasons saying this is racist.Â
âi donât see colorâ â again, youâre basically erasing our individuality and culture and telling us we shouldnât embrace it. many pocs even completely distance themselves from their cultures to seek white validation, which is in every sense of the word, upsetting. people want to fit in so bad that theyâre willing to leave behind their entire culture. something that sucks about being adopted at such a young age from a white family, is that i have never had a connection with my culture. i know nothing about it, and that hurts. i rationalized in my head that the reason i didnât learn about it sooner was because i was happy, but that was a lie i told myself for years. the sad thing is, is that because i wasnât connected to my culture at all, i fit in better and had an easier time making friends then other pocs in my school.Â
assuming all asian people are smart or good at math â stop. itâs not funny. never has been. the stereotype that all asians are smart is not a compliment, and puts a lot of pressure on us as individuals. it objectifies us, assuming we are more like machines and not actual people. long story short, itâs dehumanizing.Â
âim not/cant be racist i have black friendsâ â contrary to popular belief, yes you can be. you can still have a racial bias while being friends with bipoc people. being associated with poc people doesnât suddenly mean youâre not racist. you may even make racist jokes and think itâs okay because they donât tell you to stop. just because they are seemingly unbothered does not mean itâs not still racist. a lot of times we are uncomfortable in situations like that, but are too afraid to speak up in fear of our feelings being invalidated or being told to lighten up because itâs just a joke. saying weâre too sensitive when it comes to making mockeries of our races and cultures, is also a micro aggression.Â
saying âyou peopleâ or âyâallâ when talking, usually negatively, about a person of a specific race â youâre generalizing an entire group because of one bad experience which is just contributing to the stereotypes and racism we face daily. one or a few bad interactions with a person of a different race does not speak for an entire population.
clutching your bag tight when a poc person, usually black or latinx, stands next to you or following them in the store â the way i still have to explain this one in 2020. they are not criminals, but by doing this, youâre contributing to the stereotype that they are all criminals and thugs, which simply isnât true. this stereotype is very damaging and harmful, as it also contributes to the systematic oppression of those people.Â
assuming someone only got a certain job or position because theyâre bipoc â this insinuates that we did not work hard to get where we are, and that we did not deserve what we got. we simply got it because we arenât white. affirmative action comes up a lot in this conversation. all affirmative action does is help decide between equally qualified people by favoring the ones who suffer from discrimination in society, but it does not reserve spots for them.
assuming someone knows how to speak mandarin because theyâre asian â asia is a large continent with A LOT of languages and cultures. not everyone is chinese. not everyone speaks the same language. itâs insulting and adds to the already hurtful stereotype that all asians look the same.
âyou speak english really wellâ or âhow did you learn to speak english so wellâ â itâs called practicing because people have been making fun of those with accents for years, simply because they are not used to it. being surprised when a poc speaks english well implies that you may think because theyâre not white, they are less educated. weâve simply assimilated because our cultures are constantly rejected and mocked by white people and even other pocs. this also contributes to the notion that westerners are more âcivilizedâ or that they are better, because they(generally speaking this obviously doesnât apply to everyone)make no effort to learn our cultures, but we have to learn theirs in order to be seen as âacceptableâ.
âbut *insert race* are racist tooâ or pointing out immoral things other countries do when people of that race speak up about racism - youâre redirecting the conversation to avoid responsibility. you donât actually care about those issues, you just want to invalidate our struggles by pointing out that a place many of us have not been to in a long time, or ever, is very flawed. we have no say in what that government chooses to do. not all places are a democracy, and many democracies around the world are flawed.
something important to remember is that anyone can be guilty of implicit bias and micro aggressions. this is not selective to one race.Â
if you have anymore of these, please feel free to add on. also, if youâre a poc and something i wrote made you uncomfortable, please tell me. i want to make sure im being truthful with what i said. i did do research for some of these, and some were based on personal experiences, but if you want to add to something or you want me to change or delete something do not hesitate to call me out.Â
unfortunately they and other racial stereotypes are very prevalent in american media, which has normalized it in our society. this post is solely meant to educate if you werenât previously aware of the dangers micro aggressions have on minorities. i started the list because i was tired of seeing so much normalized racism online, but i hope you learned something useful with this. if you stuck around this long, thank you for listening. i appreciate it a lot.Â

hmmmmmmmmmm maybe iâll write an Introspective Musing Post about my relationship to religion and their depiction in stories because iâve pondering about this topic lately
so for those who are reading this and DONâT know whatâs been going on... thereâs this webcomic i fell in love with some years ago, about six years actually, that depicts a post-apocalyptic fantasy/horror adventure set in the nordic countries. it had, and has still, some very uncomfortable flaws regarding racial representation, and the creator has historically not dealt very well with criticism towards it. itâs a whole Thing. my relationship with this comic has fluctuated a lot, since there are a lot of elements in it i DO love and i still feel very nostalgic about, and like idk i felt like i trust my skills in critical thinking enough to keep reading. aaand then the creator went a teensy bit off the deep end created a whole minicomic which is like... a lukewarm social media dystopia where christians are oppressed (and also everyone is a cute bunny, including our lord and saviour jesus christ). which is already tonedeaf enough considering there are religious people who DO get prosecuted for their faith, like, thatâs an actual reality for a lot of people - but as far as i can tell, usually not christians. and then thereâs an afterword thatâs like, âanyway i got recently converted and realized iâm a disgusting human being full of sin who doesnât deserve redemption but jesus loves me so iâll be fine!! remember to repent for your sins xoxoâ and a bunch of other stuff and ITâS KIND OF REALLY CONCERNING i have, uh, been habitually looking at the reactions to and discussions around this, maybe itâs not very self care of me but thereâs a lot of overwhelming things rn and itâs fantastically distracting, yknow? like, overall this situation is fairly reminiscent of the whole jkr thing. creator of a series that is Fairly Beloved, does something hurtful, handles backlash in a weird way, a lot of people start taking distance from Beloved Series or find ways to enjoy it on their own terms, creator later reveals to have been fully radicalized and releases a whole manifesto, and any and all criticism gets framed as harassment and proving them right. of course, one of them is a super rich person with a LOT of media power and a topic that is a lot more destructive in our current zeitgeist, and the other is an independent webcomic creator, so itâs not the same situation. just similar vibez ya feel as a result of this, i have been Thinking. and just this feels like some sort of defeat like god dammit she got me i AM thinking about the topic she wrote about!!! i should dismiss the whole thing!!! but thinking about topics is probably a good thing so hey lets go. me, iâm agnostic. i understand that this is a âlazyâ position to take, but itâs what works for me. i simply do not vibe with organized religion, personally. (i had the wikipedia page for âchaos magicâ open in a tab for several weeks, if that helps.) i was raised by atheists in a majorly atheist culture. christian atheist, i should specify. norway has been mostly and historically lutheran, and religion has usually been a private and personal thing. it turns out the teacher i had in 7th grade was mormon, but i ONLY found out because he showed up in a tv series discussing religious groups in norway later, and he was honestly one of the best teachers i have ever had - he reignited the whole classâ interest in science, math, and dungeons and dragons. it was a real âwait WHATâ moment for my teenage self. i think i was briefly converted to christianity by my friend when i was like 7, who grew up in a christian family (i visited them a couple times and always forgot they do prayers before dinner. oops!), but like, she ALSO made me believe she was the guardian of a secret magic orb that controls the entire world and if i told anybody the world would burn down in 3 seconds. i only suspected something was off when one day the Orb ran on batteries, and another day the Orb had to be plugged in to charge. in my defense i really wanted to be part of a cool fantasy plot. i had no idea how to be a christian beyond âuuuuh believe in god i guessâ so it just faded away on its own. when i met this friend several years later, she was no longer christian. i think every childhood friend of mine who grew up in a christian family, was no longer christian when they grew up. most notably my closest internet friend whose family was catholic - she had several siblings, and each of them took a wildly different path, from hippie treehugger to laveyan satanist or something in that area. (i joined them for a sermon in a church when they visited my town. my phone went off during it because i had forgotten to silence it. oops!) ((i also really liked their motherâs interpretation of purgatory. she explained it as a bath, not fire. i like that.)) i have never had any personal negative experiences with christianity, despite being openly queer/gay/trans. the only time someone has directly told me iâm going to hell was some guy who saw me wearing a hoodie on norwayâs constitution day. yeah i still remember that you bastard iâve sworn to be spiteful about it till the day i die!! iâve actually had much more insufferable interactions with the obnoxious kind of atheists - like yes yes i agree with you on a lot but that doesnât diminish your ability to be an absolute hypocrite, it turns out? i remember going to see the movie ânoahâ with a friend who had recently discovered reddit atheism and it was just really exhausting to discuss it with her. one of these Obnoxious Atheists is my Own Mother. which is a little strange, honestly, because she LOVES visiting churches for the Aesthetic and Architecture. we cannot go anywhere without having to stop by a pretty church to Admire and Explore. IâVE BEEN IN SO MANY CHURCHES FOR AN ATHEIST RAISED NON-CHRISTIAN. iâve been to the vatican TWICE (i genuinely donât even know how much of my extended family is christian. up north in the tiny village i come from, i believe my uncle is the churchkeeper, and itâs the only building in the area that did not get burnt down by the the nazis during ww2 - mostly because soldiers needed a place to sleep. still donât know whether or not said uncle believes or not, because hey, itâs Personal) i think my biggest personal relationship to religion, and christianity specifically, has been academic. yeah, we learned a brief synopsis of world religions at school (and i remember the class used to be called âchristianity, religion, and ethicsâ and got changed to âreligion, beliefs, and ethicsâ which is cool. it was probably a big discourse but i was a teen who didnt care), but also my bachelor degree is in art history, specifically western art history because itâs a vast sprawling topic and they had to distill it as best they could SIGHS. western art history is deeply entangled with the history of the church, and i think the most iâve ever learnt about christianity is through these classes (one of my professors wrote an article about how jesus can be interpreted as queer which i Deeply Appreciate). i also specifically tried to diversify my academic input by picking classes such as âdepiction of muslims and jewish people in western medieval artâ and âart and religionâ when i was an exchange student in canada, along with 101 classes in anthropology and archaeology. because i think human diversity and culture is very cool and i want to absorb that knowledge as best as i can. i think my exchange semester in canada was the most religiously diverse space have ever been in, to be honest. now as an adult i have more christian friends again, but friends who chose it for themselves, and who practice in ways that sound good and healthy, like a place of solace and community for them. the vast majority of my friends are queer too, yknow?? iâve known too many people who have seen these identities as fated opposites, but they arenât, theyâre just parts of who people are. itâs like... i genuinely love people having their faiths and beliefs so much. i love people finding that space where they belong and feel safe in. i love people having communities and heritages and connections. i deeply respect and admire opening up that space for faith within any other communities, like... if iâm going to listen to a podcast about scepticism and cults, i am not going to listen to it if itâs just an excuse to bash religion. i think the search for truth needs to be compassionate, always. you can acknowledge that crystals are cool and make people happy AND that multi level marketing schemes are deeply harmful and prey on people in vulnerable situaitons. YOU KNOW???? so nowâs when i bring up Apocalypse Comic again. one of the things i really did like about it was, ironically, how it handled religion. in its setting, people have returned to old gods, and their magic drew power from their religion. characters from different regions had different beliefs and sources. in the first arc, they meet the spirit of a lutheran pastor, who ends up helping them with her powers. it was treated as, in the creators own words, âjust another mythologyâ. and honestly? i love that. it was one of the nicest depictions iâve seen of christianity in fiction, and as something that could coexist with other faiths. I Vibe With That. and then, uh, then... bunny dystopia comic. it just... it just straight up tells you christianity is literally the only way to..?? be a good person??? i guess?? iâm still kind of struggling to parse what exactly it wanted to say. the evil social media overlord bird tells you the bible makes you a DANGEROUS FREETHINKER, but the comic also treats rewriting the bible or finding your own way to faith as something,, Bad. The Bible Must Remain Unsullied. Never Criticize The Bible. also, doing good things just for social media clout is bad and selfish. you should do good things so you donât burn in hell instead. is that the message? it reads a lot like the comic creator already had the idea for the comic, but only got the urge to make it after she was converted and needed to spread the good word. you do you i guess!! i understand that sheâs new to this and probably Going Through Something, and this is just a step on her journey. but the absolute self-loathing she described in her afterword... it does not sound good. iâm just some agnostic kid so what do i know, but i do not think that kind of self-flagellating is a kind faith to have for yourself. i might not ever have been properly religious, but you know what i AM familiar with? a brain wired for ocd and intrusive thoughts. for a lot of my life iâve struggled with my own kind of purity complex. iâve had this really strange sensitivity for things that felt âtaintedâ. iâve experienced having to remove more and more words from my vocabulary because they were Bad and i did not want to sully my sentences. it stacked, too - if a word turned out to be an euphemism for something, i could never feel comfortable saying it again. i still struggle a bit with these things, but i have confronted these things within myself. iâve had to make myself comfortable with imperfection and âtaintedâ things and accept that these are just, arbitrary categories my mind made up. maybe thatâs the reason i canât do organized religion even if i found one that fit for me - just like diets can trigger disordered eating, i think it would carve some bad brainpaths for me. so yeah iâm worried i guess! iâm worried when people think itâs so good that she finally found the correct faith even if itâs causing all this self-hate. is there really not a better way? or are they just trusting sheâll find it? and yeah itâs none of my concern, itâs like, i worry for jkr too but i do not want her within miles of my trans self thANKS. so like, i DO enjoy media that explores faith and what it means for you. my favourite band is the oh hellos, which DOES draw on faith and the songwriterâs experience with it. because of my religious iliteracy most of it has flown over my head for years and iâm like âoh hey this is gayâ and then only later realize it was about god all along Probably. i like what theyâve done with the place. also, stormlight archive - i had NO idea sanderson was mormon, the way he writes his characters, many of whom actively discuss religion and their relationship to it. i love that about the books, honestly. Media That Explores Religion In A Complex And Compassionate Way... we like that iâve been thinking about my own stories too, and how i might want to explore faith in them. most of my settings are based on magic and itâs like, what role does religion have in a world where gods are real and makes u magic. in sparrow spellcasterâs story, xe creates? summons? an old god - brings them to life out of the idea of them. itâs a story about hubris, mostly. then thereâs iphimery, the story where i am actively fleshing out a pantheon. thereâs no doubt the gods are real in the fantasy version of iphimery, they are the source of magic and sustain themselves on slivers of humanity in exchange. but in the modern version, where they are mostly forgotten? thatâs some room for me to explore, i think. especially the character of timian, who comes from a smaller town and moves to a large and diverse city. in the fantasy story, the guardian deity chooses his sister as a vessel. in the modern setting, that does not happen, and i donât yet know what does, but i really want timian to be someone who struggles with his identity - his faith, his sexuality, the expectations cast upon him by his hometown... iâm sure itâs a clichĂŠ story retold through a million gay characters but i want to do it too okay. i want to see him carve out his own way of existing within the world because i care him and want to see him thrive!!! alrighty i THINK thatâs all i wanted to write. thanks if you read all of this, and if you didnât thatâs super cool have a nice day !

Final round-up of fan fic asks
I've gotten a few more interesting responses to the fan fic discussion so I'm going to round them all up here. This will be my final post on the topic until/unless there's a dramatic new development, or a particularly notable response I want to highlight. Thanks to everyone who brought their thoughts and experiences to the topic. I hope everyone at least feels heard.
The biggest piece of advice that I would like to offer is for everyone to focus on what they love rather than what they hate. If we all did that, the world would be a better place. Alongside that, I'd like to remind everyone to please support authors whose work you like. It's so important. Give them a kudos, give them a nice comment, recommend their work to others. You never know what kind of grief and harassment they are dealing with to bring you these great stories, and our support means a lot.

With regard to fandom and fan fic issue, my years of experience being part of very large fandoms has led me to believe that big accounts are v important in facilitating and enforcing the general consensus of the whole fandom. Unless there will be big accs who'll remind everyone of being respectful & just not being a dick over other's preferences, nothing will change.
This is also the reason why I think certain solo fandoms have adapted weird and twisted narratives as their general fandom story because no big acc has tried to police them & and say hey pls be rational. Whether we like it or not, in a place where how far voices, ideas, tweets, posts get heard is based on the number of followers you have, big accs will have the power and influence in creating/curating/shifting the narratives.
So, if you want to know why your/our fandom thinks like this in general, look at what big accs are tweeting/posting, look at what ideas & values they follow, look at their preferences or how strongly they react to certain situations. it's taxing and toxic for big accs given the nature of social media these days, but it's also the reality of system, the more followers/audience you have, the more influence you will have.
So to anyone reading this I hope we all practice more restraint and reflection before we post anything. Remember that words, no matter what medium you write it in, will always carry weight.
So true. It is easy - even for myself who spends a fair chunk of time answering people's asks - to forget that people can sometimes be impressionable and what we say can influence people whether that's our intent or not. I get used to thinking of myself as a regular guy just doing my own thing when sometimes my thoughts and words go well beyond where I initially posted them.
I think it's important for us to be careful what we say, and it's equally important to be careful what we take from what other people say. Especially when it comes to big claims. Always get a second, third, fourth opinion and don't be afraid to ask for clarification if something doesn't sit right or sounds confusing.
It's also important to reflect on how our words and actions might affect other people's experience of fandom, and err on the side of 'live and let live' wherever possible. It's great to have our own preferences and to champion them, but we should try to do so in a way that leaves space for other people and perspectives.
The more unique perspectives and the more friendly, open dialog there is, the healthier the community will be as a whole.
There's nothing wrong with encouraging and guiding growth in the particular areas we are interested in, as long as it doesn't step on, oppress or attack those who are peacefully enjoying something different.

I trust that you have arrived at that theory through your own experience and observation. I haven't personally spent much time immersed in this stuff so I can't claim to have any real insight or expertise. If you say that's your experience of it, then at the very least that's how you've seen things up to this point.
I just want to say that I think we should always be careful about making assumptions about people's age, gender/gender identity, etc.
There are plenty of good reasons to avoid doing that; because those assumptions could be very wrong, because those assumptions are often laced with ageism, sexism, etc., because those assumptions - even when correct - might not be an accurate basis for the conclusions we draw.
But the primary reason I recommend avoiding those type of assumptions is because anything that enables us to clump a group of people together in our minds like that will tend to make them easier to demonize and dehumanize. They are no longer individuals who are each responsible for their own unique perspectives, they are now 'the X group' who is known for 'A B C series of easily attackable ideas or behaviors'.
If we attribute undesirable traits and behaviors to a group of people we feel opposed to in some way, that makes us feel more righteous and justified in behaving unfairly toward them, dismissing their humanity and warring with them. It's just risky behavior to engage in, even when it's well-intentioned.
There might actually be some truth to what you're saying. It could very well be that most of these people are young, inexperienced, heteronormative, etc. but if that's the case then we should try to use those traits to better understand and empathize rather than to better dismiss and discredit.
Just my two cents on that.
It can be really frustrating dealing with what feels like other people attacking us, trying to oppress us, etc. - especially when there are more of them than there are of us. In my experience the best solutions to that sort of problem are generally the ones that focus on what we are doing and want to do rather than what they are doing that we don't want them to do.
As I am always preaching, we can't control what other people say, do or think. The only thing we have any control over is what we say, do and think (and how we respond to what they say, do and think).
I have found in my experience that the moment I step out of a conflict mindset and instead step into a problem-solving mindset, everything starts to come together. I feel better, my outlook is more positive, I can begin to see solutions and allies rather than problems and enemies, and most of all, I become more focused on what I am doing than what others are doing.
So I would recommend everyone who is invested in resolving these conflicts focus on that. "How can we best showcase and encourage the types of stories we enjoy?" instead of "How can we stop these other people from doing things we dislike?"

Hello again! Itâs anon #3 from the fanfic post. I really do appreciate reading your thoughts on various issues like this, so thank you for always taking time to write in depth. As for supporting without going to war, the simplest way has always been to just show appreciation for the creators, hype them up. Kudos are the easiest way on ao3 but comments in addition are great. This goes for all contentâart, fics, vids..etc. Creators love to see and read how people react to their content. Sharing is also great, fic recs are very helpful, just be cautious with art and reposting though. Hope this helps a bit!

Recommending stories, pointing people to the pages/websites of artists we like (as opposed to reposting), sharing our own ideas and approaches, encouraging people to try new things... all of this helps build healthier communities.

Martin Gurri's The Revolt Of The Public is from 2014, which means you might as well read the Epic of Gilgamesh. It has a second-edition-update-chapter from 2017, which might as well be Beowulf. The book is about how social-media-connected masses are revolting against elites, but the revolt has moved forward so quickly that a lot of what Gurri considers wild speculation is now obvious fact. I picked up the book on its "accurately predicted the present moment" cred, but it predicted the present moment so accurately that it's barely worth reading anymore. It might as well just say "open your eyes and look around".

In conclusion, 2011 was a weird year.
Gurri argues all of this was connected, and all of it was a sharp break from what came before. These movements were essentially leaderless. Some had charismatic spokespeople, like Daphni Leef in Israel or Tahrir-Square-Facebook-page-admin Wael Ghonim in Egypt, but these people were at best the trigger that caused a viral movement to coalesce out of nothing. When Martin Luther King marched on Washington, he built an alliance of various civil rights groups, unions, churches, and other large organizations who could turn out their members. He planned the agenda, got funding, ran through an official program of speakers, met with politicians, told them the legislation they wanted, then went home. The protests of 2011 were nothing like that. They were just a bunch of people who read about protests on Twitter and decided to show up.
Also, they were mostly well-off. Gurri hammers this in again and again. Daphni Leef had just graduated from film school, hardly the sort of thing that puts her among the wretched of the earth. All of these movements were mostly their respective countries' upper-middle classes; well-connected, web-savvy during an age when that meant something. Mostly young, mostly university-educated, mostly part of their countries' most privileged ethnic groups. Not the kind of people you usually see taking to the streets or building tent cities.
Some of the protests were more socialist and anarchist than others, but none were successfully captured by establishment strains of Marxism or existing movements. Many successfully combined conservative and liberal elements. Gurri calls them nihilists. They believed that the existing order was entirely rotten, that everyone involved was corrupt and irredeemable, and that some sort of apocalyptic transformation was needed. All existing institutions were illegitimate, everyone needed to be kicked out, that kind of thing. But so few specifics that socialists and reactionaries could march under the same banner, with no need to agree on anything besides "not this".

Gurri isn't shy about his contempt for this. Not only were these some of the most privileged people in their respective countries, but (despite the legitimately-sucky 2008 recession), they were living during a time of unprecedented plenty. In Spain, the previous forty years had seen the fall of a military dictatorship, its replacement with a liberal democracy, and a quintupling of GDP per capita from $6000 to $32000 a year - "in 2012, four years into the crisis there were more cell phones and cars per person in Spain than in the US". The indignado protesters in Spain had lived through the most peaceful period in Europe's history, an almost unprecedented economic boom, and had technologies and luxuries that previous generations could barely dream of. They had cradle-to-grave free health care, university educations, and they were near the top of their society's class pyramids. Yet they were convinced, utterly convinced, that this was the most fraudulent and oppressive government in the history of history, and constantly quoting from a manifesto called Time For Outrage!
So what's going on?
Our story begins (says Gurri) in the early 20th century, when governments, drunk on the power of industrialization, sought to remake Society in their own image. This was the age of High Modernism, with all of its planned cities and collective farms and so on. Philosopher-bureaucrat-scientist-dictator-manager-kings would lead the way to a new era of gleaming steel towers, where society was managed with the same ease as a gardener pruning a hedgerow.

Realistically this was all a sham. Alan Greenspan had no idea how to prevent recessions, scientific progress was slowing down, poverty remained as troubling as ever, and 50% of public school students stubbornly stayed below average. But the media trusted the government, the people trusted the media, and failures got swept under the rug by genteel agreement among friendly elites, while the occasional successes were trumpeted from the rooftops.
There was a very interesting section on JFKâs failure at the Bay of Pigs. Kennedy tried to invade Cuba, but the invasion failed very badly, further cementing Castroâs power and pushing him further into the Soviet camp. Representatives of the media met with Kennedy, Kennedy was very nice to them, and they all agreed to push a line of âlook, itâs his first time invading a foreign country, he tried his hardest, give him a break.â This seems to have successfully influenced the American public, so much so that Kennedyâs approval rating increased five points, to 83%, after the debacle!

In Gurri's telling, High Modernism had always been a failure, but the government-media-academia elite axis had been strong enough to conceal it from the public. Starting in the early 2000s, that axis broke down. People could have lowered their expectations, but in the real world that wasn't how things went. Instead of losing faith in the power of government to work miracles, people believed that government could and should be working miracles, but that the specific people in power at the time were too corrupt and stupid to press the "CAUSE MIRACLE" button which they definitely had and which definitely would have worked. And so the outrage, the protests - kick these losers out of power, and replace them with anybody who had the common decency to press the miracle button!

Any system that hasn't solved every problem is illegitimate. Solving problems is easy and just requires pressing the "CAUSE MIRACLE" button. Thus the protests. In 2011, enough dry tinder of anger had built up that everywhere in the world erupted into protest simultaneously, all claiming their respective governments were illegitimate. These protests were necessarily vague and leaderless, because any protest-leader would fall victim to the same crisis of authority and legitimacy that national leaders were suffering from. Any attempt to make specific demands would be pilloried because those specific demands wouldn't unilaterally end homelessness or racism or inequality or whatever else. The only stable state was a sort of omni-nihilism that refused to endorse anything.
(Iâm reminded of Tanner Greerâs claim that the great question of modernity is not âwhat can I accomplish?â or âhow do I succeed?â but rather âhow do I get management to take my side?â)
Gurri calls our current government a kind of "zombie democracy". The institutions of the 20th century - legislatures, universities, newspapers - continue to exist. But they are hollow shells, stripped of all legitimacy. Nobody likes or trusts them. They lurch forward, mimicking the motions they took in life, but no longer able to change or make plans or accomplish new things.

How do we escape this equilibrium? Gurri isn't sure. His 2017 afterword says he thinks we're even more in it now than we were in 2014. But he has two suggestions.
First, cultivate your garden. We got into this mess by believing the government could solve every problem. We're learning it can''t. We're not going to get legitimate institutions again until we unwind the overly high expectations produced by High Modernism, and the best way to do that is to stop expecting government to solve all your problems. So cultivate your garden. If you're concerned about obesity, go on a diet, or volunteer at a local urban vegetable garden, or organize a Fun Run in your community, do anything other than start a protest telling the government to end obesity. This is an interesting contrast to eg Just Giving, which I interpret as having the opposite model - if you want to fight obesity, you should work through the democratic system by petitioning the government to do something; trying to figure out a way to fight it on your own would be an undemocratic exercise of raw power. Gurri is recommending that we tear that way of thinking up at the root.
Second, start looking for a new set of elites who can achieve legitimacy. These will have to be genuinely decent and humble people - Gurri gives the example of George Washington. They won't claim to be able to solve everything. They won't claim the scientific-administrative mantle of High Modernism. They'll just be good honorable people who will try to govern wisely for the common good. Haha, yeah right.

Gurri divides the world between the Center and the Border. He thinks the Center - politicians, experts, journalists, officials - will be in a constant retreat, and the Border - bloggers, protesters, and randos - on a constant advance. His thesis got a boost when Brexit and Trump - both Border positions - crushed and embarrassed their respective Centers. But since then I'm not sure things have been so clear. The blogosphere is in retreat (maybe Substack is reversing this?), but the biggest and most mainstream of mainstream news organizations, like the New York Times are becoming more trusted and certainly more profitable. The new President of the US is a boring moderate career politician. The public cheers on elite censorship of social media. There haven't been many big viral protests lately except Black Lives Matter and the 1/6 insurrection, and both seemed to have a perfectly serviceable set of specific demands (defunding the police, decertifying the elections). Maybe I've just grown used to it, but it doesn't really feel like a world where a tiny remnant of elites are being attacked on all sides by a giant mob of entitled nihilists.

At the risk of being premature or missing Gurri's point, I want to try telling a story of how the revolt of the public and the crisis of legitimacy at least partially stalled.
Gurri talks a lot about Center and Border, but barely even mentions Left and Right. Once you reintroduce these, you have a solution to nihilism. The Left can come up with a laundry list of High Modernist plans that they think would solve all their problems, and the Right can do the same. Then one or the other takes control of government, gets thwarted by checks/balances/Mitch McConnell, and nothing happens. No American Democrat was forced to conclude that just because Obama couldn't solve all their problems, the promise of High Modernism was a lie. They just concluded that Obama could have solved all their problems, but the damn Republicans filibustered the bill. Likewise, the Republicans can imagine that Donald Trump would have made America great again if the media and elites and Deep State hadn't been blocking him at every turn. Donald Trump himself tells them this is true!
With this solution in place, you can rebuild trust in institutions. If you're a Republican, Fox News is trustworthy because it tells you the ways Democrats are bad. Some people say it's biased or inaccurate, but those people are Democrats or soft-on-Democrat RINO traitors. And if you're a Democrat, academic experts are completely trustworthy, and if someone challenges them you already know those challenges must be vile Republican lies. Lack of access to opposing views has been replaced with lack of tolerance for opposing views. And so instead of the public having to hate all elites, any given member of the public only needs to hate half of the elites.
You could think of this as a mere refinement of Gurri. But it points at a deeper critique. Suppose that US left institutions are able to maintain legitimacy, because US leftists trust them as fellow warriors in the battle against rightism (and vice versa). Why couldn't one make the same argument about the old American institutions? People liked and trusted the President and Walter Cronkite and all the other bipartisan elites because they were American, and fellow warriors in the battle against Communism or terrorism or poverty or Saddam or whatever. If this is true, the change stops looking like the masses suddenly losing faith in the elites and revolting, and more like a stable system of the unified American masses trusting the unified American elites, fissioning into two stable systems of the unified (right/left) masses trusting the unified (right/left) elites. Why did the optimal stable ingroup size change from nation-sized to political-tribe-sized?

The one exception to my disrecommendation is that you might enjoy the book as a physical object. The cover, text, and photographs are exceptionally beautiful; the cover image - of some sort of classical-goddess-looking person (possibly Democracy? I expect if I were more cultured I would know this) holding a cell phone - is spectacularly well done. I understand that Gurri self-published the first edition, and that this second edition is from not-quite-traditional publisher Stripe Press. I appreciate the kabbalistic implications of a book on the effects of democratization of information flow making it big after getting self-published, and I appreciate the irony of a book about the increasing instability of history getting left behind by events within a few years. So buy this beautiful book to put on your coffee table, but don't worry about the content - you are already living in it.

Hufflepuff and Gryffindor are just sooo similar

I know, I just mentioned Iâm Gryff primary a day or two ago. After I read your answer, I revisited the Sortinghatchats wordpress and their podcast. Then it dawned on me, am I actually Hufflepuff? I really am Hufflepuff.
This is not really an ask though, I do want to share something. Because I think Gryffindor and Hufflepuff primaries when they are passionate about something, they can come off very similar.
One of the main differences, I think, is how we approach people. On the surface, Iâm like Gryffindor primary. Iâm brash. Iâm not going to put up on anything wrong because itâs simply wrong. I cut through things to realize my goals no matter what. It does sound like goal-oriented Gryffindor, but no. Thatâs the first time I really understand what a âmodelâ is like. I modeled Gryffindor and I found that I took it after my aunt (ISTJ 1w2 Gryff).
She had been preaching about doing and standing by the right cause, the higher sense of âright and wrongâ but itâs not about rules or teachings but what you can feel inside of you as right. I took it, but it felt stiff⌠really. You see? When you are not something you will soon feel it. I tried to be Gryffindor and lived by those ideals but at the end of the day, itâs people that really matter. There are some examples I want to share.
Well, since primary system is mainly âmotivesâ rather than the ideal itself, this will not reflect every Gryff or Puff out there. The first one is, while I thought I was Gryffindor and had an ironclad value. I rarely ever put it on someone else. My value is not even that âcodedâ, tbh. Ages ago, I argued with my aunt about death penalty. Oh, dear, she roasted. She said that criminals on deathroll is right because those people were wrong and deserve that punishment. I argued âbut they can repent. They can come out and live as a member of society. We need every hand available and they can still be productive, if we give them a chanceâ. She scoffed said âthey are wrong and that is the fact, they might repent, they might be good but how can we know? and they canât just get off the hook like thatâ.
See? People versus ideal (We are both xSTJ and 1s, so no feeler-thinker dilemma here). My aunt (while she does care about people as a whole) doesnât argue on people but on what is right and wrong. I donât argue on right-and-wrong ground but more on society, people. Itâs the same end point (what is good for society) but through different lens (people vs ideal, both intuitive rather than decided house).
Other thing is the so-called âeven-handednessâ. This example is between me and my ESFP 6w7 friend (Gryff both primary and secondary). This time we actually believe in the same thing, share the same ideal and value. But where it comes from is really different. Me and my friend both share the same ideas that people shouldnât be marginalized. The ethnic groups and other communities shouldnât be oppressed as second-grade citizens or having their basic rights (home, land, culture and pride of their identity) nurtured. We are both âdisgustedâ by exploitation to indigenous people because of capitalism (look at first nations for instance). And we are both genuinely angry about how ethnic groups are not even allowed to be proud of their heritage (look at Uyghur) and racism in general. But it comes from different place and is shown out differently too. For my friend, it is ⌠well, right to hate those things and she is deeply disgusted and hated all those things enough that she once said something along the line of âI canât stand it, I want to ****ing vomitâ.
I donât have that kind of harshness. I wish I have, honestly, because I did model Gryffindor. I wish I can be as angry and heavy-handed as Gryffindors. I canât do it because for me, even if itâs wrong, even if Iâm disgusted by it to my core. They are still the same people. I will fight for ethnic groups, but I will never hate people who exploit or harm those people. Because they are human even if they are wrong. I once told my ESFP friend that she must not hate her family because they believe differently or forcing her to not believe what she believes. They just ⌠live with different mindset that us, but they are not wrong. âSo, donât hate them, will you? If you donât want to be with them, just leave, but donât hate themâ. She needs to learn taming her passion and sense of justice while I need to learn being angrier at the cause I believe in.
Last point is, I cannot stand leaving people in need by themselves. I cannot really find an example to contrast though but this is one hallmark of Hufflepuff. If there is a stranger in need and I can help them, I will. I tried not to (because it can look totally simpy or weird at times) but I cannot help but go out of my way to help them. Days ago, I went to university, a man approached me, asking if he could go and meet my professors because his girlfriend wants to talk about applying for master. No one was there, it was a holiday. I can just ignore him and finish my work. But I canât do it, so I tried finding the contact info of my professors and gave the couple that. I did have deep conflict with my aunt until recently but at that time I couldnât just leave her in pain and end up bringing her to hospital and 3 am. She needed me; I canât ignore it.
Oh, Iâm not saying Gryffindors are emotional hellions neither Hufflepuffs are angel, all of us can be evil, selfish or great depending on individual. I deeply respect their strong sense of justice and how they will go to any length for it, forsaking even their closest confidants if the situation calls for it. These are people who can change the world to be better and fairer. But Iâd say, donât try to be one, if you are not. Other houses are as good and equally awesome. We all can change the society for the better in our own way đ. Be proud of who you are.
* Iâm also Puff secondary. When ENFP mod helped point it out (and yes, I did know deep down Iâm Hufflepuff). I just realize how âcommunity buildingâ works. I broke up with my group awhile ago and suddenly found myself people who came to my aid and stayed by my side. Then my professor just helped me with my ethnic community goals. But thatâs for another time.
Btw, thanks ENFP mod! And can I ask if you accept novels? I just start writing one and Iâd love if I could polish (or publishâŚ) it. Iâve read in some posts you mention reviewing writings?
Mod: Glad you found your House. Hufflepuffs seem more generally forgiving and accepting than Gryffindors, and are less likely to go against other people. They are somewhat idealistic in wanting to give everyone a chance.
As to your question, no, I donât read / critique novels for free. Iâm a paid editor. But ProWritingAid.com is an amazing tool that will really help you polish your novel and improve it once youâve gotten it written. My advice is â write it, polish it, and then hire a good editor. Most people cannot âkill their darlingsâ without an enormous amount of practice and even then they can be blind to what is unnecessarily slowing down their plot.

hello. i want to write a story set in a very religious place. like fanatic level of religious. in my mind, this place is ruled by what the church says but has a "cover" figure to "connect" with the people. the people of this place are devoted to their religion, meaning they know passages, go to mass, and shun those who don't support it. here is my question: how does one go about creating a religion that feels real? what do i need to take into consideration (i'm not religious myself).

Brainstormed: You seem to have a very⌠narrow perception of religion? If you arenât religious yourself and youâre (presumably) from a Western culture, it makes sense that the Christian church and more specifically Catholicism are your go-to images of hyperreligion. Saying âmassâ and âchurchâ and âpassagesâ kind of gives away the fact that youâre trying to base your religion off of at least your idea of an Abrahamic religion, but Iâd ask you to reconsider. Right now it sounds like youâre trying to create a negative critique of these religions, and even if that is what youâre going for, you need to do a lot of research on their theology, history, and practices before you can do so with any competence.
Iâd suggest doing some basic research on types of religions, like animism, pantheism, polytheism, general superstition, etc. There are plenty of spiritual worldviews that you might consider way over the top, but whose believers find it more bizarre when people donât follow their teachings. Fanatics are never fanatics in their own mind, and especially among their own people, but also⌠fanatic might be a relative term. If youâre approaching this from a nonreligious background, then you might consider X-amount of religion in oneâs lifestyle to be fanatic-level. Whereas a person who actively practices religion would consider X-amount to be perfectly normal, and only folks who take it to XX-amount plus some shadier practices are the true fanatics.
Remember, religions start because people want to make sense of the world. There is a deeper feeling of wonder and personhood and power, both within a human being and in the whole world around us, that drives spirituality and generates superstition. Religion, at least to start, is beneficial to people, otherwise no one but sadists would follow its teachings. Now, like anything else, religion can devolve into a means of power hoarding and control of a populace, but only because of the people in charge getting greedy. The vast majority of religions Iâve studied have had radical, freeing, empowering teachings applicable to everybody when they first sprang up, and only later did adherents twist those teachings into societal oppression. If there is no satisfaction or benefit in your religion, there wonât exactly be any incentive for people to follow it so closely, aside from whatever negative consequences occur for those who fall away. And negative consequences arenât often enough to keep people in a religion. If following religion is more painful than the consequences of leaving it, plenty of people will jump ship.
Religion can also show up in every single part of life. According to Wikipedia:
A religious experience (sometimes known as a spiritual experience, sacred experience, or mystical experience) is a subjective experience which is interpreted within a religious framework. The concept originated in the 19th century, as a defense against the growing rationalism of Western society. William James popularised the concept.
You look up and see a cloud, a spiritual person sees a portent, or a spirit, or a castle where the gods live. You take a break from work for a minute, a spiritual person now has time to mutter a prayer, or observe the mood of the world, or dedicate their work to their god. A person doesnât have to be anywhere near a fanatic to have their religion be in every part of their life. Especially if they adhere to a more lax spirituality or superstitious worldview instead of an organized religion, the central spiritual experience of religious belief alters the perception of self and surroundings. It isnât only a set of rules to follow.
It can even help areas of society that modern Western society considers nonreligious! Historically, medicine has always come under religion. Witch doctors, medicine men, witchcraft, even the hygiene laws laid out in the Christian Bible. Physical health has often been considered a reflection of spiritual health, which, in a way, is true! The placebo effect means tending to oneâs mental and emotional health with the reassurance of religion will improve oneâs physical health as well. Not only that, but the power of a âspiritual experienceâ, regardless of if you believe the supernatural is real, can cause religious ecstacy, something you might perceive as a serious psychological problem but those who experience it consider to be a deep form of spiritual expression to be treasured and sought after. The spread and preservation of information is also often aided by religion, even though that can change should those in power want to change history or obscure truth for their own reasons. Just look at the history of the printing press and how that was driven by the need for Bibles. Many cultures, most famously Australian Aboriginal peoples, have oral histories thousands of years long that tie in closely to their spirituality.
You also might be confusing religion with cults. If you think all religion is predatory, playing on peopleâs weaknesses and fears in order to coerce them into a miserable lifestyle of following strict laws and living under control of those in power, you definitely have conflated âreligionâ and âcultâ. If youâd like to worldbuild a cult, go ahead! Itâs likely to be smaller and less acceptable than an established organized religion, not very transparent to the outside world nor its members, and have a spirituality that is in fact just a veneer over gaining power, instead of genuine belief and devotion, and may in fact require people to murder or commit suicide. Just look at Scientology, or these, or even Jared Leto, and a more in-depth look from this organization covering many different kinds of cults.
On a more worldbuildy note, are those who practice this religion correct? Does their god(s) exist? Is the supernatural real? If yes, then are they really fanatics if theyâve been right all along? Even if theyâre incorrect, the dedication and deep-held beliefs of religious people shouldnât be mocked wholesale, in my opinion. Make sure to keep some genuine three-dimensional development for characters who are part of this religion, or include other religions with different practices, or the only thing youâll accomplish is âwaaaa religion bad believers dumbâ. And if that is the story you want to write, feel free, but I canât help you there.
Feral: What makes a religion feel real? Sincere faith.
Specifically among the leaders. I mean, sure, those lemming-like peasants who actually believe that superstitious nonsense will have sincere faith, but honestly? There is going to be a higher percentage of people faking it among the masses than among the clergy. Clergy members are generally required to go through rigorous studies and often take vows that can cause great discomfort. I am sure there are those who did it for the power - there are in atheist organizations as well, humans can be crap - but if you actually read the writings of important Church leaders of the past, not to mention rabbis, imams & mullahs, and archakas, youâre going to find that they have sincere faith.
Something you should always keep in mind when developing pre-modern religion in a Western context is that before the advent of modern scholarship, which starts to become a thing in the West during the Renaissance, all the important scholars were clergy. And again, those learned people either had to be really, really dedicated to their power-hungry ambitions or had to have sincere faith.
That does not make religions perfect by any means nor does it mean that the god they have sincere faith in is omnibenevolent (though the qualities of an omnibenevolent god will be strongly dependent on the culture that worships it). And religious leaders are absolutely capable of doing terrible, terrible things even if they profess to worship an omnibenevolent god, and politicians can definitely twist things around to suit their needs (again, this is not exclusive to religiosity). But your ask has this weird given that a major religion (on par with Catholicism/Christianity) in your world is a scam, and while yes, that happens in cults and alternative religions and in splinter groups*, as Brainstormed pointed out thatâs just not how, at least, the four major religions of our world got started.
Yes, itâs true that bureaucracies of a certain size and age will inevitably begin to change focus to protecting its own existence. And yes, itâs true that ambitious sociopaths will be drawn to places of authority even if they are difficult to achieve. And yes, itâs true that an individual entering a toxic environment is more likely to be changed by the environment than to change the environment. But guess what! That has nothing to do with whether the organization is religious or not.
Why does a religion exist in the first place? It explains the universe in a pre-modern world; it provides organization and structure for community focus - in other words, many social programs have historically been run through religious organizations and leadership. And it provides hope and comfort in a very scary world.
Some clergy might be able to fake all of that for a little while, but a large bureaucracy with many clerics who are all in on the fake? No. Allow me to rephrase: hell no. People are not dumb. Maybe you believe that of all religious people, but you are wrong and they are not. The people in your world, if theyâre anything like the people in our world, are gonna sniff out the bullshit if none of their religious leaders believe what theyâre selling. There is a reason Scientology has to keep blackmail files on all its adherents, and I promise you, the Catholic Church does not do that.
*A note on cults, alternative religions, and splinter groups: Cults and alternative religions (their PR friendly name) are âreligionsâ that are scammy and/or actively dangerous to the participants or others: Peopleâs Temple, Branch Davidian, etc. Splinter groups are congregations that start as normal members of a large religion or denomination but its insular culture creates a divide that just takes things a little too far even for the most fanatical of the main sect (think terrorist groups that link themselves to religions). These types of religions might be what you are actually asking about. Groups like these can be highly, highly influential but in a very contained area. What cults often do is the leader settles in an area and buys property and builds a church and maybe a school and then encourages the members to all move either onto the plot of land if itâs large enough or to buy up surrounding land and homes and push out all the non-believers. That area can then be fortified or just have a de facto boundary with the rest of the world. Sometimes a group like this can become large enough to constitute an entire town, but rarely a city - groups that large will more often have centralized compounds but with the members living scattered among non-believers, as Scientology does. Obviously a group concentrated like that will have an impact on local politics, if they are allowed to participate, but itâs not going to go farther than the county line, so to speak. As we all know from the news, splinter groups like ISIS can become very large and globe spanning, but those types of groups have within them splinter groups and factions, and I donât think thatâs what youâre asking about anyway, so Iâm just going to leave it there.
But frankly, your ask reads to me as âhow do I create a fantasy!Catholic that is secretly evil and will show the audience how evil religion is in the real world? Opiate of the masses!â And my advice is⌠donât. Because it lacks compassionate understanding of people of faith (many faiths), it lacks a factual understanding of how world religions differ and function, it totally lacks nuance, and finally, because it is absolutely, monumentally, extremely, really, very cliche.
Maybe the way your ask is coming across to me is totally not how you intended it. Maybe you only used the jargon you used because you assumed we wouldnât know any other terms and maybe your understanding of world religions is actually quite sophisticated. Maybe you really do have this insanely clever way to spin a tired cliche into some new and original. In these cases, we strongly encourage you to come right back with as jargon-full and specific an ask as you can write, use our submission google form to do it. Otherwise, give our responses some thought and if after youâve developed your religion, you want to come back with a specific ask other than âhow do I world build a religion?â (which is a little too broad), please feel free.

being a straight black trans guy is really weird. thereâs so many intersections of experience, and not in the dumb âtechnically i can reclaim this axis of oppressionâ level of terminally logged in lgbt person i mean it in a âgoing about my lifeâ way.
for starters, idt i ever âhatedâ being a woman, i donât really relate to that trans narrative, i just realized it was an identity that became increasingly frustrating to align with and moved on to a label that finally fit me. being a black girl was cool, despite all the social toll that came with it, black girls have contributed so much to popular culture and even to our own communities, so there was no real reason for me to dislike it other than âit just doesnât feel like me anymoreâ and i like it that way. i have a very comfortable relationship with both black girlhood and black manhood, if anyone asks iâd probably fall under that âi remember being convinced i was a little boy. not knowing why my parents didnât see it too and insisted on treating me like a little girl.â narrative that seems to be the narrative a lot of "trans stories that wonât make cis people uncomfortably avert their gazeâ media. i had (and still do have) genuine interests in a lot of traditionally masculine aesthetics, music, career paths, and hobbies, but i donât recall ever feeling disgusted, embarrassed, or insecure parts of my life where i was identifying as / being coerced into woman aligned individuality, and the strained relationship i had with my mother because of these things, like a lot of trans guys (understandably) seem to be with theirs. this proves for disconnect occasionally, between who i want to be and who i actually am, but the more time goes by the less i give a shit about who thinks what. i donât take shit from anyone as a guy because i didnât do it as a chick, which leads for a lot of leeway in being comfortable with who i was and who i currently am.
i still have a lot of pleasant associations with being a gay woman, i probably wouldnât be where i am today without a lot of the gnc lesbians and trans bi women, i still feel a sense of community with that identity (never to the point of being invasive, i hope.) iâm never not going to get sentimental about a woman being happy with another woman, comfortable in their own skin; thatâs just how my brain is default-wired at this point. iâm not offended by women (cishet or otherwise) not wanting me in their spaces (itâs honestly more validating than being seen as a defanged token feminist boy who will bring no harm or whatever, i much prefer people hearing about me or holding a conversation with me and deciding what direction they want to take with me based on those things, like you would any other human being) but itâs still cool to know that i can have these feelingsâ still be deeply involved and still have feelings for this culture iâve ingrained in myself from a young ageâ and not feel like an intruder or outsider, despite being a straight dude, iâm always going to have a pretty firm grasp of gay culture and wonât get freaked out by people putting the sex back in homosexual like a lot of cishets and even a lot of gnc tenderkweers tend to get every 3 months. itâs honestly been the side of gay culture that iâve always preferred lol.
i call a lot of bullshit on this âtoxic masculinity intricate ritualsâ stuff thatâs come into public conscious in the last couple of years or so as well, not only was it mostly popularized by MRAs (around the same time as public concious on ellior rodger and incel/chad terminology as wellâŚshoulda been a red flag from the beginning imo) not just because it frames men as the ones who suffer the most due to their own actions rather than the women and children they torture on a daily basis, but itâs also been used to racially pathologize the boundaries and mannerisms i have that my (racist) white partners have been uncomfortable with in the past. your weird entitled impulse to police my body and the way i present myself in a way i genuinely enjoy and am comfortable is not remotely subtle, and the mental gymnastics behind your desires to impress your frat buddies does not excuse you brutalizing women on a daily basis and shaming children to the point they have serious issues coping with a lot of hardships that face them later in life.
the most visible majority of the trans masc community is white dudes and they all fucking suck. theyâre terrible to women, trans nonbinary and cis, are either extremely liberal in their political stances or simply never talk about anything relating to it at all (and they all have garbage taste in fashion and music, i know thatâs kinda petty but i think iâm allowed to be rude to people who try to make wanting to transition into a humanstuck karkat gijinka a universal experience and hozier and constantly self infantalize and weaponize their own softness while expecting everyone else on the planet to wait on them hand and foot.) iâve met maybe 3 good white trans guys in my life and one of them iâve been friends with since high school, it really put me off transitioning all together because i was raised mostly by women and a lot of my idols have been women since i was a kid (and even if this werenât the case, colonialist concepts of respect / equality / gender in general are very different from nonwhite cultures, so even if i wasnât constantly in immediate proximity of women or didnât have any âsignificantâ woman figures in my life it would stil feel very weird and removed.)
none of this, of course, is to imply that black men arenât horrendously misogynistic (especially towards black women. lbr, mostly towards black women, lol. this is another one of those weird intersections, knowing that misogyny is not exclusively a product of white supremacy but that colonialism has definitely catalyzed it.) or that black men wonât use their race to get out of being rightfully accused of misogyny similar to the ways a lot of white gay people use their sexualities as a get out of jail free card, but i really donât understand white trans guys like this. i think they realize theyâre oppressed and cling to it as a personality trait, and when anyone calls them on it they get really offended cus they have nothing else to fall back on, hence all the gatekeeping and regurgitated TERF rhetoric (which any and all TME people have been guilty of, at some point, and a lot of whom unfortunately are still doing as i write up this post) and truscum antics. this nonsense got so bad that it put me off transitioning for like 5 years.
iâm here now, though, and iâm content with it, so i try not to hold too many grudges about it even if it is a bit frustrating and put me behind a lot of my peers. iâm mosly just focusing on how many doors open to you when youâre finally comfortable in your own skin lol.
